"People. I don't want to give too much away, but I had trouble picking up the hatchet because I had just watched the movie all quiet on the western front. You know what I'm talking about, chick. I'd seen at the end, but I hadn't. Oh, yeah. It's Tom and I happen to watch separately, of course. All quiet on the western front, the new movie. It's as well done. It's amazing. Big Bafta Awards. It did. Yeah. I was watching the bathtub yesterday. The larger point is. Magical. Magical two hours in the afternoon, I was a British citizen. I was there watching them live. It's an artistic masterpiece, but the topic is so distressing and brutal. World War I? Sure. Yeah. It's not that I feel good movie. I was a mess, huh? And the rats, my God, the rats. Oh my God, the rats. So they're in there. Let's skip that one. That book the images have stuck with me for years. Honestly, I was talking to mister Godwin about it, and I had to stop watching it. Several times get up take the dogs out, get some sunshine and realize I was okay and wasn't in a trench. Is this a remake? Okay, because there is an older. It's so amazing. It's incredible. I hesitate to call it a remake. It's unbelievable. So in any event, there's a patch at scene in there that while I was putting up my little fence to keep the dog in, I thought, you know, if I flipped this around, we have more presidential information on the way. We're going to talk with comedian Greg Warren today. Huh? For an exciting episode of the Warren report. That was not on the board yet, so we read it and leave. Did your new football league start over the weekend? I watched the Daytona 500, I forgot to look around for what is it the XFL? They did. And The Rock was at the first game. He was. And he was at a couple others, too. They made a big deal out of them flying 280 three miles or something like that. And a private jet. He only has 9 private jets. I don't know how the guy did that. Did he do you like the halftime speech before the game? Get everybody pumped up. You know what there was a show on. It was on Friday on ESPN, but on ABC Saturday before the game called 54 and it was very inspiring. It's rock talking about why you started the league and there's 53 people in an NFL roster in your 54. You're going to get there. Oh. That's cool. So I hesitate to ask, this is the XFL, right? Yes, the U.S. starts in April. Okay. They had a pretty gay, a pretty good game at the end of almost overtime. Yesterday afternoon, but I didn't have to get the score of the team. So it didn't end like the Daytona 500. Oh my God. A lot of body work. Rick the Stenhouse junior. He won that race yesterday. Double. Double overtime. When you're that new rules here cause a lot of trouble. I'm not going to be a lot of wrecks on those last two. The XFL broadcast the announcers at the end of the game are audibly obviously trying to figure out how much time is left because no one knows anything about the new rules. And one of the guys said, now wait a minute. How far back do they have to go before it's a three point conversion instead of a two point conversion and they did that. They did a three point conversion. It was wonderful. Live television time, you can't beat it. Yeah. And someone was brought up Frankie Muniz last week. Yeah, I finished tenth in that race. I think he had a big smile on his face. He's apparently very talented. Got a request for Johnny loud one. Pat got one.

He is now nominated for another Emmy, best directing for a documentary or nonfiction program for The Beatles, get back, which itself is nominated for best documentary or nonfiction series. Sir, Peter Jackson. Over the course of our conversation, the 60 year old and I discussed how a kid from Wellington fell in love with the movies and began making films of his own, many, from the earliest days with a focus on visual effects, how a filmmaker who broke into the business making splatter horror films and whose only studio film before The Lord of the Rings had been a box office flop, came to be entrusted with that project's not one, but three very expensive films. Why he has in recent years, somewhat lost his desire to make narrative films and has instead gravitated toward documentaries, which require him to pour over and restore archival footage that most people have never seen before, what he makes of the current state of the film industry, and of Amazon's upcoming nearly half $1 billion TV version of The Lord of the Rings, plus much more. And so without further ado, let's go to that conversation.

