"I've just seen like the microscopic changes in the skin. I've seen it make a difference in my skin So i'm a huge fan of their peptides but that part of your mom's routine via lasted one. not actually. Yes oh you maybe it was. Gosh that was from a while ago. Because i don't know if she's still using that now She she was using last in the skin nectar. That might have been in her routine video last year. That one's awesome. Okay all right. So then sunscreen after moisture and from screen. And i'm like a little neurotic. I used to different sunscreens. Use a sheer a sheer sunscreen. To make sure. I cover my ears and my neck. 'cause i wear a lot of white and like if i use a tinted sunscreen on my neck it's just so messy so i use a share sunscreen and I've been really like the bioscience. Buzzed thinking lane sunscreen The eleven by venus by by venus williams. They sent me there sunscreen last week and i am obsessed with that one so good so yes. Have some type of fear sunscreen. I also like the larosa say. Anti leo's the non tinted one and then my Than i fought with attended sunscreen. And what am i using right now. I'm using the skin superbowls The skin circles. It's the matt physical sunscreen. One is awesome. I'm also huger tinted helius sunscreen and i'm also a huge fan of the skin better skin tone. Smart water pretended sunscreen. But there's somebody sunscreens. That i love the rankled elta elta. I wear to Both their share and the tinted sunscreens. Yeah ultras great. Okay and then are you done. And then i'm done and then. I do my makeup and then i'm done whole other mchugh it. Gosh it probably takes me doesn't take me that long. It takes me like five to ten minutes. Okay michael. You're proud at this point. Yeah sometimes like i'll do like the essence and the vitamin c. And like i'll go like make tea or something and they'll come back and do more. Yeah right because don't you have to take some of them. You have to take a break in between like you have to wait five minutes for like one of them to set in. So yeah right yeah. That's a whole another thing too like how much to weight between products. I do think it's ideal. I mean if you're in a hurry you can. It's okay like if you have to just put one on top of the other. That's fine but i do think. Ideally it's good to wait like at least a minute between applications And if it's a product that you really like like you know like my skin cynical side of i wanna make sure it's like set in really well before i put it in my other stuff but I would say the general rule of thumb is like a minute tone. Unleash what about like body stuff like what body oils do body moisturizers like. What's the best. Yeah what should we be doing. So the best will in terms of you know how how moisturizer. I think it's also really important to so moisturizing. Like right after you believe is the best So while your skin is kinda damp. That's that is the best time to moisturizers. And i look for things that help build your skin barrier. So those things can include. Sarah maids like oatmeal. I'm a huge fan of the vino. body moisturizers huge fan of savvy because of the because of the ceremonies and die method. Cone is also a skin protectant. Kinda feels things in I'm also a big fan of this other company. They sent me stuff. And i've been really loving. It's like necessar- They make some great moisturizers. But i mean and i tend to if you have dry skin. I tell people use thicker moisturizer. So there's like three categories lotions creams that joint mints lotions. Are they had the most water. So they're the most lightweight the evaporate more easily but if you have drier skin. I recommend using creams which are thicker they come in jars or tubes or white men which can be more messy but i do think are the most occlusive so that those are like aquaphor survey healing ointment bassolino even but i would say happy. Medium is cream survey cream oils oils play so oils i mean oils are also nice to. I think it also just depend on your personal preference on like the feel of things Some oils i think are better than others. Interestingly sunflower oil is really good for your skin or better. I would not recommend using olive oil on your skin I am actually a fan of cooking oil on the body. I think that's good and then you know a lot of other. There's a lot of other companies like like bioscience does make a scaling oil for the body. Which i think is amazing. I do have that in love. That one I might not olive oil just out of curiosity. It's fine but there was a study that actually compared to olive oil and sunflower oil and shop. All oil just wasn't as moisturizing with no badge for sitting up bad. Yeah okay so before we get to your nighttime routine and you mentioned t. What about like throughout the day in terms of diet or things you try to avoid you. Drink does alcohol play effect coffee all of those things that we like. Yes my gosh coffee. I feel like a controversial subject because first of all everyone like addicted to coffee. And but like but i'm also seeing issues like coffee. If you drink coffee that can be. That could be stressful on the body to. Because i feel like coffee is like you're you're you're tapping into like the way to say it. It's like you're using energy that you may not have so it's like your body can become more tired after you're done drinking coffee but then on the other side copy. People say copy has a lot of antioxidants. Has something called polyphenyls which is potentially supposed to be like anti-aging so my general rule of thumb with coffee is. I think it's fine to drink. Just don't drink a ton of coffee. I wouldn't drink more than like two cups today. I have had such a love hate relationship with coffee just because my response to copy has been so variable. Just love hate relationship since like college med school because i will crash with coffee sometimes. It won't work for me. Sometimes that makes jittery. So i have just now switch.

