Uh, you know, I thought a long time about doing because I'm a very big Baseball fan, you know, but you but you decided not to. Yeah, well, I had some things on my schedule, You know? Okay. Dinner at 3 30. And then I got to get in. I'm we're doing the work of the American people. So are you a big baseball fan? Oh, my goodness. Los Angeles Dodgers' Trevor Bauer Subject of MLB Inspection for Suspicious Baseballs
"Dodgers big. Dad's we talked about. We were talking about the dodger. We're talking about the trevor bauer situation as someone was trying to pour cold water on the dodgers situation where ken rosenthal. The athletic was reporting that multiple suspicious baseball's from the dodgers starting pitcher trevor. Bauer were sent to major league baseball for inspection to which bauer went to social media to clear that. Hey not just me because if you single one person out it makes it sound like they're guilty. That is the way most people think but it is a a wide range of pitchers whose balls have been collected to see what's on the balls to inspect the balls. And the dodgers took exception to it and i get it now. Trevor responded to that today. Here's what drivers at since. It's only illegal for pitchers to have foreign substance on their person their body whatever. It's not illegal for a catcher to have it on his shin guards or his chest protector as we've seen it's not illegal for basement having on his glove or a center fielder to have it on his gloves. So far as i am aware potentially rule change. There's some language. But as far as i know the rules baseball it is legal for those players to have stuff on their gloves. So my question is if i threw a pitch and it gets thrown out and tested and then have the foreign substance on. How do they know that. It came from me and not from the catcher's glove or from the third basements glove or nfl ball. What does that happen to hit the bat. The handle of a bet where a hitter has pine tar or whatever other substance he wants which is completely legal so long as it doesn't go too far up that how are they gonna tell that that was knee and fault me for using four in substance when that could have come from any host of other places that are legal.

You've got life messages in this movie for everybody. Pg what had happened is a good friend of mine says faludi. Who wrote that book stiffed. Vaccine Skepticism Runs Deep Among White Evangelicals in US
"Health officials are hoping a national vaccine campaign can stop the spread of covert 19. But some groups are hesitant to get on board, among them white evangelicals. Surveys show there among the people least likely to say they will get the vaccine. NPR's Sarah McCammon reports on how pastors and public health leaders are working to change that among one of the nation's largest religious groups. In a certain segment of Christian escapology, which is just a big word for what you think will happen at the end of the world. There's this idea of the mark of the beast. For the uninitiated, it's bad, and if you want to go to heaven, you'd better not get it. And I asked the question earlier today. Is this something like Biden's mark of the beast? Because that is really disturbing. And not good. That's Georgia Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in a recent video posted online green is suggesting, and I have to say here without evidence a connection between that idea and vaccines. Jared Cornett is a pastor in Irving, Texas. And he's heard this too in some of his Southern Baptist Facebook groups, But to me, I have a very hard time from getting the bat scene. The mark of the beast, Cornett says. Thankfully, he hasn't heard that in his church, but he has run across some skepticism and misunderstandings about the science behind the Corona virus vaccine. Nationally. White evangelicals report a high degree of vaccine hesitancy. In one recent survey just over half said they were likely to get vaccinated compared to 64% of evangelicals of color. Both groups were well below the rate for non evangelicals 77%, and I think it's just this information as well. Cornett says. Some church members who oppose abortion also have moral concerns about how some of the vaccines were developed, including research involving fetal cells from abortions performed decades ago.

Some of the letters have included death threats from white fans who don't want to see a black man take babe ruth's record people have written that they're going to sneak into the stands with a gun and take matters into their own hands so while aaron knows that this might be the most important baseball game of his life. Should you buy your grandma a robot?
"This pandemic has made it harder for everyone to spend time with friends and family and that solitude can have real health consequences particularly for groups that are vulnerable like the elderly or those who live alone. But what if there was technology say a robot that could keep grandma company. Would you buy it. Seagal samuel tried to answer that question. She's a staff writer at vox and the host of the future. Perfect podcast seagal. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me so right off the bat. This seems like a very futuristic. Almost tech utopian idea you know robots keeping us company in our old age but like this actually exists right. Can you give us a sense of what this looks like in just terms. Yeah sure so. There's basically i would say. Two categories of the social robots any robot that is playing a social role of role that normally a person would be playing. We typically call a social robot. So i you have the ones that are just designed to give you company companion robots. They might come in the form of a cute dog or a cat or a baby seal or they might come in a more humanoid form a robot that will talk to you in english. But they're designed to keep you company the others are designed for personal care actual caregiving activities. Like bathing you or say lifting you out of bed and into a wheelchair and those tend to be a bit more high end and expensive
Justin Marks had a great Cup Series race on Monday
"Justin. Marx's on he is the team owner of daniel suarez number nine cup series car that led fifty eight laps on monday and ultimately finished fourth despite daniel saying he had no idea how to race on dirt after the race. Yeah i mean it was great. I was not there unfortunately out of conflict. I couldn't move for monday. So that was a heartbreaker but i was. I was hanging onto every every lap on my phone tv communicating with the guys during the race. So yeah i mean it was. It was a great day for our team. It really was. I mean we we have. We believe that we're capable of doing great things in this order and it comes down to just trying to prepare as best. We can weaken and week out making sure that we we all rally behind. Daniel give him a piece of equipment capable of exposing his talent his ability to the best possible possible level. So i think we did that yesterday. I i think nobody really knew what to expect. Going into this race but I know that we kind of relished in the fact that we could you know sort of leave our computers in the truck and kind of go racing old school and and you know look at tires and communicate with daniel and just kind of look at the race track and and make changes on the fly. I think the guy's really relished that lead in the bat and enjoyed that but it was really really really nice to watch. It's just nice nice for guys and a lot of confidence with big confidence builder for the guys and a special day.

