Multiple Locations and Hard Lessons with Michael Presson
"With big ideas. Welcome to cheers to business. Michael preston thank you so much for coming on the show. Tell how we met. Hey thanks karen. We met at the road map growth class a couple of weeks ago. Where miller leading that. And you're one of the subject matter experts. Yeah i'm just allowed tina awesome. Well thank you thank you. Didn't richard head invited me on and there were two other. Cpa's one from carshield belly and then dinner sharon from advisor so i was in very top company now the cpa anymore. But i just have fun now. And i just don't care about rules i just don't so tell us about your business. I own four locations of franchise called one eight hundred radiator Started out in daphne. I bought that location about seven years ago and then the other locations over the last several years it is a wholesale autopart supplier. Okay so your card says one eight hundred radiator in a ac. Yep yeah it's you can tell by the name when that company was created it was originally created out of california in kind of a hub and spoke warehouse strategy and then about fifteen years ago. The decided to start selling franchises to get local ownership across the country. I love jazz candy now. Own wouldn't find franchise. We actually have two territories mobile and baldwin county for payroll bolt and people don't realize that two franchise didn't know that. Yeah and so this whole go. Local height the chains be. Be careful when you're hating because you don't know whether it's really corporate or if it's franchises because of its franchise i could be a local. That could be your neighbor. That owns that right exactly. And that's when was the taglines that we talk about. His were national company with local ownership. Two hundred twenty five locations across the country and in canada on four of them see. I didn't wanna reinvent the wheel. Garon knew that. Cpa's cannot make money doing payrolls just doesn't make sense because it's the billing structure right. People want to wrap theirselves around the business and not want to reinvent the wheel. And i think that's the smartest thing about franchises. It's all laid out for you. Yeah well i got into the franchise business we. We lived in memphis before we moved to a fair hope about seven years ago. Eight years ago we own a little business called three dog bakery based out of kansas city and a dog bakery. We bay birthday cakes in all fresh all natural foods in it was a fascinating little business and it taught me the value of franchises because i have no history in baking and neither did my wife but they taught us everything we needed to know. We had all the ingredients. We hit all of the recipes. And so we're good to go. So when i moved here i moved here to buy this business. But i was comfortable with the franchise model. So now you went from one franchise and kenny. Nap talked about this before you know. We're at a good place right now. So we're not looking for growth but you think about it. I've had a business with multiple locations before the struggles and tell us your three top challenges for all those listeners out there that own a business in hard enough as it is but then to open up. A second location yeah. I don't feel like that. I'm a control freak but i learned a much more of a control freak as a small business owner than i ever thought. I was before from the perspective that you've got to see in lead by being present a lot of times and in trust is a big issue and processes help solve both of those issues. I've lost in been hurt a lot by being in not having the right processes in place. But i'm a much better business person now as a result of those valuable lessons as a really good point because every time i've been burned i've learned something from it and i'm not a micromanager. Yeah i'm just not. I don't have time. I hire smart people. Expect you to do your job. Yep same here. I was in corporate world for twenty years with the medical company. Regional leadership been Sales leadership sales operations moved around quite a bit so a little comfortable with travel and comfortable with leading teams. That aren't directly in front of me. So i think that looking back that helped me be prepared to lead multiple locations right. Secondly when i got down here the first employees are hired. My wife actually found used to work at sam's and always joke at this. The best thing we've ever bought sam's is jessica and jessica is fantastic and jessica is a a rule follower a thorough honest Trustworthy person lover to death. That's how i define. Yeah yeah absolutely. And there's no way in the world. I could have gone to number two three or four locations. If it hadn't been for jessica and every time that we considered. It asked. Jessica i because i wanted to make sure she was okay with us expanding and doing these other things and she was always on board. And that's given me the freedom to be able to lead and not have to operate as much you know. We talk about people all the time that i

