"This is the news in brief from the United Nations, the trial of a paramilitary commander who is accused of carrying out or ordering crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Central African Republic began on Monday in The Hague. Muhammad said Abd Al khani, a top ranking leader of the Seleka militia, pleaded not guilty to all charges which relate to atrocities carried out in 2013 in the Central African Republic, capital Bangui, before the crimes were committed from late 2012 to early 2013, Seleka militia advanced towards the capital, attacking police stations occupying military bases, capturing towns and regional capitals, and targeting suspected supporters of president Francois bize. They seized Bangui in March 2013, and with forces numbering up to 20,000, looted homes while searching for sympathizers of mister Bozize and shot those fleeing in the back or killed others in their homes. Mister Carney's charge sheet includes imprisonment, torture, persecution, enforced disappearance and other inhumane acts, committed in bangi between approximately April and November 2013, he oversaw the day to today operations of an infamous detention center, according to the court, and was operations commander at another, where he kept a list of persons to be arrested. To South Sudan, where deeply disturbing violence is escalating all over the country, top independent human rights experts have warned women and girls continue to be gang raped and survivors have been described as zombies, physically and emotionally dead, according to the UN commission on human rights and South Sudan, in an alert commissioned chairperson yasmin sukka, said that it was critical for the international community to monitor the country's peace agreement along with other reforms, including of the armed forces and the constitution. Transitional justice bodies are also urgently needed, as per an agreement made four years ago by the country's government, the commission noted, without these steps, we are likely to see millions more South Sudanese displaced or crossing borders, creating havoc for neighboring countries and aid agencies, the independent rights panel, which was established by the Human Rights Council in 2016, said that women raped by armed forces while collecting firewood are threatened with death if they report it, often the police are too ill equipped to do their job, and they can not arrest a soldier who's better armed and protected. The commission said, in a recent statement. Torture is systematically practiced in Venezuela and its sanctioned at the highest level to suppress opposition voices, the Human Rights Council has heard in a new report head of the independent international fact finding mission on Venezuela stated that two state intelligence agencies were responsible for crimes against humanity. In addition to torture, the agencies, one military and one civilian intelligence service carried out sexual and gender based violence, arbitrary detentions and short term enforced disappearances, the rights report continued. The highest ranking officers of each agency report directly to the country's highest level political authorities, the Human Rights Council heard, while the report also noted that most victims were officers and former officers of the armed forces or their associates. Human rights violations by both agencies continue to this day, according to the report, which maintained that the agency's are part of a system designed and deployed to repress opponents. "Don't have any more. And then chucked out ten internationals in a $591 million starting lineup and ran a hall over swindon. Really, a testament to how peerless cities squad depth is. I do love swindon for some reason kept relentlessly trying to play the ball out the back blast and the star as you mentioned for city 19 year old Cole Palmer, a local boy from within shore, saint patch of Manchester, which birth Marcus Rashford, krib midfield force, England and the 23 star Pepsi and if he were Phil Foden's son and thus pep's own grandson and he looked, he thought there were moments in this game, David, where KDB and Bernardo Silva just fed him the ball, and while I have a ghost of, yeah, that was great to watch so many. I mean, that was one of the highlights that, well, one of the other highlights of the weekend for me as an infant is so many like good young English players on display up and down the league. And you know, being brought along, not only by their managers, but also by the senior players on their teams. I can't a 100% confirm this, but I believe I believe there are a couple of moments in that game where co poma levitated and floated around the field. His feet did not touch the ground on some of his runs. I think and he just kept swindled the fenders turning in side out mixing in a stunning stunning assist and a fine ruthless. Let's just say food and esque finish. The loveliest moment when they perhaps and once swinden supporters will always remember 78 minute Harry mccurdy steamy in on goal slap the ball through Zack safin, celebrated deliriously with home