"It's an incredible investment that they all make and the government makes in fall of us and i think it's inappropriate investment because once you get out there you are so alone and you have the lives of other people in your hands in your own life. Yes but also the lives of people who are putting everything at risk in order to warn us about an attack to warn us about something that is coming down the pike That would put their own life in danger or sharing. It was just a small group of us that were in this incredible a pressure cooker by at least during training we had one another to lean on and then once we were all out in the fields your sense of self sufficiency and your self knowledge really has to kick in. Because you're the only person who knows you at that point. Yeah i'm i'm just sitting here thinking about what you said before. About moving every year and starting in his school and being in a new country and developing the skill set of looking for the caretakers looking for the people who will make good new friends like the survival skills that were in a way. Or eddie taking root in you in a certain way like you had to start over again and again and again as a child and that must have created a great sense of self sufficiency that then was at least a piece. Psychologically of what made it possible to be that tiniest nesting doll yeah. I think that's true. I think my childhood was probably my first training course in many ways there are skills that i was given at the farm. Obviously most of what you're doing is is the kind of actual deep relationship building and how to keep your sources secure and so on and then you do the stuff you see in the movies. You know the defensive driving and land navigation. I qualified on the glock and the m four even though i never carry the weapon in the field but you know you do all of that kind of the sexy stuff you see in the movies but one skill that i learned.

When Do We Turn a Corner on This Pandemic?
"I'm trying to figure out is okay. A pandemic swept in out of china got loose out of some. I don't know lab so this virus that comes from bats is unleashed on the world and it it starts rolling across the entire planet earth and people begin to that because of it there's a rallying everyone gets together. So they they. They said where my asks states. Six feet from each other spread out. Don't get into large crowds. Went through that era that part of it. They finally get a vaccine for that. They know works. Take this and you won't get it and so that came but everybody's still wearing a mask steal scattered out. I'm thinking when do we turn the corner on this thing and say you know what we got back saying. You can take now and you want that. So when do we say valley turned the corner. The reason is because every time there's every time you turn a corner they put another corner. That's what you're missing.

Dr chris. smith joins me to discuss this now. chris. Thanks for coming on firstly. Why was this report so long in coming and there are a number of reasons but one of them was that the chinese were not terribly supportive. If you record just a few months back. The investigators were held up getting visas. Getting into china they were just stuck in singapore rages and then once they got there. It was very much. The staged managed thing and this is not happen for the first time in so many times before the they've been number of obstacles pushing the way which meant that. That was difficult for a start. "What's going on guys. It is tuesday march thirtieth and today we are talking about pay pal opening crypto payments for millions of merchants first up however. Let's do the brief i. This has gotten trickier as the price of. Bitcoin is nearly sixty thousand again today. This is announcing new contracts. Launching may third that are cash settled and sized at one tenth of one bitcoin. So why does this matter to me. Part of what makes bitcoin. Great is the democratization of participation that it enables buying. Bitcoin at spot is permission. Lists and what's more you can trade institutions. She's not in full bitcoin. This does remain one of the biggest misconceptions in one of the biggest reasons. New people to crypto. Find themselves turning away from. Bitcoin is not realizing that you can buy less than one. Full bitcoin that you can buy fractions of bitcoins. Regardless the 'financialisation of bitcoin could threaten democratization in many ways by only allowing much bigger players to play the game futures contracts that are smaller sized could one allow for a different category of investor to participate in bitcoin derivatives to to allow more diverse types of bats within that space and three reinforced. This notion so important. As i just mentioned that you don't have to buy a whole bitcoin. Now you also don't have to bet on the future of bitcoin with whole bitcoins
WHO team urges patience after 1st look for origin of virus
"How and when did the cove in 19 pandemic start this morning, The World Health Organization released its report on the origins of the pandemic. NPR obtained a copy of that report, which says the virus was likely circulating for months before a big outbreak in Wuhan, China, in late 2000 and 19, and that it did not begin in a seafood market there. The report goes on to call for further studies. Earlier this morning, I talked to Peter Dash Shack. He's an expert on how animal viruses can infect humans, and he was part of the team. That went to China to prepare this report. I asked him where the W H O thinks the virus originated. Well, what we're really saying is, we don't know exactly whether the one the one on seafood market in Wuhan was the source or not, it still could be. But it's also possible that other places within the region where the origin that the place where the virus first got into People. "Lots of people are a little weirded out by bats. But I have a neighbor who loves them and I wanted to know why yes wonder what are we looking at here? A multiple bat structures. When I moved in here I had bats in the attic of my house and I could never figure out how they were getting from the attic into the main house which they did regularly, this is my neighbor Tricia auto. She lives over the hill from me on one hundred acres of forested land. She called to introduce herself recently, and one of the first things she talked about was her bats. Years ago she had bats in Heraldic. So she built a few bat houses on her property to give the bats somewhere to roost besides her home. But it quickly grew into something of an obsession for her but I must have forty bat houses of one kind or another. Wow. So that's quite a quite a lot I'm used to seeing gardens full of birdhouses, but not bat houses. Some of Trish is plastic tubes, different sizes, and even different colors. Others would and lie flat against her Barn Wall with little narrow gaps for bats to cruel up into. TRICIA has become somewhat of about expert. I learned that the more structures I had available to bats the more likely I was to have a nursery colony. I'm also with Tricia to look for bats and I'm really hoping we'll get lucky. We walked down to a creek on her property. It surrounded by a wetland tool green reads. There are a couple of wood duck sitting on the water. We got all the makings for Great Bat habitat here, and now now we just need him bats. That's. Do you have about detector with you I have my bat detector with you with me. Detector is a pretty amazing gadget bat vocalisations the sounds they make well echo locating or communicating. So