"That i do recommend is definitely examining the chronicle to see about what's happening and plenty of restaurants. I mean you'll just go to have dinner at a restaurant. There'll be music there and you know. I have kind of mixed feelings about their food but wairoa's is a taco place on south congress. They have a great outdoor space. And i think most nights they have live music there so you can have a meal and enjoy some music outdoors and it's a lot of fun. That sounds pretty amazing. I love about live music. Yeah and i should say to that again if you do have a car. It's something that i can't recommend it enough. Is you can take a little excursion to green hall which is in this small town. Called green spelled german g. r. e. n. e. It's just outside the another great small town called new braunfels But green hall is just a terrific old dancehall. I think that they have music. Three hundred sixty five nights out of the year and they're plenty of huge like a listers who still go there to perform. You know george strait every now and then still goes in performs at green hall. The other famous one is Lucan bach which is outside of fredericksburg. Which is a bit more of a drive out of town but again you can make a wonderful excursion going to see live. Music lucan bach. You can see the scenery in the hill country There's plenty of stuff to do. Also outside of fredericksburg as well as the albert ice house which is a really great only in texas experience. I mean this place is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. But i believe they have music wednesdays through sundays. You know. grab a beer. It's just a beautiful setting highly recommend that and there's another great spot to on sunday nights About an hour outside of town There's this teeny town called seat texas. Which has a dance hall called sef shahal which is really like stepping back in time. You'll still hear people speaking check with one another when you go to this place. So if you're if you're that sort of thing do yourself a favor and check out the dance halls you can. There's a wonderful organization called texas dancehall preservation. Give them a google. I think their website might be texas dancehalls dot org. They have like a whole listing of dancehalls. You can plan a whole trip around doing that. If you're into that sort of thing absolutely we'll put more make sure to put that in the show notes. Okay we only have a few minutes left. We can't miss talking about the food. I know when people talk about austin. Oh you gotta go to franklin's blah blah blah and next thing you know you've been waiting in line for like three hours you know. Let's not do that. We're not talking about. Franklin's barbecue because franklin's barbecue bhonapha teat named it the the best barbecue in america some years ago people start waiting in line for that barbecue before six. Am but here's the thing. If you if you go to that line i guarantee you most of the people you talk to are not from austin now. I have tried his barbecue. It was it the best brisket i've ever had probably but there is so much great brisket in austin the idea of waiting in line for hours for brisket is absolutely ludicrous. And here's the thing erin. Franklin learned how to cook from a a man. By the name of john. Mueller whose family was behind barbecue establishment. Called louis. louis. Miller's which is in the town taylor. It's about a thirty mile drive outside of town. You can drive up to louis. Miller's in taylor which is my favorite barbecue in the entire state it is delicious you go there. You're getting a piece of history in addition to your barbecue. So you can drive up to taylor get your brisket sausage banana putin pie all the trimmings. Be back sleep in and less time than you would have to deal with that damn fine class so Yeah come on. Let miller's over franklin's no question but you don't even have to drive that far out of town to get great barbecue because it's all at your fingertips there in fact. Franklin's barbecue is on the east side. There's another spot they're called sam's barbecue. I have a podcast called vanishing postcards i did. I did a podcast that featured this place. Sam's it was opened in the nineteen fifties the family that owns it now. Basically the story. Is they one spot in a gambling. Game back in the nineteen seventies since then the return on that investment have grown exponentially. There were some portland based developers who offered them five million dollars for the land and they said no they said we're the last black business around here. We've got a hold down the fort and you go there. The barbecue was still absolutely delicious. You're not gonna have to wait in line and if the owner brian is there. He's a real character. He was a pallbearer at stevie. Ray vaughan's funeral. In fact. Stephen loved the barbecue at sam so much when he was recording at When he was recording in. New york with david bowie. He had them shipped him some barbecue up there. And if brian is there he'll talk to you he might even take you back. Show you the pit. The whole nine yards also another great old classic barbecue. Spot downtown is ironworks. If you're staying at the four seasons it's really just about two blocks away it has been there forever. The food is delicious. And if you want some more new school barbecue noor spots that i do give thumbs up to is terry black's barbecue. You might have to wait a little bit longer. But you're still not going to be waiting in line for four hours like you would at franklin so that is my tangent about barbecue in austin right here in a nutshell like you said i think we can actually probably have all those spots while our friends was still waiting in line. Franklin absolutely then sit them a fiber and grab a bite of. There's that way to get the simple totally now. Awesome to you've gotta you gotta do the mexican food as well. I'll tell you to. There's a distinction between tex mex and mexican. Both are absolutely wonderful. You should do. both you. Shouldn't confuse one with the other. Interestingly enough you know it used to be hard to get interior mexican now getting harder to find good old school tex-mex. I think the oldest most famous place in austin for tex-mex is Matt's el rancho. But i'm pretty partial to modest modest has two locations Highly recommend that my favorite though might be. There's outside a town in the little town called b cave. there's a place called rosie's tamale house so i mentioned kraus's e springs and hamilton's pool earlier you can easily go swimming at either quasi springs hamilton spool. Then go to rosie's for lunch. And if we're talking about tex-mex i mean i think people tend to think about your you know your jesus allows your rice and beans but i think one of the great tex-mex experiences is carnegie sada. Those are stew beef tips in gravy and my favorite you can find at cisco's cisco's has been opened since nineteen fifty. They have a fantastic breakfast in addition to bakery. It really is one of those old school. Only in austin kind of institutions. You'll find it on the east side so cisco's definitely