"I today is Thursday January sixteenth. Twenty twenty on this day in Nineteen thirty five the the FBI killed Outlaw Mall Barker in a four hour shootout. Ma went down in history as a woman who loved her son's deeply deeply so deeply it made her public enemy number one. Welcome today and true crime. Apart cast original due to the graphic nature of today's crimes listener discretion is advised extreme. Caution is advised for listeners under thirteen. Today we're covering the deadly shootout between the FBI and wanted criminals. Ma and Fred Ed Barker. Let's go back to five thirty. AM On January Sixteenth Nineteen thirty five on the shores of Lake. We're Florida without fifteen. Federal Agents surrounded the House approaching coaching from three sides. If the criminals wanted to escape they'd have to go by boat and if they went to the boat they be in the sights of agent earl. Oh Connolly leader of the operation. The agents had over fifteen hundred rounds of ammo ample tear gas and the element of surprise. And that still wasn't enough for FBI. Director J Edgar Hoover. These outlaws were leaders of the notorious Barker her carpet gang responsible for two high profile kidnappings ten murders and over a million dollars of larceny. And that was just in the past three years the F. B. I.. Had apprehended a few of the gangsters over the past month but hoover was convinced that Connolly's team had finally finally tracked down the gangs real leaders. The dastardly pair were hiding out in the backwoods of central Florida under assumed names spending spending their days hunting a three legged gator named old Joe. It was the tales of gangsters hunting old. Joe That helped the feds track down the safe house as well as a map found in gangster doc barker's hideout which conveniently had the location circled and and now so did the FBI. The agents moved in on the Florida House. A well kept two story with lakeshore views. Then when they made their move Fred Barker come out. We Are Department of Justice agents and we have the house surrounded no reply reply for all they knew the house was empty. They waited and waited growing sluggish in the Florida humidity. After fifteen minutes the agents yelled another warning again there was no answer no surrender not even a sign of three legged. I get old Joe after one more warning. The men launched tear-gas grenades at the windows. Finally a woman's voice called out all right go ahead on her command. Bullets tailed down from the upstairs windows. These outlaws would put up a fight. They were the new Bonnie. And Clyde criminals in the spirit of John Dillinger and mad dog under health and they'd outlived them. All called. Fred Barker was a career criminal thirty three years old. Typically seen with slicked back hair lights stubble and tired is at least in his mugshot. Kate Barker was his mother. She was around faced sixty one year old with short black hair who favored favor dark lipstick and operating in the shadows and her sagging arms aimed a machine. Gun Right at agent Connolly over the next next three hours the F. B. I.. Agents fired every bullet day had connolly's forehead broke out in sweat nerves or perhaps it was just the Florida heat. All of his men were alive and unharmed but could they have been outlasted. He he had to order them to retreat to get more ammo from Jacksonville until he realized that no more gunfire was coming from the house. Either around ten thirty. AM The agents. Strong arm the local handyman. Willie Woodbury to go into the house. Woodbury was instructed trucked to find out if ma and Fred Barker were planning an ambush willie nervously walked up the long long wooden dock leading from Lake. We're to the front door and through the door to the screened in front porch. He passed walls pockmarked with bullet holes overturned chairs and torn paper Sun Shades. Somehow the fancy glass door to China cabinet was untouched. But there was no sign of the Barker's Willie clotted upstairs there. He found Ma and fred by the windows. Dead guns littered the floor between them. Fred was slumped in a chair surrounded by bandages and syringes. His mother had clearly really been tending to him caring for her son even in her own last moments as for ma. It was unclear whether she'd taken one of the FBI's he is bullets or upon watching her child die before her eyes turned her own pistol on her heart either way she would would not be taken by her son's killers woodbury called down to the FBI once again wanted dead or alive. They've had resulted in death. Up Next will examine the crime spree. That led J. Edgar Hoover Hoover to call Ma Barker the most vicious dangerous and resourceful criminal brain of the last decade now. Back to the story on January sixteenth. Nineteen thirty five wanted criminal mob barker died in an FBI shootout and while she wasn't always called Ma Barker somewhat argue that she was always destined for a life of crime. When Arizona's Clark was eight Jesse James winked at her? From their Arizona's fate was sealed. She was entranced by the Glamour of gunslingers in the harsh planes of the