"Island area. Please call Donald Jerry at 5167817240. That's 51678172 for zero transition, Okay? I think we're back. Uh, e on the Yeah. This has been some day for technical difficulties. I have my own technical difficulties here in my studio. One of my computers. Uh, battery just went down. I had a plug it in. And is that is that your phone stuck into your mic into your headset? Yes. I have a phone in my headset. Didn't anybody ever see Apollo 13 remember when they had the duct tape and working on? I'm here moderating. Monitoring the emails. I'm listening to the pit crew in the studio. And I'm talking to all of you s O. This is what we call multi multi tasking. Welcome. But you know what? Mike, though I'm happy that you turned off your virtual background because you know with we're doing the Facebook live at auto lab radio, but S so everybody has their camera. You know, for the zoom thing, and Mike was testing it earlier, and he wanted to put the gold shield background behind him. And when he did it His eyes disappeared his mountain mama, You know what they say in a picture's worth 1000 words? Yeah. So if people go hold on Mike Keenan on, So if you're gonna go if you go to our Facebook auto lab radio, he might disappear into the gold shield. Ghostly Mike, don't leave. It's literally consuming him. No, don't leave. Don't lean back too far. Mike. You'll be sucked into the other. Reality. E think I'm gonna have bad dreams about that. Hey, Speaking of bad dreams, you know I have way he got one in the shop this week. It better dream. It was the Jeep from hell. Wow. What happened? It was a liberty. Okay, Well, what happened? Was this this nice gentleman? Very patient, man. Um, had Triple a tow this vehicle and that his cousin sold them at a very good price and had been sitting and I think in his backyard for about two years, But it was fine when he parked it. Of course it Wasit doesn't start now. But just, you know, can you get it running for me? So we brought it in. And the battery was like frozen and dead and you know, and the alternator was making a lot of noise who put an alternator and got a battery in it. It would have didn't seem to start just right. And it seemed like we had to move the shifter around a little bit. Jeff, you being this? The old he used to have. It had reverse yesterday story. Yeah, no way. Got it to start and every you know we sold the guy. You know, an alternator. A battery are going to get this thing started. And my guys okay, We're gonna test drive, but we test drive every vehicle. I did for you? Yeah. Pre test drive. So my guys backing out of the shop and he hits the brakes and the pedal goes to the floor Like zero breaks. It didn't go through the door. Don't go field oratory. He almost killed one of my my parts people, but she lived. Um and s O we go. Okay. And the caliper blew up in a line blue. And so we go. Okay. Now we gotta put calipers and breaks and all that stuff, So we get all this stuff in the other guy's going Well, it's going to spend a little bit of money. We haven't even gotten the car out of the shop. Yeah, and then One of my guests. Okay. Hey, I forgot to do a light check. So he's checking in these notices that when he puts the car in park the reverse lights go on. Until safety. So we're straight in our past the neutral, you know? Oh, it had to be the neutral safety way. Get the carp in the air. And we see this. This this wiring harness from the transmission and And it was like wrapped in all kinds of black tape, and we opened. It was like spaghetti. It was like teen wires and they're using speaker wire. Oh, my God. Oh, and, um, anyway. You must be the same electrician's that why it's some of the lights in my house with telephone wire. Well, let me tell you something, Some of the stuff that we see David isn't a crazy. The Jeep is still with us. And the man who owns this Jeep is the most patient guy in the world. But he says he says to me, but my cousin told me it was fine. And, you know, the whole thing of ran went parked OK in the in the classic car thing. I mean, you see that Almost I mean, daily. You see, ran one park. So my question Raymond Parke s. So here's so Here's my question about Randy. That was 50 years ago. Right? Here's Here's my question. I ran with part when parked. Why did you park it? Yeah, Yeah. Yeah, you know, so I love it when I see that. Well, question and people like, you know, I don't know is Yeah, I parked it because it was making a weird noise and I was scared to drive and and I didn't want to get into like, you know, Inter from familiar debate. There were a problem, but I I told the guy I said I wonder why your cousin gave it to you for a song. Why did he stop driving it to begin