gets two thumbs up for tex-mex for the interior options. You know on the high end is to san miguel which really was one of the very first places in the country that showcased interior mexican food. It's been there for well over forty years but man. The food is absolutely delicious. I think diana kennedy who is one of the greatest living purveyors of mexican helped them Got off the ground with their initial menu and you know i still give my highest recommendation Newer but also excellence on the. The high end of the spectrum is el alma. I've never had a bad meal there all sorts of great stuff a bit in the mid range Down in south austin. There's a great spot called saason. I believe that the woman who runs it is from michoacan. I've had delicious call does there. I mean really authentic but on the cheaper end of the spectrum you know one of my favorites that meals in town. You know. there's a place burn it road. It has no frills. Nothing fancy far from tourists or anything. But there's a place called tuck hideous. Rhonda's number three. It's kind of a chain called tuchus at dusk. The number three is the best one you go. There get the gr- enchiladas beverly's they boil the green enchiladas with rice and beans or the carnage asada. They'll serve it with nope. Elite those the cactus absolutely delicious. I it just how men and it's not a and it's gonna cost you like eight bucks. It is so it'll cost you less than a burrito at chipotle to do that in another great place. That's kind of in the same Arranges steadiest around us on the side is gothic. How benito those are my recommendations for tex mex and mexican right there oh man. There's so many good choices in my wife is hispanic and she loves find that authentic mexican food and it's a little bit hard to find here. Nashville we definitely miss it from california so We're at austin and find it. I will say this much tex-mex as i said there's a distinction between tex-mex and interior tex-mex is authentic as well. You just have to respect that it's a regional mexican cuisine. That just evolved on the other side of the border. It does not deserve a lot of a snobbery that it has received a lately. I go to mexico. You're gonna find different food in oaxaca than what you're gonna find the yucatan than what you're gonna find in the north so that's the same thing but you know out that's a conversation for a different day right there absolutely. So why haven't i really appreciate coming on a certain all these amazing tips for us and i have a whole laundry list of things. I'm going to do when it comes out there to visit next and so but now for the final countdown if some of the only time for one meal when they visited austin were should go. And which the you know. I'm going to actually say the chicken fried steak at hoover's chicken fried steak is one of those Dishes where you always going to hate yourself after you eat it but man is it good when you're in it so i say the chicken fried steak hoover's that's delicious. You threw me for a curveball. I thought for sure we talking about barbecue. Now like you said you grew up in in the austin area and you go back and forth all the time so obviously have some great stories which one do most memorable. Well you know growing up there was a was a great experience. You know like i. I saw the immune lou harris and willie nelson perform. When i was eleven like a taping austin city limits that was great but You know out out. I talked about going out to the country. I mean so many of my great memories just involved doing just that. And i remember when i was eleven. My dad bought this old. Nineteen fifty five chevy bel air and we drove out to this spot called enchanted rock and it was the first time in the hill country. I remember climbing up to the top of that rock and looking around and seeing just that beautiful hill country outside of town and there are some moments in life that are perfect and that's absolutely one of them. That's really cool. Creating those special memories with your with your kids like i. I have my young kids now or you're doing it with your parents. Those other members of what it's all about so speaking of happy times and good memories Where's the happiest happy hour in austin. My favorite dive bar and i did my show vanishing postcards dedicated. The first episode to this place is the dry creek cafe. This is the bar that time forgot it opened in nineteen fifty-three back then. It sat on the edge of the country. now it is surrounded by mansions. But you go there. It is still a hardcore dive. The places basically a dilapidated shack And when i went there You know last year at the The bartender there was only the third bartender to ever work there. So it is a real great old school die at the same time. I think if you were to talk to a local. I have never done this but everyone swears by the happy hour at. Jimmy's little longhorn saloon. That's a dive in north austin. And they have something they're called It's called chicken bingo and it has to do with like a chicken. And that's all i can say about that but everybody raves about gondal jenny. Genie's little longhorn saloon for happy hour so that you can participate in the chicken bingo right on right on. Well things do whenever i travels. Check out the local pizza. What's the best pizza in austin. Oh for heaven's sake. If you're in austin you shouldn't be doing pizza and tacos man that's come on taco nakos tacos. What if you have to have pizza. There's a place in west austin that quite a bit called the chipp alina brick oven pizza. Also some pretty solid wood fired brick pizza as well on sounds good Yeah i mean. I'm i'm gonna definitely eat the barbecue but sometimes i gotta have my pizza fix so obviously did that A fifteen hundred miles a tour across texas visiting all these bogo cities and everything like that. So i'm sure on. That journey creates awesome travel tips. Like what's one of your favorite. Well i mean. I think traveling in general. Just don't try to do too much. I mean people always ask me. You know what to see and do when you go to a place. I mean something. This ironic is. I actually work as a tour guide in new york. And when reflecting on my travels you know although walking tours can be wonderful you get so much great historic perspective and information that you might not get otherwise. I don't know. And i really do travel like that. When i travel what i like to do is i honestly just kinda like to find a bar and i not even for the drinking aspect. I just like to find a bar. And i like to talk to people. You'll get a great pulse on a place when you do that. If you can find a good local dive talked to some locals. They're going to tell you about what you should be seeing and doing. And i promise you you will have an incredibly rewarding experience if you can. You know kind of allow yourself. Some flexibility remain open to suggestions. And don't try to over schedule yourself. And i will say in regard to austin. It's not the place for massive attack's sightseeing if you wanna sightseeing you know. Go down the road to san antonio austin. It's an experience. I