Trump To Select Amy Coney Barrett as Supreme Court Nominee
"This edition from NPR News. I'm Scott's time and we are expecting President Trump to announce Amy Cockney Barrett as his nominated. He was Supreme Court this afternoon. Judge Barrett sits on the seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Ah, in in Chicago, although she's in Indiana and served his clerk to just Saturnian, Scalia. She, of course, would fill the vacancy left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose life and career were honored at the court in the capital this week, and you will be buried next week at Arlington National Cemetery. Let's now welcome Michael McConnell of Stanford University law professor and former federal appeals court judge. Thanks very much for being with us, sir. It's a pleasure. I gather, you know, Amy Cockney Barrett. What's your estimation on her apparent nomination? What kind of justice you might be? Well, I do. Ah. She was a professor at Notre Dame Law School for about 15 years and then Now that capacity I knew her fairly well, she is. We're not personal friends, but I'm in admirers of both her academic work and her performance on the On the seventh circuit. Uh, she's I think a completely unsurprising nominee. Even her opponents recognized that she's extremely qualified, highly and intelligent, hardworking. What are personal Friends knows what in it. Fantastically warm, kind, considerate human being she is and she's I think she'll be an inspiration, especially toe working mothers like like my two daughters, because, and it's just seven Children, including Two adopted Children from Haiti. One right in the wake of the terrible earthquake and on almost everybody who knows of Amy has a story about just how and how she She is so kind and does just considerate things in ways that no one whatever I know about not publicly, but just on a cz, a wonderful warm human being. Let me ask you about some of the public stuff, though, because you're a former U. S appeals court judge and, um I wonder if you've taken note of any particular rulings that she's had the chance to make in her time on the bench. And not quite three years as an appellate judge. He's written 100 opinions, which Dad and itself is pretty impressive. That's Andi. They are. You know, I've not read all of them, but I've read quite a few of them and they're consistently Love of a kind of restrained, very lawyerly of fashion sheep. She clerked for Justice Scalia, who was a brilliant writer, she doesn't write like Scalia. I'm You know, for better or worse. Her opinions are not very rhetorical. There. Ah, rigorous. They are much more low key. Er than that on DH. You know her, and they're just they're consistently conservative, but mainstream conservative. I don't think There's not an extremist bone in her body does does she have opinions? That might surprise some of her supporters every now and then? Ah, every now and then. Ah! Of course, no one really knows where any judge is going to come out on every and maybe we should remind ourselves calling someone a conservative jurist doesn't mean they will always vote a certain way, right? That's right. And the modern legal conservative movement is little different from conservative politics because the conservative legal movement is really mostly about having a more restrained Roll for judges that they ought to read the Constitution modestly with humility, not reading their own preferences into it, And that generally means leaving legislatures and the Congress to make most Democratic choices rather than having the court be like a super Legislature. Stanford law Professor Michael McConnell. Thanks so much for being with us, sir. Thank you.

The Supreme Court Fight
"President. Trump will reportedly nominate Amy Cockney Barrett, a favorite of social conservatives to be the new Supreme Court justice. The president's decision to be officially revealed at the White House later today. Has been confirmed to the BBC's US partners, CBS News and other U S media. She would replace the Progressive Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died last Friday. Nomination will set off a bitter Senate fight to get her confirmed as November's White House election looms. Our correspondent in California is David Willis. I asked him about Amy Cockney Barris Bad is a devout Catholic. The mother of seven and assuming her nomination is confirmed by the U. S Senate, she will be the youngest justice on the Supreme Court bench. At the age of 48 was seen as a front runner to succeed Ruth Beta Ginsburg, but she is nonetheless the ideological opposite. Of the woman that she is expected to replace. Miss Ginsberg was the leader of the liberal wing of the court and unequivocally pro choice. Of course, Ms. Barrett has called abortion in moral and since being appointed to the Court of Appeals by President Trump. 2017. She has twice ruled in favor of restricting access to abortion. Hence, liberals see her appointment is a potential threat to row versus Wade. That's the landmark 1973 ruling, which legalized abortion nationwide here. A lot of Republicans are very happy. Yes, Republicans on deed. The president's political advisors hope that this election will energize his conservative political base. Evangelicals, religious conservatives In particular Democrats. For their part, I think there may be hoping that this could inspire liberal voters to take to the polls in defense of amongst other things, Roe vs Wade in the past week. In fact, they pull several polls. Have shown that most Americans, including many Republicans, believe that the next Supreme Court justice should be selected by whoever wins the presidential election here in November, and not by Donald Trump. Before then, on that subject, though, there has been some speculation. Hasn't there that if the result of the November elections is disputed legally, that possibly this new lineup of judges could intervene on the president signed. Well, that's absolutely right. Bear in mind that last other justices have been improved in presidential election years. None has been voted on. After July And four years ago, Senate Republicans refused to even consider then President Obama's nomination on precisely those grounds that should be left to whoever Was chosen as the next president, but as well as key issues such as abortion and immigration, universal health care, the US Supreme Court could, as you say, be called upon. To adjudicate the outcome off this forthcoming presidential election. Should the result be disputed, as they're now seems every chance that it will be President. Trump has repeatedly claimed, of course, that the Democrats that trying to steal the election he seems Poised to challenge any result. Really, that doesn't declare him the winner, and this week he refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses, and that's why And he's made this quite plain. He wants toe rush his nominee through the Senate by Election Day. How large in the psyche of American voters do you think the lineup of the Supreme Court is The Supreme Court is important, whether or not it actually masses a great deal to the average voter is another matter. I mean, they shape large parts. Off life here and, of course, they are appointed for life and its therefore significant that Amy Cockney Barents confirmation would shift The center of gravity on the Supreme Court considerably to the right, giving conservatives six off the nine seats, possibly for many decades, and the replacement of a liberal icon move played against the with an outspoken conservative like Amy. Tony Barrett has been called the sharpest ideological swing in nearly three decades as Faras, the highest court in the land is concerned, so the potential implications of this are significant. How much They actually count as Faras Day to day living. His concern of Americans here I think is another matter. The

