"Baffert. Is one of the most successful horse trainers in the history of the sport. And Baffert has had many, many many wins in the last decade. Bob Baffert has become a celebrity. Horse trainer. And every year America watches the Kentucky Derby, getting together wearing big hat to drinking mint juleps and having their own Kentucky Derby parties and laying some cash on it. Then by and large kind of fades away. But Bob Baffert's name is always front and center. If you're a horse fan of any degree you probably heard and no Bob Baffert, Even if you're not a horse racing fan, you've probably heard of Bob Baffert. He is one of the biggest names is not the biggest name in a sport full of animals. He's the biggest human And he just got suspended. From the Kentucky Derby by Churchill Downs for the next two years. He's not gonna be able to have his horses, race or horse that he trains race. The next two. Kentucky Derbies. And This is because no matter how much he tries to excuse it away, no matter how many types of stories he concoct One is more ridiculous than the next Churchill Downs is calling him out on it. He is suspended from the home of the Kentucky Derby for two years. After another positive post race drug test was confirmed. It is effective immediately. And follow the confirmation of Medina Spirits positive test earlier Wednesday, another one this happened yesterday. Churchill Down, said reckless practices in substance violations that jeopardize the safety of our equine and human athletes or compromised the integrity of our sport or not acceptable. Yada, yada yada. Mr. Baffert's record of testing failures threatens public confidence. But here's where it gets good. We know that Bob Baffert's had multiple horses fail multiple tests, and he's given multiple reasons why When Churchill Downs drops this hammer, I had to laugh. Quote given these repeated failures over the last year. Including the increasingly extraordinary explanations. We firmly believe that asserting our rights to oppose those measures is our duty. Again increasingly extraordinary explanations. That means dude, your lies are getting worse. The increasingly extraordinary explanations. That is, Bob. You sound pathetic. Bob, stop lying. Bob, get ahold of yourself, man. Bob, We know you're cheating. Bob, are you serious? That's essentially what Churchill Down, said publicly yesterday. Bob, are you serious? The increasingly extraordinary explanations. It sounds like me hearing why Chef was late to work. Increasingly extraordinary explanations. That is, Bob. You're shoveling a lot of Bs. We know it. You know it. Stop. You're embarrassing yourself. I mean, the best one has to be the tainted. Hey, claim. That somebody in the stall In the horse's space. Was on flu medication. And he relieved himself in the stall, which got on the hay which the horse then eight, and that's why it tested positive. Which, when you think about it, you almost have to give Bob Baffert credit because it's so stupid. It's such a bad explanation. It's such a bad lie. This is stupid. Why did my horse test positive? Ah, um, hated Hale. Would you believe? Yeah. Cheated. Hey, uh, One of my guys had coffee. Yeah, Yeah, That's the ticket and he was taking some medication for it. Yeah, uh and he had to go to the bathroom. That's right. He went to the bathroom in the soul. He went on on the Hey, Yeah, yeah, Yeah. One of the hay and then the horse ate the Hey. Yeah, that's the ticket. Bob, stop. Your humiliating yourself. You are the most successful trainer in the sport. And here you are lying, and everybody knows you're lying, and it's so bad we have to actually tell you stop lying. The increasingly extraordinary explanations use that the next time your teenage son comes home and tries to explain where he was for the seventh straight Friday night. Out past two a.m.. Uh, Timmy. It's an increasingly extraordinary explanation. You keep giving me and that's why you're now going to be grounded. It's this serious of increasingly extraordinary explanations to where I can no longer believe that you were just playing video games again or your phone had Suddenly lost power. And you didn't have a charger around the increasingly extraordinary explanations equals Bob. Stop lying. You're embarrassing yourself. So good. Come on the league. Get Bob Baffert out of there. The guy is embarrassing. The guy can't even lie well. Churchill Downs says every reason to not want to suspend The most successful trainer in the sport for two years, and yet they're forced to do it because all he keeps doing is failing tests and lying about them. It's terrible. It's It's like Roger Goodell telling Bill Belichick because of your increasingly extraordinary explanations on why you keep getting caught cheating. We're gonna have to suspend you for two years. It's like the NBA and Adam Silver. Have to tell Steve Kerr Gregg Popovich. Sorry. I mean, the lies. You're just getting.

