"Deserved. But and Baylor wasn't disrespecting necessarily. You're not disrespected when you're the number two team in the country, but basically everybody in the world because I didn't want it all perfect team perfect season and people like, Well, you know that Zach still don't play the toughest level competition, and it's like They were just came on the David to him. I mean, they they descended. Never Once Baylor went up nine. Nothing to start the game. I don't think inside never got closer than like eight points, maybe nine again. And I mean, they had control that game from start to finish a really impressive performance. Davion Mitchell is a hell of a player that die best defender on the floor and probably the quickest college basketball players. I can remember watching. I mean that guy. Goes off the trouble and just assume is right it the right way. It's like it's like he teleports. It's crazy, and you know, you would think because he's not the biggest guy defensively. He's not a lawyer. There. He hounds the ball handler consistently on the perimeter. He's so good help, probably a lottery pick an MBA. And just, you know, Baylor, capping off a really nice season. Where they kind of it kind of feels that they weren't it now, maybe as much as they should have been because they did. It was never in doubt. Yeah, Yeah. Baylor shot lights out and had a really good game. Credit credit to Baylor. Um, but that was that's good pick. All right, Alex. Who is your e? I love it. Yeah. Who is your user? Er visits the big 10. We're having such a great year in college basketball at the tournament comes and they forget how to play basketball mission was the only big 10 team to even make the sweet 16 if I'm not mistaken Illinois around 32 per do. A round of 64 was Thompson round of 32. Iowa round of 32. I mean, come on. Come on now. Maryland round of 32. I mean, I took go on Rutgers around 32. I could just keep doing this, but I'm gonna save us the torture stuff that's been Get some help. Yeah, The big 10 needed some serious health because Ohio State obviously round of 64, you know, but like They deserved the heat for it. But it sucked because while I was in a lot of was happy to see Ohio State lose, I was like, Oh, God. Here come. The big 10 is overrated people, and then it just kept coming, because I all those other teams that's right away. So Mr May have made the elite eight and, you know, salvage something for the Big 10 this year, But I think the ending of that Mr Game probably will live in our heads for a little while. Well, here's a question and I want to maybe get your guys his thoughts, too. But Wisconsin had a really good season two and they had a really good tournament run up until Baylor. Do you think they would If they didn't have Baylor on their side of the bracket? Do you think that they would have Gone further, Maybe, but you know they were. They were an eight seed right? So or a nine seed. They were nine of the North Carolina was eight. So you gotta run into that one seat. So if they didn't run into Baylor, and they would have to run into considering they probably are beating Illinois that they probably are beating Michigan who they already lost you twice. So you know they abandoned ice year, but, you know, they didn't stack up to elegance. Some of the best teams in the country, So you know they played really well in the North Carolina Dean Bloom out of the gym, but You know, tough luck, and it's written. This really falls on the shoulders of Ohio State in Illinois. In Iowa. More than like, you know, Rutgers or Michigan State or anybody, so but, yeah, it tends my loser for all this talk on our show and everybody show really, But I'll get the big 10 is all year and then boom. Forget about that. So boom have stood Tough luck. Yes, yeah. Okay, Biggie Smalls. But you got the biggie Smalls shirt on it, baby. Who's your winner? My winner this week is going to go to the U Mass Minutemen hockey team, winning their first ever national title, beating ST Cloud State. I don't know where ST Cloud is located on the map. But their state meeting in five nothing in the national title game last night in Pittsburgh, winning it wire to wire the I think this is the This is actually the biggest shut out, and, incidentally history for a national title game and without doubt one of the best highlight goals coming from the stick. Of Philip Lagoon off for the Minuteman just pretty dangle and going back 10 5 hole on the same club goaltender who and they were actually also They were kind of shorthanded in there. There's semi final game, having some guys and covert protocol, but we're able to get them back healthy. Get him back for last night's game, the U Mass Minutemen hockey team winning the first national title. My winners this week, So I don't miss ST Cloud State University is so what I said in Minnesota, about two hours outside of Minneapolis. That that I'm aware of. I'm just being a making a smart alec. A response in terms. I know. I had no idea where that I'm like this place even exists. God presently does. But yeah, No, that was a smart out. Comment about a I don't know. There was a state called ST Cloud. But hey, here here. That's just in and it's this. All right, miss. Who is sure? Oh, loser. I could go along a lot of different rounds when I go, Justin Thomas, you know, just imploding after after the weather delay down at the Don Augusta. Um, falling almost out of out of reach for the tournament. He is still one under, uh, but he's got a hell of a trick to make them himself into contention. For the Masters. But they said that that that that's you know, terrible tumble from yesterday. We'll definitely be my loser this week. So with that being said, let's hit that music Skip Okay. Hold.

How Baylor Upset Gonzaga

"Deep in the heart of Texas after the regular bears broke the hearts of basketball fans across the Northwest. Is ABC. TJ Holmes. The Baylor Bears champions and spoilers, ruining Gonzaga's hopes of a historic undefeated season and in blowout fashion, dominating the Bulldogs from start to finish. The Baylor Bears the national champions and winning their first title in school history is really like a family like After 30 days in the bubble, we ate together watched movies together. We did everything together, and that's just a really cool thing. I remember that probably more than win the championship. Baylor guard Jared Butler was named most outstanding player after his 22 point performance that included 43 pointers and leading Baylor's beat down of the bulldog. Gonzaga. Enter the championship matchup Undefeated 31. Oh, but was in trouble right out of the gate, going down nine to nothing in the opening minutes with After surviving last rounds late game thriller, Gonzaga was hoping for more magic and a comeback. It's really really tough wand. And storybook season on and obviously we're all disappointed in here. But, you know, as I told the guys like you make it this far in your 31. I know going into the last one. There's absolutely nothing you should ever feel bad about. But Jalen subs in the Bulldogs never recovered from Baylor's devastating opening blow. The city of Waco deserves this Texas way. Got a national championship to the state deserves it. Guys get this the last three teams that were in the tournament undefeated and went to The final four they lost in the final four that was being held in Indianapolis.

