Middle class upper class that we we have a conversation. Regarding larry elder most of them dislike him very much. They just don't like him. I think partially. It's the way that he comes across. I think it bothers a lot of black people. I realized larry will say work hard. Yes i agree with that but seems like a lot of time. He will put down black people. I think he may not even like being black. Be honest with you. But i just wanted to be briefed because i don't wanna go all into the conversation but this is what i see and i'm talking with my friends. They just don't like him period. Not even arguing with you. I just want you to understand. It has nothing to do with larry elder. It has to do with his views. That's why you couldn't name a black conservative. Coronavirus. Cases and hospitalizations continue to increase here in the U. S. Officials are concerned that they'll see a post holiday spike as a new variant is now entering the coronavirus picture here in L. A County, Calif eyes Jennifer Gold Live in Hollywood with more details, Jennifer Good morning. Good morning, you might remember. Health officials urged the unvaccinated not to travel at all for the holiday weekend, but unfortunately many ignored the request and now because of labor Day gatherings, widespread travel and now, with the majority of kids back in school for in person learning health officials are concerned it post Labor Day. Not Covid. 19 surge may already be brewing I wish to. Goodness I could tell you something else. But the bottom line is just this. We're gonna have we're gonna have a bunch more people die. Officials say. Although they are monitoring the Covid situation, closely nationwide data shows the number of potential coronavirus infections and deaths is not good in the US and the next four weeks, CDC data predicts as many as 19,000 deaths nationwide by September, 25th. Although 53% of Americans are fully vaccinated, tens of millions more are not making them vulnerable to the virus. Specifically the delta variant which is responsible for 99% of the cases across the U. S overcrowding, hospitals, and I C U. S. U. S Health and Human Services. Data shows hospitalizations nationwide, er up 158%. From one year ago. Infections up 316% from last Labor Day, and now a new variant of interest has been detected. It is called Mu. Mhm. The delta variant continues to be profoundly dominant in this country more than 99%. The isolates in this country are Delta. So Delta seems to be pushing out all the other variants. That doesn't mean we're not keeping our eye out on the mu variant and taking it seriously. We don't see it as an immediate threat right now. Health officials say. The mu variant, which was first detected in Colombia in January and is now reported in 39 states, may be able to evade vaccines and maybe more contagious than other covid strange They're not quite sure yet more research needs to be done. Trump's wall appeal to so many evangelical Christians and the rest of his vase. They want to be able to designate a we. And have a clear dividing line between them, and that we I agree. It's wait it's Christian. It's nationalist that they everything dangerous to it. The politics of us versus them both in America and the rest of the western world next time on to the point. You're listening to KCRW. This is morning edition LA public school. Teachers have been on strike off the job for a week now. And you've probably heard about some of the core demands being made by the teachers and their union United teachers, Los Angeles higher pay, but also smaller class sizes and more resources like hiring, more, nurses and librarians. But another issue that's been simmering beneath the surface has been the proliferation of charter schools a development. Some critics say threatens the very future of public education in Los Angeles. So how are these tensions playing out on a day-to-day basis? Daniel Hernandez, editor of L A taco recently hit the street to find out. He went to a campus in Baldwin hills. That's home to a traditional public school called Baldwin hills elementary pilot, but on the same side. There's also a co located charter school called new L A elementary. We asked Daniel what he found there. Well, first off I found. A picket line the teachers from Baldwin hills pilot magnet are represented by utilizing there were out there. But they were also picketing in front of a driveway that is used as kind of one of the main entrances for new L elementary, which is a charter school, which is not on strike, and is in session in students and teachers are there. So this created some tension instances where vehicles were just really just pushing into the picket line. There was one instance, where there was a bit of a physical altercation and some shoving even few police officers came by these sorts of scenes are happening all over Los Angeles at these co located charter schools, so was this a situation where the union members were holding their ground while they were picketing sort of, you know, saying, okay, we're not going to stand down for teachers and students to come in. Yes. Basically, you know, we have to remember this is a union with thirty thousand members and they're agitated and their interests. In advocating for their goals and further demands before a school district that they see as hostile to those demands. And so there is you know, a lot of energy and enthusiasm among the members of this union. And I think it's taken a big turn, you know, in recent years and become sort of more aggressive and more progressive in their goals and demands now, I should say that we have had reports of some co located situations where you have charters in public schools on the same campus over the past week where things have been very calm. There hasn't been tension. But obviously this was not one of those. And it sounds like that you found that the tensions that were playing out here were really symptoms of a bigger issue. Right. Yes. So there's a much bigger issue. Which is the fact that LA has more charter schools than any place in the country. A lot of people say they're very successful. And they provide opportunities for students that they might not get their traditional neighborhood public school. But the fact of the matter is when you talk to the teacher is on the ground. They see it as basically an encroachment on. Physical space because charter schools are required to be allocated classroom space on L USD campuses, or at least by the district one way or another. They're sort of shoved onto these campuses that have very long and rich traditions in many cases. And so they feel very threatened by this. And that's really one of the main reasons why in some of these schools, many teachers are very enthusiastically holding the line, I spoke to one occupational therapist who's a UTA member. Her name is DeLores. She works at both a non co located Elliot's D mc- public school and Baldwin hills elementary school, and she says that the difference is very clear at the other school. She has somewhere to work and Alden house elementary. She does not and this is how she described it.