Medina Spirit Will Compete in Preakness After Passing Drug Tests
"That Medina spirit the winner of the Kentucky Derby, is cleared to race and Saturday's Preakness Stakes after the Kentucky Derby where Medina Spirit one a drug test revealed a therapeutic in Medina Spirits System, which is banned on race day. Fame's trainer Bob Baffert, who trained Medina Spirit revealed that the horse tested positive. Elevated levels of beta methods own. Baffert released a statement on May 11 saying that Medina Spirit had been treated for a skin condition with an ointment that contained the substance. Quote Medina Spirit earned his Kentucky Derby win and my far masala gist, sir, have told me that 21 people grams of better methods, Sone would have no effect on the outcome of the race. Baffert previously said in a statement. Medina Spirit is a deserved champion and I will continue to fight for him. After this Medina spirit went through subsequent tests that came back clean. And therefore is able to race in the Preakness. Marty and McGee host Marty Smith talked on SportsCenter with El Duncan about the situation and also how Baffert is essentially battling himself in this race when it comes to the Triple Crown. I've been texting all week long with Bob Baffert Ale back and forth. I did reach out to him after this ruling came down, asked him if he had any comment. And he said, Right now he feels like it's best to keep his comments to himself. The less he says, the better. Certainly I respect that now because concert tour and Medina spirit are now eligible for the Preakness. That means Baffert is now racing against himself for Triple Crown history, of course, since he trains both of those horses if concert tour were to win the Preakness here on Saturday that eliminates Medina spirit from a Triple Crown opportunity earlier this week, I had the opportunity to talk with Jimmy Barnes about that. Who's here? Training the horses on Baffert's behalf, and I asked him What's it like for one horse to be racing against another one. A Triple Crown is on the line, he said, Man, It's not a challenge it all. It's
Medina Spirits Kentucky Derby Drama, Explained
"Matt i know very little about horse racing so i'm so glad you're joining me today. Thank you. I appreciate kamya. Matt hegarty is covered horse for more than twenty years and he reports on the macintosh industry for the daily racing form. So i know that the preakness is tomorrow matt. I know that it's the second race into the triple crown. And i know that medina the horse that won the kentucky derby tested positive in a drug test after that win but before you walk us through exactly what happened there. How would you describe the drama in the sport that you cover right now. This is pretty unprecedented. We haven't had a derby positive in horse racing since nineteen sixty sixty when you start talking about drugs in horse racing it. It aims it up to the next level you know we've had drug positives and being debated in the past the the most important ones that have happened in acid involved. in the same trainer bob baffert. This is a continuation of a pattern. And i think. That's what's causing a lot of the uproar that this wasn't a trainer who got caught up in some sort of mix up with therapeutic medication. It's trainer who is at the top of the game hall of fame member. A person who has one more derbies eighty percent history as long as on stands and he has a pattern of being sloppy in his barn operations. And it's hard to believe that you could be sloppy going into the most important race on the calendar.

"Baffert's whores. Right. So why don't we get into this? And no. I deny that categorically deny that By the way, because the pandemic I can't even see my own horses. So how would I get close enough to one of Baffert's horses? So while I was out horse racing what horse racing yet again, which obviously was puts me kind of a bad spot, right? Because I'm involved in horse racing. So full disclosure is I get into this? Yes, I am a participant in the sport. Yes, I have been for the better part of a decade and a half. No, I'm not as involved to the extent that I was back in the day but is part of jungle racing. Janet and I do still breed and race And on that rare occasion we still buy into a horse or partnership. Just not nearly as much as we used to back in the day. When I say we breed. We have one horse. We breed too. It's a very small breeding operation. We have a single horse a year. So It's a business, but I never got into the game for the business, because more often than not, the business kicks your ass. Believe me, way more people lose way more money than the few people that make money in it. Yes, we had some big years. Yes, we want to be enormous races. Yes, we made some go. Yes, I made a lot of dough in some years. But in some years, you would not believe the amount of money that we lost and the business beat the crap out of us. And which is little money on fire. However, I never stopped loving the equine athlete by adore the horses. I know some You have a hard time believing that man, I'm in love with the animal. All of them. They're amazing. There's so many things about that game that I love that keeps bringing me back and that's why I'm still in this game. Because when the sport is good, it's incredible. But Fine. When the sport is bad, it's brutal. And something brutal happened to the sport. One of the worst things that could happen. This sport did happen when the Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for the drug bet methods own after the race and could still be disqualified. So yet another black eye for a sport that has already been bruised and battered and taken many Annie I mean, it doesn't get much worse than the Derby winner trained by arguably not only the best trainer in the sport, but the actual face of the sport. Not my words, but straight from the horse's mouth. No pun intended, Heo. But if the Kentucky Derby winner test positive after winning the race And then the sport's most famous, most successful trainer is right in the middle