Mark Meadows Speaks with Reporters
"Today outside the White House chief of staff Mark Meadows spoke to reporters for a little over 10 minutes on issues, including the replacing Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U. S. Supreme Court. The president said he needs nine Justice Supreme Court election challenge because he asked me of potential nominees how they will vote. No, he hasn't. Actually I've been in those interviews and I could tell you it would be inappropriate for us Ask those kinds of questions. I think his comments were more just an indication that we need a a full panel on the Supreme Court. You don't want to ever provide a a situation where there could be Tie a 44 ty not to suggest that this should be a 44 tie. I think it should be more of a unanimous decision on some of the facts that I have seen. But obviously I'm not a justice. They would have to hear That case would be highly inappropriate. We wouldn't want to ask a question that would perhaps for some potential nominee to recuse themselves. Should they have to hear this waste but with him out there, saying he needs to have this justice because there might be a challenge. That create bags of a conflict of interest for whoever you well, I know no more than any other judge that has been nominated by Donald Trump or Barack Obama or anybody else. I mean to suggest that just because they were nominated by somebody that they would have an inherent bias, I think we've seen from the court rulings already by the Supreme Court. They're an independent body, and they don't necessarily vote the way that you might think they should. I can tell you that That particular issue is eyes, Probably the least of potential nominees. Worries that it makes you effective profits were kind of expecting a second question. The president will have confidence. I can't speak to the second question in terms of the confidence in director Ray, I can tell you that I was Very, very disappointed to see some of the text messages and emails that came out yesterday. And some of the discovery that was put for from my previous job is a member of Congress. I know that I've asked for exactly those kinds of documents and never got them on that was under the previous director and also under this director on so it is time for direct array to quit in my mind playing footsie with transparency and Deliver those documents. The second part of your question was more that I think. Well, I think if past is prologue, I mean, we've got all kinds of indications that the Democrats are. We're going to use the next 30 days to try Tio shame. Whatever nominee we put four for their faith for their record for who they are, and Troubling. I mean, we've got it. We see even today that way don't have AH continuing resolution passed because Chuck Schumer is playing games with procedural aspect based on a potential nominee. We took down a election security hearing today because Chuck Schumer's playing games that's minor. That's that's child's play compared to what we will see over the next 30 days, But we're prepared for the fight. What we will see is, I think Be thorough Vetting but hopefully done in expeditious way way. I didn't say it was Judge Merrick Isa. Good leading question. You can say that the president's confidence in director, I haven't talked to him about it. Well, I can tell you that we have a number of people that continue to serve at the pleasure of the president that he has different degrees of confidence in on DSo Tio directly speak to that question. Without actually talking to him would be inappropriate about healthcare. Big announcement guys today the president wanted to executive orders now the U. S government policy that preexisting conditions should be protected. Forced the affordable care act right now is that five lost? What are Americans make policy of already existing protection? Well, Peter, you as you know, there's a court case going through as it relates to the affordable care act and what the president Wanted to make sure I was clear not once not twice. But now a third time in signing that executive order is to make sure that preexisting conditions are covered that insurance companies can price people out of their coverage just because of the illness that they have or could have come down with, And it was just a commitment and say that if the court strike that down any future legislation under a Trump administration would guarantee that preexisting conditions are covered. And so From his perspective, It's just trying to make sure that the message is clear. He's been very clear in the Oval Office, You know, Sometimes the campaign rhetoric in the ads that get place do not match the private conversations in the Oval. White House chief of staff Mark Meadows outside the White House earlier today. Scepticism of some because obviously the president president for four years, But they say that it's that they should be protected his only a policy. It's not along. We've never seen a plan. Peter, this is not your first rodeo. And you know how Congress has the inordinate and unbelievable ability to obstruct, especially when you have a divided Congress. I don't know of a single Democrat that would be willing to take down on Obama care piece of legislation haven't served in the car. It's almost like they're Holy grail. Now they'll admit there's all kinds of flaws and all kinds of problems with it that they won't fix, but they won't repeal it. And so it's all about making sure that the message to the American people gets covered. One of the interesting things that no one seems to be picking up on too much. Well, is the $200 copay that's actually is going it is coming from the savings from the executive order on most favored nation big farmer would push back on that. Pushback on that, But we're going to be able to save tens of billions of dollars were actually going to use a demo. Ah, demo for to be Medicaid CMS demo project that will actually allow us to use about $7 billion to pay for those. But those will be offset with savings from from Pharma as we enacted most favorite nation, money way have we have a 10 year? Window on that for those savings, and we're actually working on those final rules. Those proposed rules now to put forth But just like the Obama administration used the same program in the previous administration were going to use it now to make sure that seniors get the benefit of those savings