totally agree. That's really the reason why this podcast is that that's what i would do. I would always go whether sitting there talking to someone in the bus at a bar at the restaurant or whatever and finding the best things to do in those cities from For those locals. Because i think i develop a better sense of what the city was like and develop gritter just like experience during those days that i was in that city. And that's really. I mean a lot of people. Don't have that extrovert personality. So that's why. I have these conversations with people like you so that way. They don't have to come out of their shell. True and So that's why we have you on the show so speaking of that. I like you mentioned you. Do the tour guide their new york. Kids how the audience a little bit more who you are what you do. And then if people have questions about your podcast about austin or revenue neutral guide business over there in new york. What's the best way for them to reach on social media so my background is actually as an actor and performer. I've been privileged enough to perform on the stages of carnegie hall and lincoln center but my latest endeavor as i've referenced a few times now is a podcast called vanishing carts. It is a documentary. Podcast basically it is the product of a fifteen hundred mile texas journey through the series listeners. Really invited to join me on a road trip. Where we are exploring the hidden divergence frequently threaten histories that can be discovered by exiting the interstates. The places we go to don't make the pages of glossy magazines. You're not going to see them on instagram. I actually wouldn't describe it as a travel show. I'd say it's more of a people show that's informed by my travels and it's off to a great start digital trends has already named at one of the best podcast of twenty twenty one. It's gotten great press in publications like the dallas morning news austin american statesman the hometown. Npr affiliate k. u. t. and I'd be honoured if if you give it a listen you can find it on Apple spotify wherever you get your podcasts. I mean you're listening to a podcast right now so wherever you're listening to this. "They have like movies in the park. Well there are some parks where they have movies. But what is my favorite thing. Is i think even better than that is downtown on congress avenue. There's the paramount theater which is grand movie palace. I believe it was built in nineteen fifteen and throughout the summer. They screen classic movies there and growing up. I mean my parents. I would go there just about every weekend. And i let me tell you. I saw lawrence of arabia. I saw casa blanca. I saw all about eve. I mean sunset boulevard to see a classic movie on that big screen. They're you know if you're traveling you'd think you know what i really go see. A movie will absolutely. It's it's something terrific to do. So i highly recommend that as well. I've honestly never done it. But austin is worthy. Alamo draft house started and they're very famous. I mean they screen in addition to first run movies. They will screen classics and random b. movies but They will also serve like a dinner theme dinner or a meal with it. That has like a lot of fun. Accompaniments people absolutely rave about that experience as well Sounds like a lot of fun to. We're all about netflix. At our house we don't really go to the movies too often. But i think something like that where it's more of an experience whether it's a paramount. Or the alamo draft house. Something like that. It's more of an experience and take the kids to and show them what it was kinda like growing up for me and everything. I think that'd be really awesome thing to do now. Let's take a step back for people that are listening. I'm here nashville. People listening all over the world. If we're wanna come to austin we're gonna fly into the airport there for acts international airport. I've actually flown through there on the way to mexico before so to fly into the main airport. They're getting around from the from the airport to the city. Do we take public transportation. Do we run a hard taken uber. Like how do we get from the airport to the city. And then how do we get around to see all these wonderful things to do in austin. So here's the deal if you're only in town for two nights and you're staying like downtown in the central area downtown south congress east austin something like that. I think it is perfectly fine to take a cab from the airport and just do the uber thing. If you're doing that but i will say. Public transportation in austin is terribly unreliable. And i think at as i said earlier if you do have the time one of the beauties of awesome is that you can get out to the country very easily. If you do have the time as well you could actually make a day trip in. Go down to san antonio if you want so i would definitely recommend consider renting a car. If you're into that. I mean austin is not the most pedestrian friendly of cities and nor does it really have the great arteries to support public transportation. So that is something that you should consider but you know if you are only there for two days and you are going to be downtown in the main central area. You can do the uber thing perfectly easily. If you wanna do that over sure are if you're a liberal more adventurous and maybe risking your life a little bit i like the lime scooters and like uber scooters those those type of things you can get around those as well. You can't will warn you. I mean something to consider that parking now is is more of an issue than it used to be a number of years ago so you will have to contend with that you know having a car definitely has its benefits. I will say okay. Now that makes sense and if we're talking about where we're gonna stay like you just mentioned for only there for a couple of days. It probably makes sense to stay right there in the core downtown area of the city but if we're there for save four five days like i'm going to be there for conference coming up and i'm gonna be there for almost a whole week saying near the convention center area If somebody's going to stay there for a week and kind of just explore all that austin has to offer worship they say for that. Well i mean. I will always recommend staying downtown in the core area. I'll give out like a number of suggestions. I mean none of these. These aren't the most budget friendly. But if you're planning like a dream trip to austin obviously the four seasons is always going to be a fabulous hotel. The four seasons in austin is right there on lady. Bird lake If you're there in august. That's when you know austin has the largest bat population in the world and i promise you. It's actually beautiful sight. You can stay there at the four seasons. Look out your window and every night at dusk you will just see this beautiful swarm of bats just flying from under this bridge. I mean there. There are millions of that. Live in this one bridge downtown. So that's incredible and it's also very convenient to to everything another good hotel downtown as well. That's a bit