"Changing that rule. But in the scholarship is going to go away. I mean, back in the day, when Bear Bryant had his greatness, it was because he put everybody on scholarship. Well, now you can just pay your best guy on the team or you 5 or 6 people. We're not going to put you on scholarship. But it's going to give you an IL receives money. That way we've still got more scholarships to give out and ultimately your pass the 85 as high as you want. Yeah, that you've asked a really great question there. And I'm not sure I know how to answer that, but I think it's worth getting a good answer. Is that a gray area? Is that something that current by law deals with, but it's really you're right. Back in the day. There's no reason to give you a scholarship to give you this great IL deal. I use this scholarship on somebody else and then you're 120 people. I don't think I don't know if there are any other hoops you have to go through, but I'm going to pose that question to administrator and come back and give you an answer before I try to pontificate on something I really have no earthly idea what the answer is. John is up next in Missouri. Hello, John. Hey, Paul. Huge razorback fan, I love the razorbacks. Northwest magical place. That's very encouraged about what I saw last year. The improvement of the team, but I was watching the spring game and oh my gosh, it just looks like Burks has left such a big hole. I'm really worried. What do you think about the razorbacks this year? I kind of want to get your opinion. I don't know. Yeah, and I didn't see the spring game, but I will tell you that you just don't know the circumstances of what happened on the spring game or what I remember there was some issues with that. So I feel really good about the razorbacks. Maybe I should have watched this friend game. I think there are legitimate contender based on the experts with whom I speak and having talked to Sam Pittman many, many times. So don't read too much into that. I had a former South Carolina player tell me last year about this time. He had gone to a few practices. And said, I don't think we'll win three games in Columbia. And look how that team put it together. You just there's a there are a lot of pieces that you probably haven't seen yet. So we'll continue the conversation here. "This is the Paul Fein bomb show hour three podcast. And we all welcome you back here, second half the show has been a busy one. We have Heather Dennis coming up will get her reaction to what George cleave told us the other day he is the PAC 12 commissioner. Had some strong comments about where we are with the CFP expansion. Let's check out Scott, who is up next in Knoxville, hey Scott. Hey, Paul, how are you doing, man? Very well. Thank you. Yeah, I just want to ask you about you got two colors that call in our time bragging on herself. Yeah. One of them is legend. I believe his name and the other one is jammed from Tesla. They brought a governor staff all the time. I know everything, but they must have graduated from Alabama and got a BS degree. Don't you talk so? I think they're both extremely well educated, yes. They talk like they are anyway. But we only like to have the best on this show. We don't want people that don't know what they're talking about here, of course. Oh, okay. Leave me out. No, no. We need some just regular folks, too. I mean, so you and you and I will feel more comfortable when we talk to those Ivy League educated callers like the team you mentioned. Right. Well, I thought I might have to ask them to time it down a little bit, so I can understand them. Well, I will, I will handle that for you. Thank you very much. How about clay up next to hey, good afternoon. Hey, mister hi, bob. I'm glad to hear that you and yours are doing well. Thank you so much. I've got 8. I've got a quick two part Paul Bear Bryant store and it's rather serendipitous that I've been listening to you for many years since you were in Birmingham. Thank you. But this is my first time calling and getting through today. So like I said, rather serendipitous I believe a bit more of the share of the story with you for a while. Wonderful. So I'll start at the end of the story, which is the day of little kid living in law Mississippi at the time of fathers to some let's go on a truck ride let's go for a drive. And he sits me down. I'm in the passenger seat. Of course, a little kid should drive a truck. He says, San, I need to tell you something. And it popped into my head, first and last time this has ever happened. And I thought to myself, Paul Bear Bryant, and I had no way of knowing that. And then he proceeded to tell me that Bear Bryant passed away. And that was rather weird it still gives me chill bumps to this day. And clay, how old were you at the time? I was, I would have been either, let's see. The day he passed away. So 9 years old. Yes, I was 9 years old when that happened. So then the other, much more interesting story, and it's a testament to Paul Bear Bryant and his staff was my grandfather who at the time was a high ranking police officer captain at the Jasper Alabama at the police department. He decides one day to come pick me up and take me. He said, we're going to Tuscaloosa to meet Bear Bryant. Being a little kid, I was 7 or 8 at this time. I thought, okay, sure. My granddad was like John Wayne to me. He'll get whatever done. So we go there. Go into the his office before his office, the secretary. And my grandfather tells his credentials and the police department, back then, police credentials, I guess we'll get you a long way. Today, I'm sure you couldn't get to Nick Saban's secretary. But I digress. But my grandfather says we're here he pointing to me, said he wants to meet Bear Bryant. Of course, my grandfather equally wanted to meet him. And she goes, oh my goodness, I'm so sorry. You just missed him by like 5 or ten minutes because spring football practice had just started. So they just walked out on the field to start spring practice. And so if you'll leave his name and address here, I'll have mister Brian signed a picture and mailed to him. And even as a little kid, I thought Paul Bear Bryant is not going to get around to autographing and send him a little kid in Mississippi, a picture. And then she allows she said, would you like to tour the office? And we go in there into this day, that's one of the most surreal moments is being in Bear Bryant's office and just being able to look around. It's very neat, very neat experience. For the fast forward about two weeks and I'm checking the mail in Mississippi, a little 8 and a half by 11 envelope from university of Tuscaloosa, open it up. There's an autographed picture, says two clay, best regards Paul Bear Bryant. And I just thought and to this day still think that even as a kid, I thought, that is so very neat that someone of his stature took the time to sit down and autograph and send, et cetera picture to a young fan. That is such an extraordinary story, but you're right, because I was I used to roam around that athletic department and there wasn't I mean, yeah, if they saw a stranger they might be alert, but you could walk right in and that is an amazing story. I can't thank you enough for sharing that. That is truly remarkable. Just to think about how different things were and how collegial he was in cordial. Yes. Yes, I appreciate you listening, Paul and I agree a 100%. Nothing like that could happen today. I'm just blessed that I was in the right place at the right time..

