"To spend another year and finish this book. And so it was a fantastic thing for them to do. Untested writer, but they liked the beginning of the book sufficiently to do this. And so I kind of had a writing career. And so I became a kind of full-time writer relatively quickly because not only did that book come out and do well for a first novel. It was published in the United States and in other languages. But also, I was asked to write for television around that time. That's my first experience of writing scripts. So I did a I did two dramas with TV, British TV. And not to jump ahead of ourselves too much, but because the first two novels, 82 pale view of hills, 86, an artist of the floating world, but of course 89 is remains of the day, and I have to ask you. It can't be a coincidence, can it that one of the only two teleplays that you had done, the profile, a profile of Arthur J Manson, also happened to deal with a butler? I'm amazed that you've done this research. I've done so many interviews. In the last two years, when I published my last book, nobody knows about things like the profile of RPG. I'm amazing slightly embarrassed, but this was something that went out on British TV. I think it's about 50 minutes long, or something like this. And indeed, it's about an English butler. And this was not exactly a dry run for the remains of the day, but I mean, this was the start of my, this is the first evidence of my obsession around that time. With the English butler. And that kind of slightly comical absurd englishness. Only want to mention that when you say it was your first encounter with that topic, I guess I'm trying to think chronologically, but I read about why were you at balmoral. And were you encountering Steven versions of Stevens there? People often try to equate that. Now I didn't actually this is way back. This is just after I left my school before I went to university. I did a summer job as a ground speeder for the then queen mother. The mother, the mother of the late Queen Elizabeth. And yeah, this is up in Scotland at balmoral. Well, where I was one of the one of the servants, if you like, who tramped through the Heather, whether it's pouring with rain or whether it's muddy or whether there's a bog in front of you. Do you keep information in your tramp through the leather? A Heather. To get the grouse to hop on her head. So that the guys at the gun butts can shoot them all down. But yeah, it was all parts of that strange year. It's the same year that I was hitchhiking across America. Within a few weeks, I went from a cocktail parties given by the Queen mother in Balmoral Castle. To living in night shelters. On the West Coast, in San Francisco, tenderloin, or whatever. I mean, it was a weird year, but that's what you're doing in the 19. Well, so then flashing, clashing back forward to when you're working on the remains of the day as a novel or contemplating rather how you follow your first two novels, the idea of actually writing about a butler, maybe this is BS that's out on the Internet, and I'm sure there's some of that.

"More than he thought he did. Got it. Yeah. It's like that scene from Harry Potter. If you don't really believe in it, you don't go through the wall. And he was, he was really close to the sewers. He would have gone through it. The only thing I have to say about this about, you know, the whole tragic story is lack candle in the wind. Never knowing who to cling to when The Rain came in. Perfect. And I would love to love her, but I was just a kid. Thank you, mister. I know, we got the queen. Elton John, a French pillar. Who doesn't? We have all over here. It's like Letterman. That's actually, I guess, Elton John's only time playing that song live I read, that doesn't sound right, right? I thought he wrote it because of that or is it? I have no idea. I can't even remember what website it was on. I just went through so many fucking links. I think that was only time he ever sang it about a dead queen. Oh. Maybe that's what I read. He's been sitting there with his guitar. I'm bucking up pals for years, but the veg keeps taking her medicine. She keeps taking her hormones. Oh my God. So at that funeral, this is fucking wild. Let me say this beforehand, though. While this happened, the boys were actually with their father at that Balmoral Castle in Scotland with the queen. They were like doing like a family thing over there. And it happened in the middle of the night, so like they heard immediately, and then Charles didn't tell the boys until the next morning. And then they stayed there for like a week and the media was like very cold about this and immediately started criticizing the royal family saying that they were uncaring and they were like, you know, they didn't give a shit about Diana and stuff when truthfully like they were probably just giving this 15 year old and 12 year old boy a little bit of fucking privacy. Excuse me, prince Charles, excuse me, Prince Charles. Have you shown the children, the crime scene photos yet? Yeah. Fucking crazy. And so the funeral itself is a week later on September 6th and 97. And this was on television and it's estimated that 2.5 billion people around the world watch this. And Harry actually, yeah, it's crazy. Harry actually talks about this a little bit in one of his interviews from like last year. And he says, it was just really fucking surreal to see all these people like falling over themselves devastated. And showing like a thousand times more emotion than he was while he's walking behind his own mother's coffin. Yeah, it's because she fucking threw herself down some stairs where her brother was in their gut. They didn't like her that much. That's right. She made my brother weird and ugly. He talks a lot about it. But you threw me down the stairs. Thank you, mister John. We didn't think you'd be back. You're welcome. So the French investigation into what happened started fucking immediately. Inspector clouseau, right? Yes. Yep. And actually, they got Jacques Cousteau and involved as well. He was like, where's this happens on the river? And I know water. So maybe, you know, and he was actually very young.

