"Now of these giant Chinese property companies? So I think there's a real divergence between Chinese property companies right now on one hand you have people like evergrande that are still flailing and we're still waiting for the inevitable restructuring of this massive company that is a massive debt in debt indebted, developer. There's little signs that Beijing wants to salvage this company or it out. And on the other hand, you have companies like evergrande banki and country garden and some of the state owned developers that are having more access to credit, the country is standing behind them. They're part of this package bailout package where they have more access to loans and credit. So I think what the country stands is right now they're going to keep hold of some of the selected few good quality developers stay back developers and let the smaller ones all face out. Okay, very interesting. So then what of homeowners I mean you mentioned either the revolt by homeowners who didn't want to pay mortgages for properties that they weren't getting hold of a work being built would have property prices and the homeowner story in China. Well, the protests peaked last year around summertime and then Beijing focused all of its energy and prioritizing completion of construction of these pre sold homes. That's what companies like evergrande and all of the developers are doing right now. That's where the money is going into to make sure that these homes that were pre sold are going to be constructed. So people who paid down payments for these properties will have a place to live in. As of demand, I do think that it's still weak right now, the slump persisted in December despite these measures, this basket of measure that came out a month earlier. Also going to this year because the shortage in supply and also weak demand, I think the home sales figures might not see a drastic increase as people also are hoping to see. Okay, Lulu Chen in Hong Kong, thank you so much for bringing us up to date on that story. We'll have a check on the markets for you next. This is Bloomberg daybreak Europe for most of the world economy. This is going to be a tough year. Tougher than year, we live behind. We will have inflation. Grow the economy, reduce debt, cut waiting lists and stop the votes. The idea that after 13 years of failure have been come along in the 13th year and say, I've got 5 new promises. Please give us one more chance. I just feel it's so far. Removed from reality. Bloomberg daybreak, Europe, on Bloomberg radio. And at 6 30 a.m. here in London good morning, I'm Caroline Hepburn. And I'm Stephen Carol, you're listening to Bloomberg daybreak, Europe. So we get the key U.S. job data out for December later today, that's something the markets are paying close attention to, of course, three 71 is where we stand on ten year U.S. years down about a basis point. And stop features are more positive S&P 500 even if futures up three tenths Europeans stop fuses for gaining 6 cents of 1%. You've had 6 days now of gains in the Asian equity market and the blue McDonald spot index is flat to slightly stronger this morning. So those are the markets that we're watching out for. Our top stories this morning, the U.S. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has again fails to win a majority of votes for House speaker. That's just by offering party dissidents a simpler way to iced him should he get the job from a White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told Bloomberg radio ahead of yesterday's vote, so there's still a route to a deal, but with the Democrats. At some point, the left wing of the Republican Party, the idea appropriator, some of the social moderates go to the Democrats and cut a deal and say, look, we've got 25 Republicans, we will offer you a compromise candidate. I've used tread opt ins names such as a friend of mine, and he's a moderate Republican doesn't mind me doing this. They say, look, we want Fred as speaker. You guys all vote for Fred and what we'll do in return is we promise no investigations. There's no subpoenas. We'll do legislation, but no investigations. That'd be a huge win for the Democrats and a reason for them to support a coalition candidate. That's former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney. This standoff in the house after 11 rounds of voting has left Republicans fractured and is frozen all other business in the chamber. They'll reconvene later today. And now here in the UK, the key nurses union wants the government to meet it halfway on pay. It's a sign of softening positions ahead of more planned strikes later this month. The two UC's Kate belts is that the government are launching an attack on the right to strike. You as a worker could vote in a democratic ballot to take action to defend your pay and your employer could tell you that you have to go back to work or otherwise you face the sack. This government's gone from clapping our key workers to threatening to sack them. BET you see represents a broad range of unions, their comments come as the government plans to legislate against key workers striking so that is the latest on pay. China is planning to relax restrictions on developer borrowing dialing back the stringent so called three red lines policy that exacerbated one of the biggest real estate meltdowns in the country's history. Bloomberg understands Beijing may allow some property firms to add more leverage as well as pushing back the grace period from eating debt targets the easing could mark the most dramatic shift in China's real estate policy to date. And when it comes to the Federal Reserve, the St. Louis fed president James bullard says that interest rates are getting closer to a high enough level to bring down inflation. The point of this is that we've gone all the way back now to the pre inflation shock level of inflation expectations, macro theories tell us that that bodes very well for the future. And actual inflation. So this is a good signal for disinflation in 2023. Although Bella doesn't vote this year, it's another central banker suggesting that they are content with staying with the high level of interest rates. I think it's really important to note ahead of those U.S. non farm payroll figures that we get out late and say that rates traders may have the mancha don't fight the fed, but it does seem that they are and it'll be really important to watch the pay increase for December nonprofit payrolls. Yes, and another central banker who's talking about higher rates is the government of the bank of France, Francois villo the Gallo, who's been saying the European Central Bank, should complete attention to interest rate increases by the summer and be prepared to hold for a potentially sustained period after that, plenty to discuss after the break when we joined by Stephen Gallo, European head of FX strategy at BMO