"Was before anything was on television. And that would have been 1950s. Kentucky has had some teams in the late 70s that were really elite. They've had one great year with J claiborne, what 84? But I mean, I just don't remember and, you know, I'll be in full disclosure. This is not a great weekend in college football. But it's still a one versus 11 matchup. Yeah. That's worth paying attention. And honestly, I think Kentucky because her when they're talking about because you schedule a home come a weekend, whatever. I think they're 11 because they're Kentucky. Yeah. I think if they weren't Kentucky, they would be 7 or 8. But they hire. But because they're Kentucky, and there's always that. It's not fair. I mean, think about it. They beaten LA shoe in Florida. That should get you like fourth in the country. And in a normal year, and you're 6 O and a year where everyone in the top ten is losing games. Everyone in the top 20 files losing games. But there's still that. This should be one versus 5. Yeah, I'm all for that. So to answer your question, when was the last time they played in the biggest game of the weekend? The answer is never. Yeah. Certainly not in the television era. I'm going to call coach Bryant's son and ask him if he remembers. What happened in the 30s? Yeah. Because there was the beat Oklahoma, it was a historian. Imagine though for a second, so Bear Bryant is coaching at Kentucky. If you want more, go to the library. He defeats Oklahoma. Can we just keep talking about this during the break? Do we decimal system?.

"For the golden cap award and I'm just content to wait and play the game and see what happens. In the meantime, if you will permit me, be plagiarized, rod surley, please. Let is on a journey. His final destination, The Twilight Zone. That was a great show. I used to love that lead in. Thank you, pat. Appreciate it. It is certainly chaos tonight. Let's talk to Travis in Texas. Hey, Travis. Hey, Paul, my dad starting taking me to a and M games at Kyle field in 1956 when Bear Bryant was our head coach and I've been going out there for 65 years and seeing most of the games also played the game in high school and college. So I know a little bit about football. And I want to make this next statement with great emphasis and your caller before the last caller should listen. As well as legend, Bama did not lose that football game to Texas a and M, Texas a and M beat Alabama. And Alabama has got some problems on defense. And that's that problem is not going away. It was very evident at football game, Paul, and I have attended the last two games at Kyle field. The one before Bama was Mississippi state and they beat us. And I watched Bama lose to us and I'll tell you you're looking at those two teams. If they both play as well as they did the day they played us, bamo will lose to Mississippi state. I'm going to make that prediction right now. Bama is going to lose to Mississippi state Saturday. So that's my prediction, Paul. Well, thank you. If that happens, I don't know if we'll have enough time Monday to let legend call in. We'll take a break. We still have 30 minutes remaining. We appreciate you being here. It's been a fun show. We.

"All gas, no brakes. Let's Gol No, You sound like a totally objective party. Beat us. Yeah. Let's talk a little more about the game and about saving his legacy here. I mean, it looked for a quarter, maybe a quarter and a half like we had a contest. Maybe a quarter on our hands here, But, yeah, I mean, Alabama's there too good there too good. And you know what? It should come as a surprise to nobody. In this college football season, you know, playing amidst a pandemic that the Knicks saving team because Nick Saban and you know his attention to detail do your job. You know he's the best at that. And so, yeah, it just makes too much sense that this year where there's a higher degree of difficulty to get the product on the field that his team would be the only one left standing at the end, right. I mean, it just does. He spoke on that last night in that press conference, too, about the challenges about you know how they really became family. Not only did they appreciate the Their actual family time when they had to be quarantined or whatever. But everyone on that team had bought into those challenges. We heard, you know, the former coach of the long words, talk about that throughout the year. Obviously, they did. They had a better winning season and everything more incentive to do so, but just the way that his demeanor the way that he carries on interview And the juxtaposition of highest can see him go. Hey, I'm on the sidelines, too. To me. He might be the greatest that in my lifetime so far and like you said, college coaching. I don't even think there's a question now currently has Mork Nazis than all other active coaches combined. I mean, that's not it's mind boggling seven National Champions championships, He officially breaks the tie with it with Bear Bryant there Um The conversation started. And of course this is what do you know what you do is this Alabama team? Mack Jones said afterwards that quote I think we're the best team to ever play in quote. Now we said exactly that of the L s u team a year ago because of the unbelievable offensive explosion that they had displayed. I actually probably like if you put Ellis you a year ago against this Alabama team, I think I'd make Ellis you a favor just because of the amount of weapons on that team. But I don't even I mean, I don't know it. Is this the best team ever to play? You know, I'm sorry, but it was 2005 what they were. Oh, that. Is that still the best team ever to play? Well, yes. If you're asking me to talk through my burnt orange nous right now, give me the Y. But, dude, I think when it comes to that l s u team last year or two. The Alabama team who beat a novice hapless maybe needed a few more games under its belt this season. Ohio State Buckeyes team. This still doesn't take away from the greatness of the Alabama team. They have all the right to say that Look what Mac did with his wide receiver, the running back all the touchdowns and yards that those three put together this season, is it? I don't know, because we are in a weird shortened like nobody got the best. Did they? I know Alabama played almost a full schedule minus their nonconference. Well, they they finished 13, You know, So I guess in a normal season to win the national championship, it would be 15 games for Alabama. Missed out on the nonconference. Yeah, In fact, that is the beat 13 Power five opponents this year, which I'm almost positive has never happened before. In the history of the game. There's of data that could suggest you could have that argument. I'm just not ready to die on a hill for a team this year for that argument. Let me ask you this, uh, 66 titles and 12 years of Alabama for for next statement, because the freaking Okay the first one. I was therefore versus Coleman. Going? The Longhorns eyes it is this bad for college football. The fact that Alabama you know, basically every other year is going to be there to win it. I'll tell you it's bad for college football, and we're up against it. So if you want to continue this I'd love to. Because I'm on your side now, you said months and months ago, maybe now that you loved the BCS because they usually got it right. I think having this four Kind of not much rotation.