That is your latest top stories. This is Bloomberg. You got to imagine a lot of people are excited about the idea of traveling to Japan now. I gotta say, there is a reaction in markets if I can just nerd it out. We're seeing Japanese stocks they were up by 1%. Some of those reopening plays coming back. This has been a concern for global growth. The fact that regions in Asia are still closed, I mean, China that has no signs of abandoning COVID zero, but somewhere like Japan bringing in tourists again, I mean, it does signify that perhaps there is some change coming into the fore. Yeah, and it is something as well that we every time that we've seen Hong Kong, for example, change its rules around as well. We have usually gotten positive market reactions from that as well. And only last week we had Hong Kong's airport ending temperature checks for passengers at its international airport and relaxing, quarantine requirements for local aircrews because that's the other part of this is that you had crews that were stuck in hotels for such long periods of time and whereas in this part of the world we've become quite used to the fact that COVID restrictions have been lifted. It's kind of a reminder that things have not been so easy elsewhere in terms of being able to travel swimsuits to see that move from Japan, Japan airlines shares up 2% today in trading on that news. That is the latest from there. Of course, we have been talking a lot more as well about the energy story here in Europe. That is the corollary of the Ukraine story that we've been reporting on. Interesting to hear the commentary out of Germany over the weekend. We have this statement from Olaf schulz, saying that Germany was prepared to weather the fallout, should Russia decide to halt gas deliveries. That is something that, of course, we have been watching very closely because of the impact we know that can have across Europe, not only because of the huge industrial sector in Germany, where things can have that impact on the economy there as well. Yeah, I mean, we've heard from Germany talk about the fact that they are preparing aid. They have aid prepared for companies. Should they face defaults? Because this is the thing. It's not just sort of the utility companies themselves, which of course they faced issues. Just sort of as a weird quirk of how utility companies work, they typically short energy futures, and that would be so painful right now to be short energy considering what it's been doing, so it means the collateral they have to put down all of a sudden has gotten really wide. A corporates who right now are facing bills moving higher. It's energy was already wages. And so part of what Germany has been talking about, the aid that they possibly need is also just for individual corporates, small corporations, medium sized corporations, as well, and again, you know, it's a circular thing. It also means the ECB looks at raising rates as well. Because of the inflationary issues that they are facing and hawkish language, we have gotten over the weekend from ECB speakers. Yeah, on a story that we're likely to be hearing an awful lot more as well as things move on. We're going to turn next to a story here in the UK. The Bank of England delaying its interest rate decision this week because of the period of national mourning, but the pressures on the UK economy remain fierce. We're joined now in studio by the economy Andrew sentence, form a member of the bank's monetary policy committee now senior adviser at Cambridge, econometrics, good morning to you. Thank you for coming with us on Bloomberg radio. I'm interested how much you might think. We have this new data out in the UK this morning showing slower than expected growth in July, is a delay to a rate decision. Could that possibly do you think change the calculation for the Bank of England? I don't think so significantly. We've got interest rates at 1.75% with inflation at over 10% and heading north of that different estimates have been heading to at least 13% perhaps further. It could be ameliorated by the government's energy plan. But I think there's a need to get interest rates up to a higher level to keep a lid on those inflationary pressures and ensure that they don't get embedded in the economy. It does feel precarious to be lifting interest rates right now, considering we have the government about to embark on the spending, this energy policy plan, Deutsche Bank puts it at about 200 billion pounds worth of guilt issuance that will need to happen as part of this. So you have this mix of interest rates going higher, more public spending. Does that dynamic worry you at all? Silence fell on the royal mile in the Scottish capitalized the Hearst carrying the queen arrived with a crowd breaking out into applause after the convoy vanished from view. Now Ukraine's forces have reportedly continued their rapid advance in the kharkiv region, exploiting an extraordinary collapse of Russian defenses, unconfirmed reports suggest Kyiv's troops have taken a key town about 55 miles from the Russian border, Russia's defense ministry published a map showing much of the country's forces out of the kharkiv region, but without commenting any further. Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Leanne guerin's, this is Bloomberg, Stephen. Leon, thank you very much for that. Well, it's time now for our daily chart chart, and we've got Bloomberg's eddy van der Waals with us for that. Eddie take us through what magical chart have you been looking at for us today? Good morning, Stephen, apologies for that. Yes, I'm looking at cryptocurrencies today. We haven't been talking about cryptocurrencies a lot over the past hour. I don't know really for the past year or so since Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency prices have gone into retreat. But these are these are patterns that we see over time. We've seen cryptocurrencies explode onto the scene and just fade from the consciousness as they dropped in the past. This time around, it feels like we are seeing some of the prices in cryptocurrencies recover a lot and one interesting thing that we're seeing is we've seen some of the smaller cryptocurrencies, namely Ethereum, outperforming Bitcoin, and this is typically something that we see at the start of our bull cycles in cryptocurrencies. That's interesting, isn't it? Eddie, because I was going to say, are we still in a mired in a crypto winter? I mean, Bitcoin's bouncing this morning, but broad risk appetite is sort of bouncing this morning. It seems as if winter is being tested by that. Absolutely. The crypto crypto winters follow a fairly predictable pattern, right? We see every four years or so we see what we call a halving event in cryptocurrencies where the amount of cryptocurrency that is created every time that a new Bitcoin is mined is halved and that usually start at starts a new cycle a new rally in prices. This time around slightly different. We are seeing changes in the way that Ethereum works. And that seems to be bringing back some of the excitement to the cryptocurrency space. But as you point out, risk appetite broadly is improving and cryptocurrencies nowadays are much more correlated with the rest of the crypto or with the rest of risk assets globally. So perhaps that's giving them some boost as well. How is Ethereum different from Bitcoin and all of this? Right, I think in cryptocurrencies, Ethereum right now is the big story because in Ethereum what we're seeing. Ethereum, of course, unlike Bitcoin, which wants to proposes to replace the U.S. dollar and become the biggest currency in the world. Ethereum is what they call a smart contract. You can use it to execute contracts options, the sort of financial products that we talk about daily, but on a blockchain. And what we're seeing in Ethereum, they're moving to a model where they are no longer using miners in the way that crypto does. So lowering the amount of energy consumption. And that's happening right now. They're moving from a proof of stake from approved from a proof of work to a proof of stake model. And that's happening right now. And that's just brought some excitement to Ethereum. And I think that's boosting Bitcoin as well. Okay, and is that enough excitement to keep Bitcoin above 21,000? We seem to be flirting with 22,000 already. Yeah, I think that's the big question. Whether this momentum can keep going. I think we're a long way off from the highs of 66,000 and above that we saw, you know, over a year ago. So it's going to be hard to keep this level of excitement in the cryptocurrency currency space going without setting new records. So I think it's an open question at the moment. Of course, terminal uses that want to see these functions this chart and others like it should have a look at the crypt function cyp on their terminals and they'll see all of the prices quoted there for the cryptocurrency space. Okay, Eddie van der Waals, thank you very much for joining us with our daily chart chat folks and today on cryptocurrencies coming up next on the program we will be joined by Charles

"And flourished under her reign. Britain is the great country it is today because of her. It is 7 30 a.m. in London. Good morning to you. I'm Stephen Carroll. And I'm Danny Berger. You're listening to Bloomberg daybreak Europe live from London. Now a quick look into these markets. It is 7 31 a.m. in London. Of course, we check the markets every 15 minutes throughout the trading day for you, and it is another day where we are looking at weakness coming through the dollar. It seems to have peaked reach its fresh high on Wednesday of last week. So we are looking at a Euro that's higher by half a percent easily above parity right now versus the dollar. We're also looking at a stronger cable this morning as well. That's at one 16, up three tenths of 1%. Now that drop in the dollar does seem like it's able to support some risk assets here. We had a gain of more than one and a half on the S&P on Friday. Some of the follow through coming through the European futures here in stocks 50 futures, those are up four tenths of 1%. We are looking at a slightly negative U.S. future session, but I say slightly, they're basically flat at this moment. Maybe running out of a little bit of steam as there's some skepticism as to whether that dollar loss can continue Steven. "I'm the Bloomberg business app. And at Bloomberg quick take. This is Bloomberg radio. New York City is marking the 21st anniversary of the 9 11 terror attacks today. Scott Pringle