"And covert in Bastrop with assistance from Tito's homemade vodka joined by Ben Clements panda have fun our last hour with Scotty and John Paul and Judy Rankin and we look forward to another great our yeah well up real quick though I don't know why but every time the R. bar opening music comes on I think it's like the roaring twenties or fixing a bowling if we got a chance because throws me off I know some twenties again this sounds like we're still in a prohibition and we're like you legally drinking alcohol and like some kind of a speakeasy it's great music but I say it's a good idea not much so I would just want to say something about that Kael be J. says you have to go to this candy music and to try to pick a song that is about later copyright it is so darn hard so I don't know welcome Europe for next week we'll get some new music mix that is a good way for you to if this is the music we got to start talking about the PBA we gotta start talking of all and we got to figure out who to go to bowling is because or else for frauds maybe we could take this to the the the bowling alley next week real good adorable because a lot of our save somebody from the movie king fan will come yes and can do that for first millennials it's alley cats but that's a different story a lot of things to discuss tonight on the the end zone club but I know we want to continue our discussion with John Paul white bear yes who was named of the top assistant golf coach in the nation this week which is a high honor and of course everybody who loves golf is hurting because this week would be we begin the second round of the national tournament it was going to be John Paul out in Arizona this year right Greyhawk golf club in Scottsdale Arizona in Scottsdale so in the Longhorns are gonna be there because a lot of orange much of the year we're number one in the nation so I have a tough tough deal on that I'm gonna open up in this I know this is probably the most broad dumbest question what is it like being a coach in college a college athletics D. one what's it like it is great yeah being around being around a competitive environment being around young people on a daily basis it's very energizing and then you know as a former student athlete myself at Texas it's so interesting to always think of what I was like I think about what how I viewed my coaches and how kind of how it's come full circle bit being being a coach at the D. one level especially a place like Texas is a huge privilege how much coaching goes into it because you know we think of you know as you say college basketball college football there's a lot of you really got a teacher and coach but it can't golf these kids come in and they're incredible offers they can go there and shoot sixty four any day of the week how much actual teaching and coaching is going on a on a daily basis one of these guys that we're recruiting these days have they come in with their own relationships that come in with their own instructor account maybe a fitness guy maybe you know maybe even a yeah you know they may have to instructors wow and so we we kind of become a part of their development coach fields are both you know we both played collegiate golf professional golfer both PGA of members of the PGA were capable of jumping in and assisting and doing whatever we need to do from a structural standpoint but I think the biggest influence that we have on these guys is that we are helping them become better players that's what I think the middle name or something like that there's yeah everything that goes into playing good golf being a you know golf course management preparation for competitive golf helping them to think and continue to develop as people as players and and we're happy to be we just want our guys to succeed and and so we kind of jump in in little ways or big ways sometimes does that bring a little bit of a headache though like if if you get a star player coming in say I'll call hammer I don't know if he's a coach but if he has an instructor that he relies on his that bring a little bit of clashing way Kate my coaches tell me do this but my instructor told me to do this is that you have to live with my sister go to tell me yeah yeah that kind of not not really not at all we we we know these instructors if we don't know we want to get to know him and so we want to understand where they're coming from where the students coming from and then we'll ask our players you know Hey what do you what do you been working on with your with your instructor you know call works with camera McCormick and work your speed yeah right you know we're interested to know what they're working on we know how often they're working and we are supportive of that so now occasionally if things are going well with the guy we might make a suggestion we might say Hey you know what maybe it could be time for a change but we we believe in those relationships and we we also believe in relationships that are put their players had as from a young age we want them to to maintain as much continuity in their developments possible phone lines are always open on the engine club five one two eight three six zero five ninety that'd been John Paul labor with its got a search for this it was interesting because when you got to campus I met you apple weeks when you got to campus Sano had Maxwell how many years ago was that it was all of nineteen eighty nine eighty nine so that's that's a long red hair I had red hat red red beard how different is it that now from when you got to campus because I met you when you were I guess you were there on campus a month