"While we're seeing Jason Clark, all busted up and possibly unable to fish today. Meanwhile, Matthew, as having a total, existential breakdown like he's drinking rum. He's standing in cornfields talking to his son. Diane sun shows up at of nowhere and says you can hire me for your buddy misses, no go away. Any leaks? From the room of this. Movie Randall kinnisson, Matthew, become a is realizing over the course of all this. I mean, basically told this, by the rules guy, but he's also like realizing like the game will do anything to keep him from killing the bad husband, like the game is actively working against him achieving that goal because it's not in the rules that someone dies in the game. Yes. Which is like, and so, none of this makes sense, though, again, in the context of the twist the movie like why is the game working against the objective of the game in that way? I mean every game is working against you complete the game. But also this positing a world where video game characters when you make it's like the way that when your kid, you imagine the TV is full of tiny people who put on house when you watch video games are full of tiny people who, like have their own lives are walking around doing their own thing, and trying to figure out what they're up to. And it's like I don't I don't I don't understand. Like there's so much metaphysically. I'm saying the movies kind of a mess but. It became clear also that Baker dill, he's like, maybe maybe the members. I don't remember from the war. Maybe that's what's Jonas. And you're like, oh, I see died will find. I want to go back to say, like I think we got sidetracked, but, like the reason that kid shows up. I don't know where sacking I can work on your boat is the game trying to throw an obstacle up because he's like, oh, there's going to be a witness right to the murder if, if I take this kid on. And so, basically, he says yet again, go on kit kid you, but yeah, but clearly like the kid who created the game wants him to kill the guy. He also then supposedly programming in obstacles like what I mean, his desires as, as a kid of an abusive stepdad are fighting his desires as a top notch game developer. Can't make the game too hard. That's never beatable. But you can't make it so easy to beat it in one sitting like it's the challenge this something, I'm trying to explain to my son, and he doesn't get it, 'cause he kid is the importance of the fun of a game is the challenge. And so if you win easily, if you win every time, what's the point of plane, then you're just stuck in, in the place from the twilight zone episode where it's hell because you win all the time that the show, the good place ripped off, basically, the you can't be looking at wanna win all the time. So the kids like I want my dad to die in this game. But I also wanna be recognized as the sugar Miyamoto of my generation was just making the best games ever. So anyway, McConnell. Hey, is drunk and despairing on the beach, and the but never looked better the rules guy. But he looks amazing. Yeah. The rules guy, the fish finder guy comes up to them, and they have this sort of argument discussion between the. The two of them wear like the rules guy kind of disappears for certain two shots of the characters. But is there when like mcconnahey is looking at him? So he's kind of like unreliable presence, but in the scene, but they had this conversation where McConnell. Hey, convinces the rules. Hey, what the creator want the crater is my son and what he wants is for me to kill this abusive guy. And at that point, the rules is like wealth, the craters changed his mind, about things I have to help you like let me inform you to that end that Anne Hathaway has unlikely convinced battered bruised..

"I mean, sometimes you do you do tune it, but, like do you eat, you can eat those guys they're gonna they're gonna catch that big tuna, and they're gonna lack ups, they can put it up over the over the couch and their den scrape out the insides, and eat them first, and then like stuff it or something. I mean I could be wrong. It seems. What? I don't I don't I don't know about that. Are you saying the fish that are on the walls in bars and whatever and sing it, you, they all have guns. The Billy vest. Toronto elements. That was once a live fish before stuff. It's it's like the death of fishes. It's just a it's a it's a cyborg now. So, Dan, so there's he's he takes a lot for sport fishing. But to how this trip go with these two drunk is well, he catches his his dream fish is his bet Noir, fish. He and they're on. What's the name of this famous, too, and other always chasing, but Justice, and he's so so captain Ahab over this tuna that he will not allow these sport fishermen to take over. He's like getting the back and threatens them with a knife. And he, we are introduced idea that Matthew mcconnahey is a little crazy, particularly when it comes to this fish, and in his pursuit of Justice is what you're it's got this the lines. He's got this Fisher the line. He thinks it's all out of fight. He gets John Hahn, sue over to. You know, he's got a big hook. It's gonna hook that thing in and it escapes and met him basically breaks down and Wales at the heavens. Yeah. Does a lot of that in this episode in this movie. He's yelling at the sky also. Because he's so obsessed with this. Tune of these guys don't pay. And he's like we introduced in these scenes to, to important things, but math McConnell. Hey, he wants us to in a and he's so obsessed with two. He doesn't have