"While Hernandez was on trial. The patriots won Super Bowl. The team road through Boston streets on dunk boats to celebrate pass throngs of cheering fans. The parade ended at city hall less than a mile from the jail where Hernandez used to watch those boats from his cell window. As the trial went on prosecutors described carefully orchestrated execution style, killing they said, Hernandez had arranged to meet Odin Lloyd the night of the murder, then drove him to a remote area and shot him six times. Police found keys to a car. Hernandez had rented in the dead man's pocket. And there were surveillance video from inside Hernandez's house showing him carrying what appeared to be a gun shortly after the murder one thing they couldn't establish a motive. But it didn't seem to matter after deliberating for six days. The jury reached its verdict. Is the defendant not guilty of murdering earthly grading or guilty of murder in the second degree. Letter in the first degree. The jury found the crime was not premeditated. But they did find evidence of extreme atrocity will cruelty. Hernandez dropped into his chair his face blank Jenkins sitting behind him cried. Uncontrollably. Odin Lloyd's mother seated on the other side of the gallery cried to after the trial on the steps of the courthouse. She thanked her heavenly master for Justice being served. Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Life was about to change big time for Aaron Hernandez eight days after he was found guilty of murder. Hernandez was transferred to Sousa Baranovsky Correctional Center. It's a maximum security prison, forty miles west of Boston a sprawling place surrounded by razor wire. And it was nothing like the Suffolk County jail at Sousa inmates spent about twenty hours a day in their cells stiffening the place to be the maximum of the state. Horrible place period. Darryl Jones knows a lot about Sousa Baranovsky. He just got out of prison after thirty two years for a wrongful murder conviction. The last nine years he spent at Sousa he'd see Hernandez in the hall now, and then and sometimes in the visiting room. He lived actually originally own gray side, I live on the green side. So you live on different size. They separate the gains. And so the Latin kings, and bloods and different games. Live on that side and GD's and Crips live on the green side. He was always respectful to me out respect what him in speaking. It wasn't like AM to big Spiegel. We didn't speak he spoke. So he was cool. We don't get to hear from Hernandez directly after this. The department of correction would not release phone tapes from his time at the max, they also refuse to let us visit the prison. But we did learn about his life there from hundreds of pages of records. We were able to obtain and from people close to Hernandez for one thing. He started getting in trouble almost immediately within his first few weeks. He was caught with the fresh tattoo on his neck. He also served as a lookout during a fight. He got sent to the whole segregated from all the other inmates for ten days in two years at Sousa. He was moved to twenty three different cells, Darryl Jones says that's a lot prison. Records say Hernandez was a member of the bloods Jones says it was more likely to Latin kings, Hernandez wrote letters asking to be assigned to certain cellblocks at one point. He asked for cellmate because he was lonely alter no, avail, Jose Baez. His defense lawyer says Hernandez got other inmates attention because of who he was well prisoners are going to test. Did you all the time, and they're going to try and make a name for themselves and Aaron was a target for that Erin constantly had to be on guard for that? And lucky for him. May was no pushover at first tornadoes wanted to hire by his to appeal. The Odin Lloyd conviction. We'll Aaron wrote me when he was in jail, and he asserted his innocence after a conversation with them pretty much leave it out for him. And I said, listen, the olden Lloyd appeal is great, and you have some issues here. But it doesn't mean anything if you lose this Boston case. And if you lose his Boston cases coming next to impossible to get you out. So in February of two thousand seventeen Hernandez hired by his along. With the local lawyer, George leeann tire to represent him in.

"baranovsky correctional center" Discussed on Dr. Death

"Hi, it's Laura Beale the host and reporter of Dr death. I'm here with a fellow reporter Bob Haller. Bob is a longtime sports reporter for the Boston Globe. And for the past few months, he's been assigned to their storied investigative spotlight team. He and his colleagues at spotlight have just completed an investigative series called gladiator about the life crimes and death of the football player. Aaron Hernandez. The six part series premieres from Wendy and the Boston Globe today with the first two episodes available. Now, like Dr death gladiator is a deep dive into the story of a very troubling individual. In this case, a famous football player who was convicted of murder and assist him around him. That in a lot of moments chose to look the other way rather than addressed the red flags. We're going to hear a bit of the first episode in a few minutes, but I'm excited to talk with. Hi, Bob, thanks for talking with me today, Laura. Thanks so much for having me on. Can you first tell me some about the series to give me the overview and what it covers while you know most people know the globe spotlight team for exposing the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests and the Oscar winning movie about it. But the spotlight team has a history of breaking new ground on on the stories of notorious figures like the Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. In this case, there were a lot of unanswered questions about Aaron Hernandez, who, as you know as a star of the New England Patriots. We wanted to know how he went from being a kid, a youth football player who everyone's seemed. Everyone said, seemed happy on the outside to a killer and then a suicide victim. One of the things in in the store that I looked out with in my mind, it revealed just as much about the medical system as it did about Christopher Dench. Can you tell me some things about the world of. Football that your story revealed that maybe the rest of who does watch the game? Don't know. Well, I mean, a your story. The medical board is tasked with protecting the health and lives of patients in very high stakes stuff. You know, in in football, we choose to watch it and it's, you know, it's an entertainment business, a huge entertainment business, and we we all as a culture buy into that. And so we all have a sort of a sense of a stake in all of this. And and so the whenever the football culture promotes exploits players and sort of discards them like, you know, exposing disposable chips. I mean, that's all that's something all of us should be aware of and concerned about an, especially when we're learning more and more about the toll that this game is taking on on men who play it. Do you have any recordings of Aaron Hernandez? Spotlight team has obtained hundreds of recordings of Aaron Hernandez himself talking about his life, and that's going to be fascinating. For people to to hear. Thanks for talking with me today. Thanks so much, Laura. It's been a pleasure. And now here's a bit of the first episode of the new series gladiator, Aaron, Hernandez, and football Inc. And while you're listening, go subscribed to gladiator on apple podcasts or wherever you're listening to this or find a link in episode notes that we'll take you there. It's an incredible story on America's favorite game. One difference recorded.
