"Fuck you know has he asked me. He asked me the move. I just gave them figuring out. I don't know if he's ready to run through a brick wall right now and get mad all right so tell us your side of that. I'm GonNa Tell You. Straight up cagey was first of all. I don't understand how I don't think he remembers because I think the story meant a lot more to me than it did to him right. You know so I remember. 'cause I had cagey posters on my wall at a fucking Cagey Jersey growing up so the this is the story. This is what happened. The first time I play K. G. I'm hype as Hell like we're playing celtics. I'm on the Bulls and I think they're up like thirty points and I'm in the game like it's it's like the last seconds like nobody gives a shit so at the free throw line and He used to work out with this guy called Joel bucer and I was working out with him for pre-draft so I was always excited. Hoping like Cagey would walk in the gym and you know I was out be able to like work out with him and I remember asking him a question about you'll you like you. You'RE GONNA work out with Joe. This is just trying to be cool like I would just wanted to be. I just wanted to say sewn and my idol and he just like looked over and he was your leg who full fuck you talking to like fuck you think you talk into and then like when he said that I was like aw Shit I shouldn't have and then like I kind of fell back knowing that I shouldn't I shouldn't have said that. Like not not during the game right you know. And I didn't say anything and then when I didn't say anything I guess he thought I was the fucking. I guess he thought I was pushed. You something because he was like he kept louder and louder and then I was like and then from that from that moment on I swear to God I was like Yo. I'm going at him. Every single time we play we are going added. That's probably good for you. Though it changed it changed. It changed my career at that moment. Change my career because from that that moment on I learned that there's no love and battle and you know this competition like at the end of the day. I'm I'm trying to rip your fucking head off. You're trying to rip my head off. Let's let's go like I'm trying to win just as bad as you're trying to win. I'm not trying to make new friends and you know that that moment right there changed everything so like I I hear like I hear people talking about that moment that they weren't even there they don't even know what happened there talking about it right in the. Shin books like fuck out here like I remember. That was real important moment for me. And that's what happened and I and I'll say I'll say this to it A couple years later that year that Derrick rose got hurt. I know there's a lot like there's a lot of hype about that time. 'cause there's a movie that just came out. Cagey but that series. I will say this even when Derek Derek went down that year. If I didn't get hurt and we played Boston. We were coming at them. And I that was I was ready for that. I was hungry for that. That's wanted that I it took. It took like the only person or one of the only people I would assume in the league that you looked up to at that point and it reminded you that you're not there to look up to anybody anymore. He's your peers. So you exact now you just want dunk on exactly. I liked that. Yeah it gets spun a different a ton of different ways. Where looks like I'm getting hot? You take off the jacket. There might be the mushrooms this is probably the first phase of the trip It makes you sweat out some of the Music Johnson dead. Maybe some Marley. Whatever we'll get you Do you consider yourself hippie. Yeah what do you listen to I listened to a lot of Bob. You know a lot of rigging Music Gregory Isaacs. A lot of the Barrington Levy I just watched a movie the other day searching for sugarman you ever seen that yes. I'd Rigas s out having watched it. What's it about It's about this This guy in Detroit who great musician and Ends up talking about He's a superstar in during apartheid in South Africa and doesn't know it right. He had like a hit and he had no idea that he had a hit. That's crazy another part of the worst super famous super famous. David Hasselhoff did he go Germany over there and he gets off a plane. Yes yeah yes out searching searching sick so do you listen to that. Show that music to bring you down from being so fired up or do you find. It's kind of strange like as you are fierce competitor when you're on the court but you're like a very mellow dude off of it but I was just. I was raised like that you know. This isn't a gimmick. You know I I listen to this with my mother. And my dad listened to and You know they're hippies. So you know I mean this. We are speaking to your dad. I saw that video where he caught a fish with his hands. First of all. I'm calling bullshit. I feel like there was a line underneath the dock. Second of all if it was real. Tell me it was real because our producer. Hank thinks he can do the same thing. Hank you can't do shit. Stop what was it real? It's fucking real ways. He just jumped in and caught a fish with. "And why black roses, it comes from this amazing reggae, song dental ranking song by Barrington Levy, black roses in my garden. That's about the rarest flower that you never see. And so what does that mean in terms of what you're trying to cultivate. I think it's, I think it's a call out to the kind of individual that comes into the squad. They're super diverse. All walks of life and people who didn't even know each other before. And for some reason they. Something in them, draws them to the squat. I was rather uncharitably the other day saying that like some kind of like flaw in them brings them to the squad and someone's like, well, yeah, you have that to know. I'm a nice guy, but they're like left of center and someone