"A look at days like today and you think no reds game. They played an afternoon game yesterday. We already covered that for for a large chunk of the show yesterday. Probably not going to be a lot to talk about today. probably going to be a slow day. We're gonna we're gonna manufacturer. We have to grind and to earn our money today. Oh con rare mover. The biggest news hit yesterday as as the show was winding down. And i didn't really have time to get my head around what was happening. You see some tweets. But you're in the middle of the show you get like you know two and a half three minute commercial. Break kind of digest. Something then more information starts coming out. Things start piling up and oh this is a big deal texas and oklahoma potentially leaving the big twelve for the sec and like with most expansion rumors when it when it started yesterday. Everybody kinda met with. Yeah okay yeah sure another expansion rumor and then as the day went on to the night went on. No no this is. This is very real and a lot of shockwaves rumbling. Across college sports tell you this now. A lot of people expected this news to come. We'll get into who expected it and and who was behind putting the news out yesterday. That's fascinating because the league didn't come from texas oklahoma or the sec. Who came from quite fascinating. And of course what does it mean for the bearcats. The jockeying for repositioning as it begins is already underway. And you know the the musical chairs seemingly have started a gain. Can the bearcats find a seat when the musical chairs stop. Where will that be well. It'd be a good seat. They'll have a see just kinda seat that they're in the seat that i had at brunch on sunday not great. My back is still messed up from that seat. Taryn was worried about me today. I was hobbling around. So i asked on twitter last night. What should be topic. A and i know a lot of my following is college based because of bearcat journal. Everybody wanted me to talk. Talk the domino's conference realignment topic a today so we will get to that in our next segment the topic gay segment segment where we set up the show right. The topic as segment is the first segment after this. So we'll talk about what it means. We'll we'll talk about what it means for. Uc probably spend a good deal of time on it in this hour. So that's that's one thing that happened. Then i stop and grab some dinner last night and fortunately didn't get caught in the presidential traffic which was nice. Got got settled in to usually. When i get home. I sit down at my desk in my office. Either some games or or start. Getting things organized forgot radio the next day. Get things ready on the website. A podcast things of that nature. And then chris rose interview with nick. Castanos comes out the castanos re reveals. He's gotta microfracture and his wrist can't swing a bat as that story develops likely out for a couple of weeks. A couple of weeks into august with nick castellanos by the way contained bell. Just stop saying everybody's okay. After something happens thank. He's going to be fine nothing to see here. Hope to him back in a couple of days and we don't see the guy for a stink in month. Just shut up to say. I don't know also. Why did it take five days to have his wrist. Scanned should not have been scanned. Blasted like like friday night saturday morning so that they didn't play him on monday to potentially do more damage. What are we doing but boy big ramifications with nick. Castanos the anchor your three hitter. You're all star your mvp candidate now out for a couple of weeks and the trade deadline is eight days away day off today on top of that. The next seven games against the cardinals here. Friday saturday sunday and then four in chicago against the cubs. I know there's like we talked a ton about the reds and their relation to the brewers six and a half back by the way you realize the cardinals are one game behind the reds. The cubs are two games behind the reds. If this team doesn't pick it up and do so. Without nick castanos you could be in fourth place by this time next week fourth place. You know what you ain't doing in fourth place you ain't buying and if you are a whole lot of lipstick on a pig ain't it trying to put a band aid on severed carotid artery without castanos. Don't you have to think about becoming sellers and it stinks. 'cause you're gonna you're going to have to put casts the honors on the injured list. There's not going to be anybody. That's going to trade for nick us with a broken wrist not teams that are looking for sure fire. Help down the stretch right. You don't know when you're going to get him back. The reds wouldn't get anything near the quality of return if they traded nicasio on us now but wait vilely lewis castio. There's names in there tucker barnhart some names in there you could move and get some decent return on investment. You have to at least start looking at it. I don't know the buyings going to do any good. We'd all love for them to buy right. We love for it. But if you're not gonna logistically like realistically make a run and put yourself in contention. Put yourself in position to win the division. Just you're just selling assets that you would think are going to be relied upon to help you down the road. Why would you. Why would you get rid of guys in the long term picture for guys. In short term picture that's bleak.

I want you to hang around because i got football questions. And there's a big day for uc sports. But jesse you like how got him to work a twenty four seven in there as well done very very well done very well done. It can play. Yeah okay you think. I'd have them commit on air if he couldn't play putting my name on this. You know it's a simple question right. Can that can i can do play. Yeah gimme gimme. That's weird because he's right. There can scouting report. What are we like long athletic Most importantly i think from i. I haven't had a chance to see him in person but from the tape. I've watched i think the most important aspect of his game and he doesn't know this ship probably as his ability to move his feet on the perimeter. Okay ball screens are insanely prevalent in today's game. And we have. This is probably why. I think this is so important We have spent two years watching ball screen. Defense be who struggle mel struggle problem. You get a guy with size and length that can move his feet and can had and switch and and ice and do all the different ball screen coverages. i think that's big but high highly skilled..

"I think i've ever seen in my life on tuesday. Okay briggs who was playing He has been subbing in for my jay sanders sanders is your rush and the the guy to get after the quarterback right sanders about two hundred and fifty two hundred and fifty five pounds six foot. Four two fifty five around there john briggs at six three three hundred and twenty five pounds he was lined up against cam jones who is a converted tight end jones at six eight three hundred ten pounds. That's say large human right doin breaks took his right arm and spiked him through the turf and i thought we were going to have to bury. The ball snapped briggs. Took his right arm and just like a circular motion just like the poor kid and i it was. There was another the during the play. eric phillips got through the middle and forced to fumble. And i'm standing with justin williams and i gasped. Good play by phillips. I said you didn't see what's next to it. Because i think they needed to. Defer to get jones off they they right now man to say the defense ahead of the offense is Is putting it mildly. At the moment. I guess on one level. That's good on another. Maybe not so much. I enjoyed tomorrow man. Thanks so much. Thank you chad will host this show tomorrow. His website is bearcat journal dot com and his twitter. Feed is at chad brendel..

