"base jobs" Discussed on Business Wars Daily

"From wondery, I'm David Brown, and this is business wars daily on this Monday, April 25th. If you've ever struggled with trying to explain a gap on your resume because of caregiving or any of the other myriad reasons people step away from work, LinkedIn now has a way to help potential employers understand why. Last month, the company introduced a new group of job titles that described some of the common reasons folks take a leave of their careers for a while. Now you can label your break one of 13 new options, including full-time parenting, bereavement, caregiving, layoff, or gap year, among others. The entry also allows you to add a brief description about how the break helped you or your career. The move is meant to reduce the stigma around taking a career break. The pandemic caused millions of people to leave or lose their jobs. And women were affected disproportionately by those losses. The Pew Research Center notes that more than a half a million more women than men leave the labor force often to care for children or other family members. LinkedIn's research found that more than half of professionals have a gap of some kind on their resume. However, some experts warn about being too quick to share such personal information on a LinkedIn profile. Especially if you're a woman. Stanford professor Shelley correll told Forbes that there is abundant evidence that mothers face bias at work. In one experiment, employers were more than twice as likely to give a callback to a woman who was not apparent than to a mother with the same skills and experience. The research showed no significant difference for men, regardless of their parental status. But LinkedIn says attitudes around gaps are changing. The company's research found that roughly half of hiring managers say people with resume gaps are an untapped talent pool in this tight labor market and slightly less than half said that they'd be more likely to contact a candidate who provided context about such a gap. LinkedIn isn't the only social media platform looking to help you bolster your career prospects. Rival Twitter is reportedly introducing Twitter articles, which may give users more tweet real estate to share content and showcase their smarts. LinkedIn already offers this feature. Another expected feature called Twitter flock for now will reportedly let you send content only to targeted audiences of up to 150 people, like Instagram's close friends feature. You can limit who can see some of your content input reports. So you can keep more personal posts private. Well, as private as anything can be on social media. And use your public feed for more professional messaging. The overwhelming majority of employers are now using social media in some way to recruit candidates, according to the society of human resource management or sherm as it's more commonly known. To get the attention of hiring managers, it may help to be just a little more social..

"The equity initiative at the Mercatus center at George Mason University before we go to the calls. They'll be simply ask you is it a delusional dream to bring manufacturing jobs back into the country. Or did the Foxconn situation merely go about it the wrong way? Well, I don't think. No. I don't think it's a delusion. At all. In fact, there's some evidence that certain types of manufacturing really resurging in the US, but it's a different kind. It's not going to be the the blue blue collar manufacturing that dominated the economy in the sixties and seventies. Instead, it's going to be, you know, a more advanced manufacturing, the relies a lot on ro- robots and the types of jobs that are going to be you know, in demand for that are. Chops for highly skilled highly educated workers. So really, I think that the real task here is to make sure that our education system is keeping up with you know, with that economy of the future and the people are equipped to to meet those demands. So a better investment of Wisconsin tax dollars might have been in the schools. Perhaps you know, that gets into another debate about the weather dollars exactly turned into education by argument targeted dollars. All right. Matthew injustice, Texas joins us tonight on the Bohannon show with our guest, Matthew Mitchell. Good evening. Matthew in Justin. Hey, Jay Bill. Hi, matthew. How are you guys? We're well. So I guess my comment is your guests seems to be expressing economic intervention through government utility versus free market supply and demand like Larry cudlow talks about a lot. So it sounds like he espouses just to let supply and demand run. Its course versus economic intervention. Okay. What about the is this a pure Lasi fair argument here that that the government keeps hands off? Well, I do think there's definitely an element of laissez faire. What I would say is, you know, go back to what basic economics says works, and, you know, there should be an active role for the government in providing genuine public goods because public goods are under provided by markets. There should be a active role for the government to ensure that contracts are upheld and promises are are maintained. And there's no fraud. There should be a role for the government to internalize extra analogies to make sure that either through property rights or through some other scheme like cap and trade that extra analyses. You know, there aren't environmental extra analogies, but for all of those there's good economic theory to say that it works. But really in neither economic theory Norian economic evidence. Do we find much of a case for using public funds for private firms all right to John in Las Vegas? Good evening. John welcome to the Bohannon Joe. Oh, yes. Sure. I wish we would bring our manufacturing back home. I love the Chinese. But our shoes were better made it home. That's an interesting point that the issue of of quality control. But of course, the Chinese were to make let's say the best news possible. There is I I guess Matthew Mitchell, there's there's just a problem of wage differential here that the Chinese could make shoes out of platinum virtually and and still make them cheaper than than we can make them. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the labor differential there is just so great. And in in many ways, this is a good problem to have is American workers are high relative to Chinese workers are highly skilled and can command high salaries, and so, you know, it makes sense for firms to locate and other places where the firm the labor forces nearly as educated, and you know. Weekend specialize in other in production of other activities. Like, I said, you know, really the change from manufacturing base jobs where it's a blue collar job and wages are are nice. But they're not nearly as high as what you would get from manufacturing. Where people are a highly skilled workforce is programming. The machines that make the do the manufacturing. You know? That's really going to be the future. There's a lot of debate about whether change, you know, creative destruction of capitalism is good or bad. I tend to I tend to side with those who say over the long run. It's it's quite good for consumers and for and for workers. But what you can't do is denied that it exists. You know, I it is changes coming, and you can't just hope for an economy that was back forty forty years ago. That's never coming back. To AJ in Humboldt County, California the Bohannon show. Hello AJ. Thanks for having me on again. You're absolutely true part question. Okay. All right. You mentioned something about subbing out manufacturing to places like China weapons to guidance systems would have you coming back to haunt us. At some point. I thought that we part why didn't we do that under Bill Clinton's that we subbed out weapons guidance systems manufacturer? We were selling guidance information that would help put satellites in orbit. Ignoring the fact that the very same technology that puts satellites and accurate orbit makes ICBM's more accurate. We did do that. Yes. Okay. All right. The other thing is that based on that answer, which I thought was true. I suppose we make a deal with the Taiwanese. And then the time when he's taken over by the Chinese, and we're not in a position to do it because there's a nuclear stalemate, or what have you and they end up with all of our information from that exchange of information with the Taiwanese they're independent now. But then they are independent. They don't always have to be. And of course, I wasn't suggesting that it's ever a wise decision to sublet are sensitive technological information to anybody for any reason whatsoever. And this issue here as far as I know Matthew Mitchell, there was nothing to be manufactured at the proposed liquid crystal spe plan in Wisconsin. That would have been Bill sensitive, right? Yeah. I've never heard any claims that there isn't a militarily sensitive manufacturing going on there. More to come. Stay with us on the Bohannon show. One eight six six five O jimbo's, really big question. A lot of people have had this. For a long time. And maybe we are through trial and error learning some answers back in a moment. "These are jobs that are not straightforward. So whether your social media marketing manager or data entry person or a radiologist there's actually a lot of subtlety in what you are doing. And it begins to look like some of these jobs. We we actually would not be able to automate them until we get to something that is like artificial general intelligence, and until then we have just augmentation systems that wouldn't necessarily disrupt the work of humans. Do you find this this view to be compete? Calling all the idea that perhaps we will not be obviating. The these people will just be augment augmenting them and not necessarily disrupting them. Right. So this is one of the debates that's going on is it is it is going to replace people. Or is it going to augment them? And I think the answer is clearly going to do both and whether you're mostly replaced mostly augmented is going to depend on exactly on on what you're doing the nature of your work when you're thinking in terms of white collar type jobs a knowledge base jobs. I mean right now, if you know things like creativity are relatively difficult to replace so far though that could could well change. So if you're doing something genuinely creative if you're doing something that involves building sophisticated relationships with people than those those are harder to automate. But if you doing something, you know, relatively routine, you know, sort of a relatively routine predictable manipulation of data, and that's going to be much easier to automate, and and I mean, you mentioned radiology I. I mean, there's there definitely is going to be a lot of advancing stuff there. I already know of iphone apps did in some cases have have outperformed for example, human dermatologists, recognizing cancer in in skin conditions, and so forth. So this is happening. What we know is that it's not so much entire jobs that are gonna be replaced as tasks is task within jobs. But if you are suppose, you got to workers both doing the same basic kind of knowledge work and that supposed it half of what each of those people are doing can be automated because it's relatively routine and predictable. Then one possibility is those people get half their jobs automated, and in a used extra time to do other things and that will happen for some workers for some skilled people. But the other possibility is that you've got to workers and half of what they're doing goes away. And now there's only one job, right? You get rid of one of those workers and let one person just focus fulltime. On the stuff that can't be automated. So things consolidate. So I think both of those things will happen. You know? So I continue to believe that there is going to be a big impact on employment because I believe that a lot of what people do is routine and specialized and predictable. So there is going to be a big impact there. I'm having said that you mentioned specifically the house cleaner in my first book the lights in the tunnel. I talked about how it's really hard to automate a house cleaning robot, you know, how that would be really hard to do and it still very hard. That's still science fiction technology, whereas a lot of white collar jobs are much easier. And I- addition to the people that I spoke to in this book, I also talked to some really prominent robotics people in particular Rodney Brooks, and I talked about this issue. And it is true that building a robot that has genuine dexterity that can operate in unpredictable environments, something like a house cleaner or a plumber an electrician, you know, imaging robot. They can do these jobs is really just science fiction. I mean that would be. Something like C three zero from Star Wars. Right. That kind of a robot. I mean is way out there. So these kinds of tasks and jobs are safe..