"Driver's reports. And with us in the Bloomberg interactive brokers studio is Michael McKee, he's international economics and policy correspondent for Bloomberg news. All right, Mike, I want to start with what we're hearing in terms of the chatter tomorrow because if we take a step back and look at the markets, volumes are up, but stocks not really going anywhere. So I think it's fair to say, we're kind of waiting on a big number tomorrow. We're waiting on a number which would have been considered big in the past, but it's not going to be considered big in relation to the last 18 months or so of job growth. 250,000 consensus is well below the three 75 average of the last 6 months. So you can play that round or flat. I suppose, is it either a disappointing sign or not disappointing sign. What seems to be happening is a lot of companies are saying they're still having a lot of trouble finding employees. I mean, we're still seeing the jolts numbers that we got earlier this week. It shows that there are jobs available for people who don't want them, but it goes back to the question that I keep asking you over and over again, Mike, if you're fed chair Jay Powell, don't you want to see it cooling off. You do. And we are seeing signs in just about every economic indicator that the economy is cooling off. Now, a lot of people on Wall Street are taking that as not cooling off, but heading straight into recession. The problem is we don't know what the line is between cooling off and recession. So the fed is saying we're getting what we're looking for now, except because of the reaction in the markets, we're seeing people violating the old saw. Don't fight the fed. I mean, the bond market is totally fighting the fed right now. And that's hurting the fight against inflation because financial conditions are getting looser. You're speaking my language. Yeah, it really feels especially the equity market too. Just rallying a little tepid again today, but really a big rally this week. I want to talk about recession though, because we got an interesting Bank of England decision this morning, of course, hiking by half a percent biggest rate hike for the BOE since 1995. But you also heard officials warn of a long recession. And I don't know, put this into context for me. Would we ever hear something similar from the fed? It feels like the BOE said the quiet part out loud. Oh, definitely. And it is not something I think you'll ever hear from Jay Powell. In part because of our markets being so large and so important and if they react badly, that's going to be very bad news. You look at what happened in 2013 with the taper tantrum when Ben banki Bernanke just said we're thinking about raising rates. You can imagine if Jay palaces were going into a yearlong recession with unemployment double-A. Pandemonium and inflation going to 13%. Yeah. So I don't think you'll hear that. It was interesting that he did that. A lot of debate about why they have an election underway now for who's going to be the next prime minister. And there's some thought that maybe he was sending a message to both of the candidates that they need to bring the fiscal into it because the Bank of England's forecast did not take into account any sort of fiscal help for the economy if it goes into that kind of recession. Okay, so we probably won't hear Jay pal saying. We're going to enter a yearlong recession. No, probably the only thing you get from Jay Powell that's similar to what Andrew Bailey said is we don't know what's going to really happen in the economy because it's all about the war and energy pressures. And that's true for central banks in every country. So okay, so if you read through the tea leaves there, I guess between the lines. I'm not sure what the metaphor I want to use here is maybe we've heard some hints from pal that things won't be great. But we continue to get a parade of fed speak. I'm looking at some headlines that hit from Loretta mester, for example, talking again about the fed resolve to curb inflation with rate hikes. I mean, if you look across the lineup that we've seen this week, it feels like they've been pretty consistent in their message. And their argument is that their message hasn't changed that the market heard it wrong from J Powell when he had his news conference and he suggested that they were no longer going to give forward guidance and that they could go up or down depending on what happens with the economy. They're going to be data dependent and everybody in the markets decided that meant they were going to be dovish and they could cut rates and they priced more of that in. And they want people to know that inflation is their number one job and they are going to continue raising rates and if we get CPI next week that's tough, then they might go another 75. We'll have to see. The interesting thing is that the fed doesn't know any more than the markets do, but the fed doesn't have to put money down on it except for once every 7 or 8 weeks. Katie just asked you four questions in a row and send me a chat that says I want to ask another question. And I said, no way, I got one minute left, and I got a question. Yeah, you're not going to be invited back. Can I ask my question? No, no, right. Before you kick me off. Call me after work. So Mike, if it's a really hot number tomorrow, that's bad news for the equity market, right? Because that essentially says fed's got a hike more. Fred's got a hike more. And the other thing is, is that if it's even the number that's expected, it's not going to necessarily be good news because it keeps the fed on the tightening track. They don't have to worry about falling the unemployment rate rising and jobs falling. They can keep focused on inflation. All right, you got 20 seconds, kitty. Is there going to be a dot plot in September? In September, there's a dot plot. But we're done with forward guidance. What's the point? They would argue it's not forward guidance that what they're doing is telling you where they think the unemployment where they think the fed funds rate will be under the economic policies that each one of them. Okay. Proposes. And there's 19 of them now, so the market takes it as forecast the fed does not. All right. We got to leave it there. So I started calling him sippy cup because you look at Joe's schedule. It's not very rigorous for president. He usually has less than one item on average a day on his schedule starts at 9 30 likes to be up in the residents by seven. And, you know, get his warm milky his night night story and his sippy cup and go off to La la land, But he's clearly being propped up and I don't know why the sippy cup thing is just kind of taken off. And then I, actually with somebody on my staff ordered a sippy cup and I showed it with the presidential seal and everything. And, uh, everybody is like I want to buy one. I'm like I'm not in the business of selling sippy cups. So anyway, last night we were kind of messing around and the idea came up of what about a song? Like Toby Keith doesn't really cool Song Red Solo Cup. It's a fun It's sort of college drinking bar party song and just change the words around a little bit and and accept. We'll call this one Joe Sippy cup instead of red solo cup and that means so we send it over. Last night or this morning to Joe PAGs, and he gets it done in like less than two hours anyway.
