Sally Fox: The Mother of Organic Cotton
"There. Sally Fox who is considered by many in the industry to be the mother mother of modern organic cotton throughout her career. Fox has fought the good fight. She reminds me kind of like the fashion version of Jane Goodall. She kind of looks like her too but she's had middling success in this fight. Conventional cotton farmers in the American southwest did their best to quash endeavors. I mean when she told me the stories in she lives in a trailer and when she told me Over T in her trailer about what. The farmers did to run her Outta town. Bakersville or field and in in Arizona. Crazy Levi's I applauded and encouraged and even contracted her to supply the company with her organic cotton and she was wearing jeans made of if it when I met her but then after a management shakeup in the nineties the company abruptly cut her loose and that led to her bankruptcy eh yet. She's never given up now on Vera. Dita's farm her one hundred and thirty Acre stead north west of Sacramento. She still breeds and nurtures cotton as well as raises sheep for wool and she farms crops to sequester carbon and build topsoil for her. This is the only way forward right now. She said the climate goal for the Paris accord is point four percent carpet sick with station per acre per year we have to get the carbon out of the atmosphere before there's no return.

He's got this Fisher the line. He thinks it's all out of fight. He gets John Hahn, sue over to. You know, he's got a big hook. It's gonna hook that thing in and it escapes and met him basically breaks down and Wales at the heavens. Yeah. Does a lot of that in this episode in this movie. He's yelling at the sky also. Because he's so obsessed with this. Tune of these guys don't pay. And he's like we introduced in these scenes to, to important things, but math McConnell. Hey, he wants us to in a and he's so obsessed with two. He doesn't have any money numb, and so what does he do next? Is that when it goes Diane lane? That's what we see we see that guy in the business suit on the beach. Oh, yeah. There's this nerdy business suit guy. He's clearly played a nerd little. Serious-minded fellow in glasses to wait out into the into the water in his suit, for reasons we do not understand as of yet, it's a real. Understand. That aspect of it. Why was he just going out in his full suit into the water is always trying to get to Matthew mcconaughey or Baker dill should say, the suited man is trying to get bigger does attention but he's always just like a few seconds too late. Like as everytime, Baker does boat is leaving the dock this guy runs up like Baker deal Baker Dell. Yeah. He just goes to his house, I think house is being charitable, but we can go on. He lives in a giant ship in create like Wally. Stuff. So I think this is speaking of houses he goes to someone's house. Well, so I believe this is the point which he gets into manufacturers fight with his trustees second mate, because he's worried about the fact that he basically pay him anymore, or is that a little bit? I first Bakersville goes to his only source for reliable money in these troubled economic times, Diane lane, a character in this movie that does not pay off in anyone. Yes. He was as recently as the fall of twenty seventeen governor Baker said he was opposed to this. All right. But now now he's fourth. He's for it. Let's see under Bakersville drivers could not touch electron devices for any purpose other than a single tapper swipe to activate the activate or initiate hands free mode. A first defense would carry a one hundred dollar fine. A second offense to fifty all subsequent offenses five hundred third offence would also trigger an insurance surcharge. See that's. That's the that's the camel's nose under the tent within within two years. The first violation will trigger the insurance surcharge. And of course, that's the that's the that's the gift that keeps on giving kind of like us herpes. It never a an insurance surcharge goes doesn't go away for six or seven years. Baker is in some ways, an unlikely champion for the ban having opposed previous efforts to outlaw a hand held phone use while driving. But now he is expected to speak in support of the Bill at an event being held by the insurance companies. I mean activists I got that. I'm sorry. How how do they mistake activists for insurance companies at the state house on Wednesday? Oh, that's tomorrow. So. This is this is so classic, isn't it? I mean, so now he safely re-elected and he's doing the bidding of the insurance companies here. So they the insurance companies always want another surcharge -able offense and house speaker Bob Delio would always say baker's proposal would be taken under consideration. Official officials in Boston. Cambridge and Somerville believes the current ledge the current wording of the language in the bills makes them illegal because they do not have directional signals. Baker would essentially regulate the scooters is bicycle instead of motorized vehicles, and they would not need blinkers. Does