"Station 22 on AM Tampa Bay and This is something I've been looking forward to Hillsboro State Attorney Andrew Warren regarding this story that developed over the weekend of a Tampa teen charged over a massive Twitter hack who apparently got fairly wealthy here as a result of somehow getting Bitcoin and Andrew. I don't understand that whole story about How he gets Bitcoin or how you Khun, get it from these well known people and stuff. Explain this whole thing to us if you would Absolutely good morning, everyone. Well, this was a pretty sophisticated fraud. Essentially what happened is this young man gained access to Twitter's internal controls, and he did that through basically hacking and using social engineering but to compromise a Twitter employee Preventing. She has access to Twitter's internal controls, and what he does is, he starts selling access to different people's Twitter accounts. Ultimately, what he ended up doing is going into the Twitter accounts of prominent people in companies like Barack Obama, Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Apple and he sent out tweets from those accounts. Saying, Hey, I'm feeling generous. If you send Bitcoin to this address all send you twice as much back. He basically made it sound like those wealthy and prominent individuals were accepting Bitcoin. I'm going to send back twice as much and what he did is he posted his own Bitcoin address, and people send Bitcoin to him, And that's how he collected nearly $115,000 worth of Bitcoin in just one day. Yeah, that's $115,000 in just one day, but he had a lot more than that ahead of times an investigation. Dating back to last year. It looks like he's got about 300 Bitcoin. Is that what happens to that Bitcoin? Well, it's no surprise that this young man had been involved in other criminals frauds before another schemes to the fraud. That's why yesterday. Excuse me on Saturday when he had his first appearance in court here. We asked the judge to make sure that any money he posts towards bond was Queen money not coming from a prior fraudulent scheme on their focus is on this particular hack. The federal authorities are still looking on what he may have done in the past. But again, this was a kid. This was not sort of his first time his first rodeo here. This was a well planned 2.5 months attack that could have destabilized not just Twitter, but the financial system across the country. And I understand there are a couple of other guys to hear one from Orlando and One from the U. K. That's right. The FBI Cyber Crime Task Force investigation ended up arresting Ah young man, a teenager in the UK and a young man in Orlando as well. These were essentially coconspirators. Of the 17 year old in Tampa. Graham Clark. These were people who worked with Tio sell access to the accounts that he had hacked on you. And you filed 30 felony charges against him last week. So what does it look like? What do you want to see here as far as those charges and where they go? What we felt charged against him for essentially the overall fraud in a variety of parts of the fraud. The identity theft is a communications fraud for sending out the tweets, which are In furtherance of a scheme for the hacking. You know, our goal is always the same thing. We want to make sure that we're holding defendants accountable and we want to make sure that we're doing everything we can to support victims and get their money back from them. I think another important point of this is We're starting to see a lot of these kids getting into this type of hacking and social engineering and and there seems to be this idea that it's a bit of a game. This is not a game. They're serious crimes with serious consequences, And it's important for people to understand that the FBI Cyber Crime Task force is extremely active, and if you're ripping people off online and think you're going to get away with it, you're in for a rude awakening, which is probably going to come in the form of that six AM not coming door from federal law enforcement. Well, I'll tell you what if this kid once he gets out of jail I'm thinking it's somebody might want to hire him just because he's apparently some kind of tech genius. Well, there remains to be seen down the road. You know, obviously we have Ah, job ahead of us to be able to prove the charges and hold him accountable and we'll see what when we get to that point. What? The appropriate sentence and sanctions should be for this young man. But at this point, this is someone who you know this was a serious massive fraud. Um, sophisticated, extensive. And the damage could've been far worse in just $100,000 in Bitcoins again, he could have destabilized financial markets. With access to powerful political figures. Twitter accounts he could have Undermined and influenced domestic policy and even in a global diplomacy, with all that said he has a job with Jack Harris. Jack. We'll let you come meet with him. Maybe he satisfies your qualifications Go well. Hillsboro state Attorney Andrew Warren, Thanks for joining us on a M. Tampa Bay this morning and Explaining what's happening here. Absolutely. Thank you so much. Have a great day. Thank you. You just described the film catch me if you can with Leonardo DiCaprio give now Abigail Junior to do fake checks. And then afterwards they ended up hiring him. I've never used Bitcoin of you. No, no, no, no, it's to challenge We talk to Jay Ratliff about it. Yeah. No, I don't believe Katie and Natalie have used Bitcoin, have you? Oh, no, that's like dark, dark Web stuff like that. My brother dabbles in it. He thinks he's going to get rich off of it. Well, I can't imagine somebody sends you amount of money and you and tells you to send twice as much back why they did that classic scam. You see, we give cards now, all the time. We've talked with Brian. Think of F L Z. He got caught on one of these scams a little while ago, so he's gotta be really careful. Yes, you do. Anyway, it's a 29 on AM Tampa Bay. Sean Hannity. Morning minute just here to tell the truth brought to you by Simms and equipment. Turn up your radio. Here's the Sean Hannity. Morning minutes..

CEO, of Ev West. A company that builds and Converts Electric Cars down. In San, Diego area they have done some really cool streetcars. They've done some really cool race cars. They've raised pikes peak and pretty soon, they are going to Bonneville with their newest project. So here to talk about it on the zoom the CEO of e West Michael Bream. On small tar podcast. I've already done it. I've done it in the in the on awkwardness my own home. How are Ya antastic? You'd see. Yeah. What's I mean you know Since we last talked there's been quite a lot of development in the world of Evil Hot Rod. You can buy E v Crate Motors. Now I mean you know what a world right? I mean, it comes in a crate or why don't you tell me if you bought one of these things I mean GM brought that that electric crate And I took some kind of interest in it didn't you? Yeah, we did. We actually have easy west parts in there and cooled I. Think you know the reality is, is they try to make off in sound simple and Bolton but it's it's quite difficult and a lot of these guys are kind of in the space to get attention Yamaha motors recently of did something like that they're putting out a crate motor and we called Yamaha and they're like, no, it's not. It's really. Out there. Actually openly admitted like. Fishing there we just threatened the pond. This is such bullshit because you know often I, hear from people who want me to comment on the fact that. The Craig's is GonNa Have Bluetooth work on blockchain. Put bitcoin right that yeah, it's it's interesting Matt I was just thinking about that the other day like if somebody could do like a best hits real and just go back through like GM announcements and I mean I feel like we've been told like three or four times from every automaker, they're having an electric truck or this out of the other thing and here it is twenty, twenty and Where are they right? Well, A-. Onto, something right isn't it we're really is a reinvite we're gonNA see Arena I mean that's a good point. You cannot buy not buy it and they don't have a fan I love Ribian. Want to die. Early And then into politics. Ev Crate Motors but it's important. To note the building an electric truck or a heavy duty vehicles, extremely difficult and extremely expensive, and so This isn't a model three or a key Niro or whatever they're trying market. They're trying to bring up a full size truck and compete with you know the Ford F, one, fifty, soul Arado, etc. that is You know no small task of the and again we're talking about essentially start up companies to this date haven't produced anything and I think Riviera's far far far ahead of everyone but you look at companies like Nikola and some of the other companies that are essentially trying to get her capital off of computer enters