fans, many of you thought Harry McKay also plays the bad guy in Karate Kid three. I can't confirm or deny that, but his face of joy after screwing a meaningless goal that meant absolutely everything at the same time. Just savoring the moment of screwing it is defending the champions that that was sheer magic city march on, the league of said this weekend's massive rumble against Chelsea will go on despite their COVID outbreak prepare ourselves for a trig Royal Rumble. Liverpool forced Shrewsbury town won the shrews actually had the audacity to jump out to a 1 mL Anfield but a Liverpool team comprised of players barely old enough to buy papa jokin sigs did score back goals from paid Gordon Roberto Firmino and fabinho double put this one beyond doubt much to the chagrin of shrews mascot Lenny the Lion. League One Shrewsbury. The pride of shropshire. I think we know where shropshire is, David. It's sort of no, no, it's not. It's shropshire is like a little bit further north than west. It's almost like Midland. Isn't it like a toffee part of the west Midland like country car? It's right on horseback. A little bit. It's on the Welsh border. It's a little bit more agricultural than that. It's not Oxford. It's not gloucestershire. It disrupts got a little bit of street Cred. You'd like shropshire rod. We're going to give a shout out to all of you in shropshire because you gave me possibly the most delirious 7 minutes of my weekend. Definitely top ten delirious 7 minutes off my life if I'm being honest, we'll get to those, though, you can clock back on the touchline, but his team depleted by Afghan, injury, COVID, max vault, who looks like he's so young he could be Anthony Gordon's son. Curtis Jones was actually the senior player up top and the game. Was he devoid of rhythm or meaning, Liverpool dominating possession without any real cutting edge up top until the 27th minute, which we could do an hour on this goal on this podcast or better plenty of time on the left in a lethal cross and udo. Split the little defenders. Can you tell by my voice, I love this, stabbing the ball home. What a tasty finish and charged towards a Shroud be faithful. Till limbs dropped a kind of sui. And stood in front of them as his teammate faces when he watch it. His own teammates couldn't hide their shock and joy. Udo just stood there in heroic statue pose, fully aware. He just become Everton's player of the season probably of the decade if I'm being honest. David for 7 gorgeous moments are floated above the clouds. Oh my you and cold Palmer. I love it. Yeah, unfortunately it wasn't going to last long. Yeah, GFAP at sports o'clock tweeted, I think roger Bennett was probably the only person on earth who thought one they'll Shrewsbury was going to hold true that. And E what resistance was obliterated 18 year old Conor Bradley, who ended up with two assists set up 17 years and 96 days old, the cade Gordon wriggled to create space finished with real quality, Richard jolly noted. Liverpool's equalizer, the first goal in the history where scorer Kate Gordon 17 and a sister Conor Bradley 18 had a combined age that younger than James Miller. What a fine goal. "If you cast your mind back to last year, you will recall there was an exceptional prolonged Siberian heat wave as a result of this heat wave we saw devastating very widespread Siberian fires and we saw massive sea Arctic sea ice loss at the end of the summer season. The heat that we saw in Siberian in 2020 would have been almost impossible without climate change. In addition to the record Arctic temperature, the UN agency is verifying a new high in the Antarctic of 18.3°C, and of reading of 54.4°C in the world's hottest place, Death Valley in California. The headlines there are now two Central African Republic, which is home to a great initiative to take on COVID-19, when coronavirus infections and deaths surged there in early 2021, the UN World Food Program launched a toll free helpline in June at the request of the authorities. Today, the phones are ringing off the hook at the call center, and that's because it's become the go to place for people worried about staying healthy and also for those who want trusted information about COVID in the face of so much misinformation. To tell us about it, here's Francis Corona, head of the world food programs, emergency telecommunications cluster, speaking to me from Bangui just outside the call center. So the idea to have a COVID-19 call center came from the Ministry of Health, the objective was to provide the local population with the means to report symptoms of COVID-19 and be able to receive useful information from train medical personnel about what needs to be done in case of suspected cases of COVID-19 and the overall objective is to reduce the spread of the virus and provide timely treatment to infected persons. A lot of people call the COVID-19 headline. Second for information about the vaccine, where to obtain the vaccine and we also have vaccinated people calling the help center what needs to be done when they have those side effects as a result.

