"9 30 here in Sydney I'm Paul Allen And I'm Doug Krishna at the Bloomberg interactive broker studio in New York market participants looking to add a little bit of risk today That was the theme in New York trading NASDAQ composite jumping about 2.7% Interestingly we have a stronger yen but that doesn't seem to be restraining futures for the nikkei Chicago contract implies a move of maybe 300 points to the upside when Japan comes online at the top of the hour We'll take a closer look at market action for you in a moment right now a few of the sours top is new stories The fayette is considering ways to blunt any impact on commercial bank deposits if the U.S. government decides to issue a digital dollar That's according to the fed's vice chair lael brainard Brainard told house lawmakers that more regulation is needed around crypto assets before making this kind of shift We've just seen in the last few weeks exactly the kinds of risks that we've all been talking about for some time A run on the platform a collapse in value of the stablecoin a stablecoin breaking the buck or moving off its one for one value because of lack of transparency Braynard added that digitalization is going to lead to some diminished use of cash and fewer bank deposits she said people are already migrating to mobile payment apps The fed so far has made no commitment to issue a digital dollar Baidu posted a surprising increase in revenue sales rose just 1% total on the top line was 4.2 billion that is for the first quarter Bloomberg Stephen engel tells us what saved the day Essentially AI has been driving They've been shifting away from more of the consumer side of the business to longer term investments in artificial intelligence So cloud computing and autonomous driving gains offset what was obviously a weak advertising sales climate in China Now at the same time Baidu streaming affiliate iQiyi posted its first quarterly profit since going public back in 2018 we had ADRs in Baidu here in New York trading up by more than 14% Soybean futures rose to a three month high futures for July delivery rose to more than $17 a bushel in Chicago and this comes amid steady demand from China economists at stone X say that in the next few months China is likely to favor cheaper U.S. supplies over Brazilian beans and that demand will tighten inventories on top of that corn planting is picking up pace in the U.S. and that's according to analysts from U.S. commodities they say that means soybeans may lose some acres and eventually have a smaller harvest 33 past the hour let's get you caught up on market action as we get set for trading in Tokyo Sydney and sold at the top of the hour In the U.S. buyers were firmly in control and the retailers really were in the spotlight Macy's lifted its profit forecast given demand strong demand at that for high end goods those ships were up 19% today Deep discount retailers like Dollar Tree and Dollar General not to be left out both companies raise their projections In the case of Dollar Tree a rally of 22% We touched on Alibaba earlier results beat estimates in terms of revenue figures and they are ADRs were up about 15% today and that helped us send a NASDAQ golden dragon China index higher by more than 7 and a half percent Back up take a look at the overall equity market today S&P 500 higher by 2% NASDAQ composite up by 2.7% the Dow industrial average better by about 1.6% So the outlook for rates is another part of the narrative here yesterday we were talking about the fed minutes suggesting a shallower path of rate hikes perhaps for the remainder of the year That view got a bit of support today from a lower than estimated inflation reading within that GDP report I'm speaking here of the core PCE deflator This is a preferred measure that the fed uses when looking at the cost of living it was up by 5.1% That's an annual rate for Q one It's down from the previous estimate of 5.2% so maybe maybe the bond market was breathing a little bit of a sigh of relief when it comes to inflationary pressures We saw the entire U.S. yield curve move a bit lower particularly at the shorter end to year treasury was down two basis points we were last quoted in New York at 2.47% two are checked at ten year at two 74 so that's where trading will begin in the Tokyo session at the top of the hour Little bit of dollar weakness and we do have a stronger Japanese yen here Right now one 27 spot zero 5 but that's not holding back a knee K futures Chicago contract right now a 26,975 So we're more than 300 points above where we were in the cash market yesterday in Japan So a lot of positivity to look forward to perhaps when markets come online at the top of the hour Paul All right thanks very much Doug 35 minutes past the hour now time for a check of global news.