What's Hype, What's Real on the Latest in AI

"Hi Everyone. Welcome to this week's. Sixteen minutes I'm zonal your host, and this is our show where we talk about the headlines what's in the news and where we are on the long arc of tech trends were back from our holiday break, and so this we're covering all the reasons and ongoing as around the topic, of GP, three, the natural language processing based text predictor from the San. Francisco Research and Development Company opened ai the actually released their paper on. GPT three in late May. But only released their broader commercial API a couple of weeks ago. So we're seeing a lot of excitement and activity around that in particular although it's all being called GP T. Three. So we're going to do one of our explainer episodes of the two x explainer. Going into what it really is how it works why it matters broader implications and questions while teasing apart, what type, what's real as is the premise of the show but before I introduce our expert, let me just quickly summarize some of the highlights. So while Gpt, three is technically a text predictor that actually reduces what's possible because of course, words and software are simply coding of Human Thought to borrow a phrase from. Chris. Dickson which means a lot more things are possible. So we're seeing a note these are all cherry picked examples believable forum pose comments, press releases poetry. screenplays, articles somebody who wrote an entire article headlined open is GP Three may be the biggest thing since bitcoin and then revealed midway that he didn't actually write the article but that gpt three did we're also seeing strategy documents like for business CEO's and advice written entirely gpt three and not just words. But we're seeing people design using words to write code for designing websites and other designs. Someone even built a plugin again, all of it showing the Trans mutability of thoughts to words to code to design and so on, and then someone made a search engine that can return. Answers and you are ells in response to quote ask me anything which has anyone who's been in NLP space knows I was at park when we spun off powers that back in the day, and that's always been sort of a holy grail of question answering which you know all about to having worked in this world frank on thou let me introduce you are expert in this episode Frank Chances written a lot about ai including a primer on ai deep learning and machine learning a pulse check on ai what's working what's not a micro site with resources for how to Get started practically and do something with your own product and your own company, and then reflecting on jobs and humanity and working together. You can find all of that on our website frank to start things off. What's your favorite example of gpt three so far mine is founding principles for a religion written and gpt three. I'd love to hear your favorite and also your quick take on the excitement to start us off before we dig a bit deeper favorite out of the whole thing is it's doing arithmetic. So Ascot, what's twenty-three plus sixty seven like just arbitrary two digit arithmetic. This is a natural language processing. Model and so basically, it got trained by feeding it lots and lots of text and out of that, it's figuring out we think how to do arithmetic, which is very, very surprising because you don't think that exists in texts the excitement. Potentially is promising signs of progress towards general artificial intelligence. So today if you want to do very, highly accurate. natural language processing, you build a bespoke model. You have your own custom architecture you feed it a ton of data. What gpt three shows is that they train this model once and then they throw at a whole bunch of natural language processing tasks like fill in the blank or inference or translation, and without retraining it at all. They're getting really good results compared to finely tuned models. Before we even though into teasing apart, what type what's real? Let's first talk about the it what is GP three? So we have two things one, we have a machine learning model cpt is actually an acronym stands for generative pre trained transformer will go through all those insect. But thing one is we have a P- retrained machine learning model that's optimized to do a wide variety of natural language processing tasks like reading a wikipedia article and answering questions from it or guessing what the ending of a story should be or so on insulin. So we have a machine learning model. The thing that people are playing with a Pi that allows developers to essentially ask questions. Of that model. So instead of giving you the model and you program it to do what you want, they're giving you selective access via the API one of the reasons they're doing this is that most people don't have the compute infrastructure to even train the model there's been estimates that if you wanted to train the model from scratch, it costs something like five to ten million dollars of cloud compute time. That's a big big model and say like they don't give out the model and then to the controversy around this thing when they released the first version was they were worried that if they just gave the model out, people would do nefarious things with it like. Fake News articles that you would just like Saturate bomb the web than so they're like look we want to be responsible with this thing, and so we'll get access via. API. Then we know exactly who's using it and then the the I can be a bit of a throttle on what can and can't do

Gold price hits record high amid fears over coronavirus crisis

"Today, reaching new record highs and here to take us through. Why that's happening is our chief markets editor. She's scarlet food scholar. What is going on? Oh, David. I mean, this is a story that's been going on for a couple of weeks here, But today we did see gold reaching new high. The next stop is $2000 Alex, Of course, we did surpass the highs we saw. In September of 2011 and we say both gold and a silver on a tear here Now the stock of the R If we had to pick one would be G l D. This is the biggest gold. Why now, While we've got the Federal Reserve meeting this week, and the central bank will almost be guaranteed to signal lower for longer. A lot of investors are interpreting that to mean lower forever that is weighing down on the dollar, weaker dollar, stronger commodity prices like gold. In addition, you've got the new co bit outbreaks across the United States and, of course, renewed U. S. China tensions So in the same regard, we're also seeing Bitcoin get a bid higher as well. Bitcoin trading above 10,000 $10,000 at the moment now within the S and P 500 year looking for companies, Newmont Mining is the on ly gold miner there. It is higher seventh day of gains to a record high. Also among foreign company stocks. Common stocks traded in the U. S. Nine out of the 10 most actively traded our gold or precious metals miners and can see some of the names right. There was this guy when you talk about a weaker dollar and people buying gold, traditionally, one would think that's a hedge against inflation. Now inflation hasn't been anywhere for a long time. Should we be looking out for the possibly inflation is down the road. While people are definitely talking about it all that massive fiscal stimulus has got people worried that there will be inflation down the road. It's been deflationary so far, but we've seen break even rates start to creep higher and Bond yields are negative on a real basis when adjusted for inflation, So you've got negative really yields adding to the situation one thing to note here even as we talk about gold prices, heading to new record highs and potentially getting to 2000 on a nominal basis, Yes, there at a new level, but when you adjust for inflation there, so below the levels we saw in 2011 and far below the levels that we saw in the 19 eighties, so there is room to rise further. And that's why you see a lot of the analyst projecting higher prices for Gold Bank of America, for instance, sees gold getting 2 $3000 over the next year and 1/2 you B s a little bit more conservative, Forecasting $2000 by the end of September 2000 is definitely the next level Toe Watch. We don't know whether will happen in days or in a couple of weeks. A lot of talk there about how there might be some consolidation in the weeks ahead before we eventually get to that 2000.

Security Firms Soar on Stock Market Following Twitter's Big Hack

"When the world's biggest celebrities asked their twitter followers for money a couple of weeks ago. Users like Barack Obama Joe Biden Elon, Musk and Bill Gates sent tweets promising to quote enrich the community. Send A bitcoin payment. They said and will give you back double. The amount you sent. The tweets came from their verified accounts. The ones marked with a little blue check marks that tell you it's really them. Only, it wasn't really them. All a scam the accounts had been hacked. The tweets were flagged quickly, but not quickly enough. Apparently hackers pocketed more than one hundred thousand dollars before the tweets were removed according to Forbes. This isn't the first time twitter's been hacked, but it marked the worst breach in the company's history. The hack left users and shareholders rattled amid new questions about the platform security. Twitter's stock took a hit, but one sector got a bump from the attacks Cybersecurity, california-based crowd strike was one of the stocks that enjoyed a bump after the hack on Thursday. Crowd strike offers a range of cybersecurity solutions including protection from phishing emails. They also train employees to spot social engineering breach attempts another stock that enjoyed a post. Hack bump was cyber Ark which specializes in protecting what it calls privileged access, so let's say you need special credentials to access certain areas or data within your network cyber Ark monitors those areas and sounds the alarm when changes are made like they were doing the twitter hack. Twitter Will Be Fun Today - The College Kids Who Hacked Into Twitter