"Those moments. That never escapes you i. Let's get demarcus freeman today named defense coordinator of the year by twenty four seven sports the head of cincinnati's top ten ranked unit thirty four years. Old came with. Luke fickle when fickle took. The job freeman had been. Let go at purdue when the coaching staff was. Let go under darrell hazell. Which i think is important here. We'll get we'll get we'll circle back to that in a little bit right freemen's. He's built an incredible unit cincinnati. He's kind of become a one of one and his name is being mentioned a lot. I i reported as well as pete thamel that he interviewed and was a finalist for the head. Coaching job illinois. Think about that thirty four years old right thirty four years old a defensive coordinator at a group of five program interviewing braehead head coaching job in the big ten. That's unprecedented that stuff. We haven't seen. He's also been linked to defensive coordinator openings at notre dame and lsu. I have reported on bearcat journal. That he has they have reached out to his representation. Freeman has not spoken to anyone at lsu or notre dame yet he is going to get through the ball game and see where things go from there. My opinion here is that if that's defensive coordinator at lsu notre dame or cincinnati. As of right now my opinion is he returns to cincinnati. But there's some interesting stuff for marcus freeman when i asked him about his name being considered for those jobs this morning. Let's hear that now to sit here and say that you don't enjoy those opportunities manet's ally you know everybody enjoys some reward or or some accolade or some opportunity But you know. I know the reason why we've been successful in in. You know i liked to you know. Sometimes you want to stand in front and say yes because me with at. I know it's because of guys. Like derek force guys like our seniors that have worked or tails off and coach fickle. Who's been an unbelievable leader for me for many many years in in the thing i've learned about coach fickle is. Is you know loyalty and working where you're but is you know work where you're but don't worry about other things that you don't control you know the best thing i can do in the only thing i can do is work as hard as i can right here on my buddy university of cincinnati those opportunities come you know and at some point of always said i wanna be a head coach you know in every decision makers is is understanding. A as long as it doesn't hurt me As a chance to get the optimum at coached and you know good you know. So jad it's awesome. It's it's great it's humbling sometimes But i understand why. I'm in this position and i understand that without these players without the leadership coach vic i wouldn't be in this position and so you know you gotta stay focused on the task at hand and you know as coach vic always say work where your buddies. I appreciate him mentioning me by name. There was very nice of them in the context of this radio. Show that work great. But it's important what he said towards the end. He wants to be a head coach. can he get there from here. Now he lost out on the illinois job. Divert bielema burr bielema. Who's had multiple double digit win seasons in the big ten on his resume does it change. Does markets is opportunity does. Marcus is odds of getting that job. Change if he's been a coach in the mac for three years. I don't necessarily think it does now. I do think it is difficult for an athletic director to sell a head coach at a p five level. That has not been a head coach. So would there be some value leaving here. Take a lower level. Coaching job in say in the mac in conference usa. In the american and building your resume for three four years in the hopes that that advance is your opportunity to get a really nice power five head coaching job. Before your forty thirty thirty eight thirty nine somewhere in their thirty seven but as we've seen with illinois interviewing him those doors are already starting to open. He is already seen as one of the bright minds. The bright young minds in college football think about how many people he had to beat out to be named defensive coordinator of the year especially how many p five defensive coordinator he had to beat out to be named of the year. he's young. he's charismatic. Just listen to that interview with him. He knows what he wants. He has a vision. Look at what. He's done defensively at cincinnati with all the different times where they've faced an opponent that maybe presented a different challenge and he broke out something new. He had a new defense for for navy. Four four never played it before boom shut navy down. Three three five have came here last year shot. Ucf down the bear front that they played against army this year because army was expecting them to play the four four that they saw from navy. Two years ago. Didn't play the four four played a five-man front shutdown army. This is a guy that's not afraid of having a bit of a different identity right. What do you see in college sports. What did you see in the nfl. I'm a four four three guy. I'm a three four guy. This is my defense. The only that really doesn't do that. New england house. The last twenty years gone for bill ballot. Check where he says. I don't care what my basis my defense is about stopping. You and i will play whatever formation. I need to play do that right. We do we do that on offense. You don't see anybody off the an offense it's like yes my my. My offense is trips left single back in the in the pistol and one wide receiver to the right. That's my base office now. People don't do that. They might have a base personnel. But even that is flexible. Freemen's not scared. And i think that's starting to show around the country or other programs are looking to marcus freeman and going. You know what..

Early signing day: Latest on the nation's top 25 college football recruits

"It's signing day part one in college football with the early signing period. now which. I'm sure coaches love because they championship games and bowl games. All that other stuff. It is obviously been a very busy time for the uc coaching staff. And a big reason why is putting together a twenty three players signing class or recruiting class. I should say for the the class of two thousand and twenty one during the early signing period we are obviously huge fans of bear journal. Dot com chad. Brendel comes on this show all the time. He'll be with us tomorrow at three forty five but because it is sunday i wanted to bring in brent young who also covers. Uc's sports and pretty heavy recruiting emphasis for bearcat journal dot com. He is on twitter at. Excuse me at be young sports and He's with us this afternoon. I appreciate the time. What should i what what stands out most about this. This particular group of players the bearcats have inked You know what really stands out to me. The most i often travel on. It's just kind of the debt that that numerous positions the the high level of talent. It might not have the the top players like you know. You have last year with with prater and jean thomas and jane thompson. The four stars really really kind of flooding the top of the list. But what was really shown and this one is just the death and the amount of talent that they're able to bring in not really clear that you would expect kind of just be headliners for each class but just the amount of players that are highly rated at each physician. You're going to have numerous players. They're going to have big impact next year special teams but more further down the line right. Give me one or two players. That if i look at this bunch and i'm trying to find a kid who's gonna make an immediate impact year one or two stands out. You don't have to go with i. Brian threats i think first off. He's one of the seven early enroll. East coming in is going to be a player out of you. Know w kaufmann there and the clubs. They're gonna come in and be a player that wants to get on the field no matter what so. You're going to see him on special teams quite a lot. You're going to see him trying really find his role on the defensive side. You know obviously defense is going to have a humorous players that are going to have to be funneled out and figured out who's going to be replacing all the seniors that are currently on the roster. So yeah i think threats comes in. He has a knack for the ball defensively. He has the ability to make big plays. You know you play offense as well as the high school level but really defensively special teams where. I'm expecting him to kind of have almost an immediate impact and then outside of that You know give me. Give me an office alive because it seems. Recently we have causes there possibly had numerous true freshman. Kind break that that that you know. Talk to on the depth chart. And i think that you look at a player like luke collins where who could step in at the tackle position is one of the better fruits that program history for the bearcats. And i think he's gonna have a chance to really kinda shy know now. Land is gonna have a chance to really shine but and then of course you look at the depth as i've constantly mentioned it's going to be hard for some of these players really crack the rotation because now you see we've been able to turn you know one as one bs and constant we have players available at each position. So really specialties. Would be the place to watch out for. Maybe i'd a toxic to watch out for who could have an impact on kickoff teams kickoff return team things of that sort. There are seven kids from the greater cincinnati area around up the kids from from From from from this class from the greater cincinnati area. yeah. I talked about Gmc defensive player of the year. It of seems like that's been that the bearcats have been able to do is bring in big time defensive players from the great cincinnati area and that first off. He has a fantastic a phenomenal nickname. And it's the godfather dante. I mean better. Carry that with him and he'd better have it all the way throughout his playing career. Whether it is in the nfl anywhere he goes. Dante corleones the godfather of course from rain high school. He's going to be a cog in the middle. You shake his hand and he just completely engulfs your hand. It makes you feel small just a bowling ball of a player. And he kinda of exact situation as i say of the death i mean. He's he's the second lowest rated player in this entire recruiting class. But you've accused. Gmc defensive player of the year. you get sacks. he's going to be a big shopper. Upfront i mean forced. You gotta mentioned the land fickle. That really great story about him is is of course he. He sat down at the dinner table with his father. And he said you know data. I think i'm gonna be a bearcat and and we've said no. I don't accept that i need a little bit more. You know force behind that. And that's you know he said okay came back days later and i'm sure he fought as much force as possible and You know land is going to be a player. That i think is surprised. Because he's got the talent that his dad has of leeward hours another great flare out of princeton. I mean you just keep on going up and down the list and then of course you know you got ice. Jarman is a good outside player. And i already talked about mouth glenn. This is just going to be another one of those. The state of cincinnati is what they call it and and keeping hometown heroes around the greater cincinnati area. They're all gonna big impact on the team. All right look. I'm not gonna ask you to be an expert on every recruiting class in the country but there are folks at twenty. Four seven are relentless. Put this class up against other competitors in the put this class up against their competitors among a group of five schools. And then tell me where would stack up or how would stack up to even some of the schools that we frequently talk about them. Trying to recruit among power five schools. Right you know first off forty second in the country. You might know that at that and think okay. That seems like a high number but you break it down. This is pop. G five recruiting class top class in the afc. You know an average of eighty five point one that is second behind what last year. The eighty five point three Just just the amount of average ratings throughout the entire class you know the groups that break higher than what auburn has brought in this year. What virginia tech has brought in what you know an iowa state who is magically better than the bearcats in the college football playoff hole which. I'm sure you've completely broke down but higher than in iowa state hires than a ucla arizona state tcu. So you know there was about twenty power five twenty to twenty five power. Five software says up bearcats actually had a higher national rank. Nance so you're looking at you. Know one of the best britain the best group of five but one of the better entire classes and the and the nation he look at next year. Obviously a really early start but this is a fantastic roof. And they're going to be you know like i said it's going to be a couple years down the line. You're gonna start calling out these players by name and say wow. This is a big time player from that twenty. Twenty one

