Mexico wants American extradited on charges in tourist death

"Prosecutors in Mexico are pushing for the extradition of an American woman suspected in the death of one of her traveling companions. Mexican prosecutors have not named the woman they filed charges against, but a video that has been widely circulating on social media shows Robinson of Charlotte, North Carolina, being beaten by another woman, a man with an American accent can be heard asking Robinson, can you at least fight back Robinson says no. The group Robinson was traveling with left Mexico after she was found dead October 29th in a villa they had been renting, and autopsy revealed that Robinson died of a severe spinal cord or neck injury. Prosecutors in the state of Baja, California Sur, say they've approached Mexican federal prosecutors and diplomats to try to get the woman extradited to face charges in Mexico and a warrant has been issued for her arrest. "Co host Carol master traveling for work this week but we do want to talk about leisure right now For that I'm joined by Bloomberg pursuits deputy editor Jim daddy Also travel editor Nikki eckstein they're here with us to help build a perfect itinerary for our summer vacations Yes there's still time to do that Jim I want to start with you though Why are we listening to mellow yellow Mellow yellow has a prominent role in one of the stories this week Summer travel season is upon us And we're all feeling a little bit sensory deprived And so Nikki came up with this really great idea about how to reinvigorate your senses So we picked 5 the 5 senses And found itineraries for each one where you can kind of engage those senses and get back in touch with them Nikki what were you thinking whenever you were had this Wide world of travel and how to engage your senses You know we always think about travel in terms of a destination for us right Where am I going This year it feels a little bit like people don't care where they're going They want to go anywhere and they want to feel something And I think in comparison to how we were traveling in 2021 we were still a little bit conscious of COVID We were still social distancing And I just remember going to the Caribbean and seeing the bluest water I thought I had ever seen in my whole entire life because my eyes have not laid You know I hadn't laid eyes on that color And so long but touch the sound of people close by all of those other senses were still far in the background And this year I think we can really flood our senses And in a less restrained way and that's what we were going for here Yeah I remember going to the Caribbean as well And the sun on my skin just felt a little bit warmer You didn't get to touch any whales though Did not touch any I want to talk a little bit about that Nikki because I think this was such a great way to approach the travel section in the pursuit section for the magazine And I want to start with that sense of touch You found an area of the world where people can travel to not so easily It turns out And make contact with whales Yeah so you think about Baja California in Mexico and you think about Cabo This is a part of that state granted cabos and Baja California sure This is regular Baja California just north of that And there's a bay with four sheltered lagoons in Baja California It's called laguna San Ignacio And there is an operator called Baja expeditions that runs the only luxury leaning trips to this area getting there is a little bit of a schlep But once you arrive you stay in sort of like a plush safari camp kind of a situation And you go out on these boat rides where you can visit gray whales These are huge animals They grow up to almost a 100,000 pounds each They're enormous and you're on tiny little boats and what do you do you splash in the water to draw their attention and they come right up to you and they introduce you to their babies who are born in these lagoons learning how to swim and you can interact with them and you can physically touch them They give you permission to touch them which is pretty unprecedented in terms of wildlife encounters and ethical wildlife encounters Nikki the writers Sarah Clemens has a really funny image Describing what it's like to touch one of these whales These are huge animals as you mentioned but how did she describe it It's a little bit like touching a hard boiled egg Tim you ever petted a hard boiled egg But a two ton puppy at that She has a very very funny way of writing And she also really struggles with this idea of cutting wild animals because it's something that we as travel writers usually are telling people not to do So how is this okay Nicky It's okay because the whales are interacting on their own terms There are a lot of restrictions put into place on tourism There are only 16 tiny little boats allowed into an approved viewing area at any one time which is very few people the whales it's that their discretion whether they come up to you or not Nothing is being done to feed them to entice them And all of the interactions are completely on their terms Interestingly enough whales are very sensory animals We kind of coming back to this idea of the 5 senses They communicate via touch which I did not know The babies roll all over their moms to signal that they're ready to nurse They touch one another to talk So this is something that they like to do I want to talk about sight the next sense that you cover in this Nicky And I think for anyone who saw HBO's white lotus this will be a familiar image But forgotten Polynesian art of voyaging or wayfinding for that we go to Hawaii tell us about it Yes so we really wanted to do something surprising with each sentence We didn't want to give you the classic blue water in the Caribbean because we've all been there and done that as I have already Established right But what about seeing at night What about seeing the dark That's what our writer Jen Murphy did when she learned how to read the stars in order to steer her outrigger canoe in Maui which is the sport that she'd been pursuing for fitness And when she realized that there was this kind of forgotten cultural aspect lurking beneath the surface of this thing that she'd been doing to work out She got really interested in it and started learning and ended up training with a master Voyager Who teaches her about reading the stars and reading the wave like fingerprints in the ocean And it is poetic and lyrical and beautiful to think about how nature sends all of these visual funds our way that we take for granted And she stops taking them for granted in this teeth and teaching us a little bit about what we can be looking for Yeah that was what was interesting to me about this story You think of going to Maui and it's like a feast for the eyes kind of thing This sort of stereotypical travel writing kind of thing Nikki but one of the things that was really impressive to me about this is that it feels very relevant to average people like myself who may not have the best sense of direction.