Former Alabama coach Bear Bryant with a speech to freshman many, many years ago, they got another title down in Tuscaloosa. And might be in a position to win two or three more. Bama head coach next seven, picks up his six title in Tuscaloosa, seventh all time and surpasses legendary Tide coach Paul Bear Bryant. I think coach Brian has, you know, sort of in a class of his own in terms of what he was able to accomplish what his record is, and I mean, he's the one that made Alabama and the tradition of Alabama a place where lots of players wanted to come say they've got some all time performances from his offense, including Heisman winning wide receiver Devante Smith, who said a championship game record with 12 catches Go along with 215 yards and three touchdowns, and he did it all in the first half, because you'd injure his hand early in the second half and be done for the night. "I mean, he really isn't a sporting sense as worthy of celebration as LeBron as Tom Brady as Tiger Woods as any of these Michael Jordan. He is not only on. I think it's not even a question today. The best, the most successful the most impressive college. Football coach, College football coach in the history of sport, I'm not sure the people appreciate where he did it and the obsessiveness with which Alabama used to hold bear Bryant in a regard that was unhealthy now saving it certainly made his own mark, but I can remember after saving left in disgrace is strong, I suppose, but Certainly left under the lesson. Successful terms with which he departed the Miami Dolphins. The NFL went to went down the Tuscan moves to spend some time with him. Interesting guy like the guy was not a very friendly guy, but but who cares? And out his window was a was literally the Bear Bryant Museum. This guy's got his own museum in Tuscaloosa, and it's cool by the way, but it's not like you know, you go to some museums like I'm driving across the country. I'm from Iowa coming to stop it, though. I don't know the pancake museum, and it's basically a closet in somebody's house. That's disguise the tourist up. This is an actual, shiny, beautiful memorial immortalizing Bear Bryant. Nick Stevens office, his windows huge window. Look down on it. A reminder of what he had to pass. And he's done it. He's surpassed that he is in the most competitive air in the history of sports. The most competitive era in the history of college sports dominated now, I'm not gonna be the Alabama coach. I shouldn't even have to comment on this. I think I've said this over and over and over again, Like many successful men also full of crap, Azaz Dag liar. Like saving so much. He? It is a given right and it will be a given. Alabama is going to destroy Notre Dame tomorrow. They're going to destroy the fine Arish. Did I hear that Alex is in Notre Dame fan. So sorry Thursday, they're gonna and I think London's gonna gonna own a house date. But there's just not enough information there for me to be that sure of it, and we'll see what happens Clubs in against Bama, but just I'm trying to appreciate as 2020 coming to a close. Some of the greatness out there. That's really easy to take for granted. And I'm not a big Tom Brady fan. Look is that I think is the best QB of all time and clearly was important ingredient to success with the New England Patriots, and I find him to be a bit of how do I put this? Scott's out really hard. Just an off. Putting weirdo. I guess like away from football is that is that he is, But whatever, who cares? He's amazing the guy's 43. He can still throw the ball down the field and competed a remarkable level. I'm trying to appreciate what he's about in this playoff run, and Nick's even maybe I'm thinking about this because I was just thinking about saving and just how ridiculously successful he's been. Element, and I know the dabble Bill Clinton from nothing from scratch. I'm not sleeping on that He's earlier in his journey. I got it when everyone's Alabama that was that really toxic combination in college football, in particular of absolute expectation because of the history What a very competitive environment Now you could make the case and it's a It's an accurate one that it might be easier to succeed in the SEC. If you're remarkably talented, like saving is because guys want to play in the SEC. But you can look at careers that have been destroyed, shipwrecked by and really just the joy of football fans shipwrecked by the past and the inability for that to be a reality now looking and I'm from the Midwest, so I'll go there looking Nebraska football. The way in which they hold themselves in higher regard compared to what they're able actually able to do. Look at Michigan football. I don't know if Jim Harbaugh's gonna get extended or he's gonna move on or what's gonna happen, But he's clearly incapable literally. He's literally incapable of being Ohio State, and I don't have to live in front of me. But I'm pretty sure that is technically, therefore, impossibility within a championship. If you can't be the Buckeyes as a Michigan football coach, how that clone to get a life, and here's the deal like Is there a better Is there a better option? In Michigan. Been horrible. I don't know if there is and if there's not, there is not a solution. There's not a return to that level of greatness. It's not easy Look at Texas, Texas should be what clubs in an Alabama Ohio state are almost every year. They should perennially be in the in the hunt and in the competition for a national championship. Because there is so much football town, the state of Texas and at least until Texas squandered it every literally every kid 99 out of 100 kids. 991 of 1000 Kids have played football in Texas. High school wanted to play football at the University of Texas. It's easier said than done, and that that say they went into a position like that, in a state that does not Alabama's that overwhelmed by by football high school football town. There's kids can play there, but you wouldn't Alabama you have to recruit nationally. You wanna win at Texas? If you're a great coach, you can recruit Texas. And once you recruit Texas successfully, you will recruit the nation. That's the frustrating thing I know. For USC fans and U C L. A fans who consider themselves capable of being the same position. There's a lot of football talent in California. You win California recruiting and win some games you'll recruit nationally we've seen in the past. Same thing. Exact same thing is true in Florida. Saving with the Alabama and he did it and again we take us for granted. Year after year. His team is the favorite to be a national champion or the second favorite. After whatever their teams out there, it's a hell of a thing. Hell of an accomplishment. It's one of the reasons I'm glad cultural got some kind of play off going. "You. And he was right. Coming out How you're gonna have £250 behind a piece of bamboo. Lordy Mercy die. I'm kind of scared me and I said What? What should