reports on the ceremony in Lower Manhattan. Plaza here at the 9 11 memorial is packed with people, some are holding up photos of their loved ones lost. Others wearing 9 11 related forever in our hearts t-shirts and the annual tradition continues of their reading of the names of the nearly 3000 people killed in the terror attacks, many giving a personal message some tearing up. Oreo, we love you, miss you always. And continue to hold you close at all. At the 9 11 memorial, I'm Scott Pringle of New York. Hillary Clinton is warning against the dangers of extremism on this 21st anniversary of 9 11. Especially when it uses violence to try to achieve political and ideological goals. Appearing on CNN's State of the Union, the former Secretary of State, explained it's important to deal with extremism that threatens American democracy, especially if it advocates for violence. And went on to say she hopes Americans can come together to support President Biden as he works to rebuild the country, regardless of party as the country once did for president Bush. Queen Elizabeth's casket is now in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, a hearse carrying the coffin left Balmoral Castle early this morning. The first leg of the journey leading up to her state funeral in London next week, the coffin will remain overnight in the throne room of the palace of holyrood house before continuing its journey to London where a state funeral is planned at Westminster Abbey on September 19th. One person is dead two more injured after a shooting at a Dallas shopping mall. Police responded to reports of gunfire Saturday afternoon and found the three victims. They were taken to a local hospital, one of the victims later died from his injuries. The status of the other two victims is still unknown. The shooter has been taken into custody, but police are still unclear on the motive. I'm Tammy trejo. Texas police are investigating a teenager who fatally shot two men attempting to break into his home. Jim Forbes has more. Late Friday night, three masks and armed men attempted to break into a home occupied by an adult woman two 17 year old boys and a 12 year old boy, one of the 17 year olds retrieves a shotgun and discharge at several times, killing two of the suspects. The third suspect fled the scene and has not been found. The county sheriff is asking anyone with any information regarding the third man to come forward before the case can be presented to the grand jury. I'm Jim Forbes. The navy is in possession of more videos of alleged UFOs than have already been shared with the public, but don't expect them to be released anytime soon. The neighbor responded to a freedom of information act request earlier this week, acknowledging the existence of the footage, but refusing to release it. In response to the request from the government transparency site, the black vault, the navy said the release of the information will harm national security, the statement went on to say, no portions of the videos can be segregated for release. A black pastor arrested in Alabama for watering his neighbors flowers is suing the police. Scott Carr reports. A video that went viral shows pastor Michael Jennings of childersburg watering his neighbor's plants when Alabama police approached him and asked him to identify himself. In the video, Jennings tells officers who he is, but that he's not required to provide physical ID, the pastor says the three officers who arrested him violated his first and Fourth Amendment rights at a news conference Saturday, Jennings said he felt dehumanized by the experience and wants accountability and justice. A North Carolina man is a new state record holder after reeling in a really big fish. Brandon Carney's name and he was about 50 miles off the coast recently when he says he battled a beast for more than two hours before reeling in the largest swordfish ever caught in the state. It weighed in at 504 pounds stretching 12 and a half feet long from tail to tip. I'm Tammy trejo. And I'm Susanna Palmer in the Bloomberg newsroom. New York City marked the 21st anniversary of the 9 11 terror attacks today in Lower Manhattan. Names of the nearly 3000 people who were killed in the attacks were read out loud at the 9 11 memorial. Laura angeletta. Doreen. Vice president Kamala Harris and governor Kathy hochul were among the many politicians on hand. Freight railroad and labor unions are working through the weekend to try to hammer out a new contract to avoid a strike. We get more about that from Bloomberg's Denise Pellegrini. Susanna ten railroad workers unions have already struck new labor deals, but there are two holdouts. The brotherhood of locomotive engineers and trainmen and the international association of sheet metal air rail and transportation workers. And they account for more than 90,000 rail employees. And if the unions end railroads fail to come to a deal, it could startle supply chains disrupt deliveries and cause the U.S. economy more than $2 billion a day, according to rail officials. And Susanna the railroads are warning if possible service disruption starting tomorrow. Bloomberg's Denise Pellegrini, Federal Reserve policymakers will be paying close attention this week to the release of the consumer price index for