"Aren't vaccinated, they get an option just to get tested. So it seems like it's good for everyone all around. Absolutely. And we love, you know, if there's some cool technology out there, we'll probably figure out a way to use it. So we just went through 18 months to the pandemic. What was NetSuite doing really to help their customers get through a difficult time? Well, a lot of it was the same as what we always trying to do, just sort of on steroids. I mean, things were changing really rapidly. And so people just wanted the visibility that they wanted even more. So just trying to make sure, especially for the whole supply chain issue, where people were constantly switching where they were sourcing things from them if they were a product company where they were hiring from if they were a service company and where they might be doing their next projects because if it's on lockdown, maybe the thing got postponed, but in other areas of the country or the world they might so just giving them that visibility so they knew where to buy from and where to sell to make their way through this kind of crooked path through the pen through the pandemic. And what is your prediction about what business is going to be like in the next 6 or 12 months? Do you feel like the economy is coming back? Of course there's some inflation. What's your viewpoint of it? Well, I mean, the signs look pretty good. And I think that with the changes that are happening with vaccination, I'm feeling confident that our customers are going to be able to be more out there and do stuff like this and more in person interactions and that's our hope. I don't have a crystal ball and we got to be prepared for everything and I talked today about the start, stop multi hybrid. I mean, it's everything's going to be different in a lot of different ways. You're going to have to be ready to deliver products where customers want them to deliver services, where and when they want them. And it's going to be changing. I think a lot more rapidly than it has for the foreseeable future. Are you asking your teams to come back to the office or as being an office 5 days a week kind of a thing of the past? Well, certainly initially this is all going to be voluntary and we want to make sure people are comfortable with whatever they're doing. We've obviously gotten really good at working remotely. We're a global organization. We've always had to deal with remote teams and obviously I think a lot of the technology changes have been great. I mean, everybody turns the video on zim now for the most part and you get to see people that you oh, that's what they look like. And it's funny because there are people that have never that came into that suite in the last 18 months and they're just now meeting their manager. Like, oh, you're taller than I thought you were. And so I definitely see the need for people to be in person and it won't be certainly on that same every single day, regular basis that it was. And we're going to have more people that choose to work remotely most of the time, but we're going to have to get teams together because whatever it is, going out to lunch, you know, hanging out at the coffee or whatever. There's definitely stuff that happens there. It doesn't need to be all the time, but it definitely needs to be some amount of time. You talk about this morning in the press event about the great resignation, right? And it's hard to find people. Are you doing something different to make sure you're retaining the folks that you have? Well, you know, it's actually interesting. It cuts both ways. It's actually not been super hard to find people because everybody's like just doing musical chairs. Right. But of course, you want to retain your best talent. It's expensive to train up someone new. And it's great to get new blood. I mean, there's no doubt about it, but the focus on your best people and making sure that they remain engaged and happy and challenged and well compensated for that they feel fair that the compensation is fair. Yeah, that's really important to us. Thinking about how to make NetSuite continue to feel very close knit kind of like it was as a startup is incredibly challenging in the world of remote work, et cetera. So again, another reason that we're really looking forward to getting people together in person and create those relationships and those ties that bind that you maybe can't quite do over Zoom. You know, one of the reasons I think that NetSuite is more important than ever for a lot of small business owners is because of the supply chain issues. I was fortunate enough to try to furnish an entire house during COVID. And I would call some of these retailers and they would say my furniture would be there on Friday and it didn't come and I said, where is it? They go, we have no idea. And like, why don't you? You should have an ERP M system that says where you're at. Is that been a big issue for a lot of your customers and wanting to implement