It is just completely an absentee landlord, you know, occupying The White House with no ideas, no innovation, no foreign policy, no national security, no idea about infrastructure and manufacturing and completely destroying lives across this country of the hardworking Americans, the middle class who truly love this country that stand for the flag that stand for choice and education that stand for not forcing vaccinations upon people and ruining their lives and that's why the work that you're doing is so important and I want to be one of those active voices as I have in the past and at all your events to stand for the people that believe in what we believe in.

'Knock at the Cabin' knocks off 'Avatar' at the box office

Examining Biden's Chip Ban
"Let's kick it off with some Biden chip band, give me the lay of the land for this story. Definitely important for a lot of people in electronic space. Yeah, I think the Biden administration part of their strategy is they want to keep their semiconductors at home. So this story essentially came out to where they unveiled part of their strategy and the key points are that they kind of want the semiconductor industry workers to come home that are currently working in China. And then they don't want to send the cutting edge chips, those 5 nanometer 7 nanometer chips over to China. And so if you think about impact on the Bitcoin mining space, it could be that manufacturers in China can't get their chips and maybe produce as much. But I know you have some color on this one, so I'm going to send it back over to you. Yeah, first seeing a story you're like, oh, this is not good for the asic industry because a lot of asic manufacturers were formerly very centralized in China, but luckily it has changed over the last two years, pretty drastically. So we have bitmain and we have micro BT, those make up probably 90% of the asic marketplace, maybe even a little bit more. And both of those teams work through different foundries to procure their chips, notably TSMC, which is based out of Taiwan with bitmain, and then Samsung for micro BT, which is located in South Korea. A lot of the machines were then assembled in China, especially in Shanghai and those sort of areas. But it's not really the case anymore. Luckily bit main and micro BT really saw through this a while ago, made some strategic moves. A lot of both their operations are actually now based in Malaysia and Indonesia. A few other locations in Southeast Asia. That's where they're putting these machines together. So if you get an asic nowadays, that's commonly where it's manufactured.

I'm sure you did too Regina. Oh yes, definitely. Well, before we go, I did want to ask you both one last question since we're talking about BTS BTS has been in the news a lot about taking this break. J-Hope is headlining Lollapalooza this summer and releasing a solo album so that kind of seems like the next chapter for BTS is gonna be maybe unveiling more solo projects. What are you two hoping is next for BTS and for its members? I mean, personally, I would love to see each BTS member do collaborations with Korean indie artists and singer songwriters. And like I know that BTS has done such collaborations in the past and partly thanks to those collaborations, like many people around the world, especially members of the army, have come to discover all these talented Korean artists that are popular and well respected in Korea, but not as well known outside of Korea. And so, you know, I hope that the various BTS members will continue to do those types of collaborations because obviously there are so many different kinds of music in Korea, you know, there's like their ballots, there's folk rock, punk rock, rap, trot, like you name it, like Korea has it all, but I think a lot of Americans tend to forget that sometimes. And I feel like western media and mainstream western audiences, like tend to overly focus on idle KPop and I mean, frankly, many Koreans nowadays don't even listen to idle KPop. And so I think BTS just through their sheer star power could help introduce some of these other Korean artists to a broader audience. And also, it sounded like sometimes they had to sacrifice their own individual hopes because they always had to put the interests of the group first. So I hope that each member will be able to take this time to recharge and just do the things that he has always wanted to do. I want for them to make the music that they feel like they want to put out into the world. They want to put out into the world and to be able to spend a little bit less time outside of the public eye of feeling like they need to be churning out new content constantly and to know that they've given their fans so much music that they can constantly go back to. And that they can really take this time to release what they want to to collaborate with whom they want to. I hope that fans can just support them while they do that. Yeah, I just think there's such an impulse to strike while the iron's hot. And you can imagine the pressures on them to generate content, right? Like while they're the biggest band in the world. And I'm delighted, frankly, to see them able to prioritize their mental health, which if you're a fan of the group, you want your favorite group to prioritize its mental health, not only because they're human beings and you root for them as human beings, but because breaks are good for artists, breaks are good for everybody. Everybody needs it. And I hope they actually get to take some time off instead of just shifting to cranking out solo projects at the same pace that they've been cranking out group projects. "For days stop running for nothing my Friends the song doesn't assume that young people are listeners are lazy or aimless and in need of discipline. It tells them that running is not an inherently virtuous activity and that it's okay to stop for a moment and to just appreciate the moment where they are. Whether they're feeling happy or sad and it tells them that they're not defined by the dreams they do or don't have