"Is greatness. He's amazing. The win also tied Djokovic with Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam victories by men's singles player ever. They've each won 22. And the win will also make Djokovic. The number one ranked player in the world yet again that's the 7th time he's held the top spot in his career. And it doesn't look like he's going to be slowing down anytime soon, Sarah. Here's Djokovic talking about pursuing Serena Williams, who has 23 grand slams and Margaret court, who has 24. I really don't want to stop here. I don't have intention to stop here. I know that when I'm feeling good, physically mentally present, that I have a chance to win any slam against anybody. So I like my chances going forward. All right, the next Grand Slam is the French Open where Nadal has won a record 14 times, so Sarah, we could be looking at a really fun showdown there. I'm already feeling very impatient about waiting for that one. All right, meanwhile, on the women's side of the Australian open, we got a first time Grand Slam champion, arena sabela, of Belarus, came back from one set down to defeat defending Wimbledon champ Elena ribena for 6, 6 three 6 four. For much of her career Saba link is served has been kind of a weakness for her, but she's reportedly worked with a biomechanics specialist to rework her motion and toss, and that overhaul has served her pretty well. After the match, she also talked about how she's gotten more confident. I start to understand that actually I'm here because I work so hard and I'm actually a good player. And every time I had a tough moment on court, I was just reminding myself that I'm good enough to handle all these everything, you know? She's an Aussie open champion now, Sarah, and by the way, they call her the marvel for Minsk. I mean, a marvelous, truly a marvelous nickname there. And we have to note, John. That she was enjoying a glass of white wine. Mid press conference. Yeah. So she wasted no time celebrating her big moment. Yeah, and like you just said, why not? Enjoy your moment, girl. All right, let's wrap things up with some baseball and Saturday night the Cy Young awards are handed out at the baseball writers association of America dinner with Justin Verlander previously with the Astros now with the mets, accepting in the AL, and the Miami Marlins sandy Alcantara accepting in the NL, but there was a bit of a snafu with the award Sarah. Yeah, I mean, you can't spell MLB without LOL, right? Technically not right, but you get the gist. Now before we get to this mishap, here is the 39 year old Verlander talking about the award, while simultaneously working on his stand up comedy routine. Personally, I'm so thrilled to be here tonight. As you can imagine, a lot goes into being an older athlete. It takes a village. Especially when you're almost 30. I knew that when Kate see, I told you I wouldn't land. She laughed at every time for some reason. She's a good wife. Oh, wow. Good for you, Kate. That joke kind of flopped, but somehow it wasn't the most embarrassing part of the night, John. This is actually the best part right here. The awards given to Berliner and Alcantara for being the most valuable pictures in their leagues, misspelled the word valuable John. No. Yeah, they forgot the second a oh my God. Huh? Ten out of ten. Great work MLB. No notes. Remember when commissioner rob Manfred said that the World Series trophy was just a piece of metal. Oh, I do. Yeah, I guess he wasn't kidding. All right, well that's it for us today from wondery. I'm John Gonzalez. And I'm Sarah kazel with two ace. Thanks for listening. Nice. Hey, prime members. "Sports at 15 and 45 powered by maximus. Moving people and technology forward. At ten 45, Dave Johnson. We've been talking so bad track and field this morning, specifically track this morning as the world track and field championships wrapping up in Oregon last night. The United States a record 33 medals at this event including Noel lyles from Alexandria, Virginia. You know, he set the American record in the 200 meters one tenth of a second faster than the American record set by Michael Johnson at the 1996 Olympics. So that makes him a faster than the 200 meter meters just about faster than anyone, except for guy's name. Usain Bolt at Johann Blake, both Jamaica. So he's in pretty good company there. And again, just a tremendous meat for the Americans. The nationals, after avoiding those three game sweep against the Diamondbacks, started a series titled against the Dodgers. It'll be the Orioles and rays. Now yesterday, have a David big puppy Ortiz going into the baseball Hall of Fame. Over the weekend, we celebrated our own. Yes, he has been as Tim kerch and we claim him from Walter Johnson high school, the baseball writers association of America, career excellence award, and he noted that the largest disparity in size between a player and writer honored in the same year kirchen is 5 5 and Ortiz is 6 three. It might be right, but I think he was just kind of joking and having some fun. Yes, we've got baseball in our areas that I place playoff baseball. The collegiate summer baseball, the Bethesda big train, they play a truly povich park out there in Bethesda, they're going to take on the Gaithersburg giants tonight. Dave Johnson, WTO sports