"Thank you for tuning in to the 430th episode of awards Cheddar, The Hollywood Reporter's awards podcast. I'm the host Scott feinberg. And this episode was recorded live in front of an audience at the boulder International Film Festival. Shortly after my guest was honored with the fess outstanding performer of the year award. He is a Spanish actor who the Los Angeles Times called quote Spain's leading male star of his generation. Also noting quote, not since Victor Mature was at the height of his career in the 40s, has there been a male star of such bold sensuality. The New York Times for its part noted quote he has displayed a dazzling range that has made him part of that rare breed of actor. One who is capable of playing any role. Indeed, over the course of some 30 years in the business and dozens of films on both sides of the Atlantic, he has been nominated for an Oscar four times winning once. He was the first Spanish performer of any gender to receive an acting Oscar nomination and also the first to win, and he is one of only two performers of any gender who has received multiple Oscar nominations for films not in the English language. And his mantelpiece also includes Golden Globes, sag critics choice and Bafta Awards, 6 Goya awards, Spain's equivalent of the Oscar, two Venice Film Festival best actor prizes and one can film festival best actor prize. And in 2021, as the boulder International Film Festival acknowledged, he had a year second to none, starring in the Spanish entry for the best international feature Oscar, which was ultimately shortlisted. The good boss also in Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic dune, which is nominated for the best picture Oscar. And as Desi Arnaz and Ricky Ricardo in Aaron Sorkin's dramedy about I love Lucy and its creators being the ricardos. Javier, bardem. Over the course of our conversation, the 53 year olds and I discussed the family of filmmakers into which he was born and why he initially pursued a different path, the challenges and rewards of working in two different languages on two different continents. The projects which have demanded the most of him and of which he is proudest, both groups of which include being the ricardos, plus much more. And so without further ado, let's go to that conversation. So I am recently awarded person, so. Yes, careful with what you asked. That's right. That's a very dangerous piece of well, thank you so much again for being here. And this is a podcast where, as your wonderful wife, Penélope Cruz discovered, I think two weeks ago and she was my guest. We are going to go right back to the beginning and remember a lot in an hour. All right. For anyone who may not know, where were you born and raised in what did your parents do for a living? I was born in Kerala island, which is some islands in the Las baleares. In the south of Spain, near Africa, I was born in 1969, March 1st, and yeah. Happy birthday. Yes. 53 years old, two days ago. I said ballet is, I was wrong. It's Canary Islands, sorry. They're going to kill me for this in Spain. But it's been a cuny for everything. So it doesn't matter what I say or what I do. So my mother was an actress. She passed away 7 months ago. I'm fortunately, but she was working as an actress in Canary Islands. And my father was working there. He was doing his business. And I was born. And three years, three years after we moved to Madrid, and I was raised in Madrid. So I kind of consider myself a madrileno. A person from a tree because that's where I was grown. Now, you have understated how significant an actress your mother was because she was a wonderful actress. And you come from a family that has been compared to sort of, as a reference point for Americans and British people, the barrymores of Spain. Can you talk about who the other members of your family were who were also in the business before you? Of course, the father of my grandparent was an actor in the time where actors were not even allowed to be buried on sacred land in Spain because they were considered homosexuals and prostitutes, not that everything has changed. Yes, there are many homosexuals and prostitutes, some other job. It's a job as many other. We should be also respectful with that. But that's a different conversation. But what I mean is the idea that some people have of our craft is like the spiciness. Because with a minor job or it's a minor craft, it's a minor or whatever. That happened, especially in the Franco regime, dictatorship. My grandparents were actors, both of them, my mom was an actress. My uncle was a film director that really, really made history in my own country. And he was very active against the regime of Franco and he was imprisoned for that. He won camping festival. And he was the first Spanish director to ever be nominated for an Oscar. Funny enough, Juan Antonio barnum. Funny enough in 58. And I realized when I won the Oscar in 2008 that I was exactly 50 years later, amazing. And then my cousins are directors, script supervisor, musician, and producer. My brother and sister are actors. Hey, as I said the other day in the sake of work, I'm an actor. Yeah, right. What can I be? Well, now I think first we're on screen at the age of 6. There was like a TV movie that your mom was involved with. And then you were also on a kind of cereal at the age of 13. But basically, you are not that gung Ho to pursue the family business. And in fact, through the years when a lot of people are in college and other stuff, you decided you were going to go into painting and did and we're very talented and I'm sure still. But my question is, was that wanting to carve your own path? What was that about that you were not going to do what everybody else was doing? I guess he was. I was unfortunately, it was a very bad student. And I say, unfortunately, because if I was, if I'm in a student, if I would be the student that I was back in the day today, they will throw a meal different names..

