"There was a basketball player at New Mexico state who had been at a party and he stomped out some dude from the university of New Mexico, like after their big football game. So is due, goes to Mexico state. I don't know how far Las Cruces and Albuquerque are, right? But he's adding New Mexico state. He meets this girl. And she like, yo, come on campus. We can get down, right? And he like, cool, but he don't realize that this girl is actually Friends with the dude that he stomped out. And the dude that he stomped out was like, yeah, yeah, get him to come to campus. So he gets there to see the girl, they wind up hitting buddy with a baseball bat, right? Taking about shooting at him and I mean, I don't know if I'm giving credit for the wrong things. The dude I got hit with the baseball bat is not the dude who died. He's the one that got his strap shot back. And left him through, let's do it on the ground. It's self defense. Once you heal up, you come to my training camp, dog. You cool under pressure. I mean, that's why the coaches was a try to let them question my man. Yeah. I hold your peace, right? I love none of y'all that much. Yeah. Right? I will get you in touch with the attorney in town who does his pro Bono work for players. There was like chasing trying to catch up to the team bus all tight stuff. It was wild. I didn't see that part of it. I just saw the first part, which was just the whole circumstance around to shoot.

"Who plays baseball enough to need to have a bat at the house? You should not be able to buy a baseball bat in the store. You should have to order that from a sports hole sailor who's your require you to give me some documentation of what baseball team you were on because if you are not playing baseball with the baseball thing, the only other thing you're doing is you are the perpetrator of a crime. People are like, I got a self defense. That may go. That is an offensive weapon. Yeah, I do think there's some red flags that go off of anybody. If somebody leave Walmart with a baseball bat, ready to tell you. Make sure you are going to a diamond somewhere. I got to show ID to buy sinus headache medicine. And they just lay anybody walk out of here with a baseball bat. I was driving through Durham one time on Holloway street in the Holloway street, apparently is getting a little gentrified, but this is like 15 years ago. It wasn't no kind of gentrified because it was a Sunday afternoon, hardly anybody was out, and I saw some dude in a baseball Jersey. It's a big old shorts, and he had a baseball bat over his shoulder, and I turned my car around and I said, I didn't need to be anywhere near whatever the hell was going on down there. Did I tell you about what I was in Detroit? A lot of year ago. So I'm in Detroit, my cousin moved out there for a job, and he loves it out there. It's cool. I went to visit him. Around, I stopped there on my way to the Hall of Fame. And he was going out to dinner. He don't live downtown. He lived out in the suburbs, so we were going downtown for dinner. It's broad daylight. It's like summertime, it's like, I don't know, like 5, 6 o'clock, it's still bright. We just driving. There's a man standing on the corner with jeans on a tactical vest with no shirt underneath. Holding a 9, just standing on the corner, holding a 9 millimeter in his hand, just like holding it, not pointing at nobody, just holding it at his side. With a tactical vest, no shirt on underneath, and we driving by, people walking by. And I don't think what was so the most, I've been some places I've seen some things. I'm not like made too uncomfortable, but what made me gave me pause was initially seeing him was like, oh, that's wild. That's weird. But how nobody around him was uncomfortable. Like the people had to bust out like, man, he just there every week we all driving by,

"Two best, I guess you could put Tyree kill up there, but with them with them, guys do to a defense and what they do for a quarterback. Yeah. Well, Jefferson is even more helpful for a guy like her cousins because Jefferson is always open. Three guys on his back. Still open, right? Like Diggs is gonna get open. Jefferson is open. Yeah, just put it over there. Right over there in his vicinity. He gonna go get it and make everybody look bad. And then Gritty and the end zone and have you flying on a plane topless. We just changed on it because he's that good. Yes. I tell you, boy, I was wondering any LSU fans listening to this. Do y'all ever wish they joined Jefferson could play quarterback? Like, do you wish that Jordan had been a receiver and Justin had been a quarterback? Do you remember George Jefferson's LA? Oh, okay, I got confused, not bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what you're talking about. Oh boy, I don't know of a fan base that got more great with anybody than LSU fans that would enjoy Jefferson. And honestly, they have the gripe with him because he was better than Jared Lee, so he wound up being out there in the NASA championship game when they were sorry. Like they tried not to, but the other guy was just too sorry, but I will just never forget. Jordan Jefferson wanted to hop that gate at that apartment complex and the honey badger's life was never the same again. This is the opposite of the whole boy Hall of Fame. Yeah. I wrote a piece on him a couple years ago, not on Jordan, but on tyron Matthew. And the career that he had from that point was pretty incredible. And the story behind all that stuff. I don't know, is it weird a different place though? That's all like society has changed because tyron Matthew, the way that we talked about him or he was talking about or treated back then based on what was going on and his life is very different. I honestly think that they use that character stuff as like a mask for the actual reason why nobody really wanted him because nobody knew what to do with them. Yeah. Which, yeah, and he's a New Orleans, not being a player he once was, but that happens to everybody. Now see, I think somebody would have figured out what to do with him. But I know a big part of it was what people were telling me at the time. Like what did it mean at LSU? Was they getting ready to do the Heisman campaign? They're like, all right, but dog, we need you to get this thing taken care of. And he just couldn't, and it just reached a point for them where they just looking around like, I may take a lot of LSU to jettison talent. You know what I'm saying? What's you start missing a missing assignments when you knew the due date?

