"Amid the Corona virus pandemic. One institution has forged ahead before most others, and that's the United States Naval Academy Each year, the Naval Academy takes in roughly 1200 students for a seven week physical. And mental training regimen, known as plead this summer. The goal is to turn civilians into midshipman Mark Satur Defense reporter has CQ Roll Call says this summer. That process looks a little different. It has involved a lot of hand sanitizer. Mark what you're hearing. So it seems that all these academies, including the Naval Academy, are operating at sort of a bubble system kind of like with the ENDA, but it's not as extensive. So all of the students are required to stay on the campus at the Naval Academy. All the freshmen up leaves as they're called. They have to be there their quarantine for two weeks point arrival there tested for Corona virus and that's where they're going to stay, and they kind of live and train in these 40 to 50 person family units. And the idea is that if everybody in the family unit has been tested, and he's OK, then that should be relatively safe. That of course, you know has some exceptions, right? All right, so the units don't mix. A cz they might have in the past. Correct. That's right. All right, So it's a D military academies. I guess it might be somewhat easier to enforce these rules because a CZ you said the students the pleads the cadets, they cannot leave. Unlike a student at Old ST you Right. That's exactly right, Andi. No, they have these campuses that enclosed and, you know, theoretically, there's some sort of security. The caveat, though, is that at least at the Naval Academy, the staff can leave. And that, of course, presents to me some problems. You know if the staff can leave and kind of go on interact in Annapolis, Maryland, where the Naval Academy is located, where cases are still relatively high, it's possible that they could bring the virus back onto the campus. So what's the What's the daily routine going to be like for these pleads in terms of training and testing for Corona virus? Also, Well, I'm not sure that they're going to be tested much after the initial two week quarantine. I mean, they'll train and they're kind of family units. Oh, and as you said, they won't mix with the other units, which they've done in the past for kind of intramural sports and stuff like that. But other than that, you know they wear face masks, and they kind of do their training. And I don't know. I mean, they're all housed in the same complex. But they say that if anybody has any symptoms, or has like a race temperature or anything of the sort, then they'll be isolated. "So I went back and got my masters in the my PHD in international relations with a focus on the gender dimensions of conflict violence in war fighting, and those experiences that research has given me a lot of words to understand what I was a part of why things happen to me to happen to people around us and happened in the outside world the way they did in so last. Fall at my twenty year. Naval academy reunion, a bunch of class spearheaded by sue Livia, who had been my roommate the. Adamy decided to do an all women's brunch. And this was noteworthy, because during our time at the academy, none of us had ever rarely associated with each other women. We didn't want to be identified as women publicly, you'd wanna be overly feminine form friendships with the man ward than the women to some degree at no point during this for years in the subsequent twenty years, did any of us decide to have any kind of all women's meeting had there been a picture. Graduation of all the women are class. No one would've shown up or few of only a few would up. So it's pretty noteworthy. And we had this brunch, and it was amazing. And it was the first time that I felt free to say on the woman enough rancorous I was a female student Michief, the naval academy, and it was liberating, and we all started to talk. I wrote a Facebook post about another friend of mine wrote this long one about how much it meant, and how these conversations we were only now starting to have is forty two forty three women. Taught us that a lot of things we've experienced at the naval academy in our careers that we thought we were alone in experiencing alone. And having to suffer through, we were not alone in that, in fact, probably happened almost everyone having experiences in having a forum to talk about them in some way, made a start to think that we could take voice in take this group this energy, and bring it to other classes because for so long we'd all been thinking that we were alone in having all this. So we formed the sisterhood of mother be, and mother be as Bancroft hall. It's the nickname for Bancroft hall, which is the giant dorm that all midshipmen of the naval academy Levin. And before the sisterhood mother be, and we started writing. We went live January first with a website. We do a postal week written by female graduates, a male graduate. And we are starting to podcast. We do different things to involve the community Waypoint. Wednesdays throwback Thursdays in five for Friday's kind of those things just to keep people involved in to bring them in and to generate. Interest in discussion. But what's been really fascinating for us is the outpouring of support and the outpouring of emails in contacts from not just female classmates milk classmates, but women from classes all up and down before hours after are talking about the same experiences. So many women have had those same experiences similar experiences. And so many of us that we were alone. And so we're doing this way to start the conversation to bring in the men from our classes, and amend from up and down in different years to build better leaders to mentor to network into have open conversations where the men are encouraged to become allies advocates for the cost. It sounds like consciousness raising in the purest sense of the word those sixties grucci here about feminist being in the sixties where they would come together, they would share their stories, and I would say, gosh, I'm not alone. It's not just me. It's this journey. All of us are taking. And I think it's so interesting that a male dominant organization like the United States military would be kind of coming along on that same path just later. How much do you think it is about those rising numbers? You have interesting statistics about when there's one woman in an organization, she feels like she has to protect herself. And then you get to a certain number of women in an organization and you start to see this, this coming form into gather as a group and being more, comfortable identifying by that group. Do you think it was that they're just reached a critical mass of women in the military, and that's when things really started to change?.

