"And he explained, like, OK, if I give Batman Begins four stars, which he did, and then I give Casino four stars, I'm not saying they're equal movies. I'm comparing Batman Begins four stars is put it on the scale of where I give Batman Forever a star and a half. That means I think this is that much better than Batman Forever. I mean, you know, I'm giving Casino four stars. That means watch some crappy gangster movie. This is this is the four star, you know, so different scales. Yeah. Well, I would give two ratings. Well, and I wouldn't even watch 21 grams again. I watched I would probably watch, you know, if you tell me, hey, what do you want to watch? Oh, but you gave 21 grams. I was like, yeah, but I'm not going to watch it again. I don't have that mental capacity to actually, you know, put myself through that again. But I was like, but yeah, I I would even say an eight, but I'm like, man, there were just a few times where I was like, fuck, yeah, but I don't know why it's still just a well done film. And I still can't really explain why I liked it. I really can't. Yeah. And you don't always have to know. There's no rules. Just right. Just rules. Robin is racing the traffic. So I would give this an eight five with a nostalgia bump. I mean, it's probably seven point five. But for me, I just love watching it over and over again. I mean, like I said, I've watched it in theaters. We watch it. And I think I bought it on DVD. I've watched it two or three times then. I think I've seen it another two or three times on TV. And then this time I'm approaching maybe 10 watches, I think. But yeah, watching it again, it's just like I said, deliciously 90s. And it is a reverse diehard where he's in there and the cops know they're just trying to get him out.

"My favorite. I mean, the Dark Knight, the second of the Nolan trilogy. Yes. The joke that he was, you know, obviously he was fantastic. Yes, that's my favorite, too, by far. Best. Some people don't like it, but I don't see why. I mean, Heath Ledger is the Joker was spot on. Yeah, no, that was yeah, I really enjoyed that. I didn't I didn't care for the third one. Yeah, the Batman begins was that was pretty good. I enjoyed that. Yeah, it was good because it was the first time to see Batman since 1989. So of course, 1989, Batman always has a nostalgic place for me. I don't think it's the best one, but it's, you know, and in 1989, it was amazing. It was amazing. Exactly. Our 12 year brains couldn't handle that because we never had any of that because we didn't have the riches of comic book movies that we have now. But looking back on that movie now, like, yeah, yeah. It's still obviously I'm biased because I'm like, OK, this is kind of the Batman when I was a kid, so I like it. But, you know, I don't probably give it a fair shake compared to somebody that's never seen it. Yeah. Ben, of course, his favorite is Batman and Robin with George Clooney. Oh, bat nipples. Yeah. I mean, if you don't have nipples on the bat suit, why are you even making a movie? That's all I can say. What's what's your favorite Batman movie, Ben? Oh, that's a good one. Despite what Al says, I think a Batman is good enough for me. Followed closely. I like I like Batman Begins, but I really am not a huge fan of the rest of that series. OK, but. I like that they took still his origin story, but, you know, when a slightly different route with it in the Batman Begins, I like the storyline that they followed there. So I think those two are probably tied for my favorite Batman movie.

"Serious manner, but I think you do need that kind of levity in this film because it was too dark. It simply wouldn't work at all because it does feel like the most serious of the four of the four that are sort of kind of connected. Yeah. 100%. It's definitely the most serious and some people might not like that it wasn't as king. There's a hint of camp, but it's definitely not that can't be a it doesn't come where anywhere near the last two. I find that I find that interesting, especially when we, this film still gets a bit of not ridicule but sort of like, you know, well, you know, whatever. Doesn't get the respect that it doesn't. Considering how positively received Batman Begins while it was. And then The Dark Knight came out and shot up. And it's deadly serious. There are moments of levity, but it comes from the villain. There's no moment of levity from Bruce Wayne, you know, we can get slide. Small jokes, but their serious crime driven films. So it surprises me that when people look back on Batman Returns, they don't go. Well, I can see what they're trying to do. They're trying to keep trying to have these serious elements in. Lighten the tone. It does kind of confuse me that people do sort of say, it's not worth the time, which to me is completely wrong. Now I am agreeing a 100% with you both. I think no matter what you do with Batman, the has to kind of be a little bit of camp, just a little bit, because we are talking about characters that dress up like cats and bats and birds and clowns. There has to be just a little touch of, you know, we know what we're doing. We know this is, you know, we're trying to take this seriously, but there is still an air of ridiculousness.