August. This is analysts speculate about the size of another interest rate hike when fed policymakers next meet September 21st. Brian Weinstein is head of global fixed income at Morgan Stanley investment management. They had a crystal ball. They would have raised rates. I think long before they did. So an absence of that and I think in light of where they started at zero or negative, no choice, right? So yes, growth is slowing in a perfect world. They would have been hired to begin with, but now they have no choice to be credible. They have to fight the current inflation and worry about growth later. And they can't basically nod to the market that we're going to use again right away, although it does seem more and more likely as growth falls. The CPI comes out on Tuesday. "King Charles the third has returned to Buckingham Palace as the nation begins its ten days of mourning and we welcome first our colleague Lizzie burden at Buckingham Palace. She's been covering this throughout. So Lizzie, thanks so much for being here. We now know that King Charles is back in town. What do we expect today? But in about an hour David, King Charles, as he became immediately upon his mother's death, will be addressing the nation, it's a pre recorded address. He has already said that his mother's death was at the moment of the greatest sadness for him and all members of his family. Tomorrow he'll be formally proclaimed king after the accession council meets at 10 a.m. I'm here at Buckingham Palace and I can only tell you David, the crowds have only grown overnight. People coming to pay tribute, lay flowers. There are warnings of delays on the transport networks of just people coming to pay their respects to the queen because of course she went so much to so many people here and I think it's an interesting statistic that she was on the throne for longer than 85% of the population had been alive. Extraordinary. Give us a sense of what his majesty's government is doing in the meantime. What's going on in parliament? Well, there have been ten hours of tributes paid to Elizabeth II Liz trusts the new prime minister who only was who met the queen just this week at Balmoral Castle said that the queen was one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known. She said that Elizabeth II had reinvented the monarchy for the modern age. But perhaps what pulled on the emotional heartstrings the most was a tribute from the former prime minister Boris Johnson, he is now on the back

"What the queen has brought is a sort of steady modernising approach to the monarchy. It was remaining herself the same character she was when she stood announced in Westminster Abbey. And I think that combination of a period to be the same must be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. Has served the monarchy very well. And your strengths is a society country that we now live in. And I think the process of embracing change and a very quiet sort of way is to be very effective and of course, this has been admired by other great political figures around the world, Mandela, Obama, virtually every American president is valued between take on things. So experiences enormous. And she's used it and projected Britain in a way this is being a touching to many people. Given that legacy and influence of the queen, what sort of king do you think that Charles will be? Well, I think each monarch brings his own style and some beliefs to the role, but essentially that call value of the monarchy is to remain politically neutral above the political way and to work for society and the nation as a whole. And I think the aim very much of the principle where is now King Charles the third and of his mother. Elizabeth was to try to make a better world one that was more tolerant, one that was more stable and steady and one that was able to deal with adversity as well as with triumph. And our thanks to Bloomberg daybreak, Europe bankers, Caroline Hepburn and Steven Carroll for that conversation with Charles Anson communications consultant and former press secretary to Queen Elizabeth II. "At passing away peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, according to Buckingham Palace, we're going to have more on that shortly with our reporter Ed ludlow. But now let's get over to Hong Kong for a check of what things are or how things are shaping up for the Asian trading day he is Bloomberg's prank. He looks like a mildly positive start this morning, perhaps following on from that rush into stocks late in the session on Wall Street where the S&P 500 finished up over 4000 with a pretty strong gain of 26 points, two thirds of 1%. We do have some of the numbers here this morning to the episode of the nikkei up about a half of 1% and looking at the cost with gains of about a third of a percent. We'll get to the latest action, including Australia in a few moments. So we did have the fed chief Jerome Powell, repeating that the fed is determined to curb price pressures and talking really about, although he didn't mention this, but if fed presidents have talked a lot about 75 basis points in a move in the European Central Bank earlier raised rates by the same increment. However, in terms of this really wasn't anything too new from the comments from Jerome Powell and