It Only Takes a Few Instigators to Create a Riot

"During my time with the NYPD when I was a police officer they did a lot of training with crowd control And one of the things with crowd control they used to teach us is that these large groups of crowds and you know it doesn't always have to be a riot right It could be a baseball game a football game a rock concert There's this feeling of collective energy It's not always a bad thing Now in a riot it obviously is But do you know what I'm talking about with this feeling of collective energy If you've been there you can sense it It's like you know what it is but you can't really describe it It's like you're feeding off the energy of the guy next to you and it's like one big pulsing organism at a basketball game when everybody's going crazy right Well the same thing happens with these riots in civil disturbances People get emotional and they get excited And you have these instigators in the group and typically when they hit this violence flashpoint it's always a small cabal of instigators who do it They have the bull horns are screaming and yelling like freaking lunatics call the bag throw The Rock throw the bottle They're handing people stuff It'd be a real shame if you launch this brick at the cop over there It's always a small group of instigators that

"Duke at Ohio State, I'll have to stay with the humongous opportunity there. Kind of wondering if there might be a little bit of a let down. I'm not going to go out and say that Ohio is going to win the game. I'm just not going to be shocked if that happens. But they certainly have got a huge huge challenge. The other game to know for Tuesday is 5 O one Florida state at 6 O perdue. So we'll have we'll have true definition and clarity on Paris's ranking situation here. If duke and Purdue both win, Dustin remain ahead. If perdue loses in duke wins, it's not even it's not even a discussion. But if duke loses and Purdue wins, you know what's going to happen there, Purdue will leapfrog the blue Devils. It will be a matter of will GPV confident enough if they beat a 5 one four estate team. The boiler says I mentioned before, have never been AP number one. I'm going to guess their number one. I'll say their number one when the polls refresh on Monday. But how about this? Did you know? The Florida state seminoles have won 12 consecutive overtime games. Did you know that? I did not know that. It is an NCAA record. The Florida state seminoles have won 12 in a row with at least one bonus session. The most recent one came over this weekend. I won't trivia time you something basically like this. But if I had to trivia time you would ask you who did Florida state beat on Wednesday night? How many guesses you think you need before you get there? I need one guess, Boston University. He's on it. Boy, you're talking, you're talking to a man who was in studio for inside college basketball that night. There we go. Florida state won that game in overtime. Now here's the stat of the damn week, okay? The last time Florida state lost in overtime trivia time. Wow. Just guess the season. You guessed the season, they've won 12. This is the first time, by the way, the listeners in real-time and I get to see your guests. I'm gonna give you a good 30 seconds before I give it up while pairs things. No cheating. These people have the ability to cheat. The last season, Florida state lost an overtime game, what season? It was clearly the 2011 season. Are you going 2010, 2011 or 2011? 2010, 2011. Incorrect. You want a second guess? No. Okay. Mark it down and it was the 2015 20 1520 16 season. It was at iOS. Since then, went to Wall Street. I did the math. I consulted with our friend Ken Palmer, to make sure the math was accurate. I took the probability of every single game starting in overtime. There is a point 2% chance, a one in 500 occurrence that a team in Florida state situation will win 12 straight overtime games. One in 500 chance, FSU. 12 in a row, how phenomenal is that? It's the most phenomenal thing I've ever heard. 12 straight overtimes at .2% chance. All I hear is the Florida state has a hard time beating people in 40 minutes. That's a whole I hear from this. You mentioned Kim Palmer all our friend. You remember when Ken king got a little bothered last season? He didn't feel like people were properly crediting him enough on television. We could not do it more on this podcast if we tried. How about this? I do it so much on television. So I just assume he wasn't talking about me. It's the other scoundrels. I do it so much that my colleagues now make fun of me live on air. Pete gillan is I love being a little be on air and he'll be like, I don't know what the numbers are. You're gonna have to talk to Gary and his friend Kim palm. He's like, oh, Gary and Kim Pong. Like we're dating. We're Kim Kardashian and Ken Thomas Ken palm is on the ion college basketball podcast more than leave it to be wrong. So let the record show, I credit Ken pom so much that the other people make I always assume they make fun of me behind my back. Now they've reached the point they do it right to my face on TV. Most of you got the trivia time wrong. Not so easy, is it? Florida state at Purdue. Tuesday night. ACC Big Ten challenge. Those are the games to know Monday and Tuesday. We will be back with you Wednesday morning. We knew we'd go long. But we went longer than I said. Well, think about it. We spent 5 minutes on premarital sex. All right? It's been another three minutes on my kid bashing holes in the wall. The bet else, it's been about 5 minutes on me just complaining about people who reach out to me via the Internet. You take all that out we're under an hour. It's my fault. Nada, I said you were saying hello. So as we wrap the pod before GP does the shouts, you've been producing us for almost a month here. This is kanata Edwards, not for short. He's the one responsible for this live stream that you're looking at. And the podcast you're listening to. So you want to say hello, buddy, after I don't know 12 or 14 episodes hiding in the shadows? I was enjoying hiding in the shadows, and now you drop me out, mat. For what? People I already have people saying that I wasn't real up until this point. And I know you saw that comment, which makes it even funnier because yes, I am real Blake. Thank you. You're welcome. I was just confirmed that he is real. Hey, hey, everyone. Hey, while you're here, why don't you zoom in on your own face? No, people really don't want to see that. Well, you know what? You're almost caught up with him to see his total Mike time of the past 5 seasons. You have now contributed to this podcast more than say embassy. I love samples. I'm missing. Indeed, other side of.