"Now it's time for our closing segment. Chabad table talk. Listeners have gotten used to steffi and is sharing a short reflection of our own at the end of each episode. But i'll be. I just want to know what's on your mind or even better. Was the talk of the town there in jerusalem. Well last robot was a big moment in israeli sporting history. As gymnasts li annoy ashram one. Israel's third ever gold medal in the first one by a female athlete and to say that i found myself reminded of one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies airplane in which a flight attendant is walking down. The aisle offering passengers reading material and one of the passengers asks for something right. She's handed a pamphlet that reads famous jewish sports legends. So the joke obviously is that there aren't very many of them. Jews are not known for their sporting prowess of course. We know that there are some and we can name several of them hanged greenberg's in the mark spitz's and the sandy colfax is of the world and perhaps more recently israeli athletes like only caspi the basketball player. But it's been quite a few years. Since israel has been a part of the olympics. it was really only in nineteen ninety-two that israel won. Its first ever medal. After having been a part of the olympics for about forty years at that point and up until this olympics israel had only one. I believe nine medals in total and added four more during this game's being obviously the most successful games in israel's history including two golds and two bronzes so israelis were of course cheering for all the athletes. And of course we're proud of all the achievements but there's nothing quite like hearing tikva. Israel's national anthem played twice in the olympic stadium to bring joy and great excitement to the hearts of israelis and jews around the world. So that's what i've been thinking about. This year's olympics really did put israel on the map of jewish sports legends. Will there be or or have there been ticker tape parades to welcome back the israeli olympians. The truth of the matter is that israel is now in what we believe is a fourth wave of the krona virus and so no ticker tape parades but they did receive a hero's welcomes at bangui airport. And i'm sure that there will be plenty of opportunities to celebrate both illinois ostrom and artem dogo piazza's the other athlete. Who won golden. I'm sure they'll be other opportunities for that as well. You mentioned illinois. She was absolutely stunning. Her floor routine was breathtaking. I have to say. I kind of found it annoying to wake up every morning and see a headline that simone biles would not compete that day. I really wanted to say what part of i'm out. Did you not understand people. And then she goes and owns the balance beam and wins bronze. of course. But i really thought we needed to respect and honor simone's decision and also recognize that there were other really talented gymnasts to watch and annoy was one of them. She was to shelby. Be lucky to win bronze medals. We're not competing in the olympics. Exactly as someone who has just recently embraced kayaking. I can confirm. It is a feat of strength. Wet jessica fox of australia. Another jewish olympian did winning a bronze and gold and the canoe and kayak events. I didn't even know those existed in the olympics until this year and it runs in the family apparently her mother and who was also. Her coach also won bronze back in the day. Truly remarkable and then of course. There was the israeli baseball team who didn't win any medals but entertained and endeared themselves to all of us who are watching. Would it be rude to call the my new lovable losers doubt the chicago cubs have renounced that title on for. They'd embrace that. But i wanna go back to that clip in airplane. Why does everyone get that joke. Why are there supposedly so very few jewish sports legends. Well look the jews have long been known as people of the book which by the way is not a moniker that we bestowed upon ourselves. Actually something that comes from. The jewish presence in muslim lands were both jews and christians were referred to as peoples of the book but sporting was never our strong suit in many respects there in fact competing views even in the bible about the role of physicality and how much that should be emphasized in a person's life on the one hand they're quotes like the verse from zachariah lobe high of aloha imbera bureaucracy not by strengthened not by force but rather by my spirit says the lord god and then of course there are other quotes like vanish martin o. than of sorta. You should guard your body. Your life zealously. And that i think is those are two very different views of the role of the body versus the role of the spirit. And so i think jews have long had a nuanced perspective on this. And i'd like to say that we can actually have it all because on the one hand. We now have thirteen medals. Thirteen olympic medal since israel. I join the olympics in nineteen fifty two but we also have twelve nobel prizes for the state of israel which i think is a remarkable achievement and hopefully will continue growing in both areas but the spirit and the body in order to bring pride and joy to israelis and jews around the world. Avi i've always said we can have it all just not all at once. Thank you so much for joining me on the podcast. This week and chabad shalom sobat solo. Thank you for listening. In nineteen seventy seven was to clean this atmosphere to have a professional spare of the public service. And these were right good ideas that were also you know implemented in law part of the rule of law. That was very much developed. Since then was a not having conflicts of interests was having a this appleaday political very professional a public service and then in the last decade because of these different process a whenever there's there was criticism against these ideas of having political nominations and all that the first two three decades of the government of his was suddenly rose back again. Why not referring to nine hundred seventy seven. Why not referring