of it. That's another embarrassment for a sport there could have the ill afford another embarrassment. Again on its biggest stage involving his biggest star. I mean, there are no more eyes left to Dodd. Of course, Bob Baffert has denied the entire thing he says he never has given the horse the drug in question, not even once. Never mind that another one of his stars gamin, who finished third in the Kentucky Oaks tested positive for the same exact drug. Bobby be insists they have never given this horse that drug so As for how that drug got into the horse's system, if neither he nor any of his staff gave it to him. That's when things got wacky and Bobby be when it's a Bobby V mode and said pretty much anything and everything, just short of accusing the horse off injecting himself. With the drug. He suggested that the sample may have been tampered with one of his tried and true deflections when this type of thing comes up He also tried to convince us that while he's out here trying to save the sport from itself, the world is actually out to get him. Which would suggest he thinks that somehow some way someone you know as Mark in Hollywood just suggested. Somehow, some way someone maybe even me. Got into the barn and injected his 12 to 1 long shot prior to the race without him, knowing Crazy, right? But far from the craziest excuse that he's gone with in the past. So he then goes on a brief media tour. They only made things worse. Not better, like when he went on Fox News and said that the horse was a victim of Cancel culture. Maybe he was saying that he was a victim of cancel culture. But I think you meant the horse. Cancel culture. Huh? I mean, that's an absurd statement to make. In fact, that makes no sense whatsoever. What did the horse hoof Out a regrettable tweet from a few years back there was uncovered after the race. And that's why everybody is coming for him right now because the horse went for the iPhone and hoofed out something really regrettable. Where are you saying that you're the victim of cancel culture because Churchill Downs suspended you after your horse tested positive for drugs after you won the Derby when you have done so many great things for them. Either way. What you're saying what does not make sense. So stop trying to get around this by throwing around catchy buzzwords, Bob. I mean, what are the PC police after you and the horses Well, Like you're confusing, Cancel culture with potential discipline for a positive test. There's a big difference. Now I know you're looking for everybody to give you the benefit of the doubt. But it's hard to do that when you've had five positive tests in the last year alone, and by the way That's five that we know about. As far as this notion that everybody's out to get you. Why is that? Why you're one of the best things in the sport? Or at least you were. This is a sport that needs stars. The horses rarely are the stars because if they're good enough to be stars there quickly ushered off the track. Taken right to the breeding shed where the real money is so in a sport lacking an abundance of real stars, you were it, Bob. So why would they be looking to take you down? Why would they be out to get you when they need you desperately? So, Baba says, really wacky things after his tests or his horses have tested positive. Like I said, Like that time you tried to argue that he had a groom taking cough syrup, and that same groom took a leak in a stall on some hay and the horse ate the hay. And that's how the drug got into the horse's system. I mean, wild stuff like that. Now today, his explanation is a lot more reasonable. The AP reported this this morning and I quote in a statement issued by his lawyer, Baffert said Medina Spirit was treated for Dermatitis with the ointment once a day leading up to the May one race, and that equine pharmacology experts have told him this could explain the test results. Alfred said the horse tested positive for 21 PICO Grams of the substance, which is typically given the horses therapeutically to help their joints and is a violation even at a trace amount on race day in Kentucky. All right, so that is certainly more reasonable and some of these other things he's throwing around. Maybe he's telling the truth. Maybe that is how the drug ended up in the horse and that it was part of another drug. That the vet treated the horse with maybe maybe, But even if that's the case, I'm gonna make the argument that I made for every other athlete who test positive and then throws the I have never knowingly taken drugs card or that the drug was actually in a legal supplement that I was taking. I've said then, and I'll say it right now. You're a professional athlete. Your body is your money maker. Therefore, you have to know absolutely everything that you're putting into your body. And if you don't know it's your job to know. And if you didn't know you should have known So if in fact that drug that that horse tested positive for was in in another drug, and then the vet administer that drug, then the vet had to know. It's your job to know. Now because I'm.
Baffert Says Derby Winner Medina Spirit Tested Positive
"Baffert says Medina spirit was found to have twenty one Pico grams of the steroid betamethasone in a post race samples I got the biggest got punch in racing for something that I didn't do Baffert's horses have been the subject of other positive drug tests over the years and the most group nice trainer and I have millions of eyes on but you know what I don't have a problem with it and the last thing I want to do is is something jeopardized the greatest two minutes in sports what data spirit will undergo more testing but if the horse is officially disqualified mandolin would be declared Kentucky Derby winner meanwhile Baffert says the horse will race in the Preakness a win there such a triple crown in motion I'm Julie Walker

How do you describe it who've and it's tough it's like i said it's definitely a buzz and i think by Hair on my arms standing up to be honest. It was a rush. I mean it was Definitely a while.