Butler Boosts the Baylor Bears To Beat the Houston Rockets

"Were your thoughts on Thursday our Houston before we move into the big one that before the bad guy. I think that Davion Mitchell is such an annoying Defender. I mean that and the highest respect regard he he just forced his players into badge. Even when they make it and one of the announcement a game in that the first Final Four game said don't take it personally and it's so true. He had backpacks were steals. He reached in his slit its feet and cut his manage charges flops. You don't know what you're really going to get out of those guys offensively one of these players that Jean gerow was writing some hot streak for Houston into the tournament back to spike the score a little bit and then you look at the box score. He's three for 10 with six points and five turnovers. Those are the type of games that they be on Mitchell can force you into having agreed with you how good he was was offensively zero turnovers against a team in Houston that wants to speed you up and make bad decisions is semi incredible and the game really was over by halftime and it was just how much can this deficit be cut into and there is no looking back. Jerry Butler was great 17.6 of nine shooting for free from 3 a guy that just never seems really sped up even wage. Trapped he was under control. He was composed and without Marcus after having 17 points in the first half that game could have been way worse, which is crazy to say.

Underrated Baylor Wins NCAA Title

"We're talking gonzaga. The aftermath we talked about baylor and baylor being underrated. Quite frankly if you look at baylor and take out the games after their covert pause and he's are games that were played from february twenty four to march eighteenth they were two and six against the spread and the other games eighteen and four baylor against the spread. In fact you dug into those games. It's even more impressive. Eighteen and four against spread and also in those twenty two games yet. Twenty two straight up in those game. I think that means zero percent losses. Right yes and not even not one game that they had any reasonable chance to lose. What every one of the games by eight points or more. These include winds not just in the ncaa tournament but they beat illinois. Whose when you keep saying they baylor maybe mentioned the team in k. or beat illinois early in the year by eight or more they mean day. Yes okay go ahead. They bears and so just alter impressive to win every single game. Baylor by eight plus points

"baylor" Discussed on Slate's Hang Up and Listen

"A clip here. God so john is. What do you think will be more likely to remember in the future. Sexist shot or baylor taking him and gonzaga completely apart in the final. So i've been thinking about this and i did. A little piece after suggs is shot off the backboard and that semi some some late night exuberance. They're trying to assess where it placed in history and the fact that sega got the crap out of them in the final. Maybe takes it down a notch. But still like i remember random buzzer-beaters like james forrest against usc or whether it's like bryce drew or thais edney way more than i remember just like any national champion like i was just thinking this morning. It wasn't that long ago dante. David chen ju just like totally went off national title. I didn't remember. I had to look it up and it was michigan and so i think just based on my own memory and life experience. I think i will remember the jalen slugs buzzer beater. I'll i'll remember kind of what i shouted when it went in. I remember where i was and what it felt like. Maybe because these individuals small moments are more indelible and easier for us to remember but the baylor victory was so comprehensive and so impressive and yet steph n maybe it was the fact that it was so thorough and comprehensive and impressive that like no kind of individual moment stood out and i guess in some ways that's the baylor's credit and other ways. I'm just being honest. I don't know if i'll be able to like recall missio teague and jared butler and davey on mitchell and less daylight become nba stars. Yeah i think that's right. I mean the game was felt over after five minutes. I mean it wasn't. The guy couldn't come back from a double digit deficit. And they'd only trail by double digits twice over the course of their first thirty one games one was in the regular season and one was against ucla. It just felt like such a complete annihilation that it was one of those games where you kept saying. Wow i really hope they come back and then you checked herself and said man. There's no way they're coming back They cut it to nine in the second half. And then baylor said not in our house and pumped back up to fifteen or not in there. Lucas oil stadium house in the end. so not in our house come on basically said fuck you. We're such a total. You know it was. It was a train wreck of a game for gonzaga. they couldn't do anything offensively. Baylor is hitting threes left and right and playing stifling defense. it was clear. Who was the better team on this night whether they were the better team. Over the course of the season but gonzaga's thirty one dow ken pomeroy metrics had them as the best team of the last twenty years so it did feel surprising. That was not the exciting game that i think we all were hoping for. And i do think we'd be more inclined to remember champions if there were more correlation between winning a championship and being the best team. You know and that's the. I always complain about this really and it does make me a fuddy. The tournament is great for drama. It's great for ratings. It's great you know for for competition. But in terms of determining who's the best team in any given season. It's just not that. And i'm not saying the baylor isn't because watching that game. It was hard to think it was hard to figure out a way in which gonzaga was better than baylor right. But you know they had been over the course of the season they have probably of the two teams the one i guess the best. Nba talent and jalen jobs. And you know they've proven that the entire season. But i mean again. A one game sample. Anything can happen in gonzaga's coming out of the game a tremendously emotional draining game where they had to go deep into overtime just to win that game. This is no way to know like two nights to some that same kind of energy and intensity against a team even better than the one you just beat. I mean it's not necessarily going to go on your favorite. If those two teams that played on a neutral site in january like. I don't presume that baylor would be gonzaga about sixteen point like they were supposed to josh. I i wonder whether baylor's blemished record. They lost two games during the season maybe obscured their greatness especially when everybody was kind of distracted by gonzaga table. Baylor didn't play though between february second and february twenty third because of a kovic shutdown when they came back the barely be an iowa state team that was to in sixteen at the time. they're losing. They're losing that game by seventeen points. I mean that to me even more than the two losses is an indication that baylor was severely compromised. When it came from that covid pause. I mean there's no way that this baylor team or any other baylor team. There would be anything approximating full strength with struggle with an iowa state team that finished and twenty two and then four days later they lost the kansas by thirteen and then they lost in the big twelve semi final to oklahoma state by nine. Yes so. I like partially sign on everything. That joel said you know. I think we've seen especially in the last decade or so with the rise of the three point shot that if you're making your threes than things can go sideways really quickly and you know. I don't want to paint me deeply to to do this. But like if you watch like the rockets and the warriors and that slow in the in the playoffs is making or missing threes can make a team look like a world beater or absolute trash just like depending on the night. And so i think you know looking at the stats. I wasn't following baylor super closely in the beginning of the tournament. But they put this graphic on the screen. And it's like jared butler had some like pretty horrible shooting numbers early in the tournament and you like watch the final four..

two games seventeen points two teams january ucla sixteen second half Baylor jared butler oklahoma kansas james forrest two nights john one game nine davey last decade joel february second