"East or just moving to the In East Northeast and we could feel the effects here at home Wednesday into Thursday Friday, Kenny Rule, It really had a chance of rain this weekend. But like I said, they're already dealing with rain fall into the coastal areas of mobile, Baldwin County and into the Florida Panhandle this morning the clouds were receiving Today already from the tropical system, So just been a crazy crazy year in the Atlantic Basin for Ah, tropical systems, and we ran out of names we had to get into Alfa and Beta. It's just Ah, just been nuts. 2020 though it goes with it doesn't 60 degrees. Currently, the Birmingham airport winds around the east northeast at 15 to 20 MPH gusting at times above that were in the fifty's too low sixties now and here we go. The next 24 hours were forecast to make it up into the mid seventies today. With partly cloudy skies eventually going into this afternoon hold onto another dry day for us today. Tomorrow morning. We start out in the fifties, and then we warm up into the seventies again. It's going to be a dry forecast for us today tomorrow, but the rain from tropical Storm beta are the remnants thereof. The remnants of beta giving us a chance of rain Wednesday into Thursday, and that could take us into Friday and possibly the weekend as well. The next big thing is just that we're watching beta and its effects that could be felt not only here but of course, down into the coastal areas of Alabama into the Florida Panhandle. Let's get to our first alert Extended forecast tomorrow first day of fall. We start in the fifties warm up into the seventies. And then the chance of rain from beta. We have AH, Thursday and Friday is their highest rain chance here locally but scattered showers on tap for the weekend. We're going with a 40% chance of rain. At this point, We'll tweak those numbers.

"It is. Various males and county commissioners. We have often every assistant humanly possible. Unfortunately, our local leaders are well experienced in emergency manage. They've had a lot of practice over the years. So they are well aware that all they need to do is to let us know they're Neji will be standing there shoulder to shoulder with them all the way. All right, Governor. I'll be there. Also pledging on praising President Trump for the support that she's getting here in our state from the federal government as well, Everybody politically and officially or, you know, battling this out, Bill Black joins us now from our sister station will be okay S J to talk a bit more about exactly what's happening where this storm has certainly pounded Gulf shores in that whole south Alabama area bill. Good morning. Good morning, J T even as we speak. The center of Hurricane Sally still sits on top of Gulf shores, right landfall about 4 45 5 o'clock this morning, and it's just such a slow moving storm. I think when it was at its peak movement, it was going about three MPH. It's at two MPH right now moving to the north Northeast and just continues to pound the area with tons of water. What about evacuations Bill in your area. Has that been something Everybody's been concerned about? Have a lot of people evacuated. We did have quite a few people evacuate, and the governor and local officials have requested some mandatory evacuations in what we call zones wanted to which of the lower Are lying areas in mobile and Baldwin County. There were evacuations. There were shelters set up. However, ah lot of people decided to ride this one out. They were thinking it could be no more no more than a Category one storm. And I didn't see any really issue with people who have been through hurricanes. Unfortunately, they look a category levels and they think, well, that's not really that bad. Well, In this case, Sally gained a little bit of strength before she made landfall ended up being a Category two with maximum sustained winds of 105 MPH is a matter of fact, those air still the max when she's still a 105. She's still a Category two. Sitting on top of Gulf shores right now, but it's affected everything, especially our communities to the east of Gulf Shores, Pensacola, Independent of Florida Panhandle all just getting hammered right now and not only massive flooding but also lots of loss of power. I just did another day because I was going to be talking to you guys right now we have Power outages of over 119,000 in Mobile, Escambia County, Alabama. That's the Atmore area over almost 5000 there. Baldwin County M. C. We have two different power facilities to Baldwin County Ball in county emcee with almost 77,000 and Baldwin Riviera. Just about 43,000 and then another 129,000 outages plus in the Florida Panhandle, So people are waking up and not really being able to connect a cz much as they would like to. Hopefully they they charged up those smart devices and are able to listen through streams and get this information down here. Yeah. Take a look at the map earlier this morning. I mean, this thing kind of shifted from New Orleans east into Pascagoula, and then even further East there in mobile and all the way over to Apalachicola. So you're right. Panama City destined Pensacola. That whole area. Getting pounded this morning as well is what's happening there in mobile and Gulf shores. So, uh, this is a slow mover. What's the first thing that you're concerned with being in that area's faras helping folks out in the all the flooding going