In welcoming seven-time kentucky derby winning trainer bob baffert trainer talk presented by facebook. Tipton bob appreciate the visit. And congratulations again. My friend thank you. It was just Exciting day Just unbelievable and just you know things work. I write all day long We had we had a tough friday but You know this business you just got to keep on going and things will change and I still you know. I'm still flying high. It was an an incredible incredible weekend. And i'm just so happy for all my connections all my people at work for me my crew to It was just a team effort. And it's unbelievable. You said you're still flying high. You're no stranger to this feeling you've experienced it six other ties previous. Does it take you awhile to come down off of this This rush well. This is different because you know when most of the time i go in there or sort of expected a little bit and this with this horse i just wasn't really i just didn't know if he was good enough and We were trying to figure out. How could we make them better. We had to find you. Know four lanes and But he'd been training so well and he was. He was looking at looking good and Bronx way And when he came into paddock he'd looked so good. You could just tell he was on it. He he is is hair is body. His body language really ticked me off factor. Two horses their body language out that they was him. And do your look unbelievable in the panic and so So you know that. I was so we thought we were gonna put on the lead and and just see how far it can take him and hope that his heart will take them. You know the the extra the extra yardage you know and so You know we left the gate. Everything was good around the turn. He was gonna gets bod. Johnny had him in a great spot and that was Standing in the pata. Usually i stand in the pag by myself but this year i was joined by head todd pletcher to my left his group and i had john sadler and the erroneous they were behind me so we were sort of in between and when the gay came open i heard john sadler say we got left. And so that's that's not good the kentucky derby horse like then all of a sudden We're on the lead and there's no rock your world so that's the thing about you. Need luck you gotta get away get need the trip to get away from there and we're gonna get spot and i saw the great horse soup sandwich. Was he'd be up there in down the backside. That's probably the first time that i felt pretty good because he was doing it. He was headed ears Just going back and forth. And actually i talked to. I was talking to the top pletcher afterwards. He said when he saw going down the backside he said you looked really live. That's when i first started looking like is he was enjoying themselves when a horse is out there just cruising along. But he wasn't going slow he's still went twenty three flat and forty six and change but the way he was doing and he was just doing. It really was a nice rhythm when you get a nice rhythm that that means they're breathing. Well nothing other. Just they're enjoying it Then when he turned for home. I saw mandolin. Bait looked like he was loaded behind us and when he lipped out outside. I thought oh here eat comes. 'cause i was really worried about mandolin. Bad loved his works. Coming up to of all the works men 'land-based works for like they were the they looked really really great and Then i see The great horse The godolphin horse coming save ritual quality. Since you're calling into always he's gonna lupus here. He comes you know and so in return for home. I was still not a believer. I i was late for those horses that come get us and And at the eighth pole he was still in there hanging in there tight and in fighting and the mandolin bay you could tell it was just having trouble. He just couldn't get them. And and the horse the central quality and hot rod charlie i. I wasn't sure that was hot. Rod charlie i know i was just watching the godolphin horse and until the sixteenth foale is when i thought. Wow a chance to win this. And you're just you're just saying please don't don't do all this hard work and just get beat on the wire i've been there too many. It's the worst feeling in for him to just kick in. I remember we were at last time at yard Just we were just screaming yelling. And and when he hit the wire it was just an unbelievable feeling that he did it and and beat those and there was a good race. I mean there was all four horse right there in line Because this here the derby was the it was hard to really separate them while they were so their forms. There are so close to each other and i've never seen it in a very but i just feel so blessed. It was just a really appreciate this one probably more so it felt like the the silver charm derby where you know. I was counting on the horse's heart and grit the in there. And that's that's what happened. You know he's but he's a pretty good horse. I mean he's a good guy and And he showed us something a dimension is knowing had an extra year And so it's just you know unbelievable feeling johnny again What a what. A strong great writer Got him.
Medina Spirit Wins the 147th Kentucky Derby
"And he did so from Churchill Downs where history was made at this year's Kentucky Derby trainer Bob Baffert winning his record 1/7. Run for the Roses effort, hadn't said much about Medina spirit and didn't expect to see many reporters around his bar and ahead of Derby. I'm sure I won't see you the rest of league, but I appreciate you guys coming by talking to me. Oh, you have to go back to the days when there's hardly anybody here. At the 15 to 1 colt changed the narrative with a half length win in the run for the Roses to give Baffert his seventh Kentucky Derby. The most in history came in under the radar, and I just know I want to come in here bragging or anything like that. You know, horsemen getting beat, you know, and so for him to win just happened, you know, so Heavily favored essential

"All day long. There was a little bit of buzz there in california. The the government officials have announced that beginning on april first outdoor stadiums can start having limited capacity. So i'd like to think that fan anita's going to piggyback on that. I think the the edict is in line with the opening a baseball season To oil to allow some limited Fans all. The you know with all the baseball teams in the state Between san francisco oakland anaheim. La and san diego Fans and i think santa anita. It's going to try and piggyback on on that so hopefully for senate you know i would. They haven't made any announcement yet. But that's i know they've been sort of letting the baseball teams be the the pulling guard and trying to follow them and hopefully for the santa derby it'll be the opportunity for some limited fans to be allowed in then so we'll we'll see how that all plays out but it's encouraging anyway j. I appreciate The monday recap and of course. When you look at that, you just look at the stat or whatever, but just to get that. It's it's the greatest feeling in the world and. In horse racing to watch your horse at the wire. Only about three minutes left before, we have to wrap it up and get to the commercial break Bob and I typically like to end by asking trainers. The let us know something that people might not know about them but I'm GonNa, do it differently here I'm going to ask you a question I wanna to know what it's like being Bob, baffert and I'll tell you what I mean by that celebrities athletes in the world thoroughbred racing you're Rockstar you