Chicago Mayor Lightfoot Posts Maskless Photo at WNBA Game, Violating Indoor Mask Mandates

"You think Lori Lightfoot cares that there's any pushback over her? Celebrating a WNBA, basketball teams win in the middle of a crowd indoors without her mask on. You think she cares? She just wants the police officers in Chicago fired. She wants to fire the cops. For not following the vaccine mandate. But she doesn't have to follow the mask mandate that she imposed. She's Lori Lightfoot. Biden doesn't need to follow the mask mandate that he imposed. He's Joe Biden. That's the point they know. You think Joe Biden doesn't know he's gonna get photographed? He's the president of the United States. You think somebody's gonna take his picture? Is he's walking through a restaurant? Well, of course they are. He doesn't care. Heck, Lori Lightfoot's picture. The one that she's sitting there grinning ear to ear in the crowd full of masked up people, you know why the people in the stands are mashed up 'cause they have to, 'cause that is the rules. But those rules don't apply to her. She's Lori Lightfoot. She's the mayor. His rules for thee not me. And they know it. She posted the picture. She doesn't care? But fire those police officers fire that Washington state football coach, fire that ESPN reporter fire that nurse fired that state trooper fire people who don't follow the Democrat rules.

'Woke' Media Fails to Ask NBA Coach About China

"Com. Josh cross how are you and NBA fan? Somewhat. I mean, I kind of lost interest in the NBA when wizards don't make the playoffs at all. But yeah, I follow the NBA. I like basketball. Say you know, Popovich is allegedly this brilliant guy. He's very good basketball coach, but yesterday, Gruden gets fired from misogynistic homophobic emails and Popovich compares Columbus to Hitler and doesn't get asked a question about the genocide in China and the Uyghurs in his complicity in that. What's wrong with the NBA sports media? Well, not just the sports media, it's the leadership of the NBA, which I think they've suffered the most of all the four sports leagues because they got the most political, all the leaks of some extent have gotten more political than they once were, but the NBA really just like, I remember during the bubble season they put Black Lives Matter on the court. They let players offer their political takes on things left and right. And that's not a great place to be. We want one of the top roles of building a good team and effective team is that you're not divided by politics. You're one team and you don't talk about these issues that have nothing to do with the MBA. Popovich has a long history of offering his political takes. This becomes a no surprise to me that he says something like that. Well, I don't mind is giving his hot political takes, but if he's gonna give it take on Hitler, genocide, slavery in Columbus, somebody ought to ask him about the Uighurs and the ongoing genocide in China from which he profits yes and so much of sorry, someone should ask the silver and someone should ask a lot of the players who play in China, you know, what they think about that. Not so much more relevant, timely issue for the NBA, at least, but you're right, that there's sort of a double standard and you don't get the type of scrutiny. You're going to open everything up to politics. You might as well should be talking about issues that directly affect the NBA and the bottom line. And if you're going to hijack if you're going to hijack a basketball press conference to rant about Hitler in Columbus, you're going to get asked to China question if you have a real

Is that the college game has always been more not perfect but about the game about comradery about the unique experience that young men get. That can't be touched. No matter what they can go and make millions of dollars. They can go and they can win an nba championship. They can go klay and reach their individual dreams which is amazing and rights to go after but to a person i experienced myself in many met a lot more success in the nba. The time i spent in college whether it was low major. Not even i go back terry porter. Who played for. My dad played seventy years when being finals in on non say you can't touch that the crowds the camaraderie. The the ups announced the stories. "The mason minute. With Kevin mason. We're living in a time when everybody wants to go back to the past. Go back to the way it used to be, but there is no turning back. And when I say used to be, we're talking the good old days, whatever that may be in your life. But I realized something just the other night. I don't want to go backwards. Some of my first memories, listening to basketball broadcast, listening to football broadcasts on a little a.m. radio, usually hearing my father do the call, and every now and again, let me go along with him. And I'm talking going back to the age of three, four years old, technology then, way behind what it is now, but it was still amazing to be able to do those things and I learned how to make those broadcast happen when you go from state to state. Anymore, you can do it with a cell phone, and amazingly, with the Internet, I could listen to my nephew, play football, thanks to some fancy technology. And I can't even imagine back in the 1960s, how that would have even been possible in my lifetime. What we're able to do and accomplish right now in this world is amazing. And what we can do in the future could be even more amazing. Simple little technology has made this world so beautiful. And at the same time, so scary for some.