"Today's guests. His Hip Awan CEO of Afani. Secure and private cell phone service locum his Heeb. Thank you Laura for home. You'll show. You were one of the investigators in touch with the young people who hacked twitter last week and gain control of prominent accounts, including those of Joe. Biden Obama Elon Musk and others as well as those of crypt companies like coin, base and finance, and when they had control those accounts, they were soliciting bitcoin from twitter users. How did you get in touch with the hackers? So Laura be in like. four-time itself, so then after I was so pissed off that angry that I said I need to solve this problem, and so I've entered into a form that relates how they have those accounts holiday getting pretty much all the ring of how they operate so. When you say that they had had your twitter account, nor they have my Sim Sark four times. Okay, and when you say Sim, swaps just described that in case, listeners does up. Does improper pretty much. What happened is like someone will take the form so the underground market like think about Ebay, but like I knew democracy with information. So you said your name, your information social security number your call logs your life, your life, location or anything on you. If I say hey, I need to find out for Laura Shane telephone number, and they'll give me telephone number will give me a call loss to give you. An everything comes through telephone numbers of numbers unique, and then if I say. Say Hey. I need to take the phone number 'cause I need so they will just prophet abuse him that I control, and I need to pay them few hundred dollars now. Your formula not work anymore because I had control of Sim card, so then I use that telephone number to get into a g mail, facebook and twitter, so if you go on twitter, new likely rescinded to email our number. If it's telephone number you've got. Someone's adopted very common technique deployed across US for a long time. So. The twitter hack twitter said that their employees had been socially engineered, and that's how these hackers gained control the systems. Are you saying that? Some twitter employees have their account. Sim swapped like how how does that you or Simspon tried? These people relate to the twitter Hack Greg? You wanted to ask me like how to get in touch with them so I'm trying to understand. You, that of analysis himself, so started going into the industry into this form than trying to see how they operate and to Dodd funny, so which will provide the made acadia that probably that cannot be Simpson's. That's what we did an offer that. VINCI START GETTING customers. Have you would actually getting a lot of attempts to do so? You would getting Dempsey pretty much every week that someone prior to himself or customer, trying to like hack into our system and mend the failed. I got in contact David Mayhew call, they would email method you and they will do all kinds of attacks. You know they'll try to let pen to pen tests. The everything did and obviously in one of the cases restocked immunity stopping messing around it right I know what you're up to. And after I got in touch with him to signal and author that the lake. Not I won't say that become a friend, but I told them why you're doing this. Thank you know you should not do this multiple hackers and they said okay. If you don't have anything to do pretty much, does it okay? Why don't you get a job? He said job, and then they start feeding the all information to proved at. Legit than a lot of information and how I was getting information from a lot of talk of the vote. And when it all this happened that you got in touch with him and had it happened late four five months ago. Okay They were diverging to me not just for this hot, but for other purposes to ride like a kid discount. Lot of databases beach everyday, so they wanted to see that a hey. If I'm interesting in the database, just wanted to work pretty much. is not money. It's also about ego that they wanNA prove something that they would do something so. So Mike Context for not hacking, but they'll be into the songs that they had access to. That follows A. Up I didn't want to. Excessive today were passing me. Hey, today. This is for sale to do sports on tomorrow. This person's so on the deal stood attack. I got a message that will be fun today, and when this message I thought he'd be like a distributor barks. Like scam scams, and but after why? That's all the kind. We got attacked ten. Finance Accounting Noble at depth one time. I taught that it's just a third party API like you know you have like you know where your schedule. The in everything I thought that may be compromised, and that's how they got author. Riley said No. We have everything. A screen chart I tweeted screen shot, and after that is blue. Well and so, who are these people? who were the people involved in the actual twitter hack? The difficult to identity like frankly I don't know I can speculate, but obviously because someone security and privacy I don't want to speculate but I can tell you wanting like college. Kids are maybe like someone between eight, eighty, twenty, one, twenty, two, and they are video gamers. They'd metaphor armed, and they found fascinating for them. Dislike a game like you go into video game on you killing you do stuff for them. It's like that. They, probably living in some way or radio patterns right now in basement. Who does not even know anything? and. They just do it for fun. Obviously, money's there, too, but most of fun for them is just a today. And so originally. The way you got in touch with them was they were targeting these different cell phone accounts, and what does motivation and taking over the different cell phone accounts so for account you can actually to when people take account, they can actually destroy you financially emotionally ended up recently, though by financial I can say they can get into your county bank accounts ticket by Tiptoe through that they can buy a lot of levels of securities financially they can do. obviously going to facebook in an email to, and then they donor all information from your facebook, and then they start blackmailing you that. Hey, likely when a lot you have done this like you know you have this. And you have to pay me this information out there and a lot of people would have to pay them the money because they don't pay the money. They looted operation right so and then third party. They just become Parson Mike is the word processing me. blender used to take my county new. They cannot get anything, but they wanted to talk to me. Just fun for them like people. Some people are sick. Like how did they pick you out of all the different people that they could torture also the league, if not just me like everyday hundreds of people to get them soft, though I'm just one of them on average, every second medical become victim of since up, not himself but cybercrimes so. But I had the impression that this was primarily targeting crypto currency people, but you're saying it's any bundled nor I think eighty percent of people who was himself to an entrepreneur L.! And the new in the cases of those people is it like personal vendettas that they're trying to? You can make more money by a hacking Lord cell than anything else you know. is one thing but Lloyd is like one number one target Loyd and has professionals league doctor medical doctor then. In Lord other number one targets in suffers, and what is the motivation for targeting lawyers Don. Money don't happen. How do they monetize that Yeah, so I tell you doctors, basically busy less tech, savvy and rich. It's that easy to find out any doctor information. You can find out who the best doctor in the city and you consume. Stop Him. And once you get into that account, you can transfer money between accounts who can be that people have been? Going into the count, Simpson calling the bank making via transfer, and then just checking accounts. That's pretty common. For for doctors to clinics have a lot of money. If you'RE GONNA clinic, instead he did even like five hundred hundred million dollar distorted the front because Alaska. Election for them. Okay, so let's go back to the twitter hack. They were some names that were identified of people who are involved these names. In The New York Times article that quoted you as a source one was kirk. There were some other people ll and ever so anxious. Who were these people? And how did they know each other? So they don't. Know the Best Birdie. They just hang out on rooms like chatting channels lake similar people on developed talked with you. The pirates channels. We had people a go if they WANNA have information to the document industry for finding information. If I want someone associated Gordon dissipates on one. Don't get call for these people trade information. And you asked about like a leg. Imagine your lawyer and you are fighting for my open kiss. We begin go to the website by that long since he will. They are who they're talking to the day can. Make some delays on them. That's one thing but other than that. These people are just a game as they would play like you know different video games and kick the die, who was basically a source of the rate industry rock says they'll be extra agents, and they are in room for longtime and David. Obviously you want you want something you don't trust the new guy. The new guy who is basically the main culprit punching the entity because multiple reasons, but the main guidance, the just which had A. Reputation. If you say you want a username of Laura at Laura, Shannon inactive. You may not trust kick, so you can do this. Middle Diane Tell Them Hey, can you hold the money for because you have a good relation? Because like Ebid forums generally have a petition systems. You know so then you ve into this guy like you know every inch it He went to care. Concur depended he the credit employees but I. Don't think he was employees. And, then he gave him the concert start building. So this is just a middleman. He was just broken deals. You tell them what you want. He was just keep his car and transfer the money. The is completed that fall. And so so kirk was was saying that he was a twitter employees, but as you said, you don't think that he was, and he was essentially selling valuable twitter accounts, and if people didn't trust, Kirk, they would use ever so anxious as their middleman to get the different twitter handles that they wanted. Is that what happened? That's correct. Good Gig, only unharmed on in July of. July it was very recently. that. He actually came so obviously not trust someone admit. That soon. July seventh in the New York Times article are. Limited okay, but all right so but ever so anxious. How to longer reputation and. And that was who people are transacting with. And so then. How did BITCOIN come into this? All. On these things happen through Bitcoins, so the way it started was they were selling. This twitter handles four bitcoin and then later. How did the scam change? So I. Personally is what I personally think. That kid was in touch with the employees who was giving these accounts. For a few thousand dollars. And then. Either bribed him. Architects. Social Engineering Him. Legs because like hey can do. This is my. This is purely my speculation that you're working for so long. He warned the trust. Any may have said Hey, can you log in forbid I wanNA see how it looks like something that he made it something so the guy is pasta on. Hey, just do it, but don't do anything crazy. You Know Butt kicked. Decide Okay, man I can just go on or can also go online with I can do it I can. Can also go on like you know. All those accounts crazy. That's what I okay, but you're just speculating. You don't have any proof that or or do you know what? I don't have any proof of that I don't approve. Have critic probably do it? And Kirk? Is probably a guy called coup, which is on a farm for a long time, so he speculated that he someone that was in the industry for wide, but not. Approved that. Kicked it, but from all the action than everything it all points to cook. Irene so in a moment we're gonNA. Talk a little bit more about what happened. Exactly I, in sight, twitter and scam, but First a quick word from the sponsors who make this show possible. How much in fees are you paying? Back to my conversation with his Heeb Awan. So, we don't know exactly how. Kirk got into twitter's internal systems. However Once. He or she did then what'd he do or or she do with their power? So. Kirk than they went to buy I think. Start with by notes I'm coin base. And the see your finance and he made it account Egypt first of all. What did it was did with other? Account. Okay, which means when you log in, it asks you to do a second type of security, which is hopefully. If you're in the crypto space, you have used