"And that. That's a better win than anything. Cincinnati has there's a million ways that they they're experts at this there's a million ways that they can justify it and i just don't i want to thank you right. I want to think ohio state is going to have to play in the big ten title game. I also barry. Alvarez was very open today. Yeah yeah we need ohio state to play in the big ten championship game. And if their undefeated at the end of the regular season we're just we should put them in in in a year where i test matters more than anything. If you actually watch the games like i'd you. Does you say you see as a real team. I know they're in the group of five. But they have a real team and that should be recognized not just comparing stats in their efficiency of blah blah blah blah blah. Do the people on the committee. Watch the games and watching teams. Because if you did you'd say this team does really deserves to be in the conversation. I agree and i think you know what they would say. Rocky they would say. We put them in the conversation. We put them higher than we've ever put a group of five team before because they pass the eye test and and they wouldn't happen. They don't feel that they have to justify from there. Like i i get your. I agree with your points. I've just we know how this like. I've read this book before. And like i know how it ends. I've seen how it ends. Unfortunately unless there's a bunch of stuff that happens and the thing is you're right because this is by far the most complete group of five team that has tried to crash the party since two thousand thirteen when the started their great on defense. Their top in smp plus. They're number two in the country on defense. You know where they are on offense. I don't know. I just know they have real player when i watch my eyeball. Say well these guys are good at football her sixteen on offense. There's only two programs in the country that are top twenty in offense defense and special teams and that's cincinnati and clemson. So they pass the eye test. They absolutely do. I hope that they get more than a fair shot. And they get a chance to do this. I maybe. it's living in cincinnati for my whole life most of my whole life. Maybe it is you know. Ptsd from being fans of teams in the city and seeing the ball pulled out you know time and time again preparing myself for the worst but if you watch this team and i think a huge difference here i do think. There is immense respect for luke fickle around college football. I think that is a big plus in that room that they do not gloss over. Luke fickle is gimmicky. They know he's a real football coach and he's he's not doing it with smoke and mirrors so i think that gives them a chance i just. I just don't know if it comes down to it if they were if they were forced to pick between state. Cincinnati for that fourth spot. I think we know how it would turn out. I don't. I don't agree with it. But i think we know chad. Brendel bearcat journal checking in last question. You gotta just got done eating some delicious chicken wings. So i'm doing great. I wanna ask you what you talked about your podcast justin williams wrote about it for the athletic. We all knew defense was going to be really good coming into the season. That was the expectation. Is it fair to say at this point. That defense has even been better than anybody thought it could be. I mean it's off the charts. Good yeah i mean i think the big thing is you know we wondered about the linebackers coming into the season and They've been awesome. So you've got a dominant defensive line. A secondary doesn't give anybody an inch of space and linebackers flying. All over the field making tackles and when that's the case it just it puts the stranglehold on offense. And i mean to do what they did. Smu in memphis who really high powered you know. Offensive that are have been impossible to stop in. Cincinnati made them look pedestrian and made to veteran quarterbacks. Do of the best quarterbacks in college football look like they were seeing ghosts. I mean it was unbelievable. Watching that memphis game from field level brady white at times just threw the ball ten yards downfield into the dirt because he had absolutely nowhere to go he was the flood and it was..

Whatever the heck one they play I think that game right before Memphis on the road right before SMU SMU, Memphis Combo on the road first road game of the year. I think that one could be a little bit of a concern as well. I think there well, as Memphis is able to feel the football team I think they're going to be you know ready for Memphis. Forty two positive tests on their in their team who there's there's forty six positives in the Memphis. Athletic Department. Forty two of them are on the football team. They got a party bus after win over Arkansas state. Not Advise. Players. Right after. They. Beat Arkansas state come on. Roy he is Chad Bruno from bearcat journal checking in for our weekly hit on the UC bearcats Chad for the for the casual bearcat fan or the fringe observer of College football explained to them if you could. Just. How good you see secondary and the talent in that secondary. Well So there was a guy coming into last year that everybody thought was the most talented player on the team. Was the best player on the team the most likely everybody had him penciled as playing last season and entering the NFL draft? And being a probably a second day selection in the NFL draft. He blew out his knee he he comes back this year and he was third in our ranking of using secondary wow. What you had, you had a kid go from a my gardner last year sauce, the casual sauce, the those the sock like how he became soft that story. So he he comes here nickname he has he has been nicknamed sauce since he was a little kid. He gets here and they say, you know what would we like? What would you like us to call you and he tells Luke Sick Oh, I'd like to be called sauce. Can Look tickle is like We're going to call you a motte yeah. You want sauce like you earn it just come in with the nickname sauce. So he gets to pick six against central. Florida it looks I. Got Call Him Sauce and then he gets the pick six against. See you to help them make that come back, win and listen I'll call him whatever he wants. My daughter is in some places a first team, all American candidate. He was fifth on the depth chart and camp last year it's unlike any. Rise at UC that we've ever seen you know because it wasn't like he was he he came into a position that that had weakness..

"Sportstalk till nine the inside pitch a ninety nine forty in a bit. We'll get into Tiger Woods a little bit later on beyond that as we get closer to the inside bitch will add in some reds conversation and take your calls on that do want to save some room on the other side of our our next conversation for your reaction to the hiring of John Brennan. And what you make what do you think it means for UC basketball that coming up about seven twenty or so, but let's go front and center on this topic with a man who was all over it. As always is for all things related to UC basketball football UCF Lennox from bearcat journal that would be Chad Brenda. How are you? About the right? A seven thousand dollar check for cactus. So I'm not great. Wow. The joys of being an independent contractor land. You know, you get over it. Walk me through the the last forty eight seventy two hours or so. And I was I was struck by something Mike bone alluded to earlier today, and you can kind of paint the picture of this. Explain Luke physicals role in the hiring of John Brannon. Well, this is something that they did with with Scott gugans as well when they've kind of dialed in on their guy, and it's been convenient because obviously gugans was the head coach Xavier. So he was local and then John Brennan being the head coach didn't get you. He was local. But when they load up the truck to go through the interview fickle Hotson the truck and he rolls with them. And I think it's a it's a pretty interesting strategy because you're giving your new coach perspective from guy that is you know, is currently coach of a very important program and your and your athletic department. So they can bounce ideas off each other and talk. I know anyone gugans house they had both been recruiting Ohio. For so long that I heard they literally just stopped there and talked about like areas of Ohio for like two hours. I don't even know how much interview. But I think it's a it's a really nice resource to have for the guy that you want to be your new coach to get that perspective of their bought in enough that, you know, they're bringing Luke here to talk to me. Chad Michael, Mike, bone UC's, director of athletics also alluded to and I think he used the term in terms of the search we scrub the entire nation in it sounds like it was it was simply a case of they found a guy. They liked in whoever. They matched against him lost in that match and John Brennan was the guy. Yeah. It is kind of an interesting dynamic on how that played out. I've got a lot of connections around the country, obviously. And I kept getting calls like this guy is a person of interest. And Jack in the answer would be no. And what it was was this guy wasn't person of interest. And then they compare them to John Brennan. And then he was no longer a person of interest. And they went on to the next guy. There was a couple of times. I had the the biggest one I think was Greg Smith of Utah valley state. He was telling people that UC was interested in them, and I checked on it, and he was not remaining on the list of candidates anymore. Even though it had got now through ESPN and a couple of national places that he was a person of interest, but he didn't stack up well enough against John Brennan to continue in the hunt. So it was very thorough. People bought Wednesday and Thursday things were moving really flawlessly, but they were just locked in the conference room doing this. But we're just talking about. Going through the list of all the people that they could be interested in and apparently comparing them to John Brennan, and John he went undefeated in death matches. Chad brindell bearcat journal check it in talk and John Brennan, the hiring process more before I ask you about recruiting and finding players. Let me ask you about keeping players. What is your sense right now for that group that is currently Bearcats, and and how many remain Bearcats I think this