Larry Elder Shares His Takeaways From the Recent Education Numbers
"When you look at the numbers that we recently got on the education front, and we learned that American students fell so significantly behind during those lockdowns and shutdowns and schools, there weren't in action. What we also learned was that so many students in very poor areas, minority areas, areas that were run by Democrats, they fared much worse than the rest of the country. Is there a takeaway there that people should remember? Absolutely. And again, you look at a place like Baltimore, a Baltimore is where Freddie gray died in police custody a few years ago. The number one and number two people running the police department were black. The people who are in charge of both the county and the city public schools were black. The mayor black, 6 of the officers, three of the 6 officers who were charged were black. The state attorney who blocked the charges against the officers was black. A judge before whom two of the officers tried their cases with black, by the way, he found them not guilty. City council all democratic majority black. The U.S. attorney at the time, Loretta lynch was black. The president at the time with black Barack Obama. And we're talking about systemic racism. I'm reminded of the joke that Wanda Sykes once said, how are you going to complain about the man when you are the man? And you're finding this over and over again and in Baltimore, 13, I'm not making this up, Trish, 13 public high schools involved in the inner city, 0% of the kids are math proficient. And another half a dozen were only 1% of the kids are Mac proficient. That's almost half of all the public high schools in Baltimore were either 0% of the kids or math proficient or only 1% bar. This is absolutely horrific.

Gordon Chang and Trish Discuss the Origins of the Coronavirus
"Recent weeks, we have learned what you and I, I think we're talking about back in January of 2020, which was the Wuhan lab theory. We had certainly I think both heard from various sources that it was quite possible that the coronavirus originated in a lab in Wuhan. That theory that discussion as you well know, Gordon was shut down. Aggressively shut down and now it seems doctor Anthony Fauci may have been at the forefront of helping to shut that discussion down by commissioning a scientific study, which he basically was able to take a red pen to. Doctor Redfield, head of the CDC, was cut out of conversations because he felt it was possible it may have come from a Wuhan lab and I think he said the most devastating thing to him was when the Baltimore sun called him a racist because he suggested it might come from Wuhan. We know what we all went through. Why do you think that was? Why do you think there was such an aggressive attempt to say no, there's no way it came from the Wuhan institute of virology? My theory is that Doctor Fauci was trying to protect himself. So if we go back to 2014, the Obama administration imposed a moratorium on the federal funding of gain of function research in the United States. So what did Fauci do? He outsourced gain of function funding to a biological weapons lab in China, the Wuhan institute of virology. And he did that through the New York based echo health alliance. So echo health alliance with NIH money was actually funding gain of function on coronaviruses. So I think Fauci is a little bit concerned that the Chinese took what they learned from his funding and they were applying it and eventually ended up creating SARS CoV-2, the pathogen causing COVID-19.

We Are Failing Our Kids
"Was spending $21,606 on per people. That was the breakdown of their budget to their students spending. So an average college was about 21,000. Folks, check the numbers. That's just an amazing amount of money. Being spent on students in this level. And it's not just the younger grades that was doing this in the public school system that we had 93% of third through 8th graders also test in below grade level in Maya. You can't tell me this is a money problem. You can't tell me that all Baltimore has to do is go out and spend more money and all of a sudden you're going to get a better product. No, you're not. You got to inherit problem here. And then it comes down to another interesting issue that I say is the leadership in the schools for whatever reason. Has decided seemingly that this is acceptable because if you look at it over the years and the Baltimore school system and you look at the statistics, score changes between 2019 and 2020 and we've seen this all over the country and this is something that we've got to deal with is because of COVID because of the distance learning because of things. Bruce Elliot: Teacher Unions Want a Monopoly on Government Schools
"Glad you pointed out the home component of this. I'm thinking if I'm a parent and my kid can't do multiplication or can't add or subtract, I should I should know that as a parent and bring that to the school's attention, but it looks like we've just had failure across the board and it's not just in Baltimore city or county. I suspect this is happening in school districts all over America. Well, check this out. What was up this study? And you want to be discouraged about something. Maryland, rates as a second, most educated state in the country. This is at the same time where you have these numbers. We're seeing schools. Well, they're getting a lot of help getting their numbers from Montgomery county, Maryland, and prince Georgia's Connie Maryland, which immediately about Washington D.C.. And in that case, yeah, you have a lot of working professionals with professional degrees or advanced degrees working for either institutions having to do with the government or working directly forward the government. But you get outside that kind of specialized area, you take a look at what's happening in Washington, D.C. take a look what's happening in Baltimore. Take a look at what's happening in St. Louis or Cleveland or Detroit or virtually any urban area in this country and you'll find failure after failure as your failure and still, you have the teachers union, pushing hard against the idea of what I think is a pretty common sense thing. The money follows the kid. That if your kid is going to public school, the money follows the kid, if your kid is being homeschooled, the money follows the kid. If your kid is going to either their Catholic high school or Jewish high school, whatever the case might be, again, the money follows the child. The teachers union does not want that to happen. They want to monopoly not on what I call public schools, but they want to monopoly on the government schools.

Ten high schools, 8 elementary schools, three middle schools are 2000 students took the amount of test and various grade levels and zero students tested proficient in math. These are three schools where zero zero proficiency of these schools for incarcerated youth. We hope that you are for students with disabilities. But those are special schools. The 23 schools that they checked in this particular survey indicated with one or two students at the outside proficient in math and most of the schools had no one proficient in math at their grade level. This is a pretty grim number. And the bulls are counting numbers turned out we just want to say. So something is not working well here.