"That stir last year. But he is lovable in a lot of respects and he does these things on the field that make you think he is a happy go lucky fun guy. And it seems like a lot of his teammates have very nice things to say about him. But presumably not opponents he is punched in. Yeah. Yeah, and it's tricky. I think that we can maybe and we don't know that this was what was at play. I think you can understand the context that might lead someone to behavior like this without excusing it, but it is important to sort of understanding it. And I don't know if you've been DFA, maybe that, you know, shakes you and puts you on your back foot from a mood perspective. But yeah, he can't you can't bunch someone without don't punch people, first of all, we can stop at that. We don't really need to qualify, but if you're going to engage in punching in the baseball context switch, you know, some baseball players seem really motivated to do despite us thinking that it was that it's not the best way to resolve conflict. It's generally best for people to have a sense that you're coming because you can really hurt someone that way. It's good that that doesn't seem to have happened here, but don't cold cock someone, that's bad. All right, so let's get to today's topic. The Hall of Fame ballot was released today Monday and I need some help here because any day now before the end of the month, I will be getting a Hall of Fame ballot in my mailbox for the first time ever. I got the email today, notifying me that my ballot was mailed or was going to be mailed today. I am eligible for the first time. I've been a member of the baseball writers association for ten years now. So my privilege as part of that is that if I want to, I can vote on the Hall of Fame. And my inner 12 year old is pretty pumped about this. Yeah. My outer 34 year old is sort of hoping the ballot gets less in the mail somehow. So I genuinely do not know what to do. And I don't mean that I'm like kind of conflicted, but really I've made up my mind already and I just want someone to endorse my decision. I really have not made a decision and I could use some advice from you from the listeners from anyone who wants to weigh in here. And we talked a little bit about the issues with Hall of Fame voting these days last year, and episode 1640, we had a couple of philosophy professors on to talk to us about the ethics of Hall of Fame voting, but this is really real to me now. And I guess it's a year closer to being real for you. And I'm pretty conflicted here. I don't want to sound super self serious and act as if this is the weightiest moral decision anyone has ever wrestled with because I think baseball writers can be a bit precious about this at times. Not naming any names. But in the grand scheme of things, the Hall of Fame ballot doesn't matter that much. But this is a baseball podcast, so most of what we talk about doesn't matter that much. So I basically picked the worst possible time to enter the voting body. I mean, my timing is the opposite of impeccable here. It's like the Donald Glover in community meme where he walks into the room with the pizza and he's smiling and then the room is on fire. That is me work again with my first ever Hall of Fame ballot in the final year of eligibility for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, semi Sosa and Kurt Schilling. The first year of eligibility for Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz. And of course, you have the lockout potentially contributing to a dearth of other baseball news. So December might just be like Hall of Fame all the time. That will not be the most pleasant discourse. I don't think. So this is basically like I'm the contestant on who wants to be a millionaire who's torn between two answers. And so I'm using a couple of lifelines today. I'm phoning a friend that you and I am asking the audience and I'm not going to necessarily abide by anyone else as a opinion about what I should do here, but I do value anyone else's opinion about what I should do here because this is not necessarily what I envisioned. Yeah. I thought about voting for the Hall of Fame to the extent that I ever thought I would. Like, once I was in the BBW a and I started looking ahead and said, oh, hey, you know, ten years down the road. I could potentially vote for the Hall of Fame. That's kind of cool and I can have a little impact on history here and I can join the rich tradition of baseball writers voting on the Hall of Fame and I care about baseball history. And in theory, it's sort of a fun activity to participate in. But a little less fun now and I know I'm not the only writer who shares that opinion. So basically it's like, you know, I