"I'm bill radke. Thanks for joining us today. We have as I said Seattle Times Investigations Editor Jonathan Martin q thirteen correspondent Simone del Rosario, the strangers editor chase. and. All of us can now put together our weekend review co REC soccer team. Need to get a few more people because the governor has loosened some Kobe restrictions. Including restrictions on Youth Sports and wedding receptions and movie theaters and restaurants can now increase their table seatings. We found out restaurants not totally abiding by this and not really enforcing it. So we don't think there's been much loss in Cova transmission reduction they were ignoring any way. So let them go ahead even though the CDC says adults who tested positive for covert were twice as likely to have dined at a restaurant within the past two weeks as people who tested negative your reaction to the loosening up of a Seattle playground also are open starting this week any reaction Well I'm actually parked outside of a playground I sue the people are very happy. That tear kids are out playing around in this area so Are they distanced. Masks I see. On the parents yeah, I, don't want to you know. But no I mean I it's it's interesting to see kids playing a playground and then think, Oh yeah, that wasn't normal You know was the governor's timing a little advantageous maybe some of the reasoning behind it like listening to him say, well, restaurants weren't abiding by at anyway. And we don't see an impact. So let's let him do it I. Think a lot of people would have liked to seen some of these changes earlier but at the same time, it's it's hard to argue with how successful the Seattle area has been. When it comes to Cova transmission. We saw the report this week that ranked it the best out of the biggest thirty cities across the United States saying that we had the lowest number of cases, and that's something that when we think about being the epicenter at the very..

"What what you're seeing is the visible visible homelessness is really increased, but they're in the pandemic and now. As A. In into the fall now. Denny Park Um which the city just spent about four or five million dollars improving and beautifying gorgeous park down in South Lake Union his is a large Ten ten community now. I think that that is creating elevating existing tensions with neighborhoods and businesses that are concerned about. Unsanctioned camping and and sort of what the city's plan is to deal with ten communities that are now. Growing and very visible. And we know that. House listen homelessness. It's not it's not just Seattle's problem. It's also it's a regional problem. It's also obviously there's a state dynamic involved and it's it's a federal problem to we need a good relationship with the federal government so that we can solve this as well and when we look at all of those levels of government, we see it there is a lot of antagonism there whether it's just Seattle or Seattle and the federal government and so. then. We come back to you know whose responsibility is it to to solve this problem? I think it's interesting when we looked at that Seattle writes Seattle, Human Rights Commission report. They said that they found that it was ultimately the mayor's responsibility to solve this problem that they felt that you know we elected her and we elect the city council to solve these problems and Bay Bay Bayside on the fact that because she had not I'm. Done. Enough that they felt that that was enough for removal and so it's just it's reflective of of this really tense. I don't think we're not going to iron out these divisions between the Mayor's office most city council by the next election and submit in the meantime we have this problem that's ongoing. But John one point are going to chase point, but the regional regional approach is a really good one the. Durkin and Dow cosseting kind executive. Really, sort of linked arms a couple years ago, frank set up a regional homelessness authority that was basically pooling all the city and county and the federal and some of the philanthropy money into a big pot and have it much more coordinated That's still that organization regional entities still work in progress but Dow Constantine had proposed a meanwhile. Kodak proposed. A. Tax Increase that was basically housing plan sales tax that was would be bonded against and with both to create. A lot of housing was we'll be a wad of money and the city's regional cities have now opted out of that opted to take that tax Texan for themselves which then. Well Auburn can't yeah yeah. And that is really diminished the ability to have a comprehensive countywide housing plan because it's you know he's using bonded Tax Tax Authority. So interesting that you know the the regional approach that has been kind of celebrated as as kind of falling apart at the micro level is cities really opt out of this for their own reasons. Let's pause again. This is the weekend review on Koa. I can see Simone del Rosario from q thirteen..