I do? He said, You better get up there to those teachers. And you better apologize. You better get your grades up, son. You got one semester left. And he said it all depends on what you do this last semester. Well, I went to my teachers. And I said, I'm sorry. You know, I know I clowned around. I didn't pay attention. But If you'll help me. I'll pull my grades up and you want to know what every one of those teachers were, in fact willing to help me. As a matter of fact, eventually Later in life. I met and married a phenomenal teacher, and we've been married quite a while since that time. But they helped me my grade got back up where they should have been. And that's when another school who came to me. A school you might be familiar with. It was called the University of Alabama. They had a great coach named Paul Bear Bryant. And they said, If you can take that entrance test and pass it, we will give you four year scholarship to come play football for us. Well, I went down re took the tests and Lo and behold, I passed. I was accepted to the University of Alabama is a freshman football player. In 1964. That was a long time ago before you might have even have been a figment of your grandmother's imagination. I don't know. But there I was on a great football team with players like Joe Nemeth, Broadway, Joe And other celebrities on the great Bear Bryant being the head coach. I I will tell you it was a tough time. Bear. Bryant was a fair man, but he was an extremely tough man. And if you've ever seen the movie Junction Boys, you may understand what I'm talking about. It's not Like it is today. I mean, today they give you water when you get hot on the practice field. In those days. No water. If you wanted water, he had to ring the sweat out of your jersey and drink.

"In well he is in the hall of fame also I believe the hockey hall of fame after what okay bear Bryant favor pro athletes your favorite pro athletes grow play not he Patrick what you play goalie I started playing it in last long by the way to get to the goalie fight the other night resemblance between the Calgary flames of mahjong good file or while verses man one of the goalies was getting one of the goalies was getting I thought that he got cheap shot got kind of tripped into didn't do you know I don't think it was a cheap shot goalie took offense to it the other goalies Katie out to center ice and just stood there waiting and lonely hell that other goalie rolled up on him and they drop the helmets the gloves the whole yard to win at it well Vernon was the other one by the way while Vernon or why oz good couple good goalie fights not quite those but good it was still good it was it was still pretty good so big phallic looking at this the trade deadline for the Denver Nuggets coming up on Thursday at one o'clock man I I do think they make some sort of a move to improve the team I don't think they need to I think give Michael Porter join your comes along you know what I was love to see because this be for right now is going on in Memphis is is is epic with Andre Iguodala he says he's going to sit out the entire rest of the year if he doesn't get traded yeah I mean but that's a guy that can never be a Denver nugget again because this was a guy that right before you left Denver no went over and told the Golden State Warriors that George Karl was saying hit those guys and you know don't let him get free looks and hit him and I felt so I'm I was like damn bro you you you know it and then and then he goes and joins that teen all right but he would be such an addition to this team from his experience in championships and his play but there's no way in the world the nuggets could ever have Andre Iguodala back here plan for them now and I can tell that I mean he he just he left the left the nuggets high and dry wall like John it's it's not that he left them high and dry but he just came out and was in no you went over and told the the no mark Jackson I think was the head coach data yet mark Jackson was there because my man that wasn't me that that's what George Karl said to do and I was like damn thank you just sold your team out in your head coach out on the way out the door and then the next year you over the plan with him so anyway I I've done it'll be nice to add that kind of better leadership going into the playoffs because that's what you need to win you need better and and we're getting that veteran presence but the thing that I know and the reason I say this the neck that I'm thinkin is that when we trade for somebody it's going to be on a deal that's going to be less than a year and a half okay it'll probably be a deal that's probably going to be an expiring deal this year you know maybe it may be a deal for a guy like JJ Redick is out there but what we would have to give up to get that guy to come here and be happy I think is just way too much so it's going to be this team what we have is what we have and what we have is pretty good almost twenty games above five hundred right now in that win against the Milwaukee Bucks man in Milwaukee yeah I mean they're the number one team in the Eastern Conference set is a big big no one box forty two and threatening RIP such face kind of in your face moment for us to do that sort hand it man you got to be kidding me and that by the way was up we are now blind squirrel finding in that when he picked again on on on our you know when you when you when you're playing big gains right when teams know that their plan big games the attention to detail ratchet up right so you can ratchet it up for the Milwaukee Bucks but cannot on two days rest do the same thing for the Detroit Pistons well look my only concern is when you look at the Western Conference and you look at the two teams that are ahead of the Denver Nuggets there the both LA teams both the clippers and the Lakers both teams that made a big big offseason moves with free agents when you look at the additions that the clippers have made and with the additions that the Lakers have made the Denver Nuggets have help Pat pretty much I mean any Millsap was allies big move that the Denver Nuggets and I think that's the way that we will continue I think that's the way that we will continue will have to build and develop from within it's gonna be so hard to track top free agents here to Denver I think that's just going to be the way it is and if you trade for somebody you just know you got it for half a season and you just got to get what you can out of him I mean seeing how Chris Paul is planned in in in Oklahoma City Hey bro that would have been a great addition to the same but what are you going to I mean don't take Jamal Murray out me what it was about but that's the kind of player this transformative player that can move your franchise that extra mile that extra bed that extra step to get to what you need to go I mean what do you need one guy like you need one more guy like that you need a guy like that not seeing that he