"Spider-Man was reinvented with ultimate Spider-Man, which predates all the reboot, like things back in the 90s, and then Batman Begins, you know? What Christopher Nolan did, you know? He captured a vibe of a Batman movie in like a big Hollywood thing, and people are like, yeah, this is rules and started the whole wave of grounded versions of lecture. It's really been, you know? It's interesting to me because one of the best sci-fi shows in the world was basically going to be Star Trek, and that was Babylon 5. And they basically stole Deep Space Nine from him, and that didn't work out and he made Babylon 5 and you can see the, you can see the excellence of somebody who probably was going to go towards IP, which is Star Trek stuff, but because he couldn't, and because it didn't work out, did his own thing, which became one of the best shows that I probably ever seen on TV. And I do like these guys getting flexibility, but sometimes it feels like when these new guys come in, they maybe have one or two movies before they get in the Hollywood grind. Where it's like you get one or two freedoms and then you get into the grind. Some people are really good at staying out of the grind. Like, what's his name with? He always does creatures with multiple eyes. The guy who did hellboy, the first one. Yeah. He pretty much can get away with whatever weirdness. And it really depends on how much weirdness he has if you like it or not. But it seems like a lot of people get in the grind to Hollywood after a while. They get to grind it. And I think we see it with the developers. Like I said, I really didn't think Death Stranding would be good. And I tease it all the time because I didn't enjoy it, but obviously it's good.

"Ali. So specifically, you become an idea you become legend. That's just Batman. That's just The Batman idea. That Chris finola puts in the first Batman Begins. Wait, but that's actually the words from Batman. Yeah. You have to become an idea. You have to become a legend, mister Wayne. Fuck. Fuck. That's hilarious. But like Batman could Batman be any more of a bin Laden trope, like he sees evil, he's a billionaire, he's a billionaire Playboy that doesn't have to earn his own living. He then invests loads in the technology to fight this evil and then decimates loads of things by doing it. Think about it. Bin Laden hung out in caves. We didn't know for sure how tall he was until we killed him. He 6 four. We don't even know if he spoke English. He's an idea. He's a legend. So I don't have to believe it's bin Laden saying that to believe the truth of it. The truth is that if you can make yourself an idea or a legend, you can change the world. You can do those things. Our imagination failed us before 9 11, and predicting the attacks. And so afterwards, we put it into overdrive. We scared ourselves silly, yes, but there haven't been a tax of that magnitude since. And it's possible, maybe even likely that that is because we were able to piece together the scenarios and stop them. But in understanding why bin Laden would strike in the first place, why? So many in the world would support it, and why he would be hell bent on doing it again, our imagination failed us once more. Americans are asking, why do they hate us? In all our searching the horizon for the why of it all? We always just keep coming back to the same answer, it's always been. They hate our freedoms. Our freedom. They hate us because we're so awesome. Rarely any talk of how the U.S. funded the mujahideen in 1980s and helped build up bin Laden. Of how much we meddled in the Middle East. And it was our complete inability to imagine just for a moment that maybe Osama bin Laden wasn't the Joker after all. But maybe? He was Batman. And maybe we are the bad guys. Or at least more than just the innocent victims of a comic book villain. It's asking a lot, and honestly, I'm not sure any nation has a strength of character to pull off that sort of radical introspection. But trying to understand why millions believed in him, why in some countries there's graffiti that portrays him as the white knight and not us? Why, after 9 11, the baby name Osama saw it in popularity? Least it might have informed our response to what happened on September 11th. And how we behaved in the world on September 12th..