from from down in Houston the son of the great J. A. bear how different is it golfers today than it was for you thirty years ago golf has it has evolved as you can see it you know on the PGA tour it's involved in an way in there and the fact that equipment has come a long way the balls come a long way golf course architectures come a long way the way these guys look in there and get in shape physically it's different by the end of the day it's still golf it's still not getting the ball in the hole faster than the other guy still about you know dealing with your own battles inside your own head and playing you know trying to put a good score up there but the these guys are so much more it Vance at this stage there we were we might ahead two three four guys on our team when I was in school that were really serious about golf and if you ask nine and you know ten out of ten guys on our team whether or not they they once on the PGA tour all ten will raise their hand and all ten will tell you they're going to play on the PGA tour for ban on one of the members of John Paul's team won the British open who should've won another British open Justin Leonard Michael Cooper who I still think it's one of the finest golfers I've ever been around who if he would have gone that route as a professional golfer he would've won on the PGA tour Harrison Frazier who was a great golfer on John Paul state who won on the PGA tour so that golf team thirty years ago when I first met John Paul it was a loaded with talent but like let's like Texas's today we were a good team you know what if you're the university of Texas you need to have anyone when you want to be you wanna compete for national championships you got to have some real horses great players and you won't have to death in there you want to have like alternately seven or eight guys that can go they can compete for those top five would take five to a tournament where real playing back then was it still UT golf club or you don't know you take off what was not there I did not ask you dad I'm asking I'm sorry but if those are you know what we primarily play nicely talk to coach Jimmy Clayton today on the phone he was my coach back then he was the guy between George Han and the coach fields and our primary facility was the hills of Lakeway and it it's time we tell you the hills of lake way was a tremendous golf course it was top two or three rated course in the state of Texas and if you could play that golf course well you you're good but we played there Barton creek Austin Country Club and we used to host the tournament in the fall and Maurice Williams so we would spend a whole weekend of Morris Williams are we hosted term there called the Harvey Penick invitational and we renamed it among our team the ice box open because it was usually the first weekend of November and of the first big strong front of the year we come through and we had to deal with that but we we we first met at Barton creek at the five zero golf course when Jimmy Clayton had a fund raiser for the golf team were guys who supported the golf team would play with it but the golf team and raise money for the golf team that that day we played the first time I met John Paul Fazio foothills or no okay no houses out there there was there was Barton creek Country Club and that was about it and we played with St Michael who was a member the Chicago Bears who won in nineteen eighty five the Super Bowl champion and I got a beret lemay who had raced steak house here in town on Lamar of great steak house and a guy named James who was with the Miller lite distribution and we played with John Paul who is a freshman from Houston we knew you know the story of John Paul's father J. A. bear in we had a great day in your eyes were open that day too two guys from Austin I think the you know Steven Michael from what I remember was still playing he was right the end of his career and they had just changed the rule on for college players being eligible to go into the NFL draft after three years removed from high school and you asked him you said Steve what do you think about these these juniors now being eligible to go into the NFL draft that's fine bring up them pops but he had like a little dog dog in his car he every time you hit a bad shot he cursed the greet the superintendent for putting the pin where you put it naturally and I was scared of him I was scared all day long the last we played was number five at Barton creek Fazio a par five hole which is reachable if you had a big drive and it was a scramble and James and I hated that kind of torch green and Stephen Michael headed towards a green and John Paul was like two forty five from the hole and Steven Michael with his dog barking said Jean Paul hit it on the green John Paul brought out like a nine iron to lay up yeah because none of them had even laid up in Norway yeah we're just we're we have a somewhat it's a blind shot something in place with teams right where there's something for the team at the end it is seen player Steve what Michael says but as John Paul hit on that day grade and John Paul hi and I walked up to it you know what you better get your three without because he series he may come kill you you know it all the great and John Paul stayed over that shot for like fifteen seconds and hit within three for a kick back eagle and speak but Michael was on that day you didn't break you tell them main article yeah that was a great day well great day all right we need to take a break this is the is club on kill Jay radio brought you by United heritage credit union thank you buddy trader.