further up. Congress towards the capital is the stephen f. austin i believe that's operated by intercontinental It's very convenient centrally located Another good old. One is the driscoll. Now at the same time with the with the driscoll and stephen f. austin they are pretty close to six street and i think you know although six street is an incredibly popular entertainment district i'd say it's probably comparative to maybe like bourbon street in new orleans. Something like that. I will say in recent years. It's gotten a bit seedy. And i think if you talk to most locals most old often people really don't go and hang out there because it can get crowded it can get rowdy and it can also you know it's gotten a little bit sketchy in recent years. There's some vagrancy so you know i think just about any downtown city in america right now is is wrestling with issues. austin is not immune to these issues as well so if you are downtown even like four years ago. Wouldn't have to worry. But i think you do need to have a bit of street sense about you if if you do that but another wonderful place now. To stay is one of the most popular areas. Now in austin is south congress and there are a number of wonderful small boutique hotels that you can find along. South congress The austin motel. That's a wonderful old space from the nineteen thirties. That's been beautifully renovated his now. Really a a hip. They've done a great job with it. It's kind of a mid range option. But every now and then you can actually get some bargains. I mean if you're going there around south by south west forget about it. That's a good place. As is the san. Jose hotel Which is really just kind of a few doors. Down from the austin motel. I've never been there But the south congress hotel as well. appears to be very nice and the last time i was there actually. I went out to dinner at a restaurant that was in a hotel on the side called. Arrive austin it's on east sixth street. Some east austin is really happened right now. A lot of cool stuff going on there and you might want to take a look at that as well as the east austin hotel. And if you stay on south congress or east austin any of these places that i've mentioned really you're going to be within walking distance. Distance of restaurants bars live music venues. Plenty of things to do. So you're not going to have to worry about you. Know hopping in the car for everything or take an uber everywhere. If you do that. So that's kind of what i would recommend. Now of course if you wanna do like the airbnb option which a lot of people wanna do you know. My advice again without is just to try to stay as centrally located as possible. You'll do well to try to find stuff around south congress south. I that area clarksville. You'll do well to to stay close.

"Welcome to the show haley. Thanks for having me. It's a pleasure to be here today. We're talking about one of my favorite cities austin texas at the city. I almost moved to. I had not found the right place. Here in nashville. So it's a city i love. I love to go visit. And i can't wait to hear your your tips for the city. We'll thank you. Austin is my hometown now. I'll tell you right now. I'm talking to you today from new york. So if you hear some sirens in the background i apologize. I've lived in new york long enough. I have earned the right to call myself a new yorker. But i also one of a proud few nowadays who can claim to and born bread and buttered in the city of austin texas. I always try to get back there as often as i can. You know if. I was still there. I would probably be complaining nonstop about how much it has changed the traffic. This and that but living here really gives me perspective. And i can get back there and there's so much there that i can appreciate and i can recognize so much of the beauty. That is still there. Something that is kind of funny as i find whenever i get back there i kinda go back to all of the old places that i knew and remembered from when i was growing up. And you know. I've i've i've heard about new things but so when you talk to me you're really kind of getting the perspective of old austin. I'm in some ways. I'm i'm of a time capsule in that regard of that's fantastic. It's one of those things that those comforts for those memories that you have growing up there really kinda just bring you back home but we mentioned new york city all i can think about. Is that old pace picante commercial. All the cowboys hung hanging around the fire. You know in the old west and everything like that and somebody asked for some for some hot sauce or whatever. Somebody's taste somebody made in new york city. Get a rope. I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm bi cultural. I have earned the right to call myself a new yorker for whenever. I'm in the mood to do so. I will always be a native texan as well so i really do get to borrow the best of both worlds right on so Obviously like you mentioned you go back and forth between new york and austin on a regular basis. I'm sure you plan your trips around the weather and a different around different festivals. And things like that. So what time of year should people plan their visit when they when they're going to go to austin look. I always you know if i can. I try to go to austin in january february to get away from the cold new york city winters. That's just me in texas. They're really kind of two seasons their summer. Not summer you can. You can trust that the summer is going to be brutally hot but you know for the rest of the year is pretty mild and an enjoyable now. Of course the weather in texas. Turn on a dime. You can walk inside a building and you might walk in. And it's in the seventies outside you. Walk out fifteen minutes later. You nose down in the forties or fifties or something like that but for me. I like to go there in the winter as i just said But bluebonnets season in the spring. You know that's march april when you get to see all the beautiful wildflowers. That's a great time. I personally think that. October is one of the most beautiful months of the year. So you know october's a terrific time and you know. Obviously the heat during the summer is is pretty unbearable for most but some are has its benefits as well so it really just kind of depends on you know how much you can take that and i mean obviously the summer is hot. That's one thing. I'm gonna use to year in nashville as well. But at least you have like barton springs to be able to take a dip in the water and cool off and everything like that so if you only go there in the wintertime. You probably not gonna be able to do that absolutely now. We'll say. Barton springs is open year round and i have actually gone swimming in barton springs in the winter. Actually growing up. My dad. And i went there a few times when it was actually maybe in the thirties or forties outside and the thing about barton springs. If you've never been barton springs is one of the greatest swimming pools in the nation I tell anyone if you're going to austin that is an absolute must do. It is a natural artesian fed spring. Who'll