any money numb, and so what does he do next? Is that when it goes Diane lane? That's what we see we see that guy in the business suit on the beach. Oh, yeah. There's this nerdy business suit guy. He's clearly played a nerd little. Serious-minded fellow in glasses to wait out into the into the water in his suit, for reasons we do not understand as of yet, it's a real. Understand. That aspect of it. Why was he just going out in his full suit into the water is always trying to get to Matthew mcconaughey or Baker dill should say, the suited man is trying to get bigger does attention but he's always just like a few seconds too late. Like as everytime, Baker does boat is leaving the dock this guy runs up like Baker deal Baker Dell. Yeah. When we learned the identity of this, man, we realize wait a minute, that doesn't make any sense late showing up to. Yeah. Wind the tape when I made the Edward 'nigma joke. Can you change it to clock king, because I think it's more. Yeah, it, it just keeps happening in a way that, like halfway through the movie. I say TV just go to his house, and, and the next scene. He just goes to his house, I think house is being charitable, but we can go on. He lives in a giant ship in create like Wally. Stuff. So I think this is speaking of houses he goes to someone's house. Well, so I believe this is the point which he gets into manufacturers fight with his trustees second mate, because he's worried about the fact that he basically pay him anymore, or is that a little bit? I first Bakersville goes to his only source for reliable money in these troubled economic times, Diane lane, a character in this movie that does not pay off in anyone. I mean, she pays off by giving him money. Talk her cat a whole bunch yet. It's weird keeps I met her cat. And I'm like I can't get it. That's that's pets juvenile then she referred..

"Anyway, let's talk about the main course, though. So there are there two sex scenes in this movie. So Jeff unmentioned is three eight three. Okay. Yeah. To Diane lane one within Hatheway. Oh, yeah. That's right. So Madge McConnell has sex in this movie and. Come to find out video game. So everything that happened been created by this kid. So essentially this kid created a video game, where's dad has sex in a lot of detail and not only has sex sex with his mom. Yeah. And he really is role playing as his debt. So he's a sensually controlling his dead. Fucking his mom and also looking old lady. That's like a mini game coop. Yeah. Exactly. That's that's that's what I imagine. That's not cool. That part is very bad. It's shitty movie. I give it a thirty. I don't know if I get my scored, I I was watching the first part of it. And I'm like, I don't know why you guys hated this so much. It's not that bad. Then it hits. You did you say anything out loud to yourself or like what was when the twist hits? What did you think the first time? I think I noticed. Maybe there was some telepathic thoughts. And that wasn't the worst. Because I'm like, okay. There's a little twist little scifi movie. The first thing I really noticed was did you is it just me or did when Anne Hathaway walked into the bar ropes in the movie is called by the way, which is funny because many Mkhize having sex, and he goes to a bar called rope. So let you put that one together and Hathaway's ring glows, I did not notice that. No, something happens. It looks a little surreal. And so my mindset. Says this this is some Trond shit. They're in wreck it Ralph world. I think one of the other things that I noticed that was weird was when stay mentioned how Anne Hathaway in. Matthew, mcconaughey went to high school together? In like, they make an allusion to the fact that he he waited tab sex until she was of age. But like they still mentioned they grew up to with each other. And like there is a pretty significant like eighteen nineteen year age gap between the two the two of them. And like it's pretty apparent out say so that part was weird another thing, and I could be totally wrong on this. But when the at the end of the movie when they're talking about the actual maker to forget, it was names something Marcus just made up yet three different names in this movie. Baker dill the one that they gave him that was like his fake news actual name in the video game within his actual actual real name, which was something else. And they're talking about him on the news. And they're like, yeah. He was killed in Iraq. And he was awarded the purple heart for bravery. Which I don't think that's the purple heart works pretty sure just for getting winded. But I could be wrong on that. But that was another part, right? Groaned audibly one thing we have to admit is that it's highly respectable that Matthew mcconnahey seemingly has no shame. When it comes to choosing his roles. No, none which I respect it. And the fact they tried something different. We'll respect the I will say don't like it. I think it's not a good movie. I respect trying something different Richard Roeper gave it pretty high. Mark back. Really? He said it was like dick Roper to dick ropes. They had a bar code ropes. He said Moore is it one of the most ambitious one of the most challenging one of the most entertaining thrillers in recent years. I don't agree but hunt. Annihilation was ambitious in chess. Okay. Like if we're going for February March releases like that or shoved right there annihilation was surreal movie. It was a very confusing movie. But it was a very good one. And I respect this movie for going for it..