wild west she'd never quite be able to see crime as a bad thing at age eighteen Arizona's married and changed her name Barker to match her husband Kate to match her self image though she'd be best known by the name she took took in eighteen. Ninety three Ma Ma and George Barker had four sons in short order. Hermon Lloyd dock and Freddie Eighty. They were her world. They were also juvenile delinquents. From their early teens the Borger boys were breaking and entering stealing cars and robbing their neighbors. Instead of putting her foot down Ma enabled her brood unwilling or unable to see her sons flaws. They were in and out of jail but she did everything in her power to get them out and keep them free however theft and trespassing Soon turned into kidnapping and murder. In nineteen twenty seven. Herman Barker was caught committing a robbery. You and killed a police officer in an attempt to escape however the attempt was futile. Herman died by suicide to avoid another stint in in jail. This seems to have been the breaking point for George Barker who left Ma in nineteen twenty eight with no husband one son dead and the other three in jail. Ma had no way to support herself and was forced to turn to.

We does that so sweet. It's the sweetest now. My friends bear with me. This is where it gets interesting. I'm so ready. I'm ready for you. One Evening Jessica. Jessica and Connor were canoed alling. Embed and Connor fell asleep. Having Fallen Asleep. Connors hat happened to fall off his head. And what. What did Jessica finding my desk? Aaron remember him unnamed boyfriend. Yeah him she saw Aaron posing posing as Connor. What your overweight my friend? It gets no this realization that Jessica was just groped and canoeing with somebody who she did not give consent to lead to her to tell authorities of this assault about three weeks later. I mean she kinda waited a little while yeah she was a little but again. This wasn't sure how is going to go down judgement free exactly. Aaron was then arrested in a nearby Park and strip searched at the police station which revealed the worst part of this entire story story. Aaron was actually Jim Barker. I told you she was important. Wait what exactly I myself thought. Wait coming in holy umbrella Batman I can assure you I thought the exact same thing that everybody else is thinking. Gemma Barker was Aaron and Connor. Okay now I'm thoroughly confused Alon grasshopper so. Here's the Jemma the mastermind that she is got close to Jessica an unnamed to trick them she would hang out with them to figure out what they liked and guys and the best way to get them to fall for someone. Meanwhile well Jemma was dropping them pretty pennies on men's clothing and figuring out how to disguise herself physically as three different men her three because remember. There was also luke in all of this yet my mind just kind of like froze for a moment because literally can't keep up with the information exactly now remember. Andy Harry Jess well. Those three or just fake accounts. That Gemma made to help manipulate Jessica an unnamed into staying with their booth things. Oh my the real people so when it comes down to it there's only like two actual humans will. There's three humans. Okay jemma unnamed named Jessica. Jessica Jessica Yeah everybody else. Everybody else's fake. Oh my gosh right yeah. My mind can't process this and mind you. This whole thing occurred over a seven month period so like between November twenty third of two thousand nine nine and may tenth of two thousand ten. That's a long time to keep up a ruse like that. Yes Oh my goodness I just have to keep thinking gang. We're going to get to the rest here in a minute. I just have to keep thinking. They've they jus- Ika. An unnamed saw potentially really Aaron and Connor for pretty long time. Yeah frequently yes and and I guess they never wanted to hang out with both men together right. That's Yeah uh-huh or like they never wanted Jemma to meet their boyfriends right. Okay at feels weird to me. That is very weird weird especially for that period of time like that seven months. I thought you were going to say this was like you know maybe a week or two no Seven months seven months all saying yeah so. She's kind of a mastermind. I mean I'm a little impressed. Yeah it's insane okay. So moving on let me just say I don't really know how I feel about. The outcome. Gemma stood trial at the Guilford Crown Court in January of two thousand twelve pleading guilty to two specimen charges of of sexual assault and one of fraud. She was sentenced to thirty months in prison and is currently living life on the outside of opin. She only got thirty months for all that. How I genuinely don't know I mean that's I mean I guess when you really look into it like she? She didn't rape anybody she just did sexual assault right but there's also like fraud. Yeah it's not like I don't know the full `law obviously right especially in England. That's true Kunas up but like it wasn't tax fraud or like uh covering up Abbadi fraud right. It was literally just lying to people about who she