"True blue by Madonna, big album, different light by the Bengals, right? Dancing. Any money? Any money? Any money did yet? Let's see. Four by Huey Lewis and the news. That was a huge album. Crowded House crowded. Yeah. That was four in 86, yeah. Are you proud of house? Yep, crowded house had the hit. It was the song of the year. That year, don't dream it's over. Came off their debut. Cyndi Lauper, Europe came with the final countdown. Duran Duran, notorious, cooling the gang. New kids on the block broke. Boomtown rat, a boomtown by David and David. That was the name of the album. The only good song on the album, it's a great fucking song. It's a great song. Welcome to the rest of the album kind of stinks. Stinks, yeah, yeah. All right, Jack. Let's get you some trivia. Then we'll work our way out of here. 5 questions. 5 questions. All right. I still got to stay in music. This is an interesting factoids in this day of music coming up. I think you might be interested in it. And believe it or not, there's no fucking Rolling Stones or Beatles references or Elvis. This is the day. This day in music history, none of them would talk about. None of them did anything. All right, Jack, in 1986, the bangles topped the American shots with walk like an Egyptian. What color were the crocodiles mentioned in the second verse of the song? What color were the crocodiles mentioned in the second verse of the song? Were they? I'll give you an option. Okay. With a gold? With a blue or were they yellow? What color were the gas gold? I'll guess gold. I'll guess gold. Pure guess. Pure. All right, question number two. Who had a hit in 19 86 with the song, don't leave me this way. Was it Michael McDonald? Gloria Stefan and Miami sound machine? The communes are Christopher Berg. I will guess Gloria Estefan. I just posted this video the other day. This is a great remake by the communities. Don't leave me this way. With seeing a Jimmy Somerville from the bronski beat. The bronski. Yeah. Yeah. Jimmy summoned a great voice. Great. He's probably got the highest voice. He makes Barry Gibbs sound like darry Manila. I mean, Barry White, mister falsetto. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no, no. You say it, you're saying that Jimmy Somerville and his falsetto is higher than Gary makes Barry Gibbs sound like Tom Waits. That's even good. Barry White Tom Williams. You can't go wrong either way. Another question number three. Let me see. Did you miss the visit to earth by this comet in 1986? Don't worry, it'll be back again in 2061. What's the name of this regularly scheduled celestial traveler? Is it? Hail bob comet? Comic kahut? Lexi's comment on Halley's Comet. Hello bob hill up. The hill bob comment? Halley's Comet. Was it Bill Haley's comment? Bill Haley's, yeah. Question number four, let me see, bob DJ sent me a text. This is kind of interesting. Let's see. It's your bob D has to say. Oh, yeah. I didn't know. Question number four, not music related. Just 1986 related, like the class project. On average, how much was a gallon of gas in 1986 on average? Was it a dollar 7? Was it 94 cents? 89 cents, a 77 cents. I'll say a dollar 7. In 1986, a gallon of gas cost 89 cents. That's why we could drive those fucking big Chevy impalas and stop it. Stop it. That's why we could drive all those fucking big buicks. Gas guzzle is because there's only 89 cents a gallon. All right. Is your current vehicle a gas guzzler? Lex's GX four 60 gets 16 to 18, maybe 18 miles a gallon on the highway? Yeah. I'm not far behind you and Mike. You and I have to put the good stuff in, don't we? Yes, yes, yes. They say you don't, but I'm fucking a big believer in. If you got an engine like that, you need to give it the best gas. The highest stock chain to make it run properly. I don't need that thing to knock it. All right, question number 5, which of these movies, you're actually, let me see. You got how many did you get right? You got one. I think I only got one right. So far, you got one right, yeah. The fuck was that? This is Christ. The throwing shit at me here in the studio. All right, which of these was doctor Arizona? Look down at the bottom there. What is that? It's a fucking light. And I didn't turn it on. It's going down, buddy. If you're watching the video, you see that? I didn't fucking do that. Right there. What the fuck? Anyways, all right. Creepy. All right, which of these songs, which of these movies was not, I repeat, was not released in 1986. Was it? Dirty dancing, labyrinth, Top Gun, our Ferris Bueller's day off. Labyrinth, Top Gun, a Ferris Bueller's day off, was not released in 86. I will guess labyrinth. Not your night, buddy. The movie that was not released in 1986 was Harrisburg was day off. Oh Jesus, I'm just gonna let you dancing. There you go. 30 ten. There you go. All right, Jack, not such a good night, but you been good, so you can have enough night. Hey, you know what the top ten this week in 1986 was? Number ten, dream time by, I'm gonna see if you even know these. Hall and Oates. Okay, I'll get into it. Yeah, it's very good. There was his first solo I don't know if it was the first solo album, but it was his solo album and the one hit off of that. Yeah. Number 9 was true colors. By? Cyndi Lauper. Yeah. Number 8 was you won't get this Friends and lovers by Gloria loring and Carl Anderson. 7. Number 7 was this week in 1986 was hot beat by this was a cringe.