Like you've had like this complete trip you shared and you were so grateful to have gotten to have this wonderful experience and i had a moment then as well. This is like a rose for me too. Because what i do like my job now to create experiences for people. I have not been able to do that for one time. And when you said that. I'm gonna tear up again i cried. I actually cried at dinner the other night. Because i realized that without even trying like i had done a and brought people together and here we were three of us. I mean a smaller group than normal but three people that we only know because of travel together at a table sharing moments and that is what i now create any. Sergio was like you've done a good job at staying white. Well we stephen burns. I'm pretty proud of myself. Actually so Yeah after that afternoon was the when we took our paddleboard so after lunch that day we loaded paddleboard onto the boat and went a few days over to extensively a very small mangrove forest. We have no idea where like. Where are we going to return. There's a channel behind that goes in. Have to know where you're going from out there and so we could only go in with paddleboarding basically single or like kayaks tax or something but we had. It's so kayak so narrow it. We had to be single file. You're still like you could have easily you couldn't. I don't think at some point you could have fully reached your arms out. Yeah for sure you had to like pull in the huddle onto an a great blue. Heron took flight right in front of me and flew right down that narrow little town that was really cool or fish everywhere trumpet. Fish like skinny. ones Yeah we had that lagoon to ourselves because it's not on a map. Yeah actually it's you know it's there yeah can't find. It was super special peaceful. Yeah it was really really just lovely and that was that was. That was the next day we also did paddleboarding in the morning owner. Hey which was talk. There was a coral reef. Sal rays stingrays I saw a snake. A water snia starfish. A king angel fish. Those the black line. What's the spiky bar fish. There's a place there called rod Roma rather roma had an amazing chili relleno. Like with stuffed with pescarolo like fish so delicious. One of my favorite chilly that i've had so far so besides hiding there's really not a whole lot draw i think donna going on outside of that and after we were there we went up to loretto. And you guys might know that. I spent a season there The in december january february of two thousand sixteen seventeen and so that plays definitely a special me I haven't been back since i lived there. "Takata if you have one perhaps a piece or model or any light beer that you can pretend as mexicans throw line minute so garber if you'd like to join us Maybe close your eyes. Not if you're driving of course but listen to the birds. Imagine relaxing on a cushioned lounge chair on a stone built patio next to an it was actually infinity pool amidst a garden of bougainvillaea and a guy. Cactus and birds singing from the trees You get the occasional visit from the house cats and dogs and there are a little bungalow cassia scattered up and down the hill from you as you overlook the pacific ocean because yes sometimes adventure travel means oceanside infinity pools. And we're not sad about that and if you like what you hear in this episode as in you want to see yourself doing these adventures definitely stay tuned to the end. Because i have a special gift just for my listeners and you will find that at the end of the road so for now. Let's go back to the pool. Okay so I i wanted to talk about like basically let's start at the beginning and Talk about the kind of airport experience Of course there are things that are different now. Like wearing masks. And then as you're transitioning there are Like san hand sanitizer and like things like that in a lot of especially here in mexico they have. I would say actually they have. I mean at the beginning of like every at the entrance to every single store Restaurant especially restaurant. You can't just take yourself in you. Stop an oftentimes. They're even cordoned off. They have like a belt or something in the way they will invite you in only after they take your temperature and watch you gel on your hands. And that's just how they do it here. Masks are everywhere. Even outside food stalls would have hand sanitizer available. I mean even if it wasn't a restaurant yeah See how we definitely saw that starting in the airport really. Although i thought it was really funny that when you come into kabo you after you pick your begging you go through after you go through immigration when you go into customs on the way out. They still make. Everybody pushed the damn button the button. I'm like well not so funny. It's the random selector button Which basically what that means is it's it well. As far as we know. I'm doing air quotes. Its randomized whether it turns greener red and like just lets you buy an. It's supposed to be like a random selectors search and then if you turn red then they'll like go through your bag and stuff but anyway.

