"Lineup. And I know proffered and bell you know have you know had better days but? Other than Solano and Stransky there's really nobody in the giants line a WHO could crack the as lineup right now in Solano having a much better year I. Mean. Camp gets on quite a bit second base what Solano's hitting almost five hundred you know fifteen straight games hitting and stransky versus. Any outfielder out there because he plays anywhere I would say he might crack that lineup but really nobody else and you know the pitching on the as obviously better. So this is this is a case where the as are just extremely. Higher level and you know other than last year in a how far back you have goes where the as were. So dominant over the giants and the giants. You Know I. Remember the as Kinda. Wanted to be the giants. They wanted that big payroll they wanted that ballpark well, no, the giants won't be as 'cause they're going edit in an analytic way and trying to do the things the as kind of helped events, and it's going to be a long journey because this is an organization that was built on scout since. Brian Sabin. Bruce Bochy, doing the way they did and they did it very successfully but now it's the new wave and they're really far behind. Yeah, that's a good point. I I honestly going from the age facing the angels line-up to face in the giants lineup that's going to be A. Fairly Stark Difference Henry. If you want predictions, I think the same thing I'm GonNa. Say His as take two of the three because my nyas been so shaky but. Yeah, they can piggyback and pretty easily if he gets in trouble early as have plenty in the bullpen so on coming off a day off. It could be a sweep. John's answer was so long I forgot that I asked for predictions map. Three cents I mean Guzman was pretty tough last time. Not sure as a rough outing couple nights ago against a Dylan Bundy I. Know a little bit different but they've had some trouble against starters on early goings I think they've had four games where they haven't scored until. The Middle Four fifth sixth inning against start bitching so that definitely started safar. I ought to go giants two out of three for a couple of reasons just one the crazy nature of this series over the years. And also, the giants are finally committed to putting a belt Ubon Crawford in Longoria out there every day and that really I mean they're doing it not for the offense they're doing it for the defense and So I'm just going to be contrary and I had a question for Matt that has nothing to do with anything regarding the series Matt Matt as a young dude. If you don't, you can't you know I mean I think you're you're in your twenties right still now third clearly. You're one of that new breed who actually liked type standing up, which is actually I hear it's wonderful for your posture in your back, and actually we have older people at the chronicle are like before we had to start working at home who copy editors who are in their fifty s.

"Right now. I have giants questions by go ahead for you guys I only pay attention. I'll be honest to giants in in the as our What is going on with Kappler? I keep seeing headlines about decisions and where is he has a manager right now the. For what they are trying to accomplish what kind of job is he doing? Well I mean first of all he he came into the job with the you know the Q. Rating of Godzilla I mean we already had three strikes against him. And then he made like you know he's made some questionable pitching decisions he I mean he went and Cueto would throw a no hitter and he lost it in the six anyone underpants lost a ball in the sun and and Cueto kept giving it up and he had a bunny not not abundant. What do you call? It are something on his big toe and he was in clear pain and he led him in a cap. Let him stay in and then I just internally at a bomb and the giants ended up winning that game but. There, he might have left quite. Oh, into long. And then the next day Kevin Guzman who actually did throw out the quality start John. GALS. Men was pitching. Shutout into the seventh inning I think it was and You know after eighty pitches, he took him out An and claimed that. It was because he had been up and down seven times and it was a hot day and the you know the fans didn't really by that. So he left the game and then it all kind of went kabalu he brought Tyler Rogers. Rogers gave up a three-run bomb to AJ pollock and then they lost and and then with Logan Webby kept them in. You know after throwing thirty six pitches in one inning seventy pitches in three, and so he's gotten some grief for his Pitch Management and it's just it. It's because he that was his the knock against him in Philly so we already came in with that reputation. You Know I. Think. He's done an okay job given the fact that he has no no experience in his bullpen. The organization purposely decided that they weren't gonNA. Let starters go deep into games to start the season. You know the lineups lineups he's written. Ed Been Okay. I. Mean he got some grief for. Sticking with hunter pants you know too long and intense comes up and you know basically wins the game for them the other night in Houston so I think it's kind of too early to say, I don't know what to get accomplished this season what I mean they they're still rebuilding phase obviously, pretty much everyone makes the play offs says here is that the focus or is it relate just get an experience in a short season for all these guys going forward? Well, it's a fine line between rebuilding and having the other guys play out their careers I mean they got all these championship. folks who have two or three rings and Santa all belts and.