group is really tight though. And this is a tidbit that that's pretty important to the discussion. I think we would all agree kind of the vocal and emotional leader of this group is Trey Scott, right? Yep. Brandin recruited Trayvon Scott when he was the associate head coach at Alabama and the two of them have an existing relationship and a really good existing relationship to my understanding. So when he came in he was able to quickly identify with Trayvon and and kinda use Trayvon to help him ease. The concerns of the team, you know, get them on board and working in that direction very quickly. There's always something that pops up when there's a new coach whether it be player not feeling like they fit in or coach going through all the tape and saying, hey, that, you know, this is my style. I don't know that you fit they'll be something or other pops up here and there, but really I look for the majority to return, I think it was a great sign that you had a large number of those guys at the press conference today, including Dave on Scott, Keith Williams, Darren Cumberland, Trevor more important to see. I think. You've probably been asked this once or twice over the last week, or so any sense any reading the tea leaves on what it might mean for incoming recruits. Some are occurred us why no what I've heard coach Brandon called him last night. I know Mike bone visited him on Wednesday, which is pretty impressive because in order to take recruiting in order to conduct a recruiting. Visit you have to take a test before you can go out on the road. I heard Mike bone as the test one hundred. Any any went out on the road? And that was Tamari Curtis on Wednesday heard good brand and talked to him last night after he got the job. I think there's a pretty good chance that somebody Curtis sticks with his commitment to Cincinnati. Big time score big scores like coaches the coach offense, right? Yeah. How I think there's a pretty good chance. They'll be able to keep some art Curtis. Nicole? Let me let me ask you about recruiting a lot of what you do is so laser focused on this, and you can lend perspective to this the the recruiting footprint of John Brennan, if I'm looking at a map, maybe compared to the footprint of mic over the last thirteen years, how might it match up or be different? Well, I think the one thing that's pretty impressive with John his been a really good regional recruiter at different stops. Which is pretty rare at VCU, and we'll leave out eastern Kentucky and Saint Bonaventure not because we don't like them. But just for the sake of exercise. VCU? He did a really good job recruiting in that that southeast region their final four team. Everybody credits that shock of smart is another big one. I'm gonna lay on four of the five starters on that final fourteen. Their lead recruiter was branded big big. And then when he got the Alabama, obviously, you're you you gotta shift to the south, and he was able to shift to the south. They landed top twenty five classes all but I think one year that the six years he was at Alabama and they had one class. It was top ten nationally. So he has done an excellent job recruiting at two different stops. And then, you know, everybody wants to say within K you while they're not, you know, that the level below UC. And they're correct. But what I would say is after that first year, which was a transition year they were still in. They hadn't fully made the transition to division one. They weren't eligible for the NC double A tournament. They were in the Atlantic sun. Tired of John getting there? And then they move up to the horizon, which pretty substantial jump in level of leagues by John second year, midway through his second year. He had maybe the second or third best roster and then that league and then the last two years he's had the best roster in that league. And next year. They probably are going to have the best roster and that lead. So that speaks to what he was able to do as a talented valuator to come in back quickly and make that turn and get that roster where it needed to be to compete at the top of that league consistently for three years in a row. I go back to MC. When he was at Murray state. We got there. He hit a really better team. They were really good. They made the NCAA tournament. Second year. They had a pretty pretty big drop off because he lost a lot. And then he replenished it and got back the third year, which is down in the job. John didn't have that kind of job. He just kept it rolling and making his teams better. And I think that's something that's gonna continue here. You have you have spent a lifetime watching bearcat basketball. How is you look into the future? How might bearcat basketball look differently under John Brennan? I had a member on my site say this, Lance, and I it clicked and the kind of made sense, the more and more you think about it. You know, who who is style reminds me of? Rick pitino. Oh, you ought to pressure ninety four via up and down the floor. What was Rick Pitino famous for? When he got the Kentucky. He was kind of the innovator of the three point, Don. Alabama and John Brennan teams focus on layup and three pointers, and that's why they you know, because of how well they passed the ball how well they moved the ball. They're very high and assist totals. I heard you talking about this earlier one of the best teams in the country every year in history assist to turnover ratio. You'll go percentage three point field goal percentage in two point field goal percentage. I think they're going to see an exciting style of basketball. The defensive focus is still going to be there. It's just going to be different. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Right. A lot of the most exciting times and Cincinnati basketball or when they were pressing and really forcing teams out of their comfort zone. The I think the most interesting line for me. When he talked about how they defend he said, we don't let teams run plays. We force them to make plays. And that really stood out to me on on what his style of. But the Bettino thing makes sense. Because he's some the Billy Donovan Trie. That's a great Billy Donovan from the Patino tree. So it kind of makes sense that in philosophy with that. That's kinda where his head is at and how he wants to play. So I think you see fans are in for. A wakeup call. Let's let's put it that way you to kind of fighting through games. And it was a it was a winning style was fantastic. But you're going to be awake from opening tip. Now, he is jed Brendel of your bearcat fan. And you're not checking out bearcat journal dot com. You're missing out all over.

"Course the big news breaking yesterday. Just getting off the air talk about a net is after thirteen seasons. Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Mick Cronin is headed west to UCLA and. Kind of an interesting contract. They're paying him by height. He's getting six million dollars per foot. Joining me to talk about it as Chad brendor with bearcat journal dot com. Check morning. How are you? I'm doing pretty well. I'm doing fine. Are you surprised that Mick Cronin tongue around this long? I mean it especially the last contract. It's that like that that that you see was coming up with a lot of money for him certainly twenty four million dollars nothing they can even touch, but I look at this and go at thirteen years he's been here. A long time. That's the price is good. As a tactician is a good recruiters is. I'm surprised hasn't left sooner. I mean, it was going to take a job like UCLA for him to ever leave. So I'm not surprised in that sense. Because this is really the first, you know, true blueblood job that has has come along and presented itself. Because of his family and his ties to the area leaving for Cusco LUSA or Blackbird or other parts unknown in the middle of nowhere college council, and that's not really his personality. So I think in that regard. I'm not surprised, but when you see LA came open, it was pretty clear, they came after Mick that it was gonna probably be an issue Cincinnati retaining the coach at the same time though. I look at UCLA and he's easily the seven thousand candidate on the list for that head coaching job. Yes. And no, I mean, some of that is I think greatly over exaggerated because there was no chance that John Cava Perry was gonna coach they called Brad Stevens. Tony Bennett could have got Tony Bennett last year that they would have fired Alford when they should have you probably could have got him after he lost in the first round of sixteen. Couldn't do get him after he won a national championship. So realistically there were two guys that were out of him in gave me Dixon. Rick Barnes that we're actually willing to listen and potentially could take the job. I think some of that is overstated just because there again, you talk about a blue blood job opening they have to put out this space that they contacted Billy Donovan and Brad Stevens and John Calipari and Mike chef ski and anybody else that has a big name one of those people were taking that job. It's just not realistic. Yeah. And eventually came back to Cronin, but he'd been rumored to be I don't know. A bunch of different schools as well. He moves on to greener pastures ESL Edmonds gonna get paid. He deserves to even the as many appearances he's made in the postseason in successes programs. Have had over the years, you have a sense, and maybe it was part of the negotiation negotiating I wasn't found that closely, but that he had an issue with you see and what they were offering him. The got the ball rolling on this. Or is that just coincidence think there was certainly a an opportunity for them to have maybe tried to meet in the middle somewhere. And it just didn't happen. I don't know if it's a problem with UC as much as. A rough situation. They're not in one of those conferences that get say fifty million dollars a year paycheck. They get a two million dollars a year paycheck right now from the American conference. So you know, that I think is is probably somewhat if at the root of this. He wanted things UC wanted things, and they didn't find a way to make the marriage continue and after thirteen years that usually leads to divorce and they got a divorce yesterday. That's for sure. Yeah. That's that. No doubt about it. So thirteen years he left the program. No question in much much better shape than than he got it. That's for sure. Yeah. When he got it. It was Cedric McGowan and a and a walked on refugee transfer from Hurricane Katrina. Three, right. Terrible. He was able to recruit and do very well to the point where multiple postseason appearances in the tournament. And in addition to that safe to say, I would fully credited him in the success of the program with having a renovated through boosters, obviously money fifth third arena. It's it's a beautiful building. It's going to be a lot easier for the next guy coming record. Yeah. It was you know, there was a push for that and make with certainly at the forefront of making that push for getting third arena renovated. It was one of those things to you. Never know our renovation is gonna look because it's the same building still say walls. And when I walked in there a couple days before they opened it like holy cow. They got this right beyond belief almost two right of funny because there were a lot of people throughout the season that complained that the atmosphere wasn't rowdy. You know? Why is it a lot of stuff to do in that place? People hanging out at the bar. You know, people are walking around getting capable Johm and LA's. And you know, there was a lot to do. They created a an EMMY vent out of the arena self, and they need to be commended because they they did a really really good job of of turning that from a basically glorified high school gym into a structure that they want to go