"My guest today is an Emmy and Bafta Award winning and Golden Globe and sag award nominated English actress who is one of the most talented and exciting young performers in the business. Phoebe Waller-Bridge has called her a once in a generation actress. Matt Damon has said she's truly incredible. Directors are going to be beating down her door because she's a generational talent. And Shawn levy has said, it's seriously something that doesn't happen except maybe every ten years where a new actor arrives and doesn't feel like anyone you've seen before. Jodie comer best known for playing the charismatic psychopath of villanelle opposite Sandra Oh's eve on the BBC America drama series Killing Eve for which she became the youngest ever winner of the best actress in a drama series Emmy in 2019 at the age of just 26. Comber is coming off a pack 2021 in which she played her first lead in a big studio Hollywood film, levy's video game adaptation free guy, in which she received widespread acclaim for her portrayal of a COVID era nursing home worker on the limited series help, which aired on channel four in Britain and will soon be available on Acorn TV in the U.S. and in which she was widely lauded for her turn as a 14th century woman who dares to accuse a man of rape in Ridley Scott's film the last duel, a performance for which she is now garnering best actress Oscar buzz. Over the course of our conversation, the 28 year old and I discussed her accidental path to acting and the important role that the actor Stephen Graham a fellow Liverpool played in her rise, how she came to Killing Eve and what she has found most challenging and rewarding about playing villanelle. Why she used to fear that she wouldn't have the opportunity to act in films and what it has been like since she was given that chance plus much more. And so without further ado, let's.