"They look a lot different walking around than they're more hard charging come patriots. Frank O'Hara is still out here, getting things done, living light. I hear Jim Brown, sprinkle running out of bounds. Yes, yes, I would have run out of bounds every play, myself. If it was an option, yeah. That one yard is one extra yard, ain't gonna be worth it. All right, try to prove to y'all how tough I am. Look here, I ain't about to wham. I ain't about no power. I ain't about no belly. I ain't about no dive. I'm a run over here toward the side. Throw that thing to me and let me figure out this angle that I need to get at. I mean, that's also different too, is like, that's the biggest argument for they don't make them like they used to. It's like, I feel like all running backs were around for a long time. And good for a long time. It looks like good running back, you know? Well, yeah, just the ones you remember, yeah. Yeah, and I guess maybe that's it, but it doesn't feel like, I don't know, like Todd Gurley's here for a hot second. I mean, I guess there were some running backs like shady. He played for a while. Yeah. But he was never like, there was always, he was always kind of part of something. It was never like, hey, just bang it up in there. Derek Henry's like the only one that feels like. They just all treated as being so disposable, right? Yeah. Like the idea that it's a question of, hey, you think we should resign a saquon Barkley? Like, wait, we gotta talk about this? Yeah. That's crazy, but yeah, they shouldn't. But that's the thing.

"It's so wild because with the Deion stuff, you know, dean embarrassing has been the same draft. And it will be 34 years in April since that draft. I wish these kids could have grown up with a bear. You said, just the beer notion and idea. It did matter how many gays his tea would lost or whatever it is. You just ate never seen nothing like that before. My first number was 20 when I first started playing football. I really love berries. Yeah. I couldn't do nothing like berry, but I didn't know that at the time. And you know, coach Marvin was a drill sergeant. He was like, hey, coach, but he was like an actual drill sergeant where his fatigue to practice. You know what coach Marvin wasn't here for? His mom was not here for no 8 year old, trying to cut everything back. Coach Marvin was like, you better get downhill. It took me a couple years to earn the ability to do whatever I wanted. The every year, Barry said, is what lead the league and lost yardage on the runs and a did not matter. He was also and I think this department Sanders dad gets for guidance. He was toting that thing 300, three folded, three 50. He was getting them carries, which is why he retired. I'm good. But you know what though? He still retired after 11 years. Yeah. He and, you know, always, I wonder, like, who's doing who's doing how after they retire? You can see different guys that you could tell different people are indifferent physical states as it goes. The one thing I do always know, especially when it comes to the running back, every single one of them that used to get help for going out of bounds. They look a lot different walking around than they're more hard charging come patriots. Frank O'Hara is still out here, getting things done, living light. "And that same kind of friction exists in this where it's like Joe Biden is not going to, we're not going to be talking about him undercutting the rail unions. Nearly as much as getting Britney home, whereas where should his motivation lie because there is more good press and more capital to be earned by dedicating yourself to something like that, then there is to be earned. It doesn't feel like he's taking as much of a hit as I think he probably deserves considering the way that he presents himself for undercutting the rail unions. But anyway, this is a bit off track, but in tie back into sports, like you see that challenge all the time and it's baseball. Baseball wants to stick to these analytics rules because it gives you or analytic style because it gives you a better chance to win, but it's clearly made the game less enjoyable. For football at least, it seems like the game is so complex that there are a bunch of different ways to do it and it all gets interesting and they've also changed. They've been willing to change the roles to force us away from that 90s style football that we used to use to watch. It's 5 yards in the cloud of dust. Man, I love y'alls in a cloud of dust. Like I say, they turned what was a great drama into a big budget action movie, right? That's kind of what the groove was and see what football is interesting to me the analytic space actually made it better. And the reason is all the analytics stuff is taken these big old manly men who talk so much about courage and guts and everything else. And now telling them to actually use them on fourth down every now and then, right? Like you don't have to put so much guys. I think with football where the analytics get it wrong on partially on the entertainment, but also the function is the numbers ain't really explaining the story on running the ball, right? You're getting your face run through over and even if it's 3.33 yards every three downs and you just keep moving the chains, man. You might get more yards on that other thing, but it ain't gonna be with this thing is here, right? There's gonna be a value in that that I think ultimately winds up not being captured, but I was thinking about it in terms of just the entertainment value of football. You know, and the precision passing attack, which by the way, is really hard to do, like we're learning that the reason that this was not the advance from the very beginning is it's very hard to find people who can actually pull this off. But if you go watch highlight films of the old school great running backs, there are no amazing runs that look like those amazing runs. Like everything is so efficient and like straight ahead, one couldn't go all of this stuff. You go look at them Barry Sanders clips. There's nobody that runs anything like Barry Sanders because nobody is like allowed to run anything like Barry Sanders. Like, to me right now, there's one Hall of Fame running back in the league. And also on top