high infrequency humans can't hear them. So about detector as the pitch of the sound to make it audible. Tristesse trustee unit is from the eighties. It's like a hand sized box like something of an early Star Trek episode. Okay. Turn on my bat detector. We get some static, but no band noises. Tricia tells me we might need the Sun to go down a bit more as a sweet spot at twilight that bats love right before true darkness bats can see perfectly well, they're not blind and. When there's late like this, they don't need locate they can see. What they're hunting. So about maybe out and I may nothing on my detector until it gets a little darker. The back can actually be out here hunting but not yet echo locating. Well I didn't know that. So they do it by site times. As waiting for it to get a bit darker Tricia tells me about the bat colony she's built here. One of the key things is having a place where the bats can care for their newborns and nurse them. All bets get pregnant at the same time in the spring and the only have one pup per year. These bats have chosen one bat box as the birthing box in Tristesse Bon, and now she has about fifty west and long eared bats that use it and give birth there every year. And underneath that box, I have a sheet of plywood. And on the day that they all have their babies and they all have their babies simultaneously because their reproduction time like that. There's a little as their amniotic sac breaks. There's a little. Drop of water. Several drops of water a little splat on the board beneath. So you can't actually count how many babies were born that day by counting those little splashes of water on the board. It's understandable why TRICIA has this particularly deep interest in the reproductive physiology and behavior of She's a retired obstetrician gynecologist, sell the way bats have it all timed to all have their young on the same day or within a day or two in the colony? Always. You know made me think of delivering babies. You wouldn't want to deliver all those babies on the same day, but they do, and apparently they They even have some evidence that the bats will help each other having their young..

"With the stories. One early morning before they all went to sleep, his grandfather suddenly said. You No this reminds me of when my friends PIP vesper and Lucy. Bat discovered the bridge in down. There were hardly any bats there then, and it felt like we had discovered some kind of treasure. Indiana listened to his grandfather described the bridge, and how it sounded and smelled different back then and what it was like with so few bats. We were pioneers strangers in a new land building a life in a single crevice. He said in his deep grumbly voice. Indiana loved the story. And the next morning he asked for another and his grandfather obliged. And then some time later, when Indiana was trying to get his older sister to chase him, his mother had an idea. When I was a pop, I took circus lessons from GRANDPA's friend Miss Lucy Bat. She was a wonderful teacher in even though it's been many years I can remember some of the lessons. Would you like to learn them? The three pups loved this idea as they had memories of the bat circus that came to the bridge, and how old Miss Lucy introduced him. From that point on their mother gathered them in the early evening just after they woke up showing them. A bat circus exercises like twists and turns. They started slowly, but it wasn't long before they all got good at certain moves. Indiana loved it. He and his older sister were able to do. Some circus moves together flying very fast. He liked when his family would all gasp. ooh And And then some time later, his father suggested. I can recall when I was young, my brother Uncle Chick, and I would sometimes wake up early before the other bats and my mother would give us a list of things to find. They were little hunts, scavenger hunts. And since there aren't many bats around, we don't have to worry about getting near Bat, families. And then he gave Indiana and his sisters a list of things he wanted them to find like a bird's nest, a children's ball, a plum tree and a wagon. And, then they stayed in the general area of the Bat box, and try to find everything on the list, using their noses and their sonar. It was a lot of fun. They did it almost every night, and though Indiana was good at the game, he learned that his younger sister was incredible. He had no idea how good she was at finding things and he enjoyed learning that about her. He had always found his younger sister to be kind of annoying, but now he enjoyed seeing how talented she was. Living in tiny camp, wooden bat box seemed to slow things down for Indiana and his family. As Fun. As life had been under the bridge, it was also very busy in the pace was quite fast in. "That's a pretty school. Cool squeak isn't it and I think Eve who's calling in from all Vermont might have a question about what sounds bats make high eve high. So do you have a bat? Squeak question Yes sisters that squeaked question. Who's your sister elise? What's Your Bat? Squeak question why did they make that noise? Okay and then. Did you have another question? Like why did they evolve with waves? Like is there danger that bad to get away from so good questions from both of you bury? Let's tackle the bat squeak. Why is it? They make that noise the noise that they make they actually make a number of different kinds of sounds the one that we were just listening to is the sound of them echo locating to find food. So those little squeaks. That we hear as little squeaks are actually thousands of individual little noises. That are made so fast that to us it. Sounds like a squeak. And that is their echo-location sound that goes out. Bounces off of everything and comes back to their ears and they can tell what it bounced off but the other kind of noise that they make is noise that we actually can hear. It's noise of them talking to each other. Bats have a very complex language structure and they actually talked to each other. They say things like hey get away from my food. I was going to catch that bug so two different kinds of sounds one. We can't hear that's their colocation. And the other we can hear so they have two different things that to us. Sound like squeaks. Zoe in New Mexico wants to know. How sharp are bats teeth? That's teeth are tiny and very pointy and they are very sharp They have two different kinds of teeth. Just like we do they have mowers in the back and they have sharp little incisors in the front that they use when they are catching bugs the mole molars they used to grind up their food and those sharp little teeth in front. They use to catch books. All right let's go back to Eve's question as well about wings but let's also bring in. Taus WHO's calling in from Oakland California? Taus you have a question about wings right all right. What is your question about wings? Listen go ahead go right ahead. Taus good that timeline. More have wings right so very you got even towels who are both wondering about this wing question again. So bats have been around for about thirty million years and thirty million years ago in order for them to avoid predators. This is what we are thinking in order for them to avoid predators which are running around on the ground trying to eat the bats over time the skin between their fingers grew into wing membranes and allowed them to take flight so when they were able to take flight then they figured out. Hey I can catch the bugs that are flying around. And they fly around