in in the middle of the city. The temperature is constant constant. Sixty eight degrees so if you go there in the summer you jump in the water. It is a brutal shock. But it's also going to be sixty eight degrees in the wintertime as well. So if you go there and it's cold out you're going to see some steam rising and it could be pretty pleasant surprisingly so i've been there in the winter as well one of the great things about austin or just the incredible amount of outdoor activities. There are to do and the swimming activities aren't just limited to barton springs People often ask me what. I miss about austin one of the things that i missed. The most about austin is even as much as it's grown as bad as the traffic has gotten. If you know what you're doing you can still be the country within like fifteen to twenty minutes and there are so many other wonderful swimming holes that you can explore. I mean you could take a trip to austin just devoted to swimming one of my absolute favorites about a forty minute. Drive outside of town is kraus's e springs. That's in the town of spice. Would it is a beautiful swimming hole. there's a little waterfall there. It's an incredible verdant tranquil environment. You can do that. Also one of the most spectacular grottos in the country hamilton's pool which is even closer to austin that that really won't take you long to get to it all now because of cove and a few things this past year. They actually did. Close it to swimming. Hopefully next summer it'll be open for swimming again. But it really is one of the most magnificently beautiful places that you can see in this country. I saw buzzfeed list where they were mentioning these beautiful places in the country that you've never heard of hamilton school. Made the list. So you can do that. There's blue hole in wimberly. The barton creek greenbelt which is actually in the city of austin limits. Has some wonderful swimming spots as well. I mean if you like to swim. Awesome is the place to do. It really is well. That sounds like a lot of fun. Especially right now. It's summertime right now. We're recording this and it's nice and hot. I wanna go out there and take a dip in cool off for sure so when we're talking about also planning visit there are times when the city's super crowded with different festivals and there's also different other things that go on other events throughout the year. Is it a good idea to go there during south by south west or new limits. Absolute the hell out of town. South by south west comes through. You know people. When i tell people from austin they'll be like he'd south by southwest said. We always left town. Never south by south west was going on. I mean i'm old enough to remember when that thing started. It was a very small regional musical festival. Totally different deal. I mean the traffic. It is impossible to do anything and so i. I really recommend staying away from austin when when that's happening now. Acl i've done acl a few times and that can be a really great time but you know you have to be committed to doing acl and making acl. The main point of your visit if you're coming to town around then as well okay. That makes a lotta sense. What about like more lesser known festivals. Where the city doesn't get too crowded. it's more locals. We can still go enjoy yourself and still be able to see the rest of the city without being overwhelmed by hordes of tourists. Well you know a great local tradition is yours birthday. This thing started in nineteen sixty three. It is really hard to explain if you've never been there. I like to say it's kind of a miniature woodstock i mean. It is a hippie festival. We're talking drum circles. Basically a bunch of people invade. There's this park. Central austin close to the university called peace park. It's the last saturday in april and man. The people watching that you're going to see there is fantastic. They talk about. Keep austin weird. Well yours. Birthday is austin weirdness at it's finest so if you want a a true local texas experience that's something that i would Would maybe recommend considering getting a taste of right on that. I think that'd be a lotta fun but maybe some this wouldn't be super interested in that when you talk about things that you do on the summer one thing i was reading.

I would say would have to be probably under sweden variety for the most part of either a soy or a almond or an haute. Yes something really clean right. So we'll talk a little bit about how to pick alternative milks and what to be on the lookout for if i had to pick one. I'd say i'd say soy milk. It's the only alternative The mainstream alternative milk. That's made from beans. I'm and we know how healthy beans are for us to be just again. It depends what you're after so like for most of us. We don't need to worry about protein rate of anything. If you listen to the podcast ahead with darren orlean. We talked about how actually we should be eating like a low protein diet right as opposed to a high protein low protein. If you don't care about protein then you're not going to be drawn as much to maybe showing this eden soy right here. This unsweetened soy one. Eight ounce glass is twelve grams. South grams approachable grams of protein. It's like over the over the moon high whereas whereas this almond milk right here. This has got one gram of protein right there. Yeah, I don't suggest you go to the driving range too primitive to the gun range to practice. Yeah. Please, please. You've got to be clear. Sometimes you will be very clear. Stories. Richard is on 1 83, and he wanted to weigh in on the parks and recreation story, continuing talks about allowing adult beverages to be sold at the Zilker Cafe. This is an old cafe. It's right there near the entrance of Barton Springs pool. It's It's probably been there just as long as the Zilker Zephyr I would think or whatever it's called whatever it's called now, But there's talk, maybe allowing a liquor permit. If you will bear and wine at the at the cafe there. What do you think, Richard? Well, you know, it's a family atmosphere down there. I think they're going to run more families off. You know, a lot of people drink for the taste. Lot of people drink to get drunk. Um I just don't see it as a family environment, but You know what if they'll bring me a couple of of Miller High last for the Zucker Flower? I might I might get on it. There you go. There you're going. I mean again. My initial reaction that this kind of I'm not sure about that. But talking about the family environment. Listen, uh, the Dail Diamond is a family environment and they sell beer and alcohol Q Two Stadium. No doubt. They want that to be a family environment, yet they're going to sell beer and alcohol. So maybe I'm overreacting here. I'm just you know, uh, I have concerns. I guess you know what the lifeguards potentially might have to deal with. And then you'll have to deal with. You know, we don't want drug people. You're assuming everybody that goes to the Zilker Cafe is only people that go to Barton Springs pool to swim. No, no, they're they're assuming