"That's so cheap. And it's so sweet that they don't actually want any money. They just want to pass on these plants, or they want to make space from more plants. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah, go to a local meeting and pick up some plants there rather than the supermarket. Pretty cool too. As long as you re pop them. Yeah. Some really Gritty style. That's the main thing you want the water to just fly through. And then to dry up quite quick. The ones that you get from supermarkets tend to be potted and stuff. Because they've come from like incredible temperature controlled, humidity controlled greenhouses. There are out to grow in that stuff, but at home they don't do well. Indeed. Well, that's great advice and you're right. Join the BCS and get along to some of those cactus cells. So it's a generous world, and once you get into it, as you demonstrate very well, you just explode a little bit, doesn't it? But in a great way. I think the best thing to do is grow them in a greenhouse, it's fantastic thing to do. They grow in this country in particular, they grow so well in a greenhouse. There's not much to it. But I think the trick is get one greenhouse and when it gets full, that's it. Get rid of them. Yeah. Don't just keep getting more and more and more greenhouses. Unless you want to, that's cool too, but you don't have to have millions. No. I'll remind you of that. Next time I come and see you. That's my advice then. Not necessarily taking it myself. Well, that's the best kind of advice I always think. Well, it's been lovely to meet you Martin and thank you so much for giving me this tour of your wonderful collection and continue rocking our world with your wonderful Instagram content because I always look at it because I know I'm not going to get I just I'm so bored of that like Instagram music like the one the tracks that you always hear and everything and whenever I get onto one of your stories or something I know

"Has that given you time to have a think about your one? I think what truly got me hooked is it's not necessarily even my favorite plant now, but what really kind of blew me away when I had those first few plants is we had this. This oxygen and you see that a lot just kind of generally around you might see them in takeaway windows, et cetera and most of the year is this green ball with some spikes on. It's not the most showy and then over a course of around a week, it will produce a flower of absolute magnificent proportions, sometimes the trumpet can be kind of nearing a foot long. It opens out into this pinky white flower and the smell is fantastic. And just seeing, you know, there's not many houseplants in which you see such rapid production of a flower, it flowers, it doesn't flow for long, and then it dies down. That was one of the things that got me hoping there's just such a spectacle and that's really special. And I think for someone wanting to get involved, can I get hooked to that gateway drug? I think getting a plant that is going to reward you relatively reliable with flowers is very nice. It gives you that digital reward and for quite a lot of people to start off with they're not. You know, when I was starting off, there was a few plants I've said, oh, that's looking nice. Yeah. And then I'd realize a few months later, it's been dead for a while. It was hollow on the inside. And you know, at least with a flower implant, you know. Something like reduction, like reboot, the nice and cold hard, it'll take quite a bit of stick, really. And they'll produce enormous amounts of very colorful. You've got all these wonderful hybrids, pinks, yellows, purples, reds, everything. I think yeah, something like that will produce flowers quite reliably. In quite immense numbers, yeah, it's kind of a way of getting you in something you can really kind of watch and fold before you. I don't have enough oxygen, but I do have sub denu data, which is the I think it's sometimes called the domino cactus or the Easter lily cactus. I mean, I love the flower on that, which is a white one. I always think it smells like personal washing laundry liquid, laundry powder. Not agree with that. Yeah. I don't know what oxygen smells like, but I agree with you. Those dramatic flowers. Bang for your buck, you are getting plenty of it with that. And you can really enjoy those flowers. I will say just about them as one last point is that they're relatively nocturnal. And so when you come home from work, that's actually when it's coming into its own, because pollinated by things like moths. But yeah, that's another kind of another thing about them is that when you come in from work, you've still got the flowering to come. Well, you can have it. You can have a flowering party where you sit up all night looking at your beautiful beautiful I know people who've done that with the Queen of the night, which is one of the forest cacti. Staying up all night watching it flower. I mean, like who needs TV? What a show. Well, it's been great to talk to you, Greg. Thank you so much for chatting to me and I'm really excited to see where the BCS ends up going and I also thank you for stepping up because I know that doing these kind of roles for a charity like a plant society is hard work and there's always going to be people who want you to pull you in different directions. So I'm sure it's going to be a lot of hard work. But best of luck with your tenure as chairman. Thank you very much, Jen. Thank you so much for having me on your podcast today. The first time I've been interviewed for a podcast so it's quite an honor. Oh, great. Well, I'll put all the details in the show notes for how to join the society and all that jazz. It's great value. I should also say it's really good value. I think is it still about 15 pounds? Am I right there on my out of date? It's a really good value membership. That is the current price, yes. Yeah, it's great value. And as you say, the journal is superb. So I always encourage listeners to have a look at joining plants societies. They are absolutely brilliant resources..

