I haven't had a drink in six weeks and then six maybe even longer and then the other night I decided to have a cafe patrol. Because I ended up my friends that's. I know exactly but you are joining me before we go off on a major you joining me for an episode of Feel Good Habits, which is the franchise or the series only Magan show where I quiz my guess about the tips, strategies and techniques, they use to stop bad data heading into a bad week. Stop getting out of the bed the wrong side turning into ruining every day as whether your own those sorts of things and also. Let's face it. It can be a bit deeper and you are. Pure, joy. As a friend but also as somebody that I am lucky enough and I know lots of people lucky enough to engage with on the Internet viral instagram you just put out nothing but good thoughts. And feelings kid thank you. You know about I just I like living each day plus Ignited your knife is GonNa, come to a close I. Know that's so grim but I, liked to enjoy life and I think it's really important to try and use my platforms to spread joy and just biftek WanNa because life is tough it's hard work and actually it's just remember the beauty of life and it's to half feel-good smile and Laugh Day. That needs to be a t-shirt gills. I know I do actually need a PA to just stay with me at all times taking votes. That's a Hashtag. If you're available send Jesse. Rhonda she'd be. Efficient. I reckon would work in a chip here the weekends and I wouldn't have a problem with it. Oh, I actually. I had a craving fish and chips last night. How funny that you say that? It's the universe telling me to go up the road and get myself. Some cutting chip's GonNa have to talk source in the right. You gotTa have everything right to go with it. You can't just Have to prepare. I, think. Oh listen. This is a banal chippy Attica. Different show. All you need to know is plenty of salt plenty of vinegar and don't mess with them scraps. That's how it goes. Yes. Yeah. True. So I'm guessing you've got some flipping excellent feel good habits. So I think the first one I actually want to put down. It's not something that I've written but you jogged my memory now is a good habit is. When you get out of bed in the morning I, really truly believe that how you start your day will massively impact the rest of your day and I know that that's this very common Skill. If you make the bed those who make the bed, we'll have a more productive day on. It's something that I really try and disciplined myself in the moment I wake up I'll wake up and I'll stay on instagram and go through my DM's which for me is compartmentalized as an hour. Before out bed so then I have an hour after that and I make empty the dishwasher maybe claim a kitchen before dressed might do a little bit of a workout with something and then I, started my day right now what that does is it puts me on a really Positive, productive mental state of mind if I don't do one of those if I lie in bed if I mess Abou-. Than sometimes my diet can unravel and then it got straits with myself, and then I know that I I know that I can stop being mean and it's just not worth it. So feel good habit number wall I think his start your day rhines and from the moment you get up start doing nice things. So I'll combine actually with this other one I've written down is exercise has feel good habit.

"Well anyway. We're talking to Dennis Beira. Who IS An auto worker in Flint Michigan. And he's telling us a little bit about you just began the story about how and started working for General Motors. What year was that this Nineteen seventy seven and then and then there You got some help by community organization so seen it with the Spanish speaking Information Center. And then you began to work at the road. General Motors silly which is an auto parts plant and they have a plating operation there right. They did at the time they played it made chrome and so forth from there. You just mentioned the word Autos Gypsy and that has special meaning to auto workers throughout the Midwest. Just been not very well recorded by the news media and I think people would. Would you know listening to this art? That weren't means in reality. So why don't you explain to us a little bit about what you mean by Our worker I don't think it really matters which major company worked for there's always be downturns in carbine industry. Saw that happen you get laid off and there's another type of Kharian selling better. You could end up being transferred to those other plants so as example. I can give you this last song. I worked at Gold Lansing Grand River forms. The lake or in some ways okay. Well let's go back and sequence survey understand so you worked at at the General Motors poll on a road and then something happened in. They called me one day instead. You want US General Motors. You've gotta go work someplace else. Yes correct I got laid off and and was offered a little bit and then I got picked up the Buick plant that would be in flint. Yes and then I was there for about seven months laid off there and I got called back to the Cole Road. So they sing back where he started. And then what was your job? Classification A Kuwata road plant. I was the call equipment cleaning equipment. Equipment Cleaner Okay and then and then and then you you went back to go wire road and then what happened to you It worked there for about another year and a half two years in it goes in the eighties. Things weren't all that great. I got laid off there. I went to view and again. That's the second time you went back. Immune sin I worked there till like might have been like eighty two and was laid off while almost me think about time for time and nature laid off as long as you've worked. Yeah ever worked for General Motors and then at that point it cash out and you do. You don't have jobs were right. Yeah let you off they. Are you back to start on day? One I was lucky and heads. Renzo worked with got called Lake or in the summer when they. I note that plant and help them. I was