"Has been dealing with drought conditions for years, and that's had a big impact on the Colorado River basin. The region's been looking warily. The reservoirs along this long river that winds its way from Colorado's Rocky Mountains, all the way to Mexico, just shy of the Gulf of California. Water levels have been getting lower and lower in for the first time ever. A shortage seems almost certain. This is prompting a lot of people that ask what's going to happen next. Joining me to shed a little bit more light on this is Luke Runyon. He's a reporter at K. U. N. C, based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Luke covers the Colorado River Basin. Welcome back to Science Friday. Luke. Yeah, happy to be here. So So, Colorado is obviously the name of this water system. But for people who don't know the Colorado River, maybe just give us a little geography lesson. What states? What Tribal nations. Does this cut through? So seven U. S States make up the Colorado River Basin, and it's split into two watersheds. So the upper watershed you have the headwater states those Air Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Utah. The lower basin is made up of Arizona, Nevada and California. The river also crosses over the US Mexico border and two Mexican states, Baja California and Sonora. They both used water from the Colorado River. There is also 29 federally recognized tribes in the basin, of which 10 of those tribes hold a significant amount of water rights from the river on that group includes the Navajo Nation, the Southern Ute tribe that could chon Indian tribe. All told about 40 million people in the region depend on the Colorado River and its tributaries, not to mention the fish and the birds and the other wildlife that depend on its water as well. Yes. So a lot of people a lot of wildlife in many, many jurisdictions to give us an idea if you would just how low the supply is in the basins, reservoirs right now. Sure, So much of the attention in the basin goes towards the river's largest reservoirs, which also happened to be the biggest reservoirs in the entire United States. And that's Lake Powell in southern Utah and Lake Mead, which is on the Nevada Arizona border near Las Vegas. They're already low because the entire watershed has been experiencing above average temperatures and below average river flows since the year 2000. And there's already a supply demand imbalance on the Colorado River, and the supply is shrinking faster than officials are able to shrink the demands that we have on the river. On that's left Lake Powell at 34% of its capacity by the end of the summer, it's projected to be even lower at 29% of its capacity, which is a record low. And Lake Mead is currently at 37% capacity. It's also headed toward a record low later this year. So it's not just the reservoirs, though, where you see these dramatic pictures of just how low the water is. It's also in the ground water something that you can't see. Explain that a little bit forest looking just how Dire. The situation is for the groundwater in the region. Yes, so this is something that is harder for us to visualize because you know we're so used to looking at reservoirs and rivers, and you're able to say, oh, the river's higher The river is low. You can't do that with groundwater, but it plays a huge role in the Colorado River Basin. This year because things have been so dry. I know. Some of the states in the Colorado River watershed have have had the driest year on record over the last year. And that's left the soil incredibly parched. And so when you have snow that's melting off. It gets soaked up into the ground before it flows into a river or flows into a reservoir. And that sponge is very dry right now, and it's sucking up all of that water before it can be used as water supply. So, you know, with so many stories like this, we say this is probably due to climate change. So, Luke, I don't know. Is this all just because of climate change? Yeah, This is a question that has been of intense interest to climate scientists. There's an increasing body of work that I would say, puts climate changes fingerprints on this mega drought on that's a word that you're hearing a lot. Maura's mega drought, not just this temporary state of drought. Um, And there is some evidence that this dry period would have happened without our greenhouse gas emissions. But the warming temperatures that we're seeing make it considerably worse than it would have been. And really what we're seeing in the basin is that warming of just a couple degrees has the potential to completely upend how the water cycle functions in the Southwest. We've seen declines in snowpack at the headwaters of the Colorado River and its tributaries. We've seen record set when it comes to dwindling soil moisture. We've seen evaporation increase from reservoirs and streams at higher temperatures. And as we warm even further, it makes it that much harder for our infrastructure or water storage to recover. When you use the term mega drought that sounds like a newer term. What about the idea of a water shortage? I said at the top that we don't have an official water shortage. What would constitute that? So in the Colorado River Basin. A lot of the management of the river is tied to the level of its two largest reservoirs. So when Lake Mead declines, certain policy triggers are put in place. And right