their solution? Absolutely. I talked to Sean and Taliban of mods. I interviewed her on this radio show as well. Yeah. Great story. When you talk to her about that tweet, that's exactly what she hones in on. She's like in the middle of the pandemic. We were shipping product. Changing suppliers. And that's what was the only way we could really see where every order stand stood and kind of where things were. And it's funny because everybody's learning what supply chain means now. It's becoming this kind of general term. I'm sure my children are going to be saying, wait, dad, are those supply chain issues going to prevent our Christmas and Hanukkah presents from coming? So yeah, it was a big driver of engagement with net suite. Unfortunately, we've invested heavily in our supply chain features. We have something called the supply chain control tower, which gives you this high level view of everything that's going on. Among your suppliers, where they might be risks helping you mitigate some of those risks switching to a new supplier if they look like they're providing more reliably that sort of thing. Now what do you hear from your customers do they think the supply chain issues are going to alleviate themselves in 6 months? Certainly not by Christmas, but are we going to solve what you think in 2022? I don't know. Am I gonna buy a new car? That is not what our customers are doing is like figuring out what are their most important products, maybe they do just in case inventory instead of just in time inventory for those. So I think there's still mostly looking at mitigation because no one really, really knows when those boats off of Long Beach harbor are going to get unloaded. Melinda Emerson this morning brought up the idea that the focus on small businesses and the value really are putting an entire solution. And I kept thinking to myself, what's the value of being able to turn your inventory more quickly? Because if you don't know where your inventory is at, or you have to have a lot more, that's costing you money right there. What advice would you have in trying to, I'm trying to convince small business owners that they should migrate more quickly as soon as their business becomes complex from QuickBooks from excel from quicken from some of the sage products. What should we be telling these people? Because they wait way too long. Yeah, I think we've invested really heavily at NetSuite in making it easier to consume NetSuite. And we've done things like build in best practices from the many businesses that we have that probably look a lot like yours. So that we don't have to redo that for you. It's just there and we have something called sweet success that builds in best practices for your industry for your geography for your size company. So I think people that maybe looked at NetSuite in the past will be surprised now and what they'd see in terms of what the total cost of ownership will be, what the price of entry is. And we believe that if you look at the money saved in terms of these sort of manual processes, things falling on the floor, the increased customer satisfaction you have if you can deliver your orders more reliably. And ultimately, this is sort of 360 view of your customer so you can expand the customer lifetime value that we think you'll see that the cost is very, very reasonable. I'm trying to get one of my customers is a $20 million CPG distributor who runs the whole business on excel.

So this is now being played on CNN. The judge presiding over KAR rittenhouse's homicidal homicide trial made a strange and offensive joke inside the courtroom today. I want you to listen to what judge Bruce Schroeder said as the court was preparing to take a lunch break. Let's hope for one o'clock. I don't know if the Asian food isn't coming. It's on his not one of those boats and Long Beach harbor. So he appears to be referring to the supply chain backlogs caused by congestion problems in California ports. "Hiscox business insurance experts This is morning edition from NPR news I'm Rachel Martin Martinez teams along the Southern California coastline are continuing their efforts to clear oil from wetlands damage by the spill It's been a little more than weeks since an underwater pipeline leaked tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Pacific but the impact wildlife could have been worse Fewer birds have been affected because of timing The spill happened just after nesting season and just before migratory birds made their appearance Yesterday I spoke with Michaels at cardi the director of the oiled wildlife care network at UC Davis He's helping rescue birds and other animals and explained the scope of this disaster There was quite a bit of oil out in the environment We have teams covering the entire area from Long Beach harbor all the way down through Carlsbad So that's three different counties Los Angeles orange and San Diego They're reporting not as many birds as they had feared initially but they do