The bainbridge island school district is now working with an independent investigator to look into the circumstances that let staff to call police when a special need to students left ordway elementary school and walk next door to this church. "Interested in spending more time with them. So I joined their troop and loved it so much. I just kept going back. That was a while ago. I've been involved for a decade now. I started in second grade. Today, the 18 year old bainbridge island resident is preparing to leave the girl scouts, but not before addressing what she considers the most important work of her scouting career. And I know she'll get your attention because it has to do with those delicious girl scout cookies. A friend of mine highlighted that palm oil was in the recipe. And at the time I didn't know, but over spring break, I started researching, which was a year ago, and then over the summer, I finished that piece and it was picked up by miss magazine. According to a United Nations report, 1.5 million Indonesian children worked to produce palm oil instead of going to school. The girl scouts condemned this back in 2021, but the cookies still contain palm oil. Palm oil is a vegetable oil, which means it can be replaced by other oils. There are no alternatives that are cheaper, however. And that could be why the adults in charge won't budge. I reached out to the girl scouts and was referred to the roundtable on sustainable palm oil, a group that works alongside the scouts to get its palm oil from ethical and sustainable sources. But because of those sources, it's not a 100% guarantee. The industry is vastly unregulated. Why not eliminate all doubt and dump palm oil altogether? A girl scout cookie product manager once told CBS News, quote, our bakers don't believe there's a viable alternative to the taste or the quality. It's an interesting statement because palm oil wasn't introduced to the thin mint recipe until 2006. Simone, you're not the first girls count to call out palm oil. For me, there was Rihanna Compton, Madison boy. She and her troop decided to not sell cookies this past year. Several other troops didn't sell either out of protest. They used the voice the scouts helped nurture. And I'm optimistic that the girl scouts as a platform will listen because they're so girl oriented and palm oil undermines what girl scouts is all about. Brian Calvert, northwest news radio. "And Brian Calvert. What can you tell us Luke? So what we know from the Secret Service which released a report mass tax in the United States from 2016 to 2020 is studied 173 attacks in the U.S., what we know is that 75% of them were carried out with a gun, oftentimes illegally or illegally acquired by the attacker. Their red flags given by the attacker in most cases, whether it be concerning post online or concerning behavior that they exhibited just before the attack. And finally, we also know that the attackers have personal grievances towards at least 50% of the places that they attack. So whether it be that they leave somebody who worked at a business or the business person with them a church, house of worship, et cetera, 50% of those were personal to the attacker. Luke and so many of these incidents, the gunmen ends up dead themselves. How were they able to compile this information? How were they able to put all of this together? So a lot of times the Secret Service will go back after an attack or the FBI will go back after an attack and do what's called a behavioral analysis. And so the interview family members who interview friends all under the auspices of research of course, if the suspect is dead, there's nothing to prosecute with the attacker. So they'll often times go back and do research about what was that person saying or what was that person posting or what was that person doing in the days, months, weeks prior to the attack. You mentioned most of the attackers used guns. Do they have them legally? So that's the interesting thing is that the secret services that the guns were often acquired illegally at one third of the attackers, they say were prohibited by federal law from purchasing or possessing a gun, including those prior felony or domestic violence convictions. That's what's been going on. Intermittently earlier today too, so I'm seeing a small backup start to form there. You should be getting through here shortly. Some routine cleaning on the agate pass bridge is affecting traffic on both directions of highway three O 5, getting to and from bainbridge island, especially heading east or southbound out of the poles, but areas very heavy right now. Good afternoon and silver that rose are moving pretty good, but we have a heavy police response in very inches west of the 5 18 5 O 9 interchange on first avenue south at one 48th street, so I'm definitely seeing some extra delays on the surface streets around there. It is another day of routine maintenance on the egg at past bridge, which is causing some delays on highway three O 5, especially headed east or southbound onto bainbridge island right now. We have some intermittent maintenance happening on north down 99 at the first avenue south bridge today, and right now the traffic is moving okay in both directions across it. Again, like I said, things have been pretty well on both directions of I 5 into and out of Seattle, no major delays around Bellevue, some slight crowding and Renton on north on four or 5 around Talbot road. It doesn't last too long though, but it was still in good shape on I 5 around Tacoma, Olympia, and Everett. However, insulting, I'm