Epic Games Announces Plans for Fortnite Esports in 2021

"Minute from E Sports Network. The Esports minute is presented by technology game-changers. Check them out at TGC play link below epic released a blog post yesterday talking about their plans for the fortnite Esports ecosystem in 2021. We've come a long way since epic pledged would hundred million dollars towards fortnite Esports events back in 2018. The game has waned in popularity a bit but still commands a massive audience according to Epic 15 million unique players took part in the end of the season event earlier this week. The competitive side was also supposed to have some consistency in 2024 the first time but as everyone knows consistancy and twenty20 just don't belong in the same sentence. So first let's go for the bad news from this blog post epic is not currently planning any in-person events for 2021 including the fortnite World Cup. This is unfortunate, but it off. Safe choice to make if we get a massive roll out of a vaccine in early spring which seems like the most likely possibility at this point that could all change but for now online events just have to be the plan change it on the positive side the Ford I championship series or f n c s we moved to trios as the primary form of competition previously solos and Duo's when the main choice in fortnite Esports in my opinion Iraq is a crucial aspect when it comes to enjoying e sports events and trios adds another level of communication and strategy. The fmcs will be the Bayside competition for fortnite Esports. Basically the closest thing to a regular season with the fmcs will be the Baseline competition for fortnite Esports. Basically the closest thing to a regular season, but epic will also be putting together more weekly tournaments more random unique tournaments and more Creator Cubs 2021 and not all of those will be in trios. So fans of Duos and solos will still have some events to look forward to basically they're mostly missing

"To tolerate that. That's that's the kind of law and order were talking about. You know Rudy Giuliani for he's got some warts on him. I know But as the mayor of New York City, he did that city a great service by pursuing the so called broken windows. Theory of policing you police the little things you send out the message that we're not going to tolerate your law breaking at this low level and that that filters up Crime rate dropped massively, New York was reinvented as a tourist attraction. People felt safe there billions and billions of dollars poured into that city because of what Giuliani did. Think about it right now. Which which? I mean, does anybody have a really strong hankering to go moved Wauwatosa right now. I mean, I don't Not after what's been going on there. That what's been allowed to happen there? I'm not blaming the police. I'm blaming the elected officials for not standing up and letting the police do their job there. Let me go to back to the phones here. Bayside and Michael Michael, you're on Newstalk 11 30. Hi. I think your point is very well in Kenosha. When Trump in Kenosha, Who do you want to talk to the business orders that were impacted and the police officers who tried to maintain order. Who did it, But I didn't want to talk with. He wanted to talk to the scumbag to fill this up. Well, I mean, it's one of the things that's interesting about this is I didn't hear that with the last thing that, he said, was that cleaner, not ball. All you get kind of garbled in there. I was reaching for the dump button. So anyway, yeah. I mean, the the whole thing that some of the Justification of the social justice movement in the and even some of the things that the anarchist playoff is that they have to take individuals who are bad actors in some cases. And somehow glorify them. The individual in Kenosha. It is apparent Well, I had a weapon a knife and did not follow the lawful order of police officers. By the way, if there is a police officer who looks threatened and you're resisting arrest, why you Putting your you're taking your own life in your hands. What do you have your mind? I'll never understand that. I'll never understand it. But you know, in order to to justify the outrage, you have to glorify the individual who was in this particular case, not acting lawfully. And you have to turn him into some sort of hero. It's not the case. I mean, you look at what this individual dead, you know, putting kids in a car potentially in jeopardy. Brandishing a weapon in the presence of police officers who told him to drop it. He refused to do so. Well, I mean, you know it's going to have a bad outcome, and that's what happened. But that's not a justification to go running through downtown Kenosha, smashing cars on car lots and and burning down stores and looting and that sort of thing. Those two things are mutually exclusive. Let me go to Madison and speak to Paul. Paul. You're on. Go ahead, say huge fan of yours and marks. So I was in Madison I used to live in Chicago moved to Madison to get away from the riots. When will we know how that worked up