down there on August. I acquired the local unions and they got me down a lake. Orion and I started working here in eighty four and I worked there quite some time in production for probably fifteen years then. I moved into skilled trades. Human no right no rights. Lear skilled trades of course got paid more. Yeah in the little more job security. I hope the time that had would. It's it's better than the production marker so so once you went to Lake oriented and and you've got you know you had to get educated and take an apprenticeship to get that job. What happened after that? Just gotten a journeyman scarred. Skill trade is since the then there is a planet that openness lead down seven days twelve hours of juryman scarred about two weeks afterwards they the back on all the trades a transition once again. What selling what we were building in our plant was selling Solo. You any business. They come back when they're not selling a product. Then the actor you after time. Did you switch where he worked from late oriented some other place? Yeah there was a couple times It was two thousand eleven got laid off And it was laid off for like three weeks and the flip truck and bus Paul and in fact they call all skilled trades were laid off from Lake far enough in the call him in to work at truck plant but it was an auction. We all went young. I was airport two years almost two years. Lake Orange Balzac longer now called back the League Corey about another year to once again got laid off because they were down to one ship just building which the sonic we were transitioning from building the sonic to the cards out. There now called the ball on all electric the electric card. Chevrolet and then and then So you're back at league oriented and then that ran out to I take it again. Yeah they drop down to one shift in the hold saw. They laid me off. And then. Where'd you go after that? They offered me to go to Hamtramck or lancing. I went to Land Amtrak being in in in the Detroit area and so you decide to go to lansing and work. Yeah the the drive hamtramck would probably then muttered fifteen miles farther than going to lansing. How your your Commute Lake Gory? Hammer to land. Should both yeah? We didn't really talk about that for one and one of the characteristics of Gypsy as they have to drive on distances to work at their new place of appointment otherwise. Sell Your House move close right. Yeah my by Dr Lake. Orange about fifty miles fifty five miles a day a day. You know one way see. You spent two hours on the road at least yup no doubt and then until Lansing I assume about the same same length or little bit more where I'm living. It's about the event which rod gate grab anywhere from seeking by December mile to get there so your your lifestyle. There becomes as an auto worker gets caught up with the economy of the area. And so you really have a hard time been laid off so many times. That back at it probably got used to the anxiety. Stability instability doesn't really stress me out as much as it used to but It's still there. Tend to get out of debt and soon as you get out of debt. And they're making a little bit headway as far as savings. Go have another shock. Wave Come at you at have a little bit saved up are you. Don't make it through so Dennis your Your lifestyle than his is greatly impacted. Not just by the commute but by the insecurity over duration of your job you're working now in lansing placement point. I'm laid off like everybody else do overnight issue but lancy plantains where I go and how many years. How many years total have you worked with seventy seven? I four.

They're something to Flint Tunsil Down Small House in rift in behind my My Dad's brother and his his wife lived there until I was like six years old and we moved to let her fired of the south side but it was really small house the House probably about the size and big garages right. You talk about the neighborhood there it can. It was. It was easy going neighborhood you know. Want to fire from Little Star down down the street from US kids go down there and get candy and drink play with all the other kids on the street It was unconscious and in the south end rate cut the country's afternoon bell road and then in the backyard of that in the back yard of that house there would have been Fisher body number one near the great sit down. Strike occurred nights thirty six. Yup Yup it was. I I remember going to the fence that separated us from the railroad. That was up transport parts and cars out of there and watch the trains coming in. Your family worked in that factory crack. My Dad worked there for quite some time. I think is is brother. Did I see and then Eventually when you were growing up then you would Play in the streets downs in Nelson's market. Which was the road right? Yup Dive told stay. We knew train tracks that was dragged next train tracks. Nelson's that's right now. I were talking earlier before we started our podcast about your grandfather. Where did he come from? How did he end up in Flint? think he immigrated from Spain to Mexico Spaniard in while he was very met his wife actually out as Indian blood. And after you've been on there for a while. They chose to immigrate nited States in the end up in Michigan went the they're all and he worked for. Ibm All cotton standard. Just off the ranch travers inbetween van travers. That wrote and that was an auto supplier that made Supplies for making seating and so forth in the in the factory. Yeah I believe was A Lotta seat back then at patent in them and Merck bear not exactly sure we're getting might have been a city work with Sewing machines used remember was called cotton standard once while we go meet him and then your family moved to another neighborhood. Further to the to the east over in the Freeman School neighborhood. Yeah we were. We moved over there Strange because I got used to McKinley school six or seven months. Remove great big open field. Nothing there Like all the businesses that are their right now. Just a great big