to Dan's wanna hang out watch game. And and be part of what's happening at UC now. So there's deserves a lot of credit for that Mike bone in the department do as well. Forget nothing. Yeah. I agree again. It's. On the show this morning on seven hundred w w Chad Reynolds with bearcat journal and talking about the Mick Cronin. Move to UCLA which obviously opens up a vacancy here in Cincinnati. And whoever steps ins inheriting, a really good situation at this point two. So the names being thrown around include. I think this one is really interesting that nor says coach John Brennan probably on the shortlist, if not the I don't know if you've consensus candidate, but look at what this guy's done at such a small school is yet again makes it to the postseason wins a conference in a birth in the NC double A yet. Again, the N K New York, the N K U Norse many would say over cheating small school is a time for their head. Coach John Brennan to take center stage at UC. Well, I admit to being a thousand percent biased on this. I started by my media broadcast whatever career Kevin teen years old at Marshall university. And John Brennan just to be a Jew. On the Mercer university basketball team at that point. And from northern Kentucky, we became friends we've been friends ever since this was twenty four years ago. So I'm a little bias on the John Brennan. Right. I do think he you know, he he's shown to be a very very good coach, he really navigated the waters in K. You getting them into the tournament their first year that they were eligible they've been two times in three years year, they go they won the regular season and got into the. I think you would you know, you would love the job. He'd love to be able to keep his family in the area to have his dad come to games much. Like Nick did. I think it would mean a lot to him. And he's definitely got to be somebody that if he's not top of list, you've got to be at or near it. I think probably just deserving a look because the you often don't see a a college basketball coach changed teams chain links. Stay in the same city or stay in the same house for that. Right. That's that's that's incredible. And it's so true that could only happen in Cincinnati. Yeah. And it's actually been pretty cool because in K you kind of become like, the everybody's favourite other t. Yeah. Nowhere UC fans are Xavier's. Your fans are rooting for you, see, but all of them seem to pretty much toll free. And you John Brennan. It was really cool thing to watch is kind of the past couple years of played out. And they've gone. You know, made that move from division two into being relevant division one program in a pretty good league in the horizon league in really cool to watch. Yeah. Has for years now wouldn't even knew K you had athletics in the last two years. He's the guy who put them on the map. Yeah. A lot of that is they played Kentucky to your three years ago in the AA tournament and gave him a heck of a game. And really this year outside of one, you know, big scoring run. They were right there with Texas Tech it halftime. And you know that game. Interesting in Texas Tech ends up in overtime losing the championship game. So he really has done an impressive job with that program and cultivated the best player in history and drew McDonald. So he has to be somebody that that you see take a hard look at when they're going through this search, I would think Chad Brendel on the acute hearing, center dot com hotline from bearcat journal. And now that mic is a fishery the head coach at UCLA who's gonna be the next head coach of the Bearcats. That's we're talking about this morning on seven hundred w w at noon today brew is in for Gary Jeff Walker who is in for Willie and brew will be talking to Justin Williams in on Cronin. About this to the topic continues this morning on seven hundred wwl w much like hotel, California. Chad you can check out, but you can never leave fat mount. Of course, one time head coach Xavier leaves for greener pastures, he goes to a high of state. He winds up being out of coaching. Now, what almost three years is there a chance that Mata comes back to Cincinnati. I mean, it's definitely possible. I I think the main thing that they had really is the health of that act. Crazy pop quiz. How do you think that is? Thad Matta is fifty to fifty fifty four fifty one. Oh, she's really he was when he left Ohio State any looked like he was about sixty his back was so bad. Yeah. You're right about that. I forgot about the back thing. So it's just a matter of if he would be healthy enough. I know he is looked around at jobs, I know UCLA because of the health concerns initially they passed on him. So I think that has to be something that you keep in mind. But if he would entertain it, you know, and and I know he has a very good relationship with Luke sickle from both of their times at Ohio State, if he would entertain you you have talked because very few people and he's been a Butler. He's been at Davies been at Ohio State. He's been multiple final fours. He's been a championship game. He's good coaches. You can find it on the market right now. And he knows how to recruit this area. Really? Well, so right. I think you have to check it at least, they hey, you know, let's talk in and see if we can pick you out what your situation is. Would you be helping to do this? And and if he is I think he would be a very good. I r-. What about the Nick Van? Excellent. I think from a personality standpoint, again, someone who has roots to to Cincinnati from UCA's final UC's final four team obviously NBA superstar knick fan axl talks good smack game in the like someone with that kind of personality as far as you head coaching job..

"On their side run in March. You look at the stats, Chad Brando from bearcat journal and gosh, what eight guys or six guys with eight points or better in led by Jaren comprehended eighteen point six, so I mean, I see a lot of balance, and I see, you know, Mick Scott some options when it comes to to put in five guys on the floor. The depth of the team has been a bit of a surprise because they have so many new parts didn't really know what you were going to get there's been some inconsistency by somebody else's always answered the bow. When Brune struggled early in the year. And now starting to get back on track jumping Jennifer's making shot. Great Scott Brooks good season, so far. And then you're even starting to see guys like Logan Johnston. Trevor more, Sean rhetoric Connecticut game against Memphis. Now that bench starting to develop and the wearing teams. You thought Memphis. They're able to get those winds late on the road because they were the fresher team. And chad. Yeah. What worries me is falling behind and even by double digits in the second half, and then really fighting back. But you're right. The depth on this team. And you know, the ability to play defense and keep the turnovers down in the second half and putting the biscuit in the basket really really helps. Yeah. I will tell you check. If they go down double digits at Houston. It's probably not going to be a fun zone that Ian defensively is a different animal. They're in the top twenty. Defensively. Kelvin Sampson is basically built a clone of Mick Cronin's program. And I think for a while are going to be the Jew that are battling at top the American athletic conference. But yeah, the no turnovers in that second half was incredible. Especially Memphis force turnovers in the first seven or eight minutes. Yeah. Ten by halftime. And then Cincinnati doesn't turn it over the entire second half. And that allowed them more jobs. It allowed them more. They dominated the offensive glass. I think it's sixteen to three advantage at one point and they were able to just wear Memphis down and eventually the game away. And that was the only team that had beaten Memphis at Memphis is number one in the country. And that game was Memphis scored ninety plus points. Yeah. So the defense is now starting to come down and look a little bit more. Like what we back from a Mick Cronin defense you mix that with an offense that in the top thirty and you have game that that looks really dangerous here in early February. You talked about some of the balance and some of the guys coming off the bench man when they needed a boost their gosh. Oh, was it. Logan johnson. May I kid, you know, with with the energy that he brings in your right up? Sean Fredericks has the potential and Trevor more. I mean, the list goes on and on they got some size and yet they can alter shots and. Yeah, just a little bit of everything depending on what they need. It seems like. Yeah. And I think it's thirteen years. I think this has been mckernan's best coaching job. And I think a lot of that also comes down to you just got a lot of a lot of guys that did pretty well together. Even when you start getting into those rotations and you start getting into the bench. They've been going small a little bit more lately. The and using like a travel more at our forward go on with the four guard lineup even use Logan Johnson. Who's the point guard? The power forward spot at Memphis because of our Memphis was so he's getting to a point now where you can make the match with some things can move guys around a little bit. He can do some offense defense substitutions. It's just got to be a really on team to coach because they can dance a lot of different dances right now. In Jaren for all his talent. Showing some unselfishness to until crunch it till it's really crunch time. But yeah, he's willing to distribute the basketball. He might be the best Nick Bennett Cincinnati. Well, I just hedge ability to feed them more, and he's got such an incredibly high. I you a lot of that comes from. You know, when you're little you go to the core pick up all of your friends. Garron was playing pickup all with his dad. Twenty-five thirty year old Brenton. And learn the game he was going to get beat up and and pushed around, and that's given him just a great deal for what you do. When did drive when do attack when to make the right path, and he's turning into a guy that really has an incredible all around game. And I think these days for his senior season check, you're talking about the next all American at Cincinnati. Yeah, we're talking with Chad Brando here in Chad. You know, you look at Jaren and you talk about his upbringing served him. Well, because you know. Teams are playing him very physically. And yet he is answering that physicality. Don't like it helps that he's not one of those long Guinea, you know, really bounty at Berkeley athletic guys can take a beating and he's got the body of a defensive end. So it doesn't really do a whole lot to distract them. And it was funny when he got the gap. A guy named Robert front defensive line coach he's now the head coach at Hampton. And I was standing with Robert one day and dumber outside the Leonard center. And we were talking and jerem walk by any immediately looked to me like that. And how do I get him on my defense? That's that's just physically. He's just built to be able to take quite a bit of punishment. And yet, you're you're seeing that because games are grabbing him quantum old nam, and he's doing a good job using it you get to the free throw line, and and get up, you know, right? Twenty twenty two and he's averaging twenty two and a half points a game in American athletic conference play. You see is twenty fifth. They were finally able to crack the top twenty five. What would it mean to go into Houston tomorrow? Chopped down the twelfth ranked Cougars, man. Well, more than anything. It would put them in the driver heat for the American athletic conference regular season title. But almost going to have to do it. If they want to win the thing outright because Houston. Scheduled down the stretch is much easier than what the ninety s. Fade. It's.