"Like they're trying to tie them in somewhere, like the sun. But yeah, it doesn't, it's not entirely clear where these characters will show up next. Yeah. So I would say the biggest newsworthy thing about this film are the two post credit scenes, which is kind of sad because it's what is playing after the movie's over. That's right. I mean, if you're a vampire fan, you will find things to enjoy about this film. And it's no worse than any 90s, early 90s, early to mid 90s like superhero film. That's what it feels like. So on a scale of one to ten, what would you give this? So I am biased because I like vampires and superheroes. I'm going to give this a 6. So you enjoy this. I mean, I would say I'm in the one or two range. And maybe a two. Oh. Yeah. Ten star wide. Yeah. I mean, it was just like a one out of ten. So not even a full star. I mean, I gave it two one star out of 5. So we'll say two out of ten. Okay. I mean, it was like, and it was like I said in my review, I don't know if you read the review, but it was like, I didn't want to read it until I had seen it, and I only just saw it today. It was like, it's very dark and humorless without any sort of dramatic heft. But it's also preposterous to ridiculous, but it's not any fun. It's like there's almost no humor in it. If this had gone goofy and over the top of the tumor, I could respect it, or if it had some genuine deep like emotions to his transition into a vampire I could respect it either way. And we discussed that at least at some point was a blatant ripoff of Hans Zimmer's Batman Begins score. There was at least one part like a lot of it maybe echoes back to that. But there was one part that is either just a straight up homage or I heard Man of Steel too. I heard his Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel. Oh, did you? Yeah. Okay. Whoever composed this was listening to his greatest hits. Qualify. The rest of it seemed fine. The rest of the score was great. But there were at least parts where I was like, this is directly ripped off. And they do a lot of you've seen Dracula untold where, again, morbius has no powers whatsoever over bats. Yeah. That I know over that's ever really been used in the comics whatsoever. Yeah. But they definitely use it in this. Yes. So it also had a Batman Begins vibe, where it's like, you know, they show morbius standing in the tank of whatever bats, but they all scrolling around him all around him, yeah. That was very Batman Begins. A 100%. So it's like, man, the bad thing about referencing a good movie in a bad movie is it really puts a contrast to how bad your movie is..

I don't know if this is technically going to be the same batman from the tim burton movies with being motors. Who fucking knows. Bucky knows because again thomas wayne is name on the table just saying yes we know. We know that I think that if they couldn't get michael keaton. They probably would've gotten jeffrey dean morgan to reprise the role as a as thomas wayne Who knows now. There's a lot of inches interesting theories here. I'm gonna with the wild swans just because they're fun okay The so the whole nightmare versus thing would be a really fun. Dramatic star to the movie obviously But another really fun. Thought is if you wash that teaser. close to the end of it. We see batman walking ford in front of the camera and to see the back of his head in the cowl. And what is interesting. Here is smarter people than me have picked on the fact that and then moment the score changes from the from the danny men era of batman movies and and it transforms. Into the hans zimmer. In britain a border is to a bony part of the body. Punch the boehner to be punch their armor not without asking centavo. We get the hell eating connects the weaving taller. That makes comic that much better. That building your good note. He was making his double entendre Time he's writing the writers always now. I just always assumed that well owner of pisa is one of the greatest architectural boehner's in history. So what are the other ones. I don't know i feel like they just. I don't know the really major tourist attraction. Guess it's staying. Would it feels. Like i don't know yes. When you pick something. Totally philip ours. You know you gotta right a lot of comics so you just go. You know all american of it all to be our like oh once a building is a little bit messed up. Oh yeah that's our that leaves work. I mean it looks like an fall over. It's only it's actually the leaning tower pizza. Like i said when i was like four. Be more impressed. If only only had left standing straight up in superman three wealth superman three maybe they also just wanted to have artists draw castle. Because we're always doing weird things like by of eight. So i'm gonna build myself gasol or i have money to buil- myself some weird glass house. No zoning laws not knows only know osha. No hey hey i live. There's really no zoning on me you put any. I could lock the house down and put up business up no matter as long as i don't houses down the back roads those big house. They'll never go down a couple of thousands in turn that corner william houses that are like mp by you older. Like mcmansions monstrosity diner. Well i think you should start seven castle the bill. Let's