can go anywhere people are GonNa know who you are but I'm curious if you go out to stores or restaurants or you're walking through the airport and there's people there do people outside of racing recognized Bob Baffert. Sometimes, you know when I'm in California that really but I'm in Kentucky it's you know ever- wherever I go there recognize me and. during I remember during the fair owns the triple crown. I'd be the go through an airport and people would say, aren't you? The? Horse Guy. And I've had a lot of people tell me that and look at me like you look familiar I. Get a lot of that. You know. I back in the day I. Remember some kid asked me if I was ric flair. That's been the biggest, the biggest think but. You know. In Kentucky that's the only time I'm probably a semi celebrity but It's you know people that you know it's it's makes me feel good because people are paying attention to horse racing and that's so important that we have these kinds of fans and they're you know and especially American Farrell American Farrell. A lot of people watched him and I got a lot of compliments you know I don't you don't know me I don't know you but that horse made me feel so that they watching him run so people they love like any sport you you'd love to watch the superstars for them. I'd always been a bit intimidated to walk up and talk to him and I did I waited for a good thirty minutes outside of his barn because he was on the phone I walked in I finally said I'm not waiting anymore walked into his barn at Santa Anita he was kicked back. His legs were up on his desk feet up on his desk and he was on the phone. And he looked at me. Put the phone down. He was just texting put the phone down and he said Hey. I love your show. Gary insisted on the seventeen 'cause he wanted to write him like thunder. Gulch who's GonNa stay outside and? And So we took the seventeen. And I remember. We. We went to get interviewed afterwards and the first question forget Jenny Rees. Asked me is Bob. You pick the seventeen bother you that there's never been a winner come out of post seventeen. And I remember answering her. I wouldn't known that. I pick seventeen and And they're still veneman a winner out having. And But It's things like that that you know I I knew I should've stuck with too but you know it was a weird raise. It was track was really fast at breaking track records. I remember I broke track record without allowing philly going six and a half the track was extremely fast. So you know the jockey started writing track sending everything hard and that's what happened. We had connery in there yet. Soccer prayer, he gets smoked away from their. Kandari and and and. Gary wanted to sort of stay close to them and I'll never forget. We came back in and. Point giving with just completely done at the. At the three eighths pole and I just couldn't understand it and later on You know Gary. That's one thing about Gary Stevens. That's what made him so great. Said boss I think he I think to marry I think he wants you let them fall away from there and pick it up i. you know I think that's the way run. He just got caught up Jason and. then. After that you know then he went one the next one and what when he went to Belmont it was just like I was just. It was I was sick. This is. This is the one you know, and maybe I'll never win the triple crown but But you know I've been fortunate to have all these good horses and you know there's been other horses probably could win the Derby that you know. Didn't have good racing luck. dislike Elliott Walden kept running second company in the Derby and then then he beats me triple crown. So you know. Things happen for reasons I've always thought that so I never looked back. Yeah. Well, as you mentioned that's one you'd like to have back and I'm sure that there are others. It's easier to remember the ones that don't win than the ones that do but look you don't get into the hall of fame and train more than three thousand winners without doing things. That are extraordinary and a lot of respect. So if you think about like golfers, we'll talk about the best shot they ever hit and Major League baseball players that the best swing they ever put on a ball that left the Ballpark, whatever it might be what's the best training job that Bob Baffert ever done with any horse? The best training job That's a that's a that's a tough one. I mean there's there there's been so many of them that I've really felt. That I Made Difference I don't know it's hard to say I would say. Like every member. Like. Any anytime you go to. You go across the pond. You know when you go to buy those are tough. Those are it's really to take silver charm over there. And to First Time to do by and and and go through that. Because you have no idea what you're up again and I think all of those Dubai Wins Pretty You know they're really just they're tough. You know and We're supposed to take a good horse but. You know horses like war emblem. He was just a rogue he was tough. And we had to make a lot of adjustments and I made a certain rig for a little lip court for them had stretched and and and I have different writer and we did something different with there and I think it made a big difference with him there. Little light horse. The only way I remember when we bought him like nine, hundred, ninety pounds. And We put the weight on within three weeks. He was up to a thousand seventy. You know he pulled it up, put it on without you know. Trained and without losing weight but I a Lotta horses there It's My my best jobs I think. I was in the corridors business. You know when I was trained quarterhorse bring these horses up to these big races. I like coming off a layoff. I think I think American. Pharaoh. Train them. After. He got beat in the in the Travers, train them up to the reader. Scout. You know really That was You know because he's coming off a be like that. And I almost didn't run in in the cup and he had been doing really well Toronto because they were they were thinking of retiring after you got be at the travelers. In, and there's another one I forgot about that I would love to have that one back. American Farrell he should never got beat In the into travelers but we just. got. Caught. Up In wasn't, GONNA run wasn't around I. Wasn't GonNa Rent I just didn't really prepare for it and when I got there we were just. A little bit overwhelmed with with everything that went on and I got them the day before you know we changed everything up and. and. He he he basically went way to fascinate before listen do it. I've never been overwhelming my life when I took him up there to Gallup when there was like fifteen, twenty, thousand people the grandstand it was crazy. But it was. It was really cool. But it was you know that I think that day was. We'd be ready for it now you know but I talked to your fellow hall of Famer Steve Asmussen last week and Steve's won more races than anybody. But Dale Baird spending credible and I asked him about winning the Kentucky Derby because that's one this just he hasn't been able to get over the hump and he's had seconds and thirds and some really good horses and just can't get past it and as a why is that so difficult to add to your resume and he said, well, it's the it's the premier race in in the world and it's so difficult to try to win this thing but you've done it five times how come you've had so much success in the derby what's what's allowed you to do it? Do you think? I mean I think Steve He's he's GonNa get it that he's GonNa..