today and that they don't have to wait for those you already prepping initial Supreme Court nominee for confirmation questions and Wilder wise guy sort of Urfa. Person around Capitol Hill with numbers on DSO in terms of prepping any particular nominee that we have. No, we have not started prepping those. We won't until the nomination is full on I see me mean by wise guy could be wise guy or a gal, a cz, a Sherpa, and so as we wait guys in a plural and generic sense I would have seen on so as we look at that. I don't know that we'll be using Sherpa as much we've been working with leader McConnell, in a very direct way of had daily conversations would leader McConnell a number of senators because of covert and the inability of senators to actually engage more on a office by office faces? We're looking at modifying that if there is a need for a Sherpa, we've actually have asked the leader for some recommendations. There were certainly open to that. But I think next week what you'll see Is Patsy polonium myself, making sure that we make the nominee available to a wide variety of senators. Political question. You aware that Amy Kony's merit worked on foot vs board and you know what was her role? Apparently, she was in Florida working for Stuart Levey. According to her question. Yeah, I I'm certainly aware of every nominees record, whether it's Amy Comey, Barrett or anybody else. I can't say I don't think that this is a hanging Chad problem. This's more a mail in ballot. Unsolicited mail in ballot with delays in collection of those ballot issue. Hopefully, we're not gonna have a hanging Chad problem when my last question was president, felling three of your quote, By the way, I think you owe guide okay. Yeah, that sounds like a good stand. Wise wise guys. Okay, campaign. Apparently, the RNC are telling Republican voters essentially that they need To vote absentee necessary. Isn't that sort of out of line with the president's message going to be male in front? And I mean, I think absentee ballots if they've got a normal process, perhaps auntie ballots like we had in North Carolina. I don't know that that process is one that is new or different. I can't speak to every state. All I can speak to is North Carolina, but but I can't. Say you that solicited ballads with absentee requests or certainly something that has been the norm eyes the unsolicited ballots mailing to ever registered voter that he has a bigger problem with and that most Americans should have a problem with that theory is she's been radio programming from Friday. Well, I don't know That's how I'm basing the acceptance. Of the election here is a valid point here is what we want to make. Sure of is that laws are not changed by a few judges making it like in North Carolina consent decree. Don't change the laws that are on the books just so that you can extend the election time. Most states, North Carolina and others have a very long time for them to be able to cast their ballots either in person or by mail leading up to November. 3rd s O to suggest that we should have November 3rd. It's a week plus two weeks like has been mentioned in some states is not. There is not something that I think is necessary. The other is is when you have secretaries of states in a partisan manner, potentially certifying election results. We want to make sure that they do this on on away that's credible and they can with stand the scrutiny of of the public eye on allow a partisan process to get in. I don't know if you're following what's happened. In North Carolina. But it's very troubling where you have a a Democrat group, filing suit against a Democrat, Board of elections and then doing a consent decree. That's not what the American judicial system is all about. It's in my opinion gaming the system. Hopefully, that judge will not go ahead with that consent decree but is very problematic and it disenfranchises voters whether they're Republican, unaffiliated or Democrat. We want to make sure every vote counts. But We want to make sure that on ly one vote count ceremony, I I'm I'm assuming that we were invited. I don't know about the best. You know the invite list. Obviously, yesterday we wanted to make sure before he left town. He paid respects and so way actually adjusted his schedule so that he could do that. Yesterday I travelled with him and, as you know, way made that a priority. Thanks, guys. White House Chief of staff Mark Meadows outside the White House this morning,

Amy Coney Barrett 'to be picked by Trump for Supreme Court'
"Donald Trump will be announcing his supreme court pick on. Saturday which means that he already knows that the individualism according to sources close to Donald trump his selection will be judge Amy Coney Barrett Their York Times makes a point to mention that she would be the least experienced supreme court nominee however she is a favorite among conservative politicians and conservative voters because of her Christian background but also more importantly and I think this gets left out in a lot of the analysis in the media. She also would immediately invalidate the affordable care act she's on the record. Saying that whereas you know the thing that people seem to be more focused on right now is Roe v Wade which you know obviously I don't WanNa be naive and just assume that she won't touch Roe v Wade but she is on the record saying that she believes in the precedent when it comes to reproductive rights even though she as a devout Catholic disagrees with abortion and all of that but Emma I wanted to get your thoughts. We're talking about this a little bit during the break talk a little bit about what this means for the affordable care, act? Certainly. So that's my concern too. I mean we're both women. We obviously have concerns about our reproductive health but I think there is a hesitance in terms of justices overturning that precedent because of the ripple effects and how massive and that it would be I feel like it's just more of a political talking point for Conservative politicians to score points than it is a judicial reality. That's the only thing saving us here. What should concern everybody is that she's forty eight years old she has a history of pro-corporate positions that side with the with the employer against employee etc I believe and she's sided against. I'm reading some of it here. Things in gun rights she descended in a decision that would disarm felons for example, after they came out of prison, she's pretty extreme when it comes to those issues but for the affordable care. Act's guys if it's six to three if she gets through and it's that solidly conservative, they're going to do away with the affordable care act and then that's a conservative basically supermajority for decades at that point say ideally, we got the Progressive President in twenty twenty four who wants to put Medicare for all through. That's dumb. That's what concerns me most about these decisions are yes. The Supreme Court's been pro-corporate for a very long time for the Romney says, we're a center right country and the courts been leftist for awhile talk to him about Bush. Gore in citizens united whatever. But