anywhere? Wait, wait. That's an interesting statement. Paul. You can't run from it. That's just it. Madison's another great example. Know Madison is a bit of an exception because there is so much eccentric Lefty ism going on in Madison, and it's Generational. Now it's gone on from from the aging hippies to whatever the university's spit out now to a bunch of millennials who are so analysts and who are so devoid of purpose in their life that they've grasp onto anything think that they're they're doing something that that's valuable, unjust and that's what sets the environment in which all that disorder takes place. I'm sorry. Go ahead. And I was I was born in Kenosha County. So it's just like it's following me. Um, please. What is it? Don't move to Brookfield. That's where I live. Yeah, but yeah. So what I want to say, though, um Now I'm in Madison and you, Khun, just walking up in non street pastry You like see like these graffiti, and it's like if it wasn't like graffiti would be beautiful, like like these people should take up painting. But like you feel like the things like, break the break their fingers so they don't shoot like a picture of pay, And it's Oh, and just like all all these different things like it's like these beautiful stores and suffer boarded up. It's like I just I don't know what happened. Sure. No. I mean, I understand the point, Paul. Thanks for the call. I understand what he's saying. E mean, complete disrespect. You know for law enforcement officers, but also but filtered that down a little bit. It's disrespect for the law. What we saw in Madison when we saw the Don statue get get toppled over and that sort of thing. This was just disregard for what American society sort stands for, and that's part of the point of the anarchists. Their deal is they don't want to work within the system for reform. They want to blow the system up and start their own thing. And the best way that they have decided to do. Excuse me. Let me say that again. The best tactic they've decided to employ. Why say best. The one that's most effective is toe identified weak leadership who will not stand up against them and demand that through violence. They be appeased. We're seeing in Portland. That's what we saw in Chicago for for many, many nights during the summer. It's what we saw in Madison. It was on Kenosha. A guy called and said, You know, the people doing the know the breaking and the writing and the looting in Kenosha. They weren't locals. They were imports. Absolutely, because that movement is spreading. To the south side. Jeremy, you're on. Go ahead. Hi. Good evening. Thanks. Had me Jerry, retired chief from Milwaukee. I just want to say law and order is definitely on the ballot, and I have pollsters calling me and I lie to them. Just because they have my personal information. And if they knew I was I was gonna vote for Trump. I would be fearful that they would come in damage my house or my condo in Milwaukee. So I I lied..

Authorship Attribution of Lennon McCartney Songs

"Mark Glickman and I'm at Harvard University as a senior lecturer in statistics, statistics is a topic that the audience really loves hearing about before we get into the main topic. Can you give us a little bit of background on the areas of stats that you studied or maybe those that interest you the most? Yeah, well. What got me into statistics in the first place? Actually was my interest in the Game Chess I've always been interested in how chess players get rated when they play in tournaments in other. Other words when you go to a tournament, you get a numerical rating. Where if you have two players have ratings, you could actually determine the profitability that player defeats at other, and that was something that I was always interested in these chess rating systems, and I ended up getting really into statistics and the mathematical aspects of these kinds of systems and I developed a couple systems that are in use these days, especially in online gaming called the Licko system. So that's really got me into statistics in. In, the first place and I really have a passion for teaching, so that's a big part of my statistics life, and then much more recently got into the intersection between statistics and music, and this Beatles authorship attribution project is one of the bits of work also got involved with a student who is really the primary driver of this work on basically how to use statistically generates music that sounds like Corrales, and so we have a paper. That's GonNa, be coming very shortly in that area so. So, yes, a music's become a much bigger focus in my statistics like these days. Is there anything obviously interest could drive it but I'm curious if there's any computational component to it may be the availability of computers to run big simulations, and that sort of thing has that influenced the ability to ask interesting questions along these lines? Yeah, generally it helps I. mean I tend not to gravitate to problems which can only be solved by having the appropriate hardware to be able to crank through the