something like Hugo, authenticate or key, and you're not using text message based second factor authentication. Where they sent a code your phone because otherwise if he gets swaps than than having no. Buyer so. Removed that and then keep going good thing. They added wall a secondary second. You know Autodata so now. I'll give example like you have my username seep, so they moved to a FE, and they're also removed. Jane, Email. And then they. Did possible reset. So the new email guard, the chain deposited garden the account. and. tweeted whatever they wanted. Well, and what were they tweeting? So, they were tweeting that you know. About Co. Ed Nineteen I believe like you know because of Covid, we like helping people. I don't remember the wording. Health Has Something and they said Back. And this is video any comments in YouTube. Actually they were so good that frankly sometime I get like you know Oh my God like the able to make it like a secondary thing. That's real you know and like, but this happens pretty commonly, and and it's happening for almost two years now i. It, really is the kind of thing where people think it's real I honestly. Had created a question for you, which is who are the people who are savvy enough to own bitcoin and know how to send it, but not savvy enough to spot. What to me seems like an obvious scam. Actually went on the Internet and are tweeted out this thing same thing I said like who are those people who can have sophisticated enough to buy Bitcoin, but knowledge to. Send. Bitcoin but I think leap Dick's everything. Like I agree people think okay. Let's give it a chance. You know it's like a lottery ticket. You know people may be, but they think what if this is true and other than that. If you like an must happening there, actually flaunted, be efforts on twitter. All the time with people are donating money on twitter, but they don't ask for anything they say hey, can you give me your Alfred Egland who this every day, so he will dollars to off fifty dollars for every person everyday. You'll say. Retreat this. I'll give you this money. So this happens right now and obviously As hit audible, read like you know when viewed come in people, people forget everything that you know. We have so many Ponzi scheme like so many scattered that happened that exist today could if I come to unity Laura investment scheme, which is a pretty good you know. He hit all the MACHIDA. But it only gives you five percent. You may not listen to that. Say Hey, Lord the Child who may tennis money tomorrow. You may skip everything. Cocaine is thousand and ten dollars tomorrow. Okay I'll take the risk from doing that. Hopefully I'm sure my listeners are savvy enough to know if it sounds too good to be true. But people do that I. Think I have estimated that around like maybe I. Just in this journal given us cam like. He put a lot of tens of millions of dollars and well not last week, but no, not over time overtime. Yeah, yeah, we'll be sending money, so there are enough food. I guess yeah over I mean for last week. The hackers did net about a little over thirteen bitcoin, which was about one hundred twenty thousand dollars, although analysts said that about twenty, thousand of it seems to have come from a suspicious address that they actually think controlled by the hackers to kind of make it look like this was legit and people were actually sending money. But then also by the way they could have netted more. However, Cuevas said that it did prevent more than one thousand customers from sending about two hundred and eighty thousand dollars worth of Bitcoin to the twitter hackers so oriented, so let's talk a little bit also about just what happened in twitter which was? Twitter blog posts. Hackers a targeted. Thirty accounts for forty five of those they reset the password and sent tweets from those accounts for eight of them. They actually downloaded that counts data, and then for thirty sixty legitimate direct message inbox, including one elected official from the Netherlands, and it was who. What do you think they could do with such information? I think it's A. Black, man that I've been talking to you about what happened with sin sopping. Let's think about it if you have first all that fool Phoolan that why didn't put? It wasn't like planned. I don't believe it was just like in the move in the heat of happened. BANDAIDS slaves. They clearly guy who just got drunken pretty might do everything but I think if you have access to like anyone, social media, proper social media like I have been I've received. Messages. And I but I don't believe that I think we have forged around. Believe the electoral, so, but if you have someone should media that maybe confidential information that can be misused by Stacey when leg if you do about it on dedic messages, a you know that's not confident that even with the journalist visceral broads. You know so I. Don't know who the information was. What fast, but that's video very very concerning and I believe this may happen on facebook or other social media from his. Because to same. Attack Factor. Yeah I definitely think that this is. One of those cases where it makes you want to just use encrypted social messaging APPS. Such as like signal or something, maybe what's up? So, let's just also talk a little bit about what we said before about how the hackers were able to remove two factor authentication on these accounts. Well, actually what they did I was. They changed the email address. And then the chain Laras Oh, actually bid on a there was A. There was an email. There was a blog post by somebody who had the at six twitter account, and they said they believed that the hackers change the address, but that when that happened, it did not send a notification to the original email address, but not I don't know if this person was surmising, you know six hundred interest in history, those belong to a hacker. Their the community of Hackers Gobi Twenty six hundred. That's like a court for hackers right. Not a quarterback, just like community for hackers and you were the hacker who ended up homeless anywhere. They will do attack into I think he would to. And he went into multiple you as homeless, but he was a hacker. And oxygen community belong to sixty name. Is this secretly off? I believe his name. And, but yes, but I think the first drift was removed and then. moved. To the letter. Control of it now thought it was the reverse, but either way. In Like for any of us who are in the crypto space who have been? Keeping up with our security and using things like Google. or UB and avoiding. Text message based to a or or any kind of to a based on our phone number. What? Can we take away from this like? Is there any advice that you have for Crypto? People on how they can protect themselves if the services that we use have loopholes like this. Let's not that'll be biased in obviously you know. Will. Finding here, but that's what we do, right. We work, but a lot. Actually I am surprised at how many a compromise them security argue out stocking some customer yesterday and they do You know an extra seat is probably the most I can tell you I know. We are making like a faces, but at same part exit. She's most prominent used offer manager for probably ninety ninety nine percent of the word. What would you recommend instead? There's something at one time I have statistics, said ninety five percent of people who are like major changes. Do not have to a fait. Sms I'm talking more to a and I think ninety nine percent of those are what you estimates to say. The people who've been additives Everyday I have started I deal with at least two or three people who get up everyday and came and we had some of the to affair, and I can get into that lot of people into the spark that they were not believe enough not to change it. please. KCBS is Carrie, who two SEC reports in Burlingame, where Wozniak discussed the accusations with his lawyers. The lawsuit filed in San Mateo County Superior Court claims YouTube and parent company Google used images of tech entrepreneurs. Like Steve Wozniak, Elon Musk Bill Gates and others to attract users to send in Bitcoin. If they want to multiply their returns. Wozniak wants to make it clear those viewers did not receive any money back. The fact is the crimes being done. I'm not going to send you two for one. Anybody would look at it and say it's a crime. Wozniak says the video sharing giant continued to promote ads for the give away even after certain posts were removed. He's tried to contact YouTube several times but hasn't received a response. This thing could've been solved if we could reach a human with all our trying and trying and trying from the start, his attorney, Joe Cotchett, says the scam has been going on for more than two months. "I've worked at four Square Bell, basically since twenty eleven there was a little bit of time that I spent away but now I'm sort of on the. Innovation Labs team. LABS team. Not execture what our official name is, but basically we are a small group, three four or five people depending on how you count, who are just. Tasked with using four squares location technology to build cool consumer products and and put them out into the wild, and I love this team. Because we just build things quickly, we can just do very quick prototypes, and we don't have to worry about the Who we don't have to worry too much about the business case or the the short term money concerns, which I did have to worry about on some teams foursquare, which weren't bad teams, either but I love the idea of just being able to build. It's It's a lot of fun. Awesome some will the question we asked on. Every episode is is just what what is brought. You bring into the block chain crypto space, and what's your back story? You Genesis story with that. Yeah I mean I've I've been interested in this space for a long time I think. I think it just goes with my interest in emerging technology trying to figure out. Back, in the early part of the last decade, like two thousand ten's. I felt like I totally missed the the. The. Move to mobile in terms of consumer applications now like all right. You know what I don't WanNa miss things anymore in the future, so let me start to make sure that I'm always reading up on emerging technology and what's going on what people are building and what people are working on and then I cover that cover that in a local maximum cover that on my podcast as well. And also like my interest in sort of just. Human innovation and individual innovation. Maybe I'll put it that way like I feel like monopolies are They get us into trouble I. Don't want declare like all monopolies, evil or anything, but I feel like we have nowadays. Of course we have sort of our social media. Big Tech monopolies that are causing. Huge problems and it's sort of a one-size-fits-all and. I don't even WanNa. Get into those problems when I say this problems with facebook I, but everyone agrees that have problems with facebook, but people disagree on what the problems are. And then of course you know, there's problems with our money in our financial system. Don't forget the monopoly too so. I looked at bitcoin. May Be. I don't know the the the early part of the last decade I I wasn't like. I wasn't like the first one of the first people to look into it, but definitely people in in software in New York. We're talking about it. Thousand, thirteen, twenty fourteen, and it was really interesting kind of seeing all the crazy things were going on. We're of thinking. What is this stuff you know? Is it Is it really anonymous, is it? Can someone hack into it and those questions were people still ask those questions, but those questions were very. On certain back then like you know I now I have a pretty ironclad guarantee because I understand the technology and see the track record. You know people still ask. Why can't someone just take money from my? bitcoin account you can replace it obviously with a theory or any other i. can't someone who's minding takes something from my account and put in their account. You know people don't understand that well how the technology works and even once you understand. The technology works like I still think there could be a trick to it because if you think about it, you know even the theorem smart contracts. Sometimes, there's a trick to it and someone figures it out I. Mean Look at the the Dow. What. was that twenty seventeen where there was a a theorem smart contract and a really big, and then somebody figured out how to extract the money from there so. It's It's it's it's. Just to think about like what my thought processes were back in those days to what they are now. Sort of changed completely. I guess I'm so much more confident now in the space. It's so much more stable even though it's maybe looks much more unstable now to people from the