always envisioned that this would be about picking who were the best baseball players. That's kind of always what I thought the Hall of Fame was not the museum portion, which is separate, of course, but the plaque part, the part where we decide is this guy Hall of Famer or not and he gets to have his plaque in the room. That to me was always about, well, were you one of the best baseball players ever, and it was basically only about that more or less. And now it is not only about that. And I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it is definitely different. And so when I was looking ahead to this, I was like, you know, I can be in on the next 11 or Tim raines or Larry walker. You know, I can support those candidates who maybe deserve or support than they get. And I can prevent or help prevent a future snub of an archaeon or a Bobby gricar and Alan Trammell or a Kenny Lofton someone like that. You know, I can cast my righteous vote for the saber metrically supported candidate. And now, well, I guess it would be fun to vote for Scott Roland. But beyond that, almost every legitimate candidate has some sort of controversy associated with them that makes it bigger than just baseball than just the stats. Yeah, just the numbers and just the jaws score. And so it's a different exercise and when that I feel more ambivalent about than they expected that I would. Well, perhaps we can start with a couple of sort of ideological questions that might help you to put some bumpers on this. Because I think that there are a couple of things that as a voter you need to answer for yourself and perhaps first and foremost, well, do you want to do the character stuff now? Or would you like to save it for a second question? Well, it all comes down to the character stuff, I suppose. I guess so. It depends what your other question is. I don't know. Let's start with a question that is relevant both to some returning candidates and also to some of the newcomers. So have you developed your opinion of where performance enhancing drugs factor into your ballot? Well, 'cause I think there are a couple of ways that you can go about this. I have always thought that Jay's approach, Jay jaffe's approach to this is sort of a reasonable one, right? Where he sort of bifurcates the group between those whose association with PEDs was part of what he dubs the wild west period right before there was a collectively bargained policy, the one that we know now that governs enforcement..

The sons are not certain exactly how long Paul will have to be away from the team. Again. It is a covid 19 situation He has been vaccinated is what they've said. So I'm interested to see how this one plays out and why he's really in the protocol. Stan Van Gundy out as the Pelicans coach after just one season at the helm, 31 41, a team led by All Star Zion Williamson, Scott Brooks won't be back at the Washington Wizards. Coach next season 1 87 and two Oh, seven during his 10 year. They're just one playoff victories since 2000 and 17. Oh, by the way, they allow the most points in the NBA last season and the second most points the previous three years, So I need a little help them and Louisville catcher Henry Davis named the second team All American team. I saw it had Henry Davis going as the number one pick to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and a lot can change in a month. We serve a month left to go before the draft. But again, the last mock that I saw he was the number one pick overall. That'd be great. Yeah, it would be very good. So alright that sports We've got a lot of other things going on today, Terry. I'm starting to his his some of his musical tastes are all your big flute guy. So you gotta appreciate what they bring to the table. Jack Corrigan joins us now. Good morning, Jack. How are you? Good morning, Dave. Hello, Mike. Hey, Jack. Good to talk to you. So just so General told that you have the poster in the bedroom. Sort of Jethro told thing. Um, e don't know if you know or not day One of my hobbies is oil painting, and I actually have A painting I did of the cover of Aqualung among various things. I wow through the years I did not know that. Yeah. So, Yeah, I'm a big tell fan. They played it. Cornell when I was an undergrad you You just can't get enough. Ian Anderson on the flute. There you go, You know Motive. Breath. Uh oh, yeah, the great one. I will say, Jackie, you are understating your your painting skills after after seeing those Rockies paintings you did last year. I am a not that I wasn't a true believer. But, man. Oh, man, You've got some talent there, my friend. Well, I appreciate it. Unfortunately, we've had way too much time on our hands to do you know, I'd like to be too busy, you know? Yeah, well, you're close. Theo having that star before we talk a little bit about the Rockies. Let me let me get your perspective on the Hall of Fame voting. Nobody voted in this year. Some interesting sort of back and forth with Curt Schilling and the Red