"NFL playoffs roundup. I'm Dave fairy. In his first postseason performance, Trevor Lawrence giveth, any taketh away. Denny cap has details. The Jack wires rally from 27 down to edge the Chargers 31 to 30, rightly Patterson's 36 yard field goal as time expired count the third largest comeback in NFL postseason history. Jaguar's quarterback Trevor Lawrence overcame the worst half of his career to win and his playoff debut. I didn't play my best tonight, so I'm gonna watch the table. There's gonna be so much to learn from. But honestly, I mean, you couldn't write a better script than to win a game like that. Lawrence threw four first half interceptions, three to asante Samuel junior to help the Chargers score the first 27 points of the game. He went on to throw four touchdowns, including three in the second half. Chargers head coach Brandon staley says their second half execution was poor. Anytime you're up 27 to 7 and a half time and you've got four takeaways and you end up winning the takeaway margin four nothing. It's going to be it's going to be a killer. I'm hurting for everybody in that locker room. It's a special group of guys and this is the toughest way that you can lose. The forty-niners open their postseason schedule by claiming their 11th consecutive victory. Ryan Leung was there. The forty-niners outscored Seattle 25 to 6 in the second half to beat the Seahawks 41 to 23. In his playoff debut, Brock purdy was 18 of 30 for 332 yards and three touchdowns. Having 6 games under my belt in terms of just playing in an NFL game and trying to win for four quarters, you know, has helped me get to this point and all the guys in the locker room got my back. They've all grown together. So we're ready for what's ahead. Christian McCaffrey had a 119 yards rushing, and deebo Samuel had 6 catches for a 133 yards. You know Smith was 25 of 35 for 253 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. McCaffrey says pretty showed a lot of poise for a guy who was taken last overall in the 2022 draft. He's extremely confident and he's exactly what you would want in a quarterback. No moment is too big for him and he makes corrections quickly and we saw that today and he's able to go out there and play with some juice and hit the right guys and let everybody else do their jobs. Sunday's games have the bills hosting the dolphins. The Vikings entertaining the Giants and the ravens visiting the Bengals. The dolphins with the last team to grab an AFC playoff birth. And buffalo finished with the second best winning percentage in the conference, but bill's coach Sean McDermott says his team better be ready. That's a good football team. That we've split with this year and we have a lot of respect for them in terms of what they've done and what they've accomplished this season. So we've got to get ourselves ready to go. The dolphins handed the bills their first loss of the season during week three. Buffalo was a 32 29 winner over Miami at Orchard park on December 17th. The Vikings of the number three seed in the NFC, three spots ahead of the Giants, but New York is one of the sexy pics to pull off an upset. Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell says he has respect for giants coach Brian dabel and defensive coordinator wink martingale. I've talked a lot about not only their head coach, but wink and his staff, they do a phenomenal job, their challenge to prepare for and our guys got to be ready to go and ready to go play fast against a really talented defense. The Vikings earned a 27 24 home win over the Giants on Christmas Eve. Like the bills and Vikings, the Bengals are well familiar with their road opponent. Cincinnati beat the ravens 27 16 a week ago, but Baltimore came away with the last second win over the Bengals on October 9th. Joe burrow hopes their AFC title run last season will benefit them this month. I think it's natural to call back on experiences that you've had in similar situations. So I think I'd be lying if I said I wasn't, but like I said, it's a new year new team, new opponents, and so we know what it takes. That's all last year did for us. The first round ends with the Buccaneers hosting the cowboys on Monday night. I'm Dave ferry, AP sports.