"Got this tick-tock story that i think anyone with the brain is a little bit woke to this. Chick is on. A plane claims that the dude sitting next to her was texting like very openly with his arms extended texted his girlfriend. I'm stuck on the plane next to this fat ass and girlfriend roll back like teller about kito and the girl is like very not fat. She's very attractive. Just feels so fake. Seemed like the perfect middle seat passenger on the plane. Totally even not like this made me so angry to see in the headline because like us fats. Like we know we're nobody wants one of the worst. I generally took a southwest flight a couple of months ago. And you pick your south west. The next you've got that seat next to he was the only seat oprah I'm well aware why. I know why i'm well aware of it very conscious about it. Nope because they should do that but obviously well aware of it very conscious about it texture friend. Got this fucking fat guy but this bassolino especially with all happened at all. No she'd needs this happen but it's lotion thing because really she said to. I just thought of a month ago. I didn't know that she waited a she say months ago because if she said what happened yesterday there'd be other people think i won't even go about getting over here and taking the the of the phone out and it's very easy to read trou- hope it's fake but all it's not it's still do it. Yeah i mean it. It's not nice. It's you know we're on south west. You know what. Next time on. So i'm go. It's pretty awesome. Yeah i was gonna say that might be something maybe on the inside. You're like oh well. This sucks but also the day after the indy. Five hundred party mile wide club was mile wide. That's one of the things you wanna be saying. Someone is a mile. Wide is just so much so bad because like i'm telling you charging to like that's the worst experience prospects is the yeah elevator where there's a fart elevator to leave. Well you don't trust elevator over the thing about this happened back in the day if there's a foreign in fact john and that's necessarily true skinny people people for a lot colin he could fart. You know. I mean we haven't milk. He's far all night long. Do we have the automated front seat. That's yeah see. I'd rather not have that if it meant more relaxing on the plane because at least cd mostly everybody with truth. Not that bad the whole stranger aspect going to the gym. That's the scary part of being fat. Say this might be say well. Why don't you just might be more say always just when you see a funeral. And it's like big strong is carrying the coffin. I always respect the dead and a lot more. That guy he was. He was built sturdy. Some tool yeah. We see it when you see a little skinny dude carrying a coffin. You're like fuck. You might funeral one day you know. I hear you're confident. Maybe we do. Viking funeral in norway i will shoot up arrow of five pretty sick. Love it that's taking to chick-fil-a is when we get it from the office. I did shit act. Came out and said regime took. I did it. You owned up to it right away right. I took two i whatever. "Now there a software company and what they do is the automatically help subscription companies increase the retention of their customers. And it's very interesting. They had the world's largest data set. Which i'm sure he's going to talk about over. Twenty three thousand companies are connected to their platform so they definitely have a data at scale. It's a great conversation. No subscriptions is on a lot of brands. Minds are trying to figure out if they're not involving subscription they want to get involved those that are involved to figure out how they can maximize ltv. And that's why patrick on today. So patrick welcome to e commerce bassolino. Yeah thanks for having me excited to jam and talk about data subscriptions and everything in between you got it. So i'd mentioned tiny bay the top of the show but the great to kinda here in your own words. Exactly what you're attempting to do you know and doing quite well. I might add quite a few brands that are connected to profit well and are seeing tremendous value out of the technology that you offer. But let's talk about some of the problems. I that your platform solving for owners. Yeah definitely so. Our whole mission in life is to drive subscription revenue automatically so the grand vision for profes- well as you plug it in. You don't have to do much of anything except for set it. Up and then automatically you know drive revenue. So we do that in a couple of different ways the way that we kinda got started on this journey. I know we're going to talk about a little bit. Is we have this court. Product called profitable metrics where you plug in your subscription management system stripe recharge whatever you're using And basically that gives you access to all of your free Or of your financial metrics so things like ltv things like the amount of emirates you have your growth rates growth rates by plan segmentation all these other things and We give that away for free. Because we're able to study that data and then use that data those lessons to basically fulfill that mission of driving. You know subscription revenue automatically. And the way that we do that specifically is one that i believe you mentioned is really around retention so we do all of the tactical aspects of retention. So we handle credit card. Failures were the best in the world at recovering payments in terms of recovery rate we do term optimization. We do a bunch of other things that sure. We're going to talk about in a bid because things that brands should be doing and then the other kind of area of revenue that we focus on pricing so we work with brands like butcher box and a bunch of other consumer brands that basically you know were helping them with our software essentially understand how they should be monitoring their products and another way to put it especially when talking to You know ecommerce brands specifically as we do everything but the acquisition