has to be in his prime but boy a wealth of experience goes a long way when getting ready for the playoffs no and and that's one of the reasons you know that you know just going back to the Superbowl one of the reasons that I like the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Superbowl because they will one play away from being in the Superbowl last year they were a drive away from getting the ball back at me a coin tiles Tom Brady takes the ball goes down the field and score the win the game trust me if the coin toss what went the other way you can see the taste of the bald eagle down the field and they score that experience that you just bought from last year feels that excitement in that in in that tank is full of experience the next time you see that kind of moment so every time that we take one more step in the playoffs like we did last year that's a good thing for this team is sooner or later somebody's going to have to look over here and say you know what man the nuggets are doing it the right way they play a fun brand of basketball and I'm gonna take the leap of faith I don't know when that happens but it but if things keep going the way that they're going in and I wasn't a huge Michael Malone fan because I believe that he coaches his team into victories rather than the team taking the victories on themselves and I want the team the own all the big games I want to own all the moments in their young team and I think they're grown into it and I think he's done a good job of releasing some of that has your back to the team but I don I just know I just know that for us to do the things that we have to do it's gotta be guys I Jamal Murray stepping up in joker's stepping up you know a gear hairs stepping up in B. and special ed and a nose guard the special Dan everything is going to work you know it and then that's what I want all right we will get to our poll question when we come back on the other side and of course our techs line is always open to five six six nine oh it's big Alan Jo Jo this is K. away the voice of.

Proposed federal law seeks to limit skyrocketing salaries of college coaches

"Well anyway. I I call one of your stories. He's just week. We're talking about salaries and congress trying to put a cap on things and you. Did I think a an amazing. I don't know how you doug all this up. A deep dive live into the evolution of coaching salaries. Take us through that process. Yeah I one of the one of the most interesting thing about college. Football is how in twenty twenty I guess in our in our myopic nature point twenty we think that we all have these like little arguments novel discussion Russia. We've been doing this thing for one hundred fifty years at this point in time there are quite a bit of things that just are not new and some of that is complaining about too many bowl games but another one of those things is talking about how coaching salaries are way too high. I mean it's it's it has quite literally almost almost always been like this. I mean Amos Alonzo Stagg at Chicago making six thousand dollars in eighteen eighteen ninety two now I went back and use the consumer price report and price some of these salaries out in you know twenty eighteen at the time buying power. And you know. That's six thousand dollars. Amazon does stag was making then was worth like a hundred and sixty thousand dollars back in eighteen. Ninety two there has always been this separation between what highly paid college. Football coaches made Versus what the Common Man Colombian mix. You know I'll I'll bring it to your audience and hit them home like bear Bryant when he's doing. Brian show that that famous Sunday highlight show That that became formative so formative for a lot of Alabama fans. He wasn't doing that just out of the good report he was because he was getting paid there Bryan getting in pay. That's why I thought he. I thought you said he was a benevolent. So I believe you remember this because you weren't born but he also had to Eat the potato chips and drink cocoa which by the way had bourbon in it. Yes absolutely I mean like bear. Bryant was Bear Bryant was cheering the back right now. Yeah so I find it amazing we we. We had a professor on earlier who who was very much a part of the Donna? Shalala Team Wanting to limit coaching Ching salaries so When did they make the big turn? When did they start going? I mean as as some of the critics say out of control to me. It really doesn't matter what any of these guys make but TAKE A. When was the big turn? I think they really and truly exploded in the nineteen eighties because in the nineteen eighties. That's when that Supreme Court hate happened with like Georgia Oklahoma and you know they got. TV rights You know they divorced the TV rights from the NCAA and schools colleges then became able to go. She ate television rights As entertaining defended themselves. Obviously than we get into the CFO era and BCS. And what we have now where the SEC. Disperse what was it. Six hundred and fifty some odd the million dollars yesterday give or take a few million yeah To all fourteen member schools. I mean look. The bedrock of this cannot be overstated. The bedrock bedrock of this is this when you as an Athletic Department at Florida Alabama at Lsu is Florida state when you do not have to pay your labor force when you do not have to compensate you or athletes. That money has to go somewhere now. That money goes to beyond coaching salaries. I mean that's the facilities race that is everything. Everything that makes these college will programs at opulent as they can be obviously a really really big part of the PIE now. Is Coaching salaries. Now Coaching coaching salaries the early eighties. That's stuff starts to get reported. That's my really really starts coming into Coming into the sport in a way that it had really really before that By the time you get through the mid nineties Florida's paying Steve Spurrier the one of the first billion dollar contracts so that he doesn't jump to the NFL at that time honestly the NFL itself explodes. You've got that competition. So it's it's the competition that that spurs in any industry the street Salaries and money and will lose those things but the early eighties. I think is where we can really pinpoint when college athletics kind of started growing up from a from a fiscal standpoint talking to Richard Johnson from a better society in now we all know what is going on. I'm interested where were you. Were you sit on this. Because the the so called Donna. Shalala proposal We heard Professor Ridpath on this would would curtail a lot of things I find find. It somewhat amusing chancellors and presidents at Private Schools More so than public schools making. I'm five six million dollars a year We have an offensive and defensive coordinator is making major seven figure salaries I know is a highly paid journalists. Where we're we're are you on what Shola is is attempting to to do at least