colleagues. We knew that the fed was going to remain hawkish through this and perhaps oversold conditions or perhaps just some investors taking a look at the other side once inflation does roll over and the fed can either pause or slow down at least. It's pace of raising interest rates. Maybe that fed into those gains that we saw right now the ASX 200 up about two tenths of 1%. We saw a selloff in treasuries that sent yields higher. The two year yield was up 7 basis points to 3.50%. That's where it remains, as we start trading in Tokyo, the yield on the ten year at 3.31%, definitely a TI slipping little 82 98 a barrel, gold pretty steady, $1721. And in terms of currencies, the Japanese officials yesterday talking about the possibility, at least hinting at the possibility of market intervention, that did not have a big effect on dalyan. All you had now, one 43, 94 and the Euro just above parity with the dollar. Juliet. Thank you, Brian. Well, let's get more on our top story Queen Elizabeth II passing at the age of 96 joining us is Bloomberg correspondent Ed ludlow, who spent many years in our London bureau covering UK and European politics and also previously studied the British constitution at law school. Ed, you're also a Britain. I'm from the Commonwealth as well. This is our queen, but she was loved globally. I mean, a sad sad day. Yeah, she was. And I think at this stage of what is for me Thursday evening and as we head into Fridays that this was not just Queen Elizabeth II, the sovereign of the United Kingdom, but also the head of state of 14 other countries around the world, and that does include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica, also the head of the Commonwealth, 54 countries around the world, and as we get to this stage after a few hours that you see the reaction has been global, not just from global leaders, but citizens of all of these countries who are in mourning. You know, in the UK in particular, of course there are people that were not fans of the monarchy or the royal family. But at least we can all agree that she was respected for what she achieved throughout her period reigning as Queen Elizabeth II. Yeah, I think that's a really important point, no matter what your views on the monarchy, I mean, I think you can almost unequivocally say that most people loved Queen Elizabeth II. What happens next, though, what are the constitutional steps that have to be taken in the coming days? Yeah, so by the laws of the land, Charles becomes King Charles the third. We weren't sure what name he'd take, but in her address, UK prime minister Liz truss referred to him as King Charles the third, so he automatically becomes king, although there are a series of formal steps that follow. I think from Friday the UK linked to what we just discussed enters an official ten day period of mourning, parliament is suspended parliamentary business, the formalities are such that NPs, members of parliament will meet on Saturday, which is unusual and will continue to speak and give condolences, et cetera, but they'll also swear an oath of allegiance to Charles, which is another formality, and as you stated in the intro, the queen died in balmoral, Scotland, so over at some point in the next 5 days, the queen's coffin will be returned to the City of London where in Westminster hall shall have a formal lying in state and the expectation is that there will be a funeral within some point in the next ten days time, which is both a public holiday in the UK but it will be a markets holiday as well. You mentioned Liz Charles there the new British prime minister so let's talk about the actual role of the queen, especially for our global audience and those listening in the U.S.. I mean, her role in the British government we mentioned the Commonwealth as well, but what did she actually do? And what's the future role of Charles going to be? The UK has an astonishing and interesting constitution. Some of it is codified and in other words it's written down and some of it's not, you know, it's an ancient democracy relative to other democratic

"Will get through it and we will come out stronger the other side. But I say to my fellow conservatives, it's time for politics to be over. Folks, it's time for us all to get behind Liz truss. Boris Johnson and Liz truss will travel to Balmoral Castle in Scotland today where the queen will officially name her the new prime minister. So the incoming prime minister Liz truss may spend as much as a 130 billion pounds to fix annual lectures in gas bills for UK households. We had just the earlier dropping on the terminal that $40 billion energy aid package figure for UK businesses to find secretary defeated the former Chancellor of ishi sunak in the Conservative Party leadership race, she secured 57% of the votes and she's now pledging to take action on the UK economy. I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis dealing with people's energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply. That is the incoming prime minister Liz truss speaking their Sterling did get a boost after the news of her victory was announced the currency had tumbled to the weakest level in 20 years in recent weeks with investors wary of trusses planned to cut taxes despite soaring