Barry revolts you're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio My extra special guest this week is ray dalio He is the founder of Bridgewater the world's largest hedge fund and the author of a new book principles for dealing with the changing world order Why nations succeed and fail So there was a data point that I was really impressed with from the book that I had no idea And I want to ask you this question as a follow-up of what we were talking about earlier Ten great nations going back a few hundred years since 1900 7 out of ten of these nations saw their wealth wiped out at least once That's a pretty astonishing data point The wealth of an entire nation wiped out how does that happen And what is the aftermath like It's so good that people can see these cycles starting we start like in 1900 Our perspective does not include these things and when you start to see it at the cycle it's quite something So what happens is here's how it works Capitalism and a capital market is a fabulous system for getting resources in the hands of entrepreneurs and inventive people and it raises living standards particularly after a war when there's a peaceful period and you've done the restructuring and things improve And so if we go back let's say to the 1800s and take 1850 And so on We have the industrial revolution that the power of the individual and so on and it rises But what happens is it also creates wealth gaps and it creates opportunity gaps because those who have more money can educate their children better can do certain things And it also creates greater levels of indebtedness because as the cycle goes on everybody at bets on it increasing And so on and they get more in debt and so on And you turn the 1900 You come into 1900 And then you start to see the conflict begin to emerge This is when the bad treatment of workers and workers rights and then that's what labor Child labor And then also taxes start to rise We didn't have an income tax And then they start to rise But there's also an anger and that begins to emerge And then there's the conflict and there's economic pain and conflict When you have a big wealth gap and you have economic problems you have a conflict That's a classic set of ingredients particularly than if you have too much debt You're going to have a problem So what we see is then you come into that period And the pendulum swings the other way That people get angry You saw that in 2008 The anti capitalist You can certainly see the anti capitalist The in other words the billionaires not no longer the inventive person who gets what they deserve kind of thing They're really more okay the greedy And they're living sort of decadent lives while at the same time as people are not getting educated and so on People get angry And so you see that kind of an R cap and repeatedly So that's the nature of the beast in terms of that cycle So here's the big question Are these cycles inevitable Is our fate sealed Or is there something we as an ancient can do to break what sounds like a very self destructive cycle of external competition excessive debt and internal strife Yes No it's in our ability to deal with that as a society Because in the book I show the 5 major determinants but I also show 18 determinants And they are predictors of the next ten years growth rates and conditions And so you could see them that's like a health index Right So it's education innovation and technology cost competitiveness military strength trade et cetera Right And what I did is I put numbers on that so you can see the graph and are they improving or worsening And so on so that's a health index that I hope everyone would look at it and even judge their leaders by Are we getting better or are we getting weaker And what is the conflict But if I'm going to not take you through all the 18 in the book I just want to say that there are two there are a few basic ones Most importantly can we earn more than we spend I mean can.

I bring this up. Because i think going forward this certainly going to be concerned of mine. So the tennis center. I believe is open for full capacity but you have to be fully vaccinated and the way i read. The story was the lines to get in. Were so long that in some cases it took people over two hours to get it now. That might be an exaggeration to make the story better. I don't know even if it's an hour and a half to try and get in. Could you imagine you go to a giant game jet game. You go to what i know. The garden is a fully vaccinated building now so for this season coming up. When did they say that. They've said that for months. I didn't see that you sure about that. Because i did it. For the last two playoff games all right. But i don't know if. I just bought a rangers ticket planned for eleven games and i talked to the guy specifically and they said that there was no word on that yet or their warrant restrictions yet but that might change. Because that's leave. The garden is vaccination required now The the the did i will tell. We'll clean that up and make sure we know for sure. But i'm almost hundred anyway. So the tennis is one hundred percent fully vaccinated have to have proof of dope tests or anything like that. Just i believe you needed proof of vaccination okay and so i think if this becomes something going forward universally and it might. I don't know like i'm going to a concert this weekend. Where it's nation maroon five. Oh nice down in camden. So did you need your proof of vaccination or you have to have a negative test within forty eight hours either way. You're showing some sort of you know health And it's concerning because nobody budgets two hours to get into a facility. I'm i don't do you. No no no. I like to get there early. Could you imagine if that came to fruition. Going forward seventy game and you can't get missed all game. There's got to be a better way. I mean i don't know what that is honestly i. I don't i don't have the the answer. Is you have to have more people checking and you have to have more entry points. I mean i don't know because clearly it's going to it's going to be important if that's your requirement for your facility that you're going to have to show the proof that's fine. That's going to take a moment. It shouldn't take that long but it's gonna take a moment you have to have other places to get in and more people check in. It's the only way. I can only zoos and is only one entrance because i was just thinking engines because they check it when you go into the whole like ground so it's at the front gate like right. There in flushing meadow park. They don't check in once you're in there. It's once you once you make your engines in. And there's only one way because i did. Now i think about it. What the islanders play offs. I took my brother-in-law my nephew. One the honor playoff games at the coliseum and they at the time they had to you had to have either proof of tests or vaccination if you were you could sit in non vaccinated sections but then you gotta have a proof all the tests so they did check that there were no lonzo or at least it wasn't a cigar. But i was not sure that guy barclay center to will require fans employees to be vaccinated. That just came out. I feel he made this announcement three months ago. They might have. But i'm telling you from the ticket guy that. I talked to less than three months ago about this rangers plan. Which by the way. I'm waiting to find out. One lung was number is gonna get retired so i decided i need another game. Or what hopefully Get lucky and have that. He didn't say that you needed. I asked specifically if you needed fully Vaccination and he said no not as of now but obviously that could change so and especially when we talk about the indoor arenas that's we have an issue. Where outside the yankee stadium or city field. I don't think that's going to be an issue moving forward. I would imagine. I would think if they were going to change that the would change it probably now right. I know he's now. The garden did require the vaccine for their foo fighters concert. Which is what. I knew about right. That was about a month ago. I want to say something like that right. But maybe anticipating next year with the rangers or the next. And you're right. I mean they did for the knicks play playoffs which was more recently than anything else i just. I didn't hear that about moving forward. I bought those restrictions were lifted. And if they're put back on then you know that changes the dynamics of barclay center for sure okay going to and i do think that's going to be the way i really do. I think he's gonna be a wave of the future and that's kind of where we're going for. How long though. I mean forever until it's gone if it ever is gone i don't i don't know i can't answer right now. This is what we're dealing with. And so i guess the point is little public service announcement. Be ready to stand in line to get in because again now. It's not the case for city field. Sometimes i think people get too caught up in this idea of trying to build mock drafts and project based off fit when in reality at least in this person's opinion and perspective it's way more like no you've got you've got a big board a one to sixty one to eighty one to one hundred and those first ten fifteen names on the board are. The players are going to be best. And you're gonna pick those regardless in many instances of who you have available on your team. So with that in mind i just think suggs has the high upside and he's number two for me at the rockets. It's something i've been screaming for years now. You know he's got all the intangibles coaches loved him. The athleticism is there is a winter. All that stuff is there. I don't know that he pops the way.