open building. All the homes were newly built. I don't recall having any grass on the surrounding areas of the house and fell like after maybe a year in an two years being. There would street. Did you live on? I live in Cheyenne Avenue. And you went to a different school. You say I think you said stream right. Yeah we went. The freemen wants to be moved over there like this and when did you like best about it. Reminiscent and thinking back about that. The the neighborhood in the school. What was the best part? There were so many other kids my own age. You know more friends able to walk direct to school without having to worry about our own about traffic on main roads. Nice environment off all the way to score. The school had what they call community school activities. There recall any of that the gym and so on. Yeah they were Some some fun times we would go. There begged parents ago. A lot of fun. We go inside a gym. We'd play Missiles big balls damage ball yet. We draw lemony and they would least nice. Red Marks got hit by the undoing. That and there was baseball activities that you could be a part of so so came later. You did play baseball right. Played in the summer and so forth on a baseball team. Yeah did wasn't for very long. This little guy Rb smaller statute most milder friends at eight catcher. When I first started and I got my head once too often won't get my knocks off eventually got stuck out in right field so I wouldn't get hurt well Let's shift gears for a minute and talk a little bit about. How came that you you stayed in flint after you eventually went on to school at Went to fund south Western living there and then and then after South Western race tool what happened didn't do too much for a couple years. Can late young got out of modal learning more fun in after that Got Tired of not having any money on young job court myself with worked at Kroger's module working at the Kroger Stars. They decided to go to college. And Quinn Kroger's I couldn't. I couldn't do two fulltime days at one time and then I went for a while without any any work. Can I ended up ended up at General Motors issued by Colada? Okay that's known as turn stead in the day and then later it spun off my General Motors and taken over by nine other company. Yeah got the pushed under the ground. You got torn down that I worked there for a while I was hard pressed. A lot of people in the mid seventies Comey wasn't too good but I picked up by organization called the Spanish mation set and they got a referral with General Motors and I worked there for a couple years ago. I made off like most other gym ablaze. Gypsy at bouncing.
How COVID-19 Is Taking Us Back to the Core of Training and Human Movement
"Jeremy. Good to talk to you man. I feel like we talk about youth sports a lot and what would happen. I think about what happened if there was a big just atomic bomb so to speak dropped on the youth sports industry and it had to kind of restart from the ashes and on some level. Maybe were were there at least for the time being. But what do you think about that stuff with how kids are? What's what's what's happening in the level of kids in play right now with all that. Yeah well I think that you're stuck. You're stuck at home. You're stuck in your neighborhood and even are not even allowed you know. The kids are excited to be at a school right. You can't go anywhere you can't go to anyone's house you can't go on you know go play with any kids are not a close anyways so as we were saying before it's like. I think the one of the things that kids are doing a lot of that. I've seen it might have been doing it as ride bikes. You know because you typically away from each other. You're not too close not jumping wrestling like that. So I think that's one those things that You know we've talked about this before two things. The kids used to do that. Don't do anymore and this is one of a ride. Bikes is sort of like brought back from the ashes. Which is which is nice to see any other thing like we've been. We've been playing a lot of wiffle ball stick ball you know any of those games. We took the dog out the other day. I had up by one of my sons aluminum bat and I had aluminum bat. And we're GONNA tennis ball back and forth down the down the street to each other while the dog ran in the middle. You know what I mean. That's typically. He's at baseball practice or or or basketball practice. We even die. I don't know if you see my video but I we moved the We have a trampoline at our house and we moved the basketball hoop over above the trampoline. So that gets throwdown dunks and and play different games inside the inside trampoline which is pretty awesome too. So I know someone's going to get their hands header with gotten these days but still I'm worth I'll take that chance. Yeah they're gonNA be one of those youtube videos were like they're they're gets caught at their hanging upside down when I went out Saturday night my youngest son see seventy was like just hanging on the red after a dunk thinking these lebrons so you know it's keeping them busy and to keep it a move in and that's we need right now for sure. Yeah and it's going back at. Ci taking kids out of organized sports for the time being going back to the the fundamentals of everything the thing they probably should be doing more of right now anyways then I I like CR- with riding bikes to it. Just makes me think about all the all the creativity that comes out when kids ride bikes to you know you're coming. You're find different ways to go off curbs and and you know get around and then there's you know even though it's a bike and that's not necessarily running on the ground there's still. There's so many things that are happening. That are really exciting. Yeah Yeah for sure. There's a lot of like you know those those those little skills that you don't even think about like dynamic balance and and you know being able to like lateral balance. That's one of those ones right like side like you get you get good even like when you