on for today and tomorrow? Well, that's the biggest issue right now is the rescue crews and power crews can't can't get out yet. It's too too dangerous at this point time. So many roadways have been closed to block and will continue to be that way through today because we expect having rainfall amounts another another one or 2 ft of rain through the day today because Sally will barely get out of the pan handling barely get out of mobile involving county. By this afternoon, so we're going to get a lot more rain. We're gonna have a lot more flooding all this. Obviously all the streams, rivers are already well flooded and the coastline is just taking a battering. It's it's going to be a different looking coastline. When it's all said and done made contact this morning with some folks I know on all no island. Which normally can withstand storms fairly well, and they're getting a lot of flooding over the island as well. So there's gonna be a lot of loss of property, unfortunately, haven't heard of any loss of life. We pray that it is not that that's gonna be education. You don't have any loss of life, but we've had Freeze crashing through homes this morning about a fact mobile rescue was actually trying to rescue a woman. Right now he's trapped in her bedroom from a tree who fell on our house in the last couple of hours. She's OK, but she's penned in and they're just having a hard time getting her out under these conditions, so that kind of stuff's going to persist. Ah, lot of areas they won't be able to get to She'll probably after 12 today. As a matter of fact, Orange Beach has got a curfew in effect. The police department down in Orange Beach, says nobody on the road till after 12 o'clock today, so it's going to be a mess in once we can't get out and see. I mean, the power companies are standing by to get out there and start replacing and repairing lines and removing the fallen trees and limbs. But that's gonna take a while. All right, Bill Black and chaos. Jae in mobile this morning, Bill. Thank you for the update. Stay safe, brother. We'll talk again soon. 6 28, Alabama's morning news, traffic and weather together. Coming up three minutes. Stay with us. Church's.

"Familiar with it is covered in water right now. And we'll get the latest from team reports in just a moment. Right now, let's get the latest on what's happening with Sally with Mickey Ferguson and the first lawyer Weather Center. Hey, it'll be difficult to get the images out of there because it's gone dark. You got no power. The bridges are closed. Coming into Gulf shores on the island there for the bridge over Perdido Pass. It's been close to some people are stuck there without power and reign continues to just hammer that area. We are getting a temporary break in the rain for Gulf shores because it's going through the eye of the hurricane right now. Orange Beach going through the eye, so it's making landfall as we speak and continuing to advance off to the North. Let me put this In motion here and you can see the center of circulation. We've got touring Tornado watches posted down there. Flash flood warnings for several areas. And the rain continues to fall. This is the projected path of Sally and now cat to hurricane looks like it's just going to clip southeast Alabama. So that could mean less of an impact here at home, I would say areas west of I 65 may not. SIA's much rainfall areas south of I 20 and east of I 65 for our area might have the best chances of rain and the closer you are to Auburn. The better. Your chances are of getting wet today. 70% chance of Rain, Though it looks like we'll get it in some form at this point going into this afternoon highs up to 75 degrees, all right, we'll have Ah, update on Ah, great looking weekend once all the rain is done. That's coming up. Let's check in with toy Thornton. All right. Thank you very much right now making we're going. We're going to go to Fred Hunter, because, you know, as you mention Hurricane Sally again, it's made windfall. So what is the Alabama Gulf Coast feeling right now? All right, let's go to Fred Hunter as he is down there right now, Fred, We've seen some images coming out of all the water there. Describe what you're seeing there for us. Well, the scene right now is that the rain a cz? Miku was pointing out. Let up somewhat. We're still getting a fairly strong wind. But the wind is not as strong as they were around midnight as we began to feel the effects now kind of amplify what Mickey was saying. The Baldwin County M. E is saying Now this is direct quotes. I'll read it to you if you are On the island. You will not be able to get off the island until the bridge is reopened. Of course, there's a wind threshold there, and when the wind drops below 40 MPH, they'll reopen the bridge. But as of now there are a number of roads closed. Also Baldwin County Sheriff's Department and the ball Around midnight asked the people in fish for Tito and sticks, rivers to evacuate. And of course, we do still have the flash flood morning until seven o'clock. Ironically, today is the exact date 16 years ago when Ivan struck this very spot. I'm standing at the lodge at Gulf State Park and, of course, the lodge The old Lodge. Was wiped away along.