definitely must have center. And a lot of times they've been people with like intense heartache that need healing and to since running practice sometimes offers that. I definitely not a mental health professional and have learned the hard way that creating that context people to explore their pain and come out on the other side is definitely not to be taken lightly. So that's something that I had to revisit and kind of. Think about it a little more chasing, but in the in that sense, it is sort of that kind of like pathos coming together to for for self improvement in the unproven of group community and that idea that the the black rose, the sprayer, flower needs to be taken care of her tended to with a little more attentiveness. Sure, right. That's beautiful man. It's a, it's an inspiration. It's an inspiration on tough when it's tough times. Like the song definitely very simply puts it out there for like for what it is about you gotta water it. And at the same time there is like, I mean, you had a bunch of people qualify for Boston, like it's legit training, so it's not just like, hey, let's look at the street murals. No, I laugh about it. Like I feel like if you come in black roses, like the weird thing again, you're like a bartender. You could come around black roses and then like sit down with Galen. Rupp talk about his training. I've seen it happen bizarrely you know? So you come through black roses, and just my perspective and what I bring is informed by. A handful of experiences and an full of people. I learned it from them and I person and that's what I have to bring. I'm not like the kind of like organized coach with like a file on everybody and like the top on the laptop charting out data. But like trying to feel, I'm trying to feel my way through. So can anyone show up or do you have to somehow to your profile kind of getting more and more out there? You probably have a lot of people probably too many people who want to be part of this, I think. So that's cool. But like does not even my concern. Something I don't ever pursue. My default mode is not returning emails. I I gotta gotta do do that. that. That's, you know, like you're not going to like crack a marathon by like emailing, you know, obviously I should be returning the emails. It's getting harder these days. What happened? This was the savior. Honestly, if you'd like, come up if you come out and show up if you find us. That's cool, right? So make it a little bit hard like make people have to work to figure out what's going on and if they really want it, they'll they'll figure it out. Yeah, the model is like, oh, cool. Oh, I love green tea zen. I want to join a monastery. We want to join a monastery. Fly to Japan, sit outside in the snow outside the monastery gates, rice days and wait. And then on the six day they're gonna open up the door and see if you're still there and be like, dude, who is trying to get into fight club that exactly. You know. So, yeah, it draws inspiration from like even my studies of East Asian religion, philosophy when I was in school and trips that China and Japan like, that's, that's kind of like what it is..

"Basically musically to kind of have both approaches and then also kind of have this certain cultural war. But Swain you know, the Stokes's and. You know that whole story of emigrating from the south and come into the promised land of north and then Bush masters father, you know, emigrating from Jamaica in coming to the promised land in New York. These two men that were best friends founding Harlan's paradise. And because of all these different things that happen splitting apart and death and betrayal in prodigal sons, returning for revenge and all these different elements that that we have. But then at the same time, I'll tell a musical story. So it's this, like, you know, the Stokes clans backstories for me is always been one of the most fun elements of of of the show. And if I, if I had the choice of being able to like spin off anything from Luke cage, I, I would love to do like like a a Stokes series. Because. Because I mean, just the whole premise of of like the early days problems paradise in the club and just, you know, all all all that whole world, you know, like if you could just do stoking the flames as the name of it doesn't even. You know. It would be one of those things because it's just that was the thing. It was interesting because when working with Marshall, he always had these questions about like, why is cotton out this way? Why am I doing this? Why am I doing that? And a forced us as a writing staff to think, okay, why is he doing this? What is that background? And as we began building up towards episode, seven of last season, you know, it was about all those little pieces and just like, you know those moments and then but but then once we actually did it, it was just like, oh my God, like the like the backstory in the and the feel of this whole world is just incredible. You know, I knew that units just being a blues fan. Like I, I knew that I wanted to at some point somewhere use John Lee hooker's on bad legacy, James, and the fact that in the calico is episode for episode, seven of last season one that we had that moment with that where that song play. As in the background, and as the song builds up, we build towards the murder of uncle Pete and cotton mouth pulling the trigger and the whole thing when you watch it as a seamless musical moment, it's just like, whoa, again, going back to the power in matching image with song that's the show. And that's the thing in terms of this season with season two, it's like Adrian Lee were. Like very specifically making what Adrian call symphonic reggae. Then at the same time, also making sure that we were using, you know, like we use under under under me, slink thing, Barrington Levy. In in