Well, yeah, but there are days that you go and you're like, oh... Just existing is a sign that, oh, god damn it, me being a smartass is really bad for my karma, I guess. So, yeah, so we just, we had a couple things, you know, just what, what? Well, it was kind of, there's a TikTok trend going on right now. That's what it was. And it's, what is something that you've, that you don't like anymore or you hate now that you're older? But we talked about how that's super negative, so, like, how our perspectives have changed as we get older. I feel like that's a much better question, like, what kind of perspectives have changed for you? Like, what do you appreciate now compared to when you were a kid? Yeah, and the obvious things that came to my mind were, like, naps, you know, like, I never understood why all these old people always wanted to make me take a nap. I love taking a nap. Is it good? I can see that. I like to nap now. Something tells me you never had to tell Ben to take a nap. Oh, yeah, you did. Really? And then he would come out two hours later and be like, I slept, and he had colored his entire body with marker. Yeah, kind of like how he stays up all night on his Switch. Yeah, so, fun fact, people with autism actually have really strange sleep schedules and have a really hard time sleeping when people should normally be sleeping. My therapist just told me that because she asked me how my sleep's been. Well, what's the solution when you're a kid that has to go to school? Give him a gummy. Oh, to get him to adjust the... The CBD, CBG, CBN ones? Because the sleepy ones. Because I gave him one, and then the next night he was like, Mom, I'm going to need another gummy. He's 12. And he said, I slept so well last night. He said every night he had those, he actually slept all night. He gets anxious in the middle of the night and starts worrying about shit, and then is awake and he can't go back to sleep. I relate to that. Yeah, I think... When he was little, he just would go, Mom, when he would wake up. Like once he was like one, about one and a half, Mom. And then if I wouldn't answer, Mommy, Mommy, Jeffer, Jeffer, and it'd be like 2 a .m. What do you want? I want to watch ammo. No, it's bedtime. Go to sleep. It is nighttime for everybody. Elmo's in bed. It's dark out. I don't know, living in Virginia, compared to here anyway, I mean, we're much further south. I feel like it's a lot more dark out in the winter. Like you would be awake until it's dark. Okay, so you would think that, right? But I swear to you that Texas is the darkest state I've ever lived in. What do you mean? I don't know. There's a kind of darkness in Texas that they didn't have in Virginia. We had street lights. There was lights everywhere. Oh, yeah. No, we're just so spread out. I know. But I remember thinking that when I moved to Virginia at 18 years old, I remember the first night I drove by myself, I was like, it's like it's five o 'clock because there's a freaking street light like every five feet. And I'm not exaggerating. On the highways, on the bridges, even in the tunnel, being in the tunnel, the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel that goes under the water, that tunnel is so well lit. You know what that was? That was the light contractor that sold a guy on way too many fucking lights and made billions. Probably. They're like, well, my estimate says that we need to have approximately three meters of light, blah, blah, blah. Probably. For every mile, we need eight lamps or 80 lamps instead of 20 or I don't know how many lights per mile. Is that a thing? But it probably is. It probably is. It probably is a thing. And somebody in Virginia at the state level was like, we're going to require these. Yeah, because it's just not like the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. It's the entire fucking state. Like even in the mountains. It's weird. I wonder if the guidelines they created were based on somebody making some money. Oh, I guarantee it. He's like, oh, no, we're going to require one extra light post per half mile. And it sounds like a smart business person. Let's play some balls, son of a... You know, that kind of thing. Whatever. I liked the old 1930s style accent you did. Oh. Yeah? Yeah. It was cute. We're going to go to the fair. Like that. Yeah. I never understood why people talk like that. It was an actual dialect that was created and I don't remember what it was. And that and the kind of like that showcase announcer kind of, you know, welcome. Yeah. It was instead of having no accent, they created an accent to not mimic any accent. Yeah. I guess that's true. That's how it felt. Yeah. How it feels. How it feels. So, all right, but that was just the way everybody talked. No, they didn't talk like that. I know. Just on TV. You know, that's what it was, though. It was just like I... Your barber didn't fucking talk like that, let me tell you. No, they didn't. Because you had barbers back then. People have barbers now. No, but I mean, like, I don't know what I meant. I don't know what I meant there. It's fine. But we also had that realization that you don't really think about this. That children really get told