go no clubhouse in the in a cave beneath my house. Big penny again sore. Why wouldn't you ride l. k. Just pretty good but not quite as bullish on the on. The king staley bragged and they will get skill was walling robbins castle. But he didn't bargain on the joker and his boot or crimes. Do i mean how could you know all right. The joker on the radio. How do you like my boner grind laughing. No us we're still laughing. Any says there are more boehner crimes. Soon batman will make the boehner of the year the net. Where robin says. What does he mean bruce. Force you into a voter. I don't know whatever it is. It isn't good. that's for sure. Words have never been spoken. This this is another thing that is funny about comic books is. They're always whatever they need is perfectly a book then. Bat bruises like. Let's continue our study of greg owners of time and he just took off the shelf. No it doesn't work like that. You don't just walk into library. Okay i need a rich soft that you. I don't think people have written like heads up. Greatest voters of all awesome saudi. You don't think he has a book criminology. Library about the greek buhner's of history. Our now honestly i'm calm surprise. Somebody has written a book because dominic. So now i wanna know it's there. It's not now. I kind of want us right yet. Now you now. That's the real. Nobody's britain it you have to do. I mean obviously the greatest voter is this right here. I don't know until we get the all star. Batman and robin own. Close later faith auto. Oh my god more subjects getting his good stuff in bilfinger now. Another boehner grind is a gun. Made out of wood was really out doing so. Although his henchman is ready you paid for another puna. Crank joker and is ready to wouldn't get past the metal detector. But then i always think of that scene. In a batman begins for the gun doesn't work dark knight nevermind walk now that i was talking about. Don john dillinger. Who pulled who committed a glaring boehner. The guard committed the voter. Oh yeah juror. Was the guy that use winning guns in the one gun. Banks ring was so lax. They like your on wedding band. That's good i guess. Maybe the students married. But i love the cop. "Is the housekeeping. Shall we get on into this super episode. Yes every episode super. That makes all at that. So i mean this is an episode. There are groups. There are no a ratings at the very end. It's just us chattanooga up talking about our experiences a little bit of our collection of highlights. So i mean i think the first place start out. I mean it wouldn't be a on episode if we didn't go round robin round the horn and Do a little bit of our our initial reaction first impression of a little bit of our story so he wants to go first. Our tree of superhero video game ner dumb. Yeah just give us a pallet. Start us off. You know. I'll give a quick summary. Start with like the first game superhero game. I remember playing was batman returns on the super nintendo That was like. I would spend hours and hours playing. That never beat it. I was. I was only like four or five. I think when i played it. But you weren't smart enough yet. I like played the first level over and over and over again. And i just had so detoro throw it was. It was bizarre to me. Because i was only used to platforms but on this one you could like throw bad guys into the background like into a window in the background and it was a big deal but the first video game i remember beating fully was spiderman on the nintendo sixty four based off the movie. I played that and i have since played it a few times. And it's just like a spiderman. Two video game on the gamecube is praised as like the mecca. But but for me. Obviously i have those rose tinted glasses as being like the first video game i beat and so i. It feels like a warm blanket that i intend to sixty four game with all the polygons and everything beautiful But i would say i would keep it like the one. I've played the most. As far as like franchise would be ultimate alliance marvel's ultimate alliances. Like they got me early with the x men legends that led me untold alliance knife just since never looked back. Never look back. That's it and click. Yeah yeah So for me. I feel like i've been like a bottom feeder. All my life seems never because so for me superhero. Gay video games have always been the movie companion like game right. So it's like wolverine origins. The you know the x. Men the x. Men port where you could be night. Crawler is and wolverine your replay. That one now don't know but like it was like captain. America the first avenger the game. It was always those kind of things it was never like. There's a full-fledged game like when i was in based on movies but captain america and the avengers on snes played wasn't great but yeah it was. It was like that's kind of experienced them at first. it was just like if you wanted to play a superhero game. You had to get the movie game. And i had like the batman begins one for sure which is kinda fun. It was pretty fun. It was a little like dumb. But like you know you're you're the only way you're gonna get some you know But then i had a really good friend in in high school who ended up like having his snes and we end up playing like the o..