"baltimore " Discussed on NFL Live
"Dan, why did fields have so much success on the ground Sunday though? A big reason why is the variety of runs that they've started to kind of deploy within this offense. It's not just Justin go run around. There's a very strategic way that they're going to do it. First of all, it's the traditional zone read. You read the backside and you got to lead blocker. This is great for Justin because it puts the ball in his hands as a decision maker again. He goes down and gets 17 yards there. I love the fact that the end untouched. Now this is your traditional quarterback sweep. Bunch concept, but see how many people pull on this one. Center left guard left tackle and those two V blockers up front. 5 guys in front, Jackson, great vision on the cutback. Again, doesn't get touched at the end, but this is the one that everyone in the world has seen. There's one thing that stands out to me. When he climbs the pocket, his feet are in there. Both feet are off the ground right now. Just watch the acceleration that happens once he again hits the ground. This play makes no sense to my freaking brain because it's the NFL and no one is even remotely close to him. Guys, that's over three runs, excuse me, three runs that are over a hundred yards. The biggest takeaway I have, he wasn't touched on any of them. Hey Dan, you remember there's a guy that works with you on Monday morning, get up, and he said, right after Lamar, Justin Fields was the most explosive open field running from the quarterback position. What did you say? And nobody believed me? I didn't believe you, to be honest with you when you said it. And I was happy I told you that I didn't say that. I mean, it was impressive. Now he's not gonna get a buck 78 every game, but holy smokes. Here's the deal, man. This is very similar. I'm giving little guesses some credit. Yes. Very similar to what we've seen from Brian day bowl with Josh. Oh, wow. The whole premise of Justin Fields, career in the NFL, is to let him be great at what he's great at right now. I was talented until you bring those other parts of his game that need to be developed. Up to the standard. The best thing for a player when they are in the NFL or the best thing when you were within the structure of a team is for your coach to say to you, what do you do best? Right. And let's highlight that. And this is what's happening with Justin Fields. This is why I also, when just the fields was coming out of the draft, Ryan Clark said, the talent between him and Trevor Lawrence is very close and similar and we don't think it's a big jump between both of those guys because we focused so much on the beautiful passing that we don't take in totality. This is the fight that Lamar Jackson goes through. Every single week or every time we have a legit conversation about playing the quarterback position. The difference with Justin is this, though, I think Justin can develop into an elite passer in the NFL as long as he's under the right tutelage. Real quick before the tools of it. I agree. The two things he's done so far with a passer, so much tighter mechanically with his feet, so much tighter mechanically with this throwing motion. So I agree. And I think they've made everything quicker for them and that throwing motion in his feet. He's making those reads quickly and when it's not there, just it feels doesn't mind running the football, but they're giving him option they're moving the pocket. It's not about just standing there. Let's try to diagnose everything on the outside. They're treating Justin feels to me like an elite shooter. We're going to give you some layups. We're going to give you some free throws. And then as the game goes along, we're going to give you opportunities to shoot the deep ball. And we've seen that in the last three weeks, and he's played really well. We call that cutting the fat off stuff. Yeah, there's a corporate cut the fat off. Now you got to complete it. It looks lame. Too. Right. Good point. He leads the NFL and QBR for the last three weeks, so it wasn't even just this past week. He's been quite good. Good defenses too. Exactly. Let us New England. Miami. Time for one more thing. Hey everybody, let's read and react to some news from around the NFL. Derek Carr and the Raiders lost to the Jaguars on Sunday drop in a two and 6 on the season, the Vegas QB struggled to find the right words after the lost. Take a listen to this. There's a lot I want to say. You know, but if I'm honest, I don't need to say it here, you know. And there's things that will be said. There were things that need to be addressed in all those things, but I think for as a whole, the urgency, part of it, that after 30 minutes of football, we have to learn that the game is not over. You know, I feel like I've been in this situation a lot where new coaches are this or that and you have to teach the new guys like this is how we do it and this is the mentality and this is and that gets tiring, but at the same time it's my job. I mean, you almost wanted to say whatever it is that he's holding back, but my goodness. What do you make of that, Mark? One, this is what two and 6 will do to you. As a football player, also at the newness in which he spoke about, I'm sure Josh McDaniels is mixed in there. I'm sure trying to get these new pieces. Acclimated. And remember, this was a raiders team with less talent last year that entered into the playoffs because Derek Carr was playing well. Now he's got some fault in this as well. But ultimately, when you start talking about the potential of quitting after 30 minutes into a game, your problems are way bigger than execution and getting the ball to play makers. That is a problem, guys. Yeah, they did all that last year, you know, with an interim head coach. Yeah. And in a lot of it was, thanks to Derek Carr's leadership. So you're seeing him hold back there. That's very interesting. On the winning end of that game was Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars, Jacksonville trill and 17 to nothing in the second quarter, but Lawrence, nearly perfect from that point on, he posted the 98 QBR, completing 22 of his 25 pass attempts, the Jaguars scored on 5 of their 7 drives during that span. Dan, we saw him in London, they weren't able to do it, but this was a different story. It was impressive to me what stood out to you about Lawrence's performance on Sunday. Best game I've seen him play as a pro most needed game he's needed as a pro. I counted 5 big time throws out of him. That means the situation of the game, throwing under pressure, and then the coverage indoor window that you gotta do it. Here's two examples to show how good he was making big time throws. First of all, you got Trevor Lawrence having to move into pocket. Denzel pyramid, the a gap defender's gonna come up inside. He's got a shift now to his left. Great job of keeping his eyes downfield under that pressure and making that ridiculous throw to Marvin Jones, even though that's pretty good coverage. That was a four point lead when he had second 11 backed up with like 9 minutes to go. So you're talking about in the moment handling the situation and then dealing with the pressure and then making a big time throw. They're littered all over that second half. That's why he has those moments when you go stud. That's why he was the number one pick because there's not a lot of guys. That throw we just saw. I think there's 5 guys in the league that can do it. You know, you're seeing more of those moments come back out and it's worth remembering that he's almost still a rookie, right? What happened last year? This is a recent almost have to wipe it clean. Exactly. Okay, so let's get to the big news of yesterday, the firing of head coach for the cult, Frank Reich, and then the hiring of ESPN NFL analyst Jeff Saturday is the interim coach, cult owner RC Jim ersey explained why Jeff was the right guy to do the job. Let's listen to that first. I'm glad he doesn't have any NFL experience. I'm glad he hasn't learned the fear that's in this league. Because it's tough for our coaches. They're afraid. They go to analytics, and it gets difficult. I mean, he doesn't have all that. He doesn't have that fear and there was no other candidate. We were fortunate that he was available. RC, what do you make of the whole situation in Indy? Well, first of all, I want to say this, congratulations, Jeff. I wish you the best. I believe that you are a very capable human because of your character and your personality, to be in that locker room, also believe that you have the intelligence to do the jobs. Now let's get to this. Many people are talking about race. This isn't about the race of the coaches. There were guys like Gus Bradley, who are former head coaches on that staff or guys like Scotty Montgomery. So it's not about their color. This is about relationship. And that does bring it to race for this reason. There isn't the representations of faces like mine of minority faces who can build the familiarity that Jim irsay has built with Jeff Saturday. Now let's think about some of the bad things or the downsides to this. Jeff Saturday, how is he going to walk into Gus Bradley's office and say, you should call these plays, or how is he going to tell Scottie Montgomery, they're running back room should run like this when you haven't been there, you haven't been in that position to elevate. And then if I'm a player, I'm going to think about this. You're not with us. How are you with us? Will you hear in the off season where you hear doing training camp? Have you been here for the first 9 weeks of the season? And so if you're not with us, then you must be with him. How can I share with you what I'm going through? How can I tell you about the difficulties I'm facing as a player and not believe that you're going to sit on Jim irsay's couch later on that night and pillow talk? I believe in Jeff Saturday, I think Jeff Saturday is a good man. I've shared things with him. Bottom line is this. It was irresponsible to hire him as your head coach. It says you are not concerned with the experience. You are not concerned with what you've earned. You are concerned with comfort, you're concerned with familiarity. And when it does come to hiring the right coach, whether it be a black coach or a white coach, it's always been about comfort. It's always been about familiarity. And this is another time that somebody has jumped the line. It ain't always nepotism. It ain't always white privilege. Sometimes it's just the wrong decision. Yeah, I'm glad that you said that RC and lots of decisions for Saturday to make in the coming days, right? But the decision as to who will call the place has been made, let's get Dan back in here on this one. Dan, pass game specialist, assistant quarterbacks coach parks Frasier will call the plays. This was first reported by NFL network confirmed by ESPN Fraser had never called plays at the collegiate or professional level. And what he's up against, you know, this is a new role for him and he's got to do it in just a few days. And be ready to go. I'm pretty sure I've been a part of this before. We fired a coach or offensive coordinator in Detroit, midseason, and we were going to London and they hired a guy who was going to take over that week for offensive coordinator and play calling. We got beat 45 to 14. And he's a really good coach. Did the best he could in a tough situation. A lot of it is the familiarity of the play call, the lingo, the language that Indianapolis uses to give them some kind of a chance, not only this week, but moving forward. But I've said this many times. It's a totally different world from designing a game plan to calling plays. One is a science and repeatable, one is art and completely off of feel. It's another massive step in massive challenge in this process for Jeff Saturday and the colts, but at least you have somebody there that knows what the players will hear. They'll understand. But it's good luck because it is a massive challenge. You know, I will point out too. Obviously, you don't have Matt Ryan out there who's had the experience, you know, maybe to weather some of those storms. Maybe he'll be on the headset. He might be Sam ellinger, of course, an inexperienced starting quarterback now for them. All right, still to come on NFL live. There were stars in Marcus eyes yesterday, the possibility of LBJ play an in Dallas. Well, Jerry Jones likes the idea too. We're gonna talk about it next. Wait till you hear what these guys have to say, plus what Jerry says, you're watching NFL live, presented by USAA.