what to do every single minute. Yeah, they do. They're only doing the things that they have permission to do. We have the opposite as adults. Yeah. We can do everything except what is in the laws telling us we can't. But we had very few options as a young child, and I do appreciate how I can pretty much do what I want, aside from the confines of society and all that economic struggle and stuff. But I can choose to do pretty much what I want, but that's based on specific laws of no. Whereas a child is just like, I guess I'll do this right now, because that's the only one thing I'm allowed to do right now. That's a big difference, and I wonder at what age do you think that that starts to change? That they start to realize that? No, that we start to actually start making decisions about our time spent. You were much younger than I think most people because you just did whatever the fuck you wanted. Who, me? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Where is Jin? She's three miles away. We just got a phone call from the church. I'm making up that story, but it's plausible. Oh, we'll get to me in a minute. yeah, So, I think as soon as you start to have free time, like this concept of free time. But free time really only meant one of five things that you could do, like you could pick up a book or you could go do this, I mean, in a structured environment like preschool or whatever. Yeah. I think about me being home with my mom when I was little. Like I definitely had a schedule that she made me go by. Like I had to get up and have breakfast. I was always the first one awake with my dad anyways, like 5 a .m., but, you know, she would wake me up and I'd be awake, I'd get dressed, we'd take Aaron to school, we'd come home if we didn't have to run to the grocery store or something. And then, you know, usually I'd watch Wizard of Oz or Gremlins, and then I would take a nap, have lunch, take a nap, and then I'd get up and I'd use... Or if I didn't watch TV, I'd go play in my room or I'd play outside. Like, I guess I had the freedom to do as I pleased in between like school time, taking Aaron to school, getting home and taking Aaron to school, and go and take and eat lunch. What age is this? Three, four. Jesus. I couldn't tell you my daily schedule as a three -year -old. What do you mean they didn't know you had autism? No. They didn't! I'm just kidding. I'm sorry if that offends anybody with autism. I'm looking back, like, how did they... I had to have that schedule. Like, there was something. There was something really wrong with her. That they should have understood that this person is different, and we should probably, you know, seek out, look for some help in this panhandle Florida town. So do you want me to talk about what I appreciate now as an adult? Yeah. Yeah, what are we doing? I really appreciate myself. So I know that kind of sounds like super conceited, but like we were just talking about, I was a weird little kid. I had a lot of imaginary friends. I had a treehouse that my dad built me where I had a swing up. You had to walk up a ladder, and I had a swing up there and a table. I would spend hours up there alone. I caught snakes as a kid and chased people with them. I would find dead animals in our... We had like an acre where our house was, and I would find dead animals sometimes and give them funerals. And I was very young doing all this stuff, four or five years old, even younger. There's no way I had that kind of freedom as a four -year -old. I had so much freedom, and I think it was because I was so different. My mom was like, I don't know what the fuck to do with her. Yeah. Well, that's fair. But I did have a schedule as a kid. I remember it very clearly that I would wake up at like 5 a .m. My dad and I would have some coffee together, and then, yes, I would drink coffee as a little kid. It was mostly milk and sugar. And then I would have... Still how she takes it. Yeah. I would have breakfast with Aaron, and then my mom and I would take them to school. We'd come home. I'd do whatever for a few hours before I had a tuna fish sandwich. I ate the same thing every day as a child for lunch. A touch of the tis of... With Cool Ranch Doritos. Still to this day, Cool Ranch Doritos. The sandwich changed. It's ham and cheese. Or bologna. I like tuna salad, though. Well, yeah, of course. With Doritos on it. And then I would take a nap. And then I would wake up, repeat, and then have dinner. I would put myself to bed at like 9, 10 months old. I learned how to crawl and get into my crib so I could put myself to bed. You were just creating some boundaries for yourself that early. You were like, yeah, no, it's bedtime. I got tired when my parents would have people over. My mom said that they would... My grandmother would... My nana would put me down, or my aunt Julie, or whoever had me, or my dad, to play. And 10 minutes later, they'd turn around, and I'd be crawling down our hallway to go to my room to try to get into my crib to go to bed, because I was done with people. Yeah, that's probably what it was. It was. You were overstimulated. Absolutely was done. And looking back on it, you were overstimulated, and you were