"Character i i wanna get go ahead. Yeah i have no clue. I need to watch trailer okay. Here's what i think though. Okay or do you have a question for no no I think that this feels like and for more reasons than one that d. e you wanted to have a guardians of the galaxy movie nia little bit and they brought in james gunn. And that's what they're trying to band of misfits. You don't work. what the thing is somebody like. This is going to have the highest main character death toll of any superhero movie. There's like ten or twelve super hero or super villains on the team. You know the only reason. I mean this is going to get really dark for a second. Dc can we kill off one movie and see what happens on. What's that rogue one. Let's do that in the dc that that's justice league dark apocalypse where they literally do that. All right we've got lots of other subs next or going to the movie i am. I don't know i'm really pumped for this movie the batman. It's coming out. It was supposed to come out this year. But i'm not going to get into that coming out next year in march. Maybe you could see it for your birthday dad. I watched that the plot revolves around the hunt for a serial killer. The riddler most likely who murders wealthy gotham residents as well as batmans discovery of a deep conspiracy reaching far back into goffin's history and potentially involving his own parents. Okay i know very little about dc and very little about that man but that sounds a lot like quarter vowels to me. It does good. I did it. have you read that. I read that shit that comment. This is most likely going to be taking from a lot of different Comic books and even then telltale game series where their parents were actually evil. And that's how they got their money. And so i decided to go his own different direction and try to save gotham. But this is how it might go. We might just see the bruce wayne's parents were a part of the court avowals in the corvallis hired retailer to expose the history of these high end rich boys. And how does this fit into dc or the eu. It does not nothing to see you. This is a complete. This is even more disconnected. And what is it birds of prey. I call it harley. Quinn this is. This is like batman begins disconnect. Its own it starting its own universe. It's it might be loosely connected to the joker movie. We're not sure quite yet. And it's been kind of about rumored and all this stuff but there will also be a prequel spin off. Show the coming the year before. That means we are back. It's coming on. Hbo max called pd the rise of gotham villains. When you start when does that premier. We're not sure okay..

"Yeah i would agree I do have a final question. Kevin you want to wrap up with the was a couple of things. Just in terms of nolan's action direction We've known he could do large-scale stuff for a long time. You know the the truck chase dark knight leads very well into the convoy sequence in this movie but in terms of his fist fighting and movies. That has definitely taken a journey. Because you watch. Those fistfights in batman begins my goodness try to follow. What is going on in those sequences and you compare that to where we are with tenant where he has. The kitchen fight with john. David washington fighting off a couple of sater's goons with a cheese grater notably. It is very well. Shot cut action. It's really fantastic. I can't say. I noticed enough to abort against it so i must have enjoyed. How was shaw. The remember batman begins that well for being badly stage fighting so badly shot by all. I'll take your word for on that one. But i have no problem with the action itself in a film i just i think some of the biggest episodes are messy as we as we touched on there was also one. I just want to ask you about your. Maybe you're Experience watching the first time which is the moment where the protagonist is captured. And he's in that red room and then the other side you bet the blue room in there facing each other through the pane of glass. And kenneth branagh is talking backwards while also playing audio forwards. Were you as baffled. As i was the first time watching that sequence absolutely i was i whether it was like being in two mosques and just being like surrounded in imp- stick that was making a halt. Hey things but. I couldn't understand what they were saying. It was backwards. I knew like saying the trailers that was inversion and there was backwards stuff. I knew getting into. But even then i was like what is this nonsense like also with the audio issues with the movie that the first time through mike. Maybe i just don't understand that because the audio kind of mess i will say the second time through it. Hit way better and that's the thing with this movie. It's such a tough movie to grade because like someone who feels that compulsion to rewatch this movie after. I've seen it like. I don't know five or six times. What is my takeaway from this movie versus where it is now right. Like that's the thing it's such a head scratcher and look a lot of people will watch movie once and that's the takeaway you know. I didn't like that movie. It was confusing. I don't wanna watch it again and for a lot of people that's fair. I completely think they are have a right to that opinion but for me. It's like if you ask cam. You know ten years from now what he thinks of tenant what is is take what is his take. Well i guess. I could ask him. I'll meet them in about five years. That's it that's it when we They send you backwards to say at the end of the wealth. Yeah it's the temporal pincer movement. We get to meet up in five years to exactly what i think of this movie. In ten. I call my studio episode of this podcast with you and you in future. It'll be unbearable or is it in the post now. Here's the question. I feel like if i Myself i would probably hate myself..