try to accelerate your like believing that bike like side to side while you're driving your feet it's route. I always loved how that looks when you see like Bmx guys racing stuff. So in of course the first thing my kids one of my kids did is the ramp who is that. They took their bike out. So everyone's riding down a little hill in China hit the ramp and jumping off the ramp and obviously someone falls right. Got To get up and scrape it off and stuff like that so but it's Yeah I feel like silver lining. I guess some of the things that are happening because of what's happening in the world where we're having to go back to things that that we did when we were kids you know so. It's it's exciting for I. Guess but I'm still not easy like my kids. Still my kids still have chromebooks and then they still WanNa go on there and and spend a Lotta time doing that. Stuff for playing. Ps four and all that but but You know that's one of those things where we have to deal with that to work around it yet. Yeah no I hear you. It's definitely a little bit of a balanced specially this age. But I I'd seen someone else posts out on social media. They said both for the first time in forever whatnot. I've seen Esau kids playing like in the neighborhood or something like that and I mean people like even just so many people who walk through my neighborhood as well you know what I mean just that I don't normally see just out for walks and trying to get outside Nocco stir-crazy inside their house so there was like two ladies walking around on Friday night at. They both had glasses of wine. Just walk into the streets hysterical hub. Jerry you had posted something about and I'm not too familiar with Something I I. I'm assuming someone had a more formal like he's pushups or like. Get your sweat on for kids. Type training thing you posted and versus as we've been talking about just kids playing and doing doing stuff right and so tell me a little bit about that in verse so that have been tallied versus some of the year. What your kids are doing. I think you ought to fund story to about your son had to run up the stairs and touch the various like furniture in a room and come back or so. Tell me about a little contrast between that type of mentality and then what you're doing so I think that it's not. I'm not trying to blame anyone but I think like you know. Probably some parents are adults. Think like Oh you know I do. This type of this type of exercise is good for me. It's probably good for kids and while moving is great for kids the only mean they don't respond or really care or have like the maturity to understand what exercise really is you know what I mean. They only movement they know games. They know things that engages them. It makes them happy. You know what I mean so I think that I think that trying to force them to do. Exercise is because you do it in or I should say an adult. Does it You Know I. It's obviously yeah. Movement is great but there's better ways in it's better ways to engage kids in there's better ways to get them to love movement that rather than get him to force them to do exercise in. It's like everybody way program. It's gotta be like just like you got to the ideas like to be out of breast while if you want kids to be out of breath outside play game of tag or play a game of hide seek or you know. Play a game of like a chase. Where like you have to run down. Play pickle those games kids have fun. There's objective they can they? There's A. There's a goal you know you've got to be safe for. You're going to be out you know there's things like that that they totally grasp and understand And so that's why I think those type of activities are so much better than just can't get the try to exercise you know. Obviously there's a point where a kid probably can exercise like I have a son that is He'll be thirteen in in a month right and he the day he was. He didn't WanNa go outside. Blais you know play with younger kids so I was like. Why don't you go downstairs in? You know go get a workout in. So he went out and did like you know thirty seconds so lunches medicine lamps and you know he did some he doesn't care about swings and things like that so he's sort of getting making that transition whereas like my younger my youngest son you know. He'll he'll plan a trampoline. He'll run around. He'll ask me to make him an obstacle course. Who WANNA wrestle? Daughter judge gymnastics so I brought home some gymnastics mats and she does cartwheels and flips and things like that. You know what I mean. So I think that's where you got to try to find movements and exercise and activities. That kids enjoy. That will lead them to do more than you know. Up Thirty minutes sweat of a body

"Matt really wanna go real bad. I haven't been there in four years. I I don't build anything ever. They're just designed the course and my boss, drums, burly mad and John over. I'll all over there right now, helping build the things I was hoping to go over there hanging out with those dudes and see the contest not sure if I'm doing that or not, but I fly home from here if I don't go to simple session, and then the big job just ahead of us is Park City, which is Woodward Park City. We're building a ski resort not just a Woodward camp. We're building a ski resort. So powder who owns like Killington, Vermont bachelor snowbird. We also own thing called gore goes a mountain, which was a tubing hill. That's where would park cities going. We are building a ski resort. Putting a lift in there. It will be lift accessed mountain by jumps and trails BMX ter- jumps asphalt pump tracks concrete skate parks world class facility for ski indoor skiing, not snow, but like indoor training for skiing snowboarding BMX park for Cape, boarding, cheerleading, all kinds of crazy stuff. It'll be such an insane facility. I can't say enough about it. Because it's like probably the biggest thing that would ever done, and it's going to be unbelievable and where just going to continue to build on that place. And we're basically