the batch chason user echo-location to catch him and that's why they have wings so very. We have some questions that are topical for you as well. That people may be thinking about right now because of other things they've been hearing in the news so let's get to Oscar. Who's calling in with one of those questions from Bethlehem Pennsylvania? Hi Oscar high. So so. What's your question? How and why did that? Cause the Khurana Virus Good Question Oscar and Colin who's nine from Atlanta. Georgia has the same question for you bury and I don't know the answer but we keep hearing that the the covert nineteen corona virus may have originated in bats. That is a question that is being studied a lot right now. One of the theories is that a bat which has a very strong immune system in is not affected by things like corona virus or E. coli or SARS. Those viruses don't affect the bats and one theory is that they had this virus in them and the virus got onto some other little mantle in China and that little mammal passed it to other mammals. Who passed it to humans. So it wasn't that the bat coughed on a human and that that's not how it a transmission woodwork. That is correct. The Bat did not pass it directly to humans it went from the bat to something else and from the something else to the humans just by way of transmission. What's and but that? That is being studied very hard to try and make that determination. Where did it actually come from? Yeah it's a good question and you know for those who are listening if you're interested in bats that's one of the areas something like that. You could study if you study bats. You could study how they use echo location. There's still a lot to learn about bats in the world right. Bury there is if you think back ten years ago. We didn't even know how many bat species there were. We thought there were only four or five hundred different kinds of bats in then researchers started really studying bats and they realized. Wow there are a lot more different kinds of bats than we ever thought there could be. There are more different kinds of bats and there are horses. Cows cats and dogs combined. I could talk with you all day berry but we are going to tackle beavers as well in this show. So I'm GonNa let you go and say goodbye with our. Thanks for teaching us about bats. "For Vermont Public Radio. Means I get to go out with scientists who are studying why a few years ago I went out with some researchers who are trying to figure out why one colony little brown bats in Cornwall Vermont. Were doing really well despite this sickness so I got to see the bats get trapped and studied. I want to play you a little bit of sound from that trip. Because you're going to get to hear what a bat sounds like. And what Wildlife Biologist Eliza Bennett thinks these bats might be thinking about when they get captured just like I got three parts of them. Okay girls got him. He's log on right now. You picture game. Fish must feel like some kind of alien experience to them describe their alien experiences as these bright lights and then all of these invasive body examinations opening and and of course. That's exactly what we're finding. Bright Lights is there. Were just out foraging tonight and then this very strange bizarre scary thing happens and then we take all sorts of measurements on them and then we let them go and you know I think they must say to their friends. This crazy thing happened. I was just flying around in the bright lights and I was abducted and all their friends are like right. Bats are thinking about that. Maybe they've been abducted by aliens when they get captured by researchers. Luckily the researchers are only there to try to help the bats and make sure that they all survive and one of the ways to help bats is to learn more about them and care about them and find out how you can make sure the bats in your area are staying safe and healthy. So let's talk about bats now with Berry Gins Linger very is a bat advocate. And he and his wife. Maureen founded the Vermont Bat Center where they help educate people about bats and also they rescue bats. The last time I talked to bury he had some bats hibernating in special hibernation area in his house that he and Maureen have set up very. It's nice to talk with you again. Thank you so what were you doing today? Because we're talking to you here. Live on the radio at one but I understand. You've actually been driving around the state already to deliver a bat to travel downstate to somewhere else. That's right I left early this morning and drove down to Middlebury Carry hand picked up the bat for me and drove it from there. All the way down to Dorset There were actually three bets in this group and all three have now been successfully released back into the wild. Why did you have them to begin with? I had them because they came out of their hibernation cave way too soon right in the middle of winter when it was snowy and freezing cold and there were no bugs to eat so the biologists that were checking their hibernation area found them and brought them up from Dorset all the way up to us at the bat center in Milton. And so you keep these bats safe for the rest of the winter as long as they should be hibernating that's corrected and this particular group stayed together through the winter. We kept them healthy and fat feeding them. Delicious meal worms and When it got to be Spring and the bucks started coming out we said okay. It's now time to turn them loose back where they came from so to turn them loose back where they came from. They had to go all the way back down to dorset so very before we get to our callers and emails and we have a lot. So we're going to get through as many questions as we can. Let's establish some information so that we know a little bit about bats as we have this conversation. What are bats they fly? But they're not birds they fly and they are not birds. They are the only flying mammals they're mammals just like dogs and cats and humans. We are all mammals and bats are in that group of mammals but they can fly and I can't no. I wish I could too. But but being a mammal means they have for or hair they they have their babies drink milk. They give birth to live baby so all true about bats. All that is true about bets. No additives no eggs. They don't lay eggs If you can think of a bat doing all the same things that we humans to Except they can fly. That is so cool. I'm and how many different kinds of bats are there in the world. Well in the whole world there are about one thousand four hundred different kinds of bats but up here in Vermont. We only have nine keys only nine. Can you name them all? We have little Brown Bat. The Big Brown bat the northern long eared small footed the tri-colored the hoary bat the Red Bat and the silver haired Bat and Indiana Bat. Then the that's way forgotten. Yeah but see. That was the only one I could remember. So we've got nine the two of us there we go. Let's go to one of our calls. Here's Max who's calling in from Elmore Vermont. High go right ahead. What's your question for? Berry last back. I'm that bride good question very wide. Some suck blood. That is a very good question. That's actually don't suck blood on find an animal. That has an injury. Now keep in mind. There are no blood sucking or blood. Drinking bats anywhere except a little area in South America so all the bats that we have up here in Vermont. Don't drink blood. But when they do they look for an animal. That is injured. That might have a little bit of blood on it or they might sneak up on us a chicken that sleeping in a tree and make a tiny little nip in their foot so that a little drop of blood comes out and then they lick it up but they don't actually suck the blood. Well that's good to know and coroner from Boston also wanted to know that question but we have other questions about what bats eat. So you've just said Berry that some bats Do Drink Blood Benjamin in Massachusetts wants to know. Do all bats eat fruit? All bats do not eat fruit in fact there are about two hundred and fifty different fru of oars fruit eating bats but there are over seven hundred insect eating bats so there are way more bats that eat insects than there. Are those that eat fruit? Are there any meat eating bats? There are meeting bets? We call them carnivores and they eat things like mice and frogs and lizards things that they are able to catch the obviously. They couldn't catch a big huge thing. Like a Moose. 