"So Lisbeth here's a question I have about you, and your cat blackjack, you are allergic to cats. I'm allergic to cats but you're far more allergic to cats. And yet you have a cat. Yes. I am allergic, so even though I love my cat blackjack, I probably don't pet him as much as many. Cats always have to wash my hands of mmediately after but I love him so much that I would never you know, want to not have him just because I'm allergic, so you've ended up as a cat owner. Yes, I did. Now Gretchen, there is something I don't love about having a cat. And what is that cleaning up? Blackjacks litterbox is why Armand hammer created cloud control litter. There's no cloud of nasties. When I scoop, it's one hundred percent dust free free of heavy perfumes and helps reduce airborne dander from scooping. So what happens in the litterbox stays in the litterbox new cloud, controlled cat, litter by Armand hammer. More power to you. I'm Gretchen Rubin. And this is a little happier. I know I know I said, I'd come to the end of my fascination with Dolly Parton. But apparently I have not. One of the things that fascinates me about Dolly Parton is that I think she's so underestimated. Of course, she's a superstar and celebrated. But I think that people don't appreciate how thoughtful strategic and far-sighted. She has been during her decades, long career, and in all of her accomplishments among other things, I so admire her absolute clarity in her sense of herself, and what she wants and her supreme command of herself and her public presentation. From what I've observed, she's very skillful at turning interviews the way she wants and maintaining a certain playful image in the public eye. I wish that over the years interviewers had asked her more thoughtful questions, and pressed her to speak more revealingly about her ideas, and aspirated, for instance, I was very struck by one fleeting moment. In an interview she did with Barbara Walters way. Back in one thousand nine seventy went Ali, part, and was just thirty one on the Barbara Walters. Special TV show, Dolly Parton is looking as she always does with a big blonde wig, a bright turquoise outfit. Big turquoise rose, in her hair, lots of makeup or over Walter literally asks her issue, gives her measurements. And here's part of the conversation where Dolly Parton is describing her attitude towards show business or no, exactly. Let them do. And I can. Change it at any time. Or I'll make more jokes about than than anybody. Because I enjoy, I know like I say, I am sure of myself as a person I'm sure of my talent and to me, and I'm sure of, of my love and for life. And that sort of thing, I'm very content. I liked the kind of person that I am. So I can afford to piddle around and do diddle around with make-up's and clothes and stuff because I am secure with myself when you talk to me, and we've talked a little bit today. Do you feel that we're very different? Not so much, because I feel we came from different places different backgrounds, but I, I really can relate to you in many ways, probably more than you might relate to me. No fake. I mean, I think that if people took the two of us together, we have very different women and yet we let you very easily. Instead of just agreeing with Dolly Parton in kind of a condescending, way, I wish Barbara Walters had asked, and why Dolly Parton do you think you do relate to me more than I relate to you? I'm sure that's true. I'm sure the Dolly Parton did relate to Barbara Walters. More than Barbara Walters could relate to Dolly Parton. And I think it speaks to Dolly Parton to genius. And I suspect that deli pardons answer would have given us a great insight into her perspective. The lesson is the millionaire, we shouldn't take people at face value. We shouldn't underestimate people just because they look and talk in a way that's different from us. I'm Gretchen Rubin. And I hope this makes your week a little happier.

Even though he knew at the time that it might guarantee that he'd be a one term president. We are warning something greater than one, man. In some ways, we are mourning an ideal because president George H W Bush was the last of the greatest generation such respect for the physician the institution of the presidency saying what a what a special person what a patriot what a person of service to this country, and I've just incredible DC volunteering to serve worte. Oh. Congressman vice president president all life of public service. Donald Trump has been a life of service to himself. They both believe that the presidency is bigger than themselves, which is not something that this president always adheres to. I think this is also a twenty four hours to nostalgia about one leadership used to look like in this country. There's a great clip from nineteen eighty when George H W Bush is challenged on how tough he goes and talks about toughness is about having values and standing for them being principles toughness is not attacking the understood that the press wasn't the enemy of the people. And even said, basically at the end of the day, we're all in this together. And I will be here for you. Just like, I know you would be here for me what remarkable difference between one thousand nine hundred eighty eight and two thousand eighteen as a candidate. Let's stop that before it gets any worse apparently behind the scenes, according to one of the New York tabloids this morning, it was really ugly and joy Behar reported to really go. After Megan McCain and say, she can't take it anymore. She's thinking of quitting is the word the begins with a B. According to those reports glad you're with us. Twenty four now 'til the top of the hour. Eight hundred nine four one Sean if you wanna be a part of the program. You know, it's amazing. It's a phenomenon. Now, you know, the very people the party referred to George. Herbert walker? Bush has a wimp he doesn't know how to use a grocery store scanner how could anybody be that out of touch committing crimes and accusations of crimes, Iran contra? A how dare he pardon individuals in- involved or caught up in an attempt to save Americans and not talk or discussion at the time. And how great the Reagan Bush economic and foreign policy record happen to be twenty one million new jobs created longest period of peacetime economic growth, Gorbachev the wall comes tumbling down with George H W Bush president, but the phenomenon of oh, just absolutely destroy. Somebody say everything you want to say about them. Every mean thing you can while they're alive, and then when they die while you try to create the veneer put a veneer on a bipartisanship and say nice things. Oh, and then use him to in the current guy in this case, Donald