"baylor" Discussed on The Kevin Sheehan Show

"The coach of the nineteen eighty Hockey team and said after beating the russians in the semi finals still had to beat finland and mark. You nance related the story. And i'm paraphrasing here. But he said something. Like mark view said a jim baylor's not finland as if to say no. We are playing the best in the next game. I think he knew it. Some of the early on you could tell he was like what do we do here. What do we do. Because this isn't something that we've seen this year and it wasn't and i personally thought that butler was phenomenal in the game. But i think david mitchell was the best all around player in the tournament I i can't wait to see him at the next level. Although i'd love to watch him in college again Got so many different sort of you know. He's got some older depot. He's got some westbrook. He's got donovan mitchell. And everybody points to him because the name and number forty five. He's going to be a really really interesting pro because he is relentless like there's so much about him that you're just like that's the kind of guy that usually has a really good nba career because he's just so hyper competitive and plays with such great energy It was impressive man. It was impressed. It was very impressed. a couple of other quick things number one This is a nod to my good friend. Joe yasser off I think. I think i mentioned this onto this morning but joe tweeted something out last night that i just. I've been screaming about all tournament long first of all. Let me just say i'm not a big fan of raftery and hill as the number one team with nance anymore. Gimme jimmy jackson. Gimme a couple of other people. Now that ship. I know raftery is one of the nicest people in broadcasting. I know that grant hill is an all time. Great in a phenomenal communicator. There's just no constructive criticism during these broadcasts would be you know. They looked at the call that suggs had the block on cody riley in the game the other night and we saw that replay ten times and we saw cody riley hand being completely raked in it affecting the shot and they kept talking about what a great block it was and how clean it was and last night it was a constant excuse making affair for for you for gonzaga having. They're just not the same they. They're exhausted exhausted for what playing an extra five minutes. Let me tell you some houston if anybody watched houston the two seed. They were one of the best and most physical defensive teams of the season. Baylor handle them. But i guarantee you baylor in come out of that game fresh as daisies and it was all about. You know gonzaga last night. I just thought they missed the mark but anyway yasser off tweeted out during the game. You know joe very well. Joe longtime television executive in town. Sports television executive. I don't think that's exaggerating His career he said. Cbs please stop showing off all your cameras during live action use them only for replay thanks. Cbs did this throughout the tournament. And i just drove me fucking crazy. They would give you this angle from like the deep corner of the arena. And you're like looking at it. You're like can. I see the game. Like i'm normally watching the game in. What happens in these things. Tommy in these big events a lotta times the directors. They get real fancy. They got all these cameras to work with. They got all these shots and they may not even be the biggest basketball fans. But my my advice always in these situations in. Cbs was culprit during this tournament. There every single game. You'd get thirty seconds to a minute of an angle. That was just impossible to understand to see what was going on. There is a reason that the tickets deep in the corner in the bowels of and arena are half the price of the tickets midcourt. Okay give us the mid court view the way we watch games the best seat in the house. We don't need the other stuff. I thought that was spot on one other thing Real quickly before we get to the next subject which will be sam darnold so after these championship games. You get the all way too early. Preseason top twenty five for the next year you know. espn does it. sports does it. And you know it's incomplete because you don't know who's going and who's staying at this point but you and i haven't had the conversation since thursday but you know charging got extended in maryland had a phenomenal weekend You know with getting two of the biggest time transfers in the country and will hop from georgetown and fats russell from rhode island and i said When they made those. When they got those acquisitions farren wiggins comes back. This is a top fifteen minimum next year. Preseason will jeff goodman has number five preseason. espn's got him six preseason. Cbs has a low. Gary parrish put at thirteen. Preseason it all assumes wiggins comes back if wiggins doesn't come back they'll still be in the top twenty five but they'll be closer to twenty five than they will five By the way. I'm not i mean i love that stuff. I wanna be thought of as a good team. I wanna be thought of as a team that can can win it all potentially or certainly be a final four contender but it doesn't mean shit like these things. All these things will change because of commits and then players surprise people by staying and so this thing will will switch. But if aaron wiggins comes back which i think he will he should because he's got a chance to play on a big time team next year and be an get all american consideration. Be first team all big ten preseason and move himself from maybe undrafted into the first round. He's got that chance But none of this means anything to those of you that are pissed off that turgeon got the extension and don't care about the transfers in junior miserable I hear you. this doesn't mean anything like maryland's been ranked preseason under turgid in the top ten multiple times. They were preseason number. Two in two thousand fifteen when thought to be you know a favourite to win the national championship and they got to the sweet sixteen. That was the one sweet sixteen team and latte the twenty nineteen was ranked in the top ten multiple times but typically between ten and fifteen and had a legitimate chance but didn't get to play in the tournament. I want the march results to. I'm gonna judge on march results. Trust me it's going to be part of the evaluation but he really turned the narrative around really quickly. I mean he went from being. You know easy to notice. There's a wariness over excitement about new recruits will this transfer portal. There shouldn't be awareness. This is there's a wariness about what i could see from barrow and fans who have been through this this march excitement level enough and they're they're a little bit tired of it well. Last year we gave them a reprieve. We gave him no excitement expectations and they went to the tournament and won a game so they. They had a year off from the expectations. I i. I know what you're saying. And the expectations haven't been consistently top five top ten every year. That's not that that would be inaccurate. But you know it's really interesting to watch college basketball. Nah you had two older teams last night. With the exception of subs you had two teams that had transfers. You got a lot of teams that rely on transfers in. This is the this year in the covid years. The all-time transfer portal year and maryland went after it and they last year they went after two and they missed on two or three guys. That would have been the difference between a top fifteen team last year. Preseason and a team that would have been much better And and being what they were Did they missed on carly jones in particular. Who was the runner-up acc player of the year louisville. And that was one. They thought they had and if he had played on that team maryland would have been playing into the second weekend. Potentially they would have been favored. Anyway they would have been a top four seed in the region whether or not they would have gone through. This is something different. But my my point about the recruiting is at some point. recruiting becomes more of an indictment than a measure of success. If you don't have the results to match up with it results if you measure results by tournament success will again the irony there is. I agree with you when you have big time. Recruiting classes are big time. Transfers by the way they're recruiting class in terms of the incoming freshmen. It's borderline top twentyish. Top twenty five ish with the transfers..

