"Monthly visits from her killer. The cooking by a man named meathead the author of barbecue bible a grill girl briskly barbecue journalist and the male facing so the barbecue world known as the embedded. Correspondence only found right here. Barbecues central show this portion of the show being brought to you by pitt barrel cooker the most unbelievable outdoor cooking device on the plan currently available in two sizes with a host of accessories whether you're a beginner or professional definitely a cooker. You wanna add the arsenal. But the pit broker dot com. Tell them the barbecue. Central show sent you and we are almost halfway through the year may twenty twenty in may one of the biggest barbecue events. Each year memphis in may was cancelled. I also spoke with darren. Warfare show from iowa smokey dis and while he was planning a run at memphis in may that was dashed. Obviously he did mention that. During this point in the pandemic has restaurants were actually doing very good business. It was obviously a mostly take out and drop off. Catering things like this versus dining in but Much like a lot of li- fire industry and especially barbecue restaurants. That saw a lot of fast casual service. Were doing a pretty well given the circumstance also in may the barbecue hall of fame at at a new announcement exclusive to the show. Emily park announced the nine semi finalists right here before they distributed their electronic alert across the internet then through various news wire platforms. We did right here on the show. Three of those names would make up the twenty twenty class and that was going to be found out a little later in the month. Meathead was a part of those nine semi-finalist names again. Would he get in this year. Stay tuned on the recap in. May the state cook off. Association held a competition steak. Cook off in utah. And i had the host of the pit master podcast on to talk about the experience because they went and cooked it. Stake continue to hold events from that point on that to me that seem to be a floodgate or a watershed or a tipping point. However you wanna talk about it that seemed to be the measuring stick on. Are we going to press ahead with sca events or after this. Are we going to back off. And they pressed ahead full steam ahead. I didn't see many. Were there any as he events even got cancelled after that. I'd i'd probably don't think so. So they were running a full slate pretty much from then on. Also that month we had a barbecue hall of fame roundtable. Show where ahead. Daniel vaughan from texas monthly ray lampy who had just recently been added to the names committee and one of our show pals and favorites adrienne miller. The soul food cook became on and talked about ray added to the committee. And what those thought about that. And then of course. We talked more in depth about the nine semi-finalists and then i concluded that roundtable by asking everybody who they were going to be voting for but of course. Nobody answered me which is fine. No glanville from pitt barrel cooker was a guest in may and showed us around the and this was an exclusive look by the way of the pit barrel cooker lifestyle room in laval they had also just recently settled a big lawsuit with one of their now former competitors that being barrel house cookers and noah mentioned the pbx vaguely level. No release dates. No price points nothing other than the cooker would probably be in that fifty gallon range but aside from talking about it it never officially launched in twenty twenty also in may the embedded correspondent segment focused on who we would pick for the two thousand twenty class the barbecue hall of fame more importantly the finale of the barbecue central show american idol edition took place. There was against me jeff rice. We sang a produced duet if you missed the show last week. You're getting up to speed now if you watched the show last week. It's a little bit of a repeat but we're doing the show and order this week again. We sang a duet that was produced. The big enrich smash hit. Save a horse ride a cowboy or i changed the words at the very end of the song. Save a horse ada. Sorry what was it. Eat a horse. Say eat a horse a cowboy and then not to be outdone with the produce duet which i still mind blown that. We actually pulled that off. We sang live gesture like in wisconsin. And i'm in cleveland. The rock and roll hall of fame city and the barbecue capital of the north coast. Oh by the way cleveland. Also evidently outlaw biker gang that i never knew about capital of the work different story for a different day we sang live right here on the show i saying in oran be show to get outside of the box and it failed jeff saying ring of fire by johnny cash and he. He boat raced me. Those votes came in fast and furious. Not a one for me for at least forty eight hours boat race incredible. The barbecue hall of fame class was officially announced in may aaron franklin joe john davidson and desharnais robinson. All made the cut making up the two thousand twenty class. That was may twenty seventh when it was originally announced. I didn't get into the podcast feed until june six. So if you wanna hear that. Make sure you go into june. It's june six. You will actually see that listed into the podcast feed now. We officially go into june halfway through the year now. Aaron franklin came on to talk about his newly minted status was barbecue hall of famer although he didn't realize that he was even in the running again the year until i had texted him minutes before the names were going to be revealed saying. Hey if you're on. Can i call you meet reaction and he said hey neat if i'm around and i'm available i'll definitely take that call We also talked about how his business was doing through. The pandemic at that point never landed joe don davidson for an interview. Unfortunately i also tried to lineup disarray. Robinson and from cozy corner barbecue and tennessee. And i had it.