'cause they're way too big but they can catch small animals and lizards in little frogs. So those are the carnivores and there are others that drink the nectar from flowers. Well that's important. Isn't it very because we often think of honeybees? I when we think about pollinators. Maybe some people picture hummingbirds bees all bats also very important as pollinators. They are very important Here in the United States we do have some pollinating bats and if you think of Pictures that you've seen of out West in the desert and you see these great beautiful cactus growing out in the desert. Those are growing there. Because the bats pollinate those cactus flowers to make new CACTUS and they've been doing that for millions of years. Kids are listening to but why broadcast for curious kids. And we're talking with Barry Gunslinger. Bury the back guy about bats in this first half hour of the show. And then we're GONNA talk about beavers but if you have a bat question you can send it to questions at but why kids dot Org. Evs calling in from Maplewood New Jersey. Hi How are you today high? Do you have a question for? Berry one go for it. Why can't back in the dark? Why can't they can like how good I'm glad you said it that way. Okay so even wants to know. Why can bats see in the dark and very we have questions about this from other kids to like Teddy in Maryland? Who says how do bats see at night very good questions both of you? Wow so when you go out in the dark all of your seeing is done with your eyes when bats go out in the dark. They see with their ears by doing. What's called ECHO location? They make a noise that goes out from their mouths and bounces off everything around them and they hear that echo coming back and they can tell the difference between the echo coming back from a house or a tree or a car and the echo coming back from a tiny little bug and they usually don't try and eat cars or trees but they do try and eat bugs so when they're flying around at night they use their echoing to find where their food is. Well let's play the question on that that we have as well because I wanNA make sure we get this in. Here's an echo location question.

Because I'm trying to tweet out to watch the concert so I was. I was watching the concert and the draft with the sound off And so by the way the jets did very well but my favorite my favorite moment of the draft. If you're an eagles fan you'll appreciate this so carson. Wentz is the quarterback of the Eagles two times in the last three years. He's got injured where he's missed the end of the season in fact two years ago he missed the last few games and the postseason and his nick foles had a takeover right so Carson Wentz. I think you don't have to tweet me. I believe he missed the end of eighteen. The beginning of nineteen and the end of nineteen so he's been injured a lot at least in the last couple of years so they drafted a quarterback this year probably too high for a backup because he's talented. The guy's name is jalen hurts. H. U. R. T. S. The guy they drafted to protect the guy always gets hurt is named her. Name'S HURTS I. That was my favorite And then you before the draft the the the jets have a new general manager named Joe Smith I think Joe People Screaming It's show hold on anyway so they were asking him before the game about one of the players on the team. I don't have the audio but I thought it was. I thought it was hilarious. They asked him if the if he joe Douglas. They asked him if he had spoken to. Jamal Adams Jamal. Adams is one of the guys on the team who they. There's been talk about their. Maybe trading in the draft may be right so they always on sports show and they said. Have you spoken to Jamal? Adams and the response was no. I have not spoken to him since the last time we talked. That makes no sense right now. He wasn't talking about talking to the guy on the radio he was. I know he was talking about Jamal Adams and he said I have not spoken to him. Since the last time we spoke right lessons last we spoke. Yeah well of course. He was assuming that that person knew that the last time they spoke was. But it's not the case with everybody was scary. Here's the last time you spoke to your mother. I haven't spoken to my since last time. I spoke right but but then I would be assuming that you knew the last time that is but it doesn't matter right. You like what was? Let's talk talk tour. Oh it was the West door right. Thank you very much. Thank you Joe. Douglas appreciate that So I don't. I don't know how to process this. I'm GonNa Chalk this up as to as to coincidence not not irony okay. Did you happen to see what the twenty twenty United States quarter looks like the tails side of the quarter you. It's on their brody No they changed the back of the quarter all the time. Yes the twenty. Twenty quarter is not a joke folks combat my God King Bat. Oh my God. I'm looking at it right now. It's for national parks. It is a it is a Samoan Fruit Bat. I cannot believe they did not like I. I know it takes a lot to stop the mint and halt the presses. Like all lot but somewhere in the last couple of months even though this was probably slated from last October November long before there was co Vid did they. Didn't someone say let's stop does not notice. Nobody could have halted this one an unfortunate result to have the twenty twenty quarter commemorated on its tales by a bat and it's too bad there upside down and they're disgusting looking to. Oh it's it's an honor of the Samoan Fruit Bat. I don't WanNa fucking even look at that. People are GonNA think that quarters are bad luck. You Watch this year. There's going to be an aversion to people carrying quarters with them okay so as currency. It's got a bat on and does this happen. So these quarters were released in December which is cove in one thousand nine hundred roughly can recall them or they could like stop printing the stop them in. Let's let's continue the rest of this year. Okay these are replace it any other species of things that they find the parks go. They have to keep it in his bat called on. It's five twenty twenty quarters at recognized National Parks located in American Samoa Connecticut. Us Virgin Islands Vermont and Kansas either way. They're national parks all over. So I I imagine a GonNa do all the pox when they're all done And so it looks like Salt River Bay is Virgin Islands and Vermont is something billings. Can't read the first words covered in this particular picture. Billings Rockefeller a tall grass prairie in Kansas and a National Park for art in Connecticut to Guy Painting a House and American. Samoa is to bats..