seeing a bit of traffic build on eastbound highway two approaching this man road near this guy coma sugar and if you are headed across those mountain passes, traction tires are advised over Stevens and other white, but no restrictions of personal call me or fluid pass right now. "Radio telling you F L A Pitch 6 52, and we're joined now by James Judge, The CEO, a judge, public relations and James is out to save the The Coast Guard cutter. I think it's pronounced a dak. But to make it part of a museum here in Saint Petersburg. This thing was commissioned in 1989. But on September 11th The cutter, aided an evacuation efforts and transported first responders and established security zone to prevent further attacks. But basically it has a very rich history here as part of 9, 11 and James, I don't understand why the president and the government Wants to send it to Indonesia. Oh, thanks, Jack. Katie in here in the morning for having for having me. I appreciate it. Um, I don't understand a lot of things that our government does. Uh, this one is probably one of the more bone headed moves that I've seen. You're as you mentioned the coast Recovery attack has an extremely rich history. Not only did it help coordinate and oversee the largest rescue in world history when half a million people were evacuated from lower Manhattan on 9 11. A day that, you know, tragic day that our nation will never forget. Hopefully, um, and also captured some of the very first enemy prisoners of war in Iraq when we a Nair force 81 30 gunship on the night of shock and awe. Blasted in Iraqi patrol boat was the crew, the Coast Guard Cutter eight act. It did save the Iraqi crew out of the water and then took them prisoner, turning them over to coalition forces. Um, it also is down here in Florida and Florida Straits and 94 during the Cuban mass exodus. When somebody Cubans were trying to escape communism and come to the United States of America that in that pursuit of freedom, this cutter has an extremely rich history. And I think it's absolutely worth shaving. Um you know, our our mission is to bring it back here I formed of the Coast Guard Cutter eight action. Historical society, and we want to bring it back here making into a 9 11 memorial museum and even the training platform for use. Yeah, we don't have a lot of time here to save it. James and I want to get your initiative here in a second. But do we know how much what the dollar value is on the sale of this thing or what? They're attempting to get for this. I don't know. I'll tell you this. The Coast Guard cutter Bainbridge Island, which was another 110 ft Coast Guard cutter was sold at GSD auction for about $150,000. I don't know what the attack is going for. But you know if it's anything like the Daimler Jar, which is the same exact style cutter for the price of a Tesla, we could potentially, you know, save Ah national treasure. That is a no 9 11 artifacts, historic relics, So I don't think it's about the money. I mean, that's not what they're doing. This is about a political favor. In Indonesia. That's where they want to send the cutter. But here's my point. We have five other 110 ft patrol boats that are all being decommissioned over in the king of Bahrain, where this cutter is currently based, out of any one of those congealed in its place. Or there are several other 110 ft cutters here in the United States that could go over to The kingdom of Bahrain. Looks like the Department of State just doesn't want to deal with bringing it back to United States. However, you know, we've got some congressmen that have jumped onboard three congressmen. So far. We expect more this week. That air trying tol puss in our efforts to save the cutter, so Big Thank you to Congressman Gospel. Arrakis, who, you know, initiated that effort. Then Charlie Crist, who also jumped on and sign that letter on has been supporting Bill Arrakis and our efforts on that. And then Congressman Lee's album Zoning out of New York is also helping One quick thing. Where would it be A ZPA wrote of a museum effort here in ST Petersburg. Where would we have a just down by the waterfront or near the pier? Well, there were actually three potential locations we had discussed with clear water. It was a possibility of ST Pierre's. We're looking at the area by the pier down by actually, it's in the port area. I think it's currently there's a building leased by USF, but we were looking over back there by Coast Guard sector ST Petersburg, which is actually a historic to air base. Um, we may have put it there and maybe one USS leases up Look, at least in that building and building was actually designed as a museum. We might turn into a larger, you know, life stating Coast Guard and Armed Forces Museum. On then, you know, potentially if that didn't work out, Although ST Pete has expressed some interest, and we've been talking with some city officials, they're, um they're looking at it. They can make that happen or not, and I think we can. The other possibility would even be camp with waterfront area of Tampa. We already have the you know us on this American victory there, and we would love the partner with them. We've even discussed partnering with them and potentially, you know, having some sort of joint effort there on the waterfront in Tampa. Well, this is great your effort to keep it here, and I'm certainly hope it works out successfully because this would be a great thing to have in the Tampa Bay area. James Judge CEO, A judge public relations Thanks for joining us on a M Tampa Bay and we'll stay in touch..