"And he you know he still hasn't been suspended I mean he on I l. when he just finally after like weeks got his appeal heard and you know he got knocked down to five games, which is now actually a game less than Laureano. Why? Why did Laureano get you know get his so so quickly and Did. Did the as want him to serve it against the giants because it was like a good time to serve I think the as would like him to be serving at during interleague play. So giants and then they've got Arizona coming up next week. So whatever the amount of the suspension on a highly suspect, it will get knocked down from six to four. They wanted it not against the division and I think MLB does look at that incident and understand clearly what happened there was an instigator, the Astros hitting coach Alex Cheung and. On a really what's pretty much provoked into that and I think the fact that the appeal is being heard quickly and the suspension might be served in games that don't necessarily kill the as in potentially in the division Maybe an indication of the fact that the League is going like, yeah, you know what? Not Not really this guy's fault shouldn't have done and corona virus age. The safety protocols are hugely clear severe punishment that will not be paraded based on a shortened season but in this case, there's absolutely No question who started that whole thing. Stop talking that So yeah I mean if If one of the, if one of you guys like said, something about my mother, I would come through this zoom right now and I would I would I would get suspended for a couple of weeks. You know it's it's almost like perfect. You coach suspended for Twenty Games like what's to stop him from getting on the phone and telling a Guy Hey, you know you're you're leaning out with your front shoulder a provoked a guy who was like their division rival and you know and he's GonNa. Lose. Games in the field not that the astros looked like there. Any great shakes.

Ahead of this weekend's renewal of the bay, Bridge series between the as giants. This time three games at Oracle. Park starting Friday night. This is this is great. I don't think that this might be the first time. We've had all four of us here on on a zoom. Let's let's do roll call I'm Henry Susan Susan Year. My name is John Shea I cover baseball. This is this is great So the first giants as bay. Bridge series of the season and these two teams are neck and neck for best team in baseball the as what the at thirteen and six I think best record in the American league and the. Second, best record in the majors behind the cubs in the giants are down there eight and twelve. After you know really bad drip but you know the the one thing I've noticed of Susan in that you can talk about this because you've seen this pitching we're GONNA have a great pitching like three great pitching matchups I'm Gonna I'm GonNa try and remember off the top of my head. So it'll be a montage versus Cueto on Friday in Luzardo versus Who Do we got Gaza him sadder right Saturday, and then Web ooh you know might be the giants best starter right now of versus Mnaya on on Sunday I. Mean you guys as guys want to weigh in on this pitching that the as.

Twelve after a really bad drip but you know the the one thing I've noticed a Susan that you can talk about this because you've seen this pitching we're going to have a great pitching three great pitching matchups I'm Gonna I'm GonNA train remember these off the top of my head. So it'll be a montage versus Cueto on Friday then Luzardo versus Do we got gall bladder right Saturday, and then Webb. Who might be the giants best starter right now versus Mnaya on on Sunday you guys as guys want to weigh in on this pitching that the have had. Well. Yeah. Out of the. The rotation on paper looks tremendous in practice mnaya actually has been a little bit of the weak link He started off the season in a very strange rut where he was just going. Okay through the first the first time through the opposing lineup and then giving it up, and then as last time, it was basically not great from the get go. So everyone else's ferrying fairly fairly well except for fires come Nafa new, not the best start. But yeah, the the rotation theoretically is a mom among the best in baseball I would say Montas Grizz, ill player of the week list region of what is he giving up one run the last fourteen innings last he starts. So he's probably the best at anybody innovation. I gotTa ask you guys I'm sorry but. How come the as are so good with all these batting averages that are way below three hundred there's one guy hitting above two seventy. Robbie gross everybody else in the one hundreds in the low two hundreds our they get done. That's a great question home runs. John Shea. As enough over the years to know that they're not always the most diverse kind of lineup, they don't score and a lot of different ways very, very little small. We're not even seeing it with a runner on second in extra innings. Really they're swinging for the fences and you're right the one guy that's really been going most of the years Ramon Laureano, who they're probably about to lose her for your four games and probably the entire giants aged Komo's pitching bullpens been great to they played a lot of low scoring games. They've won a lot of I think wanted to run games. So spanky why I love Tony Caps the flashlight to.