"Southwest Florida, dropping heavy rain in that area, creating some dangerous travel conditions from flooding there. Tropical storm forecasting to be a hurricane, though by the time it makes landfall. So Louisiana Mississippi, he's going my gosh, not again. But there they are. And how will it impact us? Mickey Fergusson joining us now? With all that tell you after this Atlantic hurricane season lots of whether people will be taken some time off after November because it has been busy and we already have another tropical storm projected become a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico as we're talking about Sally Tropical Storm Sally at this point, and you can see what's headed towards the Florida Panhandle, already reaching The southern tip of the Florida Panhandle. Right now, we have tropical storm Sally projected become Hurricane Sally, making landfall going into tomorrow afternoon on the Mississippi Gulf coast from there the remnants of this system moving across Alabama, depending on its forward speed if it slows down Could be a major wet weather producer for our area. We have hurricane watches extending on the Gulf Coast, Tropical storm watches extended into mobile and Baldwin counties. We have that tropical storm warning. Excuse me, I should have said Tropical Storm warnings projected for Mobile Baldwin County extending into the Florida Panhandle and we have flash flood watches posted for our area as we continue. To track Sally the center of Circulation moving onshore. The outer bands of rain moving into Alabama, most of the rain and winds from that system to the east of the center of Circulation. So that means ah whole lot of rainfall for Jefferson County, Tuscaloosa County, ST Clair Calhoun County southward. With A lot of rain headed our way. All right. How much rain? We talked about How about two inches in Hamilton five inches in the Jefferson County almost six inches in the Shelby County southwards so we could see that Remnant low move across our area. You can track Sally as low a cz Well, a cz Any tropical disturbance on our first lawyer weather up and get our local forecast as well. By the way, Let's get into that our local forecast so far we're seeing variably cloudy skies 76 degrees at the Birmingham airport mid seventies. For Tuscaloosa County into Shelby County into Calhoun County, where 74 degrees this morning and we're not seeing much going on our first alert. AKI track radar and satellite imagery for now. It's a forecast today. That's very similar to what we saw yesterday. Most of us staying dry. Our high's getting up into the upper eighties toe low nineties for this afternoon. And you can see a few scattered showers showing up in our next 24 hours. All right, So our first alert seven a planning forecast shows a 30% chance of rain today were ramping up to 60% for tomorrow. 90% for Wednesday. We'll just have to wait and see what Sally is going to do, but it looks like a lot of rainfall for us going into mid week toward the tail into this weak At this point, we're going with a 20% chance of rain on Friday. And sunshine for the weekend and cooler temperatures. It all depends on what Sally's going to do. If it stalls have to tweak this forecast right now, let's get a check on traffic. Toy, Thornton. All right, Mickey. Thank you very much. You're headed in bound or outbound on 2 80 post coming in from Chelsea. Maybe going out that out in that direction. Rather you are looking really good on.