was and I guess Sushi technically made up these people yet. So it's not like it was she was impersonating an actual human right. Okay so I guess when you put it all together but I have to just think about the sanity of those two girls afterwards. Yeah because like can can you imagine how much therapy with me. I couldn't even fathom. I mean what could you even get past it. That's just timing. How could you trust anybody after that? Literally Yeah I would never my gosh in everything so yeah. That's she got thirty thirty months. I don't really get it. I mean I do in the grand scheme of things right but I don't the same time xactly but here's the other thing. This isn't the only case of. Its kind what I know. I know I've found another one and now scares me for everything seriously. I had no idea this was a thing. I didn't either this cat fishing on steroids. No it's like real life fishing though you know. Yes now he made. It is now the Internet. Yeah like higher L. I. R. L.. I know so in September of two thousand fifteen gene gail neuland stood trial at Chester crown. Court accused of five counts of sexual assault. The victim was her former best friend who alleges gail went under the male guys of kyw Four Choon grooming her on facebook before starting a sexual relationship. The job with her Nulan was found guilty on three charges of assault by penetration by a majority verdict of eleven to one after to the jury deliberated for seventeen hours. Twenty five minutes and two thousand seventeen. She was sentenced to prison for six and a half years. Wow she got way more sinton. Yeah but this one like when I was reading this when it was actually a lot worse. She she it's not funny. I'm only laughing because I'm nervous. It's not funny at all. Grow was was nice enough to give us a sample of their delicious. It's a hell style German lager. It's called give them hells and it's tasty this. We're good for this time of year where it's not super cold yet. But it's got a little bit of a little bit of a cold in the air. And according to them this is a the hell's is just just a classic German lager in this era of American craft beers being super focused on rudy and hazy as pastry stoute's it seems most people forget about what just plain gold good beer is when you stop and if you take a look at their boards you'll find one one. Ip because we gotta pay the bills and they prefer to focus on ninety percent of other beer styles seems most other brewers around have forgotten about so IPA's covered. Nobody's lacking in this town so they're making sure they're getting just good quality. Woody beer beer flavored beer and this is great. Not It's Goddamn refreshing based solely on that description. I already love them already because they understand my feelings on and this beers fucking banging. That's a delicious. Just it's a good old fashioned yellow allo beer beer. Yes I'm sure it has but this is something. I'm definitely going to be revisiting and perfect for Clive. Barker being creator of hellraiser give them hells seems like like an appropriate response. Also German style. So as in pinhead was originally eight German soldier Z.. British bef the show so he was British ship. Three you're not paying attention to hell raiser three no okay. Nazi German shoulder now acts I Germany. He acts much like Goth kids. He picked up German later in life. Oh well well done a big thanks to garden grove for that That share this is delicious. Thank you guys are you now lowdown you're able to procure a little bit of a sample as well when we we drinking on here drinking with another East Coast local beer. Here we got one from Hollywood. It's so it's an imprio- milk stout with toasted coconut Madagascar of another bean and almond flavor and is a comes in and a weapon ten percent so it is also a Dick Kicker. Absolutely yeah this. This is a beer. I'm going to tell my grandkids about sticking my balls in God it actually got me buzzed. Really Fast Yeah. We'll ten percent will do that. Yeah the glass like it's on Mash and I'm GonNa go home and tell them this is about that she's been mentioning. Get any doubt on our our scale for Forbear as the ABC Austin missed volume scale of one to ten. So where would you rate these beers nine nine for both there We're here with no nine nine nine nine okay. All right I'd give I'd go with eight and a half to nine for both of because ends of the spectrum spectrum and both sitting out to do yeah. They're both very amazing what they're trying to do. and which is why. I'm not with nine only because I haven't like you know salt my pants yet. Hannah's assault my pain. If you have a Jack late Denison Tin. I'm going to give it a ten. I'm just going to say that. I don't drink as much as I used to but I was younger and this did did for me. What three or four younger shots did for me way back when they got me buzz faster than most beers? Here's usually say ten because I I don't drink as much these days. I don't want to have to drink so much. He says three or four shots yeager back in the day talking about the rocks days down talking elephant more