"Myron joe. It is one fifty three a. m. eastern time. Where are you right now. I'm in like this abandoned clubhouse thing lucas oil stadium. Like i don't even know if i'm supposed to be here. Myron medcalf covers college basketball for espn and this was his eleventh nc double championship game but it was the one semi quiet place. I could find. I was told by thirty minutes ago that i had like fifteen minutes that all of us kind of had to clear out but hopefully they don't kick me out so you are hidden away in a corner of this football stadium that housed this absurd tournament. And look you've been to. I think ten of these championships before this one. You're not impressed very easily. How would you describe what you saw out on that court tonight. I just think from the start to the finish. It was just a very dominant performance in to me. The only thing. I can think of being boxing fan i am. It's sort of like watching mike. Tyson lose the buster douglas. Now baylor is in buster douglas. But just the sight of someone that he thought was maybe invincible. Losing because gonzaga never had a chance. Taylor was better everywhere. It was clear in the first couple of minutes that unless gonzaga had a miracle. They weren't going to be able to beat this baylor team so it was just stunning to see gonzaga. Not just lose but get dominated like

"Have never in my life been for a game so anticipated. Been just sitting here. Like i cannot believe this is happening and even even as all the talk in the second half is like all right. Uh-huh gonzaga tonight. I honestly like never really felt like ever. I said on the show before this season gonzaga. There's so there's a calming presence about that. I said if they're down ten. I think what i said. It was even if they're down ten with like four minutes left. I'm not panicking. Because they just their so calm cool and collected they were not calm at any point in this game. The moment jalen down four. Nothing in jalen suggs picks up the charging foul. They had like a look in their of lake. What you want to and at no point were even when they cut it to nine. I was like great. You cut it to nine. Like i don't see how you're going to. You cannot stop baylor. so that's cool. You cut it tonight and then snap of a finger. It's back to like seventeen that it was as thorough of an asking. I if they play tomorrow it reminded me a loyal illinois like it's technically upset but like at the same time. Play that game tomorrow. Baylor's kicking the. I'm still taking baylor tomorrow. I'm still taking baylor on wednesday. I'm taking baylor on thursday

But Scott grew cutting down the Nets. Wanna thank God for blessing us with this opportunity tonight? No. The guy's worked really hard and s so happy they get a chance to celebrate. Now with this Same time, Um, feel for coach few and his team because there's such class acts and coach views the Hall of Fame coach and an unbelievable guy, better person than his coach. And, um, you hate when friends aren't feeling good, but, um, a plan was in December 5th. When the game got canceled. We said a If we could make it April 5th and as I told him before the game if we're gonna lose losing to use who I want to lose two so s so much respect for them and what they've accomplished. Our team has been special. Um, last two years, winning his team in the power five. We've been really, really good on there. They're even better people. Four weeks in the bubble. Trust me, I'd tell you if they're not. So, uh, That's what I'm gonna take away. Most from this is thankful the CIA gave us an opportunity to have an N c a a tournament and then thankful that we're able to spend this time in developer deeper relationships with unbelievable guys. 18 years after taking over really down and out program. You had visions of this, But what's it like? I mean, coaching is like being a parent and Christmas time you see the kids opening a present. You see them excited. You're excited and to see the, uh Baylor fans be able to celebrate and cheer to see the city of Waco be able to celebrate and share to see the state of Texas. I mean, look how much great basketball we have from high school au Junior College college, and we haven't won a national championship since 66. So it's long overdue for the state and again just so pleased for all them. We weren't gonna have any regrets with this tournament. We want to leave it all on the court really blessed with the effort everyone gave us tonight. Scott Drew mentioning the team from Texas. They're just the second team ever from Texas to win a national championship. Texas Western did it in 1966. As for Gonzaga, their first lost this season and it comes in the final game of the year there. 35 game win streak is snapped. And they just had no answers for Baylor in the championship match of our college basketball crew, Reese Davis with Seth Greenberg, Jay Bellison, LaPhonso Ellis anytime Gonzaga would run any dribble handoff for any ball screen situation. The bigs were up and diverting the ball handler, which gives you time to be able to recover on the backside. I thought they were outstanding in that phase of the game is the best defense I've seen since the 89 90 UNLV team. I mean, they were open underneath people. They distorted past lanes. I got deflections. They pushed the Gonzaga Out one step further created offense out of the defense. How about this out of the defense to plus 10 offensive rebounds plus 11 bench points, plus 14 and outscore Gonzaga from the three point line by 15 points. They dominate this game. In every aspect. We said they had a rebound the ball, Bella rebounded the ball. We said they had a way with their defense they want with their defense. And they want with a three point shooting. That was an absolute impressive performance by Baylor. Baylor was up 17 in the first half and Gonzaga got it down to 10 at halftime. So you think it 10 is a manageable number? Get the halftime you think, OK, they got it. They got a real shot here. Jared Butler's Whatever opening there was in that door. Jared Butler slammed in the first few plays of the second half. He knocked down to big shots. They're going. That's game there. You can't recover from that. That was a door slamming championship Winning answer. By Jared Butler starts second half Look, There's no guarantees and big 12 tough conference, but if not for the covert pause, I mean, Baber was undefeated for really long time in this season's well, we talked about what watching the game. I mean, I believe that and we talked about it is that without the covert pause, I believe Baylor would have been undefeated. Going into this game. We would have two undefeated teams playing one another. Now they should have played each other in December that game Cove it wound up calling that game off. But that's how good Baylor's been all year long. I just didn't didn't think that the passing and cutting of Gonzaga would be disrupted to that level. When Gonzaga made a cut. It didn't matter because nobody could see them right. They were right. They were forcing their back anytime. Drew Timmy had the ball and would drive a big guy. He lost the ball. There was just so much pressure on them. They couldn't do sort of what they would normally do, and that was not a normal defense they played against All pressure buys time and the ball pressure of Baylor bought all the time to take away those cuts like you were talking about their ability to dominate the ball, finds at the point of attack and push them out and turn ball handles like you, said J. Was dominant. I mean, it was just it was. It was incredible and you're talking about historically good offensive team and we started to see once they started the tournament. Taylor, you look at their numbers in the tournament enforces 16 turnovers a game. They're holding opponents to 25 from the 3 45 to When they're sitting in pressuring the basketball Unless you're just gonna beat a guy and have spacing. There was nothing that.

"What time did you get to bed on saturday night. Three thirty three. I was done working at like one thirty. I just i. I watched the jalen sug shot fifty times. I just i couldn't get over it and i woke up this morning. Still kind of buzzing about it jeff. Porcello is a college basketball insider for espn and he's been covering the tournament from indianapolis us a prisoner of the moment. Jeff that's the phrase that gets thrown around but there are not many moments in sports history like what happened with gonzaga in the final four. You were there just broad historical analysis year. What did we witness. I mean it was the best game i've ever seen in person or on tv and it wasn't a game where the ending masked a you know sloppy but close game. This was just just unbelievable. Basketball for forty. Five minutes. Both teams making shots. No team led by more than seven points the the tension and the butterflies ahead throughout the game. It was just unlike anything. I've witnessed the shot at the end. Just just kind of cap it all off just mentioned that that shot by suggs. Walk us through it from your perspective. What you're seeing. I knew we were good because there was in jalen hands. He's got that magical or he just. He makes them in practice all the time. It's been craziest. Your many's maiden practice where last second shot so. I felt pretty good staring right at it and i was like that's in so it was. It was the best game you know in my you know since i started covering the sport and people compare it to the nineteen ninety-two duke kentucky game. I did not see that. In person. And i was six years old five years old but i i can't imagine there are too many games in the history of the sport. There were better than this.