"There's that one as far as the fun side of the sword and sandal would go jason and the argonauts Of course Harry hutchison who did the clashes. Titans effect say he did a you know a bunch of films with the facts but The jason argonauts one of the classic ones of fun again. Somehow snyder is able to lake. Take spartacus and jason and argonauts and kind of blend them like definitely go with that. Alamo the john wayne produced and directed nine hundred nineteen sixty film. Because the alamo is actually what i thought of when i saw three hundred. It's pretty much the same story of of small of group of people going up against the really big huge army where you've got the one team that's just fighting because it's the right thing whereas you've got the other group that's more of the spoiled and entitled and this smaller team of people is able to do damage to that big that big army and then that is like spiritual victory then leads to greater things to come and becomes like you know a battlecry so the alum all i always loved. I haven't seen that movie in forever. I used to always come on tv. When i was little and i would always watch it And i don't know if the hell moses big a deal 'cause i did grow up in texas as it was a grownup in texas but For me that was the story that came to mind for me instantly. Yeah now that makes a lot of sense. I think definitely works three more real quick. I was gonna say return of the jedi because return of the gi again. Sort of thing of you've got the bad guys with all the technology with everything and then you've got the little guys in return. It really is little guys. It's e- walks with rocks and sticks you know. Almost the david and goliath kind story. Which i'm always a fan of that sort of thing and i would go with. Batman begins because batman begins. I think also was important because it started to take a comic book movies in a new direction in two thousand and five i. That was before this wasn't it. Yeah i would've thought it was. Oh that's crazy. So so batman begins is is part of Like three hundred of getting us to where we are now with a comic book movies shore of doing things more of you know for adults instead of thinking. This is for kids exactly home last one. I mentioned there's just he man and the masters of the universe nineteen eighty three the cartoon movie so just just the fact that he man was so cut you know and and like here on this on you got three hundred of these guys look like he man but and i would also say that you know this. This movie really opened up that the talks for a new. He man masters of the universe movie. Of course they keep saying we're going to get one every few years and it was in production supposed to come out last year this year and they still having shot and he's never going to happen chad but but to to that piece though. I ll be honest with me when you're walking to the car after you saw three hundred for the first time were you thinking to yourself. I.

The Dark Knight Trilogy (Nolan #4)
"Welcome to film spotting so Josh. We've arrived at the stage of our Nolan who've review where we've actually reviewed the films on the show previously the first three films in the series following Memento and insomnia all predate film spotting this week. We're revisiting Nolan's dark knight trilogy. Two thousand five's Batman begins which started. It was one of the first films reviewed on the show. Way Back in two thousand five. That movie came out in June. The show began in March of. Oh five unfortunately. Our Review on episode eighteen of the show has been archived in the basement of Wayne Industry headquarters along with all the other films. Spotting PROTOTYPES COW. Can't hear me out among the disappointed listeners. Who went to search for that review? Just today thinking I'd be able to hear Sam. I thought it would be good preparation you know like to do. My homework. Couldn't find it so we'll have to unearth that at some point. Yeah I'll have to give you a tutorial on searching the archive film spotting website. Because it's there but you can bet. I did not seek it out interest in listening to the archive that I found only went back to. I forget what show but it wasn't this one so yeah I'll have to get to to`real but with that review lost a time. I guess the best thing we can do for now is move on to version two point. Oh world like to disappear. Barron staff was not for the parents to serve. Justice cannot let pass. If you yourself and you become something else. Dialing our Christopher Nolan overview stays on chronological track at least for the moment with two thousand five's Batman Begins Adam. This is Nolan's big-budget high profile. Follow up to insomnia which itself was a medium budgeted studio. Follow up to his indie breakout. Memento what did I expect from Batman begins in two thousand? Five Nolan was already on my radar as a special talent superhero movies. Were something I enjoyed but aside from Tim Burton's Batman Installments and Sam Raimi's Spiderman Efforts Spiderman. Too by the way came out in two thousand and four I felt Comic Book Films. Usually fell into a fairly predictable box. The question for Batman begins then was whether or not the John. Laura would bend to Nolan's promise or Nolan would bend to the genre in two thousand five to my mind. Nolan's will one out even next to Burton and Raimi's Work Nolan's take on the superhero film stood out as distinct. It was dark. It was intense and above all it was rooted in a real world. Specificity that was recognizable while building his costume. I love that Bruce Wayne Orders some ten thousand