"Him. I don't know if i have enough time. To get the fact. On why jack nicholas the golden bear is also a raging asshole of seismic in gargantuan proportions likewise one of the littoral smallest on the face of the earth. And unless. you're a horse racing person which i'm guessing most of you. Aren't you have no idea who can't disarm as an aside from being a raging alcoholic. He also happens to be a raging asshole as one. When i rank assholes in this earth jack nicholas is number one with a bullet and it is not even close second and it's a far far back second but second nonetheless is that jockey kent storm. Who's probably listening the show right now. Well into his third handle of paramount. Vodka i'm not going to get into it. Just know that those to take the cake for me. I don't believe. I have pulled the curtain fully back on why jack nicholas and can't disarm. Oh are assholes and this is this is not the platform for it this evening but at some point in twenty twenty one i will reveal the jack nicholas and kanter storm. Oh asshole mold and you too will become non fans of. There's a instant in an instant. I guarantee it. I mean none of you are fans of kansas normal anyway. But i don't know who follows golf out of you three. Or if you think jack nicklaus is a good guy but trust me. He's a bag of seismic proportions. And my story will only served to solidify his ass holiness to you and you will also hate him to be continued. next up. rod gray was back on the show. I was talking to sterling ball in the first hour about how rod was very forthcoming. And letting that truth. Be shown. Finally on the hall of fame and rod. And i were barbie each other a little bit back and forth on that very subject. A lot of money was probably spent upfront on having guy fieri come in and be the face plate. I mean let's be honest driving. Should we get him on the hall of fame. Absolutely not absolutely have. I am not sitting sitting your seat. It's not worth you. And i have over tonight. Only have limited amount of time but there were reasons and honestly what better than have him come back the next year and be the mc of the whole event. I mean it was a great year. Great put johnny and it was great to put him in and then come back next year and he wants to. Mc the whole event. What a great way to do that. But why not just agree on some reduced appearance fee. Instead of putting him into the barbecue hall of fame you know what. I'm saying there no fee but i'm saying in putting me the very fabric of the barbecue hall of fame. He's done nothing to get into the barbecue faint see. I'm gonna leave this year but when we started this we have three categories in one category was a face and we tried and it didn't honestly go over all that well but i stand behind our decision to put guy guidance. I duke was food and he does a lot for food. It's still paying off these barbecue health. I'm sorry you didn't get greg. Nothing to do with it. I i could care line up your ass about i gas. We gotta be kidding me. Yeah so i got kaba. Somebody had that in their bits two. I think that was duck. Doug i saw you feverishly writing a note here there. You have a reaction on who is he talking about in terms of the face that was supposed to be other than guy. Fear it well. So what he's saying is originally. When this do hall of fame was being rolled out through the american royal there were three categories. There was business. There was faster and was celebrity. So he's saying laboratories as celebrity and that was guy. John did you have a rebut. At the cobb is the best part. And you can talk to sterling and rod all day long. And they're never gonna change and they're gonna keep going. It's it's horse. Meat and horse meat is going to happen in two. Twenty twenty one. We're bringing it back. Twenty seventeen twenty seventeen and original cova could only have two. That's right thousand seventeen original Then we have some We have a meathead one coming up right here. A we learned in august august eleventh meathead refuses to cover his grills. I have never put a cover on my max. I've had one for years. Never had an issue with rushed. Where do you keep outdoors in chicago. Not covered uncovered. I'm coming into your the user abuser. How dare i just lazy. Plus who they should be able to take it. They should be this. Lazy takes one. Second when i'm done cooking. My grill is hot to cool off to you. Got dishes to you got to eat. How long do you think is gonna stay. You think it's going to stay hot for an hour. It's not an offset cooker. That's how i beat had if you're gonna invest how much is this cooker for the retail. Three three grand. You're not gonna take five minutes to put on a cover from the elements. I mean couple of endure. I have uncovered. I don't even have a cover for russell. Coverer i am now sort of. I'm better you know. Because now. I hear your voice in my head every time i go out and i look out of my window. They're not a here. Greg on dick and so i go on a cover one. Not all some halfway there. Yeah that's the best. Do right now is the best. I'm comfortable with right now john. We're used to meet head was not a cover was that. Was that something that you learned that day it was. I learned that. And i was surprised. I can defend a bid on a mac. Have you got a three thousand dollar mac. It's made to sit outside. it's no different than a giant old hickory that sits outside year round but the majority of us not to speak for all of us. don't have three thousand dollar pellet grills and if i was lucky enough to have one i'd spend the three hundred dollars to cover it up so i was really surprised. He's in chicago. How long they're gonna come apart. Doug were you surprised to.