"Basically, I don't know if everybody is probably listened to that or they think they've listened to it. It's actually a two record set and so that's what? Say, say 6 songs on each side. Just say 6. That's 24 songs. On the Saturday night fever soundtrack. And everyone's like, oh, greatest soundtrack ever. Greatest soundtrack ever. Wrong. There's only 7 good songs out of that whole thing. Maybe. Maybe. I just named all four of them. And they're all on one album. One of the albums. Rest of us trash. A lot of trash on that album. Double album. Looking for Barry Gibb. Good for him. Did you know? Shaka Khan was the first R&B artist to have a crossover hit featuring a rapper. Yeah. With Chucky Kahn, took a car, took a car, took a car and let me love you. Let me love you, check account. Check your comments, all they want to do. See, I can do it. I can do it, but I'm not going to. With the song I feel for you in 1984, that little Chaka Khan was, she was a babe. So I was a hottie. No doubt. Especially when she was with Rufus to help me something good. Tell me, tell me tell me, I know. I shouldn't do that. Right now, Jack's listening and cringing. I don't care. I don't care. And there you go. I will be bringing that up. I'll bring that up later Glenn in birthdays today. I'll be bringing that up. Someone just messaged in the tipping it off. All right, I'll say it. Today's chocolate born on this day. Jackie Khan, but I'll be mentioning that later also. Let's see. But she was hot. No doubt about it. Go back and check her out when she was with Rufus, too. She was young. Let's see. Now this is kind of fucked up. Leonard Warren died after singing to die a momentous.

"And that's not what you do. You just don't risk, you know. Are you talk to each other? And I thought, you know, that's a fascinating little bit of information and not something I ever thought about. Until somebody thought to ask the question, you know? And so and so I think when I think about someone like stigma, no one ever asked in the question. So I don't really have the answer. We can infer, like I said, the sense of smell as an inference. But I don't think I don't know. I don't know how he was so good at it. Like I said, the things we can see the gambler. He was definitely fearless with his money. He invested all the money into Saturday. For most of it, Paramount put in very little reaped very little of it, even the very little they reaped, though, kept them going for several fiscal quarters. So it was such a mega hit. I think even more than sit on a fever in a weird way, if you look to Greece, that's where you're like, how the hell did he turn kind of stayed 1950s whatever? Greece or musical into this hit that my wife still sings. People kids loved that movie. I don't know. I wish I knew. We presented in the film as best we can, but I don't know what that secret sauce was. And I don't think anybody ever I'm not sure the question was put to him. Maybe he would have said as a kid I'd loved musicals or I don't think we have that information. In an interesting way though, I think his sexuality, which we deal with in the film, to a certain extent, about how it sort of drew him to disco and the clubs that he loved to go to and how disco began his gay music. Black music. You know, he did have love affairs with singers and things that were clear and he loved. I think we say it in the film, but you know he was in love with Andy and Barry Gibb. He's probably in love at Clapton. He was probably in love at Townsend. A lot of Joey from forgetting Joe Kelly, who's in Senate fever, told me. And after a while, it was like that would have taken away from, I think the narrative arc, but told me that one day went up to its apartment. It was just like leaped upon by stigma. So I think he had a yearning. There was definitely maybe he wanted to be an artist, maybe he wanted to celebrate it in a way. You know, and he loved he loved singers. He loved songwriters. So I don't know. You know, it's like something I think was sort of grapple with, but I use the McCartney example just like one of those things. It's like, I don't know, maybe I wish he would have been less a recluse and maybe he'd left a memoir or something could have drawn into, but there wasn't that. It's so interesting because he has such great artistic instincts and understood how to put people together, like great producers do. But also whenever he's asked about it and you show in the film, he mostly deflects by talking about the success of the things that he's done..