bat ears that turn out to be unusable. This Bruce Wayne and even Batman could exist just like us he had to do Amazon returns. That first impression of Batman begins makes me think that I watched it through the Lens of a Superhero Movie. Perhaps with tempered expectations this time. Though in the midst of our review I was decidedly watching it through the Lens of a Christopher Nolan movie and from that perspective keeping in mind masterful later efforts like the prestige which was Nolan's next film the Dark Knight which doubles down on much of what made Batman begins so throwing inception and dunkirk. That begins played as far more conventional. It has Nolan touches to be clear deception traumatized characters narrative twist but they each seemed a bit better towards the genre this time around something of a compromise. If in understandable one given where Nolan was in his career ultimately I think my original impression is probably the correct one and we can maybe get into a tangent here atom on whether or not a films original context matters. Most I think that's especially applicable. Maybe to dark knight rises but either. Way Adam. I'm curious what frame of mind you're in while revisiting Batman begins for our Nolan overview. Did you approach it as a superhero movie which in twenty twenty means contending with the reality of the MC you or did you assess it more? On a Nolan scale you know from interstellar on the bottom to the top where you'll find dunkirk. How dare you? I love how you unnerve me heading into my reply here and maybe that's appropriate because even though you answered it. I see what you're trying to do I'm onto you. You're actually previewing are pending discussion of the Dark Knight by presenting me with a joker like Dilemma Harvey. Rachel press the button and kill the other passengers. Risk them killing me Nolan movie or Superhero Movie. Your just an agent of chaos. Josh always knew what do I look like a guy with plan on one hand? I wasn't looking at this film. This trilogy of films as a Nolan creation consciously and I am it would be happening unconsciously of course just by the nature of this little project that we have set out on at the same time. I was eager to see this origin story again because just like I suppose bruce being forever scarred by his encounter with the bats I'm gonNA forever be blessed with the memory of my first superhero movie. Richard Donner's Superman. It's been talked about a little bit over the years here on the show and among its many thrills it shows us who Clark is how we got Earth those early discoveries of his gifts running alongside the train kicking that football. This first demonstrations of his abilities and helping people as Superman. That's the stuff I ate up. Then that's the stuff. I still eat up now. The Fun stuff. I guess that equate with Superhero movies. That is lost the darker. You alluded to this the darker. The more realistic the more serious. These movies get honestly the more these films feel less like Superman and more like James Bond. And that's definitely the case in this trilogy. I think this is where we really see. It happen right. Where Superhero Movies did turn into? Something else became something else in pop culture. We watched it unfold over the course of these. Three movies didn't we? I think that's fair. I think you could roll in watchmen there but that was two thousand nine so this was ahead of that.

"I asked all of you to pick five of your most reliable movies even as I'm here now. I'm thinking of other movies that I would have put on my list to Adam do you want to kick us off with one of yours absolutely? My number five is more of a movie. Batman begins and for me. That's because it has a four x structure James Unconventional. It basically created the modern superhero movie. It was the one that I think we all wanted and they finally figured out how to make it. And there's really no downtime. There's a little bit once once. The Second Act ends Bruce's coming back from being a Ninja. There's a little bit of time but even then it just keeps going well. I think that's part of it too. It feels like the movies constantly restarting like. It doesn't lose the momentum that you got from the last thing. But if almost feels like buster scruggs like it's like and now a news story in this world you love except that it it still builds on the stakes of the previous one. So yeah you have the beginning and you have what you have him going going here. It's Ninja Studies. But then flashback of him as a kid. Yeah and then but then it goes then it goes all right now. He's back in Gothenburg. There's more to this than just him being Ninja. It's him in Gotha somewhere between forty five minutes. An hour between forty five minutes in an hour until he becomes Batman Which is the that is. The best way of doing every other version has been high and Michael Keaton. I'll be Batman today. I hope you enjoy the film kids and then it just there. It's interesting that you liked that because I feel like mostly my gripe with a lot of Origin movies is. Oh you're it's the wait to get to that point and you're like just have them be it already. I think is Batman begins it so well and it had not been done before other than you got taste of like in the animated series and. I think it was like fracturing. This is on the tip of everyone's talking about if you if you just did a few things man and then they'd knocked it out of the park and it was. It's so damn good. I think that that's like probably the one Batman movie other than the dark night but dark knight even a watch. Jerry