"Exact words were. Nothing should be this good saw in the thing that she so. She's allergic to tomatoes so she couldn't even try. The burnt ends because the burdens had some some sauce on him but the brisket. I mean she just sat there and pick data an hour and a half to ten well. Worth is out stanton though it was it was outstanding in the place that you got it from a butcher shop in pensacola florida. I will call them again. If i need anything because that was outstanding. Let's go ahead and end here. I got a list from robert moss. Who is Actually sits on the board the barbecue hall of fame. Believe it or not in the names. Think so he's just put out the top ten best colleges in the south as it relates to barbecue and i would figure anybody is more of an authority than robert moss. Scott to be used. This is your wheelhouse here. Ten is southern methodist university. And he site pecan lodge pecan lodge and slow bone cattle back. Which isn't too far north from there. That's a carrots. Dr lockhart smokehouse. And pecan lodger very close to to. Smu i can live with that. Number nine is east. Carolina university in greensville beat b.'s. barbecue in greenville. But then the skylight in and aden is only about a twenty minute. Drive away right. He also notes sam jones barbecue which is obviously the sun and a number. Eight is catava college sales. Barry north carolina north carolina barbecue. Knowledge is pathetic and the reason is the football teams. North carolina have not been good enough. Know they just have not every once. Get to go up there. Like when russell wilson was at nc state. I got to go do story Ever go to chapel hill every once in a while. but i still haven't been the lexington barbecue. That is a big problem. But you know one time. I went to chapel hill i win over greenville. Actually to meet lincoln riley. Who's the oc at east carolina. He's not a head coach. Oklahoma but that was the first time i got to go to skylight end and thank goodness for that. Seven is a tie between rice and the university of houston. Yeah okay so where houston. Barbecues is pretty spread out because now pinkerton is kind of close to downtown so that that'd be fairly close to age But you gotta go out to pair land for killings so the problem with houston's is so big and you're driving along way but i understand the houston metroplex has great barbecue. This is the only one that i seem to have a problem with. I i have no concept of geographies especially anywhere outside of ohio in specifically regional cleveland. The amount of grade barbecue restaurants that are he just mentioned. Fiji's raise barbecue. Ray goals papa. Charlie's triple blood brothers truth killings as you had mentioned tejas chocolate. There's no way that this tie should be seven. This should be a tie for second place third. Maybe but seventh is way down the list. Those are some of the biggest names in texas for barbie and that's the thing that the texas cities have such a concentration especially the big cities in texas have such a concentration of good barbecue places. The rest of the states really can't compete so six. Is the university of memphis. So you have barbeque. No all all of the biggies. Fifth vanderbilt in nashville. Let me ask you something. It's funny yeah. It's not nationals. Not a great barbecue town. It's like it's it's almost like cleveland. There's like three really good barbecue spots in town. Except i feel nashville. Feels like they should be more respected and barbecue because they're in the south. It's weird nationals. Great food town but it is not a great barbecue town if that makes sense so you have like and peg-leg poker and all that but it you you should have more conic places in a city of that size in the south. That's that's all. I'm thinking number four university of south carolina. Oh yeah well so columbia. South carolina my my hometown. I was born two miles from campus at baptist hospital in columbia and so south carolina barbecue in obviously has its regions. But in the midland's your typical barbecue restaurant is a buffet. Which i i wonder. I haven't obviously having a chance to go there since cova but the the the barbecue buffet concept is not as widespread anywhere else. And it's just it's one of those things. We're that as a kid you could go in you know. Depending on the time of day you went because they put ribs on the buffet at night but not at lunch but you could always get hope or can you get chicken and you know the ones in columbia are pretty good but if you really wanna see the best of that format you go down to holly hill. South carolina is about an hour south end. There's place called sweatman. They're only open. Friday and saturday whole hog the rest of the week. You're basically cutting down trees to defeat a smoker. So it's a it is a inexperienced unlike any other third is the university of alabama. So obviously dreamland comes into play israel man no never into dreamland. Dreamland was good. It got to a point where i think it changed ownership and got too big too fast. It's just if you go to greenland on a random tuesday. It's it's fine if you try to go on alabama game. They're before they're going to hand you a bunch of dry ribs because they just crank the heat to move units the place to go in. It's it's not tussles actually northport. Which is the talent one town over on martin. Luther king is called archibald. It looks like some guy's house and it is my favorite ribs in america. Really wow yes right. Number two is the college of charleston in charleston. South carolina. My rodney scott. The guy. I mentioned doing doing stuff there that they've got some. I believe one of the original guys from franken barbecue has has opened place there. So i'll get a shout out to my dad's favorite place because he grew up in charleston. And this is a place that does not. The barbecue. Snobs probably are huge fans of but robert's barbecue little mustard base pork sandwiches. That was what. I was raised on if we had you know if we if we said we're having barbecue that was what you had. You had pulled pork sandwich with mustard based sauce. I love mustard based sauce. By the way you've ever had reverend marvins mustard sauce by chance and not try to help. That's even out anymore but it was.