down one lane in Congress right. I think you have a good point. the the facilities boom and the salary boom of coaches collect directors and the things that we coach Sports Mirror. That of what we see on the institutional side at a lot of these verses and I think that is one thing thing that really gets lost you know like you said like g Foreign President of like West Virginia. Like these guys make guys and girls make six figures seven figures. There is a lot of money in higher education in the United States at the highest levels. college athletics is it is not an outlander But like studies have shown time and time again going back thirty forty fifty years that when your football all team is good when your basketball team is good It becomes you know they always say that is the front porch of the university. Admissions skyrocket when athletics. Do well and that is. Why a lot of these University of course than anything else I think? Put Up with and we'll pay out the nose for Nick Sabin or Jim Harbaugh or a Davos. We or whatever I think the dirty secret is is the weight from Ro a lot of these endowments in some of these very popular. Schools would shrink a lot more than people wanNA realize. No I mean just look around. I mean boone pickens. She died recently. I mean the the amount of money that he put into Oklahoma state and I don't I don't mean to disparage Oklahoma state in stillwater Oklahoma. Oh my been there. And if you haven't Richard Make sure that you put that on your bucket list. Wouldn't it wouldn't have had that type of money And and a lot of these Jerry Jones. He's given to the University of Arkansas. You can go down the list And I mean and it's because of one thing we're trying to win in in in college football or basketball depending on on on where you live and what part of the country you're in. Yeah absolutely I saw a stew. MANDL's works in the for pretty athletic. He He has a college pat column and somebody asked him Ten million dollars. What would you do with it to build a staff? And I look the question and I was like look man if you WANNA compete with Alabama Lsu Clemson Oklahoma Ohio state. You need more your salary. You Pool has to be bigger than ten million dollars. I mean on on its face. You'RE GONNA have to pay a coach at that level. Five five and a half six six billion dollars. You'RE GONNA have to pay your coordinators eight hundred nine hundred thousand dollars because Dave Aranda was was pulling such a salaried Lsu a few atmosphere necessarily because he was such town defensive coordinator which he is but it was because one opinions coordinator so that the only job job they'll leave for is a G. Five or or power five kids coaching job. It's got bulletproof coordinators. I WANNA lose them. I don't want to take collateral. If they leave me they gotta take step up so okay. You're paying both your coordinators Like one point eight billion dollars between the two. That's like eight million dollars. Just gone to the head coach in coordinators. Now you're in another like five million dollars higher director staff your eight assistant coaches which is all right. That's your ten assistant coaches You want to compete with Georgia Alabama. All right we'll have a party because you have to fill out the rest of those staffs with analysts. We assist tense You know you gotTa have a staff of three saw guys kind of the shadow. Coaching staff that that Alabama kind of those famous or infamous. No matter how how are depending on which by the fence you went on but You know it takes money to keep up with the Joneses and it takes a lot of line really want we national championship. Always great to have you on Richard other than chicken. What's the what's the second most favorite food that you'll be serving the super bowl party Sunday lady a friend is bringing some guacamole? She'll be homemade guacamole. I'm not a big block fan but you know you know how this you gotta try say like it. So that'll that'll it'll be my My side dish. I cannot wait I if I'm in the neighborhood I'll just drop Bil- bring some bring bring a some some fruit cake leftover from Christmas. I couldn't give away Gringa fruitcake. Brings some cold ones man. I'll have seat for you right on the couch next to meatball. Thank you great. Great to talk to you again come back soon. Have you

"Welcome back this sporting life these days when you talk about college football in its history we're talking about a lot now the one hundred fiftieth anniversary season of college football to the names always come up of course Paul Bryant and exceeded who each have won six national titles of course bear Bryant won't win the seventies long gun died shortly after coaching his last game at Alabama almost forty years ago but nixie been so very much a part of the conversation and those two coaches are the subject of a new book by our old friend the very gifted writer Larz Anderson his newest is chasing the bear how bear prided Nick say been made Alabama the greatest college football program of all time and it is a pleasure to welcome to the show he's a frequent guest on find them of course as well the one and only large Sanderson large thank you for being with us Jeremy it's so good to be back with you thanks for having me Lars you know it seems like this is obviously a natural fit for you you've read so much about Alabama in the last several decades so much about the college game in general how did you decide to to to write this book in this way comparing and contrasting emphasizing the similarities between arguably the two greatest college football coaches of all time two thousand seven mixtape in arrived in Alabama and I had moved to Alabama from New York City what I've lived for fifteen years shortly before say bin and I cover college football for Sports Illustrated among other sports and I wrote several stories on next including cover stories I wrote a book called the storm in the tight about the impact of the tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa in April twenty eleven and and the impact that had on on the town the teen and especially say then and so as Nick was getting closer to winning six national championship inclined bear Bryant the I really became. I'm interested and perhaps pursuing a dual biography of the two coaches and what I do is try to present it in a way where their side by side the the connective tissue the connective DNA between the two really is is bear Bryant grants on great grandson Paul Tyson who Nick recruited and and is now on the team and that is sort of the opening scene of the opening scene of the book is is the the grandson of bear Bryant and the funeral procession three hundred cars going from Tuscaloosa to Elmwood cemetery in Birmingham and getting all the way to sort of Paul Tyson stepping on campus but from there I examine bear Bryant as he has in his car in his Cadillac with his wife at its side is dog in the backseat and his young son in the backseat rolling in because