but but yeah, that's what scares me the most about. This is the complete mixing of any legislation that comes through that could be progressive. That's appealed Conservatives Appeal Appeal Appeal go the Supreme Court and they know. It's just going to be overturned. INCORPORATIONS can have a field day in big Pharma will be doing great. Yeah I am definitely worried about this. You know representative Ro. Khanna introduced a bill that would limit the. Time Supreme Court justice could serve on the Supreme Court to eighteen years. I don't know where that piece of legislation is GonNa go but I I do think that it's important that you mentioned her age as you just did and how. Her influence on the court will have a lasting ramifications on on this country really and yeah, the pro-corporate angle is something that just seems to get lost in the fray lost in the analysis and I'm glad that we're talking about it in a story that will cover later donald trump signed more ridiculous phony executive orders alleging that he's protecting people with preexisting conditions. The truth is those executive orders constitutionally speaking have no teeth but what it does is it messages to his voters that don't worry don't don't be frightened of the repeal of the affordable care act because signed executive orders. They're not going to do anything, but you know it's just enough to cover his ass while also simultaneously causing great harm to honestly all Americans because anything could be considered a pre existing condition. If you tested positive for cove it, that's considered a pre existing condition. So this is going to have. A damaging effect on so many people in this country I wanna read a quote from from this piece in the New, York? Times it's by Aaron. Who's president for the old Alliance for Justice a liberal group. She says, Amy Coney Barrett Meets Donald Trump's to litmus tests. She has made clear that she would invalidate the affordable care act and take healthcare away for millions of people and undermine. A woman's reproductive freedom. Again, I'm not entirely sure that the Supreme Court would overturn Roe V. Wade I know that there's a lot of fear about that. I understand that fear a lot of my fear again has to do with You know corporate shoes that make it to the Supreme Court and what is very likely to happen to the affordable care act at this point and remember the Supreme Court did strike. The healthcare mandate, that's an important part of the affordable care act. That's what kept premiums low, and you know when they undid that, of course, premiums immediately shot up and so we'll see how this all plays out, but it is pretty terrifying.

US Supreme Court: The possible nominees to fill vacancy
"Of you paid attention to who the possible nominees are. People are talking about Amy Kuney Barrett and Barbara Lago do you know but these judges and can you tell us anything about them? Sure I mean there. It's almost certain to be Amy Coney Barrett. Just because trump has generally deferred to actually others throughout his four years especially when it comes to the higher court, the Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, and there's really a pretty big consensus around amy. Barrett, there some talk that like trump would be helped in Florida if he went the other way. But I'll be I'll be very shocked if it's not her now she is you know a a more or less. Predictable right wing jurist. I think her her confirmation. We'll have enormous effects just because I think it's clear. She's a reliable vote to overturn Roe v Wade where. Probably, in her absence, they would just continue cutting the meaning of that precedent down. You know because even as of today it's it's been made so hard to get an abortion in the south that weather would wanNA speak of. A meaningful federal right to abortion is already open to question in in many other areas. She'll just confirm that drift to the supreme, court in this liberal direction, which actually some of the Democrats on on the panel have have kind of colluded and in taking it toward in recent decades. So the addition of one person is rarely like catalytic or transformative. Maybe on this one issue of abortion, it would actually lead five of the justices without chief justice, Roberts to overturn Roe v Wade, which might not happen otherwise and I'm not suggesting that's not a big deal. It is, but probably in most other areas of law, it would just be like the same more of the same except more. So so so what are the different ways that you see this playing out Let's say this happened than Biden is elected He then gets to replace I assume the next soon to retire Justice Briar I believe, right? I mean. We. Assume that Clarence Thomas would try to outlast Joe Biden in the same way that Ruth Ginsburg tried to outlast Donald. Anything could happen right and you happen and of course, we should probably talk about interesting relationship between Biden and Clarence Thomas. How much of a? Let's go there. How much did Biden in neighb- ball Clarence Thomas is Supreme Court. Or empower him as a sitting Supreme Court justice while he was instrumental as as the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I mean you know we can get personal. But in we've all seen, you know whatever the you know the Netflix's reenactment of this level. But you know the truth is that Biden you know maybe like all of us only more so again has been a prisoner of his time all the way along and at that moment The He he responded you know as part of the like con, the comedy of the Senate required. You know he hung out with these other white men and they decided that this wasn't a big enough deal and there was deference even in a democratically controlled Senate to the you know right of the president to nominate a supreme. Court justice when a seat is vacant we've totally given up those those norm sense really as a country, but you know within the Senate to. You know I definitely think he sh- his treatment of Anita Hill is part of the record that we ought to think seriously about it's mainly testament to changing norms in the country about gender and about sexual violence and so I but I. so but I would kind of broaden out to less about his own limitations which may be substantial and more about you know. Where we've come why really starting with Robert bork before through the Clarence Thomas Nomination, and through our time we've we've really converted national politics into like these psycho dramas around filling supreme court seats, and again, the reason is not having to do with any of these individuals Biden Thomas. it's more with what's at stake, which is policy making authority over all Americans and it it is. It's. It's hard to argue that this particular institution auto habit

"Another episode with Stephen Barrett? Listen to the other ones. Him and I got off the real. Sometimes we get a little while, and this one is no different. It gets this one I. Think is actually one of the most wild ones that we've had. But you know it's it's also very I think it's pretty philosophical and informational gets a little political and I know Stephen I don't think he would mind.

