In this year's fan choice awards try the twitter handle at Ab our live or the America's best racing facebook page. Let them know that in the gate belong? Barry Abrams that trainer and owner had been involved with thoroughbreds almost as long as yours truly Berry Abrams has been working here at ESPN. I started in October nineteen ninety-two, the owner and trainer transitioned from standard breads to thoroughbreds in nineteen ninety-three. He trained the occasional graded stakes winner including famous digger who won the grade one del Mar Oaks in nineteen ninety-seven and unusual suspect who won the grade one Hollywood. Turf Cup back when there was still off Hollywood park that was ten years ago. Abrahams also conditioned unusual suspects, father unusual heat who was not a great runner but turned out to be the all time leading sire in California in terms of what his offspring earned on the track. Abrahams bread one of unusual heats great grandchildren a son of one of the country's current leading sires uncle. That four year. Old Colt is Mojo. foursome Mo- forces still six lengths off the lead and getting pushed along at this stage as the field turned for home blitzkrieg firing a big shock sharp samurais now coming in on the outside Mo force a gathering momentum under extremely confident handling. Fours shifting in as he strolls on by another outstanding performance from Mo Four. That win at the beginning of October and the city of hope mile was Mo- fours as sixth win in his last seven starts. Five of those wins have come in graded stakes and think about this until last year owner trainer Barry Abrams had won eleven graded stakes title in his twenty seven year career. What makes this story so much more poignant is that Abrahams the first generation immigrant from Minsk Belarus died on October ninth from throat cancer at age sixty six he was diagnosed in two thousand four and battled valiantly for over fifteen years a surgery to remove half his voice box in two, thousand five and a recurrence of the cancer and a second throat. Surgery in two thousand eleven, he left the training part to others in two thousand sixteen but continued on as an owner and breeder Mo. Four TSA is trained by Peter Miller a few days before the news broke of Barry Abrams passing. We reached out to mow forces co owner enough, Rio Pecoraro to talk about Abrahams and the horse that conversation follows now. I spoke with him right after this video, what a race out was and so I call them we spoke for a few minutes. You know I don't normally speak with him over the phone just because of the situation with his. Speaking so usually attacking each other, but I did call one spoke for a couple of minutes wife Diane was there on the phone and this horse smoke is a dream come true for me and I know burying Diane have talked about this horse and Earth Okay and I'm not kidding you when I say that when I reached out to Berry was may of two thousand and sixteen just to see if the any horses that I could be a partner with him on. He mentioned that he had this baby at on Komo and We spoke for half hour via tax and he allowed me to buy fifty percent of the horse and I just remember you know this sources six weeks old. And he said the deal would we? If you come into as a partner we're going raise some because his plan was to sell them in the in the fall sale. And I said of course says That's we're we're going to raise some that's the plan and You know I remember Diane called me Harry's wife. Holiday. Dot. It's was. That this horse was going to run and they weren't happy just sell them. When I say excited she was excited. In. So we chatted, and of course, you know the baby was still young and then you know watching them grow, he was up the farm. To Tailor made for. and. They would send us some photos and updates about the horse and you know they were raving about him when he was six months old nine months old, they would send us a little report card with the photo of him and. And our can't originally was to run him in the Derby. That would be a can but unfortunately he had. shin-splints you know John Orchard Get up, and so we had to put him on the far for six months and that Kinda messed up his. Path to the Derby. And Brian Lynch was a trainer at the time. And I met Brian here in San Diego few years ago during the. Breeders Cup twenty. Seventeen. And he talked highly about the horse and then it was actually April last year Berry Call He. He just said, you know got told them. The horse should be here on the West Coast And I didn't hesitate 'cause I've known Berry for a while we've had a lot of horses together. And it's just been an unbelievable experience. You know once for me, I've only twenty some horses in my eleven years of ownership. And this is just a dream come true for myself and I know variant Diane. It's once in a lifetime to have a horse. Do what it's done in a year. You know we got five grader wins one great one forgery twos and That's in a short amount of time. When you think about this year covert nineteen, he's had three starts and so. It's been a great great ride and I know he's brought a lot of excitement. Berry Diane will always have a lot of gratitude to Berry and Diane for our be apart or with them in this horse You know it's just a pretty much a dream come true