with, huh? You don't have to tell you, David David. It's so funny that you're saying that because you know when people come into our shop. We like we interrogate them. You know, we interrogate them on how it happened when it happened. When does it happen? What is the problem? Exactly? We go for a ride with the clients. So it's a Oh, is that what you're feeling? Is that what you want about? It's so important. You know, if you toe all the listeners, if you go into a shop, and you say, Hey, I want my cartoons up, and then I just take the keys and writes it up and starts doing a tune up. You've got a question that process because the most important thing, especially when you have a quote unquote problem is that the person you bring it to is like a doctor. Ask the questions. Do the tests make sure the processes in place so that you can figure this thing out on the quickest and easiest way now, with what Carlos said. I mean, the reality is this is a can of worms. He doesn't have any information to give you. Oh, my gosh. You know, the thing is, if we're not like a duck that we are called doctors weigh every one of us here has a much training as any doctor has 100%. Well, I would. I would decline to do the brain surgery, though myself if they asked, E would say you keep the scalpel is guys and the end the end the saw, uh, just talking about interrogating I'm in. I'm in vision and waterboarding. What's troubling transmission? What is it? What? Yeah. Remember, remember Perry Mason, Isn't it true, Mr Jones? That underdone July 14 exactly what you're doing. It's Stonebridge there. Thank you. Sometimes you have to. Sometimes you have to interrogate the customer. We've all had that problem with, you have to drag the information out. I'm sorry, but you end up you end up. You know, getting information that they didn't even realize they needed to tell you. That's the difference. There is an art to the to the lot, you know, creating, like healthy lines of communication. I mean, communication is the whole thing. And so many times, people use terms that, um, that work for them. But don't clearly described with the symptom is and so You know, the classic one is I need a starter. What? And, you know, we think. Oh, yeah. He thinks he needs a starter, so it must be a no crank, right? But no, they they need to start a crystal.

That's uh, kind of limited thing to talk about. Matchmaking watching up, you know? Yes. And happily married. I'm sorry, Carol. Sorry count, but you know the thing about this, which is an enticing about this whole, uh, Nicole, The Facebook thing is like, yeah, you know, with we can start doing all these kind of interactive things and we can we'll be able to see each other and people will be able to You know it'll be live and you were talking about being actually be able be able to host like live events right where we could all meet on Facebook and discuss certain specific Um, usually automotive topics, not relationship. We're not the relationship show. We're not the dating show where the way we do relationships with cause with cars with cars, But it's talking to Eric right now. We're talking to Eric right now on Facebook about his 2015 2015. So you're the highland? What's he got going on? What's you know what's happening with that? He's asking about servicing and maintenance. And which what? What? We think he should do. Got any opinions, guys. General maintenance? Well, yes. General maintenance. What year is it? You should call any one of us, right? 2015 Highland. You know he's driving. One of them boiled one of the more reliable cars ever built. And really, you know, we always talk about it on the air is, you know you've got that owner's manual got the factory recommended. Maintenance schedule. Just stick to it. If you're in New York City, um You know you really want to stick to the severe maintenance schedule, but that you know you've gotta win there, man. That thing's amazing vehicle it. It's it'll last for a very long time. If you just Play the papers, they say in the music business. Just do do what it says in the manual. Yeah, except maybe for the transmission. It wasn't that whole thing Jeff about if you got 100,000 Mile car and the transmission shifting well, but the manufacturer's saying you need to change the fluid. You might. You might want to think about that. Yeah, It was definitely something that's not cut and dry. It's something that you need to look at what the current condition of the fluid is, and if it's clean, then you could do a service. If it's already started to burn, or you're having a condition I would recommend, you know, addressing that people make the make they make the mistake all the time on my transmission just started