part. So there's all this content all this software that helps with your acquisition. We handle all the other aspects of growth. So yeah it's a little bit of a little bit of an overview and happy to go deeper in anything notable so let's dig in a little bit about just the prophet well brand itself i mean. There's always a founder's story or journey. And i believe it's a lot more than just are ours. Not more just the selfish part of running a business in wanting recurring revenue. I mean i think you know. it's always the upside. I know that there's a significant upside to the brands that make the decision to use profit while products. You very small slice of the pie for your technology. The upside always goes to the brand the end of the day. I don't i know there's a bigger story here around why you build its. Let's talk a little bit about nanny. Your desire your co founder desire and just the expertise the brain come from the whole idea around all of this. Yeah definitely so. I don't know how far you want me to go back If you want to go back to the the dairy farms of wisconsin. I'm happy to. But that's where i grew up but my background's in kana metrics had math. So i clearly had a lot of friends as a child or at least. That's my dad joke but there were called spreadsheets so anyways i started my career after studying economics and math in college at i worked actually in the us intelligence community. So i had this you know. Hey i want to go save the world. You know the military wouldn't take me. Because i don't have a sense of smell which is a fun fact and then basically You know. I got recruited to go. You know quote unquote save the world and obviously i can't get too deep into that that job. I mean except to say that. I always joke. I jack ryan's desk job. So none of the fun stuff action movie stuff just like the desk job working at an essay which was a good time. It's the most fulfilling job i ever had. But that's where. I got a really good appreciation for district. Tj thinking as well as like leverage right like how do you use. Limited resources are limited data in order to go for some sort of and i didn't love how bureaucratic working for the government is being punked kid. So ended ended up in worked at google for a little while and you know had a similar story of using data for leverage but also not loving the bureaucracy of the then thirty thousand person company and so i wanted to kind of jump in and do do my own thing mainly because send my twenties no big obligations thankfully didn't have any student debt which i know a lot of our generation kinda has to deal with and started working actually worked for dc brand called jim vara so that was the first startup ever worked at. And they're basically your were basically a competitor to a blue nile so customizable jewelry and so the idea was is you could go to their website. You can get any gemstone for any designer. Any colour metal. You can kind of customize it and i was given the job of figuring out pricing and so what was fascinating is you know because of all the customisation. There's like one point six million different skews that you theoretically could have and it's like not only a big you know cost engine problem because you don't wanna sell things for less than they're worth but it's also like how do you. How do you advance things. And there are a couple of really cool findings like for example. We found out really kind of anecdotally. That returns were always like simple pieces. Like something you could get any jewelry store. Those are the things that got returned. Anything that was super customized never got returned and so we use that knowledge to basically accelerate prices. Meaning raise prices on anything. That's very customized. So little things like that. That was kind of the thought of an idea in basically with prophet. Well i wanted to jump in and it didn't quite start off as you know this whole subscription mission. It started off kind of helping folks with pricing but we started to realize. Is that when you look at the world of subscriptions and keep in mind you know. Eight years ago wasn't as obvious. Today you saw that there. Was this this commerce model you know. Subscriptions where for the first time in history we had a way of charging were the relationship with the customer was baked directly into how you make money so instead of that corner store that grocery store or whatever. It is trying to convince you every week with a coupon to come back and buy your milk there. You had this thing where it wasn't like you had to convince your customer to come back. You had to convince your customer to stay which is a very very different relationship and when we started kind of digging into the data what we started to realize. Not all of this was linear of course but when we got to the end we started to realize that like brands especially in ecommerce love to talk about relationships. Right love to talk about. We need to keep them around. I know how much money we spent a branding. And things like that. When i was at jim vara but it was one of those things where we don't necessarily take the obvious that we should be doing one having a subscription in general. It's not as hard as you would think it doesn't have to simply be subscribe and save although subscribe and save does help a lot or at least it's a good starting point but even in addition to that making sure that once we have that relationship using the mechanics of that subscription to keep that customer around by making sure our pricing a really good place and ultimately that our retentions in a good place and i would say that we've made a dent in this mission of helping people use the mechanics of subscriptions. But there's still a long way to go because most mostly everything's focused especially in the world of e-commerce let alone all subscriptions on just acquiring new customers let alone not not keeping them around so yeah that's kind of the ramle version and you know happy to go deeper in anything..