the loose in nineteen fifty eight in trying to capture in real time his hopes and fears and dreams and what his plans are for building Alabama into a winner next chapter begins with Nick saved in in the back of a private jet with Alabama athletic director mal Moore. leaving South Florida some dolphins fans is a fleeing South Florida but but leaving South Florida on the back of Jack in the back of the jet and and and and creating again in real time what saved in hopes and dreams and fears were and how he was gonna rebuild Alabama and from there the narrative toggles back and forth between Bryant trying to build a winner saving trying to build a winner Brian when his first national championship say been winning its first national championship in Alabama and by putting them side by side you really see the the similarities between the two and they're much more profound than the differences are personalities are totally different but the the similarities are so striking they both grew up in rural areas both knew the value of hard work from a very young age Paul Bryant he tended mules that is formed tended to the mules as forget about three thirty in the morning make sure the mules and and the other animals had add water and food for the day by the time he would get to school he would just be covered in dirt and sweaty and by his own admission he didn't smell well as the other kids made fun of him and that he developed a deep inferiority complex and he was able to sort of extinguish that feeling once he stepped on to the football field to do so much bigger than everyone else and per se any use football as a means to improve his own life and that would be a scene that you would you would share with recruits when you would bring them into Tuscaloosa certain brain going to their homes and he was able to relate to recruits on and and their families at a very sort of basic profound level and saving grew up in rural West Virginia at age eleven or twelve began working as bad service station and pumping gas doing grease jobs cleaning windshields and his dad this demanded that everything be done to a quote standard of excellence and that meant all the wings. deals when by the time that he was done wash knows when she'll every every every millimeter of that we still had to be free of debris in any sort of any sort of clutter on that windshield and today you hear saving dues that grace standard of excellence more than any other and he he repeats words that he learned from his father and both in both David and Brian to both lost their dad at age forty six and I think that infused in both of them a sort of sense of urgency to get things done in their life at a relatively young age it made them very driven because they knew from a very young age is how vulnerable and fragile fragile life is and you know both of them the the the shadow of their fathers is still with them very much and especially with Nick whenever he talks about his dad in a in a press conference or to a reporter you really should pay attention because he's saying something very profound usual speed you would Larz Anderson about his new book chasing the bear how bear Bryant Nick saving made Alabama the greatest college football program of all time but as you were just hearing it's also book really about these two remarkable man who made such a huge impressions upon college football the history of the game each having won six national titles and counting for Nick save in but you mentioned how different their personalities are large because when I think of the two I never knew bear Bryant of course like everyone else follow sports I grew up hearing stories about him the the larger than life personality the the way that people Howard in his presence nixie been of a different physical presence a different kind of personality I wouldn't necessarily think of them as you said they are dissimilar in that respect as big as Brian's personality was how do you describe the more technocratic see. I think Nick he comes off as distant and often dis interested in social settings you know he will be looking at his watch should be sitting down at the captain is right but looking like a man who has places to go and and people to meet and he's not great in in in group dynamics of you know it is not great at making those inter personal connections and and it more as Brian you know he you know and I got this from Bruce Arians the head coach at Tampa Bay I I wrote a book with. Ariens out even thank you Bruce was on Bryant's final staff at Alabama and and and be a always marveled that that Bryant new the biography of of everyone in the building from the secretary to the people cutting the grass and if someone is having a bad day he would go and you just have those magic words to brighten their day and by the way speaking of a of a towering presence it's been written many times that John F. Kennedy when he met Bryant give this one a few times in his life he was actually nervous before meeting a person but with with that which saved in you know in talking to assistance of work for him before Jim McIlvaine comes to mind Jim was as offense of coordinator for several seasons and I went on to become the coach of Florida and not going said and all this time with coach save and they only had one conversation that wasn't about football I would say then it's all about business you know these days are so structured every minute of every hour is planned he's before by far the most prepared person not just coach but prepared person I've ever met in my life very few things surprised him you know I don't think he was surprised at what happened in the national championship game against Clemson I think that's why you saw him on the sideline being and being someone looking accepting of it is it as if he saw this freight train coming at him and and he had sort of spoken in metaphor about the problems that that team last year was having and so but when saving goes into a what makes saving what distinguishes him as a recruiter is he is able to make connections with the family because he is so prepared Alabama does what's called a seven deep dive on every every perk for prospective recruit and it's almost it within that means that they talked to sort of every person who touches that recruits life before state and walks into the living room so they'll have. prepared a and F. B. I. like dossier on that yet then and on on the family Ann and say if the if the mother has an interior designer stable brush up on interior design and content with the intelligence on on the curtain rods you know it is really stunning the the vast nous of Alabama's recruiting operation in the amount of almost intelligence that they gather before they actually make the visit and is so impressive and saving and and Brian I think have a unique ability to make young kids feel like they're the most important person in the world in that moment when they are giving them the recruiting pitch next.