"So that the researchers could all watch 'em on TV Marley and they did this for more than a year so they just through all of these back strangers together into one cramped micro house. I mean Ha Hive will. There was some thought behind how they introduced the Bat to this makeshift. Okay I they put into bats. You didn't know each other at all so similar to how a teacher on the first day of school might pair you up with another student. You haven't yet met exactly. And then the researchers dropped one stranger bat in with three other vets who had lived together before so similar to an exchange student from another country coming to live with a family in a new country. And then these two groups together and fight on them for the next fifteen months who spied on them spying on them for science using cameras. The researchers recorded the vampire bats behavior to see how they socially bonded or made friends with each other over time. And what did they find? Okay so I. They noticed that the bad who put in by themselves as pairs seemed to be the first to bond or to form relationships. Just like you and me G FORCE. You'll bet it finger story and mindy. How could these researchers actually know that? These bats were bonding well. They noticed that over time the bat started grooming each other looking each other's further to give each other baths then..

"Their family members to phone and MARFA mouth when she was a bank me. Oh that's true. I didn't grow teeth until I was four. Well when you think about it I guess it's not all that out of the ordinary. I mean. There are actually a lot of animals that do this like bees. They regurgitate nectar for the other bees in the family. High and penguins regurgitate food into the mouths of their baby chicks. Reggie says that his mom used to bar food into his mouth when he was just a little squabble. Oh that now but what Dr Carter and his team discovered was that these bats will not only barf up blood into the mouths of their family members but and this is kind of the butt of the whole study. These researchers found that vampire bats will sometimes share their hard earned blood BARF with bats who are not part of their family stranger and the post office want and shave in Naven. Thank me these days are so rude. So let me get this straight. We know that vampire bats will share their blood meals with other bats in their family So what would make them share their blood meals outside of the family especially if it meant less for themselves. Well that's what Dr Carter and his team wanted to find out. Oh yeah so. What did they do? Well they decided to set up an experiment. Oh My love a good experiment so I the researchers set up their own version of a tree hollow in.

"Hello words welcome to another episode of the dictionary. I am going to start. With some words I word is bat. Bat second form of transitive verb. No see it's just a regular verb missed. Vb there So this is a verb from the thirteenth century we are going to start with the transitive definitions number one to strike or hit with or as if with a bat to a to advance a base runner by batting to be to have a batting average of number three to discuss at length colon. Consider in detail now we have the transitive definitions one eight to strike or hit a ball with a bat. One beep to take one. Turn at bat to to wander aimlessly now. We had the third form of Bat. It is a noun from fifteen eighty. This looks more interesting. Any of a widely distributed order of nocturnal usually fruit givers or insectivores flying mammals that have wings formed from four elongated digits of the four limb covered by a cutaneous membrane and that have adequate visual capabilities but often rely on echo location a wonderfully specific definition of the Animal Bat So let's see the the order. The Scientific Order is corrupt. Era C. H. I. R. O. P. T. E. R. A chiropractor Let's see fru give us. I think means that they eat fruit and insect everest means that they eat insects So an I I always when I learned this. I thought this that this was amazing. Their wings are not like the wings of a bird. Their wings are their arms and fingers. I mean I guess. Technically the wings of a bird are their arms but they don't have fingers they just have they have a wings Bats the the first part Is kind of like a little arm I think but then the rest of it is literally their fingers that spread out with this membrane in the middle Which is just very cool So what else was I gonNA say Then the ETYMOLOGY is probably an alternative of the Middle English Bach. Ba k. k. e. which is of Scandinavian origin. It is akin to the old this old Swedish. I think I really need to make a permanent marker of where this pages Old Swedish The deputy deputy old Swedish not Baca which means bat now. This is interesting because not baca. Looks like it's one word but the Baka is in B. A. K. K. A. is in Italics and the not an A. T. T. is not in Italics Is Old Swedish? Not is that a different Abbreviation no I don't think so So I don't know what that is. We are going to move on to the fourth form of Bat. This is a transitive verb from circa seventeen. Eighty seven to wink especially in surprise or emotion as in never batted an eye. Also the synonym flutter as in batted his eyelashes Interesting example I appreciate that They put a male Batting his eyelashes but stereotypically. It's often a female who bats their eyelashes. But like I said Yeah let's mix it up. It doesn't have to be a female who bats their eyelashes This is probably an alternative of the second form of the Word Bait B. A. T. E. Which is coming up in this episode So don't go anywhere now. We have be all caps. This is an abbreviation for Bachelor of Arts in teaching. Now we have batboy one word. Noun from eighteen ninety seven a boy employed to look after the equipment as bats of a baseball team and There's probably some bat girls there I would assume Are we even going to see? Yep Yep we'll see a bad girl later Now we have the word batch B. A. T. C. H. It is the I form. Noun from the fifteenth century. One the quantity baked at one time. Synonym is baking to a the quantity of material prepared or required for one operation specifically a mixture of raw materials ready for fusion into glass to be the quantity produced at one operation to see a group of jobs as programs that are submitted for processing on a computer. And whose results are obtained at a later time as in batch processing. I've played around with this a little bit like in Photoshop or illustrator. There's other programs that do it too. That's those are the only ones that I've used it in. Where if you WANNA do sort of the same action on a bunch images like when I was doing wrote a scope animation? I had a bunch of images and I needed to do the same thing like create later. Save it out as this file Blah Blah Blah and there's hundreds of images so you just tell a program do these things Blah Blah Blah. It's super easy. Just runs the batch and then at the end of that To See definition it just says compare to the synonym time sharing number three a quantity as of persons or things considered as a group This is from Middle