now people are watching the level of Lake Mead very intensely because when it dips below critical threshold People have to start taking less water from the river, and those cutbacks are spelled out in agreements that the states and the federal government have put together in order to manage some of that decline. That's really what we're watching right now is how low is Lake Mead gonna go? And what does that mean for the user's on the river? Well, given all these users, all these various jurisdictions are there competitions for what water is remaining, and what sort of disputes are coming to the forefront Because of this? Well. Arizona is in the line for the steepest cuts from the Colorado River, and that's because some of these past agreements have put That state in the in the most vulnerable position for cutbacks, and most of those cutbacks are going to fall on the central Arizona project system. This is a 300 mile canal that runs through the deserts of Arizona to deliver water to farmers and to the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. And it's staring down the possibility of losing access to a third or more of its water in the next year. And you know that's way beyond any sort of voluntary conservation that Arizona has done up until this point, And you know those air cutbacks that users are actually going to feel and that Municipal leaders farmers tribal users in Arizona are having to plan for right now. How are the tribes preparing differently Maybe than the states are Well, this is kind of ah narrative or story line in the basin that has gotten a lot more attention recently is. How have tribal users been excluded from agreements.

You've got to get in touch with this guy. You just have to. This is wonderful. And so I thought about it, and I thought well, Huh? How am I going to get in touch with him? This was latitude and longitude. So I Googled it. I found there was sort of a circle right around the Right around Baja California, the coast. No. I knew that how he had a dental degree, so that was kind of a clue. I figured, OK. There was a Off resort somewhere within that latitude and longitude. So I called this golf resort and their toll free number. And I said Was there a doctor a registered there? No, there wasn't And I figured, okay, that circle could include the coast of Hot California. So I figured how he's on a cruise ship. So I found a cruise ship tracking site on Google..

Would be speaking in a theater surrounded by hundreds of San Diegans who care deeply about our city. Tonight. I'm addressing you from the empty sand you see drove Branch library in one of the neighborhoods hardest hit by Cove in 19. This is the newest library in our system. It also happens to be one of the busiest. It is just one freeway exit from the US Mexico border, and it was built on ER how cultures merge in our mega region. Sanya seizure residents advocated for years for our library to reflect the character of their neighborhood. The design the art The fact that nearly every sign here is in English and Spanish is a testament to what we can build together when we work together. During the pandemic. This library had to close its doors, but it didn't stop service. We opened an outdoor lab for people to access WiFi and made it easy for patrons to pick up books they reserved online. City employees stepped up and got creative to get the job done. This library. What it means to this community is a symbol of who we should be as a city. It's a beautiful reminder of the importance of investing in traditionally underserved neighborhoods and proof of community perseverance during this pandemic. Also a reminder that far too long this community has been ignored. Prejudice and systemic racism have long held back the promise of America. Last week, we saw just how much progress still needs to be made. Violence that the capital and protests across the country are stark reminder that there are those who seek to undermine our democracy and sew discord. We need to unite now, more than ever has covert 19 continues to spread. No one can escape its impact. This past year, my partner and my father lost their jobs. My nieces and nephew have been struggling to keep focused on their education. Haven't held my mother in months. It is not lost upon me that compared to so many other San Diegans. I'm one of the lucky ones. Some of us have been isolated for close to a year. Some don't know how they're going to make ends meet. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. Kids can't go to school. Our neighbors are dying. Even civic institutions like our city have not been spared. Pandemic has exacerbated longstanding city budget problems. The last administration did too little to address Behind the ribbon cuttings and news conferences, the city faced structural budget deficits. I've inherited a budget deficit that exceeds $150 million and will require difficult decisions to preserve neighborhood services. That hole in our budget is greater than what it takes to run our parks and recreation Department for year. It means that we're left with fewer resource is to fix our crumbling streets, city facilities and storm water systems. Due to the years long neglect of our infrastructure. It will cost nearly $6 billion just to meet our needs. We have no real idea how much devastation, climate change and coastal erosion will cost in the coming years. All of