"Or a mathematician okay and we are backed the wells cast my name's wells that's weird on the wiser that way but it's happening anyways episode one of the show is he ear and I'm so excited to have on the wells cast Gabby Barrett how are you good how are you doing pretty good I did this whole interest so about what the show is because it originally was something else and then our like switching formats on it so I kind of want to give you the rundown rookes you understand and then we can go forward okay it's always interesting to me to find out how people got to where they are now like everyone knows that Bree Larson is you know is in marvel you know and she's a famous actress but like how to get there that's what's interesting to me because I think they wanna do that what was the path that she took to get to that place and so this is kind of an origin story podcast right won the find out how the hell you got to where you are right now so obviously we can delve into American idol and stuff but I wanNA start at the beginning where did you come from some originally from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania yeah he ain't represent no so you don't sound like you're from Pittsburgh average family's from West Virginia and my husband's from Texas and sell I've been around country folk for a while now they have picked up on it a little bit but I really started singing when I was about nine years old in a Gospel Choir that was about fifteen minutes from my house and me my it was my dad who would always take me back and forth the Gospel Choir and a group of women just really really worked with me every Saturday after school I would always go there and they've really shown me what that was capable of doing with my voice so originally R. and B. was what I loved I loved one in women that could sing really good live like aretha Franklin Whitney Houston Patti Labelle Etta James all women that could really sing live and pave the way for a lot of female singers it but I always I also loved country a lot and I think you get a lot of influence from what your parents play around you like in the car like my dad was the rocket armband and my mom was the country and so I love both of them so I started singing at that church stayed there for about two years and then I started touring and doing shows when I was eleven I show when I was eleven yeah I remember it was with my cousin Jason she doesn't have an arm but he can like Ripa guitar like insane in so he he played my first show with me and he actually I just took him on a show I just open for Toby Keith recently took him on that show also thank you so I started touring at eleven and then for those six years really really grinded away so before her title had been doing it for a while good six years of trial and error before idlewild around and then oh seventeen and producer scouted me from American idol and asked me to do this show and I didn't know what was gonNA come from it but I just night at it now let's see what comes from listen so I ended up third place in two thousand eighteen now year and a half and talking to you will I love this every every time we do this I feel like everyone just brought like runs through their entire history as I go back a little bit okay so you did like a lot of gospel stuff in the beginning but did you come from a very religious family my entire family's actually Catholic but they weren't ever super-duper religious I did grow up with you know my dad talking about God and stuff and might family's Catholic but I just informed ammunition now so he they go to church sometimes and things like that but how we actually got to this church does fifteen minutes from my house was my dad went to a high school football field to go work out quote unquote like walk the track in the staff's like to get your stuff send and I was a little girl and there were women that were like working out at the this at this on the steps and stuff and so long story short we end up running into them and everybody starts talking and he goes oh my daughter can sing in there like oh we're at a church we church why don't you bring her down harassing for the pastor he was like okay so we went down to the church and I met the pastor and he's really good at playing Pinault and he says okay so a little Birdie told me can sing a hymn leave me I was just starting and so how old were you at this moment I was nine nine and so he's like what you WanNa say for manuals like I'll sing man in the mayor about Michael Jackson Michael Jackson and so he's like okay so he starts Annette and I start saying in turns around like halfway through was like Oh you can sing saying it so and then I stayed there for two years and his wife and in hoboken just would work with me constantly and he would always challenged me with big songs is on the Sparrow and he'd be like you think you can do it and I'm like yeah thanks so I always love challenging myself when I was younger too so it's it's been a good ride okay so at nine you run into some people while you're getting your steps in on your own I bet did you read like seeing a lot but like your dad knew you could sing but like he would play You know Aretha in the car and you'd sing along or were you like doing voice lessons and stuff before that I never voice lessons only the church and so everything besides that was a gift for Lord but I mean yes he would always play music grownup so like I said earlier he he liked the rock in the arm be he really liked music doc like really really liked music rhythm music the melodies and stuff and so growing up I just naturally found a gravitation to it that I really liked I always loved music especially Old Music Tale and so that's what really got me into like the R&B liking female voices and then it just turned into Mace I was singing Adele ran family some day when rolling deep adjust come out I was singing that in the house that's the first video may singing was a Christmas truce Christmas time he said Gary Cummings front door and I still Darren he said Sing Song you were singing in the car and I started saying it and he just was like something here and then shortly after we met those women up at that football fan and then started at the church so you hang out at the Church Sing Gospel two years and then you decide to live a life of sin then go on the sonos eleven at this restaurant place and there was like ten people in there was that something you want to start going on the road because I will when I had went to church we went to a few other churches to sing in front of people and I remember always when he would challenge me with songs and stuff I would stand up in the church enough to sing in front of people so for me from doing it so long I'm like okay these are the same type of people I want to sing in front of more people and it was just a natural thing of let's do shut Lemme Lemme start to sing in front of other and see what kind of goes on if I have something here and I did and it it's just it's crazy to look back on that and look now and it's it's been cool because you tour once you turn it eleven for seven years up till American idol what happens with school in that time period right so I went to private goal all the way up until tenth grade tenth grade rolled around I mean 'cause in private school you can only miss up where I'm from Uganda Miss Up to twenty nine days I was twenty and every single year so just from like performing in my teachers despise may because I'd I'd be the one behind all the projects all the homework