S. I mean how big of a deal as it well you know it's potential a very big deal to potentially very alarming but for right now we're not really clear how real this is you know if as you said a few S. Philippines relationship does and China will benefit because Duarte the president of the Philippines has threatened to really go to China or develop a relationship with China and Russia it comes at a time for us when you know Donald Trump in his policies are attacking or questioning other U. S. alliances within the region so what this is going to do is complicate this is tree does a race and does it complicate US operations in the Pacific and specifically the South China Sea which we are disputing which is in dispute right now among many countries we think the timing of all this well you know I I think people were talking about that present or two was particularly upset that one of his very close confident of senator was denied a visa because the senator was the architect of the government crackdown on drug dealers and users which according to some human rights groups have killed almost twelve thousand people on and you know it's been well known the tortoise not that happy with United States generally because of the criticism related to this but you know we have to realize that the relationship with the US and Philippines is very long standing I mean we've had diplomatic relations since nineteen forty five we have all kinds of relationships economic cultural and and one on track on on on terrorism as well which is very important so you don't seem convinced of this things actually gonna end that that the treaty exactly will will expire when it's supposed to expire correct yeah yeah I'm not I'm not convinced that because I think what's happening with the Philippine people very much favor U. S. U. S. Philippine relations close relations particular military relationship the military you know the sound source familiar here with completely caught off guard by this announcement they're not happy about it and most people think the Philippines needs the U. S. to to push against China in the South China Sea because they're one of the disputants in that particular area and finally they think that you know this could be a rallying cry for opposition against or two but you know Duarte does not like the United States he doesn't think there strategically important and he does have a track record of actually downgrading security activities so you you can't take it lightly but there are other relationships more importantly the mutual defense treaty some other agreements which are really significant the mutual defense treaty that the Philippines comes our attack we would defend them you know if you go down the road and actually does is visiting forces agreement does actually terminate then does become you know expose the defense treaty all of that in our relationships and our base ability to go two different countries in our military near in Asia Pacific this was a historical perspective have they ever been has there been this push and pull over the decades yes I mean you know the Philippines is a former colony you know we had basis we had bases there and in nineteen ninety two we were actually asked to close our U. S. bases in civic the huge pieces Subic naval base and Clark Air Force base I believe it was in nineteen ninety two that was a blow to the relationship but because the relationship of the Philippines is so broad and so deep and because of what was going on in China and I think it was nine eleven there was a real strategic interest from the Philippines to re engage with us and so while we don't have bases there per se we have the ability to go there and to have our military assets troops go through the Philippines and use the facilities on their way to other places so you know we've seen that the ebb and flow of relations both on the military side and just generalizations when for example you know president Marcos the Decatur was in power as well that is Philip union president and CEO of the world affairs council traffic and weather up there we know you've been planning for Valentine's day for weeks what you haven't Walgreens has you covered with everything you need to say happy Valentine's day in no time say I love you with the perfect tell Marquardt say you're my sweet heart with the perfect box of chocolates.

"When the eighty nine quake badly damaged the Easter bay bridge was the first real test for the bay area's mass transit systems KCBS is Megan goals we reports it's a test that officials say they're ready to take again when the six point nine Loma Prieta hit the clock started ticking for bart to get up and moving again with officials knowing that would happen long before the bay bridge would be drivable we were able to return to service within twelve hours and it was an important stop time for bart because the bay bridge of course was damaged and so we were the only game in town and Jim Ellison who speaks for bar says they are prepared for that to happen again when the next big quake strikes with our earthquake safety program that began in two thousand four and that is nearing completion and so now we're focusing on the interior of the transbay tube making it really resilient for an earthquake that occurs every one thousand years for their part muny has devised earthquake safety guidelines and say that if you are on a bus or train during a quake stay on board it's actually a pretty safe place to be drivers will be given the all clear before they can move again and that could take sometime if there's damage there's also plans to say about the electric buses with traditional ones in case the powers knocked out in the case of a big quake the ferry system will be a good bad in fact it was the eighty nine quake that made the bay area's ferry network what it is today as more and more people were forced to use the water to get back and forth across

"bay bridge" Discussed on Giants Splash