"Of escambia county or you live in baldwin county you're listening to us across state lines kind of like a bootleg in you're listening to us across the state line is okay there is a tornado warning in effect in that part of the area of west side of escambia county the new north west corner of escambia county and then baldwin mobile that area until ten twenty seven tonight there is going to be a tornado warning they have seen and this is going to be probably off and on throughout the night okay in fact it's it's really one of these things where if you live in that area and i've been saying this you've got to be prepared as if a tornado might hit just like you got to have a go bag and be prepared for hurricanes just in case i know you're vacuous shen route have your cash on hand have your documents you'll have your concealed carry if you've got a gun at all it he's got to think about this stuff in advance it doesn't catch you off guard it's that wayne more so when it comes to tornadoes because your response time is so small you know you have if there is a tornado in your area and there's an alert you know you might have one two minutes may be to respond may be i mean when we get up i'll tell you how it happens in our houses you know the phones go off it's a trail we're in the closet you know where we were we know we go kids dog in right that's that's what you do that how you keep safe you know i can remember a couple of years ago when we had those bad tornadoes go through the olive rudy area has the plan yet i could just remember just sitting there as well during storm coverage on weaa.

"The water is going to continue throughout the night it's the thing that we have been the basically two things are always concerned about when it comes to these kinds of storms number one were concerned about storms herds that twice gambia county and santa rosa county issued their evacuation orders for jobs josh the low lying close to the water areas in its gambia was owns anb in santa rosa was onate so it that's a very low level of evacuation order but it wasn't evacuation order from from this morning so that's the one thing and it's always the storm surge that has the concern because when a few feet of water comes in especially if it's four to six feet of water that can be deadly you don't think about that but that can push your car right off or wherever it is that his plenty unof storm to really do some significant damage to a homework obviously the people to cars and things like that that's why that's the thing that we're most concerned about the other thing that were concerned about and this is particularly because we are sitting on the western are the sorry the eastern side right of this storm is were concerned about the way these winds can swirl the way they can blow and pull energy off of the gulf off with the heat of the golf in the way that can then affect internally within a storm that generally is is swirling counterclockwise but inside of that you can have small pockets the behaved very differently and when those small pockets start to behave very differently that's why you can get tornado active that's why you can get a tornado and so currently we are for the next about twenty minutes or so there is a tornado warning for northwestern escambia county and into baldwin county to the north of mobile it is going north western that storm mm system is moving pretty rapidly about forty five miles an hour but we are keeping an eye on that that is one that at the moment again is not one that we are very concerned about uh for the rest of a scam you county but for that particular area definitely one that we are watching very very carefully eight twenty nine here on news radio 620 of your to make you click if you're in that area you need to.

"Part of the county so far enough away from much of our listening area but it is also affecting eastcentral bottling county as well that's going to be in effect until nine forty five as national weather service just two minutes ago uh in the case it is a severe thunderstorm producing a tornado is moving eight miles north of lilian or about actually eight miles west of gonzalez moving northwest at forty five miles an hour and so this is a radar indicated tornado so again it's eight miles west of gonzalez and it's a moving at what did i say again here which has my i'm getting all these alerts coming it die is moving northwest so that's that's the way it's moving so as moving away from from those areas though andrew year thing about tornadoes your experiences with them out in the midwest my ex mary's is here on the it yeah and the eastern part of the catching particularly living on the east coast these tornadoes do move literally that's kind of speed in these kinds of store and it's very interesting because we've actually gotten two different alerts i think they've now extended the time of that the first one they had a going until his usaid brian 945 the one that i just got in odds said the same start time same part of the county northwest portion the county west to gonzalez's toward the alabama florida state lining into the corner of the panhandle amend into baldwin county their extending that until nine fifty eight tonight so that is another forty one minutes still the vat when is supposed to go up on but yeah and this is this is part of the reason that we're doing this as well as just to keep you informed of where the danger zones are because for in this case you know my phone didn't go off right yeah this this does not affect me personally this is not where we live but we know are listening area is well within that zone and we just want to make sure that everybody even people who might not have there cellphone might not have it on you know you can have us and you can watch the football game okay i mean that's a way in fact i got a couple of text in.