Bainbridge Artisan's Resource Network

"Hey everybody in this second part of our discussion about barn. The bainbridge artisans resource network in Bainbridge Washington. We are talking with Mike. Morgan the Woodshop Studio, lead the Woodshop at barn is simply amazing and is open to anyone to us. We will hear about the operations of the woodworking studio as well as a bit about the history of the studio itself mic. Thank you so much for joining me and welcomed. Its would thank you, Daniel. It's a pleasure to be here now. How long have you been? Working here at Barnes since its inception, which goes back more than two years now, and prior to that I was part of the woodworkers group that formed spontaneously on Bainbridge island back in two thousand nine, so I've been at this for more than ten years now. but barn is relatively recent. Yeah, and then we are just so people get a geographic sense Bainbridge. Island is up on the sound in Washington the puget sound. It's absolutely beautiful here. My. Best friend and I kinda toured around a little bit on the island and we've been here before he. He used to live up this area and it's just gorgeous, and do you find that? That this community or this island kind of draws. Artists. Yes very definitely, so my wife and I lived before here on Mercer Island which is on the other side of puget sound, and it's a wealthy bedroom community, not dissimilar from this one, but no artists community at all. Yeah, and so this is very different in that sense really attracts artists, artists, artists ends of all types and. It's also true that people liked living here. And I've actually been told there are people who want to move to Bainbridge island so that they can join barn now. That's a little more than I'm quite ready to believe, but maybe it's true. Yeah, I mean just touring around the little that we dead. There are some ridiculous resources here you WanNa take us through a little bit of that I. Know We're going to talk a lot about the woodworking. But what else can people do here on Bainbridge? Barn Yeah. There are depending on how you count eleven or twelve different studios ranging from the writers group. You know they just have a little room where they sit there and learn how to write. But, they bring in the most impressive array of professional authors. I've ever seen so the other day. I heard that Jay Gaunt's is giving a five hour shop. In the writer's studio, which to me I'm Jay is one of my favorite authors like J P Beaumont a lot. So I was blown away by that. That's want just one studio. We have kitchen arts as they call it. Produces lots of good things to eat, and it's a commercial kitchen in the sense that caterers can rent it. Do they share yes, when they're up there cooking. And every once in a while, we'll make something them. woodworkers made all the cabinetry for example in the room. They used to serve their bigger meals, and they reward us with a couple of plates, cookies or something good to on during the day as you were. Touring the around the woodshop. You were showing me the cabinet tree that you guys built and it's. I don't want to call it over the top for a woodshop. But it's beautiful there. They're all matched doors or veneer. Is it veneer or is it solid? It's all it's all near Oh. Okay, and you said you made upwards of four hundred of these things for the entire barn. As we've lost count so many it's at least four hundred in the early on when the building was still being finished off, we stepped forward to volunteer to make these cabinets for Barnes so that they save tens of thousands of dollars with that effort, but in return the organization. was very much willing to buy us some nice power tools, so we got some excellent. You truly amazing. We do tools out in that Shaba, but the other benefit. If I might interrupt. That is to that we all learn. We were all rookies when it came to building cabinets so in the course of this, I learned how to make euro style cabinets.

Carolyn Goodwin - Marketing Manager at Barn

"In a nutshell. What Is Barn? Well Barn is a is a community. It's basically it's an artisan community formed of artisans from all different disciplines who have come together and initially worked to create this space and now work to. Invite people into it to learn and make things now. You have a number of primary studios. Here I. Believe Ten. What are those. Well, we have everything from electronic and technical arts where we have three D. printers and laser cutters and laser editors and a lot of people who know what to do with them. and we also have fiber arts where we do weaving and knitting and sewing. Glass Arts where they do Stained glass and mosaics and Fused glass we've jewelry and fine metals where we do all different aspects of jewelry, making from the Lapidary or stone cutting work to the working with to gold and silver and other metals We have a kitchen arts. We have a commercial kitchen here, so we have a group of people who put on classes on on kick cooking, all different kinds of cooking from all over the world we have print and book arts where we have a professional quality, prince, making equipment, and also teach bookbinding and book arts. And we have a writers group where we can teach people both the craft, and the business of writing and then finally last, but not least we have. The the woodworking studio which is has been incredibly popular and and is just always full of people making things whether woodworking studio is what brought me here, initially It's kind of my thing, but I've been so impressed with the you guys offer is is just amazing now. How did this place come about? Well it. Ta started in about two thousand twelve where. Initially. It was a woodworker who had an idea to that he'd seen a community woodshop shop in Arizona think and thought wow, that would be a great thing to have on Bainbridge island. And you know he worked on it. And then was looking around for a existing space on the island to do that in and in the process, other people kind of started thinking well. What if we did that, but we also added a print studio, and maybe we did that and had a jewelry studio, and the more the more people that. kind of joined in the more traction that idea got and eventually. It morphed from looking for a space that existed that we could put this into to. You know if we're GONNA do this right. We just need to build the space from scratch and so. So that's where it went and it actually all kind of came in the idea gelled in a famous. Band tour there were a group of about. eight or ten people that were in a van on a trip to go look at another artists space in the area and on that trip the whole thing came together. It was kind of like well, you know. Let's just build it and they came up with the name you know. Let's call it barn and they came up with You know really the whole this I. Guess I. Unfortunately I wasn't on that trip, but apparently it was just incredibly exciting time for where where everything just kind of gelled and from there. We we went into the. The Next phase which is building the building. Yeah and I mean it's it. There's a big step between this would be really cool to actually breaking ground, and and it's just everybody I've talked to this whole. I don't know if I. DO SHOULD I call it an institute or just a this Space Barn? was seems to be such a Labor of love. You know everybody's passionate about what they're doing. It met a lot of the other instructors or the studios yet, and but it's all. It looks like you're doing it right well, it. It's It's brought together just an incredible group of people from the very beginning, it was the initial group. We started in a little, tiny, twenty, five hundred square foot, building up on the other end of the island and. Everybody was piled on top of each other, and there was a crammed into every little nook and corner in the space, and and it was just a crazy small space, but it. It was a place where. The you know, the people started coming and the ideas started flowing, and we figured out how the whole thing was going to work and started practicing, I guess, and because from there we grew to this twenty five thousand square foot building, so you know a tenfold increase and just. A huge explosion in the number of people and classes, and so it was great to have that tiny little space to to figure it all