What Makes a Rookie of the Year?

"I did some research looking into what really makes a rookie of the year and really three things really came stood out to me. One is opportunity right. You have to actually have minutes significant minutes in a significant role on your team. And if you look over the last couple of years for the rookie of the year race you're going to see that at twenty seven minutes a game seems to be the the threshold that we're looking at for players right now. Two thousand nineteen. It was twenty seven. Point eight doesn't eighteen was thirty minutes a game. And so the first thing that we're we're scouring is is this player going to get significant like starter minutes and a great role on their teams very difficult to crack rookie of the year. No matter how talented you are without those minutes the second key metric is really points per game so in two thousand eighteen. The top three scored. I think sixteen point three points per game two dozen nineteen top three vote-getters for rookie of the year had fifteen point. Three points a game. Twenty twenty was only thirteen points. A game But that was in part because thirty points a game was the third highest gray mark for any rookie about season. And so if you look at the past eight years the winner is was in the top three and usually the top two and scorn for rookies of the year. So not only. Is it going to be minutes but the opportunity to actually score the basketball and does the player have the ability to be a big time scored sort of the next thing that we're gonna look at at it also found that If you go back and sort of look at some of the work that kevin pelton is done at espn Fr- almost every season. The combined averages of points rebounds assists per game when you add those averages together. That's the player that's going to win the ward and then finally You know look when you're looking at rookie of the year. You're not actually talking about the player. That's gonna be the best player in five years if you go back and look at past winters. That's often just not the case. It's it's the player that's can have the most opportunity. I'm to really hit those metrics of scoring Minutes per game and then the sort of combined stats together. That's going to win work the year. And so that's going to change to me. The draft order a little bit about who we're going to handicap again for rookie of the