all everything I'd have to help me a lot but intense grade I or I'm sorry in the beginning of eleventh grade I went on online school in PA cyber so eleventh that's like obviously your father knew that you had some some big gift but I can't I can't imagine your parents being like all right let's just roll the dice on this I was really fortunate very blessed to have a dad that was that was on the same page knew and understood and was there with may from a very young age we had sat down and out of conversation just talked about like this is plan A. B. and C. you're not going to go to college like you're GonNa make some of the is what we're GonNa do and just invested everything into it and it you know it makes me really happy now to finally start to see things picking up after such a long time and after such a grueling process Sanderson hard it is to make it and do it and those business and so it's it's it makes me proud to make them proud just gonNa keep going because I feel like they deserve everything as bonkers because if when I was like telling my parents was like I'm going to be a radio DJ they're like that's the worst decision you can who had more confidence you or your dad in your potential in your career I would definitely feel it back to my dad because being how like I was like ten or eleven when we have this conversation talked about he was the one that saw at first so he was on that was gassed up about let's go she has something we're GonNa push we're going to do this and so he was always that person that kind of that would pick me back up if I got low or something like that and be like and we did that too that's why we were really really close in one of eight to so there's quite a few kids in my group but I was definitely the closest with my dad out of everybody just we spent so much time learn so many things together and working together on thanks so he's been a champion for me one of eight one of eight I'm what five and I think my family's knowing so I can't imagine May you hate them coming to all the glory of being the baby the baby yes the baby gets the village it now but she actually she actually got the Cyprus and she I I got all of them because they I mean my siblings champs they really are because so many people would ask me like do you feel like you're in the shadow or anything like because of how much was going into my career orange music and stuff and they were always they were always on the road with me doing stuff with me and so they've been champs over the years and I'm so thankful for that you mentioned it was at your cousin who's stops I'd say from your wrist up about six inches that's where his arm kind of stopped so he has like five inches from his elbow down and it just it kind of turns into like he is like a little nub on the end of his arm and he straps a plastic piece around it and puts his pick in it and it's like ridiculous how good he is at guitar s amazing Yeah it's it's it's wonderful so yeah he displayed A few more shows May I have a few guitar players that I played with but I wanted to make sure that you know he came on their own plates more and I gotta think that I mean seeing him on stage with you has got to be inspiring for you because you know that can't be an easy thing to overcome or not you know right that's yet absolutely that's amazing to me that he stuck with that in does it in front of people and you know he he's actually a music teacher too so he teaches other kid.

"In nineteen sixty seven twenty one year old syd Barrett was in the midst of mental turmoil as his vision helped pink Floyd rocket into the spotlight he felt hamstrung by the pressures of fame he had never wanted to be the spokesman men of her anything but now he was being heralded as the preeminent voice in the English underground he reacted by cutting himself off from the outside world and self medicating with drugs primarily. LSD By September of nineteen sixty seven sids disinterest in the band and and the demands of the music industry were reaching a fever pitch even so the record label which had cancelled some of the band's live dates a month before four put the group back on demanding touring schedule. Sid responded by messing with the tuning on his guitar before performances until he was is just hacking at a pile of rattling strings on another occasion. He called the band into a recording session and taught awesome new song entitled. Have you got it yet. Every time his bandmates nail part of the tune sid would play the part again differently claiming they had gotten it wrong. At other concerts he would simply stand limp an empty. I'd endlessly plucking single note on his guitar. While the rest of the band performed despite the difficulties the record executives were determined termine to squeeze every last ounce of productivity out of sit in the band they booked in American tour for Pink Floyd in November of nineteen sixty seven predictably the shows were a disaster sid was more resolved than ever to opt out of the performances. According to one of their managers managers at one GIG sit did nothing but blow into a referee's whistle still he also had moments of lucidity depending on his mood and he dutifully went on Dick Clark's talk show in slog through the kind of boring patronizing questions he hated the most it seemed he wasn't entirely incapable capable of fulfilling his obligations but he was getting fed up with the dog and pony show suits attitude stood in stark contrast to the rest of his bandmates bandmates in England. They had shared his annoyance at the cheesy interviews ungrateful crowd in America. They were invigorated. Did they wanted to cross over like the Beatles. They all felt they were on the verge of something big and they couldn't understand why sid was so disillusioned loosened after all but ruined pink. Floyd's first concert in America by standing limp and quiet on stage the rest of the band realized his behavior behavior had crossed the line. He wasn't just having a laugh any longer. He really couldn't stand any of it sids managers and bandmates. I tried to confront him but none of it did any good after several bad concerts in a row they're manager cancelled the rest of the American tour. You're at the end of November nineteen. Sixty seven apparently the band had deluded themselves into believing sids its problems were unique to his frustrations with America. When Pink Floyd came back to England they went on tour alongside Jimi Hendrix and a host of other bands and later their managers claimed they were concerned for sids mental health after the disaster across the pond but if they truly cared what about state of mind they probably wouldn't have immediately booked him for a seven band tour. It was a demanding schedule pink. Floyd was expected expected to play two shows a night for two weeks straight but the band went through with it including to an extent the most he could bother to do most nights was to show up and chambal onto the stage high on hallucinogens by the end of the sixteen night tour. He looked like a Husk husk of his former self. His formerly delicate features bright eyes disappeared replaced by hollow cheekbones in a menacing stare. His behavior became just as frightening as his appearance. Several close friends claim claim he became physically abusive toward his girlfriend. Lindsay Corner Linzie however claims this is untrue but according to a longtime friend of Sids David Gale said withhold Lindsey down and tickle her until she couldn't take it anymore. He also banged her