"I join me on our trainer talk show back five years ago October twenty, ninth two, thousand fourteen. Now, of course, he's been on with me many many times since that date. But that was the last time he appeared on this particular show we sat down together at Santa. Anita's clockers corner just before breeders. Cup. That year and I remember that we visited for a full hour on that show never discussed any of his Kentucky Derby winners as a matter. Of fact, we barely touched on any of his top horses, and as you know, there have been plenty of those over the years. It was all about the early years of Bob's life his career and it was a fascinating visit at that time Bob had settled two, thousand, five, hundred and four winners which included three Derby winners today that total stands at three thousand fifty, one career victories five Kentucky Derby winners two triple crowns under his belt, fifteen breeders, Cup winners, and a multitude of major stakes victories to his credit. Bob. I gotTa tell you man not bad for a kid who grew up on a cattle ranch and no gallus raising chickens and selling eggs to the locals. It's been quite a journey and I never imagined ever was never a dream just. Just sort of fell in place but you know. It's Just fell in love with horses at a young age, my father loved horses and and that's why I. I got involved but because of him. And so he was busy raising Seven children. So I was lucky enough to you know to. Just keep going with it. Yeah. Luckily for us for the sport of thoroughbred racing your. Dad Bill loved horses and was a quarter horse guy had a couple of quarter horse mares. Didn't you tell me that the? The name of the First Horse that your dad had. There was baffert's Heller is that right? Yeah. His actually the first torch that he bred his name was baffert ballots. All O t and he's sent him to a trainer in Laredo Texas. I remember the horse went raise. There was a wind picture from Laredo and the second horses BAFFERT's ballot. He raised them there. There was a farm in Patagonia, which is like twenty minutes from Nogales. and. They stood a horse called Parker's trouble. He was an old quarter horse I think he's in the hall of fame for the steel full horse and he. And he read is marriage till and he got his is race horses and Back for Taylor I think he went a couple of raises their at Sonora. Arizona. Maybe, relate Oh and then we made a saddle horse out of them and and that's the thing that I learned how to ride on and so. He was tough. He was a he was a he was a quirky horse and every time I got on him I was like I wanted to say, I, was about twelve thirteen years old and he would He would try to bug me off. He knew when I was on I was sort of scared of him and it took me about six months until I family. You know. was able to to handle them. You know but I learned so much from that horse, he was beautiful horses and When you know. I'll never forget that that's how I learned everything about him and I remember letting them when I was gal around. I. Let him run one time and wow, would they were there so fast quarterhorse extremely fast you know and so it was quite quite experience. Yeah it's amazing that you know here you are. You grow up around quarter horses you make a living training quarter horses you make the Segue to thoroughbreds and all of a sudden you're training horses to go a mile and a quarter mile and a half in the Belmont stakes and having success at that level to how much different is it Bob Training a horse to sprint a quarter horse and then transitioning over to training courses like this to go you know the the marathon distances if you will. It was actually it it it it didn't happen overnight. It took me about a year to sort of figure it out Corridors has you know once you get him fit you get him running You don't have to train them as much. They don't. They don't go to the track every day. I. Would Gallop them like once every other day. Maybe, they'd go like when you know mile like five, eight, hundred Mile Gallop and. And we'd raise probably about every two weeks or something like that and want to get him running those trials. You rented trials five weeks part. You know you don't you don't do much in between, but they have to be really sounds unhealthy because courses you know the whole key is the break. And if they're not really if they don't break, then forget it you're gonNA, you're gonNA, get nothing you know and so they have to be they have to be really a fine line there has to be really sure. That they have to break well, and there's a lot of gates involved and you know make sure they stand up in there and that's why I've been a real with thoroughbreds. You. Know I'm really worried about the gate I do a lot of gates going I wanNa make sure my horses or behave themselves and they don't behave themselves in there. Really you know really bothers me but you want them to break and start so important. Visiting the hall of fame. Trainer. Bob. Baffert here on trainer talk presented by facing Tipton. Bob One when we did sit down at Santa. Anita. Five years ago you hadn't won a triple crown that you've now done that twice and I mentioned the Breeders Cup victories to your credit now. But there have been other moments. A Horse's like arrogate come to mind his tackler run that he had You know you're around game winner and and his special run that there were so many good horses that you've been part of Mackenzie recently when you describe what these past five years have been like for you and you talk to people that you're close with how do you do it? Well I mean it's I don't think about it too much. I guess you know every different day and I I don't really. Look back on anything. I just keep going like it's a new day. And so that's how I deal with it and You. Know I probably think I don't think about the winners as much as I I think I've got the ones that got away you know and what could I have done differently like when I have a good horse and he gets beaten a big race. beat myself up. What could I have done differently the. Why didn't he run his race? You know and that's the that's the thing I think about. What big race would you like to have back if you could do it over again I would love to have had the. Point given race back in Derby That would sorta got away from us like they have that one back. There's a lot of. Kevin Near. You know I mean looking at lucky that that race did the whole just got us. There you know and so you know a lot of 'em got away 'cause just bad racing but But the I think the point given raise really That's the one that really I thought I was so disappointed because they knew he had triple crown written all over him I just needed to get the first one that was overconfident. Andy that's used to pick our own our own spots are postition and I remember. They didn't shuffle the cards and they were pulling them out and that was the last one they pulled out. I think it was for TV or something but I remember right in order they were coming right in order like the cutting them in half. Happy. Just you know and so. He was the last one drawn and they would be it was between..