"Basketball podcast. If you missed the last segment we talked about. Us a basketball. All the drama going on with them with some guys leaving due to kobe exhibition losses. You know they did get one win. But there's been a lot of drama going on with usa basketball so if you guys wanna hear my thoughts on that please go ahead and do so however now or and be talking about some nba rumors. Whether it's damian lillard. Asking for a trade. Ben simmons trade talks going on you got some some guys in cleveland. Possibly leaving so We're gonna talk about all that in this segment and Yet man there's there's a lot going on even though you know we're still not in that Free agency mold. Were not in the off season yet. We still got the nba finals. Going on it's never just quiet. There's never anything quite going on in the nba. There's always going to be some kinda talk whether it's fake rumors or whatnot. In one of the big ones going on right now is damian. Lillard possibly asking for a trade request from the portland trailblazers and you know that at some point something like this was going to come out but like i just never would have imagined it to be now like i would have expected it to be sometime during the season if portland just never got right and they looked like you know. They're the same old team a bin for his latter. His last nine seasons with the with the franchise. And i was right damian. Lillard i mean even when i when i first saw it i was really surprised. I i you know i didn't. I was a little sceptical. I was like okay. Maybe this is a little fake especially when merkich came out and was tweeting. Like you're actually going to believe this guy come on and he's laughing and you know how close merkich and aiming low lavar. They've been there for the last couple seasons together and they've got built a very very good relationship and it ended up. Being true mean damian lillard was not asking for a trade. You know even did an interview recently After a usa basketball training you know practice talking about how you know. It's not coming from my mouth. I don't know what these people are talking about. Saying that i'm asking for trade And even some guys were. Were suggesting that he's going to be preferring new york as a destination and of course that's a lot of this new york media trying to hype up their franchise trying to make them seem like. Oh yeah they just made a fourteen. Maybe get knocked out in the first round. But they're in line to pick up one of the biggest superstars in the nba. That is the way as in this. Nba media. You gotta get a story wherever you possibly can even if you have to make it up out of thin air. That's just the way it is however this was shut down very quickly. it didn't even take day before damian. Lillard came out and talk about how these rumors were fake. He's not thinking about leaving. Expects himself in a portland trailblazers uniform at the start of this next season which i was expecting as well you know. If he really wanted out he would have said it as soon as they were eliminated. And would have said yeah. I don't know if this is gonna work out. Whatever the case he would have done it in a nice. You know small way. But he wouldn't he wouldn't just blatantly been like yeah nutri. That's not the kind of guy de mueller is. But since he didn't do that. I figured he would probably be on the roster leading into this next season and then of course depending on how this season goes then. He will decide whether he can't be here anymore and wants to trade. Or if he's gonna work out the rest of his contract and become an li once he becomes a free agent so daming lillard is not leading but he does have things to say about this portland trailblazers. He talked about how great the city is. How great the fans are you. Know how this franchise has built a very solid culture in in terms of winning. They've done nothing but win over these years that he's been there he's literally been there nine seasons and i think they made the playoffs every single season. If i'm if i'm not mistaken i feel like he's made the playoffs every single season. They made it to the western conference finals. I know they got swept by the golden state warriors. But still they. They are a solid team but of course it gets point like you said word. That's not enough. You know you you need to show and prove that the goal here is to win a championship. That's what he wants. He wants to win a championship and more than anything else. He wants to win a championship with portland. That's that's the thing. He wants to win a championship with the portland. Trailblazers usually wants to get them their first ever title. And i completely understand. He's a loyal guy he wants to be there. He loves that that city. It's become his home and he doesn't wanna leave them however he is willing to make a tough decision if it looks like. They're not heading in that direction. And that's what he said. There needs to be some urgency and one hundred percent agree with him. There needs to be urgency. He need they need to show him that. They're willing to make tough decisions. And and make big moves to get him guys that he needs in order to compete for a title and whether that means separating him in mccullum because it kind of feels like you know that duo has plateaued after exit to the denver. Nuggets without joel murray. And it's you know could cause if they go into the season with this exact same teen what in in what world you feel like their title contenders you know. They got an amazing player. Damian lillard they got some solid pieces in mccullum. Newark robert covington. You know cardinal anthony derek jones junior you can go on and on they got some solid pieces you know. But they're not they don't have a number. Two mccullum isn't a number two. He's made a solid number three. You know maybe he can fill that number two role at at some points but he's not a legitimate number two especially when you're number one place pretty much the same exact role just better than him. And that's what makes it tough to guards to offensive minded guards that don't give you much on the defensive end. And that's not really going to work. It's a kind of the same thing as what's going on with the philadelphia seventy sixers and i know that joel. Embiid and simmons are different types of players. But they're in a way like they both play in the same area of the floor. They both like to play inside which clogs up that paint so to have to build the team around both of those guys. It's tough you either have to take joel and beat out of the paint. Which is what he doesn't wanna do You have to surround them with three elite three point shooters which is not the easiest thing to do like this past season. they got tobias harris. Who is a solid number three. But he's not a knock down three point shooter he. He's a three level score kind of do it in all areas of the game offensively. But he's not a guy that you can just put on the three point line and expected knockdown threes. you know. Obviously seth curry is that danny. Green was that but isn't anymore so it's tough but it's the same situation goes on there. Which kind of leads me to my next point in this segment. Which is ben simmons. Trade talks and you know maybe portland and philadelphia can come to come to an agreement and sand simmons to portland and then mccullum comes to philly. That's been one train. That's been talked about but of course in that sense. You know you gotta think portland's getting the the best of the straight like mccollum is thirty years old. He's already the player that he's going to. Betty has been for the past couple seasons. He's not gonna get any better you know. But he's i don't think he's going to get any worse because that thirty years old..