J. dot com nine thirty one time Jeffries and don Friday here all the time to don good morning five one two eight three six zero five ninety Hey I want to update you on a circuit of the Americas and the the big food drive they had over the weekend where people could drive their cars on the track cool thing was so cool they collected more than two hundred thousand dollars in donations which will provide one point six million meals to central Texas that's extraordinary yeah this is the first time they've done this in they see they have more than seven thousand vehicles in the first ever coda food drive this past I didn't realize they had seven thousand vehicles show up and that's not all I don't know if they intend to do this but it sounds to me like it we need them to do this again next year yeah yeah obviously this is something that people really were interested in not only of course helping the food bank but just having that opportunity to have your own car out on that F. one track twenty thousand people four hundred dogs on the track seven thousand cars and they described it as a once in a lifetime opportunity to take a drive on the world famous three point four mile track one dollar they say can provide up to eight meals according to the central Texas food bank and it was a true success yeah the food drive here's a quote from cofounder cota founder chairman Bobby Epstein this is a food drive was a great success it was so nice to see the people are safely come together and support such a great cause especially in these uncertain times nobody had come in contact with anybody yeah you're just driving yeah I show it to it could have been a better time for that because obviously people or want to get out the house you want to do something new and different and they can stay in the car be safe and also help out the food bank and go on a little adventure there that's that did what a great success that is also a major job code that was over one million meals one point eight million that's crucial yeah it is so your money goes a long way with the food bank lets us we've had some calls here let's go to what Laurie she's in Round Rock on the time to don show Hey Lori hi Laurie I am calling in response the gentleman from Elgin yeah they got a call earlier he was upset about the limited purchases of meat at his local H. E. B. they are now we actually buys from the local ranchers farmers market there you go everything is process everything is processed locally everything is name everything is local so when we start that was happening with ATP and we generally don't buy from each of the last half when it comes to meet last week after we get the order Accern me through the farmers market and my question the screen from the gentleman who lives there now again there are ways here are five of these plants down there which are open to working why didn't he just buy as much as he wants level yeah that's that's a good call that's a good point these farmers markets have been open and out there in L. good there are several I can't think of two or three local providers out there in that area alone yeah he if he I hope we still listing yeah and I'm sure there's a great farmers market in the L. Gion area of Bastrop for sure right there's one out there close welcoming us with this is something that I would have thought of show guy yeah he had neither and so Laurie might've just help the guy out and and and help a local rancher at the same time yeah yeah yeah and we leave a little bit of pressure at your H. yeah I would want to know that however they got to know how to find Jack I don't know how to find me in the thing is for this to be completely accurate they're going to have to ask for your ID in the mayor for some reason it's not said that he's got and now he's got to be smart enough to know that did you want to know because we have so many well yeah I don't know I got you but I guess there are "Now Bastrop county has seen its first death of a man in his fifties and held in a total of eleven cases there eleven more cases in Caldwell county so why does the numbers were currently dealing with this morning in a lot of people locally specially Dr mark S. Scotch with the city of Austin saying we still need to stay away from each other and I will bring all that up because coming up Sunday it's a Palm Sunday more than forty people gathered this past Sunday the First Baptist Church in Sutherland springs that parishioners say their willingness to attend services stems from surviving that twenty seventeen mass shooting in the wrong church that left twenty six people dead and twenty others wounded according to gunny Macias it's all these bullets weren't going to stop me then no viruses going to stop me from going to church if god wanted me he would have taken me then okay that's what they're saying that the church there not governor Greg Abbott stay home exempted religious services because they're deemed essential that's that's the word this morning I really hope that people don't take advantage of that I really really do and I hope that although G. no church leaders and pastors and preachers in the everybody this could have influence over anybody does not encourage people to show up on Sunday listen most of these churches are streaming their services live in if you don't know how to do that as somebody who can show you how to do that because it it it's police do not show up at church on Sunday now I have been encouraged churches to hold a remote services when possible adding the Parisian errors in the church must be six feet apart a pastor Frank Pomeroy who lost his fourteen year old daughter that shooting he opened Sunday services with a prayer expressing gratitude for congregating getting together he goes on to say the lord thank you for this opportunity to gather in our house to be able to openly proclaim your righteousness so they're still get together this weekend and I know a lot of church folks here locally across central Texas plan to do the very same thing highly reckless highly reckless in in in that one of the the the problems here for so many people their church family is there for a lot of people it is their family that that is that's their connection to the world and and I get that but these are unusual times and again I'm sure your church is probably live streaming there there not all do but some well the it and if it's not your church and find one that is fine what is instream their services on this Sunday so make sure you had to do it if you don't know how to do it it's really important that pastor to step up at area churches to do that yes there's a way to do it in and the technology is very easy he could easily do a live stream on his Facebook page right yes it and you could get to it got older folks in the congregation of the younger folks could you know maybe help them make that connection to watch yeah and you know what and and that's one thing that really concerns me because for a lot of older folks this is again maybe they're there for their family and this is their connection to to the world and so they might be more tempted the older folks to get out and go and they're the ones that are most at risk there is a mixed signal here should the governor cancel churches yeah sure the governor step up and say no gatherings at church I was really really disappointed I think I mean that really go that really flies into the into the face of the fabric of America were free people were free to congregate and we're free to worship so he's kind of if he's going to do that that's gonna be an up hill battle I don't think I'll I think there are some not a lot but some church pastors they're gonna say we're getting together however there's dirt I bet there's there's many in this area that say now is the most important time to get together to pray to find a way this virus this is you know Easter Sunday let's face it that's the Superbowl for for for churches and this is their big day and this also might add this is a day when the the plate is passed in the plate is full and so they they blot of them probably want to take advantage of that as well show I think it's highly responsible yes we have freedoms but unfortunately right now your freedoms could kill yeah I'd love to hear from a church pastor locally because I I know you're robbing your preparing what you told your congregation are you able to meet in smaller groups to provide distance maybe you know have multiple services that way fewer people could show up maybe a sign you know like each congregant okay you're gonna come to the nine o'clock you're going to come to the eleven o'clock you come to the one o'clock we're gonna keep it under ten people how are you getting by or you gonna follow the governor's orders and maybe you know keep that distance of six feet between each other I think he's been keeping a distance of six feet on Sunday what would be highly reckless listen yes I know that that this is a very very very important to so many people out there but the thing is it's not like food where is our grocery stores have to stay open so we have food you will survive if you.