doing this thing called resort integration. Where I don't know if you saw any press releases, but we're doing this thing called peace park with Danny Davis Woodward, basically joined forces with Danny Davis personnel border, and this amazing thing that his concept. It's called peace park. And it's like, really cool. Oh, like saying that they like a contest that they did that nobody could just go to it would just like secretly built and basically put on the mountain, and they film of crazy stuff. And then they would air on TV and everybody was like what that was there. And I never got the ride it whatever. Well, we're gonna put a peace park at certain powder ski resorts around the United States, and it is going to be freaking awesome man like daddy Davis's behind. He's going gonna be designed a lot of features. I'm going to collaborate on some of that stuff and the idea of peace park on these mountains are like a guy like me or guy like gunny works for us now that used to own the snow park technologies. Ghani was oppressed. Notre back today. But now that we're older, you know, we're good still. But like we're not gonna go out and jump like an eighty jumping blur knees out. Yeah. So the idea of peace park is like we can go on that run where you can take your kids on it their stuff for them. The ride. And like open spaces for them arrived. But there's stuff for like Johnny shred and like get did sick on their stuff for like Danny Davis to be along on the ride. So like do a fifteen foot air on something, you know? So like kind kinda like everything what one it's like, the steak cool, bad ass lines. And we're going to be dropping these things at different powders or it's and I think people are going to be super psyched about him. Well, you know, talking about that everything snow space like I watch and what they're doing on, you know, with dirt bikes and wall rides now and things like that. Here's a question for, you know, the way your mind ticks and your way into UTV's. I mean, I I know like RG Anderson he tried to do some grinds and couple of his videos with razors. You gotta ask them ideas for some crazy jumps ramps or features for like fucking these razors. Right. Do you remember two years ago when I was texting you? Yeah. I need to talk to you. Yeah. Wait never really had that conversation. Well, I'm not gonna let any of those go over this conversation because I don't need anybody stealing. My shit, but I have five different things hands down right now that are like within the realm of my building capabilities and making happen. I just don't have the money to do it or anybody to like, I don't have the money to like even put into my razor. So like because I know I'm gonna crash a little bit, and whatever I just physically can't make it happen..

"To the lifestyle that you built like your bmx friends it makes sense based upon an interest group so that's why it's interesting you're like i don't have toll workers anymore but you try to make friends and like the porn world it's been a mixed bag but it's also kinda my fall like i haven't really tried to hit people up and like hang out with them more consistently me and carly we're gonna make plans this week but you should probably do that other people don't stick to it i don't stick to it and then kind of like the hang out doesn't really necessarily happen but i feel like it's different with you people just come here i mean being camarillo whatever it's like yeah there's like the actual literal collaborations and stuff but it's not really something where you know if you're going to spend most of your time working by yourself you're not going to necessarily have a reason to hang out with them and the other girls do the same thing so much you know with bmx it's like something that you probably realistically don't really wanna do by yourself that much join a hobby that is not an individual hobby the poetry lunch i know i don't go enough and also the morning hang out there the more likely that you're gonna shit your hair off and become less like social justice psychopath that i know still looks inside you i like to recycle leave me alone that's not what i'm worried about saying i don't put my trash on the floor the poetry lounges cool but also in some ways i think that'd be should be keeping an eye have you found out that the fbi had undercovers who are lurking in the allows would you be upset really yeah i think it's racist racist yeah why are they why are they going with thirty fucking seat auditory at star thirty hundreds of people in there the okay but it's like rattle i was trying to explain to out of the spoken word poetry is like a brother of rap and hip hop they're just they're there's more j cole than they are a little pump and and those guys do poetry i'm like wow jay call so much lamar cardi b cardi b i just feel like you're the phrase oppression olympics no but not half well that's kind of what i feel like the poetry lounge feels like to me it's like you came during the slam finals okay so those are the people who actually get awards for their poetry write poetry does happen to be about like felt like a contest to see who could be the most oppressed who could summon up the most sympathy from the audience like let's be real historical reason for why poetries like i don't i would like to know how like the modern i'm sure there's other like sub genres votary in that are not so like this but it just that was the thing that was weird to me it's just really felt like that was the sole focus and the sole way that things were being judged when i looked at the score it was just like who could elicit the most simple sympathy to the top in poetry are the people who got the most feeling and a reaction from the audience audience votes on the poetry but i think that's also about the demographic of the audience because when i would go to poetry readings and santa cruz ten has different demographic and yes they're mostly still people in their early twenties educated but you were a lot more likely to hear.