slipping and let me go get the fluid and filter changed. It sounds as being like, Yeah. That's the biggest mistake any. Yeah, that's the biggest mistake. Anybody can make. The other one I think is, you know if it were a full if it were a full wheel drive, I would make ah, whole bunch of different recommendations. In comparison to the two wheel. The two wheel is very. It's a non complicated front wheel drive vehicle, but when they make those vehicles four wheel drive, it becomes a very complicated system that has some specific issues that we Have information on you know Yeah. I mean, it is like Mike, you were saying? It's like you do wanna mean you follow the factory, uh, maintenance schedule, but at the same time you want to consult with somebody that you trust t maintain your vehicle because there are special conditions like let's say You're the person with the Highlander that's regularly towing a boat. There might be a different recommendation from from, you know the place that's normally maintaining your vehicle. So, um No. You follow the factory recommended Pair schedule but then also listened to people. You trust that? No. Um a little bit more than just the factory. The then the owners man. I agree with everything you said David, except I want to Okay. You said the biggest mistake anybody could make the biggest mistake any motors can make is not to the listen to this show. Okay, Okay. All right, all right. Not that we're you know. S o. If you listen to this show, then you'll know what mistakes not to make right. That's true. Speaking of mistakes, you know, go ahead. And I'm sorry I was going to say, since Eric is already on Facebook and auto lab radio. He knows how to reach us all or reach Jaffer. Whoever because everybody's information is pinned to the top of the page there. So thanks for doing that this week, and I noticed that I appreciate it has problems as he told all this friends to tune it. That's right. Well, everybody's got a like us on Facebook and tell your friends But speaking of mistakes there, Speaking of mistakes, I was talking with a customer this week on she was Quite distraught that she followed. You know, she, you know, read consumer reports and she, uh, she she went for the you know, the most reliable the best and everything and in its class. And she bought it. And it turns out that her family doesn't fit in the car. And she was quite she bought the vehicle and she said well, but it was the best car out there and Robert say, sit in the car front in the car, you know, she said, But she did She like just had this. She was so excited about buying one of the best cars in its class. That she just didn't do the math with with the two child seats..

"So, like all this inventory, and everything looks the same, so it could just be the latte guy pulling the wrong car by accident. So you really want to make sure that you look over that car when you first get there? You look at your purchase contract. We match that vin number. It's incumbent on you. I'm telling you, you you have to be your own advocate on this and it's not, And sometimes it is a mistake. But those mistakes are so hard once they go up to the office and that they fund these deals. They're really hard to undo. And forget about it when it gets the D M V. Oh, yeah, well, that's Z, my friend Joey. Really, Boy. What a nightmare. It was in D. M. V, and it was like, Yeah, the dealership just they threw up their hands and everybody's just going like, Well, I don't know what to say. You're driving around with the wrong registration. Yeah. My advice is really take your time. Sit with the documents do not be rushed, and, you know, just say like I'm one of those people. I'm gonna read those documents and so many people signed them. They don't understand even what they're signing. You know, you've got truth in lending in there. You've got regs e you've got. I mean, there's so many things in there and you've got a really just make sure you're reading them and asking the questions. So if people are going to read all the fine print they go. They got a plan on staying there overnight. Mm. And bring a legion of attorney with, um, bring breakfast. No. I mean, you have to just sit down and really make sure you're driving the car. I know it sounds so basic, but the ER dress If your dress is wrong, and you don't get that statement it, Xena Cole I had you know, I don't want a spirit whether I had a client who leased the car. They never mailed to the payment book. And she kept calling up and they never sent to the book, and they repossess the car because she didn't make the payments that happened. My client. That's what I'm talking about happened. My client. They thought their car was towed. Know