"Welcome back to the gmc basketball podcast. If you missed the last segment we did a recap of games three and four of the nba finals. Also a bit of a prediction for the rest of the series. If you guys want to go check that out please go ahead and do so. But now we're gonna be talking about the usa basketball crisis going on right now. There's a lot of drama happening with the usa basketball team. Whether it's cova protocols losing exhibition matches Player still not with the roster. Whatever the case may be. There is something going on with usa basketball. And we're gonna get into all of that but man it's it's just it's been a tough week man whether it was the two exhibition losses to nigeria and What was the other team that they lost two. They lost to australia. They did win against argentina in and they you know beat them handedly. What was it one way to eighty but man it was. It was a tough first two games for the usa. And like we can. I go to that that usa nigeria game where they lost ninety two eighty seven and it just felt like that. There was no competitiveness on the defensive side. Nigeria made twenty three pointers. And you gotta give credit to that. Nigeria side led by a few mba talents. In joshua kogi russia. Chew paula gave. Vincent also know that as nnamdi you know. They all had some very solid gain whether paula playing solid. Defense on one side of okogie giving his pressure on the defensive end as well and giving some you some minutes on the on the offensive. End this well. Of course you had e. k. nwama. Who was absolutely killing at thirteen points. Seven rebounds to assist. But then game vincent man six for eight from the three point line twenty one points representing that miami heat team and we can't forget that a true of block on katie. When he was driving in it was just a very impressive stuff. But when you get your best to players on the usa side. Going eight for twenty. Three combined between damian lillard and kevin durant it. That's just not gonna cut it. You need to be more efficient on that end and what i saw more on that in. That game was a lot of ice. Oh play a lot of these guys is trying to beat their main off. the dribble. sure they'll take a pick from whether it was bam on a bio or dream on green. They would take the picks but then it was just you know they were just trying to beat those guys on their own at like look out of the twas at twenty six total field goals made the only had what how many assists that nineteen assists. I mean i guess that's not too bad but still to it. Just it just felt like you know a lot of ice. Oh ball a lot of you told them just trying to beat their individual matchup which is just. It's not gonna work you know. Oh and and also like someone. I got a mention on the nigeria side. Caleb agata that guy was in his bag all night. What seven for ten three for three from the fruit from the three point line for seventeen points. What three rebounds two assists that. That man was absolutely killing it off the bench for nigeria but it was just a very very poor performance from usa like they were in the lead for a good amount of the game especially in the in the first half. They were relieving by two points at the half. But then the second half they couldn't really muster anything together and when you think of all the us aid teams that we've seen in the past. I know this team. You know it's a lot of young players kind of put together. No you got. The experience of durant has been in an olympic team. But like a lot of these other guys don't have any experience in the olympics in international play. So you know. They're not used to the way that these games are called the the the different rules. you know. you see a lot of the time when you know they're used to getting these touch vows in the nba. That's that's that's one of the glaring things that you've seen from the team which is like you know they're expecting these calls but that's not gonna happen in international play. You know you're you're not gonna get those touch vows so you see guys like tatum bill. who else i got out. I think lillard also just like they get hate and they're expecting to get a call on for them and they're not so they're kind of like looking at the rafts wondering what's going on and then nigeria's just taking. They're not an expecting anything from this game. You know they wanna come out play his heart as they possibly can and get a chance to beat. You know what's considered the best team in the world. And they did just that so you gotta give nigeria a whole bunch of credit. They absolutely deserve it. You know sticking to their game plan making threes and it was from like pretty much everybody even though gave vinson had six of those twenty you had three from nwama one from a three from E k oro orbu say that name another one two more from metu to from only three from a gotta like you got three point shots from like what was that seven different players on the roster that that that's impressive stuff it was. It was being spread out everywhere. They weren't the only ones that took shots. You know casey politika few joshua kogi as well make them but they at least kept the defense honest and overall it was a very very impressive showing from that nigeria that young nigeria squad and For for usa mandate. They need to get it together because that was that was a very poor showing. And then you know you get them going up against australia. Who's who's considered a better team than nigeria. I think by jury of ranked like somewhere in the twenty s like like a high twenty no low twenties in ranking and feeble. But then you got australia..

"All that guy gets focused around the individual. And i use the term individualism basketball versus collectivism basketball when i described usa versus international teams. And what do i mean by that. Well the united states for example is very good basketball. Obviously look at all these. Au prospects look at the great players that play in our mba right college players young guys who are just coming up in ascending high school. Right you name it. We've had a lot of talented players and still do the lighthouse placing nited states and those guys are gonna go on to play in college or nba or in the nba. Doing well right. And the reason being is because their style play fits well the united states. The i'd that united states basketball is made. And what exactly is that for people that are trying to understand what i'm trying to talk about here. Well the united states basketball is pretty simple for made it to explain. It's basically individualistic basketball. 'isolation you do yourself fast paced right running the wings i score ever. I want you know high picket role in the nicer. But there's not much at this as much. Unlike field cut off the basketball right being able to play without the basketball on your hands and everyone falls victim that you want to have the ball in your hands. You want to score. You wanna look good in one you want to have the highlights but there is a reason why the international are catching up to the united states. More and i'm overreacting here.

"Break up hits Because let's be frank here the other. There's a wide is where people get frustrated with nba basketball. Because they think that's like westwood team. Game more star game will will. The olympics is definitely more a team game. The s you start out to win but you can have. Maybe you know lesser talent is still be able to win. If your team is a great defensive scheme i forget who it was but i think brazil or somewhat some country and there's defensive scheme against yacht. I remember when he played for. Greece was fantastic right. These coaches are have professional guys through the point of the euro league or spanish. Wieger wherever right at these guys are good players and they also gonna have. Nba stars team. Luca danni right. Serbia probably can have yokich. I mean again right in. Spain's always really good. So you know the usa cages. Go and they're just gonna blow every team out. They could do that right. They had to talk to her out to do that. But it's not easy as easy as people think right just being able to go in walk in and show when the olympics is not always easy we see that with the bucks in game. Four against the atlanta hawks right. They thought they could show up the trae young and seem roll them then they got steamroll themselves so you have to. You have to build a system to build a culture you gotta build a identity. Give these guys to play correctly together because what they have a lot..