"Guess wet is the enemy with many of them. Yeah, and yet sometimes I break the fundamental, the golden rule in grown cacti, on heated in the greenhouse and so there's a couple of species in particular, so for example my classic actor strasser that, you know, a big silver torch kind of cactus that you come across in garden centers, et cetera. I'll give that a bit of water in January, and it'll keep its roots, and it'll keep screaming point. And there's a beautiful captive malaria Luther, one of my I think it's my favorite catch a species. It's this incredibly small, it's got this very black body with these long tubercles, white on the end, and they have these gorgeous purple flowers. And I give them a sprinkle of water in February, even if it's cold and they pull through. And certainly for anyone listening, I would not use that as a general yardstick, but do have a talk to people and see if there are any particular requirements. And if there are any kind of exceptions to the rules in terms of watering in the winter. What's your vision for the future of the BCS? I kind of want to build on what has been started in taking the site, keeping the very essence of the site. Things that work incredibly well in the science here is a beautiful journal, the shows that are put on by the show's committee and other branches or zones throughout the country are phenomenal. The organization involved at this fantastic. But find ways of bringing this to a wider audience. So for me, it's showing how we fit as a modern society into a world where you can easily go on Facebook or on Instagram or on Google and get information upon at a click of your fingers for free. And show how we are set up apart from that in being able to offer a more personal experience and often a far more knowledgeable experience than if you just Google to plant. And so in the first few months and the first year, I really want to kind of focus on the outward facing aspects of our society, kind of getting order, how we can align with other kind of modern charities, and how they run things sort out a website that means that we can, when people Googlers, they come across a fresh website that entices them in and introduce them to our society. I think I want to forge links and really showcase what we have offer on offer in terms of our charitable objectives. We are a charity. And we have to be very, very wary of what our purpose is. To spread awareness of cultivation and research and conservation and reach out to, for example, university students who might not be aware of the travel grants that we offer or the ability to apply to the BSS to run your own conservation project on cacti succulents. Fundamentally, I don't want to change what the society is about, which is people enjoying plants and being able to pass on. To Garner huge amounts of information from incredible experience members. Through our public facing aspect of that, kind of attract them and let them know that we are here and that hopefully in the future when you talk to people at an RHS show or a garden center or your local plant swap or on Facebook, people know it resistant there, that's not the first time that they've heard of us and that we've managed to kind of get out there and spread the word that we are a useful and productive force in horticulture and the cactus and supplement world. If you were trying to pitch to somebody, the idea of joining the BCS, how would you say in describing a couple of sentences what you get from becoming a member? I think joining the beta S it's the perfect marriage of the hobby that you're already interested in in a topic in a group of plants that are inherently fascinating. You know, it's a lot easier to entice people in of capturing succulents than it is with pine trees or ferns, I'm sorry for the third lovers out there, but I do believe that is true. Fern lovers switching off. Sorry, bracings have dropped by 90%. I'm sorry. But I think the key bit is the personal, the personal human aspect of being part of a community of growers. And I think that is what sets us apart from words just written on websites. After the horrible years, last couple of years, we've all had, I think people are more ready than ever to actually turn off the TV and see people in real life and do real things together. And I think perhaps before the pandemic, there was a certain slide towards is everything going to be online and we just go home after working the 9 to 5 and just consume media through whatever source that is. And I think the society offers a real opportunity for people to have fun and feel part of a community, whether a community to enjoy these plants and ultimately, I think people will learn and do learn a lot more if they're involved in that kind of if you've got friends in the hobby and you're looking forward to your branch meeting or your next show or your next zoom talk discussion. Just because things are online, I do want to stress just because things are online, just not make them inherently bad in any way. And that you can still get a lot of social interaction from things like your brand Zoom meetings. And I think there are real lifeline to people, particularly some members who maybe haven't used things like Zoom before the society. The pandemic came along and they were still able to see their friends and talk to them face to face about a topic they loved. And I think that's kind of what sets us apart from, as I said, just something that isn't a specialist kind of plant society. Just on a final note, if somebody is listening to this and thinking, well, I'm not really into cacti and succulents. I'm not really that kind of grower. Is there one succulent that you can say to people? This can be your gateway drug to the world of cacti and succulents. Is there something that you believe nobody can resist because it's just the best thing to grow? I'm putting you on the spot there. I know what I would answer if I was going to answer this question, but I'd love to hear what you think. Wow. This really is a task. Well, let me tell you what my one is and then that gives you some thinking time because I haven't given you this question beforehand. I think the one that really is a showstopper for me is one that lots of people kill, but I still think it's absolutely fascinating and the string of beads or string of pearls, I mean, I'm biased because I've written the chapter of my upcoming book about this plant, but I just think it's just, it looks amazing. It's got amazing habits. And you just can't fail to look at it and find it fascinating. So for me, although I know a lot of people moan that they find it difficult to keep alive. For me, that one is an absolute showstopper and I am eyeing up the variegated form at the moment because it seems to be becoming a lot more widely available and wondering if I should add it to my collection, but I have suspect it's probably slightly more difficult than the plain green one, so I'm slightly hesitant..