anyone think that's a good idea? Our let's get let's let's be honest. Here aren't bicycles enough of a pain in the ass on roads? Now, you're gonna have scooters. Are you think does anyone think scooters are going to obey the red lights anymore? They're going to be treated like bicycles. Does anyone think scooters are going to obey the laws? They had a meltdown last week after a local theatre company performed Shakespeare review at the town's public high school. Apparently there was way too much secular material like drinking, alcohol, incest and suicide none of which is found in the bible. So like that okay. Also, they're liars, by the way, the local news station was told that the prayer circle was all about the secular material. But apparently, it was about hating gay people. There was a stage kiss between two male cast members. And that's why everyone panicked. They even started a petition to ban any material that would quote, promote homosexuality, incest, suicide or any other sick space that would be contrary to life and quote. Okay. I mean, say what you want about incest, it what if you stop talking, but it is here. It is not contrary to life. Let's just. Just. Let's be fair though, it was suspicious immediately. It never went into the worst air quality. But yeah, it was just a sort of a no brainer. And we, I didn't think I would become into a big business, but we started with one and we learn by doing. We liked it. We went to, we were driving to Bakersfield every week, renovating the apartments and and then renting them out and just liked it. And. Started. We did another one and then another one we did fourteen of he's a little four plex is within the first year with maybe three or four individual investors, friends of family and stuff. So that's how he got started, Keith. I love it. This is something we always talk about on the podcast is that and I are talking about it before we clicked record here is that you don't know what you're doing when you get going, but you just have like do something and then you start to learn. You start to St. and like before you know it, you're owning fourteen places in a year. Yeah, totally. I mean, it's. I try to learn as much as I could from reading and getting my broker's license and meeting with other professionals and trying to get some mentors in the beginning. But at the end of the day, you gotta start somewhere and we started small where you know we couldn't make big mistakes and we built it from wine. Then two, then three. And then after we did these fourteen or fifteen four plex is in two thousand off to it was December eight. We bought the first one all through nine. We bought these four places and then late in the year of, oh, nine. We were approached by a broker who was who saw we were the biggest Byron Bakersville the small properties. He said, look, we got seventy eight unit building. You could buy for three point, nine million, you know, Damian Ireland, Jesus Christ. How are we gonna put together an investment group to buy this? And we at that time we realized what our strengths were and what our weaknesses were. And we said, you know what we need to bring in someone that help could help qualify to get on the loan that could bring the financial statement to do this and to help bring some investors. So. Essentially, I went to my father and then we brought in one other gentleman, we call them the grey hairs someone with wisdom and experience and a balance sheet and between us. And then we brought in like eight investors. We raised one point, three million dollars and we bought that property. We got alone for the rest and we bought it for three point, nine million and put a few hundred thousand dollars in renovations and totally repositioned it. It was an absentee owner that wasn't taking care of it. The rents were below market and we sold it a few years later for six and a half million did a ten thirty one tax free exchange into something else and then sold dad, and just that one invest investment created a lot of wealth for our investors and for us, and it was a real win win. You know, it was a great experience and and it just kept snowballing, went to next building was one hundred twenty-five unit. And then then we went into new markets. We went into Phoenix. The blood was in the streets and Phoenix in two thousand ten during the housing bust and around one hundred thousand illegal. Nls were had to leave because of the immigration Bill. And a lot of apartment communities were reeling, and that's when we found the best opportunity to come in and buy things cheap and just get some great deals and just kept kept growing the business one at a time when we've acquired now around seventy five hundred apartment units and mobile home park sites, and I could get into that later, the mobile home park stuff, but that's been our journey so far. That's so cool. And so it sounds like the thesis is you're looking for value and then you're looking to provide value after you buy these buildings. Is that kind of how it works? Yeah. So we're always looking for the story..