I think in sixty four or he showed up in sixty four. No, graduated sixty four Vietnam wasn't even on the on the radar. That's one of them. And for you guys it, you know, nineteen sixty seven nineteen sixty eight it had you you know, you had to have known. Okay. I'm going to fight in Vietnam. When you walk into mother be Bancroft hall, you go into the rotunda, which is a very large open area. And when we started losing are former classmates the graduates, I'm sure Jim explained you put a poster board up there with the pitcher out of the lucky bag and a brief bio and not a description, but where they died and. Initially. It was just onesies twosies. But pretty soon the the March went all the way around the rotunda. And they had to move it up into memorial hall. And it really brought home. The fact that this is this is serious. This is a, you know, you're making up your minds, whether or not you wanted dedicate your lives that to the defense of this country, and it might come at a considerable cost and for forty four of our brothers. It certainly did forty four c Willis didn't make it back. And. I'm sort of an emotional guy that one of the few times that I've. Really cried. Openly. And then a shame Italy. Was it? The wall. Seen seen a couple of my gutters up. There. Just really brought it home to me. Amazing. People gunners are. So that's that's what you know. You're getting into upon commissioning. And so you you get commissioned you graduate and sixty eight your classes, sixty eight right? And then you go to Pensacola, Florida is that where you go to flight school. That's right and. That's what you talk us a little bit through the the flight school path you show up. You learn to fly what a t thirty eight to learn on. No. We you start out on T thirty four, and it it's there's there's been a change in the way, they the instruct naval aviators now when we were going through you had to do the flight to the fixed wing flights syllabus first before you could get into helicopters, and then you'd go through the helicopter syllabus. And then after that those of us that got orders to Vietnam, we go up to fort Rucker and the army would instructive in tactics in armaments systems. They did they good job in prepping us, and then send us overseas and the rest of it would be done in country. So the the the training that we received along the way was was excellent that a lot of it was just like back at the academy. They told us that. Hey, guys, the education you receive here at the United States naval academy cost the taxpayer approximately two hundred and fifty thousand dollars which was a lot of money back, then and our reply was. Yeah. But you sticking up our butts nickel at a time. So, you know, you know, head you. So now, you're in the pipeline for for helicopters had you heard of Seawolf at this time were were you hearing about it? Did you? Is it something that you said, oh, I want to go do that. We were just starting to hear about it. And you know, it wasn't fully developed in my mind that that's where I wanted to go. But it quickly became. There is a a a purpose for every element in the military from the guys who's swabs. The decks all the way on up, but I didn't want to be a bus driver. I didn't want to be a guy who board holes in the sky. So this being the Seawolf immediately appealed to me as an opportunity to be able to. I don't know to pay back. It's it's a funny thing, and I'll jump ahead a little here. But I have a a cousin who is very close to me. She's like a sister to me. And I'd never really thought about questions like you just ask that after immediately after I got back from the she was driving me on out to family home in walnut creek, California, and without taking her eyes off the road. She said how can you do it? And I thought about that for just a minute and said, well, it was pretty easy..