that that there's no drinking in the parking lot before people go into the poor. Well, there might be that It is a lot of that. That's that's what you do. Yeah, sure, but it's uh, you know. Most likely things will be just fine. But it's It's just a little bit of a different deal than what I grew up with their and I can see how it was Some like that gentleman there. It could. It could. Robin Wright. I don't know that it could remove the family atmosphere. Buzzkill, man. Come on what people want to go to the park and have fun, And sometimes that means a beer. Come on, Discouraging that I am not discouraging. You're telling me you don't have beer and alcoholic family gatherings. I don't know how to go to family gathering and not have beer and That's my point. You have to have it. You're kind of overreacting. You're You're kind of being a fuddy duddy. I might be buzzkill. Florida Governor Ron de Santa says Governor Greg Abbott is asking all states to send personnel and resources. The said that he was on Fox just a few minutes ago explaining why the state of Florida Stepping up to help Texas While the sad thing about this is is the federal government has just completely abdicated its responsibility. We had policies under President Trump that we're working. The border was under control, and Biden comes in, and they knowingly revoked all these policies knowing what was going to happen, and now they're just showing really a callous disregard, and it's not just those border communities that are being affected. They're stepping up and filling a void where the federal government has left this lack of leadership, and so when they asked for support, I felt it was the right thing to do that Florida would be there to help them out. "Give us a call. 5.283605 90 That's 512836. 05 90, Sean. Um, John, What is happening out there with forbearance is and all that? Yeah, so, but the big news last week so If you're called back in September, I believe it was the CDC announced nationwide eviction on more tar mortar men eviction for nonpayment of rent. Basically, this is for people rented. Correct correct on DSA. So that was the end of the year. It looks like the CDC will not renew that, thankfully on DSA that will lift but Doesn't mean Austin landlords and property owners are out of the woods because last week the There's two things that the Austin has. Right now there's a 60 day. In addition to the normal notice to vacate awesome, requires a 60 Day notice of proposed eviction before you can give a notice to vacate that just started during Cove. It That is being that was extended to April 1st. Will that ever go away? That's the question. Maybe forget better leadership. Yeah, There's an election today, right? Yeah. Exactly on then at that. Council meeting, The mayor strongly hinted that he was going to extend his Austin wide moratorium on evictions for nonpayment of rent, Probably until that same April. 1st is that for the people underneath the bridge is everywhere to go. Apparently, there were allowed to stay as long as you can't fire on the way here. When I was driving here at 1, 83 and Anderson Lane, there's a campfire another. I didn't think I don't know if that was legal. Uh, wow. So what else is happening out there? Shot on real, uh, legal stuff happening with real estate. If you heard anything about the four barren stuff with Fannie, Freddie or the federal government would have been much more so I haven't heard much about that lately. You know, there's still a lot of talk about another. Relief package coming for Cove it and That was going to be divided up into two different packages. And who knows what's going on, right? I mean, they've been talking and talking Coppola. Yeah, right. So what's this thing about movie theaters and retail in a sense you your your newsletter today talked about how some of the big movie production companies wasn't Time Warner. It was. It was Warner Brothers, her brother. By the week and a half ago, Warner Brothers made a big splash in the sort of movie world when they announced that they're 2021. All the new releases would be going directly to was an HBO Max, which they own also so no delay. No delay. They won't have to the theaters first. They're going right, HBO, Max. And that made a huge splash. Because what does that do to movie theaters right on before commercial property owners? What does that do? You know, two movie theaters. Their bigs. Yeah, Those are those are anchor tenant. Let's say those air anchor tenant their long term. They make money and they're not going anywhere. Kind of deal. All right. Well, uh, what do you do now? And then the question is Are they going to survive? What's the movie industry? Even gonna look like and 2021 beyond. I'll be honest. I haven't been to a movie since last probably February. Saturday in my house. Well, that's you know, when you combine it with how good movie theaters are getting home with theaters are getting Um, you know, I've been once since the nights to go every week, based on bond. It's just It's scary about what's gonna happen to those movie theaters and And commercial property owners with those places and so you know, I looked and I read some articles about you know what are some alternatives and people are sort of thinking outside the box, and I think What? My gasses from movie theaters or survived. They're gonna have to become like Alamo where you offer, not just, you know, a viewing the seat that you could watch a movie Mother experience the full experience right where you're getting. Yeah, but the number of I guess viewers that are going to be allowed to who knows in the future of people. Are you even listening even if the vaccine was out and commonplace? I would still have qualms walking into a theater with 150 people watching the movie. I'm going to Vegas. It was, like, get a job. Don't go yet. I've got wind that September it worth going yet, But you don't know it's just, you know, we talk about this new normal, right? Somebody asked me today wondering whether interest rates going to do Are they going to go up anytime soon? With this vaccine coming out? Obviously the move in the market and that has some effect pushing interest rates up. The problem is, is that all the investors worldwide? They want to know what the future holds right and in the past economically, they could look at certain trends and things and understand where things are going. Now, though, it's completely different. There is a new normal out there. Right. There's new business is doing very well. There's older business is not doing well. You know it, Z I'm blessed to be in the business of doing very well. But I know a lot of having friends that are not. And so what, Even if, with the vaccine what is the new normal for the economy look like for people for jobs on a daily basis for investments. What is that new normal and until the market figures out what that new normal is and is comfortable with it? I think you're going to see some volatility. And I think you're going to see with that volatility and that unknown of what that normal is. People are still gonna be packing their money. When