"See this a lot now. I don't know how it's coming up in such A. Everyday vernacular, but the cash coin shortage in everybody's scared that America's GonNa go to a cashless society. bitcoins Guy Unique. Part to deal with that just because. Now all the sudden. You really do have a need for some. Cash currency system that's outside of. A, pure. Government issued digital currency, but the the governor's like convincing the government to go with that. Happen, it's not. So now you're left with that scenario. That seems ever so more likely. There's going to be people that use big win. And outside of government issued currency, and then there's going to be governor issue Kersey. It's like one's always going to be sullied in out. Compartmentalized as the other people's currency and then there's government issued currency like. If especially, if we go to a cashless society, that's just going to be the way that it is I. Bet you point of sale systems one even like. charge a fee or something that will happen with someone tries to pay with Bitcoin or it'll just be the under the table kind of thing like you've. equivalency of being gadget will be bang. Gleaming Let's. How much are we going to assume that? Governments are going to pay attention to this stuff if they are only just coming to the realization like. Black people matter. You know that's a good question gory. It seems is based on like Previous episodes talked about black stuff like. Nation states will use will use things like bitcoin specifically bitcoin apparently because fuck privacy To? Fund things that they're not supposed to fund or like. Maybe, they'll use it to find I know that they use it to. They watch it to track illicit finance, so they can have more information about terrorist cells funding each other to do things that they would not like them to do across the board. All countries are doing that. And coined join. Puts up somewhat of a barrier to entry air, but I guarantee you a terror cells bitcoin. "Some time ago about a year ago, or maybe two years ago, twitter introduced time based one time passwords google authenticated as most people know that mechanism where you have an authentic eater APP on a mobile device, and that gives you six digit codes to log in as to factor, which is much more secure than SMS SMS of course can be hijacked if your Sim Card is hijacked, so a lot of people were speculating all of these different methods of attack to me. It seems unlikely that accounts that are very familiar with some checking because. Because it happens a lot in crypto and has had a lot of high profile. Reporting would have SMS. It also seemed unlikely that even if they did that, someone was able to Sim Jack phones from big accounts across two different continents, at least because some of these accounts are china-based or singapore-based, some are europe-based. Some are a us-based that involve several different phone carriers in different countries all done within a matter of hours. It seemed to me very unlikely that I would be the case so assuming that they did have hardware two factor authentication. Or at least an authentic eater op, you can't really steal a password. That's not enough. So then, if the account security is likely to be quite secure, what are the other avenues someone can get in? The next most likely mechanism of attack would be API's so twitter has API's that allow various social media, aggregate or sites to post so that whole team of people can schedule and review and posts to multiple platforms similtaneously I. Use platforms like that, too. It allows me to work with a team of people and collaborate on what we post and schedule it out in advance. So. When you see a personal message from me, his personal, but when you see an with like I'm doing this video on Saturday, you know that's scheduled in advance and it's posted automatically. Are, not sitting there, attaching images and typing in Hashtags in real time. These services of course access the twitter API using off which is a nation protocol. It's the same protocol that's us when you log into a site using your google account and it redirects. You gets an encrypted challenge response message from uses that antedates into sight. And these gain full access the twitter time and presented in some of the site. You're probably familiar with things like hoot, sweet and buffer, sensible and various other sites like that now. These sites are not always as well secured. So that was my immediate suspicion. Because from there you can easily post the message, and if that site security isn't a strong with two factor, etc, I assumed. had been compromised than because there are only a handful of social media postings services eight. It was quite possible that all of these disparate companies were using the sang. Then the attack continued to escalate. One of the things that was noticeable was that the tweets that will come out? Were saying twitter web APP. Now when you have an off service that is posting remotely through the API. It has a clear identifier, says twitter for iphone, says hoot suite, it says some social media, posting or something like that. It doesn't say twitter web up. So my immediate suspicion was that this was a browser extension again much easier to compromise it. Browser extension that is a common single point of failure across all of these different accounts, and would have access to twitter web API to post on behalf or maybe sore credentials for users. There are a lot of sloppy browser extensions out there and then people started talking about the possibility of zero day browser exploit now. That'd be a very serious problem. Because Zero Browser, exploit effectively means that someone was compromising browsers through some click through mechanism, revolt, execution, or something like that and hijacking credentials from inside the browser secure store. That's a very serious. Because I would affect not just twitter, but then again it was only happening on twitter. And why would you use a zero day? Browser exploit that can be enormously powerful to hack only one site twitter, and then to use it to do this silly. Nigerian scam. I'm using the term Nigerian scam because Nigerians have anything to do with us, but because this type of scam originated with the Nigerian Prince Story, I mean it's a story, actually the we've seen repeat over and over and over again for two decades exactly I was reading through some kind of gaming coverage of this and many of them are likening it to scams that. That have been pulled in Yvonne Line, which is a popular sort of Laissez Faire, M., o. and ruined scape, also, which is really like a mostly for kids type of environment, and again like seven years ago. Apparently there was a rash of this type of give your money and I'll give you double back and again of course in crypto currency. We've seen this since.