English Bach or Botch B. A. C. H. E. which is akin to the old English by Kahn. Which means to bake now. We have the second form of batch. It is a transitive verb from eighteen. Sixty three to bring together or process as a batch and bachelor is a noun third form of batch. It is a variation of Word Bach or Botch B. A. C. H. and Well I mean I know Bach as in the composer but I really don't remember would-be. Ach is so. If you WANNA go learn that again go back now. We have the first form of Bait B. e. It is a verb from the Fourteenth Century. Transitive definitions our first one to reduce the force or intensity of. Synonym is restrain as in with bated breath number two to take away. Synonym is deduct. Number Three is archaic to lower. Especially in amount or estimation number. Four is also archaic. We have the synonym blunt. Now we have just the one entrance give. Definition it is obsolete and we just have to synonyms diminish and decrease. Oh I just remembered I took a lift home. I think it was Just a few days ago And he was He was a guy who came from. I think it was either Venezuela or Brazil. Sorry I feel terrible that I don't remember which country he was from. But he's been in America fear for a few years and He's on a work visa and he's been taking esl classes. And I said I this might sound weird but I have a podcast where I talk about the dictionary. I read the dictionary and I've always thought that this might be useful for people who are learning English as a second language So I I mentioned it to him. He looked it up I don't know if he's listening. But Hey if you're listening. I think his name was noises If you're listening I hope you're you are enjoying this. And if you're listening to this Close to when the time this episode airs. I urge you to go all the way back to the first episode and Listened from there And you know if there's any other people out there who are listening to this podcast as Sort of an. Esl lesson A I am not a credited class. You can't get credit for this But I hope that it's enjoyable and I hope that it's teaching you something Or if you know anybody who might get some use out of this You know tell them about it. I just it just popped in my head so I had to tell you are right. We have the second form of Bates. It is an intrinsic verb from the fourteenth century so in Italics it says of a Falcon or Hawk and the definition is to attempt to fly off something as a gauntlet in fear to attempt to fly off something in fear and then as a gauntlet. So it could be flying off a gauntlet which I guess is the thing that that goes on the hand again. I think I mentioned this before. I always thought the gauntlet was something else. But I think that's right so weird Are This is middle English from Middle French Batra which means to beat and that is from Latin but wear A. I don't know what it means. Though maybe to beat now we have bat eared Fox. It is two words but the bat eared is hyphenated This is a noun from nineteen thirty. A large eared yellowish gray. Fox that inhabits arid unforced in areas of eastern and Southern Africa. And the scientific name for this large eared yellowish gray. Fox Is Otosan. Mega Lotus Ot O. C. Y. O. N. Second Word Mega L. O. T. I S. now. We have the word is it by Tokyo. Thinks Bateaux B a t e u There could also be a double T. And there could also be an ex at the end So there's four different ways. Oh I guess with an ex That would be the plural form of Bateau So this is a noun from seventeen eleven any of various small craft especially a flat bottomed boat with raked bow and Stern and flaring sides. This is Canadian French from French from old French bartell from old English bought which means boat. And there's more at the word boat. Now we have Bait Bait C. N. Yeah I thought it was eighteen. Because that's how it's spelled but it is betsy and capital B. A. T. S. A. N. It's like Wells named after a Guy Bates. So that's why that's why it sounds betsy and It is an adjective from eighteen. Ninety five characterized by or being mimicry involving resemblance of an innocuous species to another that is protected from predators by repellent qualities as unpalatability as in a betsy in. Mimic. I'm still a little bit confused. I guess characterized by Resemblance not as bad as predators. So it's basically like a camouflage right. Is that what I'm understanding? I duNNo. My brain is broken. So this is from Henry Walter Bates who died in eighteen ninety two And he was an English naturalist So this was coined three years. After he died it looks like now we have bat fish. All one word Noun from eighteen o eight any of several fishes with winglike processes especially any of a family of flattened pick Hewlett bony fishes. The family name is odd. Gok follow die of the order. Lo Fi fourmies. Oh my God I know some of you are smacking your thing So the first word is oh. Gee C. O. C. E. P. H. A. L. I. D. Oh Kok Phil die and the order is L. O. P. H. I F. R. M. E. S. That's partly why got confused because the double I know fee for me is so. That's about fish now. We have bat foul. It is a An inch transitive. Verb from the fifteenth century to catch birds at night by by a blinding them with a light and knocking them down with a stick or netting them that process is called Bat. Foul play it is spelled. B. A. T. F. O. W. L. so foul is like the bird Or birds are foul To catch birds at night by blinding them interesting I guess people do that with bats to they they I don't know if they blind them but they try and catch them with a stick or a net or something when they're in their house So would that be called Foul Bat? Probably not last word for this episode is Bat Girl. Two words Noun from nineteen thirty seven a girl or woman employed to look after the equipment as bats of a baseball team So it's the same definition as Batboy but batboy is one words and bat girl is two words and a bat boy is just a boy not a boy or a man and bad girl is a girl or a woman So yeah that's kind of sexist. You'RE GONNA call a woman girl You could at least call her a bat woman Are there ever bat men who you would call a batboy right? You probably wouldn't do that. So why okay So I think I am going to. Pick Bait. Cnn as the word of the episode Because it sounds similar to camouflage maybe later when I'm listening back to this understand it better There was some good ones in here though. I I'll have to see if I can post pictures of the the various nouns like baton bat eared Fox in Bat fish and all that Okay Oh today I think is the You could call it. The march was at the March Equinox. we did just have daylight savings time. I think I talked about that Yeah March Equinox. It's also called the Vernal Equinox Where the amount of light is The the amount of day and night are equivalent which means that our days are getting longer here in the northern hemisphere in the southern hemisphere. Your days are getting shorter. I think that's all I got to say. I thought I had something else but that is it. Maybe I'll remember later. Probably not thank you very much for listening. This has been spencer dispensing information into your brains. Thank you and goodbye..