removing yourself from the situation. I gotta go recharge my batteries. Yeah, there's a Christmas video of me in 1988, and there's a point in it where... So you're four. Yeah, my aunt comes for Christmas morning, my aunt Julie, I love her so much. She's pretty awesome. But she gives me my presents, and I loved getting stuff from aunt Julie, because she still does have fabulous style. So when I was little, even that young, I knew clothes from aunt Julie were going to be super cool. I was going to be excited to wear them. So I go to open it, and it was like a play makeup set. And I slap it in the video, and I turn to my mom, and I was like, you lied. You said this was going to be close. And that time, my uncle Jimmy, my cousin Morgan's dad, he comes over, and he says, Jenny, here's your other two presents. And it was close. Oh, God. But it was because of that change. I was expecting something, and I didn't know how to handle the change. Yeah, and most kids are just excited to get a present, but you had already thought about this present, and what it was going to be, and how it was going to work out with your other presents. Yes. We just recently started watching South Park, and I'm reminded of the episode in season one, or maybe two, one. We're still on episode one, I think. We're in season two. Oh, we are? Okay, well, Cartman's birthday party, and he chose what gifts everybody was going to give him. Was going to get him. And I wonder if Cartman is less of an asshole and more of a tism. I think he is a lot of tism. Well, I don't know if it was written that way, but - Right? That was me as a kid. I would say at church, I would ask questions like, you just said that we're supposed to love everybody. God loves everybody, but we're not supposed to like gay people. Like I had questions that doesn't... That to somebody who is years more intelligent emotionally than that adult already thought of. That's how I see it now, is I had more emotional intelligence at four and five years old than this 30 year old man teaching us. And so like, no, that's not it. And you know, I'd get in trouble and I'd have to go sit in the fucking corner because I asked an improper question. Yeah, but if Jesus loves everyone, wouldn't he love everyone? And when they say, love your neighbor, wouldn't they mean - All your neighbors. All of your neighbors? Yeah. Hate is taught. It is taught.

As we head through the remainder of the evening and into the overnight mainly clear skies and cold temperatures the in 20s by early tomorrow morning. It's not going to start very windy on Tuesday, but by mid morning into the afternoon could be looking at wind gusts upwards of 30 to 35 miles per hour even stronger in mountains. the Combination of gusty winds and temperatures only in the 30s will give us wind chill factors or feels like readings in the 20s throughout the day. Wednesday morning feels like reading single digits to teens. Coldest that we've seen since February. Highs for Wednesday upper 30s to middle 40s. "The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Kyle will start their mid -span westbounders at a stop we've got one stopped a disabled truck right lane blocked left lane not moving as they're trying to get that poor soul off the bridge you still have three lanes going eastbound if you're trying to get over to Ocean City for the big music festival but right now westbound is coming from Stevensville you're gonna be in delays in fact nothing moving right now maybe just now beginning a very slow roll westbound on the Chesapeake Bridge elsewhere in Maryland on the Capitol Beltway the outer loop ramp to go east on Route 50 the John Hansen Highway that's exit 19a with the right side blocked by the crash at last report 270 exceedingly 270 sluggish spur I should say exceedingly sluggish leaving the Capitol Beltway's inner loop heading toward Democracy Boulevard the workers over on the right side those delays stream back onto the inner loop clogging the left side if you're staying to the right to head up the hill toward Old Georgetown Road you are actually moving very well on Georgia Avenue the earlier crash was southbound through Glenmont near Randolph Road hopefully that has been taken care of by now on the Virginia Beltway doing very well no sign of any work zones in our usual spot between Georgetown Pike and the Donles Toll Road that's a that's a nice smooth ride 95 southbound we've got the work before Lorton it's blocking the right side and beyond that you've still got some dribs and drabs of congestion through Garrisonville and through Falmouth but otherwise no other delays noted on the rails right now blue and yellow metro rail service suspended