for me. Why did you reach out to Barry? What about him made? You want to be partners with him Well I met Gary. Back he? was friends with my uncles fallen law right PIZZA SALVO, head of market down in the neighborhood. And Bury met him back in the would come down and you know it was a young kid back then but I would see would come probably once a week during the del Mar.. Sandwich you know yes but the. I remember beating. One day I. Love it money back back then. One day I owned horses you know I. Would Love to get a couple of babies that have unusual heat and. You know at that point in time I was growing up in knowing about the industry. New. Burying Bandon the nor Barakat and usually. And so fast forward. I bet bearing probably was ninety, six, ninety, seven. I reached out to a friend of mine. Vicenzo Lavar. So who? Had Horses with Barry Mandolin and Good friend of mine. Reached out to him one day and was. Sitting on my buddies bar had a couple of drinks. You know what? It's time I'm ready to do this and. Sure enough. You know set up a luncheon and he told me Berry Diane. We're going to come down and meet them at his restaurant eastone. Gal. Airing. Berry brought down a list of five horses. On a piece of paper. And he says, you're more than welcome to by ten percent fifty.

"Left because of you know the way with its being set up so we've made it much simpler online. So the trainees would go online and do that automatically. And then as I said by involving our oh Retraining charity and directing people through their we. WanNa keep them if you like within that retirement community and maintain traceability through that whole process. You inevitably have seen some of the more grisly stories of what can happen to horses after they've left the track and so you know what some of these more nefarious owners are. What their mindsets are? How is this program designed to guard against that okay? So ideally what you'd think is if you're able to maintain traceability for horses for a few steps posts so if you had a horse that retied and went to an and then you had some indication that was gonNA become vulnerable because it's not being looked after properly or something else is going wrong eve. You can recognize that process and Mike Intervention and that's what would happen from traceability that would occur but again what we sit up here are are set up and we have not necessarily what we call inspectors. Barbaro are associated credit people who would keep an eye on retraining centres to see with. I go to they also they have. We have a recovery vulnerability way if we have Retired racehorses that then declared his vulnerable throughout as Rspca or whatever else. There is funding available to take those courses. Put THEM BACK INTO A rehoming place. Rea- system see they can be retrained and rehabilitative Good health so we have captured system in our Already it's been in place for the last twenty years. It's worked very very well. And that would continuing. We want to sort of embrace that even further. We can't so we make sure that we don't have where we have a minimal number vulnerable horses and again what we're looking for here is the most appropriate homing outcomes for retired horses. Well we were talking about how there might be a cooperative program between the B. H. A. And the Department of Agriculture regarding that for how long after a horse retires would you consider records to be mandatory in such a system? That's a very good question I think what we have how we answer that is I. I think the the the challenge for most jurisdictions east to capture initially in that first. Step down if you can stay off. Captured one hundred percent of those horses stepping out as every tied. That's your first goal once we'd go on to the next stage. I'm sure that the half hour down the road we can keep traceability completely because there are data protection laws. It's just we can't look at the addresses and things like that but again as to what we're trying to do here is overcome some of that data protection by saying if we involve these people who are taking these schools into our Arrow Ownership then through our we can maintain the traceability going on that whether that's five years or ten years or twenty years after they're retired who knows but ideally from an industry. You WanNa be artist say with captured all the information that I step out and we have in place. I mean number of processes that maximize our ability to oversee these forces in the Knicks career. As best we possibly can for as long as we can very interesting step in the effort to protect the stars of this industry. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Mr Sykes thank you very much for the cool art. Thanks to David Sykes then to author HOI APO. A group of racing enthusiasts. I know had come together to watch their three year. Old fillies debut race. These folks had varying levels of involvement in the sport. Some owned other horses others were fresh-faced here was a chance for the industry to show off. Its best side. The horses and the social atmosphere. The customer focused thing to do would include coming their lunch but customers are not paramount. I fear I know at least two members of that group declined to go when they realized they would not be treated well. What do you think they're going to tell their friends and family as if the racing experience isn't tough enough to sell beyond the problem. Of course safety is the lack of customer focus. Which really seems incredible to me. You know I'm not a company Schill but this would never happen. If a track was operated by Disney. You can get us on our youtube channel by searching in the gate. Those were the opening lines of the legendary nineteen seventies TV show. Welcome back kotter where the main character played by Gabe Kaplan returns to his New York City high school to become a teacher. Our next guest has done the reverse Kelley rube. We grew up loving horses and upstate New York grew up to become a middle school science teacher and then left. That stable career to return to the stables on TV, Mr. Qatar dealt with a group of teenage guys who seemed comically incapable of maturing into adults Kelly rudely now a thoroughbred trainer has an equine version of a teenager as three year olds in the spring, basically are, but this guy has done some growing up in the last few months, always mining. We'll have to make a three wide bid and he's willing to do. It always finding up to try for gold as Zinni off the scene now in position less than three alongs to go and always mining now in front from try for goal turning for home in Federica Teissier sakes, all ways mining set down and opens up a four length lead on try for goal always mining with a six now a seven Lang lead always mining robbing home past the Laura line and headed to the Preakness always mining comes into the Preakness on a six race winning streak albeit in races. Quite as rigorous as those on the Kentucky, Derby trail, none the less. The three year old gelding is answered the rhetorical question about dreams that you hear on welcome back kotter who'd have thought they lead you back here where we need you and buy back here. We mean to Maryland where Kelly ruble is based at fair hill with a chance to claim one of the American spring classics, and we welcome trainer Kelly ruby here too in the gate. This horse has made twelve starts already maximum security. Maybe you've heard of him has made five including that whole Kentucky Derby thing. The last nine of always mining starts have come in laurel in the last six of those have been wins, all enlisted or overnight stakes. What's been your philosophy on how to bring them along? He he was purchased by my current owners after his maiden win. So he's only been with me since he ran on the grass in Maryland last summer. So, you know, we've kind of just strategically followed the past the Maryland route tickets where we're at today. What mood the light bulb turn on forum last October when this winning streak started? I wish I could answer that. He's always been a very nice horse. I mean anyone is made nicely. I think the goal was always to stretch out. And they were very limited races for two year olds when we ran them on the grass. So after that we also have to just sit tight and wait till they had a route race for us. And obviously he relished the mile you grew up in central New York, which is not exactly horse country. I know I went to Syracuse. What made you even want to get involved with horses up in that perpetual league gray bleak part of the world. I don't know. I guess it was ever since I could walk or talk I'll ever wanted to do with the around horses. So it was just naturally in me. But yes, it was a little limited. I started writing at a quarter horse barn actually started competing on the quarter horse survey doing jumpers and hunters and from there, but an event horse and started shipping down to the Maryland, Pennsylvania area. And that's kind of how I ended up in the air. Area fair hill. But listen to your parents, you earn two master's degrees. Two masters degrees. It became a middle school science teacher. Now, first of all, they're possibly be a more draining job in the world. And being a middle school teacher. I actually really enjoyed that age the students are you know, there's just starting to develop themselves much like a young horse. So I thought they were a lot of fun. But yes, it's exhausting, and it wasn't necessarily something. I could see myself doing in the future. Which is why I went back and got my second masters for administration inside that for three years. And then decided you know, what horses are meant to be. We what happens you were wearing a suit as an administrator and everything and did you just have an piffle. Or was it a gradual thing it was gradual? You know, even when I was teaching. I went into the administration because the fact that I'd already voted so much of my time, and my education towards the education were also what could I do move up the ladder in that respect? So I tried the administrative row and decided that it was just for me it allowed more flexible hours than my current job. But it just wasn't something. I had a passion for jelly rudely. Rainer of Preakness contender always mining. Joining us here on the gate now before you get to fair hill, which you mentioned you leave teaching school for FOX hunting in Pennsylvania. Is that a thing that was just a job to kind of regroup and see what I was going to do with my life. But yes, I was managing harm, and we accented I we didn't really have