"And based on the skin and skull fractures around the wound, the gun would have been like right up against her head when the trigger was pulled. Other than the bullet wound, the only other injury is a small bruise on her right arm, but they can't even determine what that injury came from or if it even has anything to do with her death like it could have been before. And there's no signs of a struggle, like no scrapes or scratches on her face or no defensive wounds. What they keep coming back to is they're assuming if she's standing that she would have had scrapes and scratches as she falls onto the pavement after being shot. But I guess in my mind, I think you could say that about anything, whether she was shot by herself or by someone else, like I don't know that the lack of that means anything to me. It could fit both scenarios, someone else shooting her or her shooting herself. It gets brought up a lot though if you look at this case, I'm like, I don't really understand that, but whatever. Now, unfortunately, based on the autopsy alone, they can't say for sure whether she was murdered or died by suicide. And at this point, news that a police officer has died on bald head island has made its way around the small community. And like any small community, rumors have started swirling about what might have happened. The civilians who saw D uncovered on the ferry landing have told their friends and neighbors about what they saw, specifically about the blood that they saw pooled on the side of her head. But there are others that aren't willing to buy this suicide theory so easily. And the thought that there could be a murderer on their island does not sit well with any of the residents. And so at 11 in the morning on the 23rd, sheriff Hewitt calls a press conference alongside the bald head island police chief, Karen grasty. Even though they don't have many answers at this point, they want to try and put the community's mind at ease.

"Again, the only injury she actually has is that single entry wound on the very back of her skull. There's no exit wound. But the Emmy notes the entry wound as being on the right side of her head, just underneath her ear. And completely makes up an exit wound that just isn't there. Now, all of this false information does end up getting fixed when her autopsy is performed later that morning, but it ends up having devastating consequences because when the news of that incorrect location of the gunshot wound. And again, this is where I'm like, was this dude just eyeballing stuff? Because I know the blood was on that side of her face, but like, there's no hole. Yeah. Making up an exit wound like, I mean, that's like basic basic observance, especially to a skull because you do have these sort of flat bones that clearly show entry and exit. And this is what I can't write off as even you being just bad at your job. Like this, I don't know. This feels wrong in all of the worst ways. So again, when this news comes out of this incorrect location, so people start hearing. I don't know how they're hearing, but this is word is getting around that she was shot on her right side below her ear. And the investigators end up hearing this. So some people start to think that this might not have been a murder, but rather D died by suicide. But here's the thing, the scene back on bald head island doesn't quite support that. And what they find there leaves them with more questions than answers. You're listening to crime junkie from audio chuck. inflation has been this historic pandemic which is upended life in so many different ways and particularly has upended America's supply chains Balance of power with David Weston on Bloomberg radio Coming up this hour my conversation with doctor Anthony Fauci about pulling back on COVID restrictions and whether we need a fourth shot Plus Senate banking committee chairman sherrod Brown on getting past the stalemate over President Biden's 5 fed nominees and former president Trump could be in trouble for his mishandling of classified documents while in office But first this week president Joe Biden said he will nominate judge katangi Brown Jackson to be the first black woman on the Supreme Court Judge Jackson deserves to be confirmed as the next justice of the Supreme Court I met with the chairman and ranking members in the Senate Judiciary Committee senator dick Durbin senator chuck grassley and my hope is that they will move promptly And I know they'll move fairly And historic selection that would add a fresh liberal voice with new life experience to the court without changing its conservative tilt For more on the effect on the court I spoke with university of Alabama law professor Terra Lee grove This will be the first African American woman on the U.S. Supreme Court Judge Jackson is also the first person since thurgood Marshall who has experience as a public defender in criminal cases which will be a huge change I think it's going to be it's a momentous momentous moment for the Supreme Court One of the things that struck me I worked there you've worked there She has a very diverse background And I'm not talking about just race here At all I mean she's been a public defender She's also worked at big law firms She's been part of this she's been chairman of the sensing committee We haven't had that many justices with that diverse background I agree And I think that helps because the U.S. Supreme Court is a generalist court It handles a lot of different cases Some involving corporations some involving criminal criminal work a lot involving sentencing in criminal cases And I think this background is going to be really helpful Judge Jackson has also been a judge now on the district court in D.C. and the D.C. Court of Appeals there are judge Jackson has been exposed to a lot of cases involving federal agencies And that's really important for the Supreme Court's work as well There's the question of confirmation obviously It's too early to tell how this will play out But it did strike me looking at it You're right of course she's on the D.C. circuit Court of Appeals in the federal system But she hasn't been there very long And I wonder whether she gets the best of both worlds she has that credential she has an experience but she doesn't have a big body of work I think that's right Now judge Jackson was on the district court for a number of years before she joined the Court of Appeals And so she has a body of work from that But she doesn't have a large body of work from the Court of Appeals I think one of the key factors of her recent appointment is that she was confirmed to the D.C. circuit Court of Appeals by the same Senate that will be considering her for the U.S. Supreme Court And she was confirmed you know pretty easily and at least as easy easy in terms of our current confirmation process And I think that bodes very well for a reasonably smooth confirmation process this time around as well Well it may make it more difficult for some senators to object when they just approved her for the Court of.