say things are getting better every day and the number of live oiled animals that are out there are actually decreasing in numbers What are the other animals that are at risk Basically every species can be negatively affected due to oil exposure So the greatest concern for us are the birds because they're uniquely sensitive to oiling Their feathers keep them warm in an aquatic environment And when oil gets on those feathers it allows cold water to seep next to the skin and for an animal that normally has a body temperature near 106° And has a high metabolic rate They can get cold they can start to waste away and so either die or get very very ill in a matter of days due to that Marine mammals are also at risk usually more chronically though so due to ingestion of the oil Those are animals we're going to be tracking over time though to see if there is an increase in animals that strand And you know one other thing Michael I was thinking about is that one way or another down the food chain the wildlife that you're trying to save relies on plants and smaller life forms to survive Have you been able to gauge it all how they are affected by the spill Yes you're absolutely right Basically oil can affect all levels of the food chain We are trying to rescue and rehabilitate all those upper vertebrate animals at the end of the food chain But plankton invertebrates all different animals can be affected That is something that it's going to take a while to understand Scientists through a natural resource damage assessment process are out there right now collecting samples to come up with an overall estimate an injury determination for the ecosystem as a whole And from that we'll have a much better idea as to the larger impacts throughout that food chain You know when we see the animals on television at least when I see him on television oiled up and suffering it breaks my heart but you're right there I mean you and your organization oiled wildlife care network You're right there with these animals You've got your hands on them Do you ever still get heartbroken or have you done this long enough where it's a job that you have to finish to save these animals Every single day every single spill that I've been on it is a heartbreaking situation Obviously animals don't want to be oiled They're caught in an accident of human cause but really working hard to care for these animals to provide them the necessary rehabilitation the cutting edge technology applying research to them and really trying to do what we can to reverse the anthropogenic damage that occurred to them It is heartbreaking but it's also the most rewarding thing I've ever done when you can get an animal that comes in as heavily coated as you mentioned and actually see them fly off or swim off at the end of the spill There is nothing better than that Michael zucchini the director the oiled wildlife care network Michael thank you very much Well thank you very much It's a historic day today marks the first time indigenous people's day will be observed across this country This year president Joe Biden made it official proclaiming the day of federal holiday shared with Columbus day For doctor Susan faircloth today is much more than just the Monday of a three day weekend It's critically important for me that indigenous people's day not just be treated as a day off Fair cloth is director of the school of education at Colorado state university and she's a member of the coharie tribe of North Carolina For me as an indigenous person the president's proclamation is critically important in that President Biden noted specifically the sovereignty of native nations The proclamation walks a line still acknowledging Columbus day in the contribution of Italian Americans and shaping this country But in a President Biden also recognizes the atrocities committed against native people by Americans of European descent Specifically the proclamation says as follows centuries centuries long campaign of violence displacement assimilation and terror I think that in doing so he speaks to the ability for both of those Those histories and for both of those groups to exist and to be acknowledged simultaneously There are more than 600 different state and federally recognized native tribes across the United States Indigenous peoples day has been recognized for more than three decades but only in 12 states and Washington D.C. Doctor fare class says today offers an opportunity for educators to rethink how they approach American history When we teach about indigenous peoples or Native American peoples we tend to teach about us as being in the past So we tend to be relegated to something that happened hundreds of years ago or decades of go And it creates the appearance that native peoples are no longer here Fairclough says no matter how you decide to mark this holiday It's important to take some time to celebrate the past and present lives of Native Americans We are the original peoples of this land.