I think that you know people who are in certain positions is almost very similar to what i do like. I've been blessed to be able to have. These people know helped me in the same fashion that i've created big apple basketball to help others. It's incredible right. How all comes full circle where you're helping you. You've kind of given so much now. It's all coming full circle and you built that huge networking basketball on your link to right. Which is how. I got in touch From from before. I noticed that the word consultants on their thirteen times when i to commend at the consultants on their live. It's obsolete because you have this moment where people right at the maybe the bridge between whether it's big out basketball so many other things or and so many other things i mean. What is that rose a consultant in the basketball world. We mean exactly what you just said and again you know one of the things that i enjoy about my role with big apple basketball is that we and myself or just a basketball resource any and everything so when people say to me you know what do you do you know. What do you do nine to five. When you're not doing your events and you're not doing training at the best way to describe it would almost be like i'm a basketball three one one operator where the three one one operated. "Travel around in play different colleges and then we get paid to play so the colleges would pay. These explorers would pay us as far as players in a. I did that one year and ninety eight and then began to think like man like you know i can do this. So in ninety nine. I created big apple basketball. And what big apple basketball i started out was was pro-tory team where it was myself in a lot of my friends who had played uconn and you know any atlantic ten and i had a couple of former nba players. I created a team of based upon my network of friends and we travel around in division one schools. In the way that i came up with the name big apple basketball was because i knew that we were going to be traveling and i wanted a name. That really Signified where we from we were from so i knew no matter where we travel. We said we're the name of program and then team is big. I will basketball. People automatically new no from new york city in what happened. Was that turned into me. Creating additional programs around big apple basketball so then it branched off. From just being a touring team to begin doing basketball training and workouts to helping players get overseas jobs so when i first started my my real training and everything i was doing big basketball in the beginning it was really essentially just for pro players and then what i began to do around two thousand three will start to build out programs for high school players and younger kids you know and then then the model. I just kind of took the same model that i was doing with the pro in overseas players in started doing with with young players. It's funny. I mentioned too early. But when i was eleven years old when i judge to basketball of course maybe it was with the locals. Cyo greek league teams but also they One of her colleagues recommended touring the city. And i was one of the first things i ever got to ask like. Okay well it could be limited. This basketball thing took a few more years after that. Really fall in love with as one of my first introduction to in it's crate Amazing how not just. Maybe i didn't even know that it was outside new york city. Right your your your travel with the team appealing. Oh big basketball. That's another way for people to be around the game time to appreciate that. That's really cool thinking about that. Also and you mentioned how it's kind of grown toward is now shut off as a travel team it's evolved into your doing all these clinics and things like that. I mean what. I thought was really cool. Maybe is the inclusion with things like the nba evolved with the g. league in the nba. And obviously you went engineer. Nba coach of the year. How has they a basketball. Maybe grown to being cooperated with so many other programs in can continue. Growing yemen has just been a true blessing. And you know. I'm a firm believer that when you do things with with the good motive and proper intention that opportunities will attract themselves to you. And i think it was good to go out and seek things but i think that people also notice good people in notice quality work so with each of those things with the junior. Nba coach of the year. You know never in my wildest dreams did you know. I begin to start coaching kids to think about getting an award or getting my own personal satisfaction. You know everything that i did was about trying to help. Players get exposure for college scholarships. I mean it was like literally that simple you know to try to create different programs and different events and tried to use my gift through the game black basketball to try to impart as much wisdom to people to really try to help catapult into lifelong dreams. You know so with that. You know the the the junior..

"Athletes time rather than that. I mean i definitely still come back. This and i feel in some cases i was and i really regret that but i don't want to be their last coach like i don't want to be their last coach now. A natural playing experience for a player especially the college level. It ends after college. But i certainly kind of went into it from a young age from a lot of hard nosed coaches saying you know what if you coach them so hard that somebody doesn't wanna do it anymore. You're actually doing a good job right and to me it's like okay. I get that because we wanna push challenge create competition. But can i still do that. And show more of that vulnerability to the athlete and more that full philosophical side. And i think john when you listen to me and you talk to me you see really deep philosophical side and it was really hard to balance that with being competitive. And that's another challenge for young coaches. Yeah you got to be competitive because he got a push. You got a challenge but at the same time can you be vulnerable. Can you be human and show them that humanity side which is again equally important It became easier for me when i had my daughters to be honest. 'cause my daughter's used to come to practice all the time and they just loved being around. The gym was nothing to do basketball. They just love being around the gym and it may be much more aware of fact that one. I was modeling paran. Like a lot of my players didn't have great parental situations. So i'm modeling. What it looks like to be a parent and it also helped me appreciate and understand that woo okay. So what are they seeing from me. That will influence them and different things. Dot counterstrike me has gone okay in a way. My daughter's became my best mentors because it was constantly this check and balance of going okay. They're here how would they wanna be coached. Or what would they wanna see from their dad in coaching other people. So sometimes those kind of unseen moments are the moments that kind of impact you the most about how much obviously you've done how much people emerged. Grown in the last few years is is staggering. Where you see yourself taking it maybe in the next few months in the next few years what. What's what's what's emotion while john you. You have an unfair advantage because you've been exposed a little bit too intern program..