"Didn't wanna kill people and he conflicted about it so we don't. I don't know if you and i saw that. In the episodes we watched I did not see the conflicted feelings but it sounds like there were a number of other episodes where he didn't want to kill people but he had to do it to survive and so now that's pretty normal in the vampire genre twilight or with Buffy the vampire slayer what other vampire things are out there. I mean i feel like they all now have at least some version of the conflicted vampire the lost boys. Not every vampire is conflicted. But there's usually at least one who is. And i don't want to and but i have to now and i can't like i lose control so this is the first time was in pop culture in in that sense. It's pretty influential Okay so made an impact. And maybe maybe the time like or maybe if that were new to us today that would feel really revolutionary. I think that feels pretty commonplace now but maybe if the same show came out today with modern production values. United be like. Wow this is really interesting. Yeah yeah. I mean i could see that or at least that we would know of it and be like oh cool. Maybe we wouldn't watch it but it would we'd still notice the innovation I mean but this show like you were talking about how it looked classic soap opera. It just had such tiny budget. And one fact i read was that they put plastic wrap and bassolino around the edges of the lens to make like a dream sequence. Look nick of fuzzy. Oh i know exactly what you're talking about now that you mentioned it okay. Okay pretty clever. And then also i read a. I didn't find any on lake recorded. Find any clips of it but I did read quite a bit about because it will. The production time line was really strict and they didn't have a lot of money so they just shot the show straight through with an audience and there were just tons of mistakes with lines and stagehands. And mike's and all kinds of stuff. I didn't see any in my episodes but i saw several Where peo- you did and they yes what what were they like. I mean they were very professional..

Thinks Jehovah's Witness Think Scientology, which led the extreme example in America. Of, RELIGION NOT I. Consider that more colts. Vary. Jehovah witnesses a very good arguing that Quinn. And I respect them for that because they actually know their shit. Then, not just when I was a Christian I i. talk the talk a lot, but I didn't necessarily. Know my shit to back it up. I couldn't argue it as well. Whereas I. Remember this is. A funny story so years ago when I was a Christian me at our Church Had A relationship with a traveling evangelist. Do you know what I mean by the time traveling evangelist Jerry? Is that someone nude around and Prejean give speeches, etc, around basic slash slow. Yeah, around around the world. He mainly was fake in the UK, but this particular traveling evangelists. I'm. Technique to get people to talk about Jesus and it was particularly effective one. He managed to have a lot of conversations. He managed to convert a lot of people. And I think you'll understand why. He essentially would walk around the town center of an area, carrying a massive cross. A life sized crossed the one. Jesus is thought to have been crucified. In reality, it was probably cruised tree, not A. To. Very nicely shaped pieces of wood stuck together, perfect right angle, but anyway. Yeah. This guy would walk around the town centre, holding this massive cross and start conversations with people me. My friend decided that we wanted to copy him. We didn't have the massive cross, but we were walking around town centre, and we were trying to have conversations with people. That, we thought were prompted by God to convert them to Christianity. And I can remember. We had a very successful night. Because we went down to the that was this alleyway that we felt God was calling down. He wasn't calling down. The high. Street with lots of people is calling us down this alleyway where there was nobody. And we were yeah. Okay. Good scoring is down here and we saw this fire exit. And we thought okay. God's telling us to speak to somebody at that fire exit, and this woman pokes had out of the fire exit and start smoking a cigarette. And we kind of tentatively woke up and we check out, and we keep going up to like talk to her. And then we chicken out, and eventually she goes back in like we've got. We've missed John's. We walk around the corner. We see window cleaner God's telling us to talk to the window later radio, which just the next person that we'd spoken to don't think God was just kind of going like Oh. Yes. Yeah. But Anyway we talking to this window cleaner. and. Turns out that he's a Jehovah's Witness. and He. Starts talking to US and challenging what we're saying, and challenging our understanding of the Bible, and says well actually if you read it like this, it says this and he gave us a track