But i guess she was old enough that she could have done lines but she wouldn't sit still long enough hoarding studio so what they do is they just followed her with a microphone and let her play and they just chose the best noises and things that she would say while she was playing in. Use that for for booze audio with with that being the what they had to do. They got some stuff that really works well in the story like you know what she says. She's at the sushi restaurants. "There was a lot of disco where people got lazy and they use the same pre-programme beat but if you listen to the saturday night fever album every one of those songs is completely original. That's that was when Barry gibb was like. I can literally throw songs away. I don't even know what to do anymore like here here here here. Here take lionel richie literally when he wrote lady and brought it to the commodores like we got enough ballots dude. We're fine to sell it and he called up. Kenny rogers went. Hey you want a number one record. He goes yeah. Sure foam like that. Was that was the level that they were operating at that point. A lot of it had to do with cocaine but it is no. It's part that was going on so why this love Fading out in the cars who. I love ricard's bike. They were just. Oh my god Kiss puts out a cars. Al basically and pink. Floyd was big kisses. Like we gotta have a concept album. That's right but but there's something there's something so charming and spinal tap ish about that where they're open like there was a point were they were the vanguard they had made up something new but then that doesn't last and they just very openly. Were like all right. What's popular will do it. And so i don't know there's something so sweet and real about that to me. I kinda dig it. That doesn't really bother me. I don't know why it's it's that long jetty that survivor stuff man. I mean even in ninety four when grun shortsighted home it out a grunge album. Gosh did not say that was called carnival souls When i first heard it. I remember the only i had this memory that the lead single is a song jungle in a like a great stone temple pilots song. My buddy was this kiss somebody. They are out of control yeah. Nfl from what. I've heard people. I've met him like paul. Stanley is like the nicest guy in the planet like. Genuinely one of the nicest people and gene simmons is a demon is an actual demon in human flesh and they complement each other perfectly. I mean i met jane a few times and i must say within two minutes of meeting him. He was trying to sell me a kiss credit card he was. He's like a url. You look like a nice leather jacket honors. You'll see how they make the music and you'll go. Ah. It's cool, and I know we talked about this when we talked about the documentary before, but the whole idea of of sampling a part of a song. They invented that pretty much They So their drummer was sick or something or he had to go home because his mom died. It was something like that, and they had recorded a little bit of Of, uh, a drum track, and they're like, Well, we got to finish this. How do we finish it? And it was one of the Gibb brothers. That was like, Well, we'll just loop it around and play it over and over again. We can't do that. Sure we can. While you've convinced me. I love the BGs. That it's in. That's that's innovation. That's Yep, it is. And and Barry Gibb has written all the songs. Yeah, like, not not just be. He's written for everybody. You would be surprised the songs that he's really Barry Gibb wrote. If you love the BG so much, why don't you marry him? I think you would have a new appreciation for them. Little big town there. Cheryl Crow, Alanis more set, and they were cutting songs from the Bee Gees catalog, and he said they could pick whatever they wanted. They could do jive talking. One of them did. They could do some of the very early stuff. A lot of them did. I'll drop a little bit of that here and there. But since that CD has now dropped, maybe I'll even included in our Sunday night music show called Sunday standards. We did that last night, too. From 7 to 9 o'clock. "He started as a documentary filmmaker shooting in wars and conflict zones. He's made several theatrical films based on real events, including terrorist attacks. His films include United 93 Captain Phillips. His movie 22. July was based on the terrorist attack