Fresh update on "baidu" discussed on CNBC's Fast Money

"Up, we're all over the after hours action and gap and also both names on the move after reporting. We'll bring you the details plus China tech taking off the kwa BTF surgeon more than 7% so has the group found a bottom for diving into that next and fast money return. Welcome back to fast money. Check out the K web, China tech ETF today, soaring more than 7% for its best day in more than 7 years, 7 excuse me. 7 weeks, the 7 weeks. Big difference. The move coming on the back of the earnings beats from Alibaba and Baidu, COVID lockdowns in China helping spur demand at the online companies Baidu also saw strong growth in its cloud based offerings for the quarter. Both of these names posting their best day since March 16th. Notably, though, Baba didn't provide guidance to him. No, basically they gave their quarterly numbers 30 billion up 9% and better than some people had expected. They gave some insight into April. So the quarter that's we're in now. And that's it. And they said, actually, they're seeing they're seeing about a down 1% in terms of sales. And that's something that actually is probably a relief. But they are citing all of the economic uncertainty at home to say, there's just no way we can give guidance. And the question really is if you're an investor in Alibaba and a number of the shares in the K web, whether you even really care about this, or whether it's really more about the pressure on these companies that's coming from big brother. I mean, if you think about the valuation destruction and Alibaba, it was well before we really saw lockdown two or three or whatever, we're in terms of China. And I still believe those are the biggest issues. We talk about this all the time. Aliba is one of the great trading stocks. Certainly with a downward bias, but this thing could go to a 115 bucks on a chart, and you still haven't broken through that uptrend. I'm starting to get more constructive just on the reality check that does take some time in China in terms of what they've done to their national champion companies. They have to let Alibaba. I think their message was received loud and clear, by the way. I mean, I think the hubris that existed within that C suite two years ago has been completely dismantled and I think this company is doing what they need to do domestically. Even if the crackdown, if there's like a coast clear on the crackdown, the delisting fears are still there and then also, of course, the China lockdown impact on the economy is still there, Karen. Yeah, so the latter one you could think of as somewhat temporary transitory used to be a word, right? For the COVID shutdown. But on the former, do you ever get an all clear? Do you ever get? No. You know? You don't. It's just a clouds lift. And so for me, I'm done. All right. Meantime, one of these names is seeing a major uptick in options activity and traders are betting today's big gains are just the start of a bigger rally. My co has the action Mike. Yeah, so we're taking a look at Alibaba, which traded two and a half times. It's average daily options volume. That made it the 6th most active single stock option that was traded today. A lot of that was in the calls. We saw some short dated June 3rd, weekly, 100 strike calls trading over 12 and a half thousand of those traded for a dollar in 17 cents. Buyers of those were obviously betting that they rally that we saw today could continue through the end of next week. Pete, did you see this action? And do you believe that it's the start of a bigger rally? I'm not so sure about that bigger rally part. I'll answer that one first, and I did see this option activity today as well. Yeah, it's been really busy melt, but you know what? And the desk was just talking about this. The listing process is a huge issue for me. I'd rather be in the options though than the stocks because at least I've got less risk out on the table and I've been saying that for a long time. We just don't know, right? I mean, there's so many issues that go into this whole thing about trying to go through this. If you just looked at Baba and you actually got rid of the name itself and just took a look and said, look at this balance sheet, what do you think? Everybody, including the entire desk and I think so many people would say, you know what, I'm going to buy that stock. Look at the cash flow. The free cash flow is over a $110 billion. They've got all these other attributes that look fantastic, but the problem is we just don't know what they're going to do with this. And what we have to do with this. So I'll stick to the options and the option activity in the ETFs from China have been very, very active of late for sure. To the bullish side. Mike, thank you for more options action. Be sure to tune into the full show. That is Friday 5 30 p.m. Eastern Time coming up. We've got more retail earnings coming your way. Shares of gap in Alta on the move will bring you the numbers next plus worrisome weather inbound. The impact this year's hurricane season could have on the energy trade in the stocks where you can seek shelter from the storm. That's when he's back in two..