"It's not worth you hashing over tonight because we only have a limited amount of time but there were reasons and honestly what better than have him come back next year and be the MC of the whole event I mean it was a great year. Sierra. Great to put Johnny and it was great to put him in and then come back next year and he wants to the whole event. What what a great what a great way to do that. But why not just Agree on some. Reduced appearance fee. Instead of putting him into the Barbecue Hall of fame and know what I'm saying I there no fee but I'm saying. In. Lures. Putting man. The very fabric of the Barbecue Hall of fame he's done nothing to get into the barbecue halt faint. See, and I'm gonNA leave this year. But when we started it three categories in one category was. A face and we tried and it didn't honestly go over all that. Well but I stand behind our decisions if AGAI GUY IN I. barbecue was food and he does a lot for food it. It's it's still paying off these in the Barbecue Hall of fame I'm sorry you didn't get in Greg is nothing to do with it. I. Could care less. You gotta come up your ass about my kidney. Yes you gotta be kidding me. All right. So enough of the Shenanigans Ron, I pulled up your last appearance here on this show and believe it or not just been four years since you are on the show and sponsorship segment was the sponsorship segment which by the way still happens to be a very popularly downloaded portion. Also one that as I just talked to folks at random they will reference the sponsorship segment. So but I mean, you know your segments have always been one of the more popular ones anyway way you took part in a lot of roundtables as well where you were very free in charing all your information so. Long Way to get to what's Rodman up to. Absolutely nothing. I've been hiding out here in my house waiting for covid nineteen to be over. Doing, projects around the house and in in the art I haven't cooked anything only in the house barbecue and honestly. The grossest boring thing to tell you what I've been doing lately. That's about it over the last four years. I, mean not just the I mean everybody years socked right. But I mean for four years you haven't been hiding out. I cooked good until May of of nineteen. And diagnosed with prostate cancer that nobody knows it up, announcing it on you. So really and we did radiation into the fall, and then it took me some time to recover from that, and then before this season could get started covid nineteen hit. So just laying low the closer Sheri's working from home I'm actually in her office a duped, you got completely different setup than the one that. You and I practiced on earlier Yes. He does stuff behind the scenes folks So I'm sitting in her office because there's some carpet on the floor I'm using her career buds so that we've got a little better audio and know trying to make a go this well I mean it sounds great and the background is exceptional. There's no wall smack which I certainly appreciate from an audio standpoint. So you just said, you just announce here on the show that you were diagnosed with prostate cancer. So I mean prognosis wise You know where we add them, they get everything and it's you know now gutting through this whole making sure we've gotten all of it out The accompanying processes. It's it's funny Greg. I don't feel like I ever had cancer really, but I was definitely diagnosed with it. Actually I was diagnosed at eighteen in March of eighteen, and then a year later, they did some testing to see. You just disappeared. That's all right. Don't worry about you just keep going. Sorry sorry and and and then we did a one year checkup and they were like, no, we thought we could just watch this for a while, but it's time to do something. So we picked radiation because mostly because of my size and So we start I started radiation in July of Nineteen went till September twenty third of nineteen. So it's been exactly one year. You never know I mean they just keep testing you you never know I guess that it's one hundred percent or advocated you're in remission and and you're you're you're I'm sorry bouncing my leg telling you this not that comfortable but you. You you just keep checking your number as long as your numbers are good your PSA than then you're in pretty good shape. So I, the radiation I went in there every day for forget the number numbers is now but. I was in there with guys. There wasn't a soul in there that was twenty years. Close to my age they were all at least twenty years than me, but it's fine. It's over it's done and things are mostly back to normal and then Kobe hidden I've been sitting here doing not that much. You had quite a scare with Sherry and her own issue. There are a number of years ago and thirteen you. So we had talked about on the show and you know things that you were feeling at that point in fact you. Now around six years later, and it's you now having to go through this. So mean what kind of Of a dichotomy, is that to be a support system and a champion for your wife and now all of a sudden, you're the one facing something pretty substantial How do you overcome that and what were what were the best days like in what we're the darkest days like? I I want to skull due for a moment I'm in Kansas. So you use big words like dichotomy confuses me. So you need to dumb down just a little bit. You know I gotTa tell you the whole prostate cancer thing was like. A cold I mean it just wasn't. There just wasn't that much to it. I went in every day five days a week radiation treatment straight through and. It lasted like six minutes at a time I don't remember the number now but. All I had with fatigue at the end. There's some there's obviously some other side effects that come and go and but compared to what show you went through in twelve and thirteen. This was this was a blip on the radar. In fact that whole thing with her being a now noun organ transplant patient is what makes us probably more cautious about the whole pandemic thing she's working from home. The last thing I wanted to do is go out on the road and Cook a contest and then bring it home to her that would be really bad. So we just decided the best thing I could do is just maybe take the year off. So that's what I'm doing. Do you foresee then I mean we're all assuming let's say that the the year turns and there's more normal than. What we're used to at this point, do you think you'll be back out competing fifteen twenty thirty times or like how do you see pellet envy getting back into the competition saying I'm not sure I will honestly I I I'm not sure. I. I haven't. You know. How. Many years we started in one wrist are competing no to so two, thousand, nineteen. You know seventeen years of it of competing sometimes thirty, thirty, five events a year plus the other stuff we do. Honestly, it was burning me out. You know we went so hard to know nine I turned around and tried to repeat in town and Mike Wiesner to Al, beat me that yearly up second for team of the year and and then we were still, I think we're still top ten in eleven and then he just started become ground honestly took on the sponsorship and so it was more about business and and now. I'm not sure Greg to be honest with you I. I love the People I, love doing it. I love all that but it's work and I'm just not sure that it's it's what I wanNA do going forward. So. What do you see? Yourself doing that I mean I think people still associate rod gray as that barbecue guy as you mentioned, you were so prolific at it for a decent chunk of time a team of the year runner up as you said that you're after..