that simply existing and appreciating your existence can be enough. I really like that song too and something that you see in a lot of both Korean songs as well as K dramas that are being made nowadays is a lot of them touch on this idea of South Korea being a super competitive society. And so I think through this song, like BTS is also reminding people in their home country that they don't have to feel pressure to do what everyone else around them is doing. They don't have to go through that same pressure cooker. I love that. So obviously, we can't be completely comprehensive here, BTS has a huge catalog. But we did want to get a couple more highlights in Regina, why don't you give us your last pick? Yeah, so my last pick is also known as how to wrap. And it's from BTS's second album. Oh, are you late to that came out in 2013? And I'd say it's probably their most quote unquote Korean song because the meaning of the nuances of the song can be a bit hard to understand if you're not Korean. So to start off, just breaking down the song's title Pythagorean. So pi means a dough means province, Kong means river and sun means mountain. So if you take all of that, it literally translates to all the rivers and mountains of the 8 provinces of Korea. And it's sometimes used as a fancy way of referring to Korea as a beautiful country. And other times it's simply used when you're talking about Korea as a whole. And the alternative title for this song is how to wrap and I would say that's probably a more representative title for the song because talk to the means dialect and Korean. And the whole song is basically this fun and hilarious rap battle between the BTS members who are singing and rapping in their regional dialects. My mind what I had on my mind but I kind of hope so in this song you hear a BTS mention some of the provinces in the refrain. You also get to hear BTS mentioned some regional stereotypes that a lot of Koreans are familiar with. So for example, there's a saying that men from kyung song province tend to be manly and handsome and some people say that people from tola province have a very friendly way of talking. Obviously these are just stereotypes and there are many Koreans out there who disagree with either or both of these stereotypes. And then later in the song you have RM who is the leader of BTS and he basically comes in and says something along the lines of like, hey, you country bumpkins, like, okay, these dialects may be cool, but having a sole accent is still the standard way of speaking Korean. And that's a story much I pay will die. This had to be got the birth city diamond to the inch of our gas into the demons. And to understand where he's coming from, you have to know that soul is very much the political economic and cultural capital of South Korea. I mean, to Koreans, it is essentially like Washington, D.C., New York, LA, and San Francisco all rolled into one. And generally speaking, people from Seoul are considered to be more sophisticated than people from other parts of Korea. And that's partly because they speak with the sole accent and it's kind of like how a lot of Americans feel like people with a British accent sound smarter. And so starts off sounding like a bit elitist, but then his tone suddenly shifts in this song and kind of like starts acting as a peacemaker and then he ends this part by saying like why keep fighting went in the end it's all the same Korean language. And he basically says that, you know, we're all like one Korea under the same sky. And although we may have different dialects, at least we can all understand each other. I love just being able to delve into these songs a little bit and just hearing some of the meanings behind them because a lot of the songs that have really hooked me into BTS as an American fan has been songs like dynamite and butter, which as incredibly catchy as they are. If you break down the lyrics, the lyrics are basically just lists of hashtags. That sounds accurate. It's like a lot of slogans kind of strung together and they're so impeccably catchy and I love those songs. Do not get me wrong, but they don't necessarily feel like they're infused with a ton of much deeper meaning. And so it's really fun to hear you guys talk about these songs and understand how much thought is put into them and how much meaning they have for people beyond just how catchy they are, which they are still very, very catchy. I know your last pick is meaningful and catchy once you hit me with it. The song that I picked to end on is called disease or that's the English translation E so disease. And this is a more recent song from their album B, which is their largely self written self produced album that actually wasn't supposed to exist. It only exists because the pandemic happened. The song and the album are steeped in the emotional turmoil of the pandemic. They're very attuned to the sense of loss and claustrophobia and anxiety that so many people were feeling. And many people are still feeling. And in particular, the song is about the disease of overwork and of being forced to rest and to do nothing and hating it, and then pathologizing the fact that you don't want to stop working. And I think disease is one of the all time great OT 7 songs and OT 7 just means that all 7 of the members are on the song. As opposed to their subunit or solo songs, and I think each member really shines in the style that most suits him, both the rap line and the vocal line, do some of their best and most dynamic work on the song. The song has so much energy and it's the kind of track that I hope BTS wants to make more of. Whenever they decide to make music again, as a group of 7, I think it really shows what they're capable of as a septet and there aren't too many voices or sounds in the mix and they really achieve this balance and harmony. It just sounds very them. Which is to say that the song is very playful, serious, sincere, and also cool. Awesome when I'm ready to draw if she can be at all the lobby they were born we could get trouble goodbye to Narnia.