than five years ago. I mean not on the Russia though rucks their main street. Yeah we're yeah settlement type. Oh that was I was a seven yeager. Shot Guy Back in those days. Oh seven yeager shots and I was. I was really where I wanted to be and at the end of the night I was good to go home. Drive home. Fair enough Nowadays I I'm older. I don't drink nearly as much but I still want to get a happy buzz. That's why I gave this one a high. Yeah you also don't work cloven hooves anymore anymore. No no calm down. A little still am astounded by. Just how Rad Richmond's peercy says these are two did two different breweries that have two very different approaches to beer making but neither one of them doing a bad job at all and are hurting business either like got time. I mean we neither one of them. They're always packed. Even though g guys that legend like they they were been listening. What the seventy S? There's still chugging out beers and there's still busy as shit and this love have good absolutely me going back and forth between the two beers tonight. There's been amazing loving. I'm loving bay balance each other beautifully. This first one. What did you say it was The Gills give them hells yeah. It's so it's so it. It's so refreshing. Yeah it really chills me out from the intense buzz of the one. I'm having a blast when brother worked with the kind of a hell raiser pleasure and pain Kennedy bouncing what is yeah. We're we're we're just killing it. I man this is great. Now you've got a little little. Yeah I've got another one the share if you guys want something. I might take a SIP. That's just kind of a track. I've got four. These paid off the noise acre sip and passing around a little little SWIG here also in Virginia local. This is from Winchester Sida works. I've been CIDER kick end of summer. This is called on the same. Like sex chair. No this is called Ginga. You've been all in all the sex. It is a nice ginger cider from winchester side or its main Virginia. I've already drank about three out of four. And they're in pint cans. Yeah so they're doing pretty tasty. Yeah it's not too sweet. It's not ought to champagne. It's got a good flavor to it without being overpowered ginger spicy or sweet or dry. Yeah yeah that was so good. I had to take a second set. Because I'll tell you the the level of ginger you're not going to get the spice off the ginger. But you're going to get that just GonNa get that little bit to let you know there and then it goes into a mildly bidder. Kickin your ass with the bouncing all three. I'm living Virginia anywhere. Yeah but you need that because citre. It's it's already a later flavor if you if you put in too much ginger that's all you would taste at that point. 'cause ginger so strong that that's fucking good. I love all all the shares are really dazed by accident. Total wine over here. Nice nice to see if they have anyone else in snakes them all right so that is what we're drinking now onto the part where we make fools out of ourselves more so than say. The criminal mastermind behind the Barker carpets gang. The media ran with this story dubbing her bloody Ma Barker one newspaper headline read mob, Barker brains of gang reported killed with Fred Barker. Son in furious fray, whether it was true or not she would go down in history as an infamous insidious character with numerous movies cartoons and songs describing her bloody rampage as for the rest of the Barker's. Loyd was finally released from prison in October nineteen thirty eight three years after the death of mine, Freddie, he vowed a normal job as a restaurant manager in Denver married and had four children. Unfortunately, Lloyd's wife suffered from mental health problems and accidentally killed him with a shotgun in nineteen forty nine. He was fifty one years old doc attempted to escape from Alcatraz in nineteen thirty nine with four other inmates. They made it out of the prison cellblocks and down to the shore of the island where prison guards spotted them and opened fire. Doc Barker died of his injuries later that day at age forty with all the Barker's dead or in prison, Alvin carpets was the last remaining public enemy on j Edgar Hoover's list. He was eventually found in New Orleans in nineteen thirty six and sentenced to life in prison. Carpets was eventually released on parole in nineteen sixty nine and he lived peacefully until his death in nineteen seventy nine at age, seventy two. With the exception of Alvin carpets. All of the Barker is gang members, met, untimely demise. Including my herself, what's tragic is that many claim Ma Barker wasn't even a criminal merely. An innocent casualty at the hands of the FBI multiple surviving gang members and affiliates, including Alvin carpets himself spoke of Maza loving mother. Who was always sent away during the planning and execution of crimes. So she wouldn't get involved. One criminal filial even suggested that mach could hardly plan breakfast, let alone crime while the depictions of Ma Barker as a bloodthirsty criminal continued to this day, it's significantly more likely that she was