"And now it's time for after balls. And i want to honor a man who wrote into the washington post in one thousand nine hundred eighty four about elgin baylor is again mckenna told us a time when the paper basically didn't cover black athletes in the city it only covered white aphids to pretend that the white high schools were the only high schools in the city. And this guy. James a clay wrote to the post and he said i've seen just about all of them with the curtains. Georgia's sullivan's kesslers etc. All are good or better than good basketball players but before you do your selecting for all high all prep all star teams this year. Go out and see elgin. Baylor of spin arn. He is the greatest high school basketball player of all time. So forget the unwritten rule and watch him play so as not to do him the great injustice of leaving him off. Don't take anyone's word about him. See them yourselves then if you can leave him off. That's a different story. James a clay two. Oh two six four th street northwest. Those were the days when they people's addresses on the newspaper about that. Man he must. I mean he was he. He didn't even all the other basketball player. It's not like you can watch the mcdonald's game on tv in one thousand nine hundred eighty four so it was good scout too. Yep joel what's your james clay. Well josh mentioned that. I was a college football fan earlier so i thought it was appropriate to Pay respect to the memory of one of college. Football's most memorable characters in program builders howard schnellenberger who died at the age of eighty seven over the weekend so snow burger is probably best known for reviving the football program at the university of miami when schnellenberger arrived at miami and nineteen seventy nine. The hurricanes were on their sixth coach in nine years after lewis. Sabin no relation to nick. That i know of he left miami for army all right so at that point. Miami hadn't won more than six games in a season in twelve years. It's best season had come in. Nineteen forty five. The year it went nine one in one in defeated holy cross in the orange bowl so yeah at that point. There was very little clue. The canes were anywhere near the cusp of greatness and his often been recounted in recent days. Miami administrators had even considered dropping football as losses mounted dipped and schellenberg. Didn't exactly get off to an auspicious start and that first season in coral gables the cames lost three of their first four home games including three point loss in tallahassee not two rival florida state but to division one aa florida and in the turning point that first season and maybe for the whole program came later in the year with miami at three and four the canes were heading into a game against nationally ranked penn state on the first saturday of november to that point the year. Snow in burger and offensive wiz. Who was the coordinator for the undefeated. Nineteen seventy-two miami. Dolphins had gone with mike. Rodriguez as the starting quarterback riga had acquitted himself early. Well given the circumstances namely a pretty awful offensive line. Rodriguez was a good athlete. Miami's first quarterback everett of bench three hundred pounds and he also ran a four point. Seven five forty yard dash so this is all according to miami. I don't know if that time is official. But that's what they say. So whatever and 'cause rodriguez was a sophomore even started some as a true freshman the previous year but schnellenberger knew he wasn't good enough to be penn state. So coach turn to a redshirt freshman guy from western pennsylvania who'd grown up dreaming of playing for joe paterno and the lions. His name was jim. Kelly schnellenberger didn't even ask us coaching staff with their opinion about the quarterback switch. He just went with it. Having seen enough of kellyanne spot duty throughout the season that saturday in state college at the pre-game breakfast four hours before kickoff shellenberger announcer the team. That kelly would start stellar burgers. Said kelly's response wasn't exactly confidence inspiring. He surprised me about probably going to the bathroom and throwing up. I wondered wouldn't the hell is wrong with this kid. Schnellenberger told buffalo news years later asked if he had second thoughts about his decision. Schnellenberger said well. It was too late. Then which knollenberg i didn't know that kelly's nausea was as much a part of his pre game. Routine is breakfast in the end kelly. Validated schnell lemberg belief in him. By throwing for two hundred and seventy eight yards and three touchdowns in miami's twenty six upset of penn state. After the game shellenberger told reporters. We came in with the idea that the lesser of two evils was throwing the ball a sort of testament to the king's offense earlier in the season. A local newspaper written most of this year has been a bomb with a wet fuse running to no avail passing sometimes as few as eleven times a game so from that moment forward a modern passing game would be a staple of the miami program as long as kelly's in the game schnell said we've got us. Kelly style of attack now. This move wasn't the cadillac for immediate turnaround. Miami losses next two games a thirty two nothing blowout top rank alabama and then a forty two fifteen loss to notre dame and tokyo but the case went nine and three the next year and nine into the following season a year that ended with an orange bowl victory over notre dame two years later in one thousand nine hundred eighty three burger the when their first national championship. That would be his last game. At miami shellenberger accepted an offer to coach the south florida based team in the fledgling. Usfl that never materialized and two thousand eleven schnell lindbergh said of leaving miami if you look at it objectively. It was the dumbest thing a human being could do. And schnellenberger wasn't quite able to recreate that same magic elsewhere. He had one ten win season at louisville but finished his tenure there with a losing record and he had a fairly underwhelming year oklahoma. One thousand nine hundred five with the sooners going five five. In one in his final chapter schnellenberger created a whole football program from scratch florida atlantic university guiding the university from division one. Aa division one. He finished his college coaching career. With an overall record of one fifty eight one fifty one in three which goes to show you that one loss records don't always told the full story of someone's contributions to the game but i think the real lesson here is don't little queasiness get in the way of a good thing. So stephan what is your schnell in bulger. Two things about howard schnellenberger number one moustache number two. The thing that caught my attention is Scheduling back to back to back penn state alabama and notre dame in japan. Yeah whoever was doing the scheduling miami back then was You know didn't didn't give him the easiest read. Miami was an independent so they had to cut. I guess they had to. They were like Boise state will play you anywhere you know. Basically the that was their motto so they had to go anywhere man you in japan. All right stephane. What is your james a clay. On saturday night. I was channel surfing during the ncaa's and happened across some playoff college hockey on espn. And then i fell asleep. But when i woke up early on sunday morning they were still playing so i recorded the game to see what would happen. And i'm glad i did. Because it was nuts. In the fifth over time of his regional final after one hundred and forty two minutes and thirteen seconds of play..