"I it's so much. This is unknown. Seer of the future but I. I. Remember from kindergarten was taking naps and cutting circles squares, and I'm not and I don't want to. To be dismissive of people's education concerns, I don't know how. We don't know how long people will be out of school. We don't know how long this pandemic is GonNa ease over what period of time. But when you said that word resilient. My kids they they are. They'll they'll you know ride bikes with friends or? Play badminton with masks on and off the they're. They're learning different stuff and I'm not yet personally convinced that my kids are going to be. Just. Developmentally delayed by by this pandemic I just. I don't know are do we amid the chaos of a post earthquake is one thing but. Is that is that the consensus that kids are going to learn are going to miss that much from this disruption that almost all of us are having to face at the same time. I your your point about basically your kids doing social emotional learning. In A. Structured Way It's true and there's a lot of brilliant kids who are home schooled and weren't on their own. But that social emotional learning of your your peers is a really critical part of school. It's really sort of learning to. Rules learning to interact with your peers learning to you know learning to take instruction from from a teacher somebody's other than your parent. So for young kids you know there is an ability to. To adapt to be resilient, but I think as a as a broad scale society, we when we we have urgency to to have the best quality instruction and the research tells us when don't have that instruction, there are all of these. In some cases lifelong cost to that. I don't think we can sort of shy away from the the cost of. of remote learning that is clearly the data showing P..

"Recall effort was interesting because I think a lot of people were just uncomfortable with the idea of a recall I think in this sort of politically. Toxic time and having just gone through a failed impeachment effort with the president. I think that a lot of people were just resistant to the idea of a recall, but that shouldn't be misconstrued as people being. A happy with the mayor's leadership I think that if she's going to run for reelection again, she's going to have to really tangle with these these resignation calls and not just keep a calling them distractions I think that's really insulting to the people who have had brought forward. Really. Smart Criticisms to the mayor's office. On a different topic I asked Mayor Dirk about the sale, of bartell drugs bartell. Family owned here for one hundred, thirty years this week they sold themselves to Pennsylvania right? You know it is a tough tough time for brick and mortar businesses. And it was before the pandemic we saw the tech, we saw the economy shifting rapidly online. The pandemic is only increased that more and more people are buying from Amazon and other places and fewer people are going to their local stores, and this shows us that you know Seattle is no exception to that rule. Chase you've only lived here five of those one, hundred, thirty years. So your reaction to the loss of a local institution was irons I'm sorry I didn't have a huge reaction i. know that's bad. I know it's bad. I've heard from people who grew up understand that bartelldrugs this like remarkable fantastic thing I guess. In my five years since I've been here it it I have confused it for a righted but I don't mean to say that I am not concerned about this acquisition or that I don't think that this is a loss but I would like to know what was so special about our towel. It would be I would be happy to hear that. I mean it's you know as a kind of one of those like conic owned businesses. But you know what I liked about bartels was it featured local. Local local brands. Local businesses had like you know had like the SASQUATCH, plush doll and Washington specific. KNICKKNACKS and such. Also, also, who doesn't who doesn't hate national chains really of course. When I when I moved here that was my pharmacy of choice. I think there is a difference walking into a bartels at least the ones that I've been going into their very clean. The people very helpful. I love the layout it feels different than walking into a ride with. Picture them with really scuffed up floors and it just feels different I. There's a lot of pride in any kind of home town home grown business and I know that they don't have any plans right now to take off the store signs or anything like that will be different remains to be seen. But right now that family business has really made a really great name off around here. By the way in case you're wondering, is it bartell or bartels? It's really a coke. Can you know? Thing, a pop and Soda Pop I'm a Bartell but. You could you can spend the rest of your..