In Maryland, the work zone expanded has now on 50 eastbound starting at 704 but moving to a point inside the Beltway near 410. Now you're getting by in just one single lane to the left on 50 getting to and beyond the Beltway. On 50 east after the Bay Bridge, nothing in your way there, and 95 in the Baltimore Washington Parkway, each running well between the Beltways and up and down 270, all is quiet. In fact, around the Beltway both in Maryland and Virginia, things are running pretty freely so far. On 66 westbound after the arousal tunnel work zone has set up, you're getting by single file to the left. But beyond that, all the way up to Haymarket and points west, you are in good shape. "But the news you care about most is what happens around Washington. We have more reporters covering more local stories live every day. WTOP News. Traffic and weather on the 8th to Ian Crawford in the Mississippi Traffic Center. All in all, a pretty smooth ride right now, Stephanie, though don't let that lull you into a false sense of security. We still some have less than sure footing a lot of the roadways as the rain continues to overspread, especially to the south and east along the Capitol Beltway. Everything else, though, is in pretty good working order on the Beltway itself. No reported delays Maryland in or Virginia. To Virginia we go. 95 southbound. We had one stopped on the ramp to Garrisonville Road. Exit 43. That ramp was open and unclear whether that disabled vehicle is even still there. What is most certainly there is the crash activity southbound 95 in the through lanes right before the Rappahannock Bridge. River Now we've got some flares over on the left side blocking that left lane, but still staying center cut to get past the crash activity in the through lanes southbound 95 approaching the Rappahannock River Bridge. Local lanes are unaffected as you try to make those ramps for Falmouth and for Fredericksburg. 66 between Market and the Roslyn Tunnel. Roslyn Tunnel he tried to say through rented lips. No reported issues there. In Maryland still with the blockage outbound Suitland Parkway at Forestville Road. Wouldn't be surprised to find this is an investigation. Now lanes blocked remain and the diversion is at Forestville Road. Take that south to access the beltway. 95 BW Parkway running without delay. 50 between the Bay Bridge and the Beltway. Northbound traffic on North Capitol Street has been quite heavy and slow getting past this crash near R Street. I believe that continues to be the case. may They have made some progress here because the delay is a bit less than it was a while ago. But northbound 395. You still have the broken down truck crowding the right lane before the third street tunnel. Around the Beltway all is and in Virginia. In Virginia 395 and 95 each running without delay. And all's quiet on both ways. Maryland 270 in great shape both directions moving quite well on both 95 of the Baltimore and Washington Parkway as well as on 50 out to the Bay Bridge. "Start with the Bay Bridge. We've been telling you about it for a while. You've got about a six mile delay on the eastbound side. Folks trying to reach the beach, you're going to have some slowing to get there on the westbound side. No reported problems, so you should be good if you're making your way back around the Capitol Beltway. You've got some slowing in the Tysons area, some just volume delays as you make your way around. No major concerns there on 95 through Virginia. Your slowing starts at Lorton, heavy across the Occoquan. You're heavy actually Woodbridge, Dale City, through down to Triangles when you're going to get your first spot where you're getting actually back up to speed. Slows again right before Aquia Harbor. On the northbound side, just some amount of delays through Triangle. 66, there were some earlier concerns in the Gainesville area. You still may see some slowing around that spot. That's paul turner a professor emeritus in architectural history at stanford. He's the author of frank. Lloyd wright and san francisco a book. That's as much about the projects that didn't get built as the ones that did frank. Lloyd wright actually designed close to thirty projects for the bay area and they include some of his most unusual and then really amazing of buildings for example. His first skyscraper was designed for market street in san francisco. But right never got the commission. I san francisco skyscraper just as he never got a commission to design another bay bridge in the late nineteen forties. Right was competing for projects all across the country. A bay area engineer and fan of rights suggested he throw his hat in the ring for proposed second bay bridge. If there was some project that he found interesting he would do the design and then just hope it would get bill and he could promoted. You'd hoping we'll get that was in nineteen forty nine and right would spend the rest of his life the last decade trying to win over decision makers in california because he fell in love with his own proposal which he called the butterfly bridge the structure had the form of the action wings of a butterfly in reinforced concrete news. It's beautiful sculptural form when you look at the drawings that he did. I can't say. I see the butterfly in the butterfly bridge. I say well this is a family program. Okay from overhead. We don't think it's gonna work it's too radical and very much but no thanks exactly and of course no bridge was was was built at all they ultimately they decided it wasn't necessary because a few years later people started talking about barred under the bay and so that became the solution to this traffic. But even as he neared the end of his life