"The well-deserved which they treated as their permanent home in sailed for two years around the pacific in sea of cortez in two thousand and four they decided to sell their yacht and set up home in newport harbor to be closer to their grandchildren. Their advertisement of the sale of the yacht was answered in november. Why are these all november. I know by schuyler de leon the power enter schuyler dylan the liliane. The couple was initially cautious of schuyler but became more receptive when he brought his then pregnant wife jennifer and their other child to a meeting. The hawks were last seen alive. On the morning of november fifteenth two thousand four handing out of the harbor so that these are both november things. Right and that's yesterday's the art return but they did not their bodies have still not been found so the investigation gets underway. Here we go. Police started looking into the couple's disappearance and then on november twenty six. Two thousand four attempt was made to access the hawks bank account from mexico. The family was notified and filed a missing person report with the police department. Three days later the police interviewed schuyler. He told him that he had bought the boat from the hawks and showed them proof of purchase documents. He stated to the police that the hawks left in their car with his money. He denied being their car. In named alonzo mccain a former correctional officer that he had met while in jail for burglary as witness to the purchase. This is what. I don't get the reason he bought the boat. He claimed that he was intending to launder money. Related to an armed burglary in two thousand two for which he had been convicted. So he was trying to launder money back to that. So he did the cops. He was laundering. Money in march two thousand and five mccain confessed to the crime and was arrested in connection with the couple's disappearance along with schuyler his wife and another man named john fitzgerald kennedy who was Insane crips gang member in long beach in former youth pastor. He is an ex convict for attempted murder and he was recruited that day to help with the murder. God there was also another former insane. Crips gang member Myron sandra gardner senior. He was also an ex convict of involuntary manslaughter as well and he met Schuyler on the day of his release from prison. Wow he did not participate in the crime but he introduced schuyler to john fitzgerald kennedy. That's how that comes into play while there's moving parts here. Kennedy pleaded not guilty in schuyler initially maintained his innocence as well claiming that he was not present at the time and that the couple were killed over a drug deal gone bad course so the trials authorities alleged that during a c. test in newport beach harbor a few days after meeting the hawks schuyler and the three accomplices but chain gardner and kennedy bound and gagged the couple and threw them overboard..

"Three three seven seven welcome back my first guest tonight has one of the coolest jobs in the world he is the director of content at the mob museum in downtown Las Vegas a Jeff Schumacher is a veteran journalist who reported for the Las Vegas sun then was an editor at Las Vegas city life in the Las Vegas mercury to weekly papers that I wrote for for a while years ago he's been a columnist he's managed the editorial operations of multiple newspapers and is the author of two excellent books about my home town including the newly expanded version about Howard Hughes that we'll be talking about tonight is called Howard Hughes our paranoia and palace intrigue Jeff Schumacher welcome to the program thanks very much for having me George I want to talk about the museum before we get into the book how is that what's happening with the mob museum in light of the virus and all the news that breaking well you know we announced just probably an hour ago that the museum will be closing its public operation starting tomorrow so we're we're joining the the pack of organizations that have decided to you know shut down in the interest of trying to slow the spread of this virus let's let's talk about the museum itself and give it a plug so people who haven't heard about it before will know what's there what's available and how cool your job really is well thanks for thanks for that yes this is a tremendous job basically I am the historian for the mob museum so my my focus is the history of organized crime in America and beyond and you know we get to delve into all the different stories that have everybody's heard about or seen in movies over the last you know a hundred and twenty years and younger so many fascinating figures and some of the fascinating twists and turns and and that's the subject of our museum so people who come to visit the museum this is it's a it's a professional highly professional museum a nationally accredited you know very serious minded as far as being a museum but we're also held a lot of fun and you know you said you're not going to be boarded the mob museum that's for sure thank you keep the current there's always a program about some new development organized crime I mean it's the Italian mob is gone from Las Vegas mostly but organized crime is popped up its head in many different guises well that's absolutely true and you know one of the things we do is that we are a history museum but we also focus on what's happening in the twenty first century and what you see now is really what you would call trans national organized crime right so it's the Mexican drug cartels it's cybercrime is the Russian mafia these kinds of things in which you're seeing all kinds of illegal activity coordinator the legal activity going on across borders across oceans and using technology to the tune of the best advantage well I hope our listeners once the world gets back to normal as soon mean that it does have basic come to lock visit Las Vegas that's a place you got to