Rite Aid buys 130-year-old Seattle-based Bartell Drugs chain for $95 million
"Bad Week for Seattle icons poor went out for bartell man Seattle based drug store announced earlier this week, it was purchased by rite aid bartels around of course, since eighteen ninety back to the Yukon gold rush days, canoe. This is one of the oldest companies in Washington, and this is the stuff that hits me hard. It's the kind of change that I really don't like and I'm not even a native. Are you sad about this? I. Am I mean I think it's amazing that family could keep keep any business together from eighteen, ninety, two, twenty, twenty that's a pretty good run. I think people just don't like the the decline of local miss. In some of our institutions bartels always had a very distinct personality they used to. You know there was a a favorite triangle building down at West Lake that had a Great Soda Fountain in a restaurant upstairs and You know people like going bartels fruit. Christmas candy as well as medicines I went looked at some old bartels ads they. Attempted to be good citizens during previous crises, they were selling ways to sterilize your masks during the nineteen, eighteen endemic and things like that. So you know people feel sorta bonded with that and rite aid is faceless chain. So I was surprised because I commented twitter when I heard about it and I was amazed the response people are really not happy about it. Sean Bar Taylor. Now you're gonNA miss it. Yeah. I'm GONNA MISS IT A lot. It's a I think a really a kind of just a sign of. The Times in a lot of ways I mean when I Was a freshman at the University of Washington once upon a time. I really remember orienting myself quite a bit using that that sign that they had out on the corner of forty fifth in the APP. You know the time that lets you know the temperature and I think you know the the the economic climate right now I think was really indicated by you know a small business closure like that which was really really unfortunate. It's a difficult time and these are reminders that. You know those local chains they're not a sustainable and bartell even said at themselves this pandemic made it really difficult for us. And featured local products right like Almond Roca and applets in cutlets which I think are awful but. That's okay. Just tweeted me. Probably. The most controversial thing that's been said on this podcast so far. We cover up to this point within the fly between Kobe between trump i. really think this is going to be the thing that's going to land you in hot water on on social networking I'm GonNa get mail. And the other thing that's leaving again, a heartbreak, the elephant car wash is going to close that awesome sign. It's probably going to go live at Mohi, that big pink elephant giving itself a bath with its trunk. Is. It sad that we have to go to see this pink Elephant Museum, Canoe. Yeah, it will be if if if they can fit it in the door, right You know, I mean Mohi, has become the place that saves are signs. You know whether it's the rainier beer signed or the old tow truck or or whatever. You were probably due to have some sort of A. Part that part near Mohi turned into some kind of outdoor signed? My Gosh. It's going to be weary on czar neon park. It would be cool. You. Know I drive by Before the pandemic I was driving by the pink elephants signed almost. Almost every day and I use the car wash. It was really convenient working down near Seattle Center. But even it was so hard to get to I. Mean I think they're factors is on a weird piece of property with all the construction down there. It's hard to figure out how to get in there because it's one way Stinson things are blocked off. I think I, felt like I. Think I wrote a piece like several years ago. This pig elephant is doomed because of all development here. So. I've been sort of surprises lasted as long But I hate to see it go everybody loves that thing you you from Seattle? That's how you give people directions. You know you say you go down Denney Then when you get to that pink elephant sign, you turn less you know. Right and we need landmarks like that to help us get around especially since the cities looking so homogenized legally. Well. Yeah, you can't really say we'll drive down to that Amazon Tower. One of ten Amazon Towers looked identical and you'll think you're in bellevue but you know. Yeah. Doesn't work as well. Sean, what do you think? Well, I think it's it's a you know it's fitting. We were talking earlier about sort of the increasingly wayward direction of the Republican Party the GOP whose symbol is the elephant, and now we ask the actual physical displacement perhaps the best known elephant in. In the city of Seattle. So bad bad year for the Republicans we'll see how a number turns out if we can turn this thing around for elephants everywhere. Here.