"Girl yeah, it's interesting talking about the lyric translation videos and how important it is, I think, for BTS fans to share the translations of these songs. You know, I produced a BTS tiny desk concert a couple years ago. And just the outpouring from fans of the group, not only like appreciating that video, but wanting translations, asking us to make sure that we were posting translations because it was very, very important for fans of the group that casual observers know what those songs meant that they weren't just pretty songs, or they weren't just catchy songs. They were songs that were infused with a lot of meaning. I think a lot of armies have songs like that that trigger something within them, whether or not they understand the lyrics. And I'm really happy you're here to talk about the lyrics Regina. And that Steven, you mentioned the outpouring of demand for things to be translated because, I mean, this is really what I think BTS fans do is some casual observers or listeners might not care, but when you become a fan of them, you really do deep dives into their lyrics. And listening to BTS song as a non Korean speaker requires a lot of humility, but also like a desire to learn. And I think it's something that really bonds people together is just being able to share that experience. Yeah, wonderful point. All right, lenica, give us give us your next pick? Yes, so my next pick is Paradise, which is from what I would consider their masterpiece of an album, love yourself tear, which came out in 2018. And I chose this song because it has the rare distinction of being one of the few Korean songs BTS has never performed live. So this is a true deep cut. And because army loves an underdog, this is one of the most beloved songs I would say of the fandom. It's an underappreciated gem. And I wanted to just discuss Paradise because lyrically it offers an interesting and instructive contrast to run. It sounds very fresh and upbeat and it builds to this ending where they're all kind of chanting, singing

That break presses pause on a discography that's farther reaching than casual fans might think. So we thought now would be a good time to showcase some of the discoveries in the BTS catalog. I'm Steven Thompson, and today we are talking about BTS deep cuts on pop culture happy hour from NPR. I'm glad to be here. It's great to have you and making her pop culture happy hour debut is Regina Kim. She's an entertainment writer focusing on Korean pop culture. Welcome to the show Regina. Hi, thanks for having me. Oh, it is a pleasure. So a couple of quick clarifications upfront, BTS has recorded a lot of songs in its 9 year history, so there's no way to really be exhaustive here. Also, when we say that BTS is taking a break, no one is entirely sure what that means. The group is not calling this a breakup or a hiatus, just an opportunity for its members to work on other projects for a while. J-Hope, for example, is set to release a solo album on Friday. BTS management company just signed a streaming deal with Disney that will include a concert film and a docu series. So it's fair to consider the BTS catalog of work in progress. Now, that said, we did want to provide a deeper look into the BTS archives. I consider myself a casual fan of BTS. I love dynamite and butter and spring day and other songs U.S. fans commonly associate with BTS, but I've never seen one of their concerts in person, and I haven't dug deep into their discography, so we recruited a couple of experts who might help fans like me dig deeper. Regina Kim, I'm going to start with you. Give me a BTS deep cut. Yeah, so the first song that I want to talk about is called and the title of the song and panman is actually the name of a Japanese cartoon character that was created by this author named Takashi yanase. And the character first appeared in children's picture books in the 1970s, and then it was later adapted into an enemy series that became super popular among children in Japan. And Anthony was also popular in Korea in the 1990s, although in Korea they called him hook bagman, but Anton man is a very unconventional superhero. His face is literally a rum pastry ball filled with sweet red bean paste. And the Japanese call this pastry on pond hence the name on panman. I'm pun is really delicious. I highly recommend trying it if you haven't yet. So good. Yeah. And what I'm planning on basically does is he helps people in need by breaking off pieces of his face for them to eat. And he's highly vulnerable. He becomes very weak if anything happens to his head. So for example, if people eat parts of it, he gets weak, and so because of all this, he's called the world's weakest superhero. I love it. But, you know, he has a very big heart and he's also very kind and brave and giving. And so this whole Anton mon series is about teaching kids to help others. And so I think it's very telling that in this song, BTS chose to compare themselves not to Superman or to Spider-Man, but to anpanman, the world's weakest superhero. BTS is essentially saying that, you know, similar to Anthony, like all they have to offer is their music. But they believe that they can still provide people with strength and hope through their music. And they're also telling us that, you know, we