"Best day in almost two weeks and the big upside driver there Alibaba up nearly 14% is of course the Chinese online retailer They put up a very solid quarter beating both top and bottom line estimates that came as a little bit of a surprise but it turns out all the China COVID lockdowns had Chinese consumers shopping from what is essentially an online mall The positive sentiment has extended to all sorts of other Chinese ADR some of the better well-known ones Baidu and JD.com Charlie All right we thank you very much Abigail Doolittle keeping track of those ADRs So again recapping it is an update on Wall Street that perhaps putting it mildly 2.2% gain right now in the S&P are by 90 points the Dow up 599 up 1.8% as stack up 349 up by 3.1% I'm Charlie palette and that is a Bloomberg business flash This is balance of power with David Weston The world has changed massively since cover in 24 since Putin went in And neither side is willing to negotiate The sanctions as a rule can take some time to truly bite Where the world of politics meets the world of business What we've seen so far in the pandemic is that when we don't act early we lose more lives From the Supreme Court but justice Alito is now the centerpiece of conversation Candidates all across the United States Balance of poem is David Weston on Bloomberg radio Secretary of State blinken lays out U.S. policy toward China What we don't know about school shootings in the wake of the tragedy and uvalde.

"Yet another big crackdown, right? Steam, the official version of steam no longer being available just the massively curated call it, if I'm being nice version of Chinese theme. And then on the other hand, in the same breath, Baidu, which is a Chinese company, Chinese search engine, laying off people as a consequence of this, these kinds of regulations. Lindsay maybe start with you in terms of where does this all end, I guess. We've covered Chinese regulation stories before we have seen slowing in growth. We covered that last week where growth in China and gaming was slowing as a consequence. Now we see layoffs. I'm just curious where you think this all ends. Been sitting here asking myself the same question because I still don't feel like I am even understand the strategy with doing all of this and taking a massively popular sector of your economy and just decimating it for what, especially since historically, it's not like we've seen huge amounts of what would be considered threats or uprising towards the CCP. So I just and obviously that's from completely outsiders perspective. It was just like this isn't, I don't know, gaming just doesn't seem like the center of the revolution by any means. It's just a massively popular and exportable thing that China does well and they're just taking an axe to it. I really, I don't know where this ends, but when I think about it from a global perspective, I hope it shows other countries. The importance of investing and doing smart regulation in the gaming industry, bare minimum. I think that this is a really good example of what not to do. And I do think it leaves a hole in the industry globally that can be filled by other places that have better regulatory environments and just as much innovation. So hopefully we can see some cool new stuff happen as a result, but I really don't understand the strategy here. Or why I'm not an expert on Chinese politics, of course, and maybe someone in the chat knows better than I do. I'm happy to learn more about that..