just a well intentioned mother who struggled to keep her for rowdy boys in line today. Most FBI records state that Ma was not involved in the crimes and it's implied that J. Edgar Hoover simply may. Made up the tall tale of her as a criminal mastermind to salvage the FBI's reputation after they shot and killed a sixty one year old mother it's important to remember that in the nineteen thirties even more so than today. It was difficult for most people to imagine a woman being violent criminal recent statistics from Donahue, an soa attorneys at law suggests that women are fifty eight percent less likely than men to be sentenced to prison and that women on average received shorter prison sentences when it comes to theft crimes the common perception is that women aren't capable of being as violent as men based on the evidence Ma was at best an accomplice who provided her son's with safe refuge. But had no part in planning or executing the gang's crimes, but to combat the public perception that they'd killed an innocent defenseless woman, the FBI chose to portray Ma as an over the top bloodthirsty Ma. Monster. Remember that Ma Barker was born to a poor family grew up uneducated married at age eighteen and bore four sons soon thereafter, her children were all she had in this life. She protected them became co dependent with them and did not discipline them or teach them how to be honest men and for the crime of being too lenient apparent she was executed by the FBI alongside her hardened criminal, son. So did Ma Barker receive unfair treatment will let you decide..

"About yourself is really important, how to make sure you can take control of your own. I mean, all that much more. All right. Here we go. Eric Barker welcome to the show. That's great to be was pleasure to hear. I really enjoyed reading your book. People don't know. And I mentioned introduction as Eric z author of Wall Street Journal bestseller. Barking up the wrong tree, and I have to ask you, is that was that a play on your name? It definitely it has. It bears some relevance to the content, but it's it's more may being allies s. Okay. All right. Why did the same with my second book which was amp up your sales amp? As my arm? My initial. So same thing. Dr, subtitles, surprising, science behind why everything you know about success is mostly wrong, and I have to tell you. I really liked this book and I, as we mentioned before on the air as it probably quicker for me to highlight the things I didn't want to highlight leave the house blank might have gone through the book faster. But yeah, a lot of lot of great ideas. A lot of interesting research site that coward counterintuitive for a lot of a lot of folks for me in some instances and and some topics, and I think really worth getting into because I think that that this whole idea of success and being great and things that maybe some degree or even overemphasize to some degree in society, the science behind really fascinating. So. The opening central question you posed which you know a better to be an outlier with both handicaps and superpowers or do we live better lives being at the middle of the bell curve. Which which is. Very much depends on what what kind of life you want and perhaps let arena you're in. But you know the the issue is that when you look at when you look at the issue of success in terms of doing pretty well, you know than, hey, middle of the bell curve. As long as you're working hard and you're applying strengths, fine. It's like when we look at the very very extremes of success, you know, you're usually talking about people who are are very different and are happy to exploit their differences. But you know, it's not. It's not like you're superheroes who just have positive, superpowers very often very often, those extreme strings come with extreme weaknesses and and that's that's something that needs to be navigated. Like why refer to kinda has a professor at Harvard Business box abouts you know that when we look at at leaders can be very confusing. Some leaders seem like figureheads. You don't do my chant and other leaders. Are, you know, captivating. You know, powerful forces that really drive seems forward and you send what he saw on the research is that there's two different types of leaders, you know is filtered and unfiltered leader? Yeah. And so once again, it's it's really about sometimes it's not an issue of more. It's an issue of different. You know, it's an issue of somebody who might have really extreme negatives, but their positives are critical in that arena. So for someone to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses really allows them to top demise around that, however extreme they may be. Yeah, and we're gonna come back into that. The topic of the filter resign filter Lear actually thoroughly. Foresight expect as reading about the descriptions based on the current occupant of the White House. Serve fit some of those description. So, but when you talk about the this idea of success or living allies, Bellcore at dent serve playing to the average it's drink to cord..