of it, which I guess is generally the problem or one of the challenges of being a president or even a smaller scale is CEO or even a parent is the problems that you solve in ain't problems that you created. And I know that Joe couldn't say this or didn't want to, but I wouldn't know how I would feel. It's like, I ain't do this. But I just don't find it enjoyable and I happen for quite some time so I hop on to every now and then and then like I'll find out about stuff later but I don't be too stressed out about it like sometimes Mina shoot me something and I'm like, oh yeah, that's important. Let me get on there and check it out but I don't know it just hanging. It ain't fun to feel like work. Good on that. I work enough. One day game theory is gonna go away and when it does I'm off the tweets off the gram. I'm all of it. I'm a go back to things back to the way they were. I might go buy myself a 40 ounce of 45 just to celebrate the time. So all I'm saying now. We got some NFL to talk about here. But first, as Maeve, you know, possible Friday, we recorded on Thursday, otherwise how else could you get it in the morning on Friday, you know? But just before we got on, we got word that Brittany grinner was all the plane heading back to the United States of America. Whoo. I don't know what like deep thing there is for us to say about this necessarily, right? She was in jail for what 9 months over, not even some actual weed, but the remnants of something in a vape cartridge or something like that. And she is on the way back. It is incredible, great news. I have so fearful Dominique that we will simply trivialize it. Yeah, I mean. I'm with you. I don't know what there is to say. It is big news, but there's nothing to talk about as just a celebration that she gets out. I mean, what are we supposed to break down to trade? Well, know what to do with it. The trade breakdown is interesting. If we did want to say this, I would have to say, it seems as though Putin extracted a great deal of surplus in this trade. You give us an args dealer. And part of why I don't expect in many places for people to try to argue with me is if we be in Frank, there's a reason why most people don't try to beat you in a running race. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like, you covered in with that faux tray. They know this. This is not the game to play. And so when I show up places and people of what I find to be a bit argumentative, I'm not accustomed to it because people don't really be trying to argue with me. That doesn't really happen. But the problem is, when do people do try to argue with me is typically people that probably shouldn't try to win an argument with me. But you can't just be knocking the hell out of people. You know what I'm saying? It doesn't play. Unless people really despise the person. So I was just like, oh, this is a wee bit argumentative, right? Yeah, all DMZ. "Up two of them, Dan, for hour one. The rare two poll question hour one. Let's see. Tonight's game is more important for the browns or the Steelers. Right now you got 55% saying the browns. And then who do you want? Who would you rather buy the sons and the sons of mercury, a billionaire businessman or a group of players right now, 57 percent say a group of players? I think it's more of a must win for the browns because they're at home and you're trying to just buy time until deshaun Watson comes back where you get to that point where you're maybe a couple of games over 500. But you do have star power on that team. You got two good running backs. You got guys who can get after the passer. You got weapons there. The Steelers, that's trickier because it's just not a good offense. I think they have weapons there. It just comes down to is Mitchell trubisky going, how long is he the guy? Because when you make that decision, it feels like you're not looking back. But I would want to wait until at least the biweek for Kenny Pickett. Let me just see, is Mitchell trubisky the problem? Are they too conservative? Are they attempting passes downfield? Those are the things that I'd be curious about as we move forward there. First, 6 seasons, 4300 rushing yards, at least 189 receptions and averaging 5 yards per carry. So, Jamal Charles did it. Aaron Jones of the packers is second on that list. But that's it. Barry Sanders is there. But he averaged just under 5 yards per carry. So Aaron Jones and Jamaal Charles averaged over 5 yards per carry through the first 6 seasons of their career. Barry Sanders averaged just under 5, so did Greg Pruitt do it Pruitt and priest Holmes. He played for two teams over those 6 years. So Aaron Jones is in some pretty rarefied air there. 8 7 7 three DP show email address DP Adam

"Kind of light years ahead of where we were in the nineties. Gus Frerotte, former NFL quarterback, joining me on CBS Sports Radio Augusta. I'm always curious someone with your career path. I think seven different teams that you played for. Do you have a particular juncture of your career that you look at most fondly among all the stops? Well, I think I love them all. And you know, I enjoyed every stop. Obviously, it took my family everywhere we went, and I mean, it was just it was. I was just lucky to be there for 15 years, you know, and play for all the teams. I did, but Every stop. I can tell you a great story that I had, um of teammates, a family of coaches. Um, but, you know, being drafted in Washington and being there As long as I did. I think that was my favorite. Stop. The first go around because D C is just an amazing place. And you know, I love playing for the Washington football team. What was it like playing with Barry Sanders? I don't know. Let him get too. Oh, he was gone by 1990 God, that's oh, my God. That's why I went. That's one of the reasons I chose. Detroit was to go play with Barry and B. Scott Mitchell and hand it off and just watch him run the ball. And then you know, right before training camp because Yeah, I'm not coming back. And we were all like, Uh huh. What are we going to do? So, you know, we ended up actually making the playoffs that year, and we did. Okay. And I couldn't imagine how good we would have been if we had Barry Sanders there. That's wild. OK? Yeah, I'm just I'm looking here. I'm