and we found ourselves. Not able to argue with him and not able to kind of come up with anything account to him because what he was saying made so much sense, and so we had to go after we'd done that. We went to our pastas house. And he had the traveling evangelists there and we had to them, and they prayed for us and. Exercise the demons outs of us. Okay? This is why I probably have to ask questions item. You're sat in a chair. You may be lying down on some kind of ritual taking place. I hope on Rye. It wasn't. I say excesses them. It's probably a strong word. He was yeah they. The way. The we kind of I guess they. They saw the teaching as demonic. They didn't see as we were possessed by Damon, so it wasn't a. Like an excess an exorcism per se, it was more praying against the dark. Magic now. The dark forces were. Working. Everything was a battle when I was in the church. It was a spiritual Bassolino. Everything was evil either full God, or against God very black and white. Yeah? Very divisive in a way Definitely, this is a good thing this about thing. It's simple. It was people a puff says actually there's no incessantly. We know this is the thing today. The thing, and if you know, show you have these people to go to. Also that I would argue what you were doing though is oppressive. Is I I hopped. Those falls I'm in sentence on I. See people preaching this preaching I think what you're doing. If you treat me. This was Ri-. You, people would come to you. It would be clear daylight that you wouldn't have to do this and actually if what you appreciate the fact. was fought. It was so clear we won't on it. See I I. I like what you're saying, and it makes sense. I'd argue the. We, The you saying that we we'd know we'd see it. Done think we would we. Will is something is nice to think like Oh. Yeah, we'd. We'd see if it was the one tree religion we'd say we'd go to. But in reality. I think we you walk down the High Street every. If. When we can walk down the High Street and go to shops and stuff like that. The fact that there's still homeless people living on the streets. There's still like. Inequality in this world. I don't think I. I think if religions have anything right. It's the caring for the poor is their priority. And I And I think if. If, we don't if if society doesn't I guess what I'm trying to say is that. I think it's naive to believe the. The if if there is a an answer to everything. If there is religion, there is good and his all powerful, the everyone would just immediately say and go to it, and there wouldn't be any questions. I think people. Are, in some ways inherently selfish. and. God I. Don't know why I'm saying that that's the Christian me talking woo. Do I think the people that on south answer. ooh, ooh! Awesome people some people. Black white this. This department religion is not black and white. There's some people are horrible people on the. Shelves and incubus sheets by anything else as long as that running sixty grand a month, and they can pay for the next holiday and they can get the new driveway. Happy and there's people that will give more than they should to help. People Ashes how nature works we all different is a massive spectrum. On the issue of religion some times says we'll look you. I was in a bad bicycle accident a few years ago. That left me with ain't with normally road rash on my cheeks. A Split Open Chin which required stitches pitches and some broken bones. Some of the road rash was pretty deep but didn't require stitches so it sounds like it might be similar to what happened to the listener. I was given given something at the hospital that I think was prescription strength. Bassett trason it worked wonders. See what your doctor recommends but just wanted to say their stuff out there that can help prevent scarring on your face. It was amazing and honestly things went from pretty grim looking to normal in about a week. I've also read that yield vaseline can help prevent scarring starring because it will help keep the area from drying out and scouting interesting. I always thought a scab meant something was healing yet but I think for I I think specifically for scarring you do wanNA keep it moist. My daughter had major bicycle wipe out and had that Chian major scrape. That didn't need stitches. That was pretty bad. And it's been healing for like a month. Oh we did not do any of this. "Have an email I keep. I've I've been listening to your podcasts. For about six months or so I've been meaning to email you. Nearly every night will putting on my bedtime face. I think of something. Kate mentioned a while ago regarding her addiction. To vaseline Vaseline I too was vastly addict since childhood. About two years ago I started replacing quote toxic self-care items with safer sustainable alternatives. And I have two suggestions suggestions for Kate. One wack selene and or to healthy shelley. By third day