Trump Bill. So Riley is with us you've interviewed all these presidents, including Obama, that's something. I never got to do. And so you have a perspective. Unlike a lot of other people, do you agree with my analysis? John McCain Ronald Reagan, George H W Bush treated one way life and then bludgeoned. Then praised when they die. But not a nice thing was ever said before. Yeah. I mean, I think we can focus in on McCain, and and Bush the elder because that's very recent. You know last night on Bill O'Reilly dot com do analysis every evening, I read the two letters that President Bush the elder sent me with the caveat that I was not to make them public until he passed and one of them is about press bias, and this was written to me on December eight th two thousand seven I'm just going to quote a paragraph. He goes deer Bill. I I agree with you about national press bias are, of course exceptions. But for the most part, I think is clear favoritism for the liberals. And for the Democrats. Of course, I may be biased because some like the New York Times day are the worst mercilessly hammer, the president my son all the time. And I don't like it. You ask about eighty eight ninety two I felt it got much territory mediate ninety two. I don't recall any advice on dealing with the press from my friend Ronald Reagan, and he goes on that he wasn't treated fairly and neither was his son. But now in an effort, and it's pretty transparent to diminish President Trump. They're saying good things about Bush like, well, we didn't really like them then. But at least he was civil and now, look what we have the interesting on the Bihar front is, you know, when I was on the view few years ago. Bay harm. We'll be Goldberg walked off the show, by the way. That was one of the greatest moments that no histories, which is great for me guys took over. I thought Barbara Walters are gonna have a heart attack. But I think I think they may leave that show may may quit because she's basically now descended into the world of hatred. A pundit, she's not a comedian. She's not a hostess she's a hater. And I think that, you know, Megan McCain called her out pretty effectively and solution. We're here to talk about a great, man. President Bush the elder and all you wanna do is use his passing to bash Donald Trump, and I I don't want to sit for it. I don't wanna hear it that was pretty strong for Megan McCain, and and they had no comeback other than I guess, you know, it was like everybody going. You know, what enough? I mean. Whoopi Goldberg I happen to like. Yeah. She's not his team. Now. I mean, she just got out of there. We'll take a quick break. We'll do. Do that Armageddon was about to happen now? But look, I don't watch I showed neither, you know. Nobody listened to us watches it. It's just clips on the internet that we see it's it's a hate fest. Now, it's well, you know, it's amazing to and a lot of people don't know this. You're like a savant when it comes to television numbers and ratings, and I don't have the knowledge and ratings and analysis in my mind that you do and what one thing that surprises people. I was having that big fight with Jimmy Kimmel Twitter fight my last one I kind of put it away after that. And he ended up apologizing because I was hitting him so hard, but you know, Howard Stern. I hurt him coming on. And he was being fair and his best friends with Jimmy Kimmel the numb fine with that. But he said why is Kimmel responding to Hannity a cable guy probably Hannity wants to be on the broadcast. And I'm like my ratings are twice as high as his what are you talking about radio? It's three times. Well, Kim a lost that in and it's not about ideology, it's about look Americans. When they when they are listening to. Media person matter who it is. They will tolerate an enormous amount of BS, but they don't want you to be unfair. That is the real if you look at the cable news ratings, the the people who succeed over time, they might be conservative. They might be liberal, but they're generally perceived as being fair, it's the haters who go down in flames and Timo came across as nasty. And you know, I know can I was to the first lady. Yeah. Any a good guy. I don't know the guy I like him. I have to say I like them. But I thought I think which happened to him and now he'll bear he's running third and late night. And all their numbers have collapsed, by the way, you on a daily basis on epilepsy beat all of them. Okay. So late nights out what it used to be for the networks aren't billed at my point. Is that these networks daytime get nothing? It's the numbers changing world. That's for sure. But Kim allots because it was perceived by the regular people that he was basically being nasty. Unnecessarily nasty some Alania played a game. You're only going to get the ideologues and it's not enough late night. And honestly, the only reason I engaged I thought it was so over the line cruel mean and Milania was just reading a book to children, right? And he just went mocking her that Ben actually they don't want. They the American public don't want Milania Trump dragged into this mess and disparaged. I gotta take a quick break. This is important a major hotel chain announced a massive data breach. That exposed to five hundred million customers. That's right. Their identities now breached involved unauthorized access to the hotels guest reservation database, and includes names e mails payment information, even passport numbers, which can then be used to open or take over Bank accounts and much more. But as I slowed down, I got it down to three hundred commercial fucking landing right in the fucking glide path right on the numbers and fucking bag. The left on delta eight. Am I instructor goes, that's the best land you've ever done becoming one with the helicopter and I turned around and my wife's in the back in her headphones weren't working and she didn't hear it. And you know what? I hate to say it. So it was like, it never happened. And it was literally sitting there like a five year old talking to my mom going there. Did you hear that? Did you choose like. You know. There's a part of me that actually thinks she did here. But the keep me in fucking line to keep me keep chasing the fuck and carrots. She acted like she didn't hear it. So anyways. Moving along. I want to thank everybody on the cast of breaking bad and better call Saul for doing the heavy lifting and telling the stories and all that. I mean, I was having like. Nightmares about hosting that and meet turning into the real version of Chris Farley. That character he would do Paul McCartney remember you, you, John Lennon. You guys wrote the white album. Yes, Chris, yes, I do. That was awesome..