inflation. Meanwhile, Germany will keep two of its three remaining nuclear power plants available in reserve for this winter to make up for any shortfall in electricity supplies, the economy minister Robert harbeck says the government remains committed to phasing out nuclear power, despite Russia suspending natural gas flows through the Nord stream pipeline. As a result, Berlin is unlikely to meet its target of filling natural gas reserves to 95% capacity by the start of November. Well, with pressure growing on European energy demand, France's president Emmanuel Macron has called for a 10% reduction in power use in the country, but Citigroup's global head of commodities research Ed Morse says that a much larger drop in demand is needed. The best case for consumers at the moment is really sad to say is pulling back on consumption, conserving, they're doing it because high prices tend to do that. But there is no way that there can be a replacement of the loss Russian gas in Europe. Without there being phenomenal drop in demand, that was Citigroup per global head of commodities research Ed more speaking to Bloomberg, European energy ministers are set to discuss radical proposals to curb power prices when they hold an emergency meeting of Friday. Meanwhile, Ukrainian prime minister Dennis schmoyer has said that the country has an absolute commitment from European politicians to support Ukraine until it wins. That is despite the turmoil in the energy markets. The prime minister has told Bloomberg's Maria today, Russia is using energy to blackmail Europe. We can see absolute understanding from European leaders that we are in hybrid war. We have absolute understanding that Russia is Blake mailing, European politicians. And we have absolutely assured from European politics that they will stay with Ukraine, tell the women. Ukrainian prime minister schmoyer speaking to Bloomberg's Maria today, he also told us that Ukraine can fulfill its gas transit obligations to European customers, despite the war, Russia is still supplying gas to Europe via Soviet era pipelines through Ukraine that have remained open despite the invasion. And just lastly, retail sales growth slowed last month as shoppers tightened their purse strings in the face of Britain's escalating cost of living crisis, his Bloomberg's UN pots. The British retail consortium says that sales are up 1% in August compared to last year, but with prices rising much faster than that, the rise masks a significant drop in the amount of businesses are selling close sales with sluggish with volumes of white goods such as washing machines also hard hit. Separately budget grocery chain Iceland said that more than 60,000 people had applied in just two weeks for microloans allowing shoppers to pay by installments. That's more than the total number of loans the credit provider behind the scheme expected to over 18 months in London, I'm you and Potts Bloomberg daybreak Europe. Okay, our top story is there for you this morning. This is a tough time for the economy Boris Johnson's words from his speech that we brought to you live at 7 30 a.m. this morning. Want to get instant reaction for you from Nigel mills, the concert of MP for amber valley, Nigel, welcome back to the program. Thanks for being with us. Johnson's farewell speech, you called on him to resign. What did you make of his parting message? I mean, it was a lot more about promises than real achievements delivered. Well, I mean it's a difficult day for him. It was welcome. He got his whole hearted support to the new prime minister. I think that's the right thing for him to do. I mean, it's a little disappointing. He still doesn't recognize it. Anything really wrong to deserve to be leaving office, he has had some great achievements. I mean, we all perhaps forget how what a mess we're in over Brexit when he took over and then he had a pandemic to get us through and I think as you've just been talking about his record on Ukraine is extremely good. So he has had some very significant successes, but he brought himself down by just too many mistakes and he better off recognizing that. Nigel, what is your view? What is your reaction to the news that there's going to be a 130 billion pounds worth of support for households amid this energy crisis? And indeed, the additional news coming through just in the last few minutes that there are plans now for 40 billion pounds for businesses to support businesses. Yeah

"Walcott, who has more on what's going on around the world. Morning I'm a outgoing UK prime minister Boris Johnson used his file speech as the country's leader to lay out some of his successes in office whilst also praising his soon to be successor Liz truss. From the steps of number ten, Johnson said the UK comic will be able to endure the coming energy crisis. Now Boris Johnson Anders trust will travel to Balmoral Castle in Scotland today where the queen will officially name Liz trusts the new prime minister. Over in the U.S., California has narrowly avoided rolling blackouts as it battles a blistering heat wave, electricity use hits the highest level since 2017, with millions of homes and businesses cranking up air conditioners to cope with temperatures above 43°C. The grid operator says consumers need to use less energy as power demand as forecasts to be even higher today. And a U.S. judge has granted Donald Trump's request for a neutral third party to review documents taken by the FBI from his Florida home. The Trump appointed federal judge also temporarily blocked the Justice Department from using the C's material in its criminal investigation. The ruling suggested Supreme Court may eventually have to decide the issue of a former president's executive privilege. Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 Germans and analysts in more than a 120 countries, I'm James Wilcox, this is Bloomberg, Stephen. James, thank you very much for that as well. I'm very pleased to say that we have a returning returning customer to the program this morning, friend of the show, our charts guru, Eddie van der Waals back with us on daybreak Europe. We must have been off doing a lot of charts, Eddie. I have been busy looking studying the charts. Summer was all charts. Working up. I promise you I have really spent a lot of time preparing just for this return. I'm so picturing you with an etch a sketch on a beach somewhere. Tell us, what if you picked out for us today for your grand return? Good morning. Yes, so look, I'm looking at the like everybody in Europe really at that energy crisis at the moment. So for the chart of the hour today of the chart of the day, I'll listen this can pipe in I char chat on the terminals to see this and what they will see is that yesterday we had obviously over the weekend the news that Russia is not probably not going to restart flows of gas into Europe. And that's a worrying development. But what we saw was that prices did not push to record highs yesterday. Yes, we saw natural gas prices up about 17% by the end of the day. But we've seen moves at 10% or more, you know, quite often and what that tells me is that natural gas markets have priced in the worst case scenario of a complete stop of Russian flows already. I think the idea is that it's clearly bad news that there's no gas coming in, but it seems like this is already in the price. That's really interesting. So yes, it's something I reflected on around 7 o'clock a.m. London time yesterday when we saw that big jump, you know, a 10% jump of 20, 30% jump was huge, but €245 per megawatt hour. That's not 346, which the prices we'd seen earlier on in the year to your point there, Eddie. So that's the good news. I fear there's bad news coming. Or is it? Or is this as bad as it gets then for the energy crisis? Well, look, I think. We're up 2000% compared with a couple of years ago, right? So when we're coming into the winter, prices are extremely high, which probably tells us, yes, you know, this bit of bad news has been priced in. The problem is that whether remains a wild card, right? And the worst case scenario of no Russian flows plus an extremely cold, extremely long European winter, which we don't know at this moment. Hasn't been priced in yet, right? So I think that worst case scenario has yet to meet the price. So I think if we do see the winter hitting, just a very worrying winter, a lot of snow in Northern Europe, then I think it's going to be very difficult for Europe to maintain any gas in storage throughout the winter, and then, you know, we're really talking about crisis prices. So what exactly would that look like then if we're talking about shortages for gas in the winter? I think it's important to note here that while the natural gas market may have priced a pretty substantial worst case, other markets haven't. I think things like the Euro we saw the move in the Euro extending yesterday. The fall against the dollar. So I think the Euro hasn't completely priced in this doomsday scenario, if you will. And also the economic forecasts at the moment. We're only seeing a 60% chance of 55% chance of a recession in the next 12 months for Europe according to economists forecasts. I think if we get that doomsday scenario, then absolutely we're going to see the risk of recession rising in Europe. That doesn't seem true. Yeah, that doesn't seem to reflect the conversations we have with guests on TV and radio. You get a sense that, you know, quote unquote, most people we talk to, we're talking about recessions for Europe. This winter. You know what? I think traders and I think investors definitely are of that view. But when we look at the probability of a recession, according to economists for the Eurozone they are talking about 55%, it doesn't there's a disconnect, but we're also seeing that same disconnect between analyst forecast for. Earnings for companies and we're investors are willing to pay for those companies. So there is a split between what the economists think and what the so some markets just having moved on this fully in other markets. It's not having priced it in entirely. Eddie, thank you so much. Thanks for bringing us your chance today. What was the function at NI chart chat? And I charge that. There we go. That's where we go to find the professionally put together charts of Eddie van der belt nothing. He put together on a beach with an etch a sketch. That was Stephen Carroll. That's what he spent his summer series. Thank you very much to Ed. All right, thank you very much, Eddie, great to have you back on the program coming up next.