going on 1999 Barry Sanders are still around. But you forget like Barry Sanders just up and retired. Out of nowhere just said peace out. See you later. That's crazy. So so you guys are there one day and all of a sudden, Barry Sanders says. See you later. Yeah, It's like, okay, We're getting ready to go to training camp, you know, and you're getting ready to kind of leave your family and and it's July. We're going to training camp and all of a sudden the big media hype comes out. Barry Sanders says he's retiring, and it's like we what You know, like our whole off season was predicated on because this is what Barry like. This is what he how he wants to run. The ball was the scheme he likes and so you know, we went in and you know, we had some good players that were his backups, but You know, I can't imagine what would it would have what we would have done on offense if we would have had very I'm looking at who The leading rushers were on that team. I mean, Yeah. Imagine being Greg Hill or Ron Rivers. I'm looking at it right now. Those poor guys talking about filling shoes. Oh, my goodness. Wow. Crazy. That mattered who they would have brought in. Um you know, those were not some shoes that anybody could have field. Yeah, they Whoever they brought in their name is not Barry Sanders. That's who that is. That's crazy. That's right. I mean, we had a good team. Jim Zorn was my quarterback coach. Yes, sir. Crooms. Those are offensive coordinator Bobby Ross was the head coach. We had a great team, and we had I thought we had a really good scheme. It just didn't work out like we wanted. Yep. Yep. Gus Frerotte, former NFL quarterback. Joining me on the Jim roam show here on CBS. Sports Radio. Gus, Tell me about your podcast, man. I looked at the website. It looks like You got some great guests on here. Whether you're a writer, you're actually a player. You're a coach. You're in the CEO of a company. Words have shaped our lives in a lot of ways. So that's what I talked about. And my guest this week on huddle up with Gus is now there are none other than Joe Name this and man. It was one of my favorite shows I've ever done because he's a Pittsburgh guy. "Across the field. And so I think it's been a give and take between the offense and defense, and I really like how it's going. I mean, I love the scoring, obviously, because I'm an offensive guy. But, you know also, um, you We know that a good defense is going to get you a long way. And so it's really a lot of fun to watch the NFL every year. Because these rookies are coming in. They're able to throw the ball around, and they do such an amazing job. Of understanding of defense. I think it's they're they're kind of light years ahead of where we were in the nineties. Gus Frerotte, former NFL quarterback. Joining me on CBS Sports radio accustom always curious someone with your career path. Detroit was to go play with Barry and, you know, be Scott Mitchell and hand it off and just watch him run the ball. And then you know, right before training camp because Yeah, I'm not coming back. And we were all like, Uh huh. What are we going to do? So, you know, we ended up actually making the playoffs that year, and we did. Okay. I couldn't imagine how good we would have been if we had Barry Sanders there. Yeah, It's like, okay, We're getting ready to go to training camp, you know, and you're getting ready to kind of leave your family and and it's July and we're going to training camp and all of a sudden the big media hype comes out. Barry Sanders says he's retiring, and it's like we what You know, like our whole off season was predicated on because this is what Barry like. This is what he how he wants to run the ball. That's why the scheme he likes and so you know, we went in and you know, we had some good players that were his backups, but You know, I can't imagine what we would have what we would have done an offence. If we would have had very I'm looking at who The leading rushers were on that team. I mean, Yeah. Imagine being Greg Hill or Ron Rivers. I'm looking at it right now. Those poor guys talking about filling shoes. Oh, my goodness. Wow. Yeah, Crazy when it mattered who they would have brought in. What's the ethos of your podcast? Huddle up with Gus? Yeah. You know, when I started this a couple years ago, I really wanted to get into Stories about people in the House sports shape their life. We all have a great story to tell. I could tell you a million stories about myself being a kid, My dad coming home from the mill. I saw football, baseball, whatever in the backyard and just fallen in love with the Steelers and the Pirates. All the teams here in Pittsburgh, where I grew up. And, you know, just I wanted to get that from everyone. It didn't matter who you were. What job you have now, But we all have a part of us that love sports. Whether you're a writer, you're actually a player. You're a coach. You're in the CEO of a company. Sports has shaped our lives in a lot of ways. So that's what I talked about. "Hey that guy's got juice. Let's do change the entire direction in the course of my family's life. I can't be excited though the now. Don't even think in deir. Are you kidding me. Are you all that just happened. Everything i just said there and more is potentially happening that one play dalian fucking thinking. Get your fucking ass back in the hut barry sanders. Hey barry sanders he. He'd scored touchdown and he just handed the ref and he was gone. Why don't we well bear. Centers also heisman right. There was also scorer. And there's another thing barry. Sanders was unbelievable. Worked his ass off. Let's get crazy embarrassed. Sanders had the ability to act like he had been there before because barry sanders by the way had fucking been there before it made it barry sanders the way he goes about businesses and how everybody goes about business. Maybe there's a lot of different stories. A log different situations a lot of different life events. Somebody acting differently than somebody. That just acted you know almost robotic while being one of the most exciting and electric players in the history got nothing but love for barry sanders. Let's not get crazy but there's a lot of people act like you've been there before it's like you think this