data? Having access to good computing definitely makes a big difference I think we can take for granted that any listener must be aware of the Beatles and their influence on music. Regardless of what they like should they could a few, but tell us a little bit more background for those that don't know the discography. What were the types of problems you were looking to? To approach this whole project essentially started when I met my main collaborator for this project Jason Brown. When the two of US happened to be at this conference in Prince, Edward Island! We just happened to be talking. After I gave a talk some material. Actually that's related to rating systems for chess players, and we just happened to stumble on our mutual interest. Interest in music, and in the Beatles, and he was telling me that he had gained a little bit of infamy about fifteen years ago, where he used essentially a forty-eight analysis, decomposing the sounds from the starting court of a hard day's night to figure out the actual instrumentation of the cord, because that really been something that was in pretty serious dispute so. So he published a little article audit and got him some attention, and he was telling me since then one of the things that he was particularly interested in was being able to represent Sohn's particularly Beatles songs in particular format in his area of math, which is graph theories, essentially representing music in the form of essentially graphs or networks and he wanted to. Be Able to use it to be able to distinguish authorship of different Beatles songs like maybe there'd be stylistic differences that would be evident in these representations, anyone really making a lot of headway and whole problem of being able to sing wish authorship is something that's much more firmly in the wheelhouse of a statistician, so I told him it sounds like he probably something I would want to be heavily involved in and so we ended up starting this collaboration, and that was kind of started it all, so we tried lots of different sorts of things. Things to take the music and be able to figure out. How can you predict authorship from musical features, and that's essentially what led us down the path to the work that eventually got published so from my perspective, wearing my data scientist hat, I would say you have a fixed data set that is partially labeled. Does that feel like the right framing for you? The main question of interest really and just to take a step back is that there are a handful of songs by the Beatles and again there's nothing about this problem that has to. To be specific to be spent for our interests there handful songs by the Beatles that or of disputed authorship, and so the idea is that you start off with a data set where the labels which is to say the authorship of Lennon McCartney songs is known that's known because the Beatles Bayside interviews in various information that's been gathered over the years is of note authorship, so we have a data set where the labels are no, and then in addition to that we have for all of those songs. We have a whole bunch of features A. A whole bunch of information about various musical aspects of the songs and idea is to form a statistical model that uses those features to predict the labels, and then once you establish that relationship then you apply to the songs of disputed authorship to see the predictions going to be based on that relationship, so for non composers who might be listening? Perhaps they could be intimidated by this problem. Saying music is all about creativity and unpredictability in these sorts of things. Is this truly assault problem from that point of view well? Yes, solvable a loaded word. I mean we certainly made our best attempt by Best Ibiza? After making lots of attempts that were not terribly predictive, we finally stumbled on said features and a statistical approach that seems to do a pretty reasonable job. Making predictions, the simple answer I suppose is yes, it's possible at solvable in the sense that there is information that you can extract. That is predictive of other ships. I could be pretty. Pretty concrete about this one thing that we knew before going into this work, and this is something that has been well known by musicologists studying. Beatles, music, which is that Paul? McCartney songs in particular tend to have melodies that tend to move around a lot like Paul McCartney, had a musical vocal range, fairly wide and part of that tended to be reflected in his moving melody by contrast John Lennon. had a reasonable vocal range tended to write melodies that didn't move around very much like he used a lot of repeated notes, or the vocal movements would stay very close and pitch, and that's characteristic of a lot of John Lennon songs, and so we knew even going into the problem that you know. musicologists have identified differences in the way that each of these songwriters would write music, so we knew that there were features that could be quantified and picked up. Up and used as distinguish irs in these classification models.