stop and I know you get a lot of out of town and out of the country visitors every day absolutely you know it's funny we know into in two thousand nineteen we we really set a record for us we had four hundred and ten thousand visitors to the museum over the course of two thousand nineteen and you know the first two months of this year we were just rip roaring I mean we were on a pace to exceed that for twenty twenty but of course now we've seen a little change of plans but expected once you know we do get past the worst of this that they will be able to re open and and people goals of drugs in America let's set transition to Howard Hughes of course he is in a mobster but he has been viewed through a prism of because of his associations with the gangsters who used to own the casinos he bottom out and the perception true or not that he helped clean the bar about a Las Vegas by doing that and I I'd like to start with the from you a general description of how are used as a character you know it you sort of a study in contradictions as you explore in the book and you know there been a lot of books written about it but he's really kind of hard to pin down you know he really is and I think that's what that's what makes him such a great subject four of the research and for book you know even though other books have been written about him what I wanted to do was look at Howard Hughes the the lands of Las Vegas because so much of what he did in the latter part of his life and actually in the middle part of his life had to do with Australia's and and and so anyway as a character you know hard uses as someone who was one of the most famous people of the twentieth century there's no question me as a filmmaker as an aviator who stopped the world record for going traveling around the world in nineteen thirty eight as a as a maker of of airplanes including the spruce goose which flew in Long Beach harbor in nineteen forty seven as a casino owner in Las Vegas who as you noted as been credited with nudging their lease nudging the mob out of Las Vegas getting that whole process started anyway very important and and probably what people known best for his being a recluse right and and being an eccentric in the course of many you know famous and and legendary eccentrics in world history but he's he's got to be right there near the top with some of his you know just those behaviors and and his relationships with people and how he is treated as employees and how he maltreated himself you know and and ultimately with a a really tragic ending to his wife it is it's a sad story ultimately really a sad story when you look at he obviously had some gifs I don't know if you call him a genius but a lot of people have do you well you know I think he he was a genius I I really think when especially that was most evident in the area of aviation I think I think you know when you see what he was accomplishing in the world of aviation in the nineteen thirties and forties without having the proper credentials and he was a layman well basically you know were self taught and he surrounded himself with all these engineers I'm basically they implemented things that he envisioned for example early on I mean he dug retractable landing gear to make your point go faster this was his idea and you know this moving out the rivets on the side of a plane to to make that again make the plane go faster you know he was all in the early days is all about speed and he has set the record for the fastest airplane then he set the record again for traveling around the world and the losing side of the globe and one of the things we just saying about using he didn't just finances things he did on themselves he flew the plane itself when he set the record you didn't hire a particularly good pilot to go ahead and fly his plane the fast as they could ever go he did it himself and I think that's what people really admire about him is he not only was financing these things of the lord in all of the rich man but he was doing it as well I'm it we all have this image of Hughes because what we have learned after his death the what if he was like when he was living in that hotel on the top floor Las Vegas and in isolation that surrounded only by a couple of aids and how weird he got and it and his his reliance on drugs how much is that a factor of the crash is that he had and the pain that he had in later life you know I think I think those crashes had a lot to do with that as a lot to do with what happens later other you know there there is a pretty strong thread of sort of eccentricity if you will going back to when he was the U. S. mother was the term before before he was and I I think he he picked up a lot of those those feelings from her he he definitely had some obsessive compulsive tendencies which we didn't know they didn't call on that at the time nowadays we you know we we know a lot of people have that from what these things really you know made life difficult for in the first place and then in the thirties and then especially in the nineteen forties he was involved in a number of of airplane crashes in the one that really took the cake was in nineteen forty six when he and this is certainly depicted in the movie the aviator but it's absolutely true that he crashed a plane into the Los Angeles Country Club and for all intents and purposes you could have died crash instead he he was taken to the hospital he had massive contusions yet broken ribs see at you know third degree burns see it as an effective doctors will telling the press that evening they weren't sure he was going to make it through the night well it turns out you did make it through the night and in fact walked out of there on his own power six weeks later out of the hospital as one of the reasons he was able to do that is because he was pumped full of pain and pain killers and this is something that very soon he became dependent on he he really spent a.