"Top adventure athletes like rock climber alex handled who came on to talk through his incredible free solo climb of el capitan in yosemite. The big part of the film is like the whole love story with my girlfriend and all that but i hadn't even met her when we started listen in wherever you get your podcasts wild west today on as plus we are delighted to welcome in john shea the chronicles national baseball writer. John is often a regular on this podcast podcast but we've we have not seen enough of you this year john. It's just wonderful to have you back especially with one of our favorite things coming up this week. The first in the bay bridge series the as will be at the giants tuesday and wednesday <hes>. How do you see this. You know our arcor favorite beverage series especially with the as still in contention in the giants. Maybe playing a little bit better than i think. People expected earlier in the year but but not you know maybe maybe not quite worthy as our If these teams matched up this time of year in the past two seasons only one team would have had maybe one team would have something to play for but now both teams have something to play for the giants actually in it but i mean not really because half the league is in the national league wild card race. I mean literally. There's seven teams within three and a half games and the giants have happened to be three and a half out but you know the american league. Obviously they have a lot to play for the as all all they have to do is finish one team in this race unless boston makes some kind of crazy run here in the last two months which doesn't seem likely but they'll have to to do is finish ahead of tampa bay or whoever finish the second in the central cleveland or minnesota the giants have to finish the head a bunch of teams at the league like i says involved in miss crazy nationally wild card race so there's there's something to play for and that that's pretty cool because <hes> you know oftentimes the giants finished last the last couple of years was in the ace had their bad stretch a few years ago where they weren't really in this time of year so now suddenly both teams are in it and that's that's the beauty of the wildcard because otherwise they would not be <unk>. There's a very close to first place at all yeah. It's <hes> it's always tougher when you've got a ton of teams ahead of you that you know the the baseball people always say really. It's not the number of games back. It's the number of teams ahead of you because when you have to start leapfrogging so many teams playing each other down the stretch. The math starts just to get a little complicated so obviously teams really wanted. Just go for the division. I don't think that's going to be very likely in either case the way the dodgers played away the astros would play the as have four games against the astros on this current essentially too weak homestand at the is have they've got to san francisco and then it's a week and a half at the coliseum kim in a in a kind of a tough one you know they've got the astros coming in and they got the yankees and then they've got to against the giants finish up at the coliseum so fun week a busy week but a tough one now. I know you haven't seen the ice for a while. The thing that jumped out to me and you've probably noticed from afar is the rotation has just been so much better better than we ever. They all spring we kept saying man with this. Rotation might not be very good. We spent the offseason going. Who's even gonna pitch for them. A really it's turned into the strength of the team team. The offense has been dragging <hes> and the bullpen has been radic as everyone knows what are your thoughts looking at the as current rotation especially with some of the additions editions they made with roark and bailey will go in the second game at san francisco that was supposed to be the big question mark coming in it was a big question mark last year. Oh you had a strong bullpen. You knew you had a a deep and powerful lineup but in this case for whatever reason it's the rotation nation you're right with fires and passive just awesome since the all star break and <hes> you know without montages get the p._d. Suspension and <hes> i you know maybe you have puck and luzardo. Come in come in quickly here <hes> in that'll be good news in september <hes> <hes> but it's it it's cool to see these lower scored games because of the the as have not been able to you know the firepower two run homer yesterday and as we speak it's monday here <hes> with <hes> chapman double almost a home run and then then then the two run home run but but if if if <hes> if chris davis comes around i you know then you know all bets are off. This is a this is a mighty team once again but that's a really strange james thing. He seems healthy but <hes> he's seems out a rhythm timing. He's getting full. He's swinging balls out of the zone. What what do you see there you see because that was the one consistency in the lineup. You knew he was gonna hit. Forty home runs collect one hundred r._b._i. Is in hit <hes> was it to forty three to forty seven year and in this year is just not happening yeah. It's you know the the injuries obviously affected him before the break he is now fully healthy but <unk> as bob melvin mentioned in chicago this week <unk> sometimes when you're injured you can get into some bad habits when he come back. Can throw your timing off. It's such when you're talking about hating a big league fastball or taking pitch you're talking about you know just fractions of an inch here in in their something different with your setup with your swing and of course your timing just to a millisecond off and you're just not going to barrel the ball and that's what we're seen gene. We've seen a lot of <hes> he's. He's actually hitting the ball better but he's just not quite there. He's not quite barreling the ball up. He's having good at bats much better at bats recently. He's taken some walks. He's getting some big singles. He's mitch mixing them in but that is not with the as need they need that big threat in the middle of the order in the fact you know he volunteered to move down lineup which to take some pressure off him and he felt like other people could do the job better and kudos for him for recognizing