"I'm Nathan Hager with your global look ahead at the top stories for investors in the coming week You know Facebook all I'm sorry I should say meta isn't the only company hoping to dive into the metaverse In fact China is about to hold its first metaverse conference For more let's go to Bloomberg daybreak Asian host Brian Curtis Nathan Baidu says it will unveil its metaverse product called she wrong in the coming week It will happen at the company's Baidu create 2021 developer conference Bloomberg intelligence estimates the metaverse market opportunities could reach $800 billion and it will likely attract other Chinese players led by Tencent and ByteDance Joining us for a look at this burgeoning market and especially Baidu's role in it is Matthew kanterman Bloomberg intelligence senior research analyst Matthew thanks very much for joining us What do we know so far about the Baidu shirang metaverse environment We don't know very much so far I mean all of this is at such a nascent stage It seems like they're building something similar to what Roblox looks like or what Facebook meta's horizon looks like Some sort of avatar driven virtual world I think if you take a step back and you just think about their presence in the Internet it's largely been driven by search for a long time That's their core way they interact with consumers And they're trying to figure out how do they stay relevant as the Internet evolves from the web two era as we knew it the mobile social era into this metaverse era which is really the Internet enabled by real-time 3D software which is quite a broad definition but that's actually how we think about the metaverse It's not just a VR headset And so when you look at it through that lens search is going to be a different way of how we find information how we interact with people and search for that And so they're trying to position themselves to maintain that leadership as the Internet evolves itself And so we'll see exactly the details But it's clear that they're thinking ahead and thinking about defending their position as we enter this next era Well given the footprint of Tencent and ByteDance wouldn't they be even better positioned I totally think so I mean I think it's obviously the metaverse is evolving out of the gaming sector It's clear that that's becoming the first iteration of the metaverse Like I mentioned Roblox you look at what things like Tencent has done in honor of kings Again if you define the metaverse as we do as the Internet enabled by real-time 3D software from unity or from Epic Games is unreal game developers have the most experience using real-time 3D And so clearly they're best positioned to build the metaverse at least in its initial iterations And so yes someone like Tencent or ByteDance who's been investing heavily in gaming and has armies of the developers clearly has a leg up But I think there's other avenues On our podcast we ask the question recently what does the world of finance look like in the metaverse I don't necessarily know the answer to that But there's clearly lots of things that we don't know And so even though these initial applications clearly are evolving out of gaming there's a lot more to go down the road that we just don't have the answers to yet So no doubt a lot of companies in China are rushing to register trademarks on this in some way related to the metaverse I believe it's you and you Joe in Chinese But it's surprising because the regulators have already spoken about the risks right Yeah I mean I think any time there's a hot topic buzzword thing in this time clearly it was kicked off by Facebook changing its name to meta platforms and going all in on the metaverse and committing to invest $10 billion a year which is quite a large sum of money into this burgeoning economy But a lot of companies jump on the van wagon Oh actually no we're a metaverse company now because we do X Y and Z and I think the regulators are just telling everyone to pause take a step back and focus on substance versus hype because there is so much hype And if you look under the hood Tencent actually historically has always been very coy and very kind of reserved and how they talk about their product development And they let the products speak for themselves And they've been extremely reserved I mean they're the last earnings call back in November There were several questions about the metaverse And I think many of them were uninformed about what the metaverse is They're asking about VR headsets I mean again this is not a VR headset There's way more going on Ten cents already a leader in the metaverse today as it stands and they will continue to be because they're so broad based and they have such experience and broadly interactive entertainment So clearly they have a strong position without a VR headset And I think if you look at where some of these companies are coming from in terms of hyping it up and using the term metaverse to drive their stock price in the short term that's where the pushback comes from from the regulatory agencies And for Chinese policy makers what do they see as the main risks here I mean the biggest risk I think is a couple I mean one of the big technologies that's underpinning a lot of the metaverse outside of China right now is user generated content and kind of taking this concept of the creator economy and kicking it into overdrive We've seen that with Roblox for example Clearly that's something that's going to be difficult inside of the Chinese market given content restrictions that exist there So I think that's part of it And I think the other part is just being careful to not let there be market manipulation and really focus on the companies that are actually building this for the companies that are just really good at hyping it up Can companies like roadblocks and Epic Games get any kind of foothold in China So they're trying Roblox has a joint venture with Tencent and I believe it's called lobo in Chinese that probably but they launched in China back in June They've already taken it down though and they're kind of going back to the drawing board given the restrictions on the gaming sector for minors You look at Roblox roughly 80% of their daily active users are under the age of 18 which is the audience that's been hit the most by the regulations in China that have come down reducing playtime for minors on games So they have to re tweak the platform They're going to focus more on education applications for China So we'll see how that goes I think they have a long view so they're not willing to give up right away We saw Fortnite from Epic Games They gave up on China recently They pulled the long-standing beta of Fortnite in China that was going on It's a tough environment for foreign companies operating in China trying to get approvals for games you have to get a game license to run that game at large scale and monetize it So I think a lot of things are working against them But I think over time there's hope that as regulators come to realize that more and more of the economy is going to live in the digital world and the metaverse is what's going to power this They're going to have to find ways to allow this to happen It's just you know making sure that we put the right guardrails in place because if you look at the prior version of the Internet we kind of let everyone run free and run riot and we end up in a situation now where they're having to come back in and put caution flags halfway through the race rather than put the guardrails in place first And so I think they're really looking at that and trying to set the stage for this and put the rules and regulations in place now as we build towards this vision for the metaverse Matthew Cameron Bloomberg intelligent senior research analyst I'm Brian Curtis along with Doug Kushner You can catch us every weekday for Bloomberg daybreak Asia beginning at It is manufactured. Right yeah it is it really is. It's produced assembly lines different deal so we don't even try to beat on that note. We baidu is the lobby or the amenity spaces right. Those are high touch points. And there's a different level of value mean in those bases and it makes sense. Sometimes i advocate those and then on other projects where it's for a retailer may be rolling out several dozen we might do the prototype or the first cheaper types and then we would partner with another company who has more capacity or frankly just what our clients parker with another company that has the capacity to some of the bigger during those particular type of jobs that as a designer resonate with you because i will tell you that as i've looked through i don't think it's creeper of me 'cause i'm on instagram. Analyst: Didi's IPO Was a Disaster. Here's Why