I say people, these big investors packing their money into mortgage backed securities and bonds, keeping rates low, But, you know, we talked here back in one of our march or April or whatever it was. All there's going to be a 25% reduction in the demand for office space. Have we seen? Some of that may be, But you know, nowadays, I would say it's probably not gonna be that much. I would guess who knows? Maybe No way. Look at Austin. Yeah, Well, you got HP Oracle test, Right? Bam, Bam, Bam, bam! All these companies that are moving their headquarters here. I mean, there's some national magazines put out. Everybody's going to Austin right now, uh, And so we look around. Our commercial stuff here were like that's not really affected, right? But I guarantee you in other states where California for an example right? I bet it is adversely affected more than we're seeing here in our in our little bubble of Austin Metro area. You wanna get John riled up? Have you seen the plans for Lamar changes in Lamar between Riverside and Barton? Was that Martin? Great. Barton Springs Wherever that is Riverside and Barton strains that Z, you know, almost that will stretch on Memar that's very crowded just across the river. Yeah, like where the slots cheeses all which is not there anymore, And they're putting in a tower there. The world is lost. He says. Yeah, I didn't even know that. Well, they just announced plans. They're going to change that road a little bit. They're going to remove lanes. Oh, wow. Really Gonna make a bike lanes at exactly? Yeah, well soon is that Taco Cabana was gone from there. I tried to stay away from there. What was that There was a place right beside the type of behind southern Joanna. There's a place I had over a restaurant, Great brunch, Lodging house. That's what their brunch was so good there. Dinner was so good everything that he could go play pitching, but, yeah, exactly that spot. Yeah, they have ongoing rivalry with moonshine of who is the oldest house Still standing in an Austin? Is there anything there right now? Is there? Is there any What's in that? "Trace elections right now, and also if you're looking for a fall color tree You can't do any better than to go look at it when they're in color, because, like some Red Oaks, get different colors and others. There's a radio down the street from me. That just gets these really dull. And they're not ugly or anything, but they're just not what I expect. Dull maroon brown kind of leaves that sort of hang on all winter. On Then mine gets his gorgeous colors of tan your brain and burned me and, you know, beautiful lime green colors. All right, let's we lost our Carl caller. I was just about to pick up your call about Bermuda seeds. So call back if you want to talk about that a little bit more, but I Okay, So maybe this is him calling back By 1283605 90 is the number to call or text While we're waiting for that collar, I got a photo of African violet. Now this is not a plant that I have personally ever grown, however. Mother. Was just a miracle worker with African violets. She had the most beautiful violence. This before and after shot of the violence, it says. Can you tell me why my African Violet is turning brown and crispy on the blooms? It's been under grow lights and watered from the bottom dish. User before and after pictures and boy was it gorgeous? Theo only thing I could tell you that I really learned from other is that you? You don't there? Come like a fight us. You don't move him around. If they're happy in a certain light exposure, which is typically gonna be eastern white. In the morning. Morning, son. Is what they like the best now the appearance of this looks like either it got way to try or it got way too wet. On it. And if you also met, moved it from the location. It was in I just don't have enough information, but it doesn't look healthy. It looks bad, so it's same symptoms, though, for over and under watering. So there you go. Okay, Here's our This is the same guy that Bermuda see guy. Looks to me like it might be. Can I take the Bermuda comb? Okay. Hey, Mike. Sorry about that. Okay? What was your question about that Ai planet to ream you to grass is embarrass pots and my scene, Augustine. Plan or Bermuda grass seed hoping for it to fill into these Barris spots. I had a gardener put it in, he tilled the soil put in Topsail. It looked to me like you just put the perm you to grass seed on top, and I was looking online, and it said he should cover it. So when, like about a day later, I covered it. With some topsoil on. That was about three weeks ago, and it's uh it doesn't look like it's really German eating. Is it too late in the season? Yeah, yeah, that's the problem. It'll probably germinate in the spring when it gets good and hot, but it likes her hot soil. Okay to Germany. Is there any other way to plan for me to grasp? You know, like with us? ST Augustine, you get suddenly that in But yeah, Bermuda comes and sod and they're so yeah, and some improved varieties of it to some better than just the common seed form. Like, Try that these areas that are I put sign in there last year and the year before, and it seems they're certain areas just You know, the ST Augustine doesn't do good over the long run. Where the rest of the you know the ST Augustine. One looks fine. Yeah, some some areas, but if it's too hot, it could be just too dry and hot for the ST Augustine. That's where the Bermuda will want to be. OK, So you think that might be a good way to go later on? Yeah, you can. You can get a few squares and put it in. You think it's too late to do that now or just wait Now you can put the sod and now it's a very good question. You could do that now. Now it's just going to go dormant for the winner, but the roots will continue to grow. Okay, so, Yeah, You can certainly do that. Okay. All right. Very much for the help my prayer. You're quite welcome. Thanks for calling K O. B. J. Now, it's said to South Austin. Hey, Martin. How you doing? Um, wonderful. Okay. This questions about flaming C. Max and my darling Black. Janice, If you're lifting out there, I remembered what our question was two days ago, killing me. I couldn't remember coverage so One of my neighbors has a little assume acting. That's about a foot tall, deep red, real rich, and then she's got a couple others around it. Um, better, you know, kind of yellow was not real interesting. Do they come in different colors, or is it soil or can't do anything to make to Max? More dramatic? Not really. They do come in a variety of colors in the wild. In other words, some I was just noticing this driving in this morning. There's one at the end of my street that is just the most. Deep rich burgundy. Any and it gets that beautiful color every year, So it's probably a genetic thing. It's just It's also related to the weather. Probably, but you don't wanna really fertilizing. They're natives. They don't need it. Probably don't want it. Um, you could play around with that and maybe put you know some extra fertilizer on it, but I just don't think it's necessary. "Um, the last third party effort I worked