head against the floor while she screamed for him to. Stop David was so alarmed that he arranged for Sid to see a psychiatrist. He set up an appointment but when the time came sid refused fused to go as for the rest of friends some claim that they took his erotic behavior as a sign of his creative genius since most famous creatives are known for rebelling against the norms of society rule breaking takes on a special mystique for artists for those who admire breaking breaking the mold it becomes difficult to know where to draw the line as a result disturbing behavior perpetrated can go unchecked those who see value in pushing some boundaries worry about being seen as hypocrites for putting their foot down with a creative leader. This is one reason as in so-called visionaries are sometimes allowed to get away with acting inappropriately still some believe that sits behavior could still improve uh inbetween concerts where he played limply and appeared vacant there were flashes of creativity he could still electrify audiences with passionate and inventive playing for example the band appeared on the British show top gear on December thirty first nineteen sixty seven the performance vince was solid and featured none of sids disruptive antics still on the off days. It was clear that Sydney did help yet few intervene for fear that it might ruin his creative process. This mindset was actually really representative of everything said had been rebelling against. He resented being the voice of the underground. He didn't like all the attention and admiration Morais Shin he got from being viewed as an Avatar of creativity and yet the notion of an artist ahead of his time was exactly the image the record label cultivated stories about pink floyd's genre transcending cutting edge music were encouraged. The light shows psychedelic paraphernalia. Paraphernalia and lyrical experimentation were employed as evidence that syd Barrett the eccentric musician was a genius for many any in the Hippie community where sid spent most of his time he was an ideal to strive toward some thought it would be a sign of conformity to ask ask said to get help. They didn't want to discourage a great artist from being himself. The record label had no such problems confronting said but but instead of getting him help they decided it would be easier to simply replacing. He was already beyond help. After a series of clandestine talks with the rest of the band it was agreed that sid had become too unprofessional and unreliable at the end of nineteen sixty seven they recruited an acquaintance named David Gilmour as a replacement guitarist in January of the following following year pink floyd played several gigs including both sid and Gilmore then without any explicit conversation. The rest of the band just stopped inviting said to the gigs. They never even told him that he had been replaced. Naturally he caught on on Rick Right. The band's keyboardist was sharing an apartment with said and he frequently snuck out to perform without him. There was only so all along the rules could be sustained at some point. The band entertained the idea of keeping sit on a songwriter and using Gilmore to play his parts parts during concerts but that proved untenable sid would no longer even show up to recording sessions in April of nineteen sixty eight eight. The record label officially announced that Syd Barrett had been replaced at twenty two years old. He was unceremoniously cut out out of the band. He'd helped launched to fame. It's difficult to say what sids reaction was. As always he kept his feelings to himself he made no public pronouncements and remained on generally friendly terms with the rest of the band. It's possible he felt that parting was for for the best he later expressed. That Pink Floyd hadn't achieved what he set out to do with his music. Whatever he was feeling he was expected to work through through his distress. In May June and July he was called to the studio to record some solo material his managers hoped he could find success on his own without the demands of a touring band holding him back during these sessions sid recorded his first attempts at what would would become some of his most well known material including the Song Octopus but all in all it was slow going sid was now now incoherent much of the time one moment he would be lucid and engaged and the next he would fall into a pit of sallow depression and refused fused to speak to anyone his girlfriend. Lindsay broke up with him. Due to the severe mood swings one of his managers Peter Jenner said that by this is point they were treating sid with kid gloves. They arranged for friends to make him dinner and tried their best to be overly conciliatory. When he missed.

"Multicolored. Lord lights came up around a small stage as the slow psychedelic music started to build the crowd thrums with anticipation. They headlined up around the block to witness a revolution in music. They'd all been told that pink floyd was like nothing ever heard before doc it was all thanks to the band's mysterious frontman the shovel genius who stood not in the spotlight but somewhere in the shadows was off to the side as Syd Barrett started to strum his guitar. The audience cheered but as the lights passed over said the audience stopped his cold vacant stare was unsettling he held his guitar loosely as if he barely knew how to use it and then he sang it was more like other worldly moans then coherent lyrics. This was nothing close to how he sounded. Did on the records he was only plucking a single droning note over and over some thought it was a joke at first but he just kept going aw the crowd was confused then worried then belligerent. This wasn't what they'd paid to see. A few frustrated traded fans tossed their beer bottles at the stage in protest. The band was unfazed. This had become the status quo syd. Sid Barrett was losing his grip but as long as the crowds kept coming the show had to go on.

And then I saw him later on at the palace out here, the club famously James woods owned in the movie with Jeff bridges and what's her name about the football player. And the Phil Collins had a big. It's a good against all odds against all that was the club famously. One of my first legitimate gigs was doing stand up there like an opener for some sort of like thanksgiving thing or something. And the the guy, cable who was visine agai Zima guy. And the guy looked back when it comes up rarely often on this show. Yeah. That's the best job ever since the whatever guy flow from the insurance guy, right Bryson guy, sprint. Sima guy knows got the granted monitoring v. guy. Gig is the like e. trade guy. It's the guy who sits and talks to people about their finances and looks really Ernest as a beard and his sitting there with the fucking loser Cup on there going. Well, we've worked for a long time, but we've only saved eighty nine thousand dollars. I know that doesn't sound like a lot and he says, hey, that's your money. It is a lot. And then he inexplicably talking to people about their finances and looking very concerned took a long time I want that guys can't can that guy. Can somebody puts them kiddie porn on his computer and then all ranger raid and then I can slide in there. I've got a question talking about Zima Zima install on right and Dickey from the Boston's right. Nineteen ninety seven. What. I played a gig at that. They're now I saw the boss tones there before I went to do love line shows at eight or eight thirty there. They were mad..