this is underscored by the fact that our city's workforce morale has been battered because they're overworked, underpaid and underappreciated. Honestly. State of our city is fragile right now. Have faith that it won't be for much longer. See at the core. Our city is strong because San Diegans are strong. We are resilient. We are fighters. We recognize that we are all connected. Even when we are apart. Together. I believe that we can and will solve the biggest problems of our time. We will lift each other up and create a future that is better for all of us. For the city. To accomplish this goal. We must first recognize that our battle with covert 19 is far from over. We keep shattering single day records for cases and deaths. Lost. Some call for things to go back to normal as soon as possible. It is clear that we cannot This is why it was important for me to take a different approach. My first executive order was to protect our hospital system and save lives. We need to hold accountable. Those who choose to blatantly and egregiously defy public health orders. The arrival of vaccines has given great hope. But the reality.

Who would replace Kamala Harris as California Senator?

"We still have 12 weeks before the November election, Voters will decide between President Trump on my vice President Mike Pence against former Vice President Joe Biden and current Democratic vice presidential nominee California Senator Kamala Harris. But in Harris are victorious. Governor Newsome will have to appoint a new senator to serve the next two years here in California, and well, there's been early speculation on names like State Attorney General Javier Becerra and San Diego State Senator Toni Atkins. Another elected officials told the governor he's interested. Mayor of Imperial Beach Search, the DEA sent a note to the governor with a picture of him in a business suit with a surfboard and water, nothing his intention to seek the appointments If the Democrats win because Pamela Harris may become our next vice president, I notified Governor Newsome like everyone does not is via Twitter that I'd like to be on the collection left to be the next U. S. Senator put out Open seat. And I think it's important to have someone who's not from the insider circle in Sacramento on someone that's ready to help clean up California and fight for our planet and our ocean from day one. Well and yes, I think it was the announcement that color base attention picture of you in a business suit with your surfboard. Right. The water's edge. Kind of embodying what it means to be from Imperial Beach. Yeah, you know, and you're a bitch, maybe small. What? We're mighty, You know, I've seen the names of some of the more high profile candidates and you know the reality of California's in trouble countries in trouble, And so we need someone who's used to doing things without a lot of resource is gonna support. You could get things done quickly, and that's experience. I've had thereby be in that experience that we need for the next senator from California and as the native Senate, California someone who rested 500 California the lifeguard for the state and for the city of Baby, I'm ready for the job and just look forward to being considered by Governor Newsome. Well, obviously you've worked with the governor, and in fact, you've worked as high as going to the White House when it comes to the sewage issue along the border, with the issues coming out of Mexico to impact San Diego County Imperial Beach, the city of San Diego. Everywhere else here with its impact that profile of yours with that fight has gone to the highest level. Yeah, so you know, unfortunately, because sewage issue is continuing to happen. I ve had to reach out from everybody from the president of Mexico, too. You know, President Trump We've met Got Governor knew someone. The governor of Baja California. So yeah, felt the times were like more like an international diplomat rather than a mare. But that is good practice good experience for what it takes to be an effective senator. To give you credit. Since the minute she was in office, she has support our first queen of the border. She's put a lot of attention on period Beach. In fact, her California director came to Imperial Beach to visit her stop is in very involved in this issue, so she's been great on the tissue as well as Senator Feinstein, but it's time for a new direction and and that's what I'm putting My My name in the hat or handed the ring And you know there is a perception out there at some points where you know, San Diego geographically being where it is. So we feel that the state of times may forget about us or things like that. You know, putting San Diego right back up there and kind of raising our hand and saying, Hey, what about us? Yeah, you know, Right now we have two senators from Northern California from the Bay area, So obviously we need a lot more Southern California repetition and the fact that Southern California needs a lot of help. We've seen that during this covert Christ of some of the highest rates, obviously in the country in Southern California, especially here in South San Diego and along the border, So we're in trouble have the highest rate of unemployment in the state along the borderlands question. Imperial County so We're in trouble. We need to get someone to replace Senator Harris. She gets elected vice president who's fighting for California and every California and not just the ones who can write campaign checks, right? I think that's important to make sure that someone who works for every California In every corner of state and every family and put families and kids first for California