So i think The traditional sense of popular radio music is really the base on that idea in a traditional media. Play promotion the connection between station the magazines in Media people but right now for instance butter and the popular bts hugely boosted and supported by fans. And they're really voluntary purchase of song downloading songs streaming songs. They almost forced everyone to pay attention to this group. And that's was kinda intentional choice for them to make their favorite group b. s. You know to have a presence in the in the mainstream market which never really paid attention to the foreign music who sing in the foreign language. Now which has definitely has a huge disadvantage in radio. Station radio play but again. What's the popularity. I mean you. You definitely have different types of You know success in the pop music. You can have a really catchy easy song to to the general audience but you got to. So i think those are different ideas of the success of music. So i mean i definitely understand what they're trying to say but i think for me personally i think is old fashioned idea. 'cause i'm traditionally. We didn't really care about nobody. Really pay attention to the to the media play and all this power things like payola and things like that you know but all of a sudden they start to pay attention to the fans streaming and the voluntarily. Bts's the most significant pop act in the history of korean popular music. Is that something you believe in in in some ways. Maybe it's obvious but maybe you could just briefly explain why it's not just about music to whole presence and the whole like wave. They're making right now in the history of chrome pop music. We always believed that is just the local music in the music. For korean people or create american people will korean people living in foreign countries. Seven man pop group from south korea with three rappers and four singers all ridiculously good dancers and no one has achieved anything like what they've achieved. No group from south korea or anywhere in asia as had anywhere the kind of success that bcs has had in the us and markets. They are under third number one single in the united states. The new one is called butter and the second english language single from them. And it's very much in the vein of dynamite. The previous english language single. But it's got a charm all tone. It's great but these english language singles if it's all you know about really only scratched the surface. There's so much more to them. There's a lot of depth there. I would definitely recommend checking out my interviews if you get a chance but today. I also wanted to talk to young kim who wrote a book called. Bt s the review. He is a seoul based music critic and musicologist. He actually as he came to the states to get a phd in musicology and he's been covering crean music since the late nineties. And he wrote the first book ever about hip hop in south korea and so we had a pretty in depth conversation about bt s and a little bit about the history of pop music in south korea and hip hop and south korea. The conversation started off with young. Kim explaining when he first heard about bt s back in two thousand thirteen well honestly. I sense the significance of or more. Broadly this new format hip hop idol. In k pop would be a something important in a lot of ways. I mean that's was two thousand twelve. I guess or thirteen. I heard about the group. Actually maybe it was just a prototype. I i don't think it just just the same group as is now. But i heard from my colleague that producer punk shijo is preparing a new group largely based on hip hop but the format will be capable so i thought that was interesting idea in a lot of ways first of all i actually well like i said earlier. I was deeply interested in korean hip hop scene from leon and i happen to write a book about korean hip hop for the first time in south korea which is hungary pop your that. She translating current hip hop the footsteps the passion. That was two thousand six and the reason i wrote. That book actually was the fear. You know the concern that i had at the time i thought honestly the crew and hip hop was dying at the time around two thousand five two thousand six but you know then several years past and i heard from my colleague about the group yes and i thought that was really weird but at the same time we really fascinating idea combining hip hop and pop idol capable idol format because for me k. Pop was still is all about. You know heavy production control management you know the forging talent fostering talent. You know at the same time but for me hip hop like you know it's all about representation. I mean it's it's about identity about who you are will you from who or what you representing. Well at the time. I heard the news about you know the glue. Pta's i thought you would be complete game changer or up. Total disaster honestly then. I saw their name. Because i was in the united states in the all these like the ups and downs and success and treatment of k pop in the us. Us market for instance. I can them style and other boy bands in grow groups. I saw their name on the list of the show call k. Con is the biggest k pop festival in the us by cj entertainment right. Yeah so. I was just instantly intrigued by the idea and the group because at the time were they're not the only hip hop buydell. Actually we had big bang block. B b p. They're all great. They really had their own career and their own moment and big bang was actually probably the most well known k pop group at the time alone with Super junior and exo and shiny. So well. So i kind of carefully. Monitored the group's career from two thousand thirteen. But i mean from from the very first