"Of the funniest and they were as big a part of Alabama football as big Al and and bear Bryant actually after bear Bryant passed away. I mean, they were Alabama football. At least for my fans standpoint. Now. One of those guys was it. Was it Troy I think it was was at Troy that worked for the DA's office. Hey, retired as a county sheriff, and then and then finished out and I retired and the DA's office for years on. He talk to him. I don't know a couple of months ago, he did his normal. How do you? How do you get to Auburn routine, which is pretty funny? But but now those guys were I mean, I I've seen them signing autographs taking pictures. I mean, they there was hardly an Alabama game in the in the eighties nineties when you didn't see them at least one shot of them in the stands. Yes, sir. Kept going every game manager if I will die. But I just want to sit down my family. I didn't know where he had heard it there. I was I was literally on a plane yesterday morning and somebody sent me that in in the course of the day. I lost track of of the story. But, but I am indebted to you for bringing it up again because everyone that follows Alabama knows these guys, and so terribly sorry to hear about Troy. Thank you very much for sharing that. Yes. Right. Alison. I love your show. Thank you. Great to hear from. Hacksaw real really really nice and get a call. Let let us talk to. RT up next. Hey RT. Good afternoon. Welcome to the show. Hey, paul. I'm just wondering how this just in feels can just transfer start play the next year. And I said I'll well. Let me try to explain it. He hired. He there was an incident which you may or may not have heard about that occurred, and it helped open up some some room with some NC double A legislation which I I would I would lean on someone else to try to explain, but he had a lawyer, and they they they tried to to get her to use this clause to allow him to be eligible, and they were successful. I guess the clause they need to close. Well. No, the lawyer to get it closed and nothing about Jalen hurts. Yeah. Here's a good quarterback. And he coulda had a rain. But county via was supposed to be watching the guy count style. That's it. Thank you. Great to from good to hear good stuff. Matt Galveston, Texas mad, you're on the show. Go right ahead. I guess you saw that big game. Bob stoops is back in coaching this time in the I did I I missed that story yesterday in my traveling. But I I heard about it last night when I got home and good for Bob, nothing like retirement that lasts a year and a half. I think that the placeholder for Jerry Jones, founded wise is up whatever big which is Jason Garrett is not the guy to be the coach of the Cowboys as is painfully obvious from the way the Rams Sean McVeigh coach to the Dallas staff. Now, listen anyone who thinks? Jury's going to keep. Jason is fooling themselves. He did a little bit better this year than expected, but that's not going to happen. And I think Bob is there there, by the way, there's a precedent is, you know, for Jerry to hire former Oklahoma coaches. He brought in Barry Switzer in in one a Super Bowl, although idea with all due respect to Barry. I think I could have won a Super Bowl with that team. Troy Aikman surprise as you. Remember? Choice. Started it Oklahoma. That's right. Transferred to UCLA the Jerry brings in berry..

He hired. "I've always had an appreciation for life. I mean. Growing up the way I did growing up in this business the way I did you have an appreciation for each day of the job. You have an appreciation for life in general. So it never was anything about that. But the human element of things from the standpoint of making sure people know how you feel about him because I know when I was laying there in the hospital people let me know how what I'm into them. And I just wanna make sure always do that. In return, a hook up the rights and take pictures for your two girls on that helicopter. Right. And that I think was what surprised a lot of people that you would think of your family at a time. When literally you could be dying there, and you're taking pictures for your family to see what it's like riding a helicopter for the first time. Yeah. I mean, there's no doubt. I mean, I, you know, soon as I found out I was going on helicopter. I made sure it was okay. We weren't going Don helicopter crash or anything like that. You know, about taking electron IX getting interfered with the camera home phone. But yeah, I mean, it's just I mean, that's exactly what it was. I wanted to make sure they knew that the, you know, my wife would never let us right on a helicopter. So I didn't have choice that day. So I wanted to make sure that they they saw that. I did. And that's where it was you know, and and everybody did a great job brought up playing it ala. Bama. And for those who don't know you played quarterback at Alabama from nineteen ninety three to nineteen Ninety-seven had a pretty prolific career there as well. Who's better quarterback? You're too. Oh to by far. I was just I mean, they won't even let me back in the state. So, but no, they, you know, plant at the university of Alabama was great. It was great for me. This the college experience, you know, that was my goal. I mean, a lot of lot of people's go when they set an individual goal was is to play the National Football League or whatever. Well, my goal was play at the university of Alabama. And I did that I was able to come away with degree because that's something won't ever be able to take away with from me. And you know, that's the that's the things that the heart of the matter that are importing things affect your life. And then turn you can start affecting other people's lives for just being who you are. And you know, how it is in college. You discover who you are as a person, and hopefully you continue to Volve and get better and better and and become a better person. And in the coaching business, you become evolve and. Come a better coach through the years. And that's just what I've tried to do. Just don't ever want to stay the same. We talk about Alabama. We talk about the coaching business giving your choice Nick Sabin or bear Bryant who you taking your head coach..