it was. There was a picture because you know, everything's you know, I'm Cameron out off the car on the flatbed going to the pound like it was not good, but that's not even you could get your car out. You got to be careful of any paperwork that you sign it purchased the 2000 and two Chevy in Pala. Um Back in 2000 and one and at that time GM was offering Zero down and 0% financing for 16 months, So that's what I was going to do. But when I sat down to sign the paperwork They had put down a purse on interest. Interest rate it just wait a minute. This is supposed to be 0%. We'll change it later. Just sign the paper. Yeah, right. You think I'm that done anyway? The manager wasn't really happy and Even try to talk me into purchasing things for a fully loaded in power. They wanted to. Oh, you want kill a sentry? David what were saying? Well, I was going to say, you know, a good car buying experience can happen. And I've I mean, I know that it sounds like a commercial, but I've sent a lot of people to Nicole, and she kind of takes You know, when you have that kind of experience, you know, it takes a lot of the drama out of it and actually saves you all kinds of money. Because you know, if you if you don't have the time to deal with the minutia of something like this, um and I have customers just like like, I don't I got too much going on in my life. I just need somebody to take care of me through this process. So that I don't get, you know, hosed on dive sent So many people in the colon. They just go like Oh, my God. What? What a breath of fresh air is just like I got my car was like no drama. It was like every time I used to buy my cars, it was always like I turn around and go. What happened? What just happened to me? But Nicole, you just have done. You've taken that that drama out that negative drama. And so people have like these amazing positive car buying experiences where they just like, Wow, I got exactly what I wanted. I can afford it. It's just what it just was perfect and the car was delivered to my door. Oh, my gosh, you know, And it was a positive experience doesn't all have to be helpful. Yeah. I mean, you haven't advocate that's amazing. It's funny when I when I talkto you know, some of my buddies were like, Oh, I know how to buy a car. Let me do it for you. Whatever. And I'm like. They always talk about how they beat the dealer. Oh, yeah. Guy at his own game. Those are the guys that get ripped off more than anybody is the ones that are gonna go in. I know how to do this. You know, I'm gonna tell him. I'll walk out or I'll do this. All right. I speak their language, You know? Yeah, It's amazing. It's amazing that people will think They dam that they can get over. You know the best. I think the best you can hope for is a fair deal. And what you can do with that You have an advocate. You know, maybe you can get a little bit of an edge, but at least you're not gonna get ripped off, you know? There's a much too. There's too much inside baseball in the dealership for you to possibly know how to navigate that. Just 200% 100%. It's like it's like trying to beat the house in Vegas. Yeah, doesn't work that way..

While we hear Robert Erskine's report for the week, Robin What have you got for us today? Something some new car company. Yeah, a very small new car company. Um, This is really great news that that's coming up from Europe. We're talking about a company called Still Antis. Which means from Latin to Brighton with stars. So what are we talking about? This is the birth of the world's fourth largest automotive manufacturer. Had with 14 car brands. Still antisense set to become like Tesler. I think the new interrupter on the block of the automotive industry. Now I'm not talking about, you know, wacky, zany cars that are gonna come pouring out of factories all across Europe. I'm talking about a company, which has just announced its perfect marriage with fit Chrysler automobiles on this is the marriage between the P ece and citrine group that we've been following for quite some time. Now this group has relaunched itself as still antis on in a nutshell. What is this really all about? Well, key toe. What This organization is going to do, I think is very, very exciting. It's going to allow each of the 14 unique groups. To be themselves to draw upon their own people. Drawer upon their engineers, their designers. They're mechanics. They're technicians. They're organizer's. Each of the 14 groups, which we're going to hear about in the coming weeks are all going to be allowed to be given their own head and to develop their own identity, And this is a special exciting As we're talking about the real take up off electric vehicles, and all of that entails..