moment. I saw them in person i mean i. I didn't have any like a chance of doing interview. Or what but i. When i first watched their performance and a k khan and watch the fan and the really small but devoted fans just to say manage day. They still have these days. I was so mass memorized. So shocked by the power of phantoms. In the an idea of these fans had saying that. Bts's to thin or something different from pre existing capable idols. So i i was instantly hooked by the group itself and the music and And the fan reaction as you well know. Army is not as his fans are known these days. Many don't like to put s in the k pop category. An and the group themselves have complicated feelings about that. When i talked to him about that he he said ultimately it doesn't matter but he didn't really endorse. Bts is part of k pop the idea sort of that their own genre. Which i think there's there's an argument for that said historically i think to understand where they came from. You have to look a little bit at the state of k pop and it's very significant. Of course that what big hit. Which is their agency their label and is now part of. It became this giant public company. Hi was at the time of their debut in two thousand thirteen was this tiny startup in an industry dominated by big companies. So maybe you could kind of just explain all that for minute. What the landscape look like in two thousand thirteen and why. It was a struggle to come from this the startup for them. Yeah first of all the discussion. The cape hop in bts being not k pop or something something like that well. I think it's the confusion is there because the word k. Pob doesn't really mean anything except for the fact k. Pop is korean popular music but the thing is it's a kind word that people used from outsiders point of view because we i mean before two thousand two thousand. We korean cringe analyst. People really didn't have to call a cape up. yeah i'll music is a type of industry but k up. It was just a just a word that the foreign journalist started to us you know naming after the war j pop because they are already familiar with the idea of j pop but the the thing is the first music or the music that was popular at the time was idle music or worse something similar so it really made that kind of confusion. That k pop is all about idle music. Even though the word. K pop doesn't really mean something about idol. Was something like that. That confusion actually made people like me or that. They really felt they have to distinguish themselves from the idea of k pop but technically capable is just korean popular music but the problem is the usage. Know it's not the definition. Yeah i mean. That's that's i wanted to point out producer. Punk rock will formerly a really talented composer producer in jail. Ip he already had a great career as a composer but he said he'd felt that. There's gotta be something else. Beyond these like k pop idol format or formula. It can be idle music but it can be different. That's his idea. But i think it's it's really associated with the more more genuine authentic artistry still based on idol format and a lot of really amazing narrative than stories so round the time has made debut. Yes there are three giants. You mentioned that ba kit high right now but be kit at the time was really small company really small company and actually they pro. The show was really desperate at the time. 'cause i mean it was almost the end of his. Actually kind of the company was actually dying at the time because they didn't really make any substantial success. So be the groupie says even though the idea was really in revolutionary and really the the musical day had their own group talent like composers and arranger in the puncture himself is amazing some riders so they had talent but they didn't have any like resources like money or promoters in some slack that power so it was hard competition and Not many people probably. Nobody actually believed that batista's from became would be our next big thing and the situation remained premature. Same up until two thousand seventeen. I guess When bts one the first social top social artist category at the billboard music award and the appeared for the first time at the american music awards show which really boosted their popularity back in south korea to pay attention to the group for years after their debut was fascinated to learn that.

"I when i first met best. She was writing for short play night in london and there was one where it was like. She did every quarter whenever the show was on and she got an email saying hi yet. I'm just so you know like the deadline was meant to be today. A hunger your script. Your eyes seemed you're writing wanted. Do you want to be in. And she'd be like oh. Yeah yeah. I've got one and she wrote it there on the train and send it would be like one of the biggest loss of the night but once she's got an idea and our head getting the idea going takes a while but then getting it onto paper just like boom. Yeah but then it changes it changes and morphs and yeah. Oh yeah yeah. That's what i've seen a lot of a lot of writing stages and sometimes i do get writer's block. I'm not one of those people who can sit down. I am in the morning and then up five have written ten thousand words. I sometimes can't write anything for a really long time. And then sometimes i'm like pow his a series and you get up at eight. Am to no. i have. I have friends who do and i am a mixture of astounded and horrified by them.