the Was He the joker parts. But like Batman begins. I love from beginning to end. See I know. I've definitely seen dark knight more than I've Seen Batman begins. I saw dark knight three times in the theater rich but I understand the news. Twelve years ago cheaper. I understand the difference that you're expanding because they think dark knight is one coherent story. That is just snowballing. Whereas Batman begins is like like you know these restarts again and again and it's way easier to be like I'm just GonNa Throw Him Batman begins and watch it. Yeah and infielder and tear to your point at least taking awhile. I think probably because audiences were ready for this. It's more satisfying when you get to Batman instead of just getting right away like you learned to appreciate it like you go. Oh this journey because remember. There's a guy who worked at the time he's like why has Bam Entry Ninjas stupid as a 'cause he trains jerk compelling to watch as well a lot Lindsey one of the movies on your list. I actually knew this was one. Eight year your. He's talked about buying definitely easy to put a Christmas movie on like a Rewatch ables list of because you have the opportunity every year to have those feelings and this is my number one holiday. Christmas rewatch -able movie. I watch it every year. I made you guys all watch it and put it. I bought it on Amazon Prime. Tell me lousy with the movie watcher itself. Oh thank you you never said the movement. Sorry I have eyeballs. Oh a lot of lead up and then you're GONNA build fit. I thought it was building to James. Caan you're a big fan of and the actor who played the kid overall favorite movies. Now I love it so much. Because it's it's that feel-good movie I mean it's a holiday movie so that's like Bilton but it's just really funny Yeah Yeah it's a great holiday comedy. I I remember walking away from this movie and being like I like the two thirds of it and it's charming guy. That's and that's why we're lucky that we have a will. Ferrell holiday movie. That isn't Daddy's home. Two good that we have this they were GONNA call that. Daddy's homer Yeah L. Flake. I think you hit the nail on the head with Chris Movies They. They need to be engineered for that. Yeah because that's the sign of a good lasting. Chris movie like home alone. I've seen more times than I can say to. The it's Christmas story marathon. I was GONNA say as long as it's better than a Christmas story and kids have to grow up watching that anymore. Oh God yeah. So here's the I think the interesting thing about a Christmas movie is that it should be about more than just. Christmas is like hard about Christmas. But it's about way more than just Christmas. Yeah like family. You kinda reunited so it's it's a from a different time when you could. You could mock little people. Yeah well That man went on to be tearing Lancaster. And what have you done with your life me not a lot not a lot. James. You hit the nail on the head with twenty years. I've seen this movie a billion fucking times gladiator. Yeah Wow yeah well. It's because there are lots of obviously we could see the movie. Certain people were putting in and stuff like that but I was like. I was like well action movies. Sometimes there's an action movie that you can watch and of course there's dumb ones like you can put any dumb silly action. Movie that's digestible on there. But gladiators like an epic and I couldn't imagine watching an epic scale movie historical epic type movie like this over and over again but gladiator. I have like I remember. I was in a Latin class in high school and the teacher didn't care at all about teaching and would be like We're GONNA watch gladiator. Nice it's like we're gonNA teach you about gladiator classes and long enough to watch all gladiator. Come back the next time says. When do we stop and then you go? I think it was what he was fighting the goals. Which is like the first fifteen minutes of the movie go? Okay you'd start there wouldn't finish and then you'd you'd end up watching gladiator again and again. I watch gladiator in two different classes in high school. That's pretty good But yeah it's just like I just think it's so digestible when you think about some of the other movies in this genre it's like exodus gods and kings and like like these big scale historical drama pieces and stuff just didn't none of them. None of them are is fun is gladiator is in my opinion. It's a dense movie. It's also covers a lot of ground here. there's not a lot of misunderstandings two and half hours pilates two and a half hours but like kind of like we're saying about some of those other movies it like has several start. It's like okay. Well there's the beginning part of the movie Where he's he's soldier but then there's the part where he's training and then there's the part where he's leaving rebellion and like it so there's all these like restarts and stuff. Yeah I honest I still think this is one of walking penises best performances and I feel like it's a role that you would never see him again. Oh Yeah Russell. Crowe no keep Russell Crowe. I'll never liked this ever again. Heartthrob Sexy Action Lead Caesar Cut. I've never seen this movie. It's real good yeah. He didn't joy in a lot is like I'm going to say that a lot about some of the films early. It's okay I mean if you ever wondered we're doomed got his mask from. You should watch glad I will watch a lot of these movies. I'm sure but yeah no. I Love Gladiator. It's pretty it's weird because it was one of one best picture and like people in hindsight were like really gladiator.