"With the battery tender on the motorcycle. You know, I find it just with all the craziness that's going on right now. Being able to get in a car and drive. I mean, you're safe. You're isolated. You know you're absolutely socially. Just unless you're tailgating somebody I got being able to just get in the car and take it Take a nice drive. I mean, I think it's one of its one of the last things that you could do that. That could be completely normal. And you don't even need to wear a mask inside your car. Although I do love looking at people on there, like what are you protecting against? How about the ones and how about the ones with the mask and the motorcycle helmet inside the car? That's that's special. That's special. That's a good one. That's a really good one. All right, Barry. Thanks a lot time for you and your retirement to get yourself a classic car and cruise around the country, don't you think? Had a beautiful 67 Camaro. I wish I still had. Well, give us a call. We'll find one for you. Okay. Okay. All right. Thanks for calling. And right now, let's talk to fill in Glen Cove. See what's on his mind, Phil. Good morning, everyone. Fascinating conversation Once again, uh, Collect wanted to ask the coal about what she thinks about employer programs. Tell you what it is. My wife works for a bank and the bank has a relationship with the manufacturer. And they offer if you are Looking to buy a car. They have a pre negotiated price on did I'm just wondering what the cold things if that Z Annoyed ideal thing or is there better deals to be had outside of that? So this room employed her called buying programs in the cold out today work? Well, what a lot of times. It's a great thing. You know what I mean? It's a great starting point. I would definitely explore it. I would see what they offer and then I would be very I would just be careful about the add ons and what happens after the price. So, you know, go in there and say What do you you know? What are you offering? What you're you know what is the financing? What of the leasing deals? It also depends. Who's offering it. What manufacturer? Do you know? Uh, sure. If I could say it's uh, Subaru. Okay, so Subaru, just so you know, I ran Subaru, my own Subaru store for years. Subaru is very interesting thing with smaller company So by nature, they're not as competitive This'd what I mean. So here. Here's a perfect example. We have the sixth employee pricing and I think it's I think it's gonna be. I think it's gonna be a good thing. But Subaru just so you know, really? Is what it is. They don't blow anything out. They don't give massive re but, you know, I mean, there's smaller company. I love it. I love the call. I mean, I like the cars, David. You know, David, I know you like it. I think it's good if you do, and here's the question. Do you want a Subaru? David and I were talking about Subaru's this week. We haven't seen them in many, many in many, many months. And then all of a sudden we had, like five of them in in one week. It's a very interesting conversation. All right, well. Yeah. Here's an interesting deal. But are you looking for a Subaru? Well, it's a fate accompli. Way worried. Done it. I just really wanted to get your feet back on. You know what you thought about those Yes. Are you happy with it? Why would you get yet? Forrester. Great. Good. How did you feel about the deal? I'm sure it was sure it went. Well, I mean, there is a very nice company. You know it is And it is And I gotta tell you, um This was a few years ago because we were actually refugees from the Volkswagen Diesel Gate. So how much? How much cash? Did you walk away with? Uh, that Volkswagen was the, uh, I bought that car is a birthday gift for my wife. And that was the best value. So it turns out that Uh, you know, the Volkswagen that I got was more of what I wanted to call for her, and when it all paired out, she was able to get the car that she wanted. Well, that's what it's very important. That fell. Yeah. The way it all worked out. But there was a whole uh you know, legacy about that whole diesel game. And I got some interesting. I'm sure it was fine because you know there's not that much markup in them. It's all about what happens after the initial pricing. So congratulations. It's a great car, and I'm hoping that you're enjoying it. Enjoy the con. If you have any problems, call us back at 8886927234. Email us at auto lab radio at Gmail dot com. Okay, fellow Good luck. Good luck. Good luck with the car. Thanks. Bye. Bye. Okay. All right, Jeff. You have a transmission tip for us this week, don't you? Do. I actually had an experience with shop this week Guy came in with a beautiful 2016 Chevy and Pala ltz gorgeous interior, Beautiful car. Had gotten stuck in the stone and did some serious damage to the transmission. We Talked about this a couple of weeks ago, but this because he wasn't listening to us three weeks ago, right? That's right. That's right. You know, I have tips in reference to what to do. If you're stuck in a snow. Tell the listeners how much of course not to listen to us. How much did it cost them Not to listen to us Dollar repair on a six speed automatic transmission, You know, very expensive sweetheart of a guy, But he kept asking questions, and I brought up the fact that the air doesn't go through the front grilles and you're not getting cool then that's exactly what happened to this car. It was completely burnt out. The fluids went up to almost 400 degrees. Um And I wanted to give the you know some specifics is toe as to what you should do if you are Find yourself in a situation where you stuck in the snow and try not to cause any damage. When you try to pull out with your vehicle and move forward, Make sure this front steering wheels straight if you cut the wheel left or right. You're just creating more resistance. You need to keep the wheel straight or slightly Viet off. Don't cut the wheel all the way to the left the right and spin the wheels. Keep the vehicle in a low gear and try not to spend. The wheel's second tip is don't go from reverse to drive while the wheel is spinning in the other direction. I've seen people do that. It's in the instantaneous explosion is what we would call it. If you're driving a real wheel drive car, and you're trying to pull out of a situation like that. Keep the front wheel straight. Slightly apply the emergency brake