Hack on famous Twitter accounts raises national security concerns

"Let's see here. What happened over the week. A little thing called a twitter hack. Oh that was wild now. I know for most people. Twitter is not important. Twitter is not. You know a major part of people's lives. facebook is maybe instagram is. Some of the some people like twitter. You know, but really it's. The reason twitter has outsized importance. well, it's a number of reasons. One is because a lot of journalists use it and you know they're always paying attention. As if the state, the outrage storms on twitter make a a difference which they don't. Not at all. The other reason is because the president uses it is It is his chief. I. Think is chief form of communication. With the public. He's actually you know executed presidential decrees on the tweets. So it's important for that reason. If you know if no one else were on twitter, it would be important to follow twitter just to see what the president trump saying. There are other reasons to be on there, but that you know so, it has. An importance beyond its its actual. Importance in the world because you know there's about three hundred million users, but you know in the US maybe I don't know one in five people are even aware of it or use it. My that's that's by gas. I bet it's even smaller than that. However when there is a twitter hack. It's a big deal. and. In fact, it was a little weird. About about one what say one o'clock, Pacific Time Four PM Eastern on Wednesday. All of a sudden. These tweets start showing up. At first is just on Bitcoin. Accounts like by Nance. Hey, in because of Kovic, nineteen I. Want to give back to my community every bitcoin bitcoin. I have to explain I. Guess you probably heard of it as crypto currency, it's a currency. that has kind of a made up value. All currency does but. Kind of made up right now. It's almost ten thousand dollars per bitcoin. you can buy bitcoin with American dollars or other dollars or other you know currencies, or you can generate it. Most people can't and don't have the ability to generate because it takes a lot of power. It's so expensive in terms of electricity that you can only do it if if you like live in a hydroelectric dam. which sounds like hyperbole except that that's where a lot of these bitcoin miners live actually in hydroelectric dams and other places where the cost of energy is low to nothing. So you can't make it that way. Young people can give it to you in exchange. You create a wallet I have a Wallet Bitcoin Wall and I forgot my password, so it's not much good to me. Seven bitcoins in there s a lot of money. But I don I can't get to them. That's all right. They're safes. They're mostly. Every bitcoin wallet has a unique number associated with it. Not Name knotted addressed on a phone number. No, no identifiable information, just a number. So it's widely used by bad guys, hackers and others to exchange value so this tweet on binds bitcoin exchange, said in because a covert I want to give back to my community for every bitcoin. You send this address again this long number this anonymous address. I will send you double back. For. Give me ten thousand I'll give you twenty one. Now, you'd have to be an idiot to do it. Right because come on. Except that all of a sudden, some other very big. Accounts. Start tweeting similar things. The number one account on twitter is Barack, Obama. Followers, his account tweets it. Joe, Biden's account tweets it. Elon Musk tweets it. Wow some big names here. Bill Gates Apple Computer Apple tweets it. Apple's got a lot of money. Because, we really appreciate our community. We'd like to give back tweet. US, send us a a bitcoin. We'll send you to. Up to some people up to bill, Gates that up to fifty million dollars. It's not Bill Gates or apple or the Joe Binder. Barack Obama not all of these about thirty. High Profile verified accounts had been hacked. Obviously of course bright most people would get that. Apparently, it's hard to tell with Bitcoin, but you can look at an address and see how much money's coming around one hundred thousand dollars came in. But. It's hard to tell because you can't tell the source, so it could be the hacker himself. Putting money in from another account to make it look like you just don't know. So wasn't a huge score. How did this happen? Everybody's freaking out now. I, it's pretty obvious immediately. Anybody understands how this stuff works. That, this was a serious hack. Because in the past we've seen account takeovers onesie twosies. and you know. I think he lon Musk's account has been hacked. Other People's accounts have been hacked. You guessed the password, or you know things happen but not this many and not as many high profile accounts that are in all likelihood highly protected. With real security behind them like multi factor authentication. RIGHT IF YOU'RE A. Presidential candidate, for instance like Joe, Biden probably using the strongest security available. Almost certainly. So, it couldn't be that. The password was gaster was weaker, monkey, one, two three and everybody guessed it couldn't be that. So it was immediately apparent, something major and much more serious. was going on. Something like. perhaps. And! We've seen this once before actually several times before maybe. A malicious insider at twitter and employee, perhaps who that would be bad. There was a contractor about three years ago. Who On leaving the company? Disabled President Trump's account for about a minute. With I, mean they caught on pretty quick? Twitter reacted quickly shutting down all verified accounts. Of what we call a brute force protect you know. They just said No. Whatever we're GONNA. We don't know what's going on, so we're just going. And as time has gone by the last few days, we've kind of learned. More and more twitter not been completely forthcoming, but others have. So. There's a group of people out there. WHO TRADE IN! Short twitter handles. They call og original gangster twitter handles usually single letter. Twitter handles. Like at six there is such one. It was hacked. Effect it's really bad. I'm glad I didn't when I sign up for twitter in the in the very earliest days. Say, I want Leo, because I would be a target I didn't use that. He's that Leo LaPorte, but thank goodness because I would have been a target anybody with a really short name and I have friends who have really short names. They're at risk because there's a whole group of people who collect these who trade them and you can sell them for lots of money. These people. Were watching what was going on. And we're in fact, probably connected to the hack. They've actually been in touch. Believe it or not with the New York Times. and. They've showed him screen shots and stuff and they said yeah. We know what went on. We know what went on, and it's a guy named Kirk. Probably not is really all it's great. It sounds like a real name Kirk. A guy named Kirk. WHO and Kirk is not talking to your times, but the people around him are who, probably in twitter admits this socially engineered tricked a twitter employees. Now as we look at, it actually looks like it might be something even more sinister. That somebody got into twitter's slack channel again. Another definition here, slack Zeh. Messaging Platform like what's APP or apple messages? You! Know your text messages, but it's one a lot of companies use. My company uses it for business chat. Apparently, twitter did a very stupid thing. They put. Credentials for logging in. To their admin dashboard. This is you know what they called God. Mode the ability to log into this system. You could change things you could tweet on people's behalves. You could change passwords. This is a powerful tool that should be not available to contractors, not available to low level employees should only be available to the most trusted employees apparently. According to Brian, Krebs and other security researchers and these hacker groups that were communicating with the New York Times. They didn't secure this slack channel. And the credentials. Got Out. And Kirk, who is not well known in hacker channels apparently got access to the Adleman this makes sense the admin dashboard. Because how else would somebody do this so quickly to so many M- much more security accounts. It's also extremely disturbing fortunately. All Kirk did is put up some DOPEY SPAM At least as far as we know, and this is part of the problem as far as we know, some dopey span said, send me money effectively. Nobody fell for that very few. But What else could have done? He could have tweeted out his president trump. Probably we don't know what protections extra protections there are. There probably are some nice account. or other world leaders account saying you know the countdown gun. Nuclear War starts in five minutes. That would be disturbing. It would have a long-term impact they could also, and it's apparently the case. Download all. Previous tweets and even direct messages private stuff, nobody any with any brains uses twitter's private messaging for anything, important or secure. If you have been stopped. Because, apparently, some of that was downloaded. And it by the way wouldn't just be verified accounts high profile. Be Any account. So we don't really know, twitter's trying to figure it out right now. and they have logs and stuff. They may actually be able to figure out what happened. We don't know how much was stolen. It could be the. This. bitcoin scam was just A. MISDIRECTION! Pay No attention to what I'm really doing. We don't know. So. This is a significant issue in many ways. Twitter's fixed it. I. I have about I, don't I'm not a huge twitter percents using it since day one and I about a half million followers. But makes it concerns me and everybody who uses twitter and it should. Because twitter's security has been lax, and is still apparently lacks enough that somebody could walk wander in and do this and tweet on Joe Biden's account and Barack Obama's account. That's a significant problem. Even more significant because the president uses this as his. Bully pulpit. There's some real concern about that. And other world leaders do that. There's some real concern about that. Twitter we'll try to fix this. I think it's very clear you should not any. No one should use twitter for anything important ever again.