Sox ownership. But what? What were your thoughts on nobody being voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this year? Well, I kind of thought that might happen, Dave, probably for a couple of reasons. One. I know there are some voters who I think wanted to keep the spotlight on Derek Jeter. Who's you know, I was elected in last year along with the Rockies, Larry Walker. And this year you're gonna have both classes be recognized that one ceremony, So maybe there was a little bit of that. Um, you can argue it zah discussed in that could go on for a long time about Are we just dealing with their abilities on the field and then shillings case? Not so much. You know what he Has done since then. I know Omar Vizquel, who was certainly qualified to be a Hall of Famer had his numbers go down a little bit because of Some domestic abuse allegations of leveled against him in the midst of the voting. You know, people have the right to vote. I had problems with the 14 blank ballots. And Mike certainly say this before Dave. My biggest complaint is who votes and how they vote. You know, quick example, The New York Post had 11 voters. In his 65 plus years of doing baseball. Vin Scully never had a vote. Who do you think knows more about the game of baseball? That's that's my number one gripe about the Hall of Fame voting most of time they get it right. But, man, there are people who are voting who have no business voting. So who decides that I did not know the Vin Scully didn't ever have a vote. But who decides? The baseball Writers Association who decides as to who actually gets a vote. And how do you How do you go about? I mean from do you have to die to not have your vote? Is that how it works? Well, I do know that you have to have at least 10 consecutive years. Um, with a baseball Writers Association of America Card, you know that you're an official member. So It has to be at least 10 consecutive years of covering Major league baseball for a start, for example, Patrick Saunders, um because he had a stretch with the Denver Post, where he was on the editor's desk. And not cover in the team. He doesn't yet have 10 consecutive years so he doesn't have a vote. But Somebody who's a columnist again. Just a reference for the post, you know, shows up a half dozen times at the Citi Field or Yankee Stadium. But has his carpet for the consecutive years necessary gets the vote and you know, nobody in Mike, I think David could appreciate this the most after really jumping in and doing it, even in a shortened season. Nobody watches a game or closely Then play by play broadcasters where you have to watch every single moment. People who have been around the game like Scully and all the guy, you know, Ted, look, just retired and sanding three years of covering covering the population. You think they know the game as well or better than anybody voting? I think so. Yeah, I would agree with you, Jack. I mean, you think it's some of the grimy look, look at the years the decades you put in John Rooney. I mean, you can go up and down the list of of long, long time. Excellent. Broadcasters, Weatherby radio or TV, and somehow the voice isn't there isn't isn't to be heard when it comes to Hall of Fame and put Yeah, you know, to the writer's credit. Most of the time they get it right. I thought they got it right this year. Um, I think Todd Helton's numbers would be Even better in terms of his eventual induction if the votes still weren't centered so much in the Eastern time zone, I think there are a lot of people who never saw Todd play in person, or just once in a while. And there are only four first baseman since 1900 who have better numbers than Todd in in many categories, and they're all in the Hall of Fame. So You know, that's that's a pretty easy choice. And yet there he is right around 50%. It'll probably take him two or three more years before he gets in hope he does, And I think that could happen. Let me ask you about one guy that was up this year. Curt Schilling, who was a hell of a picture, I think prior to the actual vote. Hey, was that about 70%? You need to be at 75% in your mind is Curt Schilling. Gather should be in the Hall of Fame. You know, I for me if I was a voter, um I That would be a long one to decide. There's no question he's one of the great postseason. Playoff pitchers in the history of the game. He had some years in his career where he was good, but maybe not great. I probably would have voted for him, but he would have been one that I would have thought about it a little longer. Would've voted for Scott rolling for sure this scale for sure who I saw, Um, I would probably vote for Gary Sheffield. I think Andrew Jones deserves more consideration. So it's not an easy task. There's no question to that. I mean, the football guys go through the same thing. I mean, come on. How long does John Lynch after wait to get in? You know, that's it's not easy to make those choices. When only so money get in. That's why it's called a Hall of fame..