"And that's kind of where I like. I decided like, yeah, now I'm really going to be vocal about it because now you can't tell me shit because now I'm a pro. So what's your excuse now? Like, what more do I have to prove? And then now the the argument that was coming? Yeah. Now the argument is like, yeah, but you can't make it to Olympia like, all right. Watch me. Just watch me give you some time. What's next? That's what's next. And how big is that leap? From what you've accomplished to Olympia? Not much, not much so they changed up the the qualification for Olympia now, but it was previously if you won an overall at an Olympic qualifier which is normally like a big pro show, then you automatically get to go to Olympia like you want I and if you on that. No, I haven't done that yet. But if you get second, third or fourth or fifth, you get a series of points and at the end of the year, the guys with the most points get invited. So now since there's so many guys that are competing again, they went into a point system so you have to compete year round now and place in the top five consistently to get the most points by the end of the year, and they invite the top thirty guys out forty guys to to Olympia. I see. So you're now training for various events and trying to accumulate those points? Yes. Yes. Anchalee. How how far close are you to that? So this year wasn't what I wanted to be. There was a couple things happened between twenty. Seventeen and twenty eighteen. So I moved from Bakersville to Long Beach, California. Basically, I went through this self-awakening house like I can't live here anymore. Like it's capping out. I'm like, limiting. I was in a bad relationship and I need to get out. So I went on a trip to Bali in this had this, like kind of like self aligning moment where I was like, what am I doing? Like only live once? Why am I wasting my time slaving away for something that I'm just not bringing me any happiness for joy. So I went back home, went to my boss's office. I first hand, look, you need to find another place for me in this company or I need some time off to go interview for other companies elsewhere because I just can't do it anymore. He was like, don't quit this offer you in Long Beach. So that of transferring a Long Beach thought that would solve my problems as far as being unhappy with a job because it was a new location. It was close to LA all my friends a lot more to do. I worked there for five months and I was more miserable than ever because now I was garnering a lot more attention on social media and seeing like firsthand. The impact that I was making to the people that I was trying to reach. And I remember I went to an event in London, and I gave a speech in front of, I don't know how many people, five hundred people, something like that. And afterwards, a guy came up to me and said that I helped save his mom's life. And I was like, how's that? And he goes, well, you are the reason that I went vegan and my mom was a type two diabetic. She couldn't get out of the bed and she saw how I was surviving and thriving on a vegan diet. So she was willing to try it. And since she went plant-based, she's able to move around. She like cured a lot of her her illnesses. And I completely think that you helped save your life and brought me to tears still gives me play going now, and I was like, what am I doing? Being like, why am I wasting nine ten hours a day for something that I hate and my technically you're a professional athlete? Yeah. And like I didn't tell anybody at work like in Bakersville people knew at Long Beach. I didn't tell anybody because I didn't want them to know and I was like, so it's kind of like going to this half like go to events in London and give speeches by Eva Lucien. Well, no one was London veg fest that was leading veg fest. So like here I am going to.

That's a good and watch that one bone. Hey, Rachel, thank you for calling. Appreciate that. Thank you and I for tend to watch jersey shore family vacation. "Yeah and it was it was so yeah if you're just tuning in speaking with contemporary composer nikki lease about music censorship and the parents music resource center which you might remember this kind of it was happening a lot in the in the eighties they were trying to get some banned or censored we're gonna talk a little more how that's still kind of pertinent for our daily life but three decades later you're now a renowned contemporary composer why go back three decades and revisit this time because i think it's i'm somebody that is always interested in in history but certainly the history of art history of music and the impact it had and it sort of this kind of era which did bring about the stick ring that still is ongoing it did impact it made an impact on me and i always thought there should be more about this it's i mean look at these characters i watched the senate hearings and and this is drama this is these are characters this happened and this is kind of a thing that you can't you can't even write this kind of stuff i mean people these they they met in nineteen eightyfive and this was number one on their agenda they were sincerely threatened by by music and would spend their their their days debating this you know whether what what should be done about it was it was a huge threat and so bringing this into the now and sort of reflecting on this part of music history and what it means and how it continues and and making sort of reflecting on it that's what i do i of bring things that made an impact on me in the past into the now and and filter it through my my own perspective so this composition you've written is called the filthy fifteen that title comes from a list the parents music resource center published in nineteen eighty five of the fifteen most offensive songs so that includes motley crue acdc judas priest madonna and prince what exactly happens in your piece the piece takes portions of the the senate hearings and essentially creates listening to them for hours you get i get a sense as a writer i get a sense of timbre and potential instrument because what i do as sort of extract instruments from from places that one wouldn't normally expect them in this happened with susan bakersville.