"Calls the DD IPO a disaster with more on that and what China's crackdown means for more tech companies in his Edith Yeung of Race Capital is a China expert. And we're so glad to have you here because Once again dd feeling the pain share price. I mean, now, like 11 bucks well below where the IPO price was. And the question marks surrounding who knew? And when? Why was it such a disaster in your own minds? I Is such a disaster because there's a lot of rumors, speculation that maybe the founder and CEO both ignore about the request and the change and make sure that they need to comply with the data security and compliance before they go public. Regardless and there's a lot. This costs a lot of action lawsuit going on now, and there's a lot of hatred for the founders and also for the for the president, and it's just really unfortunate to see what's going on. Which in my mind, I think you know, companies send of really chilling effect for many, many Chinese companies that with the goal to get listed in In the U. S recently, including companies like Kid Keep, and Himalayas recently wanted to go IPO in the U. S. I heard that both call it off because of what's going on with the D. Link Doc as well, postponing its IPO. The ramifications there that is this to your mind's eye, Edith. What China wants. Baidu has rallied 200% in the past year. Analysts bet it can keep going as it lists in Hong Kong

"Of chinese internet giant by do edged up eight tenths of a percent in its secondary listing today on the hong kong stock exchange. The gains paled in comparison to one's by other chinese tech giants including quite show which surged more than one hundred ninety percent last month. Such listings have been dubbed homecomings for chinese companies that also trade on us stock exchanges. David quoque cofounder of the smart investor explains why investors gave by do such a muted perception in hong kong. Why is by to even going to hong kong in the first place. It's already got twenty four billion in the bank. So why is it going to hong kong just to raise three billion. us dollars. And that i think is the question that investors asking. It's not the only technology stocks that has seen sort of a lackluster performance. I think jd dot com saw a bigger rise than by did today but still not anywhere near what were used to sing in public offerings. Do you think this is a problem of an oversaturated market of these so-called homecomings for chinese companies. I think it's also partly because investors have got their eyes on possible interest rate rises and consequently they are saying that technology companies are not really sort of the place to be right now ultimately when you have a look at some of these technology companies particularly the ones that already have a primary listing in america. They are coming home to hong kong and part of that. Reason is because they are very concerned about the frosty relationship between america and china and if that frosty relationship turns into a big freeze then of course they want to have some way in which they can. Select listing where they can attract chinese investors. David co founder of the smart investor in singapore. Thanks for breaking this down

Buzzfeed and I want to get into this in the third hour. buzzfeed actually has taken satellite data. and has been able to show the concentration camps in China they've been able to find them on maps. Ironically, the way they were able to find them on maps China has a mapping platform called. Baidu, and Baidu e shows you certain parts of the map where. You All your grace squares you don't actually see what's there on the satellite and so buzzfeed actually commissioned a private company to fly their satellites and take pictures where all those gray squares word guess what's their concentration camps? It continues to amaze me the NBA, is willing to walk off the court in this country for racial injustice and makes billions from China and keeps his mouth shut. And I do think that matters. It's not a what about situation It is a consistency situation. The NBA does not just make money off of American basketball fans. It makes lots of money off China. And that is willing to be brave and bold and and not play games here and walk off courts and protests to social injustice here. But not do that in China suggested actually is about the money for them. And it was great of the Republicans to have someone on stage last night who was willing to talk about the stuff. And in stand up. And speak until the truth. Because there aren't a whole lot of people willing to do that these days with China with you got the NBA boycotting in the like and here again, we see the NBA as we've seen throughout the summer and also the WNBA wearing the black lives matter shirts, all of the players and and and their fans. So many of them with the black screen for black lives matter that day on Social Media and here it is NBA again, leading the way this is a remarkable development. It will be seen I think for what it is as something that's historic that will be study fifty or one hundred years from now because it is a big part of this conversation and. We've seen over and over again these NBA players have a conscience that so many other athletes really don't seem to exhibit and you may disagree with them. Moderna stock surges 17% on coronavirus vaccine trial news