Dave Bautista, Keita And Makita discussed on The Frame

"They were coming out a week after Spiderman far from home and a week before lion king I mean could we have like one shot at it. You know that weekend doesn't go well for gone forever. That's not Camille Janis only problem. It is new movie stupor. He plays an uber driver who picks up a nightmare passenger. Who's got a gun? That's Today on the frame weekend. Plus for filmmaker Lewan diverse casting is key even if it surprises surprises movie goers type of American lead that we're used to but that's part of it you know people need to get used to these faces as being part of the faces of America re talk too long about her new movie the farewell and we'll say hello to the LUBEC sister's piano duo from Paris who wowed the crowd at the Hollywood bowl this week. It's the frame weekend from the Broadcast Center at K._P._C._C. John Horn stay with us. I'm John Horn and this is the frame weekend on this show we talked with creative people about how and why they do what they do and about how their art is shaped by the wider world a little later today. We're going to find out why Tuesday nights are taking off in downtown L. as little Tokyo but I this you know there's a sense that certain movies theatre movies and certain movies are not theater movies. I think comedy's our theater movies to Oh. Actor and screenwriter male Nanjiani hopes that audiences agree he's going for big laughs and his new dark comedy. It's called Stupor the film just open this weekend. It's an action packed buddy cop flick with with a twist Nanjiani stars as an uber driver and he picks up a total nightmare of a passenger and out of control policeman played by Dave Bautista. He's losing his eyesight and he's got a gun. AFTER JANIS 2017 seventeen breakout film the big sick he was looking for an entirely different kind of role for a follow up so when he came across the script for Stupor he thought he'd found one as long as he could help tweak the script a bit genuine motto of the L._A.. L._A.. Times was my co host for the frames recent summer movie special and Nanjiani was one of our guests we started out by asking him to explain the premise. That's driving the stupor storyline. An Uber driver gets kidnapped by a COP and forced go on an adventure to catch a murderous drug dealer and the cop can't see because he just got leasing just got Leszek. That's the thing I don't know why it's not in the trailers. The cop just got laid sick and so there's like over the course of the whole movie. He's got this chart that he's staring at waiting for it to get on blurry so I'm curious how this came about. Were you looking for something like this. After the big sick I sort of had a little bit of paralysis about what to do next ext so I decided that the only way I wouldn't put too much pressure on myself was to do something completely different that nobody could compare it to the big sick right and so I kind of was I want to do like a big studio action comedy type movie so then descript came in and I read it and I thought it was really fun and funny by was like if I want to do like an action comedy with guns and all this stuff there has to be a reason for it to exist like it conscious be that it's entertaining and so I actually talked to to Fox a bunch about it and was like hey. I think there's some like underlying themes in this movie that I think we should really bring up to the surface and if you guys are willing to do that then I think this could be a cool thing to do. We'd be able to talk about things you don't normally see in like a big action movie like this. That seems like such a guy movie toxic masculinity in men talking about their feeling exactly exactly I was like if we're doing a movie in twenty nineteen about out angry dudes with guns. We have to talk about that. I feel like we're obviously in a narrow where you know. Masculinity is under the microscope and we're really sort of figuring out. Most of the world's problems come from men who can't feel their feelings so it was like I think this is a great rate way to talk about that stuff in a movie. That's traditionally a very like man movie and for people who don't know what's tuber means what does to remain Camille so my character's name is Stu and Driving Uber so my boss calls Me Stupor to make doc fund me and it really gets under by skin cancel. It affects my rating icon trouble for stars lose this job. ooh Do right now that that you for this stupid you can stop calling me that he really loves you. I think that's it's a really fun too because we were like let's take all the male types and reconstructive so this guy is sort of the you know the petty tyrant type of guy and we do a scene where we deconstruct that where he's just like kind of lonely and feels bad and insecure about himself on you have a whole seen in a male strip club. Yes exactly Steve. How is the name of the guy that I talked to a bunch and it's funny? He's like Hillary Clinton Tattoo. She was up twelve points in August. We just wanted to take a a bunch of different types of men and sort of deconstruct. All of the stripper is talking