"And it said a boot up to the to the mess hall and scored a of apple juice came back. And we said, okay, you know, you're you're all right with then after my third year because I knew I was going to Vietnam. I like like maybe the see the mid so I signed up for a med cruise got on the Saratoga USA Saratoga? And as I wrote about in this book, we graduated the the morning after the Arab Israeli war of nineteen sixty seven began. And so we we we went to we flew to rota Spain then out to suit a bay Crete where the Saratoga came in to to pick us up, and they had just met a vacuous s liberty the hangar deck was littered with casualties, some USA's liberty. And when we you know, we took the the small boats out and start bringing our gear in in gut the to the hangar deck, and and there were marine. Guards around Mr. do not talk any these people. And you know, we went up to our super forty eight of us that were on the Serta we went up to her living spaces, and that was an incredible cruise because the Soviet navy had just broken down under the med. And we're playing games with them the whole time they cross decked the liberty casualties into the America, which took them into into Athens. But it was you know, constant air ops on that carrier while we were there. Incredible learning experience. Yeah. That that's if you have it seeing Arabs on that aircraft carrier. The first time that I saw it. I was it's it's it's it's insane. Is what it is. It's insane that and that's just normal life on a carrier. And you know, the difference in same thing talking about my dad and the missiles squad of the difference back then and now was I had a little eight millimeter movie cameras, and you know, after evening meal, I could go sit on the flight deck and take pictures of flight ops. Now, you know for safety reasons, and whatever other reasons you can't do that. But I've got some great shots of some of the, you know, they are a five taken off the loose things, and we had spats on there, and that whole cruise we had a an a four they said with the new on it on the front right catapult because of the situation that was going on in the Middle East. So yeah, this is a I thought pretty pertinent here is your at the academy. And this is what you're talking about right now. But going back to the book as the Vietnam war gathered intensity, the leadership of the brigade began posting pictures and biographies of alumni who had been killed or missing in action on a large board in the middle of the rotunda. Just inside the main entrance to Bancroft hall. The pictures and short biographies were taken from the lucky bag the class yearbook from the year that each alumnus graduated the board on which the notices were placed was large perhaps eight feet high and four or five. Feet wide at its top. Was boldly lettered inscription to those who went before of us before us. As the class of nineteen sixty eight near graduation. The to those who went before us board had become too boards. And then three. High percentage of the alumni listed were either marines or naval aviators, many of their names and faces were familiar to all of us more than a few included friends and some of these were especially close. So that's a that's a reality for everyone there, especially because in nineteen sixty four that wasn't happening. And then you go to nineteen sixty eight and you're filling up this board bud every day and look at the, you know, you you look to see what the new faces are and the classes of sixty six and sixty seven and a Marine Corps hit very hard protect sixty eight. And I think I I wrote about this..