"The time we broke into barrett's house some it's a little story it's a good one in my opinion in high school my core group of friends like best friends consisted of is seven dudes i think this is the crew i partied with every weekend we got into dumb ash anna gins with chase girls with all the good shit that makes high school so much fun as you kind of tasting like your kind of first step towards independence and freedom in life or whatever and i have a lot of stories from my days with that squad that i'll never be able to share but one in particular stood out to me is something that the rvp gang might enjoy so one weekend my good friend barrett who has been on rb bp before he was actually our first guest ever he went out of town with his mother and his father he was an only child is an only child you went out of town with this folks for a nice family vacation and the rest of our squad that remained in town was looking for somewhere to get fucked up that weekend and for one reason or another we didn't have any good options like we usually somebody's dad would be cool with us coming over and playing beer pong and have it some girls over whatever but we just didn't have any options this weekend and being the juvenile delinquents lacking in respect and morals that we were we decided hey fuck it would just use barrettes house while he's out of town no big deal and you know you might be thinking that isn't that big of a deal you just chill in the backyard clean up after yourself it's no big deal and you're right it wouldn't have been i mean because when you need somewhere to smoke weed and credit few beers with your boys you need somewhere to smoke weed and crush a few beers with your boys what can you do we had no choice clearly so we rolled the barretts house in a couple of cars and.

"And performing arts education home is where the art lifts callen waldorf women on wednesday dana barrett show gender inequality in hollywood in film and television in general has been bubbling up as an important conversation certainly this year and i would say last year as well and the numbers really aren't where they need to be quite yet but my next guest says women are revolutionizing television her name is joy press her book is called stealing the show welcome to our show please don't steal it joy thank you i promise i won't yeah i i've been a kind of cultural critic and reporter for couple of decades now and over the years you know i've written a lot about tv and kind of didn't really pay enough attention i think to the fact that there there weren't a lot of kind of complex depictions of of women on television or at least certainly not as many as there were of men and and i wasn't really paying attention to who was creating those shows and and kind of around twenty eleven twenty twelve i started to notice there were there was sort of a rush of shows that were created by women that that felt a little bit different and that we're sort of very female centric you know you had shows like girls and new girl and and i mean there are a whole series of them and and it felt like it kind of kicked off something different and and there was a wave and i was curious to see whether it would continue and then i started thinking about some of the shows in tv history and how few kind of really celebrated female creators there were and i and i decided i kinda wanted to write those those tv creators into history and and to look back and see how we got where we were today are focusing on the creators the show runners as opposed to the what we see on screen i think that is an important piece and not everybody is aware of it some of them are both like roseanne barr but some of them are not and and some of them actually who are behind the scenes have come become famous in their own rate because people love their shows but take me through sort of.

"Are wednesday it is the dana barros show and hanging out with us this morning amanda fair honey is here managing partner with barrett fair honey they are the firm that provides justice at work i see these ways i love that that's the website justice it worked alcohol yeah we like it to you that was smart you guys barrett for honey is is a lot that is a lot we used to be barrett edvard honey dot com that was way too much yet people are liquid how do you spell there yeah and just for the record the barrett in barrett and fair honeys in no relations but in any case listen i know you guys represent about of employees in these kinds of claims among all kinds of other employee claims but the meet you movement obviously has been a huge deal for a while now and so now we're starting to move on from just awareness and people saying me to too you know suits being brought and people trying to figure out firings happening suspensions and people dying to figure out how to navigate this world so the first thing i think i i would love to talk about is just sort of the the levels because there's a big difference between somebody locking their office store with you in the room and forcing you to have sex and somebody telling a dirty joked that makes you uncomfortable so you know when you're talking about these from a legal perspective is there are different so huge difference yeah yeah i mean when you're talking about a dirty joked that's not sexual harassment maybe it's offensive to some person but he added legal okay so so there but there are lines that do cross into action of all right but are still not necessarily the same as rape great right yeah there's degrees right okay so let's say somebody's kind of at one of these lesser degrees they're not they haven't raped anyone there's no outright criminal behaviour from that at that level but they've you know uh said look i'm not giving you the promotion unless you have sex with me which is pretty bad which is very bad so where does that fallen in terms of legal rights if you're the victim of that well i mean you absolutely have the legal right not to have sex with a person to.

"And drink ordered faster and to pay on a mobile app you i was thinking about this over the break after you less talked about this this this is i think concert venues and the sporting you know mercedesbenz suntrust they need to jump on this yeah because if you have something like this were someone can order their food through an arab especially with this connected as mercedesbenz is going to be with a gazillion wifi hotspots where is why not be able to do that and then walk up and just kind of have your orders sitting there in ready and show the person hey this is me here's my phone my receipt hugo here's order now that would save so much carr's especially with foot traffic i went to a to suntrust a few times to watch a few games this year and that's the only complaint is a concession lives they don't do these exact so you're trying to walk through lines of people to get to your seat and you're holden you're not chosen in yeah it just doesn't work and so if you have a mobile app and you can order your food and drink ahead of time and you have your credit card linked to compare let's just a click on your own phone you're not that get your credit card out nothing and then you just walk up in pick up your order it so much faster for them because what slowing them down certainly at the fox and in many of this places especially now with the the chip breeders is the payment you slow so this way that's all taking care of and you just walk up and get your popcorn and your bed or whatever it is enemy they still are going to have lines i'm sure does and they will be less right but they will be last because people will take advantage and then i will be taking advantage of this and by the way the app i love to take credit for staff that the app was actually developed by stable colonel who was just on our show get they're all your book barrett book somebody ilam alive so now and listen i can really take credit for this because we had stable colonel on the show like probably a year ago also clearly that's how the facts there are heard about them degas and now they've created.