"Mean I said in the podcast is really good. And he's very hard to beat her and then she. She backed up with these. I'm excited to see how she performs next year. Even though the billionaire sprint vision convert turns superstars and Confession Fellow Fina. You'd be able to put together a whole year his year. She missed all the summer and only had two races in the ball before this race. So I think if she's able to put together a full year we could see a horse that could contend next year for billionaire sprint title. So now we're GONNA shipped out to the West Coast and lows baffert. Mito says they were saying on TV g with the the gray to futurity and the grade one starlet. I'm going to start with a few charity. And a Bob Baffert continues his run with this racist now. His twelfth victory his fifth consecutive dating back to two thousand fourteen. The horse that I thought was GONNA do well. Are The horse that I thought was going to win this race and turn into the eclipse champion. High-velocity didn't show up and it turned into a battle down the stretch with thousand words and Ano- door and those two gunned each other all the way through Anadarko by thousand words thousand came back and ended up getting the head Bob on the wire a lot of people love thousand words. I'm interested to see what your opinion on him is. I mean he has all the potential to be another great bob effort. You know three year old that that we see urine you're out in the pedigree and the connections.

"It It was just a positive activity. Here because Todd pletcher arrived as we were wrapping up with Baffert opport-. Frankly frankly I got the sense that he would have stayed another he would have stayed the rest of the show. Had there not been had had there not been a A specific assignment format at the top of the hour. But he tells me I don't know if he's perfected these stories. He's or if he just delivers them with a a certain aplomb but he told the historian of the first Dorsey bought a keeneland With thirty sloughs which was just wildly entertaining. Well Bob is when he gets it. Nobody's comfortable around you. He's got one hundred of those stories. Yeah and you know. He doesn't usually tell us. You know some guys have two stories. They tell the same two stories wherever they go. He's got one hundred stores and you might hear the same one twice and and it's It's pretty good. And and and when he come walking down the hall with his brother Bill who lives in Tucson here and I just Bob just told me that the other day and is man and I didn't know you live goes thank God. You didn't knocking on my door every day and I said yeah you're probably right but bills the same way. He's over the telling telling stories stories about those guys growing up and doing things so very gracious and they've said Todd came here a little bit ago. Ten fifteen minutes ago takes talking over there and I told some of the students earlier when as a you know Pop Africa. You Know Todd pletcher. Can you introduce us. I just show up in the morning I believe me. They're fine. They they used to be you they get it so group of seven eight nine kids are over here and when Bob got off and todd was here you know they chitchatted get chatting over there a little bit and You know some little starstruck but but you know. Hey these guys started in school just like you did and you know you can move right up the ladder but So gracious enough. Not just to be here to do the little interview with you. But now they're in on On stage they're doing a little Oprah couch session just chit chatting Just like they were with Yo so Like I say when you come to these things over to the public you could be sitting there in the audience and listen so a very very entertaining. It's not all business here so like to show some of the lighter side of the business. Show that that these guys. Yeah they go to work every day. They trade a Lotta horses. They deal with a lot of different people. But they're just regular guys and that's what you're gonNA see. That's what the people are going to see in the room in there. He told he told a racing secretary story from Los Owl that I've never heard curly Smith. He is to be from what I understand the toughest raising secretary on record bar. Non Anywhere knew every horse on the grounds and what everybody knew everything about everybody he he said he told the story. The Guy who the guy a left the shed left the light on in the Tack Room and apparently Smith would go around the barns every night he made he made the trainer unscrew the lightbulbs out of the tack room and bring it to his office every afternoon. And then come pick it up the next day for a week stores my good friend. Bruce Jackson who trained quarterback reverses over there before of any test name before he transferred over to read gave. He used to tell me stories about curly Smith and still does and I didn't believe him at first. And then I'd start getting a little few backup stories around the corner but I believe right in other words. You're not wasting electricity. Unless you need that ball you'd leave it with me and if I didn't know the background up the essence but oh my God made me laugh but their stories about this guy You know if you brought a horse in if you had nine stalls and you brought that tenth horse and he knew it any would literally put you on the Horse until you to ride it out the gate. I mean I've heard all kinds of they never met the guy quite a legend quarterhorse guests. Redoubt Alameda now. And you know every time everytime baffert brings up Brad McKenzie. Just he you know. He says he says he's tender As as as As anybody you know when their talks about his dad talks about the chief and reverential about you you know the icons of of the training game and absolutely did and as I was talking to Bill Phillips tells stories about you know not nicely growing up at but recently and the name Brad. McKenzie was sprinkled throughout stories about. Oh Brad did this when Brad was here so it. Ah The guys. Are you know just tight as tight as you can ever get. I know Bob is really really happy. That the they pick like the right horse they picked a good horse. True horse you know but champion Type A horse to name after after Brad and just go out and perform and do great so I mean mean he lost a good buddy. What else can you say exactly exactly well it it? It got very quiet here. Because everybody's in listening to Bob. Avin todd so the kids are in there so we can't do anything with the kids right this minute. We've got one over in the wings over here Matthew..