that will literally create both real wheels to spin in low gear and try to creep out of the spot that you're in. If you feel resistance, and you feel that the car can't get out of there, do some more digging. It's uh, it's a very basic and it's It's like making a plan like Nicole was saying about buying the car. We're talking about a plan to see how you're gonna get the car out of the spot that you're stuck in. And it's very easy to do damage. I'd be more than you know, This guy literally came out of pocket with $4000 this week to fix his car and It wasn't a pretty sight. I felt terrible for him. Andre gave him as much information as possible after the fact to help him not create that situation again. But Jeff how How long does The wheels need to spin like that, you know, spin up without the car moving fast before you're actually doing damage, and we're talking about seconds minutes. I mean, you know, within 20 or 30 seconds of the wheels spinning at 60 miles an hour in the vehicle, not moving at all. There's no air coming in through the air condition through the front grill, which is where the A C condenser gets cool. The transmission fluid gets cooled. The radiator gets cooled. You know all the fluids, you know, are all being cooled by that. You know, Russia air that grill and yeah, and if you don't have any air going through the grill, it's It's like putting a fire underneath. You know, you're part of of water. I mean, that's gonna happen very quickly. The number one killers heat. And you're just creating more and more heat. Yeah, even if you don't kill it, if you don't kill it immediately, you heat those seals up. Um, you know, you could have premature failure down the road, You know, you know, couple, it doesn't have to happen right away..

"Lifelong car enthusiast and call guy. In coffee in one hand and mention the other. Okay, Very good. And Robert Erskine Linked to the British Empire. If it is still an empire. Yeah. World renowned sculptor, designer and car guy, Rob it Good morning. A very warm welcome to you from a very cold and it's just started to get foggy here in England. What do you think it's for you? It's not going around London not exactly breaking news fog in London is there It was a raincoat named after them Breaking news way, Unfortunately, have our breaking news that our virus pandemic has gone out of control. Broken news. It's broken you so those of you in England who are listening to auto lab and I know that we have a following. Get your masks on social distance. So your hands stay indoors. Snuggle down and listen to auto lab. All right, Robert. What is the braking Auto news from Europe this week? Well, it's really, really cool and slightly, I would say worrying. I don't like to talk about worrying things. But you know, in great Britain, we are very famous. For a lot of delicious color in Italy delights that means food on we do make some very nice food, one of which is our famous fish and chips. Oh, I'll tell you just just the thought of fish and chips just makes me feel very hungry and they are the very best. They're probably the best of England's currently delights. But you can't have your fish without your chips. You're probably thinking. What the hell am I talking about? I am. I'm wondering. Yeah, well, you're gonna be you're gonna be knocked off your purchase this morning because there is a serious situation that is about Hit global production off vehicle manufacturing, and I would imagine a lot of other Manufacturing items that we love. That's our laptops are phones, tablets. Anything that has and you know what I'm going to say anything that has a microchip in it. Is being attacked at this moment. So what is it in a nutshell. Well, Mike, the situation is as follows. Production has slowed right down across the world in terms of almost everything because of the pandemic. One particular component that to really important in cars, and that is what we call a semiconductor. That's one thing and you could also really wrap it all up and call it a microchip. Where do microchips go in vehicles? Well, they are. They're in almost every controlling circuitry that you could think of. Think of your electronic control unit. Think of your adaptive braking system. Think of your climate control that you have in your vehicles where you consent, the heating and the air conditioning to do what it's supposed to do. All of these things are controlled. My micro chips. Microchips are very hard to spot if you drop them on the floor because they're so very, very small. Hence the name microchip, but they do a very important job of controlling all the Elektronik control units that we think off. Think of also your electronic stability program that you have in your vehicle. Think of a BS. The list goes on and on and on and what is happening is that China is literally soaking up most off the production of chips because a lot of these chips are made in China. And the reason for this simply is because China is one of the biggest continents on this planet that has an insatiable appetite for new vehicles, hence a lot of manufacturers of beating a path to China to set up shop and sell their wares. They are soaking up most of these microchips for their vehicle production, and it's causing a real issue in terms of production here. In mainland Europe companies such as B V W. Companies such as Bush, who is one of the world's largest porter's supplier, off components and parts are now stating their our supply chain bottlenecks. A certain components, which all contain the microchip on it's predicted that as we run into 2021, there is light at the end of the tunnel. There's going to be a slight flickering of the bulb. Due to a demand for these chips, which means a slowing up off manufacturing because parts are running dry and very quickly. Mike Yesterday evening I received a press release to say that Honda is actually About to cease production off one or two of its vehicles at this moment as we are on air because it can't get enough off the microchips. That's where we are Robert. Yesterday when we spoke about this, I did a little research. I found at least that doesn't press releases just talking about how Honda is being affected. And many other manufacturers are going to be slowing down production also, so Nicole, what's this going to do to use copper prices a new car prices? If you can't buy new cause what's going.