"Been the county judge in Bastrop for about eight years the senses happens every ten years so this is poppy's first for a small community like Bastrop the census is a way to make sure they get enough money for things like transportation and education for all the new people their hobbies as preventing an undercount a lot of work actually if you don't have a lot of resources we work with what we've got it would have been nice if if the state of leadership and recognize that local governments needed some support but we'll we'll make it work what he means is that the state of Texas had an opportunity to really plan for the census for example they could have invested in it like California which plans to spend almost two hundred million dollars on the census since our Blanco a democratic state house member from a past so try to convince other state lawmakers to spend at least a fraction of that unfortunately the bill that I introduced house bill two five five and the budget writer for fifty million dollars did not receive the type of bipartisan support that that we had hoped for and Blanco says he thinks he knows why I think of Republicans are fearful that a more accurate count disadvantages their party Longo says the state's growing Latino population which is increasingly voting for Democrats is a big threat to Republicans redistricting is next year which means lawmakers will soon begin drawing political maps an undercount of Latinos in the census could mean they will have a smaller political for print to Bastrop county judge Paul poppy who is a Republican says his community is at risk of not getting all the resources it needs as far as rule counties go bash drops right at the head of the latest on on fast rowing and the projections are these that in the next ten years were projected to grow another twenty five percent or so in the next fifty years were project to grow about four hundred percent because Austin is pretty much filled up my DSL aside with United Way says this is an issue facing the whole region silicide says local leaders in the smaller communities around Austin have had to figure out how to provide services to a growing population that can't afford to live in Austin there are leaving brief scene what it means to have very limited resources and they know that I know under account could translate into cuts in programs and that would be that would be exactly the opposite of what we would want and this is more than just the state being short on cash for vital services Texas could also miss out on getting more seats in Congress which is why poppy says he's frustrated that leaders in his own party didn't take this as seriously as he has people are coming to Texas a thousand people every day are coming to Texas and settling here for jobs because our taxes are low in art there is clean and all you know all these things will brag about well if that's the case then why are we count them all either way poppy says he and others are getting the word out and making the case for why everyone should respond to the census from P. R. news I'm actually Lopez in Austin this is NPR news it is three forty two this is KCRW the California legislature received one hundred eighty one discrimination and harassment complaints in the last year that was many more than expected the cap radios Scott rod reports leaders of the capital are optimistic in a letter obtained by cap radio leaders at the capitol disclose the number of complaints filed in the past year it was higher than anticipated but they say that's a good thing it shows staffers are comfortable coming forward Senate pro tem Toni Atkins in assembly speaker Anthony Rendon declined to comment for this story it's hard to compare the number the past two years there were thirty three complaints in two thousand seventeen and seventeen in two thousand eighteen but those only included sexual harassment the legislature's new workplace conduct unit formed in the wake of the me too movement also investigates discrimination and retaliation it may be hard to measure progress moving forward the legislature will release substantiated complaints against lawmakers and high level staff but the Senate and assembly would not say if they plan to release any additional data in the future that's cap radios Scott rod reporting from Sacramento today and press play we've all had dreams that I felt a little too familiar but what if they become so vivid we can no longer distinguish between them and reality you can see the same people over and over again and like strange places I'd never been before description just feels really weird like really scary I'm Alan brand that's the premise of Alison breeze new found force girl she's with us today at noon on press play on KCRW and coming up later this hour.