Barred Owls Invade the Sierra Nevadas
"Barred owl has a very distinctive call. That's the one that goes who cooks for you. Connor would is a conservation biologist and apply to colleges at the University of Wisconsin Wisconsin Madison. Who happens to do a pretty great barred owl impression himself. Who barred owls are native to the eastern US but in the last century? They've crossed the great great plains flooded into Canada and taking up roost in the Pacific northwest. Where they're a major threat to northern spotted. Owls barred owls are bigger and more aggressive than SPA. Ah Dollars and so far have been able to. Basically drive spotted owls out of their preferred nesting areas and also. Because they're more flexible than what they eat. There can be lots more bartels on landscape in now they're invading. The Sierra Nevada mountains further south the native range of the California spotted owl and the big question. Question was what is the size of the population there. And how fast is it growing to answer. That wouldn't team deployed audio recorders. Roughly a thousand locations uh-huh throughout twenty three hundred square miles of the northern Sierra Nevada. And they listened for two years. Collecting the faint calls of spotted. Owls barred owls house to in total. They gathered two hundred thousand hours worth of audio. Pretty daunting seeing. It all accumulate a- and knowing we had to make something intelligible out of algorithms that comb the audio for our call's helped make sense of it all and through models. The researchers were able to estimate estimate who was living in those forests barbells or spotted owls in approximately how many of them there were the key. Finding is that barred. Owls occupied about eight percent of the the northern. Sierra Nevada landscape and twenty seventeen but that jumps to twenty one percent in two thousand eighteen. So that's a two point six fold increase in just one year ear and on one hand. That's really worrying because it suggests that that bartell population has begun to grow really rapidly and thus pose direct immediate threat the California's byd l.. But the other hand. It's really exciting. Because this means we've caught the problem early and actually have a chance to do something about it. Most biological logical invasions really aren't fully identified until it's too late. The results are in the Journal. Condor ornithological applications would and his team advised that it might be necessary. Sorry to take lethal action. Remove the barred owls before they wipe out California spotted. Owls assuming that is we. Give about two spotted. Owls continued survival.
Eye Tracking Tech Evaluating TV Commercials on Different Screens
"And hold on tie as I beam, you'll is all the way disant Louis in Missouri. So we can speak with Mike bottles senior research director at Toby pro inside. So massive warm. Welcome to the show. Mike, can you tell the listeners about who you are? And what you do. Absolutely. My name is Mike Bartell's. I am the director of marketing research and user experience. Toby pro North America fantastic enough regular listeners. Of course, I spoke to Joseph Gopal on episode six nine five of this podcast last year. So is anything in this happened in the last three months that listens Ma of missed since we last night with Joseph? Yes, absolutely. I think I think you Joseph had talked about the launch of Toby pro sprint. There's always always knew fun technologies and and things going on here at Toby. I would say in the last three months a couple of areas of focus that that have been pretty exciting have been a virtual reality. I tracking that's something that's really taking off being able to track. Exactly where people are. Looking inside virtual environment with with the eye tracker built directly into the VR headset. It's really changed. A lot of the way that we're able to do research into, you know, shopper behavior in virtual stores, and how consumers navigates a hotel lobby or or another type of virtual environment. And and capturing exactly where they're looking during that process. So that's one thing that's been pretty exciting. We've also been digging into a new a new area of research for us, which is a professional performance research. I tracking has traditionally been used quite a bit in, you know, academic research user, experience consumer behavior. But now, we're using quite a bit more intesting how people operate machinery or perform professional tasks at work really understanding. You know, what is the visual process that worker is going through as they're doing their job on on a day to day basis, which is important for you know, for training and safety and all sorts of different reasons. So those have been kind of two of the main areas of focus in the last few months for us fantastic as incredibly saw in technology, and one of the main reasons on you buy Kone tonight was after reading the gossip Donna newst, a new study that can help identify. What makes an effective broadcast TV commercial in a world full of mobile devices, and so many other distractions succumbed you expand on exactly what you found in the stood is there was pretty fascinating in sauce from the report wasn't. Yes, -olutely. So there was quite a bit in there. You know, we ended up looking at around one hundred and fifty people and three thousand different commercials, and we really focused on was you know, where are people looking what's holding attention? What is? Associated with people tuning out. And there were a number of interesting findings about those the placement of the commercial that is most effective and the content of the commercial