"I had long hair. But at that time when i first got here i wasn't really getting it. I was like well. My mother would do it but it wasn't like going to the hair salon on getting my head like special occasions otherwise it's ponytails and breeds Which wasn't really that bad. But at the same time being a little girl with really long hands sometimes become a target and i think for my daughter. She goes through that a little bit sometimes too because had her really haven't really long hair sometimes. That is the focal point. Four a lot of people which should not be contingency but it is so eighty nine with something else. Eighty nine was a hell of a year. But i learned so much eighty nine i learned about i actually in that is also the year i. I started learning about the harlem renaissance. Because we i went to school in north carolina. They didn't teach you these kind of things in black history was like i mean it it. It was national. It was national by that point but they really didn't go hard in the black history department and the school that i went to north carolina. It was more solar. You know that regular tip qualities. Easter and all that and you celebrate and stuff like that but then go hard for black history. But when i got the baltimore city i learnt a lot more about me being an african american woman. Me ban a black woman and In baltimore city. I learned a lot about my legacy but that is the year. Eighty nine is the year. That i i thought it might not about the harlem renaissance because the school that i went to they were very. I'm going to say africa lunch. But they taught african americans. You know things in things in studies when they could when he can squeeze it into the curriculum. So yeah So yeah i. "You know all these plays helped win the game at filon. I like that he had again. That's why i'm not as worried about the gerald mcchord thing if he's out because filon did pretty well. You know littleton quietly. Had ten tackles. He had a nice thing apron. Did pretty well. He can really turn it on. That'd be good giving our net. What have been saying about damon net. Let's see they've been saying all these things about them bellizzi. In the regular season he played one. Snap defensely so guys like our net and farrell and rogue still have to come on but again it's not gonna be perfect right away. It's not canon. Jake did some nice things at tara was it was a good win because you know what it's a win and they're all good and they had to win because the afc west is off for no for the first time since two thousand two. I didn't like that mountain. Kunz was inactive. i want my third round. Pick to be ready to play. Here's oh injuries on him but again it's all working properly it's hourly. Let's let's finish this. Show a little steam atop steers. Just as interesting and the raiders in week. One they're down fourteen zero at home. Underdog steelers on the road. Doing really good buffalo team down ten zero. Halftime offense was the craps and they turn it on. They turned it on in the second. Half big ben hit his receiver. Big ben look slow and he whipped cooks for the games but he made plays when he needed to ninety harris. The rookie from alabama played fifty eight snaps. Expect him to play life. The deal in pittsburgh is the defense. Tj what in-company mak- fitzpatrick. They're gonna come after you so there is often line asked the play while they have to predict car that they have to run the ball. More than waller has to show up in the first fifteen minutes of the game. You know we'll go go steal this game. Go start to know against two good. Abc north opponents. That will go a long way. They're in good shape right now. It's promising start is again. Perfect now is not perfect anyway listen. Paragon can't see denver by any means one period with the charges. But they're all wanna know answered good star going to be a good division and it's a good day. You should be happy. you know. The raiders won. They put on overshadow the whole country's talking about what they saw last night. And that's your team. What do i say there was only seventeen of these now so you got to enjoy it. We talk about this crap for twenty three sixty five. Enjoy the victories their special. So there you go. It was fine line between win loss. You won you're happy. Baltimore raven fans are miserable so soak it.