right never stopped trying to sell his bridge here. He is in his mid eighties making a pitch on k. With more this morning. Here is Paul Staley these past months have felt like an exploration of the relationship between the invisible in the visible and navigation from the unseen to the scene. There have been paradoxes in the midst of this. Millions of us disappeared from view as we sheltered in place. But then, as pedestrians and shoppers, we have never been more aware of each other's presence. We managed to disappear and you become acutely visible at the same time, and those of us who have had the time to walk around our neighborhoods rather than just drive through them have come to appreciate how much familiarity can obscure the world around us. We have realized that things can become invisible, not because we can't see them, but precisely because we see them too often. We also know that things that don't exist are by definition invisible. But the absence of something still leaves a mark. We have no universal health care in this country, and we could see the evidence of that every day in this statistical record of caseloads and deaths. At the same time. Many of our fellow citizens believe that they have seen things that aren't there. These are the conspiracy theorist to create a web of connections and then try to convince others that they have detected something Others cannot see. We have been sorted out between those who can work invisibly from the safety of home and those whose jobs compel them to go out into the world visible and vulnerable. Furthermore, in a segregated society, the lives of people who circumstances are different than your own, have always been hard to see. Now, those on the privilege side of that divide have receded even further from view. In the end. Oh, nothing new has been revealed All these deaths, the ones with names and faces as well as those that are only numbers to us have exposed things that were always there. Above all else. This is morning edition from NPR News. I'm Sasha Pfeiffer and I'm Rachel Martin. Good morning. There is a reckoning a foot in the U. S. Military President Biden is expected to visit the Pentagon today just as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a massive review of extremism within the force. Austin has called for a so called stand down a pause in operations in order to understand the scope of the problem of extremism, which is more urgent after it was revealed that veterans were part of the January 6th attack on U. S Capitol. NPR's Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman is with us this morning. Hi, Tom. Hey, Rachel. So there's going to be the stand down within the next 60 days. What exactly does Secretary Austin hope to accomplish here? He wants a couple of things. First of all, Let's get an idea of the scope of the problem and then ways to deal with it. So Secretary Austin ordered military leaders to spend one training day discussing with the troops the importance of their oath of office to support and defend the constitution. To be aware of any unacceptable behavior, such as advocating violence or actor participation and hater. Supremacist groups also ways to report suspected behavior. One of this, of course, again was driven by the participation of veterans in that capital insurrection and NPR analysis found that it's some 15% of those under investigation by the FBI were former military Rachel. I was at the Capitol during the riot and talked to a few of veterans, including a member of the proud boys. They're labeled an extremist group by the FBI in this guy told me that he served two tours in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division. So again, a number of veterans here well So you said Part of this big part of it is understanding scope of the problem of extremism within the U. S military. How exactly can they measure that? Well, Do you get statistics? First of all in Austin himself acknowledged. It's a problem getting those statistics now top military leaders of trying to get numbers about extremism. How many were kicked out of the military? How many recruits I've turned away? For extremist ties, and it's proving to be difficult. So far. All I've been able together is a few statistics. The Marine Corps told me that in the last three years they found 16 cases of substantiated extremist behavior. Mostly postings on social media, but no sense at this point, whether any were kicked out. Also, the FBI told the Pentagon that last year they'd opened about 143 investigations. Involving mostly former military members. And of that about half had to do with domestic extremism. And that's about all we know so far. So, Tom, How did they distinguish extremism for from political ideology? Or maybe in this case, it's one of the same. I mean, we all know President Trump retweeted conspiracy theories and was consistently Evasive, Shall we say in condemning hate groups and the writers that storm the capital that day did so in his name, right? This could be difficult in some conservative commentators have questioned all this is maybe being anti Trump. Pentagon officials say this is not about who you voted for, or your political beliefs.