and kind of what works and drawn people in what tends to be associated with people kind of zoning out and going back to their smartphones. Some of the things we found we found that commercials placed earlier in the commercial break are most likely to hold attention impaired with those later in the commercial break, but sort of counter-intuitively also found that the commercial breaks later in a program tenants do a better job of holding attention than those earlier in the program. So, you know, as the person is kind of sitting there watching the show the longer, they're they're they're watching the the more. They tend to focus their attention on those commercials that are airing. We also found some. Things gender differences men tend to look at the screen during commercials longer than women. There was a slight difference generational looking at people under under the age of thirty five. They spent about five percent less time with their eyes on the screen during the commercials, which actually this. This one was interesting to me because we'd been expecting there to be a larger difference. You know, the the conventional wisdom today is that millennials in younger they have there is buried in their smartphone all the time, and they're not focusing as much on the screen. This research showed that that's actually not the

If you're not, there's only about nine issues left in the series total. Yeah, it's trying to end in twenty nineteen and it'll be done. So. So I just put my highest recommendations behind it. If your income store this week and you're using the cop, iron heart pre-ordered out maitre you pick up a new world by Alice Kat and trad more. That is trying to be one of my series at a year when you were talking about beautiful art. Trad is just one at a top. The woman who's doing the coloring is one essay sister. I'm not sure what their relationship is. Our last name is more as well. She's just incredible. This is our first come book ever and she did the first issue yet, and I'm like, no, like I know she's a painter, whatever, and artists, obviously. But this first comic book and the coloring which is like on a level of, you know, anyone that I've ever seen doing it have been doing it and tried is just one of the best artists out. Alice is on our, you know, he's a friend of the show. He was on here for generation gone. One of my favorite books last year and a new world is shaping up to be one of my favorites. This year it a black woman as the lead who. Falls in love. She's a police officer in the future, and she falls in love with criminal. She's chasing. And that's the story that kicks off in the first issue. Second issue drops August twenty. Ninth. So make sure you check that out. Like I said, comets cop does a hashtag. Thank you. Everyone out there for using it cop, iron heart. Any other books, please tell us about them. I've been seeing all the Butch recommending. I've been gonna, check them out. Thank once again for that digital counts too. Don't let it get. Don't get it twisted. If your digital reader you can. You can preorder there too. They they're reading, although they won't release their empirical data for digital purchases. They're monitoring that trust me if there's anything I will bet on in my life, I will bet snow those numbers and they are a major factor as to whether a book lives or dies. So if you're saying good recovery, like my tablet, it I do that you do that preorder. You got gotta do it, nobody, but yourself preorder go to comics allergy or anywhere where you buy comics digitally and pre-order there and it'll go.

"A whole heartedly authentically recommend both these podcasts and you can find both podcast i tunes okay back to the show i want to talk about some of your more recent work on job crafting and all these things in kind of like non traditional i'm trying to get the best word to describe not traditional so one like virtual work a lot of people that you nuts becoming big now a lot of entrepreneurs or you can work from home right so what is the impact of virtual work on john crafting says this is a great question so i have data so this is a paper that i need to add more data to because what we have at this point is a really interesting pattern that we've presented at conferences and so on but in data than i collected with caroline bartell and bhatia as invalid we look at people who people's job crafting as a function of sort of the structural variable of actually to structural variables wine are you a manager or are you a non manager as a way of thinking about the kinds of power and control that people might have over their ability right to shape their jobs in ways that they might want and then we also look at do you work virtually or not right so in organizations where there's more of a range than ever i would think in how much virtual work is being deployed where people are either working from home or from drop in centers or what have you what we find is that managers craft just as much whether they were are working primarily onsite or offsite right that being more or less virtual doesn't really make a difference in how much managers or crafting which might say something about how the power or the autonomy that you have to craft matters sort of quite a bit what we find though is that for employees who are non managerial the more virtual they are the more they craft they look more like managers when they are engaging in more virtual work and the people who craft the least are the non managerial employees who were on site in the organization who don't do virtual work and so it's an interesting sort of twist on understanding how structural variable.