"Going to start with the stock of the Dan. That's MODERNA. Because MADERNA's shares up in the neighborhood of like ten twelve percent after the company said they're Covid, nineteen vaccine candidate produced a robust response. That's their word. Robust it all forty five patients that were involved in an early study. Encouraging News Emily. I'm sure that's why we're seeing. The reaction. In the stock I will point out that at the end of this month. Modern is going to be doing a much bigger trial. They're gonNA. Start a trial with thirty thousand people so hopefully, the results of that test are just as encouraging. But what did you make of this news? There is a lot to unpack year. This study with forty five patients, which to your point. Robust Immune response and producing antibodies that could prevent or at least counter the spread of this new covid. It started to come out, and it's a phase one study, so don't read much into it, but it is promising not just for investors, but for humankind that we may be making some progress on the Front for creating a corona virus vaccine, but what's really important to remember with these earnings is or Is that this is the first covert vaccine to be tested human, so we're very early stage here. This is just a phase one study. The big big dog is as you mentioned towards the end of July. There's going to be likely some face three tests moving forward where they're going to test this vaccine at upper thirty thousand people. That's going to be a lot more informative for investors and more importantly for everybody. As to whether or not, this vaccine really has to veracity to be the preventative measure that we've all been looking for.

Is Now An Opportune Moment To Examine Tencent Holdings

"Or tech giant Tencent reports earnings in the coming week the works of the prisoner and Brian Curtis are standing by with more Bob Tencent holdings is reporting earnings next weekend may provide a degree of hope that some firms are managing well through the crisis Bloomberg intelligence says the ten cent is likely to report strong fourth quarter sales and profit growth as it expands gaming fintech and social ad businesses then I thought we'd take a look at this entire area with Bloomberg's face turned laying to get some insights into ten cent and others and how they are managing through the coronavirus survey thanks very much for joining us now we had some warnings already from companies like Ali Baba and JD dot com and we had been told or with its earnings missing estimates contents sent bucked the trend yeah Brian I think we we got to recognize that the the quarter data reporting is the fourth quarter right and that's really before the virus outbreak started in January so I think fourth quarter results probably going to be intact groove is robust online games is recovering from the regular tree set back in twenty eighteen at stake spending so all's good right but what the market will really be looking for is any form of guidance into what the first quarter's going to look like and we've seen data that suggests that the show online services such as online games online video who work from home software cloud computing stuff like that has actually seen increased usage imprint the penetration with the outbreak in January and February physical businesses e-commerce foot delivery these things have obviously seen a lot of disruption because of travel restrictions and and logistics disruptions and so on so in terms of what the market had been discounting for the first quarter considering the fact that the lunar new year holiday was a major component in that especially working E. commerce is related does there have to be a major re thinking now in terms of earnings expectations I think a lot of fun it has been priced in worship places that obviously in the loss a couple of weeks being the not doing too well full China internet companies so we've seen reports coming out from the likes of Ali Baba VIP shopping portal and JD suggesting that there will be a fairly significant sales contraction in the first quarter the upside is most of these companies are now saying that the increase penetration the accelerated user adoption is probably going to benefit them down the road when the epidemic subside so that it is difficult to quantify and I don't think a lot of consensus numbers have that in yet you think that this would put a lot of pressure on these companies to control their costs or in the case of ten cent do you think they're doing so this Stenson and I would see the entire time to eat internet space in general has been curtailing costs expansion in the loss a year and that actually has been driven in part by the trade war with the U. S. macroeconomic concerns so people have been tightening their belts already and with this virus outbreak impacting sales in the coming quarters all to it's likely to cost controls will heighten having said that a lot of these companies E. commerce companies for example Ali Baba and people don't have been put in place to support measures for the merchants and they use US subsidies to promote more spending by the users weaving commissions from merchants especially for delivery companies like me tons of these things put up her the bottom line right at least for the next one to two quarters yeah and maybe that will show up in the equity price action but I'm concerned about the credit side of the equation to particularly as we given all the stresses that we're been talking about in financial markets see credit spreads to a white now to bid it mean if you look at the bonds Ian and ten cents for example how have they been trading in is there a lot of concern on the credit side of the ledger I think the for this particular space all the companies are basically that cash and the the highly cash flow generate if every quarter even with a sales decline of fifteen to twenty percent in the coming quarters it is quite likely that the cash flows will be positive so I I'm not too concerned about the bonds that that Tencent Alibaba Baidu and