"The door to how actually there's more than just, you know, a tall spike you on and around spiky one and there's round non spiky ones and round tall ones. And then you grow into it and it's a part of the pun and yeah and it's opened my mind to how the thousands and thousands of different plants and how they're all different and different environments and often these environments can have kind of a cow incubation with our homes. So yeah, as part of my chairmanship, I would like to kind of expose just how versatile our plants are, both in a greenhouse and on the windowsill or in a cold frame or in a bright office. And yeah, I'd like to share my passion for that. I think it's one of these things where it's a good balance between appreciating those older members and their vast experience, but also not making younger members feel like they're not part of things just because as you say they don't have a massive greenhouse with hundreds of one particular genus or something, there is room for everyone in the society and certainly when I've been to events, you know, I've been made very welcome and I do like to sort of just drain the brains of those older members with loads of experience because that's what I'm there for to learn, which is great. Have you got a particular type of cactus or succulent that you're particularly fond of that you specialize in or are you a bit of a Jack of all trades? So I suppose my journey through cacti and succulents as it's evolved and I've kind of learned what I can or can not grow. So when I first jumped inside it I had an absolute fascination for mella cacti, so I bought a few Miller capped, you know, little seedling ones and some of the ones you can get in will tal and I killed them quite quick really. Because you know I was actually watering them enough. They're like a bit of a bit of moisture. They like it warm and so yeah, when I got my first little greenhouse not properly and I was just kind of one of these pop up things that you get from the DIY stuff, 15 pounds and I had quite a few deaths either on my windowsill and I started to learn just how actually there was a bit of a bit of a knack to it really and the importance of looking into how the plants grow and where they grow and initially maybe a little bit of a naivety about watering and things like that. Just for those of us who are not familiar with the genus melocactus, can you tell me a bit about them? A mellow character, I believe it stems from the get nickname Mellon cactus as well and essentially you've got kind of a big round body and so as they grow, they've got this big round spiky body and they kind of look like a typical globular characters and then as they become kind of adult so to say from their center they produce this thing called a surveillance and what this is is this essential kind of a cylinder that grows from the center of cactus and it's often a color such as red or white and that's from where the plants flower. So they're quite different in comparison to a lot of other cacti because the adults so to say and the babies look very different whereas if you grow an echo cactus croissant and you can see mother and child how they look quite similar is this they look very certain way when they're young and then as they reach maturity and get to Florida they form this what we call so failing this kind of red kind of blob coming out the top of them. And so yeah, they're from places like Cuba and Brazil and they love the heat you can get them in beaches and things like that and if you take them much below kind of 10°C they'll die quite quickly and quite easily. Quite a lot of mella cacti are endangered because only the big adults can start flowering and thrown out seed and so if you get those wiped out you've then got to wait quite a lot of years before you've got kind of a generation that can produce seeds and seedlings onwards from that. So yeah, that was one example of kind of yeah, I wasn't watering mine enough or I'd let them go to, I don't think they'll still be okay in the polytunnel I had outside 'cause it's only September. It's only October. I'll bring them in when it's really cold and they lose their roots. You get to them and they've lost their roots and now a lot better growing them now. I have them inside, but this really shaped kind of the kind of plants I was I was growing and from then I was a lot more particular about just finding things that were going to be particularly cold hardy. In my greenhouse at all, I'm also relatively limited for space. I don't have a huge collection. My greenhouse is 6 foot by four foot. And so again, this is kind of really guided. The kind of plants I grow, so things that aren't in a rush to be filling a 5 inch pot anytime soon. So I grow lots of cold hardy, plants, so things from the American plains, things that will take some frost like echinacea and things like that. I saw a discussion, I think it was on the BCS Facebook group about growers who have heated their greenhouses in past winters, looking at that again in the light of the way fuel bills are going up at the minute. I wonder how that's going to affect the hobby in future. That's definitely the case. I've spoken to members who have energy bills going into the several hundreds of pounds and the cost of energy is certainly