motherfucker been scared eight people and maybe changing tire like he can't be excited aren't a game of emotion. Are we a game of excitement. Why is this a fucking penalty aketao remnants sitting on a chair being cool. You became my commissioner. You are you are my commissioner when you dancer fucking out your sock slide. You're fucking out. We don't want anything we want. Robots know most everybody hated. You then raj hated. You understood why you're trying to take the fun out of the game. You're doing it because you wanna be able to just plop em- play you didn't want to have to have players be brand names because then you could replace them easily okay. Honesty on the business side of it but we all agreed. That tribe has spoken that the games better when people are excited. Something's are too much all some things are way too much there. Some dances that happened. That looked a little bit more like basketball. Where we're all like. There's no way that can happen with full line. We get those some but it added to the game. The excitement added everything now. Taking away this making it a point of emphasis and i'm not saying that there should be agree. Gis if something happens. They should penalize them. Yes please. it's not for the good of our game not for the good of the league. Not good for fans good for anybody understand. That's going to happen but a point of emphasis means hey. We're cracking down on this. Because we don't want to happen anymore in why are we targeting that as opposed to targeting something else. I'll never understand my commissioner roger. Goodell is going to get to the bottom of this if sam acho doesn't do it. I say sam macho told me on up this morning. he's still players committee. He's gonna change this thing around. I appreciate the family doing that for all of us. Thank you saw because the overwhelming mike. Hey this rule fucking stinks from everybody. You think there is a real chance it before the season now. That is not the way once something gets in there. I think it is normally at least a year because even if you start telling them they have a lot of what i think we all have if you tell me if you tell me yeah there's a good chance like if everybody's telling me there's a good chance it's like okay. I'm not fucking doing that. Too all right on my time. You know that's kind of how the nfl. Yeah that's the. Xfl thing didn't have to happen to you. Know the review system didn't have to happen until bub-bubba the skycam you know that came in from blah blah blah. The rules that they initiate always coming down here on our on our time. It's our league. Let's not let these motherfuckers outside. Run wake is probably what is being said but boy it'd be great if they did just open up you know. They probably still use the old school projector. If somebody could just put a slide in there of a couple twitter feeds of what people are saying about this. Maybe that would make the league a little bit better. But they have so much to worry about which i understand. It's not easy running league the biggest league to greenwich league on earth. But why is this what we are trying to focus in on major league baseball. Who has the worst commissioner. In the history of sports he actually called the trophy that all the teams in the league that he commissions the piece of metal or something like that he's embracing like. Hey we're allowed to. Sports are allowed to be fun. It doesn't have to be surgery. It doesn't have to be cure. Curing some disease abrasion rob manfred is acknowledging that and somehow as soon as walt gets in there. He's i act is. Nobody's happy on our fucking field that whole life. That just changed for benny lemay. Don't don't want to hear about it pal. Get your ass back into the huddle because we got a referee here to look in the beach. I mean he was rally out quick fast..

"You won't join CBS for the biggest event of the year. Super Bowl. 55 got the best quarterback in the game right now, Patrick Mahomes leading the defending champs, the Chiefs. Against arguably the best average do it. Tom Brady and the box coverage getting in the way at 2 P.m. Eastern 11 Pacific with JB and the guys on these Super Bowl today, all leading up to kick off its sixties during three Pacific Sunday Super Bowl 55 is on CBS. Right. So once again, it is Super Bowl Week. I've got five NFL interviews Barry Sanders to the top of the hour, but I did start the show with some basketball. Why? Because of what did what went down in the A T. L. They're one of nine teams in the association, which are letting fans into the arena and then four people courtside got into it with LeBron and there's a back and forth and they got ejected. So if you wanna take a side go ahead. Personally, I'm not going to And I'm not. I mean, I was kind of critical of her, but I'm not taking a side because I don't know exactly what was said. I don't know exactly what was said. At this point, so I can't really throw in with either it would stand reason to LeBron's point. He's going to handle this thing a little more coolly with a cool head, then they would, Because is, he points out? We're not having any alcoholic beverages on the floor, and they might have bumped into a couple there in their seats. And also who do you think is gonna have a cool head and something like this? LeBron who gets this junk all the time? Probably every single night. Or courtside, Karen and all steroid ass. Decide again. Take Scattered aside. Hey, Rome. Did this gold digging clown say that she was 25. This piece of crap. Anna Nicole wannabe looks like she's 40. I thought that writ looked older than he actually was. But this instagram phony tough girl takes the cake. If I was this gold diggers husband I would not be taking her to MBA games because I guarantee you those MBA players make more money than her husband. And if she sees something, she likes its deuces to the old man and hello MBA money. You're gonna let a 25 year old girl intimidate you during the game by Mario and except I don't know. She made it pretty clear that she's standing up for her old man. That's why she said that she said what she said. And told LeBron to shut the bleep up or she would believe him up. And don't talk to her old man like that. Talked my husband one more time,.