Food And Beverage Industry Hit Hard By Coronavirus Outbreak

"It is a hugely uncertain time for those in the service industry restaurants and bars have been closing their doors and that has meant so many people have already lost their jobs. We bring you now. The stories of three people trying to figure out what happens next. My name is Simone Barron and I work in the service industry I have for thirty four years and I currently live in Seattle Washington. I was working for Tom. Douglas Restaurants Tom Decided to close all of his restaurants Laying off eight hundred people. It's pretty devastating. Everybody's really unsure how they're going to pay their rent pay their mortgages see their children their families. We all know that if we don't get that next paycheck that a lot of us are going to be in some trouble and then that's the other thing that we're all worried about is if we will have jobs to go back to so. We're all really panicked right now. Yeah My name is Daryl noon and I am a partner in a wine store and bar in Manhattan. We have a shopping meals. Have a bar. And we're in a an open market place so the sales of the bar dropped pretty drastically but people were buying wine in a way. That was like pretty panic. Inducing like cleaning out our shelves so quickly quickly after that everything had to shut down except for our retail store. But that nobody was going to be allowed to come down so we were only allowed to do deliveries which we had never done before people are like calling in Queens and being like. Hey Can you come to Bayside? And should we go to bayside and drop off a bottle of wine to someone? It's it's a fascinating new reality. My name is Samara Sariano. I am a food server in San Francisco California. The last couple of weeks have been extremely stressful and pretty scary. A lot of people stopped coming out. Normally I worked six shifts a week and last week. I was scheduled three shifts a week. I basically used the money to pay off bills for this month and to buy what groceries I could and I really don't have even one hundred dollars to my name now And I'm really not sure what I'm going to be doing for rent or bills next month. I've already implied for unemployment insurance. But I know that will take weeks to come through and it was still probably won't be sufficient to support me. San Francisco's so expensive and my rent is a great worry to me right now. It's a difficult time for so many people what can be done. We're going to put that question to Sean Kennedy. He's an executive vice president. At the National Restaurant Association that organization represents more than half a million restaurant businesses and they sent a letter to the White House and Congressional leaders yesterday asking for critical help. Thanks so much for being with us on good morning. What Kinda help are you looking for? They're really three buckets that The restaurant industries looking at right now one is just immediate access to cash second is medium and long-term access to credit and then tax relief for the industry when we come back on line. This is really the perfect storm for the restaurant industry. This is not like a natural disaster. That's located in one particular area. The passes quickly and we focused on rebuilding. There's a nationwide problem in which States and localities are just shutting down restaurant operations across the nation without a lot of warning and with tremendous impact in our. It's certainly early days but I mean given what we're seeing. Do you have any estimate as to how many people in the industry could ultimately end up employed? That's a great question right now. What a lot of restaurants are doing is trying to retool trying to allow for more takeout drive through delivery services For a lot of restaurants they just physically aren't able to consider themselves that way for other restaurants they're looking at whether or not switching to that business model is going to generate enough revenue to keep the doors open and the burners turned on so my sister happens to work in the restaurant industry. It was talking to her yesterday and she was just heartbroken. Because this is work as you know people who work in the Industry. They socialize with their co workers. They become sort of your extended family. Her entire community her entire network has been affected by. We heard from some employees Just a couple of minutes ago. Who are deeply concerned about their own future. What is your message to them right now. It is heartbreaking and a lot of our restaurant owners view their employees as family Almost all they do is saying but it's one in which we are really struggling with the best approach we can take. That's where it'd be making such an aggressive ask of Congress right now. This is a national pandemic. It's a public emergency. So we need the public government to step in and provide this funding so that our goal right now is really just to keep these employees on payroll allow them to continue to work for us even if we're not operational even if we're in hibernation so to speak so that as soon as we get the all clear signal from public health officials we can pivot. We can open up those doors and we can bring everyone back online as quickly and immediately as possible new knotted to this earlier. But are they going to be restaurants? That just can't survive because they can't make it on takeout alone. We're really trying to avoid that. But it what is challenging right? Now as we don't know a natural disaster has a beginning