"The Cincinnati Bengals heavy new head coach. Now, it's a matter of putting the staff together, he's got some offensive guys. He's got a new strength and conditioning guy. But what about the defensive side of the football? And yes, there are some guys that have been bailing on them. Jack del Rio is not not interested in the defensive coordinator job. So where do the Bengals go from here? It's up to sack Taylor to find the right fit and Carlos Dunlap a little bummed out that some guys are bailing. Dom capers. He also took himself out of the opportunity for the job and. Carlos Dunlap says on his Instagram account, these meaning the defensive coordinators, I keep reading that pass on the job show me the better roster you dream enough. I need answers. Thanks. Yeah. Defensive coordinators are bailing out. But where Carlos Dunlap is coming from the reds have outstanding talent in the form of Gino Atkins, Kara Lawson himself Carlos Dunlap, and then a secondary in William Jackson and Jessie Bates, so the cupboard isn't fair there. So the defensive coordinator that comes in is going to be rewarded not just with this talent. But with more talent coming hopefully in free agency and the draft. We've reached the bottom of the hour break, we're gonna talk some UCLA basketball next. Withdrawn Chad Brendel of bearcat journal when we return on seven hundred wwl w. News, traffic and weather. "Think the one thing with cycle is the most an exactly how to say this is the most non head football coach football coach I've ever been around there. There's no coach. There's no ego and arrogance that that that makes them maniacal. You know being around Brian Kelly, and Butch Jones even cover Ville to some extent, you know, those guys all had kind of a a traditional like what you expect from a head football coach Lou pickles, almost like like, you're on call really successful uncle that you see at the holidays. It gives you good advice and. Has a couple years and always says the right thing round family, and and is doing really well in life like thickly, just a normal guy that happens to hip grown up playing football and being very good at it. And I think you saw that in his football team that that it was very Cincinnati. It was very workman-like. It was they said the right things. They did the right thing that Clayton heart, and they won the city over. And I think we'll tickle is in the team taking on his personality is a big part of that. He's been great. And I love that attitude. That's a great Suzanne people love look fickle here in Cincinnati, and you wonder too if you're you're the cutting obviously he comes in here has his own guys Taylor does. But you know, at some point does does someone like Luke fickle make that jump to the NFL and in a few years, indeed do it as a coordinated position. But what better place than situation to do it here in Cincinnati? Hopefully, the the teams on an upswing. Now, we got to get going. Appreciate it. Chad Brendel with a bearcat journal dot com in the B C J podcast, which he house. Thanks again. Buddy. Thanks weekend. There you go. "Let's keep moving. No reason to slow down with got hoops coming your way bottom of the hour. You see and you see L Bruins in town for the first time ever. I'm fired up about. Visit a for the Bearcats on two fronts basketball tonight football throughout the day was early this morning. The fax machine started cranking out names letters of intent. We'll get to that. In just a second one. We talked Bearcats. Let's turn to the guy for bearcat journal. He is Chad Brenda. How are you? Ramped, actually, the fax machine days are done. Really? I didn't know that. What how did they do it? Now, they take pictures on their phone. Remm. They send a picture of their letter of intent to compliance in that process now, well that is much better and much easier. How did I miss this? I is this is this the first year is this been going on and I've just been oblivious. No, I think it started some last year. Here it kind of became commonplace. So no more facts camera. Remember that? Oh, the camera. Yes. I do. Well, that's that makes me. That's very good. All right. Let me do basketball. I then we'll get to football this. If you go back to let's see I'm looking at it. If you go back to you and a at UNLV, then Xavier N K U at Mississippi State and tonight UCLA that's a five game swath of basketball. They win tonight. That's foreign one in that chunk of games. X pretty darn good. Is it not? Yeah. I was thinking if they can get through that three and two they'd be in pretty good shape or one would-be outstanding for, you know, especially if you rewind to halftime of the higher state game. Yes. Progress that this team has made over the past month and a half is then has been really really solid, but they need to back it up tonight with a win because at three and two with losses to probably the two best teams. You don't feel as warm and fuzzy as you would form one no question, I'm Keith Williams. The the the the improvement the impact the reliable present scoring wise. He's become did you think back to when we talk preseason. Did you see something like this coming this soon for Keith Williams? Short and simple answer. No. I thought it was going to be a year that keep was going to show a lot of improvement. But I also thought it was gonna be a year that he battled a lot with inconsistency as his role drastically improved increase. I did not in a million years. Thank number two leading score into the starting rotation. And the I mean, and I was as as high on keep Orioles is pretty much anybody in the country as a recruit. I just didn't know that. It was going to happen. This fast for him. And the impact he's made especially offense, rebounding. And and with his athleticism. Nicotine talked about this. When he made the switch when you got Justin Jennifer, and Jaren Cumberland is two guys in your back court. You don't have a lot of length and athleticism. Right. And there was there was a need there that really Williams was the only guy on the roster that could still that need, and boy he is just taking with taking it and ran with it like like like, you wouldn't believe, and I am floored. I'm really happy for him to keep a great kid. He worked hard loves basketball and to see him take this jump like he has been pretty fun to watch the Chad last three games. Cain broom has scored nine points. He's two of sixteen in that span. What why what's what's up with came broom? And what needs to change? How does it change? He gets them these little little punks. And and he's got to figure out mentally how to play through that. I think the biggest thing for him right now. He was a forty percent three point shooter last year. He's shooting twenty percent, maybe less right now. He's got to find his rhythm from the perimeter and get better look for himself. He's taking a lot of tough long twos right now. Which when he's in rhythm can be a pretty good shot for him. But when he's kind of forcing things any and he's taken them, you know, maybe when he shouldn't maybe when the defense is still around or when it's not as clean look. You know, he's just he's a bad funk right now. I know he's got some things going on back home better that are weighing heavy on him. And he needs them. Especially now, you know, you've got Jaren pieces proven to be pretty reliable gray, Scott is giving you you know, points at the four if you get that six-man pop. Yeah. And get third cane can get back to being some instant offense offense off the bench. It's a much different team offensively, and hopefully one that you're not worried about grinding out sixty five sixty five point games because you can get up into the seventies. Badding thirteen point start football on the news of the day. If if you're a bear cat fan listening right now, tell them what they should be excited about from today's news. I think more than anything and year. This is his tickles third recruiting class at Cincinnati. They were able to go get some guys that weren't necessarily. We have to fill these holes. Yeah. Gaping holes in the roster. One kid. I I really love in this classic and then Dorian Holloway. An ally. Oh, kid and he's six foot four two hundred and five pounds safety in high school. He's probably gonna play that hybrid safety linebacker position here. You know, a guy like that. Now, they don't they don't have to rush him onto the field. Today can take a kid that needs to develop a little bit is probably about their weight class in what they could get athletically. If wasn't raw the now, you have a little time because people fail to remember. What was the story line on this team back in August and September third youngest team in the country. A team with seventy three freshmen and sophomores on the roster. Bingo, which is crazy. So now, you can take some guys they got to deepen prevents that are six four and six six those long athletic defensive end then needed a little bit more time to develop. So now, you have that time you can bring these guys in and you're not rushing him onto the field in their first and second year, you're saying we've got a couple of guys in front of you that are now going to be juniors or whatever. Now you can develop. Now, you can take a little bit of time put on the weight, the right way and learn our system and then by the time, you're a redshirt freshmen redshirt sophomore, or whatever then we're going to need you. And I think that was the underlying theme of the class outside of maybe one or two guys that I think can come in and and really make an impact right away. Chad. Is it safe to say that going from four and eight to ten and two this year opened up the front doors to more living-rooms some where you'll see that more is in twenty twenty. A lot of the heavy lifting for this class was done in the summer. So, you know, most of these kids committed back in June, July where you're going to see a change. Now..