"Too. Oh, huge. Yeah, my kid loves them. Exactly, right? And I think what, if memory serves, spunky two came out alongside Haiti's going wide or Returnal, there was another roguelike that came out and ate up all the oxygen around this because lucky too, obviously, to an extent a known quantity. Everybody loves spunky one, right? Like Andrew gold played it on every platform for like thousands of hours. But then it's one thing two came out. You're like, oh, it's gonna be great, 91 medicating. Clearly. Yeah, I know a few people that were like obsessed, obsessed with spelunky. A 100%. And then this is on there. I think icing on the cake in terms of this update. But I'm going to butcher this one. The inaccuracies. And that creates a process. Thank you. It's the one we've seen a million, not a million times. We've seen a couple of times in presentations and stuff like that. It comes to console and PC January 13, available on day one with Xbox game pass. The anacrusis is a four player cooperative first person shooter set aboard a massive starship stranded at the edge of explored space. Team up with your Friends in an infinitely replayable fight against alien hordes to unlock perks, weapons, and new ways to play that you can share with your team. Gary whitta I Greg Miller declare this the best update Xbox game pass has ever gotten. However, you are the host of the xcast. You live and breathe Xbox in a way I don't. I talk about Xbox game pass more as somebody on kind of funny games daily, shouting out what's coming to it this way, right? You're in the weeds, you're out there with a young man known as snow, bike Mike. No bicycle my score. That's right. Snowmaker Mike welcome to kind of funny games daily how are you? Good morning, Greg, I'm doing great. Gary, I'm here by your side to tell Greg that maybe this isn't the best month. I was gonna say, I mean, it's a good one, but it's not like there haven't been other really, really good ones in the past. My one thing would be obviously we're talking about this right now. I would immediately throw out when they got Bethesda. And they brought that Bethesda dump was good. I think clearly that's a pretty great week, but in terms of variety in terms of Medicare, in terms of great games, I think this is a great one. But Mike, Gary, I want you to discuss your team Xbox over here in the comments. What do you think? Bethesda is a good point. I'm also thinking about when they drop the entire Yakuza series. I mean, there's been some great game boss updates. Gary, I totally agree with you. And yeah, so I went back into the archives Gary to look up some older Xbox game pass announcements and I want to take you back to March 2021 that month began known as the sports month. As when Xbox game pass dropped a load of sports titles that we all wanted to play from mad and NFL 21, football manager NBA two K 21 and a L 21, but the month didn't stop there because Greg, you remember march 11th, 2021 is when they announced that all 20 games from Bethesda will be making their way. Not all 20, but 20 Bethesda titles will make their way on the game pass. And that, of course, is a massive one. Dishonored. The son of two doom doom two doom three doom 64 doom eternal Elder Scrolls morrowind oblivion. I mean, evil within fallout four fallout 76 fallen new Vegas prey rage to wolfenstein's, that might have been crazy of game pass right there to add on the sports. I think, you know, a lot of this gets forgotten of the EA play deal and I think we'll talk about that with mass effect and how important that EA play deal to bolster the lineup. I'm gonna hit you with another one here, Greg. You're welcome. And you're trying to skew the numbers already, which I appreciate. I love it. I love you coming and trying to win an argument. Remember, I said best update for Xbox game pass. You're counting a whole month. That'll be more. Xbox and you pass will get a second update. They get to a month, right? They do do to a month. You got to remember that happening a little bit later in the year. They did always do just one a month. And then they went to two. So some of these will be skewed, but I will agree with you Greg. When I look at this month right here, I'm really pleased with it. I think you can look at the April. You said you had April 1. I mean to stop you, I didn't mean to stop you. Oh, April. We got a very special one, Greg Miller, not only did we get Grand Theft Auto V on cloud and console, but we got your highly beloved MLB the show. That was a big one. It's only first party title. Yes, that was a big, big deal right there for a lot of Xbox fans because we don't really have a true MLB simulator game right there. We've had to put up with RBI baseball and super mega baseball. We had to put up with it. We were blessed to have that come over there. And so that was a really good one and I have one more for you Greg, that was very important to Xbox gamers. And that was in September 2020 and December 2020. I believe if my dates are close there. But that is when we received all of the destiny two package. We got destiny two with all of the expansions, which was a big deal for, of course, destiny fans all over the place. That was very, very strong. I mean, you don't even need to go that far back to argue that one of the better game pass you know period. He was talking about a month or whatever in game. Like, what's been the best month for game pass? Just last month, halo infinite and Forza horizon 5 both dropping what in the same four week period that's pretty amazing as well. So yeah, gameplay continues to go from straight to the track. I know it's practically become a meme now. We all joke about best deal in gaming, best in entertainment, but it really is, and I've said before, like if somebody would have come to me and say, I'm totally agnostic should I get a PlayStation or an Xbox in past generations I would always say I kind of flip a coin is really not that much in it between the two. Now game pass alone is enough to push me to what side to someone get an Xbox and get game pass and you're all good. Yeah. That's what I was going to get at. It's like, it's so interesting to have this conversation because you can look at it in a multitude of ways, right? Like you brought up Greg, you can look at the quality here. You can look at the metacritic score. You can look at the Bafta Awards. And you can look at that. And also just like what you get, right? I think they've done a great job at diversifying the different games that they put in here. It speaks to everyone, right? You talked about all the games that speak to you and then for me, games that speak to me is amber and spelunky too. I love those games with friends. Those are the games I'm always looking for on with game pass. But then also on the flip side, I talk about quantity, right? You talk about the Bethesda deal, the sports titles, and then the third title to all this is Xbox first party studio games. That's what we're here for, right?.

We have video chat forum discussion and one of the characters mentioned something about italians. not being able to make really good horror. And i thought like i hope this is like some sort of in joke. That went over my head. Because i mean if you were to make a mount rushmore of horror you would have surely dari or gento and lucia. Full ci on there and people would argue. Maybe a mario bava as well. But for sure you. You'd have our gento. I think he's as a stylistic master i think he would probably place him at the forefront. I'm rewatching stendhal syndrome. I was gonna actually podcast that informed by my recent visit to the art gallery of ontario. But it was a little bit. I wasn't quite in the mood for it but it doesn't matter like our gento. I think it may be a class by himself..