Pat Fitzgerald is gonna be around at Northwestern for quite some time he has signed a 10 year extension. That to be a cat go cats. The terms are not disclosed. At least not yet. He is 106 and 81 through 15 seasons at school. It's going to tie him to North question until 2030, although I think we all knew that Pat Fitzgerald was going to be a northwestern wildcat. For life. This makes it, I guess kind of official, although apparently Fitzgerald has been mentioned or had been mentioned and had been thought of pretty highly by number of NFL organizations for their head coaching openings. Even this offseason, right? I don't have those bears right? Don't forget. Pat Ryan is a board member with the Bears and is very high on Pat Fitzgerald. In Look, I love fits. I think he's the perfect man for the perfect job that this is it. They I don't think he should ever sniffed the Bears job. Look, he wants a challenge. Maybe he would, but the at Northwestern you, Congar 03 and nine Because your your their linebacker, it's Northwestern. They've never had a great you've created a great program after the legacy that others who started this whole thing in which you were a player. Starting with Gary Barnett and You know you if you're a taxes if Europe Michigan I did a player a versus player be thing. Um, and it was 22 coaches several weeks ago and once was Jim Harbaugh and the other was Pat Fitzgerald since 2015. And Jim Harbaugh's record is better. Jim Harbaugh plays in the tougher division of the Big 10, but has more wins less losses. But Fitz is thought of hot. Like one guys on the hot seat. The other guy's getting a 10 year contract extension. It's because of expectations and I'm not saying this to To take away anything from Fitz. This is the perfect job for Pat's Fitzgerald. He has a job for life. Well, I've long thought that football coaches both at the college level and in the NFL. Had it some point about 10 years ago. People stopped getting the run up to build a program. The year to be successful in a year. Maybe two. If not, you're out. That should happen, but only in cases like I don't know. Arkansas, right where you You know, you made a couple of bad hires. They're in a row and you gotta move on. Or or maybe, you know, like a lion's head coaching hire that probably should have ended before Matt Patricia's reign as lion's head coach ended but for the most part I don't know that ownerships or or, you know boards or whoever runs the university and in particular setting are really giving the time two coaches to build a program. It's one end of the spectrum with Pat Fitzgerald, right? I mean, he's got forever to build this program over and over and get you know, it's like it's like a five year cycle. It's OK, you lose. You get a couple of seniors who playing the defensive backfield that know how to work together and make plays. You find a playmaker on defense? You recruit a quarterback, maybe who has a nice year, and that's your run at a big 10 Conference championship, right? I mean, it's every every 56 years or so you get the all the pieces together and he makes a run at it, And I think that's fine. It's going to be ranked and he's going to go to the Big 10 championship game and he's going to go to a major bowl game and he probably will win that. And and it's great and it's what I grew up here. Northwestern sucked. Northwestern wasn't thought of anything for football. And now it's sort of like Illinois in Northwestern kind of flipped, and Northwestern even took it to a higher level than what Illinois used to be. Because Illinois every now and then would have really good football teams. Not great year in and year out. But every now and then they'd go to the Rose Bowl of Tony Easton would be here. And Northwestern is really, really good, but I think he's smart and he's he gets paid a lot of money. They have a fantastic facility. Next up. They need to renovate that stadium or do something and then that will be great, too. And he's got. He's got one of the best gigs and he's the perfect man for one of the best gigs. Hurt. Shilling wants off the Hall of Fame ballot. He fell 16 votes shy of election yesterday and asked the Hall of Fame to remove his name from the ballot. We covered a little bit of this yesterday. But The Baseball Writers Association of America has responded today. I like this Hey, will breaking up with us is fantastic, they wrote. The request that Schilling made to have his name removed from the ballot is a violation of the rules. Set forth by the National Baseball Hall of Fame is board of directors. Hall of Fame Board chairman Jane Forbes. Clark said Tuesday in a statement that the board will consider the request on our next meeting. But it is in violation to the rules set forth next year is Shillings 10th and final year on the writer's ballot. He's at 70% of Owt needs 16 to get in as I mentioned. Next year, though, is you know this year was kind of the With nobody getting in and a bunch of, you know, controversy about who should who shouldn't all that kind of stuff. Next year is Alex Rodriguez is first year on the ballot, and it is also Clemens. Bonds and Shillings last year on the Hall of Fame ballot. Yeah, Jason Stark talked about that today. He's one of the voters and I want to play you some of that later. But if you miss the interview with Carmen and your co make sure you download that ESPN Chicago APP and listened to it. Because he talked about how next year there will be two months of debate about those guys who are on the last ballot there. It's going to be huge. Of course, it will. And there should be that kind of debate. They're well. Here's my prediction for the next Hall of Fame cycle. The next story line that we will continue to hear about and will be hand wringing about Is Those who vote for the Hall of Fame and what they'd like the Hall of Fame to do with the character clause. I would imagine that a lot of writers are fed up with having to either live with or work around the character clause, depending on how you want to look at it. How those writers wanna look at it. And I would think.