Frank Gore passes Barry Sanders, hits No. 3 spot on NFL's all-time rushing list

"I'd like to talk about a player on the bills. Offense the man they call the inconvenient truth Mr Franklin Gore now I understand that people who watch the NFL are generally loyal to teams and not players and that everyone has different allegiances. But the fact of the matter is if you don't root for Frank Gore at this point you're just wrong I'm sorry but those are the rules. Gore has been in in this league for fifteen years and on Sunday he passed Barry Sanders to move up to third on the all time rushing list another gift decor by drew over the left side. He gets closer. The first down is down at the forty one yard line. That's a gain of seven and that is enough record is now the third all time leading rusher in NFL history. How about that? You saw it here today folks along with Emmett Smith. He's one of just two running backs to start in over two hundred games with remarkable. Not only because he's thirty six years old when he began colleges quarterback Josh Allen was five but because he's conquered so much for those who are unfamiliar with his life. The story. Here are the broad strokes core grew up in poverty and his mother suffered from addiction. He overcame severe learning disability to get to college and once he got out there he tore his ACL twice and yet fifteen thousand two hundred eighty nine yards later. He still here about a year your ago. I was asked to participate in an NFL insiders panel where we argued why various player should get into the hall of fame. I made the case for Gore. Are The reason why he isn't a shoo-in is that despite his longevity he's never really achieve dominance at his position which I understand but even if he was was never the best he has always been great historic matters deeply to the league into everyone. WHO's been fortunate enough to watch him play? So here's hoping he makes it to sixteen thousand yards.

Andrew Luck's Retirement Highlights the NFL's Growing Problem

"Know what it wasn't long ago. I think it was last week when two weeks ago when mclovin said hey how about this poll question is andrew lock more likely to be an slight disappointment or hall of famer and this is when the ankle injury came. I remember it was the calf and then the owner robert say said i think it's an ankle and then i started to think there's more involved in this. There's more to this story. Sorry ben just glynn from the calf to a high ankle. I don't even i still don't know what he has but we know it serious enough that he announced his retirement and everybody's got an opinion on this. His decision to retire was a shock to the system for you know the the entire n._f._l. Nation when people say boy oy this is the most shocking football story we've ever heard i mean like new. No no no no how about we start with o._j. Simpson michael vick aaron hernandez. Those are shocking stories. Andrew looks different cat all right he is. He went back to college to get his degree. He could have left after his junior year. He went back to get his degree in architectural design. I believe he there are guys who are or football players and then there guys who play football most our football players j._j. Watt is a football player. Should he still be playing football. No no not at all but it andrew luck is a guy who is a guy who was good at playing football. I don't know if he's a a football guy and there's a difference in that but that doesn't mean he wasn't good at it or didn't love it. I just think that we're we're so unfamiliar. Oh you're with an athlete who uses logic where you go. What are you doing. Most football players in pauley had the analogy. Let's say you have a rock rock in your shoe. Most football players will continue to play in fact. Stop down on the rock. Where is andrew luck goes. How about. I just take the rock in my shoe. I mean it sounds logical. He just took the rock out of a shoe. Football players will tie the shoe differently like they'll somehow find a way. Hey i'll walk differently who care i'll take madison. Shoot me up. Whatever andrew lucked just said. I'm gonna take the the pebble <music> out. He's removing football from his life. Everybody has an opinion on this and when he started rattle off the list of injuries it makes a lot of sense but it's hard for us to imagine and by the way athletes are just commodities. We've moved on from all of these athletes. We don't care really don't care eric. Dickerson joined us in los angeles when we were out there and here's one of the great running backs of all time any looked great. I said the kind you look like you could give me a couple of