episode, three, I think is only use that, and then it's and then of course we had matched Romeo's, you know, I taste the devil Lucifer. Some. I think some people still don't know. That's a real sample comes from. So. Like that. And then at the same time, you know, really trying to be authentic, not just to the music, but you know, Jamaicans have a very strong cultural pride that comes from the fact that you had the Maroons who were former slaves who are able to push out slave masters who able to, you know, fought so fiercely, they're, they're able to protect their own land in their culture and that culture resistance is present in the music because you go from the Maroons in the, you know, all the way to roots and Bob Marley, and, and you know, it's like that was one of the things that we wanted to do the show, which is the same way that season one was kind of like a Trojan horse into getting into the politics and history of Haarlem season to allowed us to also explore some of the politics history Jamaica in addition to further histories of Harlem all inside of a comic book show because which is why it's fun. Because you get to do superhero stuff. You get to do cultural, you know history and you get to have all these different moments. And then you just try to kind of mix it up in ways that that feel like fun and interesting as opposed to just a straight up history lesson. Right. And and it's interesting because you're saying about having season two Jamaican music. I know that for a fact, a lot of Jamaican records in additional to cool hark a lot of records were sampled for their great drums. A lot of a lot of a lot of Jamaica. Great, great. Reggae, songs start with a snare hit. Yeah, and that's taken by producer and put into something else. And so you've got all that produce hip hop in the first season. Second one's got it to got hip hop sexiest for sure. But a lot of this other type, one of my favorite moments is. An episode. Six. There's a showdown between bushmaster in Luke cage on on the high bridge in Harlem. My favorite one of my favorite scenes and we actually use the Lee scratch Perry. You know, version of the song is called sun's shining, but I think you know, like Zarrella version, it's called Tila rescue to rescue here. I like, you know, of course, I can't say it's, but you know, the thing is is like the, there's a rhythm in there's a rawness to scratch his version that when you hear it, it's just like, you see these, you see them kind of walking for this showdown. It's almost like like like like high noon western like it really has this resonates, you know, in a cool way. And so that's the whole thing is being able to to use that or even the way that that Stephen Marley, you know, seven like the. There's at acoustic moment that he has in the club with the club is empty. And you know, Tilda Gabrielle Dennis character walks in and there's a certain rhythm almost as if he's saying to her about what about her dilemma later on when you have the ascension of bushmaster without spoiling too much, and you have that other Stephen Marley song assist. There's no secret. I lift the music. You know, we we as a writing staff built for these moments, but I always, you know, all I always have in mind the musical underpinnings of of what we're trying to accomplish. It's an important part of the narration also easily. My favorite musical moment in the show I'm not gonna split. There's also a really great somebody. I did not expect to see in the very last scene at the very last episode did not expect to see that person for four. That was awesome. The thing is okay, fine. Is rocky. I mean, the reason that we can spoil that as we've already revealed. The fact that rock came is on the show. Okay. But the most interesting part about having came on the show besides, I mean, anytime you can get the Terrence Malick hip hop on a show. 'cause he's so allusive is great at the same time, he actually created a song about Luke cage. Yes. And so the fact that you know. Because we we have, we have so great. We have plans to kind of. Pre released to put the song out. Oh, great. Okay. Because I mean the song rocky date is hot. So that's coming out cars in the summer. I hope so because it's I mean of course, when you hear the are sound like to about Luke cage, it's like the the the the fourteen fifteen year old NBC is like it's still like like, no, I screwed of it. I definitely screwed if it just watching it, but I have to admit my favorite and most unexpected musical moment in the show because I was not familiar with this artist at all is the cover of the thrill is gone. Holy shit. Yeah. Christiane king fish. Oh my Lord. I'm so the whole way that happened is that like literally I saw him on YouTube, I think when he was fifteen, he's young. He's eighteen. Eighteen. Yeah, but he was fifteen or sixteen years old and I saw a YouTube link and because he saw somebody while these stories, you know, young blues plays the White House and he's he was sitting there casually, cat that looks like biggie Smalls and sounds like a fifty five year old blues at fifteen years old. Like, you know, heavy set, you know, big little kid. He's fifteen. He's playing a blue. Like, you know, he's, he's playing guitar ring a bell. Like Johnny be like, he's just like playing and and and you know, just being a long-term blues fan and hip hop critic and just not knowing the music, the music. I can kind of separate the wheat from the chaff, and there was no hype. This kid is one of the most talented performers I'd ever seen Lord, and I was just obsessed with them to the point where I literally thought about like, like, let me try to open a record label and see if I sign this kid because but then he just started doing more and more like blues festivals. You could see the aggression of his career online just