"Hey everybody haya do. Is bill williamson. This is brad. This is our week one review week to preview week. One was if we to anyway league line already discombobulated. We're in for because that was one helga. Football game is not believable. You know. I've come to expect it from those las vegas raters. They're just incredible. Just an incredibly entertaining. Watch right. i just killed a spider my wall. how about that didn't skip. Get a beat. A pretty big one. I haven't seen spider near older anyways. This team is just so entertaining. I don't know if it's good. It's better than good in than average. Hey look it wasn't perfect last night. Thirty three twenty seven but they made plays. We'll talk about that a little bit more. Really my sticks out right now to me is that this is going to be a lot like last year. Last year was incredible. So many incredible finishes good way someone to bad way. This could have went the bad way easily. And narratives changed like crazy on these whether the windsor losses. And that's just the way it is rugged and this not to be negative this is just a talk about what goes on. The game had been few seconds left on that clock in justin tucker wins it at the buzzer. It's measurable in las vegas right now. People are complaining about the receivers people were complaining about the defense giving it up at the end. People are complaining about the fans not loud enough news too many ravens fans in in that stadium. The injury concerns are huge. Those injury concerns or big right now anyways but it's just a little better. It's not let's not worry about the other teams fans right now. Let's not worry about the defense giving up in the fourth quarter. Let's not worry about the most of the receivers being non existent for most of the game because it all worked out. There was thirty seven seconds. Brian words didn't make too big plays in regulation and in overtime henry runs made a plane overtime. Renfro was good all day. Most of it zeh jones winning touchdown that would never happen. You know what. I mean so the narrative so the merging so thin and again that's not negative. It's just the way it is and they did did have that opportunity. They gave themselves at opportunity and they took advantage of it. And maybe this is this going to be one of those seasons where it all in follow. way I don't know last year it came back and forth and it was just chaos and right now i think this year is going to be chaos. And if it's good it's good cares. It's bank house will deal with it but right. Now you're wanting to who you beat a team that you might have to deal with in the playoffs plush. So i say enjoy and not worry about things. Too much denzel. Good is hurt is out for the airport on the espn and groom said. Shortly before that that that report came out that that was a possibility. Jahic mugabe is is possibly hurting. I am. I'm taping this at three twenty or so on tuesday so there may be news between time that this is recorded new here. This but grew nsen. Gangway could be out a while. Jared mccoy could be out while the way into the. Tv's he even said gruden said all. These guys are going to be examined but he did say we're gonna miss mccoy that sounds like he's gonna be. He was carted. he missed all last year. You know look at. He's a guy that they brought him for depth to help defense line he played good in the preseason. But still he's an older guy. And what do you. You can't necessarily count on that little k- there if if neglect way mrs bigtime. They'll miss that for sure for sure. Kind of downplay cleland. For the honest truth is clinton vero was wasn't healthy scratch. Yeah he has some back issues but he practice all last week and he wasn't on the injury report so he was a healthy scratch. Gakugei can't play this weekend. You know even if it's a very serious hamstring injury. He could miss the week. So so gonna get chance. Max was a superstar yesterday with fantastic nesbitt rubbed really good he. He helped win the game with the strip of course So you know. Maybe they're going to be okay there. But you're certainly missing magog guay marcus mariota and that big thirty one yard run in the first drive. He gets hurt hurt. His quad disguise deals with a lot of injuries. Maybe he's out a while. That's the case. Peterman your bag up. And and you know the marcus. Mariota packages is on hold. So that would hurt but yeah. The raiders played clutch football. They made the place when they needed to. And the defense show. The turnovers can be your friend. Defense wasn't perfect however they had three sex constant pressure. They had two turnovers of the quarterback on pressures scored. Fourteen points off of those. That's what happened to them in the past. They didn't turn the ball over one time in overtime car was close. Clark kerr the evanston play all summer in the pre season. I think it really showed and it showed her the ravens too week. One's odd week. Things settled down into the season goes but car settled down quickly in the second half but he was shaky at first but they got done. Hey if you're gonna get concentration two turnovers you're going to win a lot of games on defense and defense helped him. I said max was. He was monday night. He he showed that the nfl world what he is. Brian inwards stopped about his opportunity. Any shined but still see if the whole game. You know it's weird. I mean the raiders were walked in on waller and the ravens were locked in on waller and the raiders kept on going to them. Nineteen times. But you know wait in the game. The young guy showed up with c. Rubs had a big catch but all in all roads was what he was last year. And that's a little frightening. He competed at one ball. He's gonna make big plays but is he going to be a constant threat with see Often so i need to do some work especially with the injury good. So here's the ring news back soon. john simpson. Who played there. We'll we'll slide to the nba left tackle for the rest of the year of not This week of simpson will be in for income neo and germaine illumine manure. You know me and names. I think that what. I'm not going to try again on scum jemaine again for the rest of the day. Jon gruden liked what he saw from him. He'll play You know at right guard for good this week if income needles out at left guard. I've been saying. I'll off-season and the raiders felt that way too. There's there's not much room for air on the offensive line. As far as injury goes hundred. James had a tough night. Alex leatherwood had some moments. Were so good. They struggled and run and run protection. Run blocking passport was better. But you know it's a work in progress. It's a work in progress. But hey it's a win and you clean up all the crap lot more happier when you after a win right. And we'll see how the run game goes and this offense has a chance to be dynamic. Then defense is does what that you can win with. That evens giving up twenty seven points. If the offense does what it can't and i think it will again defensively keys pressure internal perriman over nick. Kwiatkoski was a little surprising k. J. right place. I made a big play and down. That helped win the game..