Very charming them breaks, the news to him that he was right shouldn't married. This this abusive asshole of a man that she did in that. She's she's being tormented by him. And and her son and his son is being tormented by him guys. Here's where I thought the movie was gonna take us. She proposes to give him ten million dollars to get Baker dill ten million dollars ten million dollars to take this man out fish, fishing, expedition, murder his ass. Now, some important points. They broke up got divorced because he went to Iraq in combat came back and said he wasn't the same person. Okay. So just store that one away. So takes out on this fishing, expedition one day, this guy and guys I don't know if you thought this. But this was the most over the top asshole character I've ever seen. They made it a point to get the big baseball bat of obviousness out and just beat us over the head. He was basically Cole Cole Hauser's character from need for speed. You know, the one that was like with even Mendez's undercover for that was basically him. He was he was like an an R rated version of will our nets character from hot rod. Yes. Exactly. Perfect. Hey, babe, grabs. Dose anyway. So it takes about the fishing trip. Get sauced up talks about some some gross shit comes back. Matthew, gone. Hey now starting to click in his brain. Maybe I gotta take this guy out goes back to Anne Hathaway talks to her says, I'm gonna take this guy out. Meanwhile, we've had interspersing segments of Matthew mcconaughey telepathically communicating with his kid programming at a computer terminal programming. What we don't know yet. He's talking to his kid telepathically at one point Matthew mcconnahey jumps off a cliff, by the way, the cameras rotating around them like a video game at this point. Like, he goes to the cliff, and it's doing these swishes to side to side it jumps off the cliff and has its complete underwater type psychic conversation with the sun. And that's the moment, we know that this isn't a straightforward murder mystery movie, what has been maybe fifty or sixty of a movie is now at twenty five thirty. Yeah. That fucking weird camera technique that three sixty zoom feel like they probably did it like ten times like throughout the movie just random in the ad like a swish sound effect. And like that point. I was right with you around like this something weird that's going to happen. A new twist coming but I can tell you didn't see the twists that was coming yet. But you might have drew. No, I didn't see it. So what forgot to mention? This is the weirdest part of the whole movie. We follow this weirdest. And he's he's on this this island with the suit with the briefcase, and he's desperately trying to talk to to good friend Baker dill. Nah, this conversation at his house, which turns the entire movie upside down when you said note, the time on this because this is maybe two thirds to the movie more around the halfway point. Absolutely. If that, and this is huge because when you put a twist to a movie when you place it that is so important and this was again at maximum two-thirds through. All right, Jeff now, this is where I need Jeff to take over the move before. Because I cannot do it. I don't know. I know what happened. But I cannot explain it. "And there's something really kind of hopeless, and and despairing about that that I don't think the movie really explores enough per what you said HD and his his name is Baker dill. Because he had a teacher whose name was Dylan Baker. So he decided to create his dad in a video game perfectly to the point where the dead. Didn't know he wasn't real but rename his dad. After his teacher. But for some reason to the words backwards. So the his dad wouldn't know he was his dad. Yeah. All right. I think that's going to bring us the end of the review, Jeff any other questions you have. But he could talk to his dad, and he sometimes did. But not enough to like actually wanna hang out with his dad e created your dad in the video game. You could just hang out with your dad that you miss will. They do actually. "We have talked about how some movies have been great video game movies with they're not actually based on video games very hardcore game be. But it's not it's not like, assassins creed. It's not basically that lived. I repeat therapy gravy to get movie. Monje? Welcome to the jungle. Very good. Yes. Great example, HD is serenity a great video game movie. Jeff serenity is a video game movie made. I someone who's never played a video game. I've said. It's it's like, they don't have the most basic understanding of how video games operates. So the reason you're saying that we we so we should we should say that again spoiler for this entire movie, the basic premise of the story of the movie is that this guy named Baker dill, right? Play by math McConnell. Is approached he's trying to catch a fish called Justice. He's living on this island called Plymouth island. He's trying to catch a fish called Justice. And then his wife his ex wife and halfway comes to meet them and says, hey, my new husband. That's not you Bakersville beats me and my son horribly, and we need you to murder. My husband. Thinking about on your boat on your side. Get them drunk throw them over the side. We need you to murder him. So that you know, me, and my my son can be free, and maybe we'll be all be together again and your son my son annual on your son. This is the same. And