"I always discovered was after the cause. If we get services and whatnot, people would drive him for maybe 102 100 miles, and then they would just sit in the garage and become beauty queens. Or, for that matter, just become a mushroom growing plant on Benny Times, I would get cars and then later on 10 years later, believe enough on the same customers, and I often wonder why don't these people Try this car's on a more regular basis instead of only Every few years and whatnot. So what encouraged me? That census. You know what? Let me be an advocate to get these people to get this car's out so About eight years ago. So 2013 Had returned from North Carolina because I opened up the shop in North Carolina from New York. And then ultimately, I came back various reasons for that. And the first person that came out of the blue and he was an old time customer was Giuliano. You know, T So he came with his car, and he was so enthusiastic that I couldn't believe that he's still on the card. It's a 35 years or so. He was, I think the second owner of the car from two years of age and you service that coffee the entire 35 years. No, it just so happens that I did not do. The circumstances turned out that he would go visit my cousin out. Involvement the hell you also had an office shop. And I had separated from certain people because I was always moving around. I never stayed in the same spot more than 20 years. So after I came back It was just a coincidence that Juliana was in the neighborhood. And him and his wife were on his wife assess the value of houses for the insurance companies and before the banks And they drove by test to shop. And of course, that I saw this car I was outside. Stop and somebody jumps out of the car and he goes. Hey, you know, do you have a business card? I see all these office over here talking from your shop. I haven't seen this in such a long time. I have an Alfa so I'm looking at him and saying play. I know this guy That's been a while since I've seen him and sure enough, it was Giuliano. Did you know that you don't remember who I am? This is Oh, my God. It's still all right. And what some guys used to call me. Joe. Some comes from the old timers used to call me Joey believe in our cause. When I started, I was that young. They called me, Joey running up and down the cars. So that started a real strong relationship. Hey, has become almost every week to shop and, of course with his car, so I said to him, Jos Why don't we, uh, that was his nickname, Jules, by the way. Because you know what? Don't we just get together? This, uh, this Sunday and we'll just drive around Whitestone and Flushing and come back down the course I'll talk way back to the O. The story shop where I was And then we'll have breakfast. It will try toe. Get some more guys to join it. And sure enough, we cannot Within two weeks we had about 12 guys. And with that excuse, you know, we used to go visit another friend Jonas started. Hey, has his shop there Long Island City. And my job. First job was a little reluctant. He wasn't too much of a social guy like that, and having people in and out of his shop was not really His thing at the time, but he can't. He can't pitch. He can't but he can't pass up a bunch of Italians hanging out on Sunday morning, Right? Well, you see, that's what got him because we all came. In course, most of us spoke Sicilian. Which is his native language and where he is born. Because everything around around his parts was always speaking in Italian because of his cars and his his acquaintances in Italy and speed. You speak Italian. When you do these things you don't know speaking garlic. So, with my excuse, coming around and speaking director him. It really attracted him and we had a place to go and visit his shop. And this is the race cars. And that's how I actually we started on has grown up to about 22 guys. 25 guys, and I just have a small nice. I joined you back then, even though I didn't have an Alfa at a time. I used to have a fee yet, but I no longer had that. Um well, certainly the way we got more, Uh, close involve relationship was when you had that CIA, Dino. Yes, I got a pretty interesting call from all the other Fiats because it has that Ferrari engine and I should point out that we've been doing work for each other for about 30 40 years, right? Yeah, This is true. I would bring cars up to you at the time you only about a mile away from my shop. And I remember your dad starting the business and I was there, So we have a brain cars. We have a break coming up. So let's just tell everybody what we do on Sunday mornings and invite any other Italian car love is to join us. On Sunday morning, we usually meet up in massage, the shop on 48th Avenue and 35th Street and one on city. And from there, we did decide if we're going to take a ride, go through White stone and flushing. And then we always end up at this nice place called Bonnie Pinto in Middle Village. They make. Even though they're bakery, they actually make the best breakfast in Queens. Okay, we'll have to charge them for a commercial now. Yeah, I guess so. All right. Yeah, that's that's our goal is to drive the cars, get them out of the garages and then have breakfast. All right, So anybody who's interested in joining up with us anybody who loves Italian cause email US at auto lab radio at gmail dot.