"From one of the most respected barbecue journalists in the Biz and as I mentioned in the open September is Barbecue Hall of Fame Barton Barbecue Central Show guests hall of fame month. He's in there as of last year. So we race back to the hotline and welcome, Back Hall of Famer to this show dirk riches eder. Hey Greg. Hearken Back Derek twelve months ago. Dare I say when your life changed for the better but at least the average, but I'm going to hope the better what what are some of those first? Things that rush over you is rely as you re live making it into the barbecue central show guest hall of fame. Well the fame yes. The recognition factor people's adulation forever. Just can't go on public anymore. Right I mean is that why you moved from Salt Lake? Salt Lake to go to Austin to live in obscurity. He because since. Rights nobody goes to Austin nothing's happening there. Yeah. There's nobody down here knows anything about barbecue and that's why I'm here as. Well I mean, right. Man's got a remain as anonymous as possible that family to worry about all these great things. So pay an opera I just had sylvie curry and we were talking about the American barbecue showdown. So I would hate to presume that you've sat there and watched all of the latest barbecue stuff that's arrived on Netflix but you're a respected journalist that's all part of our jobs here to keep a finger on the pulse. Oh a have you watched everything both the chef's table and the the barbecue showed up. Yes I did watch both shows. It's actually sad to say that finished the showdown Saturday morning well, I'm right there with you because I didn't know between Sunday and today I mean, the the normal workday for me so I actually have to fit in settling peterbilt's for a living which is what happens during the day in the real bills so I had to binge through Friday night and then most of Saturday as I was prepping through here so it was a nice distraction hall. You've seen all the TV shows over the many years through that Golden Age as I had referenced with Sylvie and even before that, you had outdoor living your life network and all-star Barbecue showdown all versions from Jon Marcus at that point before he had left in season whatever it wasn't barbecue pitmasters and it became a complete catastrophe. But what was your thought on the American Barbecue Shoda? I think all in all it was was actually a pretty good show, I think that. They they a lot of uniqueness to thanks like. Well just. Changing the proteins changing the way the competitions were worth. I mean. It's one thing to sit there and say, Hey, we're gonNA. Do you know Standard Barbecue Competition for eight straight weeks and say who you know or something along those lines? I think they're kind of mixed it up a little bit better I mean you know these sort of cooking reality shows are pretty formulaic but. You know it got my interest and you know like I said like you were saying, I've seen all of them. So I thought it was a pretty well could put together. Really. Do, you think there's some kind of. Fascination. Or that perhaps the competition barbecue or in general I'm just speculating with a broad stroke here or painting with a broad stroke here that they somehow feel slighted or discredited or I should be on any kind of barbecue related cooking competition because that's what I'm known for to have been Sylvia's an accomplished cook. I mean she hasn't won the world championships and ten in a row and things like this but I mean she's worn grand championships she's been successful at a world championships. So not discrediting it all but there are other people that have done a lot of winning but I feel that there might be some kind of a sour grape going on with. Only. Folks that you would know as a kcbs Cook or be cooked not getting in on these opportunities. Well I. Don't I don't think the producers of the show. You know think about that as their target audience. So you know they're looking for something is going to have a broad general appeal. So they want out the variety of people You know we when you're the barbecue community, it's like, yeah a lot of names stand out but soon as you walk out of that community. Those names aren't really well known. You know? So. Yeah. People can be upset that maybe you know bigger names from the barbed, the competition roles should have been in there but we've had those shows too though and You know that's been good I. Think you know there's kind of a desire to make it a little bit. You know more maybe more a little more approachable plus. You know this isn't being broadcast on a small American. Cable Channel. This is netflix's netflix's thinks global audience. So I don't think that that's what they were looking for. I. Think that they want that you know a wide variety of people. Did you think it's a national natural progression for this kind of show to end up on a streaming platform like a Netflix's maybe could have been Hulu or you know whatever else is currently available but is it a big win for this kind of show for the industry to land on Netflix? Yeah I. Think it is because I mean look everyone's going to go streaming. Two three years now I don't think there's going to be like an NBC it was just going to be peacock. It's just kind of the way the futures. And it also kind of puts it out there and says, well, if Netflix was willing to invest in maybe it's worth investing in. You know. They're kind of the trend setter and streaming. So it it might actually encourage some of the other services as well. Some of the other networks to say, maybe there is something worthwhile here. Richard joining me here on the show Derek riches dot com is his website where you can find his writing than reviews on all the other good stuff. Can you name two or three highlights of the show that really stuck with you standing out above and beyond or whether it'd be a competitor or particular challenge what have you I you know A. Let's see. I thought it was interesting but you know. What it is structured that way you know in a Soviet was talking about the fact that they all met with a psychologist to kind of go through. You know this is a reality TV thing they look for personality types. And you think they're trying to weed out.