FBI Investigates Twitter Cyberattack

"FBI is investigating yesterday's widespread twitter attack that we told you about this morning. Hackers took over an array of high profile accounts and posted messages telling users that if they sent bitcoin to a crypto currency account double, that amount would be sent back to them joining me to discuss. Is Wsj heard on the street columnist Dan Gallagher? Dan I. We've seen security breaches on twitter before. Why was Wednesday's attack different while I think it's because you'll pass. Breaches tended to either be very focused on like when Jack Dorsey. His account got hacked last year and somebody sent these awful racist tweets. And that was that was bad, but that was kind of a singular incident. This one was bad because it took so many high profile names. You Know Barack Obama Bill Gates He Wan Mosque Joe Biden and sent. This clearly kind of prank ish, amateurish attempt to score some money, but apparently worked. As we saw the account that was attached to Biden's tweet. For instance seem to have gotten more than one hundred thousand dollars worth of Bitcoin so. Some people somewhere saw these things and decided. Hey, I'm going to do. What other damage may have been done besides the spreading of these fraudulent messages? That's a good question. Hint that there might have been other damaged on that. We don't see publicly. That too is scary, but I think what made this attack. Kind of a big deal was was more about the how it raised all these. What s you know? What if the hackers took these big named accounts and actually did something more malicious than some scheme to get some money you can imagine there's high profile. Political leaders who use twitter business leaders use twitter, and not everybody who uses twitter uses it in a responsible way, so you have the possibility that somebody could tweet something that would be honestly destabilizing globally is actually a real. A feasible concept, and that's what's scary. In your column, you write that Twitter's biggest strength is also its biggest weakness. What do you mean by that? Well I think what this showed. Is that you know it's? It's one thing to have this phone or ability. They've discovered and they'll. They'll certainly were to try to. figure out what went wrong and prevent it from happening in the future. Because a lot rides on that for them, but the problem again is this shows how quickly you know. Bad and misleading militia information can spread in an instant, and that's not really a bug in the twitter program. That's actually twitter's designed to the seminary information quickly broadly, and almost without regard to the information is is good or not. You know, and it has good intentions behind it so. I think that's where you know. Obviously twitter appeals to its users, because of the way can spread information you know, but again that very feet that very design makes it possible for things like this to happen and be potentially very damaging. What impact could this have on twitter's business and twitter's stock price? What tends to happen in these things I think investors look at something like this. You know it gives them some worry because advertisers see this kind of thing and say maybe I'm not going to use twitter as much that could be. That could have business consequence for the company, but both twitter and And facebook already kind of dealing with that consequence right now. The stocks have really underperformed this year because we're seeing a growing number of advertisers, deciding to express concern about you know how these platforms are used for misinformation in harmful information, and so I think that concerns kind of baked into the stock price and I think that's probably why he didn't see a big reaction this morning, because it's their bit, and then beyond that it's kind of hard for investors to evaluate you know. Does twitter ultimately going to do what how would that possibly impact its appeal to advertisers? Those are those are still unknowns. All right, Dan. Thank you so much for joining us.

"I don't fear gravity. So it would make sense. Oh, I got. I got one for you. Did you ever do you ever get worried when you cupping bitcoin address the accident, we hit a key? And you don't realize you send it to the wrong address. I have news for you. Because bitcoin addresses checks. Yeah. So if you get one character wrong, it won't be a successful transaction ever. It won't go to address the bitcoin nodes. We'll check like the last. I think I don't know does as of four three three or four bites of the code is actually the check some of the public. And so it takes that off checks to make sure that the key is correct. Based on the previous part of the thing. And if it's not it'll project the transaction. So it'll just sit in the pool for a while. And then get rejected at some point different. Now, if you not do that. Why don't theory of address do that check? They there's a check some associated with the capitalization of the letters. So there is a form of check summing. But it doesn't do it the same way if not as robust why they did it. I'm not sure I want to interview who's lost so much theory because they got one character wrong. You'll never get them because they dove off. Didn't nose dive off of them bridge. Somebody stupid ways to lose money in the space. Crazy. Yeah. Yeah. It's parts of the darker. That I have is is in my my antivirus. So what a computer doesn't update in this accident copied the wrong address? Well, I haven't couple the wrong address, my computer's been compromised, and I pay in address in and it's wrong. I think that's international because I'm relatively in a safe when it comes to antivirus and checking bits and pieces, but I'm always worried that some fucking thing is going to steal my bitcoin. How many times you check back and forth, and you're like sending a transaction one that you actually put into action the window dot copied. I'll yeah, I'll I'll often I'll copy I'll copy it into text copied into what I'll copy it onto a page. And then usually I'll be like, yeah. Okay. I haven't fucked it up. I do the same thing. I still like I still have kinda worried that I've I've somehow stood up the copy and paste method, and that's so much to lose the money. But more like I'm not going to get done when I was trying to get done and have to spend the rest of their life. An inconvenience more money using using crypto the the more time slows down when you're sending over here. Yeah. It's so fast. Once you actually get the transaction done. But it takes a while to get that transaction. Correct. The one point when I when I used to trade, many moons ago and some of those transactions were little bit larger than like, you know, you're sending back and forth. Playstation four's. Right. It's not they're not tiny transactions. But every time you do it is just like an and people talk to you doing it mobile phone because you know, of these extreme and people are trying to talk to you. And you just like what would you like d-? What are you even listening to us? And I'm like, dude, I am in my own book and world right now just need to make sure I didn't send three PlayStation four somewhere and not back. All right. So. I guess some news for you d the sixty million light coin has just been mind, and we contributed to that..