"I'm so grateful for all the stuff that you wrote. That has that that testimony has these stories. So thank you. I did it for me. I mean yeah. I was totally that. Because i'm a dc guy and again you talk to these we so many stories. I mean i'd have to go to microfiche in the ninety. S because the post archives the washington post archives the warrant. The stories enough of them in the mainstream papers weren't enough there so afro-american papers covered his exhibitions and would cover elgin's other stuff. Sam lacey the legendary sports writer of the afro american. Who worked until he was one hundred years old and saw an amazing. I mean this guy. He had a life he could tell tell some tales he was a organizer of these exhibition games against white players when after elgin senior year. When elgin wasn't voted on by the newspaper reporters to the all star game. They put together these games because only white players were voted onto the all star game. The all prep all high game. Which was the washington. Post put on sam lacy in an and others in a local promoter put on these games called mixed race battles to get him some claim in the area where he would play white teams and always always went and everything comes together america. America's history was changing. The way basketball was being played his senior year of high school at the same time The way school was structured in his hometown in america was being overhauled. The brown versus board of education came in the final semester of his senior year. A main plaintiff was a spotswood bowling. Which was a classmate of of baylor's at at spin aren't in another basketball player. Spin was like changed the world and definitely change. Dc like few supreme court cases. Ever did the convergence of of the changing worlds of sports and culture and race race in america. All come together with baylor which should dc due to honor elgin baylor memory right like i know you. I'm sure you've got some ideas. So here's my rage. This is where my rage comes out. It makes no sense at all that there is nothing for this guy here. The only thing named for him is genuine. The only thing named for him in washington. Dc is the sole crooner genuine. Whose real name is elgin. Baylor lumpkin ways and bless. I did not know that. Are you serious. Genuine us is from yes. He's a dc native and But other than that like this no park. He went to cardozo here but then he left and never came back. What's what's the excuse for elgin. I mean he made the rest of the world. A notice washington dc. But something has to be done. I mean it just has to be rectified. In is stories. Amazing it is dave mckenna wrote about elgin baylor for defector and washington paper and gallons will put.

"It was an any ice school and in the end it may have helped because he went onto the college of seattle university which wasn't too far away and took them to the final four singlehandedly. Which is an amazing amazing tale. Another really telling aspect of that part of the baylor story is that he goes out to idaho with these two friends of his from dc and then goes to seattle with a totally separate new group of friends from dc. So it tells you a couple of things number one that like baylor didn't want his success to be individual like he wanted to spread it to people that grew up with and then he knew and he saw that he had this opportunity and mother. Maybe this was like a better place. He wanted to give that other folks but also the baylor wanted to feel comfortable that he he didn't actually feel at home in dc because of all the we've talked about all that wasn't available to him but he felt comfortable with the people that he grew up with and people in dc and he wanted to bring he wanted to be in like you wanna part of dc in a place where he could feel more at home right. Yeah and again. I am a sap about baylor and talking to these guys. Like a teammate of his own. He went back and he brought two guys from when you went to seattle. He the two guys that i'd went home and he went back and brought to guys from spring arm. I'll say finger in high school in washington. Dc he went and got two guys another side of greatness before he said to the coaches seattle. If i if. I can bring some guys here. I'll come and the shirk wherever you want. And he went home any shared. You know like the he shared the wealth. And i remember one of the guys telling me about getting a knock on the door and saying do you want to go to elgin baylor of some breaks. You want to go to college come on getting. We're leaving tomorrow. Let's go. I was gonna go to the army and he like all right. I guess we'll go to college and go into the next room and tell them his mom. I get to go to college. Got to play the final four. But i mean he was you know. I talked to him a half a century later. He was still just unbelievably touched. His about how his life had changed from that. Knock on the door and yet that also ended with the black kids getting accused of cheating and the program falling from its heights and that is a running theme in baylor's young life right and and it shaped the way he felt about. Dc and the way he viewed segregation from from the second. He left the city and into his into his career in the nba yet. The seattle program was was put on probation because of the coaches of recruiting. Another spin aren't player. Who would go onto an nba career. They said he that the coach illegally given him a plane ticket to visit the campus. Which you know and every other but like you said like that that pattern is. It doesn't look good on paper for for the white power structure where the two places he goes and brings to their their their their greatest heights. Athletically are then crushed by by the the machine moving forward just a little bit dave. I'm still learning about elgin. Baylor right and like i was reading all the great things you've written about him over the years like i'm just shocked for instance that he was appear wilt chamberlain to me like not only was he appear. He got the best of wilkinson. We'll came and visited him in dc. And i go back to year two thousand eighteen essay in deadspin headline elgin baylor and ready to tell people he was great. And i'm just kind of curious to know. Do you think he wanted to take more ownership of his story later. Years because of how much is reputation suffered with the clippers and working for donald sterling. Because that's who i knew. Elgin baylor is like just sort of this overwhelm. Gm working for the clippers the worst franchise and professional sports. First of all the clippers. Episode is one. I wrote more words about baylor than just about anyone. Maybe dan snyder. Obviously dan snyder. I wrote more worse than anybody in my life. But elgin is number. Two and i never i. I would mention the sense of the clippers. I'd like disregarded that chapter because that's not eligible baylor. He was he was put in a horrible situation and He deserved blame for that. But as far as taking ownership of story. If i may be incredibly honest i think he took ownership of his story because people around him finally said time is running out. If you don't do it do it. Now he was kind of. I don't think he really. He didn't care. I think being called boastful would be like the biggest insult to him. Personally he did not want to come off as a guy who was self centered and talked about himself. Even the around here like the john thompson era his peers. Here you talk to any one of them out elgin like they're you know they shake their head. I like you know they they. They remember seeing a ghost seeing him on the playground. The first time they've never seen anything like it. It didn't come easy to him to to talk about himself and given the life story. Like people like me i would call. I just call every couple years for for a long time a couple of every now and then and just bullying talking about the past and he was very nice to me and he would but it. It definitely He did it for me. he didn't do it for himself. The death of baylor juxtaposed with the death of henry feel like they go together in a lot of ways the sort of overcoming routes and jim crow and not doing it sort of certainly happily or doing it without being angry i mean baylor was so angry at dc. He never went back if he didn't want any part of washington And when he left. Dc to go to idaho. He turned down opportunities to go play at hp because he didn't want to be in segregated environment it had ruined him. It feels like in so many ways and when he got to the nda. There's this story that you account and others have recounted how when the lakers were in charleston west virginia when he was a rookie and a hotel wouldn't give him and other black players on the team rooms. He sat out the game. He was sick of it and the anger is visible in his actions. There was sort of an acceptance in like he. He uses line. That's the way things were you know about about. Why because i like i i would want him to be enraged. I would want him to cause like it. Just you feel bad for humanity to to read about what he endured and he. I remember him saying so. It was that quote from his memoir from that episode in west virginia where his team may hot rod hundley asked him to change his mind about not playing. And baylor says i'm a human being. He said that he told me. I'm not an animal put in a cage. Let out for the show. Yeah i mean that's a wonderful and understandable quote and but he never had that that raid with me. He was always humility and and no boastful nece at all not rage. Nothing just It's not as if he would change much. I guess with the way things turned out he worked with it. He got had dealt a bad hand by most people's standards and took the whole pot on. He did really well in some athletes but also other famous people celebrities politicians. Whatever have that kind of ego and it's upsetting to them. That people don't know how great they were earn. Remember how great they were and it's not nearly as important but he also never won an nba championship. Which is the way that are kind of dumb sports brains kind of categorize athletes and so he had that against him and sort of being talked about in these. Like greatest player ever pantheon of conversations. But when you talk to the folks that grew up with and in dc dave when you talk to his peers in the nba. When you talk to people that you know writers anybody that that saw him. There's no it's hard to think about people that are talked about with such reverence and that's really a testament to both the life well lived and also to his greatness than i think you know it. It makes me weep you to see you being weepy. But the sad thing and and steph mention henry. Aaron is just like so many of those guys in this generation isn't going to be around anymore to tell less. How great elgin baylor was this guy who doesn't want to talk about how great he was. And that's why. I'm so grateful for all the stuff that you wrote. That has that that testimony has these stories. So.