and so everything's like kind of like in this heightened reality, right? Like people are talking in over the top way, the island is kind of weird it's gonna just nondescript place, you don't know where it's located and then moles, and he's he thinks he, you know, people say talk cryptically, and there's symbols that are sort of represent his chase for this fish. And it's it's like a dream fugu state kind of. Yes. A couple of other things that are like everyone on the island seems to know everything that happens on the island. Right. So that's kind of interesting, which I thought actually was kind of a cool. It was cool was pretty another movie where there's there's an island where everybody knows everything. I think that's kind of a cool premise tool setting the first half of this movie plays nothing like. A video game because it plays more like a hard boiled pulp novel from the forties. And if that was the reveal I would totally make sense to me, it's like memoirs sit on a beach, right? Yeah. Exactly. But this reveal the snow sense from what is leads up to it. So we should also mentioned by the way that Matthew mcconaughey, the bigger dill character. He sometimes runs out of money and a woman played by Diane lane pays him for six. Right, right. Because he's he's he's down on his luck. This woman pays him for six. So all this fucked up stuff as a Kurd during the course, this movie already and about forty five minutes into the movie. It it is dropped Jeremy strong. He plays. His guy who is like trying to supply Matthew mcconnahey with a fish finder. And he accidentally reveals that. Oh, by the way, everyone here is an video game. That's been programmed by this kid who's kind of methane become a has a real life counterpart and his son in real life that is program video game that they're all living in right, right? And I guess the reveal at the end is that he died in Iraq. Yes. As a soldier and the kid made this video game to reconnect with his dad created an AI Sosa fisticuffs. Did that it was actually his dad in the video game? Yes. And then I I want to step through the logic of this movie because it's it makes no goddamn center in the world. Okay. So he's somehow created a virtual version of his father that is. Unaware that he's in a video game. Yup. Right. Puts his father in on an island and fishing because he has a genuine memory of he and his father trying to fish one time. And it's a good memory. So he decided to make his father fishermen with USA for right in real life. He has a stepfather who is abusive to he and his mother so somehow playing the game is going to get him the courage to actually do something in defend his mother by murdering the stepfather because if he makes his virtual dad do it in the game somehow that gives him the courage to do it in real life..

"And there's something really kind of hopeless, and and despairing about that that I don't think the movie really explores enough per what you said HD. And his his name is Baker dill because he had a teacher whose name was Dylan Baker. So he decided to create his dad in a video game perfectly to the point where the dead. Didn't know he wasn't real but rename his dad. After his teacher. But for some reason to the words backwards us. So the his dad wouldn't know he was his dad. Yeah. All right. I think that's going to bring us the end of the review. Jeff any other questions you have for he could talk to his dad, and he sometimes did but not enough to like actually want to hang out with his dad e created your dad in the video game. You could just hang out with your dad that you miss will. They do actually. They do actually gain that ability at the end of the film, Jeff. So because it all works decided it's okay now to do that after the murder and his father. Yeah, he decided merges father. He decided he was going to escape his reality and live in this perfect video game world, which until then was the rotting health scape. It's like, I mean, forgive me. "WGN? We're live in the AllState skyline studio here until five AM. It is Monday morning that means my dad's gonna call in and tell a joke because it's jokey joke joke guitar, and we're back Eric is off. He's in the Sundance film festival, and we wanna thank him for giving us exclusive reviews of some of the movies debut in there, and we're back here. Jim Lewis Kaczynski is with us. And let's get Jim back on the air. Hey, jim. How's it going? All right. Why don't you tell us about serenity? Boy. All right. Well, this is movie I'm excited talked about also weary of talking about him and do my best to. So it's gonna be it's gonna be really hard to talk about this one. I mean just in terms of. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What we have here is that people aren't aware. It's actually a sequel to interstellar because we have Matthew mcconaughey and Anne Hathaway. No, actually this. It's it's funny. Because like the trailer sells us as a modern day war something like, I know Eric described it last week is currently does late nineties or at school. Palmetto? To some degree something. It was advertised a wall simple favor. And that's what you're kinda getting here at the beginning of the movie opens with this overhead shot of fishing boat in the middle of these this, pristine blue ocean. The boat belongs to a rugged stubborn man named Baker dill played by matching Matana, hey here. And while he's out with to tourists and as first mate Duke played by the Domon hunt SU he gets he gets. A massive tuna fish that he's been chasing. He wants that tuna so bad even gave it a name Justice. And then, you know, we sort of get to know this town that Baker resides in Plymouth, and it's a talented sort of recalls like the swampy, Florida Keys, but feel even more isolated from society. He's been on the run from his past suffering post traumatic stress can service in kind of an unnamed war as well as drinking all night at the local watering hole. He. Just sorta dwells in this environment, and you know, doesn't really he's really immersed into his job. And then the boat, of course, the tuna fish that he really needs the cat kit cat named Justice. But he also occasionally romances a neighbor named Constance played by Diane lane who in return for some affection gives them a few bucks. If he's ever hard up for cash and the final piece in this. No, our jigsaw is offensive towel named Karen played by an Hathaway and essentially the high school sweethearts from his past roles into town with her abusive rich husband Frank played by Jason Clark. And of course, she has a very pro provocative proposition. If Baker takes Frank out fishing pushes him overboard Elision to die. She will get a million dollars. No questions asked. The rest of the film hinges on. Well, will he do it is she on the level with him? Are they still in love? And there's also an interesting subplots that we keep cutting to involving bakers teenage son who has been isolated and kinda missing his father and southern sun might have some other connection. That's best left upset. And honestly, that's about all I can say about this plot. It really starts out as a typical Noir thriller, like I mentioned, and there are a lot of character scattered throughout the town that seemed to know a lot about baker's plans and his plight. There's this mysterious character that keeps popping with a briefcase. Let me also play a role in all of this. And the thing is. Opinion on this without going into greater detail because it does have some twists and turns. And all I can say is that the reviews for this movie? I haven't been really harsh and saying it's preposterous idiotic and somebody. Of time night Shamlan with the direction at sort of decides to go into and calling it laughably bad for me personally. I would say that this movie is pretty laughable and aims for way too much. But I also I didn't hate the experience of watching this play out. I mean about an hour in some audience members in my theater sort of jumps ship, no pun intended. I felt like they kind of just gave up, but I I will say that I'm a fan of the screen. I I'm a fan of the clause. Obviously, a place to see and Hasselblad. Matthew, mcconaughey and together? The the thing is about the material though, is that it takes it self to seriously to some extent, I think if if they would've let Matana, hey, sort of get a little more bad crap bonkers in this kind of more like a Hammy away to bring a little camp into the whole thing. I think it would made it even more entertaining. But for some reason, it didn't think this was always the time. Because it goes in the direction, I didn't expect at all. And I liked the feeling of not knowing where film it's gonna take me. Is it a complete success and not in the slightest I very flawed, but it's also just weird being? Existential thriller that I guess ten jumps the shark but not in an uninteresting away. I wish I definitely wish it had more flair and style like the Palmer movie because it could be something along the lines of the talent that wanted to be, but it's not up to that level again. Yeah. This is a crazy crazy movie. It's completely nuts. And I it was not at all. When I expected it to be. And it does take it does take a couple of twists to the point where I mean, I can I can understand why people are laughing during this movie because it it just gets completely absurd. And and but yet it's played so straightly, you know, what I mean like, I mean, really straight, and it I don't think the material deserves to be played that straight. Matthew, mcconaughey and Anne Hathaway, I love both of them. I think they're both terrific, and they're kind of fun to watch and this. But just this movie goes off the rails. An entertaining way. Yeah. No. I didn't. I didn't. I hate the experience of watching it. But I can't recommend anybody else. Go and see it because it just really does. I mean, it goes nuts. This is a movie that goes nuts. And it's hard to talk about without giving anything away for people who want to see I don't wanna ruin the experience. But let's just say it isn't experience. Yes. Absolutely. And experienced so. Yeah. But I can't recommend it. It's hard. And again, as you know, Jim, this is a very difficult movie to talk about because you know, to get into why I had a certain reaction to it would would mean that I would have to give away details that I don't want to give away. Yeah. Serenity not recommended and it's crazy. Jim hang on. When we come back. We'll jump into the underrated eighties movies real quick. And do a little bit of that before. We let you. Go sounds good. Okay. Journalist is with us. And there you go. All right. We'll say Brighton we come back. We're going to talk about underrated eighties movies. A gym put a list together of those. And we will talk about that. After we get back from the break seven twenty WGN, Chicago voters.