"On their schedule c like self employment income but then for our purposes calculating capital gains and losses it says if they buy a bitcoin that day so if they got paid a bitcoin every friday then it's worth a thousand dollars they recognize that thousand dollars in income on their self employment and then they'll have expenses offset against that you know we have a reporter who has a situation like this where she's always painted in bitcoin and then but then when she eventually cells that bitcoin we use the cost basis that's determined the day she received it when she year radically bought it because she would have been paid us dollars and said she was paid bitcoin source and so our software does all of that but that's more of the more of a complicated tax situation i was glad to hear you said when transfer and his vague you guys will actually ask if it was a spend or transfer and i i guess is it the same way with money coming into a wallet if you would ask was that income or transfer yeah exactly okay well that's that sounds perfect so i've got a question that i assume anyone kind of who's been involved with the let's talk bitcoin network a question i was soon many would have i don't know if people think about taxes like i do i feel pretty unique i guess maybe i'll even ask you there's always that i don't know if it's a rumor truth at eight hundred people filed crypto taxes between twenty thirteen in two thousand fifteen are you familiar with that oh yeah do you believe that to be true i mean to be honest from talking to accountants and who have been filing users taxes since then i've heard of enough people who say oh for sure it's been much higher than that i alone did three hundred or whatever that i feel like it's very unlikely that it's true.

"While in i think you're right on the surface uh about the institutional capital targeting big one because it has futures it may have in etf coming up in other things but i mean those things are in a sense predicated on the usefulness of bitcoin and if the usefulness goes away those things who go way too i mean neto the capital could evaporate if bitcoin can't prove itself to be while useful in so i mean i'm just wondering kind of getting back to the gold thing you know ironically i think you could make a at least an analogy that site chains herb indicate bitcoin is gold because much as in real life gold uh you know gold was the money but you had circulating currency on top of it that substituted for that's almost sort of like side chains on a on bitcoin but layer crew abstraction that was required in order to make all all work at money and when i look at bitcoin court thursday layer to obstruction let's required in order to make bitcoin core work as money so i i think the you know if you're looking produced took gold at literally how that switching will and i agree with that to a large extent accept will horse won it has happened yet in to um you know it would make it a digital gold with that layer to abstraction but at the same time uh until again until it happens how how is bitcoin like gold i mean it it it is like it appears like gold on the surface but i think it's inverted uh in the sense of it will go goal did circulated the currency to some extent than it got these little the second layer abstraction of currency money substitutes and didn't circulate so much um and if it would just kind of sit there and occasionally move around like you said uh there can be high transaction costs for movie yet but you don't gold became what it was because it had used value whereas bitcoin declare that you.

"On today's episode let's start bitcoin i'm your wit stephanie murphy hello andrey's at novelist hey everyone and jonathan moyo in pa how how how happy holidays everybody well as a pretty good year so far let's see what 2018 brings and in this time of year with the price of bitcoin skyrocketing and more and more people coming in and looking at this thing the we've been interested in for bunch years now the question that's been coming up a lot is how you actually use bitcoin in this type of environment where there's so much demand for the block shane there's so much demand for making transactions and many people who are just kind of getting interested now are having their first experiences with bitcoin through centralized exchanges like coin base as a new user of bitcoin how should people be using bitcoin right now well that's an interesting question adam because why was noticing several merchants were deactivating their payment option for taking bitcoin as a payment legacy bitcoin i mean as a payment we like steam the gaming platform a couple of others and even dick pay which is the secondlargest or that one of the two largest payment processors for bitcoin announced that they were going to be listen payments and other cryptocurrencies besides legacy bitcoin like they're starting with bitcoin cash and they've already supporting it in their software copay which is a multi sick wallet so i thought that was very interesting i've seen people complaining about bitcoin fees for a very long time probably about the last year or so that was when i noticed it starting to affect me like when i was sending pickering transactions i was starting to notice the fees creeping up in it getting a little bit more obviously to be a problem but now i mean it's just getting worse and worse people are mad and they're taking that out by jumping ship to other cryptocurrencies besides legacy bitcoin some people are just saying all right well then i won't spend it all just hold it and other people are like what's going on i am so confused so i dunno i mean there's multiple strategies to exist in any kind of environment you know like we see different species evolved to take advantage of different environment.

"Real way to get out because there are trust issues if they were to issue their own currency you can actually assuage a lot of that by saying our april this is how much bitcoin corner holding this is the currency were printing this currency is backed by this bitcoin and if you want to make your currency deflationary then you peg to a specific bitcoin amount of bitcoin and if you wanna make it not deflationary than you say this is this many you know a dollars or pounds or whatever kind of benchmark you want worth of bitcoin at any given time in a serb redeemable fashion and you could actually have a really interesting system where governments that have repeated histories of driving their currencies into the ground actually can issue functional currencies be constrained by that because there is much more transparency than in a gold system and still benefit as a government as an entity as a country from the appreciation of bitcoin over time yeah we've we've just enter a whole rallumer for cryptocurrencies for bitcoin itself for the broader space air since the geopolitical stage thanks are gonna keep increasing and the drama is going to keep increasing but so is the value of decentralisation censorship resistance and neutrality under those pressures those things become very very valuable thanks for listening to this episode of let's talk bitcoin's this episode was sponsored by easy dn scom content for today's show was provoked by stephanie andreas jonathan and adam this episode was edited by matthews up can and featured music by joerg rubens and the new time any questions or comments imo adam at let's talk bitcoin dot com.

"Now i think in the runup to bitcoin gold we saw novel one of those and i think we're gonna see it four cyclic too lax which is people are going to even if they don't believe this is going to be successful even if they they think set to x will not succeed in in doing anything more the bitcoin cash that they still wall on the free coins so why the hell not and that means a lot more people are going to try and set up their own wallets gain independence and autonomy and control over their own keys and ironically the thing that does is all the people who may have been diversified in ulsan icl is in tolkien's and whatever say okay hang on a second just for this week i'm going to sell all of that style from buy into bitcoin's that can maximise might bounty allocation and i think that's driving some of the price increase and some of the movement from all into bitcoin it's the fear of missing out the airdrop airdropped form all the excitement about all coins the excitement about stuff that's other than bitcoin things that are smaller than bitcoin and so have a greater potential to kind of expand has really always been something that at least in bitcoin became the big cryptocurrency when that actually you know when that actually started a matter that bitcoin is largely missed out on you know it it gets used as the interface by which people get into these things but it has never directly benefited from that affect itself outside of kind of the really early minor stage so i think that's a really kind of exciting prospect that might make bitcoin a bit more an exciting purchased a simply because now it seems to be throwing would look a lot like you know cryptocurrency dividends if you want to call that like bitcoin didn't change.