on was the Strayhorn campaign. And I just wanna tell you what they make Dave, if you think the current system At the polls, the elections in machines the ballots, the mail in ballots, except if you think that's rigged. One thing that's even more Rick than that is how the two party system, Republicans and Democrats have worked tirelessly to make sure that third parties will only end up with single digits. Now what we've done is we've proven that we're actually big enough. Where we need to get busy is in the primary elections. That's when we can fire these rhino Republicans like Mitt Romney's like and Utah. They need to primary him out, and that way they can vote for hopefully a better Republican in general, But I got to say they love him up there. Richard. He's not going anywhere. They love him. That's the guy that's the guy. It is. 9 40. Go ahead. What we could say I was just gonna agree with you. Yeah, that is that, no matter what. He's their guy. "The trial of the century launched the kardashian media empire. Even the way that we've been. I think is really interesting. Because i find kris jenner to be repugnant person but watching some ah blair play her and for her to be the first to say you know. He did this and i want to help. Put him away while her ex husband in her arguing and to have that sort of perspective about kris jenner is interesting. You know it's all very fascinating and you know the they. They introduced the kids you know. And you know there's a whole sequence where oj's threatening to blow his brains out in you know you realize he's in kim kardashian bedroom and you know like the way that they whether it's true or not Some of the stuff that they do is sensational. And i think most of it's true. Because i i went online and started watching these marcia clark interviews and stuff where she's like. Yeah basically this is true. "And I'm here Subbing for Tom for the last year. And I have Robert Jennings here today. As you may know, Suz calling about something that's interesting that he is very knowledgeable about. So we're going to go to her. But if you want to join in collar text 51283605 90 Let's go to South Boston. Hey, Sue. Thanks for calling. Good morning. I have never had luck with passion, Flowers, and I've put him straight later. I've taken a clipping. Put it straight in the soil. They've died. I've put him in water and had them route and then I put it in the soil and they've died. And so that's where I am in the process. So when you were Talking about the passionflower. I thought I got one about three weeks ago from a friend and it's in the jar in the window, and it's rooting. How can I successfully planted and where should I plant it in my yard so that it will survive? Well, regarding the first thing that you're mentioning it is awfully hard for whatever reason to do a cutting. Have a neighbor that wanted the the incense variety from me. And Ah, tried, like five or six different times. Sitting in a pod and whether draught outdoors too much water. I'm not really sure, but yes, it's it's pretty hard to get them going from a cutting. But volunteers work a lot better once you haven't established plan and dig down and get some dirt. But I do want to warn you about the passion Flower vine. It's very invasive. Extremely invasive. I mean, it will just keep going and going and going. It'll go into your neighbor's yard. It will go all the way up until it stops up against a driveway or sidewalk. Which passion fire. Would you say that those the most invasive one or there is the purple? Put Native Purple one? Yes, and even the straight hair, straight hair, purple. Fashion buying. So keep that in mind if you have a yard that's enclosed with was cement or have a driveway that's bordered by the side, Walker or what have you You have semen all the way around that will work. Well, I have a corner in the back yard where there's a fence and with Cheryl's help Through the years, I planted apple trees and fig trees and I've got pomegranates and I make birdhouses. So I have a three bird houses in this corner and back where you can see the fans sounds pretty. The only place it's really pretty the only place in the back yard where you can actually see the fans. And I thought it's let's see. It would be on the North side North side north corner, and I'd like to put it back in there because it gets sun but not all day. So what do you think about that location if I can, because I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong Whether it's it's probably even better because of these things. Just the growth so fast. I mean, I have some that air 40 50 60 FT. Long. Okay. And how they growing up on trellises, would you so soon? The one that I have routing right now is a nice route on it. Can you tell me how should I know? How should I transplanted? Tried successfully grow it like Is there any You're just saying it's hit or miss. There's nothing that you have found. Well, let me let me comment on this just from a grower's perspective or a former grower. I did not realize at first that plants rooted in water. Those plants are much more delicate than if they had been started in like a seat, parting type of mix and So that's probably part of why you're having a problem. Those seeds of those roots are very, very Delicate and so what I would personally do is very gently put that into small like a forage pot or maybe a court something a little bit bigger court. With a loose potting mix. And try to grow that. See if you can gently route that out in a medium That's a little bit more, you know, not quite put it out in the yard because I don't think that's gonna work. Throw it up. And then maybe maybe if you can keep it alive and that then you could put it out in the spring. I position it. Yes, but just kind of transition And because of those low roots air, really? Sensitive if you will, Okay. And I mean that it doesn't work. Would you perchance one? Well, that was going to be my next comment. You know, why not Just buy one that's already rooted out and you'll have, you know, bound to have good luck with that. Where do you get yours? Robert of McIntyre's in Hill Country Nursery Garden. Yeah, and you get off. Sometimes they're they're even a box stores or HPV. I've seen the Crimson's at HPD and have you Well, Barton Springs is convenient for you on Big Caves Road. You want to try that? Of course, you can always go the natural gardener. But you have to just run down Teo Barton Springs nursery, and I've heard good things about Shell Creek Nursery, too. A CZ faras, they're stopped goes. I mean, they're not paying me to say this, And neither is Barton Springs are you know anybody else we've mentioned right now. But yeah, but I know you know Conrad at Barton Springs. He he's gonna have a good selection of stuff like that. Okay. Thank you so much. You're welcome. Thanks for coming to Mumbai. Somebody texted and says, How is Tom Spencer doing? He is Doing pretty well. From what I read. I get email notifications from his. His sister maintains a website for him, and he's definitely says his sense of humor is Totally intact and that people.