"You have the ability, the unique ability and opportunity to go against the best that are out there find where Darren worth is going to be this weekend fine. We're Travis Clark is going to be this week, pay that entry fee, and then you can see where your barbecue stacks up. If that's what you want, you can't do that anywhere else. So within that time frame, it was just like a magic golden era as I call it a barbecue, it's started to trend down but. Everybody wanted to hear about it. Everybody wanted to listen to pitmasters talk about all that and over the years it's changed it's become more backyard focused. So that's what I've done. I've now made relationships with authors and Bloggers and people that have way more ability and skill to put together recipes than I do, and so we talk. But that certainly we do talk competition still but. Twenty twenty for everything for business for podcast women it's all throw away. You can't look at this year and try and forecast out into next year. I mean, it's a it's a nightmare. So we'll just see how it goes, but that's the show in the nut show. So speaking of like barbecue competitions and champions in pitmasters and whatnot You recently announced the Barbecue Hall of fame. I. I honestly didn't know there was such a thing. Can You? Can you explain that? Well don't feel bad. Malcolm Reed didn't even know that the Barbecue Hall of. Fame was the thing until I told them last year so. I I mean, Malcolm Reid is how to barbecue right of extremely popular youtube site. Go. Check him, out. So he's got like a million subscribers. So when I said to Malcolm a year ago, like did even know there was a Barbie doll of Amy's like now I didn't. So it's not surprising that most people don't. So especially if you're not like into it, so it's basically a a hall of fame where. The best of the best are dominated and three or pick. Then put in every year it's been happening. It's been happening for a long time. Originally, it was started by the guy that was running the barbecue forum that was the name of it, which was also message board. And some other guy out Niwa and they put together with some weird online presence and five or six years ago maybe a little longer than that. The American royal bought it. And they started to take over from there and it's morphed into a couple weird things and it was really my biggest issue with the barbecue. Hall of fame in the beginning was a they put guy. Fieri in the Barbecue Hall of fame. Else go without. Make sure that this is a Waterford crystal clear I. Don't not like Guy Fieri I. Love Guy Fear. He's a great talk show host. He's a great food host is great writer. He's a great business entrepreneur graded every he should not be in the barbecue. No idea what. Other than if you WanNa give me the whole. Well, he does diners drive INS and dives and he exposes people to Barbecue restaurants. Okay but that's IT and. As she get you into the Barbecue Hall of fame but I know exactly why it happened and it's pulls at the very fabric. So I always say. If I ever get in in my speech. I will say my first order of actions to get guy out of the bar. Ejected from the barbecue immediately when I say that on of every. Do you think if you ever got to I, don't know if he's spoken to him or not. But would he agree with you? One hundred percent would agree with me because I guy is there any reason that you should be in the Barbecue Hall of fame that you know of and he should say no I mean I have no idea why he would argue that he couldn't argue it would be the worst interview in history. Listening please come on the show we can have this I asked Michael. Simon when I sat across from him and did an interview a couple of years ago in Cleveland and I did you know Guy Fieri is in the Barbecue Hall of fame and he laughed out loud. His first reaction was yours west I didn't know there was a barbecue hall of fame and I said, you know Guy Fieri was in it and he's like no and I do know why he would be in it and he's like no, and he laughed laugh- like like laughed. So it's a it's a weird thing. So anyway, it's it's held once a year. There's a nomination period which is happening now until you know some point towards the end of March or whatever it is, and then during the opening time, you have the ability to submit a name. So let's say I think you know Jay has done things that earn him nomination into the barbecue, famer, west or Frankie for that matter everybody's available, which is the other problem I have. Ever anywhere ask the general public for their input I mean, that is dangerous. You get guys like me in the Barbecue Hall of fame if you're asking. For their nominations but anyway, that's how they do it. So you have all this time to nominate. Then you answer some questions and give you reasons why Jay or West frankish should be in the Barbecue Hall of fame, and then you submit it then that comes to a close now they have a panel that takes all of the names that have been funneled in and. They whittle those down to a finalist of nine, and then those of the nine three of the top vote getters and the current living barbecue hall of fame members are the people that vote. So the top three of the nine get voted in and make up that class of the BAR-B.-Que Hall of fame that year and who are the three that were inducted this year. That was Aaron, Franklin? And does Ray Robinson of cosy corner, Barbecue.

"Episodes, you're locked because there's going to be hundred thirty episodes coming up on Friday. If you listened to the show last week. Right about this time you heard me take a run at my good pal. Meathead for his extremely lack Luster Barbecue Hall of. Excuse me a lackluster Barbecue Hall of fame nomination for me. Many of you emailed and message me over the course of the week admonishing me for being so rude. Look at the overriding theme through the messages was that I should have been way more grateful that he even bothered to take the time to do. well as I said last week do me the favor and don't buy. If, it's going to be like that, don't. Don't do it in fact, in fact I, don't like to pull out the band, Card. But I ban any of you from nominating me going forward. If you're going to produce and send such elementary nominations with my name on them. In fact, kids in elementary school laughed at how crappy the nomination for meat had was so please don't tell me what a Dick Im because I wasn't falling over myself with thanks to meet head. The bottom line is if you aren't going to sell me to the committee. Why bother I don't make it down the road because of number of times nominated I need to I need to be one of the nine that makes the most sense for the folks that make that list. And by the way, and May I repeat answering one of the questions with the answer I have no idea is not doing me any good. Bristow. Is, my good friend. Jim Rome says it's not helping him. And he introduced me to Tony Tacos pickles and peppers, and they're delicious. Even my kids like Tony Pockets, pickles and peppers. The really delicious. We're talking with Vail Bradley here on the show cozy. Corner, bbq Dot Com the website and this is Desharnais robinsons daughter, who was just inducted into twenty twenty Barbecue Hall of fame. So this is a family business. Obviously I mean. We're through I mean. Are we at four generations? Now? That are involved in