"And expert insight on how to be awesome at life we welcome eric to the show barker welcome to what anyone can do so happy to have you here tonight it's great to be here well it's it's exciting because of course so much of the work you've done research really so aligns with what we're talking about this year we like to you know engage our audience with but and i do want of course start with your book that you released last year or coming up the wrong tree who's a whole look at success in this idea that what we think we know about it maybe what we mostly know about it and why maybe that's a bit misguided so if you could kinda tell us what do you think that the prevailing sentiment is about or definition people have success why is it wrong and what's right so you kind of walk us through that that'd be helpful i mean the the key the key thesis for the book was the idea that we grow up with a lot of these maximums of success you know everything from nice guys finish last two it's not what you know to you know and you know would there when we hear them they're not empirically validated were just it's just up that gets bandied about we don't know if that was true to begin with if maybe it was true in the past and isn't true now and these there they don't necessarily hold up you know for instance you know adam grant awarding found that nice guys actually are disproportionately represented at the top and the bottom of success metrics so nice guys finish last they also finished first and you know when you look at a lot of the research in terms of networking networking is really valuable but it's not what you know it's who you know you know no not not so much it's like when i look at the research on extroversion introversion extroverts fantastic at making connections introverts are usually the people who are the experts in their field so it it it varies you know there's not like e these easy kind of you know one quick pithy answers to success that we often here it's usually a little bit more nuance than that so we'll how was that how would that translate for me now let's say that i have buy into the idea that i'm not going to accept you know a lot of these maximum tv suggested so how do i think about success how do i think about it for myself and how do i go getting there really the the issue is it's an issue of self knowledge you know aligned with context it was like really getting to know yourself knowing your strengths your weaknesses another concept i talk about in the book that go from from harvard business school talks about is intensified ours woo or weaknesses or things that are generally considered weaknesses that in the right context can actually be can actually be positives so knowing your strengths knowing your weaknesses your intensifies and then finding a environment accompany context that actually rewards you for those because a lot of people might have able strengths but they're not necessarily respected awarded at the the company or the institution they work for and other people might be working in a fantastic company but they're not really align themselves great with what's going on there and so i think most people think about one or the other hey i wanna get a job at a great company or hey i know what i'm good at but they don't necessarily think about how to best align the two because that's where you see like the big results is when what you're saying is also what's being heard it's a two sided conversation so what's the best way for someone to actually really get a fair sense of themselves their assessment of their in this feedback to hear from other people and there's some knowing yourself just ability to have some reflection but yeah thoughts about a some good ways to really get to know ourselves in who we are in probably get a sense of what cultures we may be fit in versus other places we all know that there are great people that i've seen who left companies not bad but they were the company somewhere else in there while the successful i absolutely and that's what some of the some of the research shows is that people don't take context in the consideration of boris grossberg at harvard did research showing that few look at.