"Let's get to today's episode while the show. Thank you land us. Thanks for having me. Lauren wilkes calls As i said in the opening their put down a book. That's some great price. Yeah i was really happy. Because i lauren herself happened to have written an unpronounceable book with five. So the fact that she said that about mine made me feel really happy. She was she was very kind to do that. I really enjoyed the book too. And i'm going to get into but before we do that. Just a few. Thanks apache for our listeners. A even the them book prize twice a finalist for the pen robert bingham prize sir. What raleigh for fiction recipient of pat conroy legacy ward from sabo. You also teach at unc ashville and you very active in the running community. And this is your fourth the book you a a land more common home. A kind of a thriller the stock road mercy and other throw the last ballot historical fiction setting guest on. You bet a suspense there and then goes come home as i said a mystery and somewhat of a thriller to Now i having mentioned your books. I have a question. Because when i was looking back when i read i noticed that You're somewhat attracted to sheriffs as characters in in a landmark out at home. What are your narrators is. A sheriff clam barfield a sheriff with his own painful past. And then you bring this book when goes come home and we made another troubled sheriff who's the primary narrator for this story. Has names wants to talk about him but tell us why. You're drawn to sheriffs as a way to tell these stories and also take a minute to tell us about what's to barks so. I don't know that i'm so. I don't know that. I'm necessarily drawn to sheriffs in as much as i am just aware of what interesting places they hold in these rural communities. What i'm really interested in is rural living rural lives and how people navigate those spaces because in in rural spaces especially in the american south oftentimes justice. Kinda takes care of itself and less people like sheriff's deputies or or other you know social leaders or people to elected office step in justice can very easily tip one way or another and you know north carolina. My my first book landmark konin home was set in madison county. Which is a big county in this. Most recent novel when goes come home is set in brunswick county which is another enormous county in their own. Polar ends of the state madison in western north carolina brunswick in about as far southeast as you can go actually as far southeast as you can go in these. You're just big wild spaces. There's a lot of land their small towns primarily but brunswick is near wilmington which is a pretty metropolitan cosmopolitan city in madison near ashville which is also a pretty much a politics cosmopolitan mobile city in the divide between these spaces. It's something that's always really interested me. The last place people in wilmington wanna go especially in nineteen eighty-four brunswick county and i think the same could be said in nineteen eighty six when lenore kind than home was set in madison county. Now you know no one can any longer afford to live in. Wilmington will so they're all going to madison county in brunswick county But you know. Winston is a sheriff. He's he's up for reelection. It's the fall of nineteen ninety four. The elections happening in one week. And it's dawning on him. He served as county well. He's he's someone who believes in justice he believes in you know the letter of the law but he also understands that the right thing. The legal thing aren't always the same thing any kind of walk that fine line of putting pressure on himself. That many people in the community are never really aware of. He's also got some things in his past. That are kind of haunting him. Still to stay upsetting him would be Would be to putting it lightly. But you know he's in this moment in the fall of nineteen eighty-four and he's up against this kind of nationalist figure this this wealthy son of a land developer. Who's had everything handed to him. Who gets to play all these various parts of tough guy. Rich guy and robin hood guy for those. He appeals to and our sheriff. Winston is pretty aware that he's not. He's not gonna win this reelection. Even though he's done everything right. It's just it's just the world around him. As changed us nineteen eighty-four the war on drugs raging and when this airplane appears. And there's this dead man alongside the runway all of these nationalist sympathies many of which were familiar with if we've participated in the political process here in america from two thousand eighteen or two thousand eight to now really or two thousand sixteen especially many of these. These these polarization were were president. Nineteen eighty-four as well. They weren't quite as explicit as they are now but they were certainly implicit in places like north carolina in so the sheriff has released struggling in this moment. Trying to get to the bottom of this mystery trying to heal his family trying to assure his legacy in this community that he's sworn to serve and protect and bradley fry the wealthy white supremacists. Who's running for sheriff as you mentioned. He's going to be a little reading. We're going to have an echo shows up while they're kind of looking over this plane that's crashed on a very short runway too big applying to short runway But you mentioned the setting. And i'd like to talk about that just a little bit more because Ah down in that area southport. specifically ocala north carolina cross waterway. There which is the mouth of the cape fear river Is bald head island which is now very ritzy. kinda place not ocalan. I'm just wondering. Do you have a personal connection to their because you sort of brought that area to life in the book and you really got the feel of someone who's kinda knew that area have you been down there officiant if you've been to the beach what's going on there. It's kind of interesting store. You know. I grew up in the western part of the state went to college in asheville. Live a good part of my life. There and also in west virginia and i always thought that appalachia was kind of inside me and i think it is but i'm also realizing that i'm the kind of person no matter where i live. I wanna set down some kind of anchor. Some kinda roots and we moved down to wilmington on my wife and i from west virginia in the fall of two thousand thirteen and then we had two children and those are the ultimate routes and my parents coincidentally left gastonia where i was raised. They moved down to oak island in nineteen ninety eight and it was very sleepy. Small very local kind of island village island when they moved down. So they've been down there. My dad passed away twenty sixteen but they've been down there. My mom's been down there for going on twenty twenty three years or so and so when we moved back here to this part of the country in two thousand thirteen first daughter was born in twenty fourteen. Our second in twenty sixteen. I looked around and i thought their lives being from this place with salt water and people with boats and this landscape that is so flat and and and so humid so buggy and so beautiful and so mysterious and so historic their childhoods are going to be so different from my experience. There's there there might very well come a time when we see the world or the state or our country or one another differently because i am not from here and they are very much from here and i thought i've got to do something about that so i thought maybe i'll try to write a book about this part of the state and i just kind of stumbled into the store in this.