How NBA commissioner David Stern helped shape the league
"This is a very sad day for the NBA For anybody associated with the League I think for anybody who is a fan of this league fan of the game. Ah Game of basketball period Here or anywhere around the world because David Stern was. I don't WanNa say singularly but certainly of very much responsible for everybody around the world Loving and appreciating this game being able to see this game the expansion of this game and David Stern of of course is No longer with US and Kind of knew this day was coming a few weeks ago when we got the news that he had suffered a brain hemorrhage throughout all of that I kind of stubbornly Felt like this is David Stern. He'll come out of it. I can't imagine I I can't imagine the League has already you've been without him. I can't imagine the world without David Stern and I'm still not sure how to process that. But I did know that when the moment came to have a podcast to discuss thus David stearns legacy and all the complexities of the man That the first person I would wanNA talk to the person sitting across from me in the studio right now. That's my good. The friend former colleague at the New York Times and of course hall of Famer Basketball Hall of Famer Harvey Aronson. Thank you for being good to be here good to be here solemn occasion I I agree and But it's good to be here. Thank you this is. This is tough so we were talking about this a little bit before we started recording and as I just said I can't imagine it's just the the idea that David Stern would Just that he's that he's not among still. There are certain people who you have in such high regard who are such titans titans who are such just just giants of their field or of the world at large that I feel like they're almost unkillable. David Stern like I would not bet on the David Stern versus death. I'm betting on David. Stern like literally going to punch death in the face and said get the fuck Outta here. I ain't ready yet and I I truly I believe these last few weeks ever since the news of the brain hemorrhage that he was going to rally because he is he's as we know he's a fighter and he's stubborn as hell and I figured that would be That would apply across the board and Yeah I still. I still can't quite believe he's gone. You have known him much longer than I have starting in late Seventies. He made his presence felt he was. He was lead counsel will when he came over from his law firm. Proske our rose in these four. Names and FRESCA Rosen Mendelssohn. I always forget the third one pro scour they always I was just called but he made his presence felt around the league and particularly with the media long before he became deputy commissioner in the early eighties and then commissioner in Nineteen Ninety Four. And you know I always found it interesting especially as we went on into the ninety s and into the new century that people looked at the NBA. And they would say you know. David Stern became commissioner. Larry Bird and Magic Magic Johnson entered the League one thousand nine hundred nineteen eighty season and it was a rocket to the moon right from there. And you know it's just a revisionist sense of history because David did not become commissioner until Nineteen eighty-four and bird and magic. Were already in the League. For four years the league was still a very troubled entity. You know almost you know almost a half decade into the bird magic era. There are a lot of issues. There were teams that were said to be on the verge of close of folding there was no salary cap op. There was no drug testing drug plan. A lot didn't happen until David actually became commissioner but those of us who cover the league regularly knew to him and I knew him I knew him from being around but I got my first as we all know our first David Stern phone call. Aw when I was working at the New York Post and I want to say it was probably around. Nineteen eighty one. Maybe and. He's he's Deputy Commissioner Deputy Commissioner or just about to become deputy commissioner and I I had decided as the Knicks beat writer that I was going to befriend Larry Fleisher. Who is the director of the Players Association and fancied myself as pro-labor Grew up in a labor union household and I was going to side with the players before for even knew anything right so I actually let turned over. My story wasn't a column. I think it was a story. Larry Fleisher who proposed doing away with the entire entire NBA draft. Why do we need to draft right? And I'm like you know that makes that makes a lot of sense to me so I write this evolutionary even now much less and you know for several years I kind of win alone and you can kind of make an argument for it. You know. Sort of a free enterprise system right but I wrote the story and David Stern and get a call the next day from Secretary and I pick up the phone and like I said I probably met him three or four or five times and and I answered the phone and he said he gets on and he goes this harvey and I said yes and he goes. I'm going to educate to. I'm going to educate you you for a few minutes. You fucking idiot and we went from there you know. He was merciless but yet always I pulled it back just enough to make you know that you know there's a possibility of lack of actual relationship here. But that was my first recollection of my have of my first. I Real David Stern W up and renew phone call and we all got those. I considered it. I don't know what point I realized is. This was the badge of honor. But this is a badge of honor. And it's funny harvey when we just seeing all the twitter tributes reading everybody's calms the last twenty four hours and we all have as as journalists. Cover this league so much. The same story these very very similar stories of our relationships with David these kind of love hate push rush poll frienemie type relationships where he was both In some ways mentor and Educator especially for you and Ah David our little closer in age so for some of us who came up and he was already well established as the commissioner for a long time before I come into the League or others is that WHO's pieces of red. He's very much kind of almost father figure and besides that he's the keeper of