where we like it or not. It's certainly going to force certainly how we grow our plants. I do have quite a few plants that aren't cold hard in that I move into the house over winter, but that's a lot more limited space. You know, it's just some winter sills et cetera rather than a whole greenhouse. And yeah, I think you're growing Brazilian plants or plants, some different types of plants with the Caribbean, et cetera. You can or African, you phobias, things like that, suit a lithos as well. They need a lot of heat, you know, ten, 15°C, which to heat a greenhouse, that is going to be astronomical in price. These plants are quite often, I find that a lot more cold harder than maybe we initially think, like there's originally when I started my cold harder greenhouse, I thought it was just going to be some pontier and some echinacea and things that were definitely kind of tried and tested could go down to -15. And that was a lot kind of really. But really, I find that there's a general rule. In particular, and a lot of lithops, I have taken through many winters now completely unheated. I think there's a lot to be said about ventilation. My greenhouse is quite small, but that means that when I have a clear day comes along in the autumn or the winter, I'll throw that door open, I'll put the window open and there's a lot of air movement and I think that's really, if not more important than temperature, the movement of air. So I think you can have a real good play around with your conditions and you'd be surprised. What can survive? Really? I think people think lift ops look terribly sort of fragile somehow and want to sort of bring them inside, but certainly I mean, I don't have many. I think I've got one or two and once I've grown from seed and I was thinking, gosh, they're so tiny, having been grown from seed, but actually they were absolutely fine. They've been fine outside. And as you say, it's more about air circulation and also what's going on with the roots in terms of dryness, I think, that you can do things you can do to make sure they'll have their best chance of surviving. I.

"Alabama and the BCS championship game. But you got to understand those teams are significantly less talented than the other teams in the playoff or into BCS case, Alabama. So to me, I think that you put him in a situation where you can get that kind of stop to your talent. He's going to do some damage at LSU. I do think he's going to win a national championship on the Bayou. Did I hear that correctly? Barrett solely picking LSU to do good things? I did this to you. That didn't work out to us. That was the only time that I picked them to do well though. This is now, too. This is not a second time that I've been on board a fellowship. Although I will not, again, not next to your Paul, maybe next year, Paul. But in the future, I do think Brian Kelly go to international championships there. And we're just kidding. Barrett's Lee was, by the way, just for those of you keeping track, I know there's a lot of channel surfing right now. Auburn was just stopped on a fourth down. They held a lead into a minute ago. And with a little over two minutes ago, auburn now trails. 17, 13. This was a better question for two and a half minutes from now, but assuming sitting auburn does not stop Cincinnati and win this game, that would be what? O and three so far for the SEC? Yeah, ruby open three. You know, again, though, I don't put a whole lot of stock in conference records in both season really one way or the other. I wrote something a while back when the SEC was like 9 and two that it wasn't a compliment to the SEC either. They're all individual matchups. They all have separate issues. They all stand alone and now this day and age with opt outs and coaching changes and all that other stuff. You know, it's almost impossible to have a referendum one way or the other on an entire conference when every game sort of has its own DNA. So it would be disappointing. I'm sure Greg thank you and the rest of the SEC office would like to find a way to get the job done here, but I mean, look, I think the lines swung to Houston being favored like overnight. So, you know, is that does that matter all that much? Especially with two in the playoffs, but let me get to the more specific question and I realize all of this could change, although I doubt it will. But I remember sitting, I think we were in College Station and Brian harsh and auburn were riding in there. Still in contention for everything in the end of the season assuming this does not turn around here has been rather rough for the auburn tigers. Oh, no doubt. You know, a 6 win season a regular thick one regular season no matter what happened. At the end of this bowl game. But a 6 win regular season at auburn is unacceptable. I don't care if coaching transition, injuries, whatever. That is unacceptable, especially the way that it went down at the end of the regular season blowing the lead to Mississippi state, going well at 6 quarters without an offensive touchdown. Yeah, the game against Alabama was, look, that was the performance of a lifetime for that defense and they deserve all the credit in the world. But that still doesn't make up for the other 11 regular season games prior to that. So it does, I think