about being honest with your feelings and you know not hiding. You need to tell her you feel a relationship cannot thrive without honest and you know he's been body shamed by his his boss for being like you know one percent body fat as opposed to point five right right. He looks great by the way I'll tell you I felt very inadequate in that locker room because it's like Ted of the most gorgeous hunks and then me like I notice I watched this movie a bunch of different audiences. My posture is so much worse in that scene than any other scene in the movie the match up of you and Dave Batista his persona has his outward appearance appearance like it it lends itself to a deeper deconstruction along those lines. That's what's interesting about him is that he looks like such a brute. You know he's so big and he's looks like a scary guy but he's the sweetest most sincere man have truly ever met he he is completely in touch with his emotions. In a way are characters in the movie are Kinda swapped. He's the one who's really comfortable being sincere and crying and really talking about his feelings whereas I was the one who was really cut off for myself for a long time and in the last four or five years I've been sort of trying to do the work of getting in touch with my feelings and feeling comfortable expressing something other than anger anger you know what is that about. I mean is that about things that you think you can do. Through acting where you can start understanding yourself better yeah I mean honestly was I started taking acting classes like a year before the big sick because I knew that had got to be able to access parts of myself that hadn't been able to access an taking acting classes. It's Kinda was like therapy. I realized that for years I didn't know how I was feeling why was angry about stuff and so in doing doing acting work for the big sick I realized like Oh. There's a lot of stuff going on inside me that I thought was not good to feel and so after the big continued doing that work on myself like I cry it almost every movie movie now and I went like fifteen years without crying at all. When this movie came along? I was like well. I think this could be an interesting way to talk about some of the things that I've had to deal with on my own when I was sort of talking to Fox about this. I don't want to take credit for this movie in any way. All that stuff was in there but I was like I see these characters as one needs to get angry and one needs to cry. So how do you do that and make what is a summer movie with like you know. I won't say car chases but there's some car action. There's a ton of violence. There's a lot of like what we would see in a big action movie. How do you make sure that that is responsible as well that you're not just kind of random? gunplay people are just getting mowed down because that's what you have to do a summer movie I mean. That's tricky right. That's tricky so it is a shooting movie. It is people with guns. It is it is car chases. Those things happen in movie and that's the language of this type of cinema but I but I was like my cocker should be anti doc. I was very adamant. I was like fire. Hold a gun in this movie. I don't want to feel cool or good about it. The only time I fire is once into the air when we went to do the poster shoot for the movie. The concept was both of us holding guns and I was like I'm not going to hold a gun. That's completely not what this character is so I'm honestly not trying to take a big stand against guns or anything. Obviously you see I think gun control is very important but you know Dave has a lot of guns and he's a very responsible gun owner and he's very comfortable around guns. I'm not comfortable around counts I wanted. I thought that that perspective should be in their drive. I'm sue how do you do can get you some bottled waters and Canadian chocolate. It was one of those things where I thought was getting five bars Amazon but I ended Koreatown no rea- town now hold on. I'm going to bang a UEY Hero Quick Doc. No don't got it. It's clear that uber was a willing participant in this movie I mean they are all over the film and yet they're these jokes about the driver like Oh my God he took the right turn. It's now four minutes two minutes. How much freedom did you have to actually make fun of ride? Sharing Services and Uber particular first of all did not pay us any money for those people think this is like an ATF ruber. I'd be like this is a terrible herbal admiral the driver get kidnapped. How is this a positive thing for Uber? They wanted to make sure that the APP was used correctly. That was there. They wanted to make sure that that technically everything we were doing in the movie would have happened that way in real life they weren't too concerned about US making fun of Uber like they were kind of cool with that but they wanted to make sure that it was an accurate portrayal Nanjiani co stars in Stupor with Dave Bautista. It's in theaters now. You're listening to the frame weekend. I'm John. Do you know what if Akita is no well. A lot of people don't and a lot of future generations won't because it's almost extinct the vikings are a casualty of fishing nets in the Sea of Cortes off Baja California. The Nets are there to capture another species of marine marine animal the Totowa by the Documentary Sea of shadows examines not only the rapid eradication