a middle and an end we were in the beginning of this right now and we cannot forecast how long we're going to be in this position. Or when are we allowed to open Restaurants generally measure their cash flow and available credit in days weeks. Probably not months so as it becomes a sustained problem. The restaurants are going to have to really tough decisions to make which is why we need Congress to act quickly. We've heard these calls to the public to buy a gift certificate to their favorite neighborhood restaurant as a show of support. Is that something you think is a good idea right now? We we absolutely support that. Obviously we are focused right now on serving our community. These are difficult times for everybody and usually if it's a snow day if it's a natural disaster folks are going to the restaurants. We don't want to change that at all. We want to continue to be the center piece of the cornerstone. These communities Sean Kennedy with the Natch National Restaurant Association. We appreciate

'Saved By The Bell' Reboot Will Feature Trans Teen In Lead Role: 'Most Popular Girl At Bayside'

"I know you guys are really really excited about this. Next one saved by the bell is coming being back. There is a Eric's already just took hold on a reboots featuring a transgender retain actor in the lead role Biological male presenting himself as a woman has been cast alongside Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley. Toyota will start as lexi beautiful sharp tongue cheerleader and the most popular girl at Bayside High. who was both admired and feared by her fellow students? Thank thank God. They are jumping into these social justice warrior Conversation and one of the PLOTLINES will Feature you too many low income high schools that Morris has governor of California. He's GonNa tackle that okay so ridiculous so this person I get mixed up with what what Pronoun the call them. But this person's playing an actual trans person in the show. They're injecting that's plotline into the show or it's just a trans actress. It's playing and I think it's a trend accurate. I think it's a trans actress. That's playing a girl. Okay so the Trans thing is not in the plot line so I have no problem awesome really. I mean I was about to get was getting irritated because I thought they were injecting. That plot bill they I mean I feel like they are but it's definitely it's pretty obvious but you know this stuff that I talk about all the time like People have and this is my issue stuff like this is that they take franchises. Right had these Hollywood elite. Or what have you. Everybody's an activist. Now certainly post two thousand sixteen everybody's inactive. Everybody has to wear it on the sleeve so unfortunately only what they what they do now. is they hijack things that existed that they didn't personally maybe create That obviously didn't catch on because they were doing stuff like this right and they try to inject their own personal approaches and not just in the casting. I talk about this all the time on with with like you know Ray Swab certain classically whatever characters. I talk about this all the time. They do stuff like that. And they hijack things that have long existed we all are accustomed to and brands To just again it's their platform at this point in a expect you not to say something about it and again if you know once so and so does a video about it. Says this is silly. They're going to be called transphobic in pretty much everything else in the book. That's the way they set it up but these guys can't come up with anything. Original and Dan have those sorts of things happen date they want if he caught all whatever. You know what I mean. I'm not necessarily a person WHO's watching. TV on top. But if they had some new France this is and now we're sort of what they wanted to do in terms of an approach to activism and social justice. It's probably not GonNa do that. Will but make a new brand and then anyway instead of hijacking what already exists will people know and then trying to inject I want clarification of. It's actually a trans actor. That's that's a plot in the show or they plant in the are off as a girl and they sneak address. The trans part from from my interpretation of the story that I read. They're not addressing the transport but to me. It's like they're doing this so that the headline can read a doctor's so groundbreaking oh You know how great it will be interesting to see. Because Mario Lopez is going to be US remember he had and they wanted to cancel fil him very badly so it will be interesting to see how that dynamic they should have lifted where it was like. I'm tired of necessarily be what it was. That's something you do not pose as opposed to just reboots. I think need to be done the correct there is a correct way to do it. That ain't it Is All I'm saying you know what if you WANNA create something new something fresh and I just don't think I don't know the ideas and I just figured you know it certainly myself. I've talked to a lot of people among An arts writers and so forth like like these people are very very talented mess. The best at taking come up with something that has long. This is like what where's the actual talent within. Hollywood does it