"Ryan Fuji, tiny rotten tomatoes dot com about the new movies out. Hey, ryan. Hey, guys. How's it going going? Well, what about the movies this week? Is this mcconaughey movie any good? That's gonna be a really difficult one to answer. I will tell you right up the bat that critics are not loving it. It does not have a high tomato meter. However, I think it might still be worth watching. Here's why. So this is essentially it's called it's called serenity. It's essentially a Neil war or it. It starts out that way. Anyway. Reunites. Matthew, mcconaughey with Anne Hathaway? They both coasts are together in Christopher Nolan's. Sci fi film interstellar in this one. The he plays a down on his luck sort of charter boat, captain on a remote island. His name is Baker dill, which is an incredible name. By the way, he hasn't seen his ex wife or a teenage son for some time until she shows up out of the blue one day and asks Baker to help her dispose of her abusive new husband by taking him out on a fishing trip and feeding him to the sharks. That's the gist of the initial narrative of the film, but I will say it takes a few turns that are absolutely bonkers. Critic hadn't taken too kindly to that. So it's at twenty one percent right now, largely because of all the weirdness in the script and performances, which I think to be fair, I think we're kind of intentional. I don't want to give anything away. But if I'm being real, honest serenity is one of those movies that I think most people would be hard pressed to say is actually a good movie. But the things that tries to pull off are so incredibly ballsy that they almost have to be seen to be believed. You may think you know, what's going on as you're watching it. But believe me, you don't. So it's a it's a bizarre misfire. But I think it's an ambitious one. And if you do go to see it, I would say bring some friends and try to watch it with a big audience if you can. Wow. I don't know yet. There's ever been a movie that low on the tomato meter that. I want to see because of what you just said. I want to reiterate he may not come out of a thinking that was worth my time. But you know, it's an interesting idea. I will say that the whole premise the setup is really interesting. Goes husband feed, the sharks. Yes. Okay. So that's serenity. And then there's the kid who would be king. Yeah. This one actually is doing really well. This is a repurposing of the legends of king. Arthur set in present day. England follows a twelve year old named Alex who's played by Andy circuses, son. Louis Ashburn circus. He seemed like an ordinary kid or so he thinks until one day he stumbled upon mythical sword in the stone in an abandoned construction site pulls the sword out triggers a series of events, including the appearance of Merlin who is played by Patrick Stewart in his original form, but spent a good portion of the movie in teenage body played by Angus in order to sit in he enrolled in Alex's school and convinces he has to take up this fight against king Arthur's old nemesis. A sorceress named Morgan who was also been awakened. Yes. Critics really like this one so far. I think it's at eighty four eighty five percent on the tomato meter. It's a brisk adventure. It's got lots of humor some impressive set pieces that are just fun to watch. I think kids in particular. We'll get a kick out of some of the sort of wishful film and fantasy that's on display. It's definitely got the sort of five of those Steven Spielberg Amblin entertainment movies of the nineteen eighties. Which isn't too surprising because it was written and directed by a guy named Joe Cornish. Who made a great movie back in two thousand eleven called attack the block, which if you're familiar with it it also had kind of a similar Spielberg invite? One criticism. Some critics have about this is that at around two hours. It feels a little bit overlong for a kids movie. It's rated PG, but it should keep the kids entertained enough. And I think the hope is that it might become something like the goonies for a new generation, and it certainly feels that way. So I think it's worth a watch. If you want to take your kids to something this weekend. Boy, the escapism with everything else going on kind of sounds good. That sounds like a good idea. Anything else out this week? You want to mention. Really really quickly. I will mention that. There was a film that opened in limited release at the end of last year called STAN and Ollie, which is a kind of a film industry. Bio pic of the comedy duo, laurel and hardy were played by Steve Coogan, and John C Reilly. It follows the two of them late in their career at begin a music hall tour and simultaneously tried to get one of the last films off the ground. It's a great heartwarming film with really terrific performances from both Steve Coogan and John C Reilly. It's a nice glimpse into the old show biz world it was certified fresh at ninety one percent when it opened and it's now expanding into more theaters this week. So people who might have had an interest in seeing it. We'll finally get the chance. Oh, that's cool. And real quick anything else you've seen. Whether it's a streaming anything else that you like you're like, hey, you should check this out. Maybe not. Yeah, difficult. No, actually, I've I've been kind of we've been kinda busy with award season past couple of weeks. So I have not had a chance to watch anything new. Unfortunately, Jake, that's one of the things. There was a story out. Just how much people will binge. You know when a series comes on they'll actually miss work the next day, they stay or they'll stay up all