of Akita but also the nearly intractable plight of local fishermen. We sat down with the film's director Richard Laud Connie at at the Sundance Film Festival where see shadows premiered and he started by telling us more about this small porpoise like mammal. The Makita is the smallest waylon earth. It looks like it's very cute. It looks like a cross between a pond the baron dolphin there's so few left after them so the first mammal that may go extinct in a decade when we started there were less than thirty left now. We believe there's less than fifteen left so they're really declining fast but DEV akitas just a symbol for a much bigger story which is that the drug cartels tells the Mexican cartels in a Chinese mafia based in Tijuana are attacking this habitat of the Makita because they're looking for something else that cocaine of the C- the Toba and they liked that so much because the swim bladder ladder of this fish can fetch up to one hundred thousand dollars in China so they discovered it as an alternative to the drug trade so this is why story so big and dangerous because they're attacking a notion that Jacques Cousteau called the aquarium of the world and they are destroying it just to get this swim ladder and nobody was looking like when we did the IRA game the elephant crisis was known and it was a big deal and you know everyone loves elephants. This one was a silent war that no one knew about but it was so deadly because tens and hundreds of thousands of animals being killed in slaughtered and I was five hour south of Los Angeles Richard when I think about the challenges in making this movie obviously the first one is the by Keita. They're very few they're hard to find and there's certainly hard to document and then you're working in an area where there are people who don't want you to document what's happening and they don't want you interfering in their business and those people are powerful and they have guns so what were the biggest challenges is for you in trying to document what was going on outside of San Filippo. The Beach Chattan starts with that. Do you need a lot of money to make a film like that because Justice Security that goes into keeping us all safe because every day that we spend there we were noticed more and more and we try to pretend to be like a natural history kind of film team just doing a film on wildlife right but they were wondering why are they on the sea shepherd ship which is fighting the cartels house and why are they so interested in what's going on here so yes. It became the most dangerous film I've ever done. I set that as well. When did the every game they started sending us more clear messages that they do know who we are and especially the really bad guy? <hes> Oscar Para started to <hes>. Let us know by sending us a messenger saying. Why don't you interview me but we were like Oh? We're not going to do that because he had actually just murdered soldier in some Philippa a few weeks back caught on videotape too caught on videotape and we thought it could be a trap. There's a moment in the film where you were filming. If I keep that is in distress and to watch what is happening to this Keita's your cameras are rolling and the marine biologists who are trying to care for it is unbelievably difficult to watch because this is an animal. That's not only almost extinct it is in some ways kind of anthropomorphic and it's a it's an animal that has almost kind of human qualities in its face. Can you talk about without revealing what happens in the scene what was like to film that sequence where you see this Keita who is struggling to stay alive you know it took five weeks of us being out there on fifteen boats with ninety scientists who we're the best in the world to try to find them. You know for us. It was this journey this rollercoaster ride of emotions of being with a scientists looking for this animal which they wanted to rescue they wanted to extract all of Akitas and put them into a safe zone so they can stay alive because the thousands of ghost nets were going into catch to our killing everything they're like walls of death but yeah being close to that Makita that after five weeks was caught was was incredible. It was the first time Akita was even filmed like we were the first film team ever ever to film this animal in its entirety that was like Oh my God but then also watching it struggle with captivity that was emotional like you cannot believe it was tears of joy I to actually sleep find one bring it to safety but then also watching how it was struggling it was <hes> big rollercoaster for US emotionally direct KITA. There's maybe a dozen of them left. What would you say to people who say what differences the Fakih to make to the world? You know <hes> we have a responsibility I think to care into not look away and this story is remarkable because it is a small story but it's a small story that you find over and over again across the world. I want everyone to start looking at this and say like this can't happen like I can't allow this. I'm angry. I want to inspire especially the young people like our our hero Jack Drawn to these twenty one and he's risking his life every day and he's out there facing poachers and he's I angry and he's not ready to accept so he's fighting and to show here is like that I think it is very inspiring and empowering for young people who I think do