the website. Then is a little young, but. The when they're here. They some of the older ones can can do things around here, but yet it's four generations. Do we see a time where. Somebody in the family is not going to have an interest or has as there always somebody coming up. That is in the restaurant that likes the food that is bitten by the bug, or has the love and the passion that will continue this on for you know decades and decades down the road. Or that's certainly an option that's left up to them. It's here. It's available if this is what you WanNa, do because you need him. If you. If you got to be in this business, you need to want to do it. or it's it's going to be hard to do. My son came along when he finished college. and he came in, and he's now pretty much running at all. When I finished college, I came back and I worked. For a little while with at and T. and worked here and then I, let at, and T. go completely and came on in and then my two daughters they they support us my oldest daughter. Is in education, but she does. The Banana pollutants that we sail, and then other things he can do to help see the. And then my youngest daughter is will work for a while, but she's going into nursing now so. "So that was pretty cool I was. Excited you know I think right now. It's really actually means a little bit more. Since everybody's kind of down in the dumps with everything a little bit, and it's like you know like a business struggle and raise having a hard time like it's kind of. You know pretty pretty cool for me, but really I think I. do a pretty good job of maybe not paying much attention to things like that I'm always Kinda. Real Kind of like you know I got my way through things. Like Oh. Yeah, that's a tool. Word, Neto and not not really read into it too much and think about it too much but I'm super duper excited about about the hall of Fame I. Think That's way cool. Does. Does anything. Speak to wear the general visibility of the Barbecue Hall of fame rank amongst the general public like if it's something that you don't think about or like I'm the first guy that's texting you for me, it seems like the hall of fame should be holding. Something a little bit more. Weight. I'm not saying that you don't think it's a big deal. You said obviously a big deal but I've talked to any number of other people who either a didn't know. There was a barbecue hall of fame or be did know the process or how people are selected or where all this other stuff, or maybe because it's so new, it's just something that needs to gain a continual steam. thoughts on addle. now I think it it. You Know Barbecue, Kinda what what we all do it granted barbecues far more in the mainstream now that it's ever been charged like restaurant barbecue, and it's so competition barbecue, and but you know like Kacie B, asset, Ibca and all those little. Little pockets I think they're still maybe not super duper mainstream so maybe the general public. You know they don't maybe know about these things but I think within certain circle obviously. That's what's going on That's that's when people are really into. I certainly have known about this thing for a long time since the beginning I think it was started. Five or six years ago or so I mean when the American royal took an over, but it believe it or not existed online originally is just some kind of an online presence that remained fairly stagnant for for some time, a originally founded on good terms, but just didn't really go anywhere until the Royal Got Ahold of it and has now. Yeah, made it into. Into, what it is certainly partnering with the show over the last couple of years and releasing names, here is really added gas to the proverbial fire, but getting it out there and getting people more aware is only going to increase visibility. Would would you say that you would show up for the whole ceremony and and make the speech and all that you're looking forward to that? Oh absolutely. I was actually there the for the year that. Oh Gosh. I was a I was a went to the WanNa. Say was the first year that they gave out. The the hall of Fame Award I was actually there at the ceremony with hanging out with some friends. I've actually been there before and I would I would love to go back. was that the year that they put in Guy? Fee Eddie. Right yeah, so that would have been the first year that the American royal took it over. So you'll be there you'll be. You'll be making speech. It'll be great. Does Ray will be there? Obviously Joe John Davidson so that'll be the classic. You're going in for his sense. You're going to be there any chance. He might take a shot at the American Royal Open. I've never cooked on the dark side before. More at. It's at the race track now so it's either all the dark side, or.

The gasoline and the diesel from the oil is what makes all the profit. The butane the kerosene. Propane that's kind of bonus money for refineries but yeah the companies out there figuring out how to squeeze a couple extra bucks at everybody on every propane trank. "Pivoting and trying to make sure that he is leading the way in this regard so me that makes it easily in my book next up no questions and no qualifications needed desert. Robinson is in as all you guys said. I mean she is a staple of the Memphis style of barbecue. I think when you think Memphis style barbecue aside from the high level of dry or wet ribs you immediately go to cosy corner and you go to rendezvous for the places that are just iconic Memphis places and disarray is certainly more than deserving she should be in and rounding it out for me. Top Three Darren war from I was smoking. Look the Best Competition Barbecue Cook. Ever let me say that again. Ever Tuffy is in the hall of fame. Chris Lilley is in the hall of fame. Mike Mills is in the hall of fame. Melissa Cooks in is in the hall of Fame Darren Ward should be in before any of those people. He's one more than the only thing that Darren hasn't won is Memphis in May and Garin. God goddamn T- that of Corona virus twenty twenty wouldn't have happened. He had it in those crosshairs and probably had a pretty good chance of taking memphis down. He tried it once last year. Wasn't but give them another shot. Maybe three shots. I think there's a pretty good shot that he takes Memphis and then if he takes Memphis a made the omega. I mean he will have won every big competition not to mention all of the other general barbecue competitions that he's one plus. Ray said and everybody else's alluded to he's been very successful in the Barbecue restaurant. Business has a number of those the tremendous amount of catering hires a lot of people there and the the moines area. Oh by the way does anybody realize the thousands and thousands of dollars. This guy has given way prize money that he is given away to various pediatric Foundations through some of the affiliations that he has Through Like big PAPI smokers. When he competed at various barbecue he has donated back his winning checks. I'm sure he probably hates the fact that I'm talking about this. But nobody else was going to say this. He's not just a competition cook and oh by the way to go talk to him in Daniel Ray. I'm sure you can attest to this. This isn't a guy that plays close to the. He'll sit there and tell you everything he does. So He's not writing a book because he doesn't