to. The eighties whites were fighting to nineties. It's very easy to go back to bangui on when it's easy but wanted to so. I closed the brackets of that. I just have to answer your question in the about the erosion and about the erosion. The third idea that i fine was very much influential except for these two already mentioned. Is this approach that we have to have the the markets work freely with competition and we have to help the markets the government is interfering with the markets and this idea was brought in a sense that came at the expense of the other interests of civil society that as far as i understand carte democracy is to take them into account and at least take them into account so too and i expect to a prevent damaging them like environment concerns and and helping the weaker parts of society minorities pluralism and so on and so forth. Holding the line on free and fair elections in Central African Republic

"Presidential elections are scheduled to take place in the central african republic. This sunday despite violence threatened to disrupt the nationwide poll in an interview with you and uses daniel johnson one of the top officials there. Denise brown describes what's at stake in her capacity as the deputy special representative of the secretary general and stressed that rumors of armed groups marching on the capital. Were simply false. I'm in bangui today. And i've been in the past several weeks in in button for Which is the west of the centre west of the country and lindau dow which is in the southeast of the country in terms of electoral preparations and security. On saturday the national authorities lawn the distribution of voter cards. Which is the last piece that needs to fall into place for the elections which are planned to be an which will be carried out in the central african republic. Twenty seven of december so. There's elections happening this sunday. So one point eight million people have already registered to vote but we've been hearing about armed groups potentially marching on bongi. Is that still something about which there's a lot of uncertainty behavior of certain political actors notably the ex president of the country was eight with three armed groups. Friday led attacks on several towns in the west which have been decisively pushed back by the blue helmets of meniscus keeping mission and there is no attack there is no marching on the capital. They're trying to disrupt elections. They're trying to drag the country back to the game of two thousand and thirteen the international community the un. The mission government is determined the over one point eight million people registered to vote. We'll have the right to vote on the twenty seventh of december despite what spoilers are trying to currently do how unprecedented is it for the g. Five group the european union russia. The united states the world bank on the united nations to issue this kind of blanket statement. It is a very strong statement to also as you say naming a francois disease former president. International community is perfectly aligned on the question of elections in this country. it's an absolutely essential step to further consolidate a piece and the j. signed regularity speaks with one voice in his always very clear about its positions. In yesterday's communicate was absolutely essential. Pass the message to political actors and armed groups who would steal the opportunity for the citizens of this country devote as they said they want to vote. Now you like getting into the field as much as you possibly can. What are people telling you about the needs and what they hope will happen after. The poll is sunday. There's been a lot of change in this country. When i look back at the chaos of two thousand thirteen and fourteen and the violence that rain there have been significant changes but more on a macro level so roads electricity. What we need to see now after these elections is a change in the day to day life of the person who lives in a small remote village. That hasn't happened yet and so the community is still very dependent on humanitarian assistance. And will be for some time but with peaceful elections and a government in place as of thirty march. It's time now. It's time for those changes that will affect every person's day to day education work raxit nations to take hold really take hold and make an absolute difference without the help of minister. The blue helmets the un peacekeepers. Who were there. Can you get achieved what you need to get done to help the people because there is such a lack of infrastructure even though central african is immensely rich in terms of its natural resources. Central african republic is also instantly large country. The size of france and belgium put together and so the security council has given the mandate to a new sketch to protect the population in also. We have a very key role to play in supporting the election. So thanks to meniscus. Security capacity with our helmets are policing to acetate or capacity. Our technical team rea- providing critical support to the electoral preparation. Indeed to the daily life of many central africans as is the un country team and humanitarian community. I'm when you talk to the government. What do they want from you. It's not just emergency does it. They want long-term support you say the international community is unified on. Its message to andac. Doesn't spoilers for the elections. But what does the government really want from the international community moving forward. Well let me speak avenue. The international community which is we're determines and we are committed to staying in the central african republic to ensure that in every village. A family has the opportunity to send the kids to school so working on education to ensure that the children are vaccinated is a massive vaccination program being ruled out that will take many years and everyone has access to decent health. We will stay. We will invest. we will support. We will follow. We were encouraged until such time as everybody has the opportunity to live a life indignity where we all should have.