"baylor" Discussed on Slate's Hang Up and Listen

"Available in all states and situations elgin. Baylor had a wonderful life but deserved better. That's the first line of dave began his obituary for baylor who died last week at age. Eighty six baylor was in many ways. The first truly modern basketball player. You could watch him and him alone as far back as the early nineteen fifty s with his jump shot and reverse dunks and see what the sport would become but as mckenna ronin has. Oh bit baylor's early. Life was circumscribed by jim crow. He couldn't play on the fancy all white playground near his black elementary school in washington. Dc he couldn't play in the all white local all star games. He wasn't recruited by the all white local colleges mckenna wrote. I think all the time about baylor getting on a train out west from dc and eighteen fifty four forced to leave town everything he knew behind chase greatness which he would surely find far from home. That image tells me so much about what was wonderful about him. And wrong with our country dave mckenna wrote about baylor for defector the website he co owns he's also written about baylor for washington city paper and grantland neither of which he co owns and only one of which still exists dave mckenna. Welcome to the show. Thank you very much. I'm very sad. let star with that train ride west when elgin baylor left washington. Dc can you explain where he was going and why he was going there. Yeah he. He was going to college of idaho in caldwell idaho the middle of nowhere proverbial middle of nowhere. Because no as you as you said. He was ignored by an locally. He the know that even though he had only a few weeks before the nba draft of nineteen fifty four. He played against gene shue. Who would now be called a lottery. Pick and going a hall of fame career and he had outplayed him in one. Mvp of the tournament a high school player against the college senior and one of the best college seniors in the country and yet Was ignored by the university of maryland. Were gene shue went and georgetown university which would go on to have this reputation as quite a progressive school and george washington university every school every local team with a With the basketball program they they were years away from even considering a black player and even on the national scene. He got no serious. He got no scholarship offers. So another dc guide named a warren williams who had been a friend of his on the playground and it was also a multi sport athlete. A football and basketball met from the washington. Post all met being all star had a family friend who was a harlem globetrotter who heard about a college in idaho that was recruiting would have would take all comers regardless of race and was putting together. An athletic program warned called up tied told the coach about. I got this guy back home. Who is the best basketball player in on the planet. And what he's thinking he's an old bring him along. Because of the football coach was also basketball coach at the school. And next thing you know. Baylor is on a train to idaho which he had never had never been outside of the city. The furthest away had been to the virginia border west virginia west virginia border. Not which is not too far from. Dc to visit a relative. That's the furthest had ever been from home and next thing you know. He's a trained idaho. Some two thousand miles away. I'm very touched by almost everything about a baylor story. But that image of a black kid in nineteen fifty four getting on a train to go to idaho. It just kills me. I kinda wanted to follow up on this because you say that they were baylor in. His friends were constantly aware of their status. I guess for lack of a better term. Anomalies in idaho right and that but it didn't it didn't feel isolating. You said he wrote in his autobiography. It fills if ww. And i have wondered into a private and exclusive members only club but rather than feel intimidated or excluded. Like i do in dc. I feel invited. Wit made idaho so inviting him. You know idaho now is land. Were mark furman escapes to after the oj. Trial it's that's my dried. How yet these guys. They had five guys on the basketball team. And idaho was the maybe the white state in the union at the time were black. And we're treated wonderfully to a man. I talked to three of them through the years. And we're treated one and my only guess is that it was like a four. They were foreign exchange students. Basically they were they were italian. The to to the people of idaho they were it was an the novelty and also obviously they brought newfound success to the school. They went undefeated in. The basketball team was undefeated. The first time in in the history of the conference that any school had had an undefeated conference record and the first time obviously in college has record so i mean i think those two things maybe that they the novelty and the obvious skills and talents these. They introduced a new style of basketball to to the people and i think that's the combination of why they were treated but again no episodes of racism. You know that they can recall. And none of them have recounted anything but being treated wonderfully like the remember being stereotyped or this better word of typecast parties when people would ask them to teach eligible and warn both got asked to teach kids how to dance and they took it very sweetly. They said that it was from a place of sweetness that they were asked and because they had moved the idahoans had never seen and yet it was very very uplifting very sweet tail to talk to them about this time but it didn't end totally sweetly though they had that one great season actually lost in the noaa championship and they didn't go back for a second year right correct. The college of idaho effectively canceled the basketball program. They eliminated the scholarships after one season is great season and that followed a sports illustrated story about this tiny little school to college via ho. That's has all of a sudden this incredible program in you read between the lines. It's like it starts out like you think it's a positive story but between the lines saying hey they only did it because they let inferior academic black kids in blankets without without the proper records. I'm sure that national publicity is what did it. That's why they yanked they pull the program pulled the plug on it. Which is you know. It ended up being baylor. Probably i think. He was unstoppable at that point and he could have gone right to the nba. Had at that point of had had been allowed. It ended up being. he likely would not have gotten. It was an any ice school and in the end it may have helped because he went onto the college of seattle university which wasn't too far away and took them to the final four singlehandedly..