want to write a book but he will tell you everything if you wanna ask him and if you WANNA pay attention to ask the right questions. These not sitting there holding anything to the vessel. Tell you whatever you want so guy to me is if those other guys and gals are in the Barbecue Hall of fame. Then there's no reason that Darren worth wouldn't be in in two weeks time. Those are my three. Thank you courageous. Courageous know are you. Are you courageous enough to then take those three and a textile to your friend? Eric Frank. Vote your final stuff. Of course Dan. We can't make courageous and then only be courageous. He's got one hundred expressions and he'll show them all in a matter of thirty seconds. You know so it gets a little. When he comes over to our house at night he gets a little grumpy. So that's why do breakfast business now? Instead of night visits because he seems to get a little more cranky when he comes to visit. Papa me So you know we we just over breakfast time and these happiest could be more than just like me. Get Him One. He's happy no doubt about now tomorrow. Darren we're going to be unveiling exclusively here on this show. We like to do the nine semi finalists for the two thousand twenty Barbecue Hall of fame. That class of course will be introduced in three weeks time after that on the twenty seventh you give any thought to getting into the Barbecue Hall of fame. Is that something that You I guess everybody would like to have it happen. I guess if you're in the industry but if it didn't happen would you even think twice about it now? I'm I'm not enough to be there. You're not old enough to be Chris Lilley's in there. I don't think I'm old enough to be there. I can you know you know the one thing about the Barbecue Hall of fame and I love the program and I love everything. That's happened The only the only issue that I have is. You know there's people on the inside and all you know that have had changed the sport forever but maybe not in the public eye you know for instance old Dave Old. Dave stamper out of Indiana. I guarantee Dave has taught more people how to barbecue than anybody else. But nobody's really ever heard of it. The old timers no of him But the but there's guys like that that their heart and soul was just into teaching and it wasn't about classes causing money. It was like hey come over here. I'll show you what to do for years and years and years so I I'd like to figure out some of that spirit. I mean I think I think Bill Arnold should have been there a long time ago. you know. He's one of the guys. That's the most deserving I mean think about blues hogs think about blue's hog and competition barbecue. I mean is there been any other product that had such a profound effect on competition barbed view as blue. Yeah no doubt I mean I think you say competition barbecue in the mind. Just kind of immediately goes to blues hog or Many of the other attempts add blues hog that are probably carrying a different label. I mean it's certainly a brand a flavor that has gone on for the one was the first time you used it or even heard about it. Oh I mean it was. It was years ago. I mean I BILL. Arnold used to deliver it to me In the back of his truck and was funny he would he would show up and he'd run these routes and he'd stop here at TNT landscaping hog as by redoing acne. And He'd show and the cases would be all wet in the back of his truck from raining and he was. He was making that sauce in his kitchen. You know and and we would. He would make it specially for us even as early as two thousand three two thousand four. You know we weren't. We weren't getting the something that was made. In fact rule gives us something that was made Kim and that happened for years You know until it got so popular and thing so Yeah been around a long time. There's things like that like smoking guns Barbecue. You know so it was a great mentor. Remind he's another one that should be on that list about how he's changed he was he was my original mentor in the restaurant. Business and in the competition world so You know and so when I truly good friends and usually talk at least every other week I if not be attached about what's going on so well. Those seem to be the pinnacle products. He was smoking guns hot. It was blue's Hog. I think similar NDOC was was in there as well like those. Were the pioneers right head. Country is well head country. Yeah I always. I always tell people you know. Today's rubs You know kind of they all have the same thing I mean. There's not much those were the original and I think you know not taking a little bit back to using some of those you know and there's certain things like you know smoking guns hot that you know they've they've made a little change in there made it because of me. 'cause we actually use that revenue restaurant we buy politics the time and we had You know we had a deal that customers kept talking to us about MSG and and how bad MSG was and certain things and they kind of caved into the pressure and said hey token you make me make me a batch of smoking guns hot with no MSG and they had to kind of reformulate a little bit and then fill thought it was a pretty good idea Of this for himself to just kind of switch over that whole Labor well what he didn't realize that it was a detriment to a lot of barbecue cooks Without having MSG but you know. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to announce but I have the first box of the new smoking guns hot original formula sitting in my car right now all right well we'll Anxiously await your social media review when she gets your tongue on that no doubt about so I mean obviously you guys would be you know pretty far into a competition season at this point or at least getting your feet wet. What do you miss most about competition? Is it the camaraderie and seeing those old friends and Getting to those contests you really like. Whether they're bigger not while I just the people you know just hanging out with the people Second of all it's the food you know. I mean it. Just you know almost brings tears to my eyes that we weren't able to go to Hammond. Louisiana Pensacola Florida and kind of do that annual trip. We always do and just eat our way along the coastline and seafood. And get a you know. Stop in and see our good buddy. Kevin Greenbelt is the butcher shop. Even though I don't really buy stuff he's still a great friend of mine. WE JUST. We just have a good time and we always stop there. And there's you know going down to Toronto and seeing Brad and getting some Buddha and cracklins and Just everything about it. I mean it's just it's tough but you know the fact that matters. I really haven't had time to even think about competition barbecue. Today was kind of the first day that I really sat down for a second and say wow. Where did that go? You know where. Where do we go from here? Because I haven't even looked at schedule. Truthfully I mean I know it's going to be a very compacted schedule. I think it's going to be like a NASCAR race. It right at the end that we're GONNA be going every weekend strong in August September all the way through the end of the year outside of the competition. It appears you might have filled some of that hobby with collecting bourbon bottles. You like a. What's more expensive Barbecue competitions or Burgh unskilled. I.