"Weeks thursday friday and saturday. So perhaps he'll be ready you if not. We'll see john john. Simpson another young guy against a good defensive line right they need richie healthy with these young guys and and it's a little scary. 'cause he's thirty eight years old and he missed fourteen and a half games last year guy. We hurting week two. And now he's hurt again. So you know kind of little little nervy a little nervy what else practice squad guys like migrate harper. Who was on the giants last year after he was when he they think the giants claimed him and that he was cut this year. He's quarterback trae ragas. Bj hemmings they cut from the practice squad. So there sixty nine guys in the program and he. He's not even good enough to be in that that's that's his remind that's knock on him. It's just reminder of of what happens in the preseason because he was a preseason stain out doesn't mean shine nola in september it nothing. May mike mayock said last week. That mr groggy swagger back After struggling us here. I wanna see how much he put his. I wanna see how much arnett plays i want. I want these guys do well cagey rate is raider finally happened He's gonna play is gonna play this week. They restrict your some deals to get him. This team's got some older guys. All sun and right in mccoy and perryman major pyramids at that old though he's only been released itchy. It makes you wonder how why they taught the need for these guys late in the year. So you know i. I think the young guys that some of these positions weren't quite as good as abra hoping particularly linebacker india defined apple. He was heard a lot. So let's not you know. Throw him away quite yet but we just saw what happened with News and that's the reason why they got older there. They felt they need guys. They got six four guys bradley players. Bradley bunch. I stole that from a twitter. Follower gave him props But yeah that's that's what you wanna see because go comfortable guys. He's comfortable with these guys. But there are some age moral and rush and white and tension nixon all on the injured reserve release. Three weeks devin. Del levin is back safety killing nas. Alameda guy. Oakland cared alameda. Were the raiders. Facility was right off the shadows of the stadium. He goes the falcons flat described. Cv has some what they're up to him Yeah so that's kinda catch up on there which spends leslie show and you know. I don't like going along i just i just get and get out hopefully make your smarter. Raider fan move on. Here's keys game you know. They don't have any running-backs right now. Dobson's out for the year right on back. I think they're getting the ravens had a good time healthwise they got some key guys heard but the ravens are really good. Starting the season four or five years. They've blown doors on opponent. So jim excuse me john harbaugh gets his team ready. They're one twenty state straight games in the preseason. I'm not saying that's going to play any any matter at all in that game but what it does is it means that this team is in win mode all the time. And it's you know it's an upper level team. It's a big game for the raiders. But make ramar and he's gotta be rusty just like derek carr make him take over challenging. Vote up against the ryan bag. Just say hey we're coming against you and if you can contain him for making big runs they got shot. They got shot anyways that block. Well yes established run game. Yeah get the crowd into this game early and just really be out physical physical team you know. I mean again. The offense is going to be rusty. The raiders offense is going to be rusty not many people played in the preseason goes for defense to but you gotta shake that route rust off right away and i. I have a feeling this might be a lower scoring game. Relatively speaking the over under fifty one ravens a four and a half point favorites. I think i would say this gains go around forty four so maybe twenty four twenty or something like that so points. Maybe at a premium. And he's going to be an interesting game. But i think the keys are shaking off the rust and really nodding not letting emerge jackson lamar jackson you. If you know what. I mean you can't let him play the game. He wants to play. You have to say hey. We're shutting everybody down around you and we're coming after you and we're shutting you down. And it's all the statement by gus bradley. Do not let lamar jackson. The lamar jackson take him away. He can do that and you can make some plays on offense. There's can be a real fun. I game with fans in allegiance stadium in the regular sees. So there you go there you have it. There's your preview. thanks for having me. I'll talk to you next week. Enjoy the game be saved. If you go have a blast. We'll talk to you. Tuesday come to the everyday me. And my step beating williams murga johnson now holder all there and they all do great work and they do podcasts. And they're not as annoying. Sound as i am and dago. "For that player to move on. And it's not a great. Look for the raiders. I mean the second third round pick from that class joins limbo junior. Who's trained my miami. Last september on cut down day doesn't even play one snap in the regular season with his muse hurt all last year member a couple of weeks ago. We heard how goodies looking. That's what scares me about camping. General don't really know running around the practice field and shorts. You know late shells. Some people may think that guy is good but the team obviously did it. And i think it's a cop out. Say okay well. He wasn't aggressive. A gus bradley fit so we can go. That's not how you build football teams. You know you you draft players. The of the outlast coaching staffs coachie says often only last few years in the nfl but if no picky like him to be there awhile so good players are do players phantom in. He was not a good pig. That's what it was. He struggled last year camp. It wasn't a good pick and that's on may end britain. get better. keep chasing your tail with these mrs. There's definitely a number of items that come from running businesses. That i think make me a more student trustee so i would say you know as far as things like becoming a curator and whatnot. Maybe when i'm in my fifties or sixties i'll go back to school to try to get the credentials to pursue that but right. Now i'm i'm i'm happy with what i'm doing professionally but thank you now. I just wondered because you describe it so beautifully. Your passion for the exhibits is so clear. So yeah a passion for the exhibit. Send in tuesday's excitement for for the city of baltimore. You and i were were chatting previously about the extremes of social strata in baltimore i very much want to be working with institutions in people that can find ways to empower everyone in this city and i think i think we're making a dent there with this institution but but no i'm i'm very optimistic about baltimore trying to make it the greatest city it can be. I wish you every luck with your endeavors to do so because it is a very worthwhile mission. And i think this is a wonderful museum. A wonderful thing that you're doing. So how can people get involved with the baltimore museum of art and reach out and learn more about your wonderful collections. Will i love to see. Is many people passing through the front doors possible. Normally i would tell you just show up at ten art museum drive in baltimore tuesday through sunday but unfortunately we have kobe restrictions. So really the best thing for anyone to do right. Now's visit art b. m. a. dot. Org that's the museum's website you'll be able to see a number of our offerings whether they be online. I know we're doing arts..

"I a. training. The funding plan has gotten a little mixed up but the goal to go for with that train remains. I think it's just. The funding sources needs to be reallocated. I guess is the best way to put it. But i do know that that is going to be a priority going forward. I actually wanted to pivot though to ask about it. Somewhat more exciting question. Which is the quest from john. Waters wondered if you could share some information about that but quest. Because i have been chomping at the bit to actually get to baltimore and see that but obviously of in pandemic times. That's gonna take awhile. Yeah i mean. I you know there. There are certain board proceedings. I can't can't comment on. But i would say we did a big show with him. Maybe two or three years ago. It really injected a type of energy you traditionally don't see in an art museum. I think we did like a twenty four hour film on with this films. People were posted on twitter and facebook. And and you know it's it's funny i. I can't recall if johnson is late sixties or early seventies. But you know the fact that you and i are age peers in our late thirties. The fact that we have a lot of energy and enthusiasm about him. I certainly tell you when we have that exhibit going on the demographics definitely scripts skewed younger than john. So it's it's exciting to see you know. Just a new. I don't think you would think of the traditional john waters fan as a person who's like i wanna go see a matisse day god renoir but if if that can be an avenue for them to Get up that arts education or larger arts education. That's really exciting. and john. Of course being one of the biggest cultural exports from baltimore. We are completely tremendously. Pleased enthused that he's decided to make us the repository of his creative works is his creative. Works not as well as a number of Artworks that he's collected by other artists over the span of his life. And i'm sure you saw there some other fun details like we're going to name a bathroom after him. Yeah that's very much what you would think that that playful occasionally off color sense of humor. John waters i mean john waters is such a cult icon of american trash cinema. That you have to kind of love him for reaching out at this time specifically to make sure that you have a wonderful winning ace in the hole when it comes to attracting younger and younger audiences. I think that's wonderful to you. And i mean we've we've we've talked a lot today about the diversity and i think most people when they hear the term diversity. They're thinking of a racial diversity but i mean ultimately we are a comprehensive art museum covering a wide number of geographies in time periods through history. I would say you know. Currently there's greater lens and focus on people of color women but at the end of the day. We're we're trying to make sure that there's something there for everyone anyway that we can talk to you reach you. That's definitively heighten our priority list isn't an institution by think you feel the same way about the word diversity is i do about the word social justice because even though i have adopted social justice is a word to describe my podcast. What i mean when i say that is way more than just black lives matter by pock lives matter. It's about more than racism able ism. Feminism it's about so many more issues internationally globally. It's as much about to tell. -tarian ism and fascism as.