"Um How is this team as good as and I'm just going to say is this team is good as Gonzaga. Is it good is Baylor Is this team is good as Indiana Excuse me, Iowa. Or and Illinois. Mm. Think mission is good as any team in the big 10 farm. Not, um, I've seen everybody numerous times. Now. I think there's good as anyone, the big 10. Uh, they're strong and all phases of the game. Um They they don't. They don't want at least yet. Haven't shown any weakness. Let's not going would that continues? They haven't had entry. That's not going would with that, because the kids They need to keep the top seven guys together. They're you know, Coach is playing a very tight rotation. If people haven't really, you know they're playing like 7.5 a God. So you need to make sure that all those guys they help because you lose one. It could really change your rotation. Um Gonzaga. Gonzaga is a different beast right now. I think Gonzaga is just a head above everyone, Um They are officers juggernaut. I think they're the first team ever score. 85 points plus in the 1st 12 games of the season. Which means if you're averaging 85, Plus you've quite Triple digits quite a few times. They can absolutely score the basketball and on the flip side. They do a good job guarding. But what they're saying is we just love story. You've got to stop us. You got to keep up and no one has been able to do that. So I put them Don't know ahead above everyone. Baylor Baylor, Maybe. The best defensive team I've seen this year with mission a real real close. It might be won and won it when we're talking about best defensive team. So, you know, Uh, you know, we still have a lot of basketball to go. Uh, we still need to stay healthy. I still think teams are gonna get better. Um, we still have to navigate this endemic. Uh, you know, you know, and I give cultures credit for managing the stopping gold nature. That they've been.

"So it seems like all of these things could totally go the wrong way? You know a coach being too competitive or literally smacking an assistant coach and making players smack each other. Why so many people continue to love this guy? I think it's a genuine niceness about him and the reason we've been number one is excuse me for the coffee is because we've been able to focus on each and you don't think of a basketball coach usually as a nerdy guy right like usually. They're tough students. Demand toughness and rule with an iron fist. But that's not schedule. He's he's a little different. He would fit right into. Leave it to beaver. Scott drew has a pretty interesting background. He's from a very well known basketball family. His father homer drew is a legend Valparaiso. Indiana you know took that program and made it nationally known back in when his son. Bryce was playing for them and you know ran the play to win at the Buzzer against old miss. It's a play. You see an allotment in basketball now where they throw it deep and the big bang catches it and and in one motion catches in pitches it to a guard and then drives hit the shot to beat Ole Miss. It's jackets it's one of the most famous shots I think in basketball and Bryce played in the NBA played for the Bulls. And Yeah so it's A. It's a well known basketball family and it seems like maybe the main thing that defines Scott drew is his relentless self belief and a heavy dose of optimism. And that's why People Love College basketball. That's why coaches lose their hair and But Anyway I'll sleep located night. Thank goodness for that mystery. It's holding up pretty well up top. You're you got some pretty good coverage all we mentioned this. This is the second time you've been and it seems like that. Self Belief led him to a coaching position that very few people would have accepted. Cj can you just take back to what happened with the Baylor Basketball Program back in two thousand and three? Dave Bliss was the coach and Patrick Dennehy and Carlton. Dotson were two of his players and they bought weapons and would go and practice firing these weapons and some point. Dotson got mad at didn't he and murdered him the murder of Baylor basketball player. Patrick Dennehy is one of the most tragic stories in sports. It's a bizarre story. And then once you get toward you know Patrick being murdered it gets even crazier because of the attempt to cover up that ensues dove blessed. That had Patrick. Dennehy key was not on scholarship and Dave. Bliss was basically paying for his tuition. Dave Bliss after all this came out to try to like covered up told family members of another player to lie to investigators. He told his team to lie about saying that the Patrick and he was a drug dealer. And that's how he was paying for his tuition was with his drug money and basically any which way you can screw up a program. Dave was cheating behind the scenes and then with this situation just handled it as poorly as you can like. You should be remorse seeing what happened and checking on everybody and he was basically just trying to save his butt and so the NCAA came in and gave Baylor as tough a penalty as you will ever see in terms of recruiting restrictions. And one thing that they did that. I'm not sure I've ever seen with another power. Five program is bailer. Couldn't even play non conference games in the two thousand five two thousand six season. This is a basketball program that nobody wanted to touch at that time except me. He's got drew. What is he told you about why he wanted that job? He's a very religious person and I think the religious component of the school was probably something that pulled him there. I really felt when you go there and I mean I knew it was going to be a process. I didn't know we beyond probation as long as we're on probation in no we would only get a half season one year but at the same time mean. We feel that go somewhere. You're worried about anything like that. You as going and his father homer told me. I don't think there's ever been a worse situation to go into. But this goes back to Scott's competitiveness and like one of his assistants. Told me at one point. If you want Scott to be passionate about wanting to do something you just gotTa tell him. He can't do it and so I'm sure anyone that Scott talked to about that job at the time was probably saying Scott like wait man like your career is on a good trajectory. You are doing a good job at Valpo. You Help Your Dad. Build that program way and another job is gonNA come. Don't take this one. And that's probably all he needed to hear. And how did he go about rebuilding that team? Both start with recruiting and and Scott has always been a really really good recruiter. He felt like there were plenty of guards in Texas and there. I mean he was right. I mean there's so much talented Texas. He felt like he could get enough enough guards. Texas to have town tobacco roots even if he wasn't getting the first options right and then early on. He was recruiting big men from overseas. That was kind of his his idea. And then eventually. He got to the point where he was recruiting. Mcdonald's all Americans with it put it down to spin baseline score by a big time in recruiting some big time talents. Once they got it rolling follow jammed for Baylor.

"So you've had a number of chances to sit down with Baylor head. Coach Scott drew first of all. How does he like to get his players? Hyped up any number of creative ways. He had one of his assistants. Go out and buy a like metal trash can and he would have him bang the trash. Can I like noise? The speed with which he says his his words and gets his guys charged up it's something to behold and something to see. My energy can be a strength also wrote people the wrong way at times when they want to be the lifestyle. You calm down early. In his time at Baylor he felt like his guys. They were just kinda down before not really charged up like you wanted him to. So he had the guys lineup. On two different sides there was an assistant coach lined up across him any reached back any smacked him in the face in. This coach was from Pittsburgh. Kind of a a tough dude. Right was like Whoa. What was that like? He stuck his hands up like he was ready to to fight. So Scott told him slapped me back so he slapped him back and then he told everybody on the team at the guy in front of you in this slap them back I mean with generations say change. Yeah I mean nowadays. You can't slap chop wait. When's the last time.