night. It's just to me. So ask you that. They did drop on Netflix. The Ted Bundy tapes, I think is what it's called right. It's about those. And I I watched the first episode last night. It is definitely something. That's captivating. I have not gotten around to seeing that. But you know, it should be it should be noted that there is also a film opening at Sundance which started yesterday Sundance film festival that stars Zach Ephron has Ted Bundy, and it's about his life from the perspective of his wife or his girlfriend. I forget which and that's supposed to be really interesting. I don't know if you can picture Zach Ted Bundy. But there you oh last week, right? You mentioned fire fest. There's one on Hulu, and there's one on Netflix. I did see you want to Netflix. Yes. That's right. It's fascinating. It is right. Yes. Yes. It's just a snapshot of the culture we live in and, you know, the influencers on Instagram and how they could build this thing that they could just never fulfil and the rate all crashed down. It's just it's really interesting to watch. So I appreciate their recommendation. Right. And you know, if you want to check out the one on Hulu that one is called fire fraud, and that one actually features interviews with the guy who put the whole thing together, which to Netflix one did not have. Yeah. Oh, you know, the other thing they actually had this. I think it was on the today show today, which man that was nauseating to watch that whole thing. But there was a snippet about Sundance and the Michael Jackson movie that's going to be shown they have to have extra security. Because of the blowback because this is a whole lot of people like that were boys affected by Michael Jackson. And they don't want that side of the story told right so, but no one had seen it. And so they're going to be showing it, and then I'm sure the stores will be flooding all over this weekend. So we'll be looking for that as well. "You mentioned black mirror, and this does remind me a black mayor because as I said on this podcast. I feel like much of the Piel black mirror to me is discovering. What the episode is about like you start watching it starts off normally. And then once it clicks in like, oh, this is what it is. That's what is kind of fascinating about black mirror to me. Like once you get the the concept like if this was an episode of black mirror, would it be one one of the bad episodes? Or would it be an enjoyable Mets of a good episode? Like, what would it be a ladder? It's definitely more enjoyable messy than it is well done. But I I don't know. I feel like if it was a black mirror episode the film's grasp technology. You would be would be better because I'm not sure Stephen Knight has ever played a video game based on like the way that he builds this movie, and the sort of antics that. Baker dill gets into it does feel like a fictional, alternate reality, but not a video game reality. Like, I wonder how this characters having so much sex with like Diane Lane's a Komono wearing mistress in a game. That's that looks more like a retro eighties fishing game than anything. So I'm just like, I don't know. What game he's been playing the director Steven night. Like, the only time I've ever seen a fission gaming is like like one of those like southern bars kind of thing. Like, yeah. I don't know. This kind of reminds me of did you ever see the John August, film the nines? Now, I haven't note John August for those who don't know is screenwriter of go Charlie's angels big fish, Franken weenie. He's a big screen in Hollywood any actually has a podcast that I listen to love he in two thousand seven. Made a film called the nines which premiered at Sundance and actually it was way ahead of its time. Because it started Ryan Reynolds. Hope Davis Melissa McCarthy in L fanning. So a head like a great cast of people that were are now, very popular. Like, you know, l l fanning was unknown most McCarthy this is before she hit it big Ryan Reynolds was not dead pool at the time. So like, you know, these were all before they were big people and the film. Centers around three men all played by Ryan Reynolds who are trying to uncover secret about the strange happenings in there in in their in his in their their lives. And you know, I'm not going to spoil that movie here because I actually very much enjoyed it. But it's and it isn't a video game. So it isn't like, you know, you can connect the dots. But I think it's inspired parl personally by video games in John guesses. His experiences in like, M, O's and stuff got. So I would I would recommend if this sounds appealing to you. Maybe check out the nines each day because I I really liked that film. I wonder how it holds up. I haven't seen in a decade. But this this sounds the sounds trillion sane like, I don't even. Should I waste by AMC a list to go go see this or should I just wait until it's on my TV? I read. I mean, you're not wasting your aim stateless. Did you get three movies a week? Yeah. I think this is an AMC eight list movie. So it's just about like is it worth my time going to the theater, and I think so. It was definitely surprised to me. I mean, I'm not sure how it will play for you. Now that you do know the twists, and I feel like because I did say that I feel like the majority of my experience of it was just from being blown away by the Swiss. But it does have like this campy heightened experienced to it and very stylish direct to'real flare by Stephen night that is a little bit much. Sometimes it's very over the top that it kit. It is enjoyable in. That sense. I saw someone on on Twitter, Matt Donahue finances..