Last week and so he's going to be buried next to a long. Time friend, so there's there's, that also there's. A congressman I'll tell you about him a little, later on maybe when you saw the memorial in the, rotunda there there was a congressman That. Nancy Pelosi was helping this old, old guy very conservative Republican from Texas. Very very old guy and Nancy Pelosi had to help him to McCain's. Coffin I'll, tell you who, that guy was. We don't know then I suppose if you're outside, of Texas you probably don't know we'll we'll talk about, that some some priests I guess this, Piscopo alien I'm not quite sure some priests just stop George W Bush took a selfie with him on, on the way. Out everyone's breaking up. Mid showing Mitt Romney this in, Washington DC at the National Cathedral mitt Romney's air shaking hands. With people Henry Kissinger who actually spoke there Lindsay Lindsey. Graham like I said before he got up to the podium and. Said something for about, fifteen seconds and turned around and and left? And I didn't my Abidine is there. So if we're as they. Say where's there's Hillary so whom, it doesn't go anywhere by herself. So that means that Hillary Clinton must be there somewhere both the Clintons were at the, Aretha Franklin memorial or funeral, yesterday, and I was, wondering why didn't they split with the rotunda thing hustling. Is this today is McCain's funeral this. Is what this. Is the interment is a separate ceremony which, will be tomorrow at Annapolis, and I don't believe. We'll be broad Cast public this is the funeral, and so the, Clintons did not. Miss John McCain's funeral they are. At, Aretha, Franklin's, funeral yesterday watching that, minister feel up area Guerande this will play that a little later on if you don't know that can, traverse will play. That for you but. Then here at premier, network she had a radio show for three? Years while she was also on on. FOX that no no subtitles. Needed in regards to her opinion, of Donald Trump but this is. What she said today at the funeral He was a great man We gather here to mourn. The passing of American greatness The real thing not. Cheap rhetoric from Netanyahu will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly nor the opportunistic. Appropriation of those who live. Lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served He was a great fire burns bright Ouch so not really a lot of gray area. There about who she was, referring to and so this is you're you're, going, to hear people are gonna say. Wow, this is a really partisan funeral honestly it it was not Obama spoke, about McCain and Bush spoke about McCain and Kissinger spoke about McCain and Lieberman spoke about McCain th the only part where someone contrasted his. Life with unnamed people was that part you just heard there from Meghan McCain who say. Is a fierce defender of her father and it's funny because the first real pushback in a, year and a half of his, presidency Was a week ago when John. McCain died and Donald Trump did not release an official White House statement didn't have it ready I didn't have it Ready to go until. There was an outcry Sent a brief tweet out but didn't have an official White House statement cause remember for before you. With a pretty amazing story the short, version is as Admiral Larson the guy he's gonna be berry next to He went to the attended the naval, academy with. With the midshipmen Larsen and, Larson graduated number. One in their class John McCain true story John McCain like like his dad like like Admiral, John McCain the second like, his dad he barely graduated he had so many demerits, that when when Kane went to the naval academy in the fifties they had a ship bad the punishment Brig or something out in the Severn, river, which is. The river at Annapolis that that abuts the naval academy and he, had he wasn't in the normal dormitory which. Is called Bancroft hall huge huge hall. John McCain was out in. "Experts Six forty it's, Conway show John McCain passed away, on Saturday And. The tribute, that Brian suits put together is incredible I don't know how long you been working, on. It or if it was just off the cover whatever but it was really good and we're gonna play a little, more of that right here on KFI Senator, John McCain the third dead at the one brain cancer an aggressive form of brain cancer diagnosed a little over a year and a half ago and announcing that he. Would see some medical care for just two days ago and so the we're prepared for this still as as a admire of him still A bit of a shock now we're talking about a landscape without John. McCain John McCain the naval officer wrote a check that as far as I'm concerned Will never be cashed. Because what happened on October twenty six thousand nine, hundred sixty, seven was the beginning of an extraordinary ordeal that is almost imaginable For for anyone to To to. Imagine yourself going through he was born in the canal. Zone to John McCain the second who was the son of a junior officer on a US battlecruiser who would go on later on, to be naval aviator and then a three star. Admiral World War Two this John John McCain Who was John McCain's, grandfather his his father John McCain the. Second also the naval academy and was usually on the. Verge being kicked, out he went to the naval academy at the age of sixteen during prohibition he frequently came back drunk he graduated fourteen spots above above the. Bottom of his class at West Point and and he. Had so many demerits he couldn't even live in the main hall Bancroft hall there was a there was another billet for midshipmen who, had that