"Stay tuned America journal dot com, as we get into January and February when they have what are called junior days, which is where generally kids from mostly close Ohio within one hundred miles or so they start coming to basketball games. And I have a feeling those lists are going to be very impressive when we get into that next phase of recruiting looking forward to twenty twenty one. Those are gonna be the type of guys where now it's gonna be like okay now, we're really swinging for the fences because we've got a we're now winning. We can now go into the living room and say, it's not a it's not a pipe dream. We're not showing you. We hope we can win. We're actually in a position where we're gonna win double digit games every year things go. Well, Chad before I let you run great catch it up. I just thought of Gino Gula just popped into my head because he and I know recently was named a thirty five for thirty five lists thirty five of the brightest young coaches under the age of thirty five he his star seems to be shining, brighter and brighter by day. Can it can you just speak to the sense? You're getting for the impact he's having an Israel. You see I think right now he's the best recruiter on staff. And and that's after only being here for a year. I think he has developed a great relationship with Luke cycle. If you get the two of them. It's actually funny. They they had a kick decommit and. Committed. He's probably gonna end up at Miami of Florida. And we were joking around today, Gino couldn't get a hold of him. And and my seventeen year old high school student that covers recruiting for me was able to get a hold of them and watching process chops on now, maybe I need to bring a seventeen year old and to be on my staff to get a hold of these kids. Have developed a very very fast relationship. I tell you. I I don't know how long it's going to be here. I would think it's going to be for a while. I don't think he's gonna don't think he's telling his assistant coaches are not allowed to buy houses. Right. As the guy. That's now in Southend edge. But I think you're starting to see a progression. Whereas when if and win looks tickle hanged them up as the head coach of Cincinnati. Gene-o good duly stands a very good chance of being the guy down the road. And that would be for him. And for everybody involved. That would be unbelievable, absolutely. Last thought this is a it's a big day. But it's so much more than just a day. It's year round stuff. And you guys do it. Like, nobody's business. Give those listening an idea of what bearcat journal dot com has on all this. We've got fully valuations on all thirteen kids that signed. I did a podcast after the press conference went upstairs and talk to you Marcus Freeman and Mike. Ben Brock got a an evaluation on each of the kids that are in this recruiting class from the offensive and defensive coordinator, we've got stories on. Decline shepherd who flipped from temple to Cincinnati today safety commit that and full coverage tonight did game against the UCLA. Bruins. You know? It's big lands. I was I was having my dinner, and I looked over and sitting next to me, Mike, the Coursey all well. Yeah. I mean that is known Decatur if he drives down from Indianapolis, you know, you've got a big game on your hands. Although he was here for a higher state. Instead of they lose today. Mix probably not gonna let him back in the. And the funny thing was that night. He had just come off the Duke the wild Duke game, the high in in watched UCLA just shoot bricks for most of that. Yeah. A little better than that. Tonight. My friend. Absolutely. He's Chad Brando bear catcher and Ola bearcat journal dot com. Chad thank you. Thank you and take care of look forward to it. Chad brenner. Let me do this. Because big dates said lands, do not forget, you have two pairs two pairs to give away. And I said Dade calm down. I got this timed out. I'm going to save us an opportunity right now. "Outs of dealing with. Memphis are not easy. He's a legend. He's penny. So maybe it is a little easier for for him than it has been for some others. But I think he's already experienced this guy doesn't like that guy. And this guy doesn't want to play with that guy. And there's some of that stuff going on behind the scenes that he has to learn to navigate. So I think he's going to be successful. I'm probably more. Bullish on him as a coach than some. Because I he's won three straight state titles in the state of Memphis granted, he's had some ridiculously talented teens, but he does have some coaching chops. We'll see if it translates to to a level like the American, and I don't mind penny being at Memphis because Cincinnati already has is number. They beat him four times in nineteen Ninety-two lights to go to the final four. I remember that four times I do. So they have is number. It's on the well, they actually I heard it's number is going to be on the wall is a new fifth third arena renovation tomorrow. The the collective strength of the big east and for the record. And I'll say this to your face. I did not have a vote nor did I cast that vote. If I had it for the Butler BULLDOGS to get the other vote in the big east how that was a wild move. Well, I mean, it's gotta be J. Right. I would assume who I wouldn't. Yeah. That was my first thought, and he probably just doesn't really care. So he was like we'll pick Butler because they usually beat us. They hammer us once a year. And also, we'll throw them a vote. Yeah. Please don't beat us that bad this year. How beyond Villanova the the the next pack of teams is is how big in that conference. Because it just is it Villanova. To Paul and everybody, I think I think it's two through eight I think nine and ten being depaul and Creighton are kind of going to be a little bit below everyone else by Saint John's has taken a step forward. And everyone else is kind of in that middle of the pack where they've been and it just I don't think there's going to be much separation at the top. I think Villanova uses about five games maybe four or five they might be a little more susceptible this year than they had the last two last year. They lost a few games that people didn't expect in conference play too. So I think you've got that. And then everyone after that will be in the five hundred range a game or two above five hundred game or two below or right at it of the. Of the the sophomores on the roster. Chad the that second year, jump I think there's three of them you give me a guy who you think makes a a decent jump in. Now his second year for the it was really only to because. Got a medical redshirt. I mean, I think it's gonna bounce back and forth between the two wings between Trevor Moore and Keith Williams. Some nights the game plan is going to be more suited to Keith in his athleticism and slashing ability other nights. You know, Trevor Moore is going to bang in a couple of threes. And I from what I heard from the super-secret scrimmage. This is all allegedly the offense was kinda struggling to get going in the in the early going of that game and then bang bang. He had a couple of threes and got things kind of rolling, and that's the type of ability that he has when he plays within himself. He can be a huge spark. He can get you six nine points and a couple of trips and changed the momentum of the game. But I think between the two of them. It's going to be split. It's going to be a night tonight thing. But how many minutes are really canes plan off the ball and Jared's playing with him as the two and the three. You know, there's talk about Rashawn Frederick's plan some four behind trae, Scott. So what minutes are there for Keith Williams and Trevor Moore as the season goes along, and how many do they earn? Yeah. I think it's a big question along the lines of minutes heard last year didn't get a lot maybe five minutes a game. Think played one hundred in the season. How what what is a role what kind of role is? There for harden. What what is an expectation and your two for you. I I think people forget he was a four star recruit. What was he not? It was kinda like just outside the top one hundred type of guy a guy with some expectations coming in. I don't think anyone thought he would be a star. Right, right. He last year. He looked far away from being. This year. They're going to need minutes from him point blank. I don't think the freshman county. Kennedy is really the only other backup guard. They would have is ready to sort of leapfrog him yet. So he's going to get an opportunity. How big is that opportunity? Try to steal set at media day. He feels like he wants an eight-man rotation that would seem to include Elias hardened with the two freshman county. Kenya Dante's James being nine and ten year. So I'm thinking, maybe twelve to fifteen minutes, and it probably depends on the matchup and more. Importantly, it depends on how allies hard and his handling things. I mean, you know with with quitting good. Now. He's been getting some backup duty at point guard spot. So his versatility is hoping him. His skill is helping him some he's got to put it together. Gotta show the confidence that one he knows what he's doing on. Both ends nowhere knows where he's supposed to be. But then also he's just gotta make some shots this team needs someone to make perimeter shots. And he's one of the guys potentially capable of doing that. If he finds a role as a shooter he could really