in Norway by the far right extremist Anders Breivik. Ingress also made three Jason Bourne movies. His new movie News of the World stars Tom Hanks. It's a Western set five years after the Civil War. You know, you talked about the highway. You wanted to make a movie with a happy ending, which you don't typically do. But you did with your new movie news of the world. So after making many movies that are reenactments of really tragic events, terrorist events Now you've made a movie where there's ah, a lot of trouble. Everyone is broken. But there is by its standards. You know, a happy ending. What do you want to do next? Do you want to pursue? Something else that ends With some happiness with characters being better off than they were when they started. I honestly don't none. I enormously enjoyed making this film. It was a dream come true, actually, honestly and truly, you know, to make a Western, you stand out in the desert. You know, you can feel when you look out in the distance that the ghost of Papa Ford out there some way. You know what I mean. And, you know you're gonna scramble inadequately upon the shoulders to the giant and try and take a shot of the Western You know it was. It was a wonderful, wonderful experience. I don't know. I don't know what I'm going to do. Next will be interesting to see how a SE R I'm already asking myself the question. You know, what is the question And I think the question is, I heard somebody on television are as that event was going on last week. D C. Say hey was a very thoughtful person. Some political commentator, he said. The question is, Is this the end of something? Well, the beginning of something, then I thought Yep, That's absolutely right. That's gonna be the question I think will govern probably the next two or three years of their lives. On a lighter note. How did you like working with horses left? It used to write a little bit when I was young, But not now, But Tom was really good on the horse. He was fantastic. But it was it was thrilling. Just want I mean, you know, you go in the desert and you see the horses and the wagons and you know the way people dressed and you're in the West, and it's it's mythic. And it's part of your boyish imagination, you know, And as I say, I, I I I loved it. I loved the experience of making it. It was physically demanding as a film. But it was there was a lot of heat and dust and freezing cold at night climbing. I'm in that shoot out meant to climb up that bluff. It was took two hours to get the crew up there and yet to God and ropes. And then there were rattlesnakes around the place. You know me attempt Wranglers. You know, it was it was, but the adventure of it, I think really brought people together. I think people loved That's about it, You know? You know, just just Ah, A sidebar note. I don't think I've ever seen Tom Hanks in a western before, except for Toy story. Where, where? It's not a Western, but he is. You know, he is. Ah, toy wouldn't cowboy in it. Well, he's the real deal in this and I thought he sat Well in that landscape for either he looked the part to me and I love Home when he's with it. And yes, his face is dirty most of the time. When has he is and has experienced behind his eyes. He's seen things he's done things and so haunted. Quality to him, and it seems such an obvious thing to say that I think we all must take him for granted as a movie stuff because he is so consistently good in the things he does. I want to thank you so much for talking with us and thank you for making news of the world which I enjoyed so much. Paul Greengrass. It's really been a pleasure. Thanks a lot. I mean, I guess the events of the last 24 hours of cast a bit of a shadow over this hearing today, But what will you be saying to this parliamentary committee? How do you think you could get live music up off his knees against safely? Well, I think we need to be as positive as we possibly can. I mean, it was devastating to have virtually our whole festival season wiped out in 2020. We will ask for further funding to support Where very sad to see So many musicians on D techie cruise on backstage people currently driving vans for grocery companies. It's not very satisfying. Our biggest problem really is when we can safely get our festivals up and running again. We're very nervous that the technical expertise might have gone and left us.