it should bring concern at least a little bit to what Brian harsh vision is. I think letting go of Mike Bobo obviously to me is a sign that he recognizes that you have to be quick here. You had auburn. There's no time to waste if you think something's not going to work. You have to address it immediately. So I think in that regard, you know, he's done a good job, especially considering the way they closed and recruiting in the early signing theory too. But those things have to be done now because the team was so average or below average and in a lot of cases, mediocre. So it's unacceptable. It shouldn't happen. And it's going to have to turn around. It's not going to say it's going to be two and done, but there's going to be some pressure on him and deservedly so because this can't happen again. Yeah, and it is going to happen today auburn is going to lose to Cincinnati after holding the lead. Most of the second half, they will finish the season what 6 and 7 they are currently trailing 1713 and Cincinnati is just literally running out the clock. Let me get to the big game. The big games, Barrett, Saturday on Friday, excuse me. Alabama Cincinnati and obviously George and mission, your thoughts on those two games. Well, I think when you look at the first name between Cincinnati and Alabama, Alabama is going to be Cincinnati by 20 points or more. I mean, it is such a mismatch. I understand the thoughts Gardner and Kobe Bryant are solid cornerback really good cornerbacks actually. But there's still our safeties. There's still our nickelback. There's still a ton of talented players on that Alabama, wide receiving core tight ends, running back out of the backfield regardless. It's going to be impossible for them to slow down. And so I do think the Georgia game for Alabama was the sign that things have turned around. And they'll be able to keep rice on clean, keep them in the pocket, a lot like you was against Georgia. I think Michigan, Georgia, I'm missing Georgia's going to be a phenomenal game. I think it's going to be a close game, old school game, but those themes play a very similar brand of football. I do think that you will have more of a package and more availability for JP Daniels because I think at the end of the Alabama game, Georgia, I would say laid up, but they recognize that they had a little bit of a buffer, they understood that they could lose and still make a playoff. And so they wanted to see if that's in can throw them out of a hole. They found out that he can't, or at least did that day, so they have to have different ways and other options available JC Daniels will be it. So I think Georgia gets the job done, but I do think it'll be a close game. Barry, many, many thanks. A happy new year, we will talk to you as soon as this weekend wraps up. Thanks, Paul. Have a great step. So auburn has lost 1713 in the Birmingham bowl. They finish with 5 straight losses after a fast start and 6 and 7 in his first season at auburn, Missouri state will play tonight trying to reverse the ON three beginning for the auburn tigers. That's also the second loss to the AAC been a rough beginning. But we're not going to talk about it. We'll be right back. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Getting paid up to.

I don't know why this narrative continues to pop up when we're always in the games. No we haven't won a national championship. That's correct I'm not changing the record but we are there every single year and we are grinding it out just like everybody else. Twelve paul finebaum and joey galloway. Paul what is your reaction to brian. kelly's comments well. He not only has notre dame not won a national championship. They haven't even competed in these games. And i think that's really the issue here ryan but brian. Kelly is trying to lower the expectations even lower than they already are. Most people think alabama is going to completely viscera them friday afternoon. And i don't know how you could argue at that point. He's trying to bake into the cake. Listen we're we're a great program we're notre dame we're in the playoffs every year or two. We just can't win the big one. So don't blame me. Don't blame my players. It's a crazy approach. But he's just trying to keep his team calm before they walk into the slaughter friday afternoon it's astounding to me. If he's actually thinking that way the idea of don't worry guys. Were still good no matter what so joey. It makes me think to brian. Kelly point do we hold notre dame to an unfair standard on the other side of that. I don't think it's unfair. Standard people just want to see the four best teams in the country and they wanna see good gains when it gets into college football playoff and if they're not good games than the question always arises. Did you deserve to be there now. I do believe that. Notre dame's four best teams in the country. And i believe they have been You know in recent years when when they get into the playoff and so i don't look at the end result and say well. They didn't deserve to be there absolutely earned their right to be their way. They've played this season. I think this is a better football team that we've seen in recent years unfortunately for notre dame going against a ridiculously good offense in alabama. So it's gonna be tough