many credits literally a ship in the. Severn river in Maryland He went on to. Be the commander of US forces in the Pacific during. The Vietnam war John s McCain the third went to the naval academy in the fifties and followed basically followed his father's path He he was a rebel had lots of demerits was threatened with being kicked out Even. Though his father at that point had attained the rank, of Admiral John s McCain the third did make it out. Of the naval academy and, he was basically, the same position that his father was he became a naval aviator unlike his dad but like his grandfather and was almost thirty years old before his first combat deployment in nineteen sixty seven though the US had. Been in combat in Vietnam since the Gulf of Tonkin incident in nineteen, sixty four John s McCain the third intended, for the navy to be. His career dislike his dad and just like. His grandfather but he needed combat time and so it was, on the US forest all that he finally deployed for a for a combat tour and it was on the US's forestall that one of the worst naval disasters in in peacetime Kurd. When aircraft that. We're getting ready for strike, in North Vietnam were an accident occurred in one plane There was there was the type of missile of the day called the Zuni missile and it was a temperamental missile and they had this little issue where every once in. A while with. The aircraft holding it powered up the missile would decide. To launch itself and in this case on the in in. The hangar deck of the, forest all this, missile and this is where there's a lot of people don't get this right and I don't know why because it's it's in his book and it's in the four hundred page accident report but another plane lost. Its missile the missile went right at John McCain's plane which was fueled, up and bombed up they were ready to, go McCain got out somehow. And he was helping another aviator get out. Of his. Plane when a bomb on McCain's plane blew up, wounding McCain in the legs and chest this pre POW stuff the forest all disaster took twenty four hours to control it killed one hundred and thirty four American sailors and it was a minor miracle That McCain and other aviators were not caught up in that fire, but but he had shrapnel and chest wounds he goes into the hospital and he when, he's better he volunteers to, join the US risk risking another aircraft-carrier off of North Vietnam as a as a. Mid tour as a deployed replacement. So they're losing pilots he volunteers to go, in so he joins you assess the. Risk any they had flown. Twenty two missions it was the twenty third that he was shot down McCain was horribly injured not just from the ejection of, breaking two legs breaking an arm but. The fact that he. Was beaten. Badly and then netted in the lake he goes to a hospital and the North Vietnamese we're not gonna treat him at all The North Vietnamese treated American aviators American combatants as war criminals because it was of course it was a war crime. To bomb North Vietnam but it was when they discovered who his father was because the capture of John McCain made, national headlines either I. Don't know who was, doing the upset at the time it probably should not have been a major newspapers but it was, in the major newspapers so the North Vietnamese. When they found out who John McCain was they treated, him and that that's what saved his, life there is a longstanding thing called the code of conduct it was it started after the. Korean war in regards. To what you can tell. A a cap, for what you can reveal. And all that instructs you to. Give nothing more the name rank and serial number in as per the Geneva, conventions in the American code of conduct it also outlines that there's, a chain of command in a prison camp that if you are the senior, ranking man you will take command if you were. Command that yes it, is still your duty to escape And that there is a official policy that whoever the first in is they'll be the first of that you. Will not accept parole or, favor from your captor and the men did in the Vietnam. War men did that and they they have the Mark of Cain on them. To this day the first guy shutdown was Everett Alvarez and he was the first one out this was the moment of John McCain's life because, he was dying and nobody would deny that he was given horrible care by the North Vietnamese which as it turns. Out is an actual work rhyme to a point where he was on the verge of death and then the, rest? Vietnamese found out who is dad was and then, his father to get the, the. Date right mid nineteen sixty eight in mid nineteen sixty eight his father Admiral John McCain junior the second was named commander of. All US forces in the Vietnam theater is the commander of the Americans, in, the Vietnam war this POW's dad is Is commanding all American forces that are fighting us so the North Vietnamese went to him and they said. McCain or sending you home, what did he answer I'll tell you when we come back. All right a great tribute to John McCain from our own Brian suits and. We'll come back and finish that up it really is very moving again I don't know how long he worked on it but it really was, good I'm Julius later live from the KFI twenty four hour newsroom a greyhound bus crash in New Mexico has killed. At least seven people New Mexico state police officer Ray Wilson says the crash was caused by a tractor trailer, truck? Was going eastbound eastbound lane Trump blows out a, tire crosses over the median, and. Then the bus and the truck collided head on the bus started out in Albuquerque and was headed to a stop in Phoenix..