carries. He said people don't realize the toll that this takes on goes. I slept in a reclining chair for two years because i had neck and back injuries. Nobody cares about eric dickerson's injuries. Nobody cared about jim. Mcmahon's injury his health. He thought about killing himself. We move on and andrew luck realizes that and yes he got paid paid and the reason for people to be upset and how do you do this to your team. And how do you quit on your team. I understand those emotions. I really do but i have to look at this and say andrew. Luck did what andrew luck thought he needed to do. Is it inexcusable to you know oh colts fans. Yeah i get that. I don't think he's saying boy. Watch what i'm gonna do. I'm going to set up the colts for failure now. I don't think i think that he had to process this. It took a long time. It's something you do you do well. It's your identity and maybe he doesn't want that is his identity and can you get away from this. You know the guys who had all the surgeries. I'm seeing all of this stuff here. Everybody's saying how do you do. I understand all of those emotions. Russians here but andrew lock did what andrew lucked thought he needed to do. If barry sanders was a quarterback and he walked away we would have abba bigger issue with what barry sanders did at age thirty-one calvin johnson at aged thirty. Jim brown age thirty. What are you doing walking away from the sport. Guess you've got a contract extension. There are a lot of questions. I have ranted you luck in this situation. When did you really know and when did you let the cold snow and what is the reason. Is there more surgery down. The road like you went through shoulder. You had and i put some of this on the colts by the way ryan grigson in particular the former g._m. What did i say for years. You have this investment. It's like having this unbelievable engine but then you have a car that's falling apart. You traded for trent richardson. You didn't use any lyman you finally went out and got quinton nelson and what happened. Andrew luck had the best season of his career. He had the fewest sacks. It's not something that takes a whole lot of thought. Hey how about we have a good offensive line. Chances are andrew. Luck might be able to play play a little bit longer but so many injuries and then you start to get down on yourself and you get in your head and you don't wanna go through it and and i look i couldn't play the game. I've told you if you ever watched a game on the sidelines. You never let your kids play. It is violent. It's more violent than you think because when you hear it you can close your eyes on the sidelines just listen. There's no way you go yep. I want to play play. I know we're macho. I know we all wanna play through pain. I did stupid things with my knee and my shoulder waited thirty five the years to get my torn rotator and i'm not even a pro athlete. I have an artificial knee because i was stupid when i played this guys out there and they're taking shots at him. He's getting hit lacerated kidney. He's got shoulder. He's got yeah. I understand all of these injuries. Do we want him out there. Yes because it's about us he. What are you doing to my fantasy team. Hey what you doing to my colds. You're you guys got a chance to. I understand hold loose things but this is something that we don't understand an athlete who says i'm gonna take a logical approach. He's a guy he's got a flip phone. He's got a book club. I mean he he's not your normal guy. Hi and we can't understand this. He's newly married. We can't understand this because all of us would go. I killed a play and make that kind of money and be a starting starting quite yes. This story is about us in how we perceive. This people didn't play wanna tell you they would play or how oh you need to play or. What's wrong with your your soft. You gotta take a step back and andrew luck. Doing i see all of this twitter chatter. Oh this is going to stay with him forever. I is very sanders. A quitter calvin johnson a quitter. Is jim brown a quitter right i. I haven't heard that i'd never heard somebody say. Jim brown's a quitter. Barry sanders quit walked down on the <hes> the lines how can you do. I guess andrew luck is a quitter but i'm guessing will move past this calvin johnson. Is he a quitter or see smart. I don't know i just i saw this reaction this vitriol that andrew luck how dare you do for this. He walked away from his team. I get i get it. He gave up on a sport. He excels at but no matter what people say. I think we can all agree. Andrew luck was outstanding when he did play and wishing luck and no pun intended with his life after football.