that and suggesting it <hes> shows is no ego shows. He's a team guy but <hes> without as much a threat in the middle of the order that affects matt olson his numbers have been a little bit down recently and a clearly has affected matt chapman. You can pitch around matt chapman a little bit more you can pitch around metals and a little bit more when you don't have have chris davis swimming swinging the bat while they need him to get on on track the fact the as have stuck right in contention with chris davis doing very little power our wise and with trying to intervene oh really not getting on track at all you know they've been waiting for them for months and months and every it's you know it's a half step forward and two steps back two steps back it seems like it's pretty extraordinary <hes> and if they get any of those guys but especially davis to come back even partway to where they usually are they could be could be in pretty decent shape because she's they've essentially managed to do without them for for months. Now yet seems could be one of melbourne's best managing jobs given all that you just what we say that you know you look who really had been there and most electrifying player. You're the guy who kind of was getting things going. You know especially late in games. He's got you know kinda that plays with passion and had the knack for the big hit and and <hes> you know he's out until i i'm going to say a safe assumption. Maybe early september. That's a huge blow in here. The still are just hanging around. They will not go away. They've got that chance and you look at their schedule. They don't play anymore. Wildcard <hes> candidates <hes> but you know like you said houston and new york they play klay eight against the astros six against the yankees but otherwise they play all losing teams then again the raise who were right there with the as in the wild card art race <hes> are in the stretch applying twenty one straight games against losing teams so <hes> the schedule seems to be somewhat <hes> you know equal equal for those teams and <hes> you know the cleveland and minnesota just got done playing a four game series cleveland did better eh. That's the only race they only evisceration in the league right now. They're they're tied for first place but but yeah i'm i'm thinking if maybe the season goes as chris davis grows. Maybe he'll it is to to forty seven again and all that but but but then again he has seventeen home runs and we're talking giants as right going into inserts that would be number one on the giants and he's he's having his worst year in oakland so that that goes to show you how these two teams are built our you know one for power one not so much for fowler got to rely on other things and and <hes> anyway so it's it'll be a nice little two game series but but more than that <hes> like you said the as a stretcher where like houston in the end the yankee so van if they can finish you know five hundred through that they're they're a decent shape they are. Are you know hey ma as somebody asked me in the reluctant as mail bag that i just posted somebody asked me maybe should chris. Davis consider cutting his hair like matt chapman. It seemed to work for chapman hits. The homer almost hit hits went out in the the final game at chicago centrally did it just kinda got hauled back in a little bit <hes> yet. Why not ah i love chris davis his hair but you know maybe it's time to to sacrifice it for for i guess a bigger bigger 'cause if he if he wants to consider that <hes> the way the d. h. <hes> in the national league park with what's chris davis's role he he he played so well in the field in pittsburgh you know he he looked actually really solid. He's always been a decent outfielder in terms of being able to go and get the ball make the placing should it's always just been that arm but he actually made some good throws in that series but making a superb catch in foul territory up against the wall. He incurred that side injury which really has impacted his his season terribly. He's not gonna play in the field in notionally game and i get i'm guessing might not ever play on the field again as a result talk which is a shame but he's just too valuable for the as even when he's struggling. They're not gonna try so he will be. I guarantee you. He will be getting some at bats. He'll be coming coming off the bench but he will not not be in the field. The good thing is for from the as perspective is chad. Penders been playing very well in the outfield. He's always very good outfielder and he's also <hes> hitting the ball better than he has all year so <hes> he might be a little bit of a wildcard in in that series <hes> robbie grossman getting on as how some good options out there. <hes> canna always likes to mix things up in san francisco. I think that just kind of figured out that he's got a lot of personality <hes> and loves to play the giants who he grew up rooting for so we might see some who we see about flip against bumgarner. I don't know what happened. If if mac max muncie got that kind of reaction what is mark canada do they're going to be looking out for that so he's with laureano out. He's he's doing a nice job in center and almost providing as much personality and passion slower ghana which stuff to do and of course we should mention you know. It's a two thousand nineteen. You've done some really nice work writing about memories of those nineteen eighty nine teams <hes> specially the giants who wrote a really nice pace coming up these series have really got to remind you of <hes> you know really special season for both teams in one thousand nine hundred nine yeah i was at the giants little get together the night before the reunion <hes> downtown hotel and just urine some guys talk. Yeah i mean they're thing was winning the pennant obviously they got swept by the way so there wasn't a whole lot of talk about the world series <hes> it was you know quite a season to win the division and then beat the cubs in was it five games with we'll clark going off etc <hes> but but <hes> with again with the few things i did hear about the world series..