on YouTube. So like Finally, I found out his name in there was finally Lincoln. I eat. I Email them like aside and I know this crazy, but. I created the Luke, Luke, you know, I would've loved to put him on the first season, but you know, just was really space. But I said, second season like this is one of the guys have to get. And luckily by then I'm, you know, he still represented by his mother, but also has another manager. You know, we were able to reach out and then you know it was funny because he tells the story. He was like, yeah, like house watching Luke cage. And then by the time, the episode, five got this Email. Lucchese like mom like this. He is a singular talent. He has an incredible rhythm section who likes from from the show like those guys don't get in his way at all. They're just putting it down and just letting this, I mean, well, because that's the thing you know, it wasn't that wasn't his real like, oh, it's not in the no, no. But the thing is they were just in the way in the pocket because the thing is is Adrian, and I'll le- when we when we recorded king fish in in LA in the studio, he laid the vocals and did the the solos I put a spell on new and the thrill is gone two hours forty, five minutes. He's song and then did sad live show you my phone after we get off play on a play, a play, the footage. It's just like it's insane. When you watch this kid like he really is the future. So to be able to have him on. And then at the same time also have Gary Clark, junior, Greg. You know, that wasn't thousand. All right. Some music in the show. I wanna move from us because we'll talk about music, especially because journalists. Like one aspect I think of the show is that I feel like in the first season of Luke cage and you, you brought this up when you were last on fan Bros. talking about preserving the elements of joy in your presentation of the story. I think this season has far fewer elements, joy. I think I think this is a meaner season. I think it's, it's sadder. It's it's more bitter complicated. It's it's a, it's a much darker. And I think that threw me in certain ways experiencing it. So was that something you went like? Did you go in? Realize we're going to tell it's not. It's not negative is not right, but it's like a. Negative story, because we're right now. You can show sound pretty fuck the second. The second season is is much darker. I ate hurt me to see some of what Luke goes through in the season, and that's without even getting into like some of the side stories of the characters and how they suffer and how that suffering is portrayed on. Well. It wasn't make Luke suffer that that that that that wasn't really a premise he's hurting for a bunch of the thing was, you know, it was interesting of the many criticisms of season one. The ones that really affected me the most and this isn't a good way was Anjelica Jade Bassin's like her summer, her episodic summaries of of the season the some of them. She loved some episode. She loves some were scathing, but they're so well written and just brilliant just in terms of their deconstruction of what we were doing, what we were attempting to do that at the very beginning of the season, I printed out all thirteen of them. And as a writing staff, we, you know, we, we read them went through them because I said of all, I read everything. I read every single comment. Like if you wanna holler at Twitter and get into little tweet battle like I'm for. All right. Like I mean, it's just you have to be like that because being a former critic, you develop a very thick skin. And so that's why it's fun. Like like someone a put in Luke cage and I'll go on Twitter and then I'll read some of the criticisms. And then I'll just I'll just like a little answer people.

"So. Yet to watch my son come into the world with a singular unity of a body mind and spirit made me reflect on in the last time I hit and that was the last time I. Had a similar unified field of of that much focus. And the only thing I could think of was when I used to be a runner and had been back in college, and so I started running the very next day one, the Brown, the park tulips around the park. And unfortunately, that led to marathoning pretty quickly not unlike not unlike twenty six days, not like twenty six lives around the park. I run a marathon, but you know, I could've kept it to five ks and just been cool, but I took it too far on then too deep. I would imagine not wanted to see where running my take him far over time. He realized that a running club could bring together his interest in music, art flaw, Sophy and sport. He could build a community of like minded runners found a black roses NYC. In the very end of two thousand twelve and kinda got started in the winter of January of twenty. Thirteen started with another woman here in New York City, and we kinda came out of this another running group that was sort of the progenitor of this amazing renaissance of urban running that we're seeing right now after a while there was so much excitement. And then at the dawn of social media, like social media kind of getting underway, there are so many questions about, does this work out, kind of deliver these gains and what should I eat before a race. And so I guess I found myself delivering the the little running experience that I had to like the community and then formalized it with a small membership based group that that is black roses today in what is the name come from? Comes from a dance hall. Gay song by Barrington Levy, like a digital dancehall saw on those. It's a classic super popular in the dance halls of Kingston, Jamaica, and New York, and other sort of crimen communities around the world. And it speaks about the rarest flower in the garden that needs care, but also is so rare that you probably almost never see it, you know.