As you know, restaurants have had a rough go. They have. Yeah, And, uh, he was feeling some desperation after a lot of the cove id. Lockdowns, and he came up with a plan. To make some extra money. Yeah. Like a lot of people. Yep. On Lee. His plan was a legal. Oh, no. What? What did he do? Well, he set fire to his own restaurant. Oh, that's not good. No in several locations inside the restaurant. He tried to set a fire trying to make it look like arson. Maybe he was going to cash in on some. That's terrible, right? He was going to cash in on some Insurance money. But the problem Do you think he'd know this because it was his restaurant. The problem was he had a really good fire. Uh, Sprinkler system. So he's charted started her. He tried to start his business on fire, and it backfired when his Fire prevention measures kicked exactly And so also, he clearly forgot that he also had a camera system security system. In his restaurant. So when he was caught on video that he had set up, Okay? Yep. So double, stupid because not only could he not set the fires because the sprinkler system was so good. He also couldn't get away with it because his security system was so good. Investigators, eh? So basically everything was so good because he was so dumb. Yeah. This happened back in August. And apparently, there is still an ongoing investigation. Not sure what more they need to investigate. Yeah. I mean, they caught him on camera. So what's the issue? I don't know. Was he arrested? Uh, he has been charged with one count of arson at this point, Okay, which were quite which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison with a maximum sentence of 20 years. If convicted, that's not gonna end well. They did say their extremely grateful that no one was actually injured during the incident, and all the law enforcement agencies collaborated to bring this individual to justice. Dumb. Mm. Okay. Would you like to tell another crazy, stupid idiot story In this time? I will keep my mouth shut. Yes. Well, I mean, don't keep your mouth shut. Because if you don't talk that won't work. But I will tell you the story about a and this time we need to go toe Indiana. Kentucky. We're going to Indiana where I want to tell you about a 33 year old man that is facing reckless driving charges after he drove 200 MPH actually 213 miles. Per hour on I 4 65, which is a interstate, of course in Indianapolis. Now that in and of itself is not crazy, Stupid idiots that I mean, It's pretty dumb, right? It's done, but it's not. When you're going that fast If you sneeze your dad Yeah. Although I would love to see what it feels like to go 200 Miles an hour in a controlled setting, like not when somebody safety devices I mean, I guess I have gone 200 Miles an hour. It's just I've been on a jet plane when that happened. Not in a vehicle of my own driving well, again, driving 213 Miles an hour while dumb is not crazy, Stupid idiot status. It's how we know he drove 213 MPH. That earned him crazy, Stupid idiot status. How we know he drove 213 MPH. Yeah. Um I'm so scared. I know. You're like, I don't want to guess. No. Go ahead. Guess. Do your best. A psychic to know he posted it on social Media, moron. Yeah. So he thought it would be home layering it take a video. Yes. Oh, yes. So police said that the video shows the Lamborghini. This was post uploaded or not, but I say Instagram. It was uploaded to YouTube allegedly showing a black Lamborghini stopped in the left lane on then, police say the video shows the Lamborghini rapidly. Accelerating with the speedometer reaching a speed of 213 MPH before slowing down. A follow up investigation said that they were able to estimate Lamborghini passed another vehicle at a speed of just under 200 MPH. Which is terribly dangerous. That is so smart. Can you imagine if you're just like tootling along on the interstate going, you know the required 65 mph. Maybe you're going 70. Because you think five MPH over the speed limit. Probably not going to get me in trouble. I'll just be two to little long over here and then all the sudden you see this thing coming from behind you. You're dead. Yeah, I will say in court. He was like, Yeah, that was a fake video. Somebody edited it. My cart doesn't even go that fast. Nice try, buddy. He has been sighted in the past. For many traffic citations, I would say I don't think the first time you decide to go fast. You hit 2 13. Yeah, I feel like it takes some practice also, I don't know. I'm trying to think of the fastest I've ever been in a vehicle, okay? But I think probably for me. It's 85 90. Maybe 90 maybe 90 Probably not. Why are you looking at me like that? Well, what do you mean? Probably not. I feel.