"Maybe minds on good enough. You know when. I had that doubt. And i think we all go through that is coaches and as people and gratefully got beyond it and i said listen. Even if there's really good which it was. I was gonna make sure that mine was just as good but it was going to be unique in its own way and that's really what it's become basketball merge has been is still very much a knee sh-she in the coaching world and i'm grateful for that niche but you know it's not meant necessarily for mass market. It's not necessarily for everyone. But i hope someday it is in these last years it's evolved in so many different ways mostly with the podcast. That's one way you can show that an there's blog there's the youtube channel like can kind go to the progression of maybe like what he thought of. Oh maybe actually try this or maybe there's some other ones that we don't see anymore because they didn't work out but these are the ones the day what would kind of look like well you hit you hit it right on. I mean i've thrown a lot of stuff on the wall and a lot of stuff hasn't worked and it still doesn't work sometimes like i don't want people ever think that you know one i'll stop trying stuff or two that you're not gonna have failure because we all know that there's that works all the time so and especially online. I mean that's an even more important thing like you know as we speak twitter just came out with fleets which is basically instant stories for twitter. And then all of a sudden. You're like oh. I got to figure out a new thing you know if i want you know. Keep up or i want to try and find it or sometimes you decide you know what that's not going to add any more to the business can add any anything more coaches that. I'm not doing already so you kind of constantly go through that evaluative process about. Where am i going to focus my most my most important time. That's going to have the most impact for me. That was my coaching life. For seven years as a college coach. I never had a full time assistant. Everyone was a volunteer. There are tremendous people. But because of that i constantly had to make decisions about what was going to most impact my players in their development and our team in terms of winning and those were constant choices that i had to make about removing the fluff. And getting right to the stuff. That's most canadian. Pack those things. And i think that had a huge impact on of basketball merchants started as and then what did it. Evolve does and like i said didn't have the podcast right away. That wasn't something that was going to fit into my plans. It wasn't gonna. It was going to take away from the other part that was going to grow so it became something that i came more comfortable with later in the process. And you know really a thing. That's helped push. The brand is a hole to another level. So you know you can't start with everything but you can start with the things that you think are most important. It's interesting you brought up. Some of your college. Coaching stops before going into basketball. Emerging i mean obviously they talk you all the xs knows all the actual hard skills and a more than picking your interest because you kind of are the head coach basketball emergent that. What are those skills. Catalog.

"Business your family giving you that time to grow and nurture and learn alecky. That's a sacrifice that's being a team player. That's doing what's best. For the overall goal of business being to elevate an allocate time resources to practice make vacations to hold the go up there in the game and win when clients and business occur money cure revenue over and over again repeatedly over a span of time but many times especially this year in particular. Maybe they have more funds to be able to scale in different directions so they have more power in depth. This is the time where he needs to become a specialist. Not every person can be triple. Threat can get ten rebounds. Ten points ten steals in a game every single time sometime. The magic is there and you're hot other times you're not so what do you do. You focus in on what you do best. "Can say I don't even want to do something StreetWise. I want to work on my agility or my ball-handling and they'll be a video that will pop up almost like dog or t 90 x and you're going to be able go along with the trainer and learn that drill. And so again, it's a great teaching tool for players to get that live almost live interaction right there on the spot while also holding themselves accountable which is huge and something that I personally teach in obviously doctored issue as well. But we want to hold players accountable every single time they step into the gym and and I may not like to hear that but that's how you're going to have success over time is getting the different roles whether that's makes or takes it could be a street drill shooting and making five in a row before moving to the next station all these things add a little bit more pressure to the player it also messes with their mind a little bit and puts little bit more pressure on them. So the CT machine along with our other ones possess all those abilities wage. The CTS just taking it to the next level where you can train in a variety of ways and you know, it's an incredible machine. I really wish had something like that. That's great. And it's obviously must be useful to keep guys accountable and that's super important especially during a time like now where you know, can't really be on top of your players. Like I I assume cause of them all the time but it's not the same for me to be on top of them and and and the CT allows you to do that. So that's awesome and like you're saying how you're able to track shots whether you're a coach or parent or even if your tracking yourself as a player, how does that in terms of tracking players directly correlate two player and team Success With It hundred ten percent. I mean can give you an example for myself. I thought that I was always a better shooter than I actually was until I got to a professional level and I really started to track the amount of shots. I was taking in making a practice and I realized that needed to put in more word, you know, obviously when you get in the gym and your coaches are watching and you're shooting shots and people aren't really keeping track of the numbers, you know, if your streak a few in row here, it looks great. If you miss a few in a row, it goes in one ear and out the other year and you don't really think about it. But what you can do with tracking Statistics over time is you can start to see where your success rate is on the basketball court and what I do with my players because we should from all over the place and different situations and we look at the numbers and it'll show all the time where our strengths and weaknesses after we do it multiple times and I had I think that they're incredible shooting from the corner and realized that that's their weakest spot. I had players that say, hey my favorite shots a table key and don't realize that you know, maybe the wings they're a little bit better and so it's Thursday. To help players understand where their strengths and their weaknesses are depending on the situation. It also helps coaches out as well. I don't want to be drunk find a play for a little Johnny or wage a little bit for 1/4 shot if he or she can never hit that and I may have.