"Like, what do we actually recommend people? Go see this, actually. I deal Jeff, the sheer audacity of this harebrained bonkers twist that flips this movie on its head and turns into something that is just like a juggernaut of a fascinating film. I can't express how much this twist like made me sit back at my seat. And I can't in good faith say that it's a good movie. The it's you know, it can be divided into two very disparate films that take place on both sides of the twist a neither of those films are very good. But just the sheer emission. It's so brazen. I can't help admire it. Okay. So there you go you have had proper warning. We're now going to spoil serenity so HT walk us through it. What happens in in? This twist. All right. So about two thirds of the way through the film Baker dill is a encounters a businessman played by Jeremy strong who has been trying to reach him the entire film, and the businessmen essentially reveals that Baker dill is a character in a video game that is being played by his son and his son is tampering with and rewriting the coach this video game to play out his fantasies of killing a digital version of his abusive stepfather. Wrote this in our slack channel. And we were all like your fucking with us. Right. Like, we didn't even believe that this could be real yet. No, this is real. This is a real movie that went through studio in stars to Oscar winners. So. I don't even know where to begin here. Like, I what were you like how does it deal this out? Like, I is this in one big wallop. Or is it like stretched out like your what kind of wondering who is this person? Like, I don't even in one big wallop like they do plant some some seeds and some foreshadowing throughout the film. But it really does not prepare you for the reveal basically what happens is that Jeremy strong businessman whose name read Miller tries to approach Baker dill and tell him don't kill the abusive husband. And he's like, how do you know, I'm going to kill him. And he says essentially something along the lines of I am the rules. And it turns out. I am the rules. I enrolled that's line of dialogue from this newbie review the rules and turns out Miller is the manifestation of the game fighting back against the code that the kid is inputting into like turn this very mundane fishing game into a murder game. So are we supposed to care about programmed characters that don't exist in reality? I mean. You don't care for them. Even when you think they're real cares. But is just it's just so Jackie. 'cause know Baker dill than has a whole existential crisis about free will he launches a little bit in to his true detective persona where he's like, do we really, you know, decide anything and the other characters all NPC's are like what are you talking about? And like, very cheery, and it suddenly becomes kind of Truman show ask and an an honest kind of like a black at an episode of black mirror, but somehow way more insane. And yeah, there's just the he tries to end up going through with the plot to kill the stepfather. And the NBC is try to get in his way at one point NPC played by jump Jim on Hans oh higher of gangsters to break. The hands of the husbands. He can't go on the fishing trip. Like, what is the movie?.

"Like, yeah, we already went through all that. Heartbreak. Totally is this enough to get you to come back and movie baths cancelled too. And I wonder I think movie pass still has that weird policy where they don't let you sign back up for a year with the same Email address, it it's kind of like that boyfriend is like if you break up with me it's over we're not going to get back together. You know that the movie passes doing right? Exactly. So it feels like even if you wanna go back for the limited plan. You can't if you already cancelled. So they need to get rid of that policy. That's just ridiculous. And it looks like Chris is ride to the airport is here. He has to leave us Chris. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. Yes. I will. I'm off to Sundance. Okay. We'll hear from you. There. Hope you see some great films and hookah airp- airplane experiences. Not too painful for you. All right. Thank you. Okay. Now onto the spoiler room. We usually don't do this until after a movie has been out for a weekend by really feel like this is a movie that no one is going to see I know plans on seeing this until you started telling me the spoilers. So. First of all each t tell me, what is this movie, you know, without telling me any spoilers before we're not getting into spoilers to Seattle. So if you don't have to tune out just yet tell me what what is this movie in? What did you think about it without getting into suppose? All right. So this movie is called serenity. It's a narrow north roller. Starring Matthew, mcconaughey and Anne Hathaway and Matthew mcconaughey stars as a fishing boat, captain on this fictional, fishing island, called Baker dill, and he's a has a chip on his shoulder and a traumatic past that gets resurfaced when his ex wife played by an halfway comes to him and asked him to kill her husband who has been abusing him a abusing her as well as her and Baker dill's young, son. And so mathematics. Donna hay is torn about this. And he the premise of the film, essentially is a will he kill this abusive alcoholic husband played by Jason Clark. And that's what you think that this movie will be assorted CD Neo Noir with Anne Hathaway as the fem towel and some vast conspiracy coming in. But there are there's something we'll off about this movie. A not only is strange the heightened and very arch their supernatural elements of start trickling in that McCue that's pleasing to plant the seeds for it harboring some sort of greater twists which will get to later and everything you said it's been kind of hinted at in the trailers and stuff. So that it's not like you're spoiling anything other than the fact that there is a twist. I guess yeah. Yeah. And this is a crazy twist. So that I think that this is a trashy through high budget lifetime movie about assorted romance and a a murder plot. But it turns out that something much more. I feel like I feel like there's no way for you to give your opinion on this movie without discussing this Wailers that crack really they've really is not I was really struggling over writing this review because ninety nine percent of my enjoyment of this film hinged on the twists that happens. Two thirds of the way through the movie and basically just had me with spring. The fuck the time the your review says that the move the thriller doesn't just jump the shark. If vault in somersaults over it, it's pretty sane in this film. I had no interest in seeing not even a film that I had an interest in seeing when it hits net flicks later on in till? I read in our selection, all you talking about the spoilers from this film. So that said we're gonna we're going to begin to talk spoilers for serenity, if you don't want to know them, and you just want to go in blind..