an opportunity in where I grew up. I never FOX hunted in my life. So it was a unique experience in something that I greatly enjoy. But it also got me my start with Barclay tag here at their hill. How I started galloping for him here. He had a string at fair hill and my gal for him and then eventually moved up to become his assistant. How do you go from FOX hunting and Pennsylvania to fair hill and being an exercise rider? Well, I mean that job was just pretty much to move me to this area to figure out what I was going to do. And that's. When I met Parkway and became an exercise rider for them with the goal that I would eventually become an assistant and kind of learn the horse racing world from the ground up. What did your parents say about what you chosen to do? With those two masters degrees. They were not thrilled. They still think I'm a little nuts. And the fact that you know, I work seven days a week. And I haven't had a day off and many years, but we've had a little bit of success. They're starting to kind of be what my my goal was a long, and they're you know, they're coming around. But still it wasn't ideal in there is at the time. Well in light of that. How nervous will you when you finally decided to go out on your own? I wouldn't say I was nervous. You know? It was a goal, and I like I'm somewhat of a driven person. And so I had a goal. And I knew when I became an assistant as the idea was to learn as much as I could to have an eventual string of my own, and you know, it came around gradually and worked I way into it. And so it was just a natural flow. Really? I'm guessing you're hoping that the success of always mining will lead to more business how big a stable do you have? And how big would you like it to be? I have about forty horses in training right now. We've had more in the past. I'm a very hands on person. I checked every horse's legs every morning. So I don't know how we'd like to go. We'd like to continue to improve the stable and have a nice allowance level stable. So you know, it just depends on I don't know that there's a magic number to stop at. It's just when I feel like I can't stand up everything that I'm going to have to take a minute and relook at it. It is always morning still in control leads almost two legs. From is six furlongs twelve three sixty s lift to go with like the distances. No problem at all. For always finding always minding kept attest opening up a half dozen on Joey his second and tai-bo third. Always mining wants to run all day, always minding to win it by six or so we've talked on this show recently about the stickiness of the future of the Preakness. But considering that always mining. Is one six in a row with loyal race course and made nine of his twelve career starts there. I'm guessing you personally wouldn't be too opposed to running the Preakness there this year. This year. That'd be perfect. That's going to happen. I mean, how concerned are you that he can bring his race track with him? Even though it's still in the state of Maryland. Actually, I think the Tenneco course going to set him up nicely. It's got a nice long stretch. And he just has a very large scale thing stride. So I I I don't see this the track change to be a problem. We're going to have to do it. Eventually, then I'm guessing you don't mind seeing that just about all of the top derby contenders are going elsewhere now that plays well for us, absolutely more. We certainly wish you the best of luck here. Kelly ruby. Thank you so much for sharing a few minutes with us. Thank you. Thank you haven't. We're going to take our first break here on in agape when we come back. It's time to revisit that whole d Q rule and how it's interpreted on guessing, you know, why we need a refresher. So go

"Very very happy to talk with you thanks once again to call broberg into peter floor it sure a muddled picture as to who is the best threeyearold and whether any of them could be horse of the year it's not surprising that those who starred this springer fizzling out since those who were still developing men are now here just look at the derby winners from the last eight years or so how few of them one anything after that mind that bird super saver or nyquist now always dreaming peaked on derby day but then fell flat are the rigors of the derby trail too much for their young bodies or is a 20horse field too much of a crap shoot of course some continue to do well like chrome an american pharaoh but they do not render the overall point moved since we still have no clear favourite to become 300 champion we look to who emerged from the derby fray but the road to kentucky is in for identifying a seasonlong champion it's merely to choose the right horses for that day you can get us on our youtube channel by searching in the gate podcast you can get us on soundcloud as well which services the eye to store and tune in dot com you can get us on that little pink pot catch our app on your phone that you didn't even know you had a knife in subscribe to in the gate in the listen to have of the espn app for the full in the gate experience subscribe now in the listen tab of the espn half and you can follow me on twitter be abrams voice or a facebook at barry abrams boys that's in the gate for this week i barry abrams we'll see you next time.