I'm really excited to be here as well basketball's web-based. So anytime I have an opportunity to talk about it. I'm going to run with that for sure. Awesome. So just to start off you kind of walk us through your playing career. Yeah, definitely so born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota here went to high school ended up going in playing Division 1 basketball out of Northern Colorado in the Big Sky. So fun fact about the Big Sky Conference. That's where Damian Lillard played. He's killing it right now in the play-offs last game. So not really but he's been on fire and he played at Weber State which is the same conference. That's kind of the claim to fame. So play there for a couple of years and then transferred over the Minnesota state-mankato where I finished my last two years. I've really really really good successful two years of my teammates and my coaches there. We want a lot of games and went to the final four division too. So it was all American their 1010 a different Awards because of the success that we had and that led me to the opportunity to play professional basketball also played for about five years after that making stops in Germany wage. For turkey and Romania played in the Middle East for a little bit all over all over also played in the NBA D-League gets the G League now, but when I played was the D-League for the Dallas Mavericks had a chance of bounced around and play all over the place and you know, maximize my skill set as far as I could and you know after that transition to dr. Just basketball. That's awesome. And I have one of those things you've done is play and all over the world. What was that kind of life? Whether it's a story about like the first shot you had of.

"So definitely, there's a whole library on youtube channel full of videos and obviously all this stuff you just to the top of your head there's more tips on how to properly utilized bio mechanics ought to the extent. So that was that was absolutely great and I'm GonNa make sure all my all. My freshman listed because I some some of them they were like Johnny Utah Bogus and all this stuff I'm like, no, it's serious. It's important. You really have taken seriously because it really will completely change your career whether you listen to. What were you don't so that that was great on bio mechanics just to wrap things up account astronauts and things in the bubble so both your wizards and heater. In the bubble, your wizards aren't doing great but the heat look dangerous. Yes. So the heat I've definitely kind of picked up a liking for them. You know the past couple of years wizards up on enough of his funny story gives when I first started watching basketball really getting into the pro basketball at least it was Gilbert Arenas Anton Jones crump other like gives that team. So I, was. I was definitely a fan named, but that was pretty young and after that tailed off and they were awful for you season. So at that point, I became more like a player guy. So I like Chris Paul for a while as my favorite player Katie because he's from the DC area. an like a I mentioned earlier in the show Steph was probably the biggest influence. Those three guys really kinda dominated by watching career. Early earlier in my life, but now I just watched Without any judgments at all because I'm tired, of having to deal with. It seemed like the wizards but I definitely keep keep tabs on an like like I. Think they have a bright future especially when John Wall Comes Day one of my favorite players for sure bread veal obviously. A lot of these guys are. Really setting up for the future and it's GonNa. "Who aren't as good athletes now you're saying. Those those athletes are getting the same level of skill. So in continuing data more more, you see guys like you know. They're grows Cameron League. No one had ever been that athletic skilled in the history of the game basketball and I think that's having even more more like grassroots level even on like you mentioned high school those those Gaza would typically be just athletes like they will just walk in gym class and throwdown windmill one, they're getting better training. So now streaming edition coaches men even even basketball coaches are becoming more associated with outta making athletes better and two. They have better skills, coaches more Gaza playing basketball more Gaza watching players like Steph curry southern more in to be that type of player in AD in those skills. To their game than just being satisfied with being athlete. So when that scale that athleticism the to kind of. What used to be ends of the spectrum now become one big thing. That's often just GonNa continue going in that direction who knows everyone NBA maybe Paul George thirty years where it's just like a complete skill athleticism. As scary to think about but also super excited to think about just. How much the Games again and We're GONNA really get to experience a lot of interest over the next twenty, thirty forty years and even pass that begins evolve and keep on evolving and I can't wait to spill that ride. Since you. Since you brought up dare grows as a big thing about you is landing mechanics and that's also a huge issue at their grows and guys like that so i. if you could give us a little bit of background on kind of your thoughts, Atlanta mechanics but also kind of who players today because a lot of my freshman will be watching this should emulate and also who should stay away from and say you know what? This is what that brisket to be doing better because when you see both sides kind of in your head, be like, okay this is what I should be doing this when I should have been doing and that's kind of how you get the best result. Possible. There's good questions Thing. Kind of preferences by saying like basketball is a game of imperfection. So every level from. If you lose the ball, sometimes, those are the best times to score because you lose a ball everyone's scrambling around next thing you know you find your way bucket same thing goes for. Landing.