V. that rocked everybody's world and then the other one that comes to mind is Michael Jordan retiring after winning championships and then he suddenly starts playing baseball with the Birmingham barons so when those stories though have some other impacts you know with Michael Jordan you can always get into the speculation as to why he was really gone from the NBA and played baseball for a little bit of time you bring up Barry Sanders that seems to be a franchise issue with the Detroit Lions when it comes to putting a good team around star players and money Calvin Johnson actually has a similar situation on going right now with the lines this one to me is just sad it's sad it's disappointing in the sense that Andrew luck had so much going for him coming into the NFL he was gonna be ushering in the next wave of quarterbacks that we were gonna be talking about the same regard as Tom Brady and Peyton manning and as we've mentioned couple times already Peyton manning's actually gonna out last Andrew luck and that's where we are tonight yeah it's yeah we we use the word disappointing earlier when we were looking for the one word to sum up his career because neither one of us felt like a botched was appropriate despite the note a Superbowl absolutely not yeah one of the most ballyhooed quarterbacks of all time yeah he is a four time pro bowler he is he a hall of Famer I mean that that that is a double the rate over the next couple so how about slow down the hall of fame come on how about how about that give me one give me one minute Joe is Andrew luck a hall of Famer to give you one second no come on that is the one of the best quarterbacks of his era yes we barely saw what he was four time Pro Bowl well I backstabber I mean is there like a rookie wing of the hall of fame that we could put it right now that's a silly conversation in that I've seen it kind of pop up on social media but I do think that these silly conversation right now what's not so the conversation is what do the colts do going forward I think we're gonna be finding out more about Andrew luck situation in the next coming days and Adam Schefter broke the news is most definitely going to fill in some of these gaps whether they know how long this conversation going on but you do have the immediate impact of football not just for the call from cell to the division and what the AFC playoffs

Joe Horrigan leaves Pro Football Hall of Fame after 42 years

"Joe Horrigan. Yes. Forty two years, the keeper of the flame at the pro football fame his last day on the job as yesterday. Mean so would you see the buildings still standing? I don't know. Personally held it up in confirmed. But one of the nicest sweetest guys. ESPN did a story about have over the weekend. I mean he has been doing everything for the hall of fame. And in terms of a great story when we first. When we. Like the sweetest man he would be the ones calling the hall of famers on the phone to let them know. A couple times doing pretty cool, rich because. Yeah, because we all right? So I'll tell story here. So we're on the air in, in Houston, Texas, at the Super Bowl for Super Bowl thirty eight our first one we ever did. Okay. Or the calendar year two thousand four NFL season two thousand three year that the patriots. The panthers. And then we watched them beat the eagles the next year Jacksonville. So reason why I'm bringing this up is our set was right near in the convention center, I ever NFL total axis set right near the main convention center dra- hall like the largest room in the convention center where they held all the press conferences, including for the pro football hall of fame. Now all you folks out there. No, the pro football hall of fame class is announced now at the NFL honors they try to keep it quiet. David Baker, the president of the pro football hall of fame walks around and knocks on doors of hotel rooms were all the eligible finalists are holed up with their families hoping to hear that knock on the door, and it's created some really amazing video moments where David Baker lets the players know that. They're now fully enshrined. They're immortal. It's like a very nice. It's, it's like a publisher's clearinghouse moment without the check. Right. So that's the way it's done now. And they try and keep that quiet until it's announced that the NFL honors a used to be they just announced in the press conference. That's it. And the players who were finalists were invited to the Super Bowl city and those that thought they were gonna make it showed up. Others were working on TV in many other parts of their their lives. There were working professionally at the Super Bowl and for just happened to be there, and some just wouldn't show because they didn't wanna show up to the host city and then find out they didn't make it. It's expensive. You know, and it stinks. I remember one year Warren Moon. Told me the year he got in Warren Moon. Was in town, and he was driving in a car. Somewhere around the city. I forget, what city was announced he was ending his driving in a car, and he was either going to get the phone call from the hall to say that he was in and he'd show up at the convention center drive convention center, or you didn't get the call, Dr the airport. Town. So that's the way it used to be. We're sitting there. And our green room was right next to our NFL, total access at, and John Elway and Barry Sanders, went in that year together. Jill. Look that up for me, make sure that this might not a pulling this story here. Was it? John Elway in Barry Sanders. Think went into the same pro football hall of fame class in the summer of two thousand four. And they were announced N Houston together, and they were. Correct. And they were in our green room. They were in our green room, just chilling out before they were being brought into the draft hall into the into the convention center, press conference hall room. And being announced. And we got an idea at the NFL network. You know what? Let's make this a thing. Like we had video of them waiting, and just we could have interviewed them and like, okay so players are here. And the press conference is going there. Let's televise the press conference. So the next year, I was the host of the press conference, and it was. Difficult. Tap dancing for me when I'm up there and hard-bitten media of the NFL world was used to just having the announcement happen. Right. And those who were there showing up and they'd be there, and they'd find out the rest of them. Instead, we just drew. We I think I kinda Jim great it like we try to draw out and the people in the room. The media members room really getting pissed off. So next year, it was just like we're gonna nounce them and wait for the people to come and show up, and then I would interview them, but sometimes it would take them five ten minutes to get to the convention center. And then the meantime, we would Joe would get the guys who was not who are not there on the phone for me to interview live. I remember those. Joe a couple of times me on live NFL network television. Just trying to tap. That's I forget the name of the guy, you don't have to look it up either. He was a veterans committee. And shrining who had been out of public life for very long time. And I'll be honest with you, who I never heard of I had no idea, he played like it was really from a long time ago. But we were so desperate to fill time. Joe got him on the phone. I don't wanna say. Joe got the guy on the phone, and as we're coming back from commercial break, he tells me, so and so's on the phone, but he probably can only answer questions because he has dimension. Mike ally. Gosh and Joe then ran away. Because he had another phone call to make. Sweetheart. I mean this guy is just so and I just was okay. You know, this is a great moment for this man, I asked him a couple of questions. He was able to actually answer them. But Joe gave me that nice little heads up. You know, hey, just right heads up for you. I may not be able to answer a single question. Guy. He just a sweetheart of a guy and I just wanted to say, thank you, Joe, he's out there, driving around, or he's on the driving range, or wherever somebody just let them know gave a