"A piece worn by young boys as they transition into adulthood but all the iconography on it was affiliated with being pregnant woman and decide that a woman gave birth to you and the woman gives birth to you into adulthood. And i think. I think you know outside the context of that. Show where it's like. Let's talk about how empowering women are how empowering women in in motherhood are. i don't really think you could of told that story in a more complete or interesting narrative. that's a powerful image. And if i could just mention one more from the standpoint of what are we doing to recognize the work of indigenous peoples we also kind of highlighting these two. Because i know with all of openings and closings these are two that i am definitively aware open when when the museum is open and accessible on but the other one is us stars and stripes in. That one is Puddle in bar curator darrien turner ominous looking at how women of the lakota health appropriated the american flag to carry out their various cultural practices. I can't recall the exact law. But there was an actual law that forbade their ability to do their ancient cultural practices but by interweaving the american flag into many of ornaments Santa work they were able to continue to pursue those items events in practices that were so instrumental to their culture. Oh wow what a creative way to look. At the prohibition of everything and what an unusual way to look at your american identity is well within the context of that exhibit. i love that. I think that's really fascinating. and especially. we spend a lot of time talking to indigenous creators on this podcast as a whole and one of the themes that comes up constantly is conflict between being an american but also being at odds with the government proclaims american to be. That's a perfect metaphor for that. And i wondered. What are you seeing as different conversations. That you're seeing about arch in this refocused vision at this moment. I mean i am interim on so many committees But the truth is i..

"And then lastly i would say we tried to do a lot to quote unquote need people where they're at because we realize not everybody. Can you know go out of their way to come to so in baltimore. There's if you're familiar with lexington market i encouraged people. Look it up. It's being redeveloped right now But that's kind of like a big place for people who otherwise might live in could best be described as a food desert. Be able to go ahead and get access to food and that sort of thing so we actually have an outpost there Where we do a lot of arts. I know we debuted movie by salons there a year or two ago when when things were better and then we also do events with our green mountain west community centre partners so in terms of doing all of these things outside engaging other communities. You're also doing a lot of exhibitions that are exploring specific themes within african or indigenous art. And i'd love to talk about perfect power motherhood and african art a understand. This was an exhibit. That was near and dear to your heart is well. What can you tell me about the conception of the exhibit so. It's i'm sitting here and i'm thinking to myself. This pandemic has been just a terrible a terrible toll of physically mentally emotionally spiritually on so many people from museum standpoint. One of the things that's fascinating to contemplate is a lot of our shows. They're coming from somewhere in there going somewhere. So as the country has gone through varying waves of opening and closing opening and closing bad as like completely obliterated our our shows schedule but what i will highlight is specific to twenty twenty or museum leadership. They they were two things that they sort of on one was with this whole idea. Of what have we done in terms of diversity of the collection Regrettably i wanna say only. Four percent of our art is produced by that number has gone up over the last five or six years. I want to say maybe if you were to look more recently acquisitions or closer to twenty percent but realizing we weren't doing now so the staff came up with this idea of vision. Twenty twenty to mark the one hundred and one hundred year anniversary of women's rights vote in the united states and so the plan was would only buy art by women or female identifying artists We would also only feature shows by women or female identify artists and so To that i was sort of light so the first one you mentioned was a perfect power hood. So that show was put on by kevin's for all of our very Towns it department head of Arts of the americas africa asia pacific islands by kinda laugh because we just say triple..

"Number. One i just want to offer a heartfelt. Thank you for the compliments you have about our online resources. I know the board which i see a very frequently albeit via zoom works. Really hard to make sure that we're responsive to our communities and i definitely know that our staff and volunteers go far far above and beyond what i see and so. That's that's really high praise so but to to answer your question you know. It's kind of funny. There's a very common theme among older cultural institutions. Dan an idiot. I would say most cultural institutions in this country. If they are over a hundred years old they have this very similar background. Stork there founded one hundred years ago to cater to largely middle to upper income. White audiences Now number one. I think he would struggle to think of how many major cities have a majority white population. That's that's the first place you start but then if you look at where baltimore is today. The city is greater than sixty percent black. I think maybe about thirty percent white. Our visitor ship has gotten better. But i can assure you that. It probably very much reflects the patronage that it was designed for hundred years ago and we we realized that's a real problem And probably say that was really addressed. Maybe about five or six years ago. I would also knew the other issue. You'll see with a lot of these Older organizations is that their visitor. Ship is is just older And they they really haven't done a good job of refocusing for today I i would never want to describe what we do is being as low as in the entertainment business but would also like to highlight. People is thirty years ago. i can right now. i can sit down. And i can watch netflix. Hulu app curiosity straight. It's on my mobile phone. It's on my ipad tablet so we really tried to recognize the moment and be responsive to our audiences so so really to get deeper into your question there a number of things we did but kind of the two more important things that i would highlight our first. We rewrote our mission. And so i'm just gonna go ahead and read the quote for you. Hear the baltimore. Museum of art connects art to baltimore in baltimore to the world embody A commitment to artistic excellence and social equity in every decision from art presentation interpretation an collecting to the composition of our board of trustees staff and volunteers creating a museum welcoming to all so a lot of work witin to creating that mission. But it's kind of like every great endeavor you have to mix actions with words and so the next step beyond that was creating strategic plan off the top of my head. I think the strategic plan is probably like fifty or so up pages. We also have a strategic plan oversight committee that i'm involved in that gets sentenced to very explicitly tracking house. Our board getting more diverse. Very explicitly tracking. How is our staff getting more diverse. Same thing with our collection. We have some upcoming diversity equity inclusivity accessibility training coming up for our staff. But then also see your point of power we also engaging our community. So i mentioned that i'm on the public engagement committee. We actually have in advisory panel made up of a number baltimoreans and so that would include liaison so the baltimore city public schools. Faith leaders Local artists in others also note that we have a very strong partnership with an organization called the green mountain west community center. That was a partnership kicked off. Oddly artists mark bradford that continues to go strong..