see his minutes increased quickly to get to Bearcats musketeers doing it all with. Chad Brenda bearcat journal. "Studios. Available now, I heart radio. Eight twenty one. Hundred wwl w I got to admit our segment off. There would be a fantastic podcast. It may may have may topped our first segment you said, I was subdued when I came in here. Anymore? I know all the hot buttons just punch. It all started it. He did start it. He is Rick roaring of musketeer report along with Chad Brenda bearcat journal, talking Bearcats and musketeers for for the musketeer faithful wondering why they know who's gone. They knew that includes the coach how much I and I'm not talking specific players. But when they watch Xavier for the first time how much of the way they look will be different from the way they played under Chris if that makes sense. Well, I think a lot of people wanna talk about this and make it a Travis steel, Chris Mack style. Not. And I think they will look a little different this year. But it won't be because those coaches have different styles necessarily, it'll be more because their personnel is vastly different. Last year. They were skilled offense was their strength. They could really pass really shoot this year. They don't have shooters. They're gonna have to rely on getting the ball into the paint getting paint touches getting to the free throw line by drawing fouls off of. Penetration and overall they're just going to have to rely on their defence a whole lot more than the have the last two or three years under Chris MAC, and I don't think that necessarily means Travis deals going to do things differently entirely. What they're going to have to create more tempo. More pace more turnovers, whatever they can do on the defensive end to spark their offense. So in a perfect world. Is this Xavier teams defensive capabilities? Are they capable of being a good defense a very good defense and excellent defense where on the scale of expectations in your mind? I mean, that's that's the great question right now. I mean, if they're a great defense, well, maybe their top three or four or five in the big east. They're an okay defense, the probably somewhere in the bottom half of the conference. I would guess I think overall they have tremendous Lanc tremendous athleticism and a ton of versatility. Meaning guys can guard two three four positions when they're on the court. So they don't have too many guys other than Ryan. Well, it's the grad transfer. We talked about earlier that our guys. I can't really defend last year. You had two three four guys at a time. Sometimes that couldn't defend so they should be much improved. But again, that's all it's all relative, Chad. We know we know Kane brew. We know what he does best attack score. And he's going to be doing that off the ball. And that was that's always been a topic of great debate with fans, and how they view Kane, and what he should be doing for those wonder fearful doubting whatever he's going to be operating. A lot off the ball this season. Correct. Correct. That's the plan, and it's been happening for months, and generally when he's on the red team, which is where he's been most of the time Logan Johnson is playing point guard. So freshman, the freshman the two point guards for this team are gonna be Justin Jennifer and Logan Johnson. And I think you'll also see Jaren Cumberland spent some time, you know, facilitating he's by far the best passer on the team. I don't think it's really even close. I don't think people appreciate that the his I q. Passing ability makes him fun to watch from that standpoint. Yeah. And I think that's going to be one of the big keys to this season. Because you know, when when not everybody likes to say this team's going to be a lot like John Apache senior year, Jaren Cumberland has infinite times better a passer in a distributor, then Sean co Patrick, so if you're sending the house, Jaren Cumberland, there's a good chance you get burned. Like I heard on the Notre Dame game. He didn't shoot particularly. Well, he didn't have a great scoring night. But he had at least seven assists, and that goes with Tennessee's they had in the red and black scrimmage and another seven or eight assists. You had in the clothes scrimmage, if he's consistently producing five six seven, eight assists tonight. I mean, then you know, the the offense is is working. Well, so I think you can live with him at point some and came brooms never played point guard until he got here people just assume because he's small and he's fast. He's that. He's played a lot of point guard. He hasn't. He's generally been off the ball. And that's where he's more comfortable is is Logan Johnson capable as a freshman of what giving them twelve to fifteen ten to twelve dwells probably twelve I'd say twelve is about the right range. I think if you're also mckernan you have to have an eye on the future, you're to seniors that handle the ball a lot. And broom and Jennifer gone, and you never know with Cumberland. I've seen some some draft stuff with him in the mid to upper thirties. We saw Jacob Evans about it that same range a year ago. I if you lose all three of those guys, and even if you lose two of them Logan Johnson's the point guard next year, and you're going to have to get him as much experience as you can I think fans have gotten a glimpse of him a little bit. And what they saw in the red black scrimmage. Everybody was going nuts because he was he was really good. Rick. You're around these guys. And when they're pick six in the big east, how much of that is is how much of that is a fuel for a motivation or a chip that cliche. But chip on a shoulder. Is there any sense of that like screw everybody will show them? I think there is to an extent especially after you win the conference last year to come back the next year and be seeing that you're six and you get credit for that. While Villanova gets the minimum now while they're losing. Well, I think that bothers them a little bit. But at the same time, I think they knew to expect that a little bit that wasn't as much prize too. I think the group of guys as it was they've been with nausea Marshall since last. Here. They know how talented he is. They've seen them in practice every day leading up to this. I think they all know, he's an all conference performer. The fact that none of their teammates were on the all conference lists, and non she was just honorable mention all of them seem to raise an eyebrow. At that and want to talk about that during media day yesterday. So I think that's as much of a motivating factor. Is you really think they're none of our players on our roster within the top ten or even maybe fifteen of this conference. That's that's the pill. They're not willing to swallow Naji Marshall, he's you'll you'll nod your head. He's going to be a star. I mean, the guy I mean, he's just real. I mean, when the final breakthrough comes the net, whatever that next, and I I guess I'll ask it that way. What this season the next step for nauseous game is what in your mind, it's officiency and just adding to his overall confidence on the offensive, and he's so much raw ability is athletic and his talent takes over. And we saw that a lot is a freshman. Now, it's Kenny be more refined. Can you be more efficient not have the silly turnovers where he? He just loses control not have the wild shots finish a little bit better certainly shoot better from the outside which is never going to be the strength of his game. But something I can think he'd be a thirty five thirty six percent three point shooter unlimited attempt. So I think it's just sort of refining that overall package, but in terms of like actually keeping him in front of you or being able to guard him very difficult task Jeb before we hit news, I left this off on Justin Jennifer, who I I don't I don't think he. And I'm not saying, by any extent, he's a star. But I don't think people appreciate his officiency from assisted turnovers. I mean, I looked it up today last year ninety one assists to twenty four turnovers for his career hundred ninety three assist. Only fifty seven turnovers in thirteen hundred minutes at UC. He's not going to dazzle. He's not going to be spectacular. But he's going to he's going to get the ball into the hands of the guys to get the best shot. Yeah. I think that also is the turnover part that mckernan just beats that India. Cindy, you that he firmly believe that the one of the most critical parts of offense is not turning the ball over and and given up easy basket as a result too. He's he's had the luxury of the last two years. Gary Kyle Jacobs. Jaren being around him this year. They're going to need him to do what he's done and take care of the ball. But you're going to need him to be a little bit more productive in terms of a score. He's gonna probably. You know, if they're if they're driving kick team like has been kind of the plan. Yeah. He's going to get some open looks from three and a half to knock. Yeah. I was going to say can he shoot he's a career thirty six percent shooter. Could he needs to be rains forty-one percent? Forty-two percent three point shooter. If he does that and he can get up to seven eight nine points a game, the raised eyebrows. From Rick is something along the lines of good luck with that was that what those raised eyebrows work. More more power tool if that's the plan the sheer. I don't want to have separate you two.