Basically, I think it's a category within another tax category. But there's lots of different kinds of claves. But they're in the claves grow tiff, which is mammals with scrotum, though, we are not instructive for away a little confusing. Why not different ours is different? I think that our scrotum evolved separately from bat scrotum 's. But I'm not sure I just know that we're not in scripture bats are so all screw tiff evolved from one ancient scrotum, correct. Definitely came from the genes contained in one ancient scrotum. Yes, that's beautiful. That's been some poetic about. Put sorry I interrupted because I wanted to talk about scrotum does anybody wanna charge me for that? Vats have screwed them's part of the definition of about. The only mammal that actually flies. So there are other mammals that can glide they have membranes between their limbs, but bats have modified arms essentially that they can flap and fly through the air and don't just sort on like a flying squirrel or Kaluga or something like that at all bets coming back ancestor as far as I know, you know, screwed I think they called him. This. They're the second largest order of mammals, which I thought was interesting by number of species second largest. Yeah. I thought they were largest to rodents. Yeah. Oh road in Chea. Like, those are the two main categories of that food, and the drinking blood vampire bats who are off in their own corner than the game all other bats, really bad name. Basically, right. Also, bats carry a lot of diseases, and especially like, viruses and stuff that are transmissible to humans, which probably helped spread the vampire myth. Okay. So we know what bats are. Yes. So there's two facts one, drew fact and the other panelists have to figure out either by luck or wild guess, which is the true fact, if we do we get a Hank book, if we don't then Stephan gets that ANC book, Devon, what are your facts back number one? Where do you do the recording of the bats? Where do I do the recording? Yeah. Well, actually, Michaela, I live in Mesa, California, which is about twenty miles from the Tijuana border in Mexico. And so I actually work into locations. I work at the net museum, which is insane Yego and it's the natural history museum. And then I also work at the Tijuana river bat monitoring station. And I'm mostly in Tijuana because I do a lot of field work and we go out and and record mostly they're in at the NAT at that's pretty much hands on stuff. Really. What we're focusing on right now is we want to make sure that we're keeping a close watch on the different species and how they're changing, how the population is changing. Can you tell me how many different species there are right now? Well, gosh right now and it's a rough. It's kind of a guesstimate because we're constantly finding new species. But right now there's about twelve hundred forty species. That's a lot about. It's a lot about sets a lot of bad. How many of those species will you find the Tijuana. Well, we actually have found about fifty nine species. They're very good. Do you have some more questions maybe for Matt? Sure. Can you name ten species of bats, good one. If I tried, I probably could. It's a Little Brown bat, big Brown bat. You have the Mexican short tail bad the vampire bat. If I can keep going. I do know that there are only nine in New Jersey though. Species native to hear, do vampire bats, normally attack humans, not very common misconception, and it's probably a lot of the reason why people are afraid of bats. They always think they are going to suck your blood. But no, they do not, but they will if you. Called vampire bats, then. Because of their structure, and it's just common to where you know the movies are, and that's where they get the reference from twisting from the movies. I am. I'd like to know more about the bat houses. Yeah. Are they split level ranch houses? There are many different sizes of them. Typically, the biggest ones are three chambered and we install them on trees to promote the habit. That's bad. So the nut flying into your house or living in your sophists anywhere. It also promotes their breeding because they'll they'll have nursery colonies in them and it, you know, they over thousands insects and nights. So that's the one of the benefits of having pets. No. What a vampire bat favorite animal though, suck the blood of I believe it's a sheep now. No. Now. Sheet is not as you. That would be w e in case you didn't know what I was saying there. So I get it. I get it now. So what does the animal? It's a cow. It's a cow. I'll come onto cows basically, sheep. Do you have any other questions McKay like gale go for it? This is for Rita. What was the first time you've you ever saw that was like when you got interested in them like the first time you've ever saw one in the wild and he's like, oh my God. There's an actual bat in the wild. Well, the first time I actually saw when I was in Africa, so it was probably about four years old. And I do remember that. Were you afraid of it when you saw it strangely new, but you know, I mean, I was in a country where there were lions. You know, all kinds of the animals nearby the border truly dangerous. And so I just of had there were pretty awesome in because they, they just are their incredible to watch. Actually