"I will give you my current title. So i am currently the secretary of the board of trustees with that. I'm a member of the executive committee. The investment committee the public engagement committee. And i am also on one of the Acquisitions committees so we divide the world in the are in different ways but the acquisition committee. I'm on is our of the americas africa asia in the pacific islands. And how has expanded over tie. What did you start as what got you involved in the b. m. a. to begin with. I've always had a great love of art when i was a college student. I volunteered at the art museum on campus. I technically eat. My minor is in hispanic studies on one class. Away from a art history minor. Actually when i went to go get my mba. Realize that you know. I really taken enough business classes that i wanted. I actually decided to just go ahead and take a impressionist and post impressionist our class. So number one just a genuine love of art so taking that a little bit further when i recently relocated here in twenty seventeen those my second time living in baltimore i was really just casually having a conversation with a colleague about and i guess he'd had number of these conversations with me and she said you know seems like you really like our my profession is that i'm a portfolio manager for an investment company here in baltimore so it started off with will. Why don't you shoreline. Our investment committee. Were always looking for people who have a different insights for various asset classes in so i was technically a non voting member i was really just thereby perspective as voting members who are also trustees up the board. Got more familiar with me. My name was put forward to join the bigger board. And thus is how i i now now find myself. You know as the secretary. All end on various committees that outlined. It's incredible because the museum itself clearly just in terms of the number of committees that you've outlined. There's so much work that is done by these way. That is almost really difficult to encapsulate. I can just say from. My perspective is a teacher. I've always deeply appreciated everything that. I've seen even not living in baltimore but being a teacher in the virginia area. I've appreciated the wonderful teachers guides for collections and selected exhibitions as well as art to go and virtual resources that seem perfectly suited to the needs of the pandemic right now. Even i just wonder in terms of the outreach that you do it must go way beyond that. I'm sure there's far more than i'm necessarily aware of. But how is the outreach mission. Changing to include more engagement from the community including baltimore's own black communities during the.

"The i'm your host aerial basketball and today we're talking art the baltimore museum of art specifically founded in one thousand fourteen. It's a gem of museum that recently pledged to do better by its community with a commitment to diversity and equity through structural. Change as well as initiatives and exhibitions here to talk with us about these changes is board trustee and executive committee member while may web welcome plumbing. Thank you so much for agreeing to come on and talk about your role with the baltimore museum of art and how you're doing in this moment and all this wacky nece that we are living through right at this moment. I hope you're doing okay. Thank you so much for having me. I'm doing well. I've been blessed to be employed through this whole event of the same for my wife My family is in good health. Both of our families are starting to get vaccines so I thankfully don't have much to complain about. But i think we can all agree Psychologically this has been a very trying period. Yeah yeah for sure and are you in baltimore right now or out side or so. I live in the city. Yeah okay So i don't know how well you know the city but my neighborhood is just south of the inner harbor. Okay okay. Yeah i gotcha. Yeah i've spent a lot of time in baltimore. Okay mostly at johns hopkins unfortunate. Yeah the hospital side or the school side the hospital. Sorry to hear that. Sorry to hear out but world class healthcare. So that's exactly. That is the flip side but the inner harbor is lovely and always getting to stay down. There is always wonderful. I have a lot of friends who live in that area as well but yeah baltimore is such an interesting city for so many reasons you run the gamut of income diversity in terms of what the city itself represents and when you look at the diversity of the city is well in microcosm in the middle of everything that's been going on this year trying to balance. I would assume that the baltimore museum of art has felt like it has to kind of way. Its own responsibilities differently in responding to the moment in a way that i don't know that the country has really ever woken up in the way that it has this year or in twenty twenty i should say but we're continually waking up in twenty twenty one as it turns out. We saw me where john with that. But no i can't remember the name of those action movies. Twenty twenty part do is that. I think that is what we call this. Berkshire oh man. But i already recorded an intro. Where i talk about the baltimore. Museum of art is a little gem of a museum. That is doing the right thing. And making a commitment to do better by the community in terms of pledging to better by talk representation et cetera. The four we get into anything else. Could i ask you to describe your role within the museum and how it's continually expanding over time you know it's it's funny the bit about continually expanding but i will..

"He he certainly he loves to mix it up and he didn't sort of mince any words in the process too so he was not sort of winning a lot of sort of hearts in this process. But you know from a business perspective. You could sort of see his point. I guess i who's to blame. It seems like there's a little bit to go around. Maybe him a little bit more. So i guess right. It's just like everything in life him. i think they're shades. Great everything i think. Part of the blame was him. Not being transparent insane. Look i'm going to leave if you don't do this. And this and then part of it is the city of baltimore who wasn't really forthright in the way. They negotiated with them and figured like okay. He really can't do anything about it so they didn't have the foresight to see. They were going to lose the team. He wasn't transparent enough in telling them that. I'm gonna leave if you don't do this so it's really both both both every blame all the way around. And in the end the people who paid for were the fans of baltimore. You know the fans that want to hear about the economics on either side. They didn't want their team. The leave so unfortunately that happens in a lot of situations even today. So i would think that you there's to go around the board y to the uninitiated. Why did they why was why was the departure so abrupt so clandestine so done. You know dramatically with those moving vans in the middle of under the cover of night on that particular evening I'm not sure people sort of recognize. Sort of the the specificity of that day and why it almost his hand was forced for for a reason or two. Why why was that. The exclamation point and the dramatic point that the team left in such a manner In in march of eighty four. Well you gotta goes to. What kind of person. What kind of man say was he he really. It was heavy handed.

Well then it's only an hour But it it cuts right to the chase and it really is instructive and it. It's it's it's haunting It's it's happy full of memories. it's also very disdainful for the way things sort of happened at it. Certainly very hopeful. Of course the ravens franchise now for better or for worse carries on that legacy of the colts franchise inelegant as that history had wound up becoming but Moving forward from it and all that. So here's our conversation. Come up with troy and just a moment or two and it's it's a great one and if you're a colts fan or you remember the old. And then this the baltimore. Cfl's and a whole bunch of other sort of informal names but make no mistake of the colors and the stadium was if aug. on purpose frankly of the old colts franchising in many respects. The the arrival of the cfl brand of football in baltimore was the impetus to finally Once again get an nfl franchise not the expansion version but a relocation version and one commemorate that and how about a truly lost to history Version of the baltimore football legacy the baltimore bombers remember them probably don't but they were The team that was proposed by the Various ownership folks and and team officials and city officials at in the early nineties when the nfl was looking to award Expansion franchise nineteen ninety-three to be exact. The baltimore bombers were the name and logo and all that stuff the glazer family one to actually by the tampa bay buccaneers Were part of that effort.
