"If you've visited an urgent care recently you might have noticed a busy waiting room. The latest surge in cove in nineteen cases has more residents even those who are fully vaccinated visiting urgent care centers with cold or cova symptoms. That's according to dr elizabeth. They lost so baram. She's the medical director for med stars. Urgent care system and also serves a clinical role as physician at urgent care centers on occasion. She spoke with colleen graphic about the increase in demand at urgent care centers this summer and what that means for staff. I know at least in dc during this delta variant surge. Our hospital capacity has stayed at a level. That's maintainable but what was happening at urgent care centers during this rise in cases so You're right that this delta surge has not necessarily overwhelmed hospitals with kobe volume. The good news is that a large majority of people in our area vaccinated so there if they do get sick. They're not ending up in the yards of the hospitals but they are ending up in urgent care. And there's also a lot of other viruses going around our as v flu etcetera. And every time anyone gets a sniffle or cough understandably they wanna be evaluated because they want to know if they have. Kobe won to protect their loved. Ones to know if they need to quarantine in for their own piece of mind so those people aren't ending up in the emergency room because they're not sick enough to be there which is great news but they are ending up in our urging cares and so our volumes during this delta surge which is really our forth surge in urgent care since the pandemic started has us up to one hundred fifty percent of our typical volume even in our busiest winter months. And seeing that in. The summer is hard for us when we weren't necessarily expecting it and we have certain pockets that are seeing up to two hundred percent of their typical volume in particular southern maryland. Pg county and baltimore have been really the hardest hit urgent care locations for us during this this last surge. Wow and how does this impact the staff at these centers dealing with this on a day-to-day basis. I know that thank you. Healthcare workers was a really big thing back in the spring of twenty twenty and it's kind of died out now But i'm wondering how they're holding up and what the burn out is like. It's a really good question. It's really tough. I think out is prevalent for all of us Leadership it down to frontline front desk associates and medical assistance in frontline healthcare workers You're right that at the beginning. We were healthcare heroes. And i still think that way i address my team as healthcare heroes every day But the public in the community has has stopped that mantra a little bit and and really words. Don't go far enough at this point because when you're working day in and day out exposing yourself and potentially your family to co vid we're seeing healthcare workers give breakthrough cases of cohen. And you're working a lot more hours than you. Typically would not getting the typical summer break in volume that you might otherwise see it really wears on people so we're doing the best we can right and now looking towards the fall which were kind of already and kids are back in school. What are you as a healthcare provider anxious about or worried about so much but You know fall. Winter is typically our busiest time in urging care so with all the other viruses says that occurred during the winter months with people being inside more more likely to spread things. I worry that what we see now could snowball into a fall winter surge volume from other viruses and from the spread of kobe from both kids being together and more people being inside. I'm hopeful that when you look at other countries and their delta surges and how long they lasted and we look at our our own trends with delta and cases that may be this surge is starting to plateau or even decrease and we'll go into the winter with a new nater which could help us but my fear is these kind of go on top of each other and lead to an even bigger surge so we can't handle.