naturals. Both products are readily available on Amazon. I find them both to be pretty comparable to or even better than Bassolino without the petroleum. Give them a try. My Lips Ne'er shall touch Veselin again and so dory doesn't feel left out. I have a quick story for her and her husband my current partner. I met back in two thousand eleven. Due in part to Matt Myra we we're in a long line at comic con has been that's excuse me. Yes Dory's husband. Check out a recent episode in which we interviewed him. We were in a long line at COMECON to see a live recording meeting of the podcast. That Matt was on at the time I noticed and we ended up sitting together chatting and going out for beers that night after the convention and many long distance conversations. It's my partner ended up moving across the country to be with me and we've been together ever since for eight years in a time when it can be hard to meet people. I am so thankful for communities that come together around a shared love Phantom or in this case podcasts. So sweet such a sweet love story. I told him when I was going through a Notes for this episode. I read this and I called Matt over and I read it to him. Someone touch they found found love at a podcast recording. Yeah they said they had like they've had proposals at live shows Yeah there's a lot of love in the air that's cool. I like take that as for Vassil. Lean yeah as for these facile lean alternatives. We're not expanding our seats, vast population. So, yeah, I worry that things have changed dramatically. The opportunities are nearly is great for an unremarkable kids, such as myself now as they were, then this tariff. Buying for society in general because I read the algebra of happiness from cover to cover because it's a really great easy read. And of course, linked to it in the show notes as we do with every book, you, and we'll throw your sort of synopsis video in bedded in the show notes as well. But one thing that really stands out that you're certainly not trying to hide in the book is you kind of showed up to school smoked a lot of pot. It's college students. Do got a two point two seven GPA went to business school and then started a bunch of companies. And it had a lot of great success. And now you're a professor at stern business in New York. This is a big shift from somebody that literally, you'd have been lucky to install shell. Right. Maybe it'd be the supervisor of the shelving company by. Now if you didn't get a back injury. Right. Yeah. It's, it's human nature to credit your character in your talent with your success, and then credit or blame the markets for your failures. And I have no such delusions the generosity of California taxpayers. And the vision of the region of university of California are. Why I'm sitting here speaking to you. And I'm not saying, oh, explore yourself, it'll all work out in I was immature. I had I smoked too much pot. I drank too much. I didn't have the discipline. I didn't have the rigor that kids need to get ahead. What is much more competitive economy, so I'm very honest. I try to be honest about what I think the route is our that our facing our young people, you know, whether it's a problem or not, it is a, I acknowledge it is a different world. But people have a tendency to rub Bassolino over the lens when they look back at our life. And, you know, the things again, the things that fried me as the primary reason reasons, I am successful are no longer here, and I'm a talented person. I'm not a modest person. I put myself in the top one percent, which puts me in a room, the population of Germany. So seventy five million people's top one percent of our planet. And I have a lifestyle. Income opportunities health care opportunities to impact others in a positive way that is well ahead the top seventy five million people, and it's because of two reasons. One being born in America into an education system that love the remarkable, and it's a huge issue now that we'd seemed to fall out of the unremarkable, what we've decided in kind of the seventies and eighties, and I would argue through most of the twentieth century America's collective goal was to make millions of millionaires. There was a general feeling even if you went to work for General Motors Proctor and gamble, if you're good citizen you play by the rules, new save some money for a one K, by the time you retire, you could be a millionaire, and we created millions of houses that were millionaires and it feels like through tax policies through education, only the best and brightest from around the world. Get in and most people can't afford to go to the schools. Now, we've decided the collectively our new goal is to crown the first trillionaire that we are obsessed and we have this kind of dollar tree of billionaires innovators. And we have decided that it's okay and even great to have people worth the GDP of Norway..