"Penguins at the Haley bay colony in the Weddell sea have failed to raise chicks to adulthood for the or even less for the last three years running. And now the colony itself is pretty much gone, which is a big deal because until recently the Haley bay colony was the second largest in the world with the number of breeding pairs averaging between years somewhere between fourteen thousand and twenty five thousand making them at any given year five to nine percent of the global emperor penguin population. So what happened in his penguins changes in C ice conditions? How blockchain technology could help developing countries creative sector

"This is Matt wells at UN news while with growth of fourteen percent per year in China alone. So called creative industries sector that includes everything from fashion design to carnivals could be game changer for emerging economies. In new report by the United Nations conference on trade and development or tired suggests in an interview with Sarah and Bangui from your news. The agency's Pamela coke Hamilton explains that these countries need to put sufficient digital safeguards in place such as blockchain technology to reap the full benefits. Creative industries includes music ashen audiovisual film jewelry design food advertising marketing cartoons animation. Anything that involves the creativity aspect of our work festivals? Of course carnival which everybody loves and so on how is the market doing for China? Very well. They have they have grown exponentially. In the last thirteen years thirty two billion. They were there at one sixty point five billion the rest of the countries are growing slower, but still going Moffat. They're going up four point three to five percent, which is incredible given that there was a downturn in international economic sphere. And consequently goods fell, but the creative industry continued to grow would suggest that it is an area that we ought to pay attention to. How can we explain China's lead in creative industries compared to other countries such as United States, South Korea? I would say the Chinese growth was four times that of the United States. It's a combination of factors one China has put in place over a very long period of time an economy that's been able to out produce other countries you add to that. Now, the intellectual property that's been transferred there in terms of design in terms of creativity by other countries, they have been able to know Marshall all of that to be able to. Re-export Selena essence, they have garnered the best of both worlds both on the production side, and on the creativity side. So that they've been able to show growth in that area much higher than other countries have fourteen percent per annum, you mentioned blockchain could you elaborate a bit on the how it will help developing countries economies innocence, what the blockchain does is it creates transparent process by which the person from the very beginning of the chain. All the way to the very end is able to see where their product is going home. It is being an in a way it tends to take out the middleman, which is also very important. So the ability to make money from your product the ability to protect IP rights of your product. This is done through digital certification. The ability to get the funds back to you through the online money, mechanisms etc are facilitated by blockchain, whereas the mechanisms now don't allow and so what you find is a lot of creatives do not get one there. I p protect. Action to their royalties or three the kind of monetization that they need. The assumption is that if developing countries are able to put these mechanisms in place, then their ability to track the monetization of their creative property will be much better than it. Currently is because what's happening now is that as you move to for example, the downloads for itunes unsawn. We lose a lot of money, we produce music. It goes to the international eight Younes or whoever, you know, the streaming platforms. They make most of the money on that. So the attempt is to see how we can bring back clawbacks some of the funds out there by creating these blockchain mechanisms to bring the money back. What's the future and challenges when it comes to creativity shoot? What's the next step two steps? I would say one is to get the debt, for example, one of the major countries I find that's missing. Here's Trinidad and Tobago. They have one of the best and most famous carnivals in the world. They're not in here, we need to get countries to collect the data and to report. So what we have. Do is help them find mechanisms to do. So the second area is how do we get them to leapfrog to the digital platform to the digital space and put in place regulations. And mechanisms I think those are the two challenges that we have I think that the creative industry has the potential to be a game changer further developing countries, but we have to grasp the opportunity, and we have to make it a priority.