‘Nomadland’ Wins Big at BAFTA Awards – Complete List of Winners

"Held on Sunday night in London. As well as best film. It also won best director for Chloe Zhao and best actress for Frances McDormand. The BAFTA voting system had been changed this year after complaints that the awards were doing too little to encourage diversity. Here's our arts correspondent been sent out. E think friends part of an American tradition. My dad used to say what's remembered lives. It was no surprise. Nomad Land took the best film of the bastards. Lots of people expected to do the same at the Oscars. Two weeks from now. It's a powerful investigation of the soul of America, with Frances McDormand, superb in the lead role, and her win as best actress was predictable. There was talk of best actor going to the late Chadwick Boseman instead at 83, Sir Anthony Hopkins took it for the father. I don't know what she's cooking up against me, but she's cooking some of them. What's he talking about? That I'm not leaving my flash British Film Academy worked hard to broaden the electorate for this year's awards. That led to more diversity in the nominees. At least there was a lot of admiration for rocks. A realistic story of black British life. I think you should tell someone about young, long. You wouldn't understand. What's the problem? Talk to me. I don't get it. Don't worry for me. You're not. There's such a beautiful work. You have to leave. Get out get out was nothing contrary to what some expected rocks did not take outstanding British film. Its central character is played by Bucky Back Ray, who'd had no acting experience. Her reaction over zoom as she learned she had been chosen as best newcomer was the highlight of the evening. The winner. Off the E Rising Star award is Vicky Bakley. Angelina Jolie talks about daughters' surgeries

"We're learning now. According to column in Time magazine written by Angelina Jolie that two of her daughters with Brad Pitt have recently been in and out of various surgeries. Angie wrote a personal essay in honor of International Women's Day and she kind of praised her daughters in how strong they've been throughout all of this. She wrote quote. I have spent the last two months in and out of surgeries with my eldest daughter and days ago watched her younger sister go under the knife for a hip surgery. They know that I'm writing this. Because I respect their privacy and we discussed it together and they encouraged me to write. They understand that going through medical challenges and fighting to survive in. He'll is something to be proud of and quote. I hope everything's okay This sounds like scary. I don't know what's going on with Zahara. But she's the oldest daughter that they're talking about being in and out of surgery that's gotTa be scary as hell anyway after. This piece came out in time. Magazine page six swiftly came out with some anonymous source that spoke to them about Brad. Pitt missing the BAFTA. 's and they confirmed that he missed the BAFTA awards for Zaharah's surgeries Brad Pitt missed the Baptist to be by his daughter's side as she recovered from an operation multiple sources. Confirm to page six end quote. Unclear if they're talking about Sahara I'm guessing they are since shallows the one with the hip surgery which just now happened page. Six added that quote. A friend of the family confirmed that Pitt who dedicated his Oscar win to his six kids stayed home in La to support his daughters however the friend admitted that Pitt had never spoken publicly about his kids and never will as Jolie spoke out in a Time magazine. Essay published Sunday in honor of International Women's Day Jolie wrote that her eldest daughter fifteen-year-olds Zahara and one of her younger daughters Shiloh. Thirteen were operated on end quote. Is it just as the source from Brad? Pitt's side is kind of shading Angie. They're like Oh she talks about the kids but Brad doesn't like come on so boring. I do not like Gwyn Brad and Angie like fight with each other. I think it's it's Kinda gross mostly when Brad does it and she can do whatever she wants. She's been through enough the real takeaway here. In my opinion is that Angelina Jolie has had this column in Time magazine for a while now and I'm just now learning about it. This is fascinating. I looked at like clipped her author name and I read some of the other headlines. It's mostly like international humanitarian causes and stuff but this personal essay for International. Women's Day is definitely an interesting turn.

'1917' wins best film and best director at BAFTA awards

"So let's jump over to the baptism this is like the equivalent of like England's equivalent of the Oscars right. Yeah exactly this is the the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards and they they tend to skew a little bit more towards British films for obvious reasons so it should come as no surprise that both nineteen seventeen and director Sam Mendez came out on top with a win for best film and for best director and just for good measure nineteen seventeen also one on outstanding British film which isn't a war that they give specifically to films that were made by British filmmakers across the pond so no surprise there even the best best actor awards all went to the same people that it seems like they're going to go to for the Oscars Joaquin Phoenix Won. Four Joker Renee Zellweger one for Judy. The Laura dern won for marriage story for supporting actress and Brad Pitt one for once upon a time in Hollywood for supporting actor. So these these all seem like deadlocks for the acting categories Gorey's wants the Oscars roll around and it just continues to spell more a positive spin for nineteen seventeen winning the Oscar.