of all the NBA's history and secrets secrets and everything. So he did he would take on this role of like I want to educate. It's funny that he's saying this to you who was basically his almost pure at that point of. He's still doing his job job. He's not even commissioner yet and and you're covering the league but like that's just who he was I guess from the beginning and it certainly is the experience that I had with him and we all yes at some point. Got f-bomb to desk us. I'm glad we can curse on my podcast because David Stern wouldn't have wanted it any other way than for us to say fuck a few times because it was certainly one of his favorite words I I do think that it was probably very different to work for David. I mean reading a lot of the posts today on facebook and twitter twitter from people like Terry Lions and who's part of the communication staff for many years You know saying things like you know you you you didn't arrive at the NBA. Until David Curse you out in for doing something or doing something wrong and our cases I think it was a different different dynamic because to certain extent we did hold some leverage in power. David was marketing his league and it was important Kim particularly in the early years. You know to get the kind of press that he wanted for the sport and the kind of coverage for the athletes. He was trying to sell. So I think to a certain to a certain extent that you know that pullback from the total annihilation that David was capable of was inevitable because he wanted to Always maintain that relationship I remember in one of the Ninety S lockouts. He had a press conference was an update In the middle of lockout and the Times who's had a sign just kind of out of the Blue Murray Chasse who was a chroma generally baseball writer writer and columnist to cover the NBA lockout and Murray was long known to be essentially an ally of the Baseball Writers Association Association. I mean practically slept with ball them going too far but with G.. Those guys I mean it was. He was clearly pro row union in just about everything he wrote and Murray had written a series of articles for the Times that were clearly anti-star anti league and supporting the players. And I remember I was talking to David but after the press conference and Joel Lipman one of the attorneys attorneys with standing nearby and David started to say something to me. That sounded like you know one of these. I'm going to tell you in confidence. You know what's really going on. And y'all grabbed him by the arm and said David David Wait. Wait wait and David turned around and looked at Joel and said this is not Murray. Hey this is harvey and implicit in that or not. So implicit was the notion that I'm on their side. Not that I'm always going to write it the way they want want. I'm one of the regulars. There was a real difference if you one of the regular news who covered that sport and he kind of understood because I I will say this. We all WANNA be impartial. You'll want to write what we think. But it's particularly in the early eighties. Through the the end of that decade as League began to push more and more higher and higher and out of that ditch that it was in you know in the late seventies that all of us who covered the league felt a real pride that we were part of something that was growing. That was something special and David Sense that in all of us I could name you know whether there is Bob Ryan Alien Verizon you know Jan Hubbard Jack McCallum. I think it was. I think he looked at us. Not Addis he's guys or his writer so we're going to. You know who are going to adhere to is disciplined. Alright well what he wanted to but ultimately that we were pro. NBA Hey we believed in the product and we loved it we love the sport and believe in it and that was the difference. I think some of that changed in the later years when he felt this. There was some people coming along. Who are sort of interlopers? Who didn't necessarily have the League's best interest at heart? You know it's interesting too because you're describing you know a- and a general atmosphere in terms of the media and the sports world in general that that I think maybe a lot of my listeners or a lot of fans today probably don't have a true understanding of just because it was a very different world back then basketball was a distant third at best and you know baseball was still the national pastime and football was already a Bima and the NBA. You know forget whether the teams that were possibly going to fold in in the early eighties. When David I took over as commissioner it just the sport as a whole just didn't have the foothold in the capture of the of the collective the public's imagination that it has today this sport is a global a phenomenon of its own and that wasn't the case back then so it was probably really important and earlier on for David to to be able to identify that right? That's a that those of you covered league on a regular basis. Did so because you believed in basketball and believe in the NBA is a sport that that it wasn't just this little niche sport in America that would forever be overshadowed by football and baseball that it was that it had its own distinct identity in promise and and could be on on equal footing with those sports. I mean today. We don't have that discussion that the NBA is here and it is huge and it is to be reckoned with maybe the predictions of overtaking the NFL were a little premature but the NBA. It's I think people today might take for granted not realizing ising how far it had to come and so I think probably did shape a lot of how David saw the coverage and why he was so protective of it and when you talk about or any of US talk about David Redeeming us out and dropping dropping f bombs and whatever else. It's not because it was ever personal and it's not because we had fucked up that badly. Although occasionally we might have. David was just very protective protective of an advocate fierce advocate for his league. And so that's why I didn't mind badge of honor thing is like I kind of understood where he was coming from after awhile now cinder understood that if I pushed back and held my ground and especially if I did have a solid ground extent.