"I was like, I don't know not that I'm not interested. I just never did. So I watched in five weeks watched every single one was nineteen at the time. I think in five weeks on on the toy either all in my bunk late in my bunk for five or six weeks. And I'm like, no. Nineteen movies. And then I got and then I got home from tour, and and my girlfriend, and I went to we got to go see Infinity work together. Nice. Did you come out of each movie? Like check captain America understand with that. Right. Those moments must have been fun. Did you have conversations about the movies afterwards? Oh, yeah. Totally totally. And it was cool. I feel like I got to experience it in a in a really interesting way because you binge-watch shows, you know, you don't really binge watch movies, nobody really binge watches movies. So I feel like I got to watch all those movies and see all the correlations between the mall and all the throwbacks to each other and character development. I got to watch it all like cram together as post to seeing over the course of ten years. That's pretty neat. It was awesome. So we I called our publicist we were planning this press trip with the new record coming out saying we have to go back to marvel, and they were like, well, you just they're like less than a year ago again, but it's different now like I have to go I have to go back. Yes. Some civil war, obviously, civil wars a favorite ragnarok, Jack. What about you? What are your favorites? Right now, actually Ragnar is one of the ones that I'd seen recently that I really liked a lot specifically for that. For that reason, I loved a lot of the loved allow characters coming out and being like borderline slapsticky. I really liked aim and the wasp that I saw. Yeah. Do you were a bit complicated grownup? No, no, which I find great because that's how we see so many fans come into our universe. Whether it's you watch the movies, then people find the toys, they find the games. They find the comics. They find whatever. Yeah. I'm very thankful that someone who has been reading comic since I was six years old, right? Like, I have welcomed everyone into the fold. Yeah. Like, Jack, I have some comics laying around also that that a lily my daughter's when when she read, but she's getting really into all the superheroes. Though. She she loves that she watches all the TV shows. She likes the cartoons. She likes to just kind of look at them, the toys, I think that that that'll probably be in her future. Nice. Now, you guys are going on tour big tour. That's right after thanksgiving through like into February yet basically runs from the end of November through February. But there's breaks obviously for thanksgiving. We're gonna be home for the holidays as well. And then kind of back out, but it's exciting. It'll be a different type of tour than we've ever done. It was going to be. Additional instrumentation. We are crew is are all musicians. Also. So we're gonna actually bring them into the front. They can play. We have Kaley cheap performs goals. She's going to be opening the show for us. And also performing with us playing keyboards singing some extra instrumentation as well. So I think what you were talking about it being reimagined. It's interesting. I feel like it's almost like base is what it is. But it's almost like when we were doing this. We're almost covering them as a different van. So it's going to be nice to kind of provide fans who've seen this a million times a different experience than have something completely unique. What are the best and worst things of touring? You know, we are on the show. We talked to all kinds of people talk to sports people. We talked comic creators, but don't often get to talk to people who do two and a half months away from their families on the road. What are the best things about it being away from everybody's clearly the worst part as we've gotten older over the years..

"That that's where we try to take people off of medians and get them work it's been very successful that's not funded in the current budget the one that was proposed so i wanna make sure that we fund that community policing in bayside i wanna make sure that we protect what's going on down there as we saw the article this weekend i'm bayside needs all the resources that it can get the community policing down there has been caught in the original budget so i wanted to make sure that that's their the office of economic opportunity in office that is really working to try to integrate immigrants and get them jobs has been really successful when we first passed it what we did was we said we would go out and look for grants to try to get additional funding for positions we've been unsuccessful in that i don't want the program to suffer just because we have not been able to get those grants yet so at fund one of those positions and then the last big one is implementing our pesticide ordinance we passed an ordinance to make sure that pesticides are that are banned from the city we've a lot of work to do this was unanimous by the council and those that program was not funded in the budget so this is really to try to get these pieces in so that's one piece of it the second piece is and this is the piece that you won't like as much but right now in the city of portland property taxes are paid by residents of the city at a rate of fifty nine percent of the budget is funded fifty nine percents from proper sorry properties of the property tax revenue we received fifty nine percent comes from residents and fortyone percent comes from businesses that's out of balance in my mind that should be closer to even if not flipped the other way around we need to be reducing the burden on property tax payers on their homes because these are folks who are struggling maybe on fixed incomes we.