"I said Yeah you better be ready to work seven days a week and just live live. Live and breathe it. That's all if you want to be successful you gotta live and breathe because not only you're responsible for all those horses versus but you're responsible for a lot of employees families that count on you. That's a lot of pressure like this winter when we were having problems out there SANITA. Yeah that was one of the big things that you know. If this isn't workout I got a lot of families that are counting on me and you know they just can't pick up no go. Oh or whatever and they've been with me for you know twenty twenty years and seeing all the kids grow up so there's a lot of extra pressure that you know that that that people don't know about you but So but it's been very you know I. I'm so lucky that work down you know. I'm glad that my grandmother let me that thousand dollars. I don't know what would happen if she didn't give me the the money but but it was as you never things happen for a reason it's one of the you know it's one of the things about the game that you know. There's there's a certain degree of locked that That it just as is out there to be to be captured and I suppose some of it. Some of it is is just knowing just being relaxed and as you as you've discussed before I mean just Adjusting how you you always talk about making decisions with horses during the run-up On the classic trail and just making those decisions on feel I remember when I was when I was like sixteen this Wayne Look is comes into scenario with these shiny trailers. These fancy voices to run in the trials okay and we all went up to the fence ago. Everybody was saying that's Wayne Lukas. Man That's guy it's light light and I wanted to go up and introduce mice. I was scared to de. ooh I was like That's him and I got it close. Look I'm watching him man but this he's just he is like you not only is he. He's a great horse Horseman and Horse Trainer He's great horsemen but he was a good showman and he knew how to For for the better he knew how to promote the sport he really. And when he when he came into the corridors business. He changed the course. I mean he the Barnes all of a sudden he had had the most beautiful barnes and the flowers in there and stuff. Rake at the herringbone tendency a herringbone Rig that's Wayne Lucas and people that try what is gold toe to toe with and they went and broke. They couldn't they couldn't stay up because he kept winning. And then when he came thoroughbreds he changed at all and During the process he sort of rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and they you know and so you know the thing about Wayne he was never really when you come from the corridors and just jumped in there he it was really totally never accepted fully. When you come for the hard boots and because he didn't come up from you know they they think a lot of the you know the trainers are You know come in like you know the typical trainers supposed to look like Leroy Jolly lovely. I get get to know him last year and I just love what I totally right when I saw him. I said when I see you Leroy. I'm intimidated 'cause to me. Leroy was above me because I watched him. I think he was great trainer. And all these guys and I see 'em brea and those guys like I would never consider myself at their their level to me. They're still above me. Union means so when you see these guys when you're growing up on television you know like And last I used to pick your arraign these older guys. And that's what I did. I tell you it's helped me and I tell my kids. You gotta be very curious in life absolutely and you have solutions and we rented a long day. We they're calling for you. They're calling for me right. Steve but I got your worn out. Todd pletcher showed up. They told me he wouldn't show why. Why not Actually taught actually graduate in four years. It took me six. All right. Enjoy it you was fabulous. Thank you as always unbelievable Bob Baffert. Let's take a break. I'm digging it. I'm sorry I didn't dig into everybody's time with the kids and Let's let's take a break hammer's coming right back and we're going to get some kids on and we're GONNA get sick Fernando in for a visit and he's going to explain about the you know how how to get into the pedigree side of you know if you're young person and you want to work for a farm you WANNA work on the sales and you WanNa work and signer Sydell talk about that and how you know we we. We know how the horse side works and probably a lot of the business side track operators and so forth but that's an in area and and when we were here last year You know there was. I think I think it all the time we've been coming only been one Of the students students that had expressed bloodstock interest now. A now I've been introduced to two or three more and so we'll get sit in for that to a A lot of fun. How about that story and delivered delivered perfectly baffert about thirty sluice because everybody was saying the horse become anything? WHO's the horse at thirty slows? That was great back after this to symposium apple races with feedback on Sirius. Xm radio the home at the tracker on the go express bed is your way to play. The races express provides it's.

"Job of uh aggregate from bob baffert than i have with american farrow and i say that i turned out to take anything away from the training job american fair incredible but i just feel like baffert for a number of years within a position where he would sort of aggressively put horses through program with seemingly the only goals being the triple crown races and it seems like for the for the various qualities they recognised in arrogate that he was pointed to this late bloomer campaign and you know there are you know maybe i'm wrong but i almost feel like the old baffert might have put the screws to this horse try to push push things a little bit earlier and by not doing that has unleashed his east on the racing world and it just makes me it makes me very happy to see a horse handled like this you know i'm one of the people who has argued at times uh that the triple crown is is great as it is in so many ways than out it's one of the things in racing that really works i get all that but there have been times in my life where i felt like it was this glass ceiling in a way for the sport because of how everything being focused on that didn't allow four horses like arrogant at pointlead seif ed to see a horse be able to achieve these heights with the signature winning the travers being the arrival on the scene there's just something there's something super cool about that.