I think we exchanged tweets and stuff like that. But you know I would really love for you to introduce yourself to the audience and share a little bit about your background and how you came into working in robotics and okay great. I well first since you mentioned twitter I should mention my twitter handle which is at Ken. Underscore Goldberg. And I've been trained very well. My daughter to post there at least one today so I've got the actually. I found it very interesting channel so so I am posting technical things as well as updates about things that are that are finding out which is the learning about which I find very useful. So my background is that I was. I went to University of Pennsylvania and then went to Carnegie Mellon for I was at USC for four years and then to Berkeley where I've been for now twenty five years for here. I RUN A lab. The we we call it the auto lab for Automation Science and Engineering and we have approximately thirty students doing research in there. And we're doing work. There's there's there's post graduate students and a good number of undergrads and we're also associated with other labs like the Berkeley Research Lab and the rise lab and citrus and other programs at Berkeley our particular labs interested in in in doing research on on robotics basically on algorithm ick approaches to robotics and specifically in last year's been focusing on learning methods for for imitation learning deep learning and reinforcement learning for control of robots in applications from grasping as you mentioned which is a primary want working on for for thirty five years to surgery surgical assistance Hugh assisting human surgeons for for robotics and home robots to especially for seniors and in who are who are who prefer to live at home and the last year is very new and we can talk about later is is agriculture and we have a new approach to poly culture farming that were exploring using deep learning so one thing that I thought was really interesting in looking at your bio is in spite of the fact that you are a highly accomplished robot assists you start your your body starts with Ken. Goldberg is an artist so art clearly must be very important to. You actually saw some sketches behind. You am curious. I'm curious about Ken as an artist. And you know how if all ties into your work. It's not the usual fare of this podcast but then I saw somewhere else. You are filmmaker as well Is that your art? Tell US okay. Well actually I wanted to be an artist when I was a kid and I I basically my mother said listen. You can be an artist after you become an engineer. So She she. She was very wise and I think it was. It was it was a good choice for me because actually love both art. Something that I take very seriously. I think it's often underrated by many people especially Engineers who think of it as as lightweight. It's actually just opposite trying to produce something that's meaningful in the art. World is extremely difficult and demanding. So I've spent a lot of time studying I have made a series of installations and projects. That almost always involve technology in some way. But they're also commenting on the role of technology in society. So probably best known pieces of project is a project called Tele Garden that my students and I set up in the very early very early years of the Internet. So it's nineteen ninety five that we we connected a industrial robot arm to the web interface at the time which was mosaic Browser and we built an interface. That would allow you from your screen from anywhere from your laptop There were no cellphones at the time. But you could. You could log in this thing I think. Yeah it was very fun project. We thought well. It's kind of curious. who would use it if anyone and we got thousands of people coming in and and moving the robot but the part of what was made. An artwork was the context because it was sitting inside a garden. A real physical gardens. We could plant in water seeds remotely and then we got tens of thousands and we estimate that over the time that product was was that robot was available online which is approximately nine years. It was visited over. Hundred thousand people participated in the in the project. That's awesome that's awesome again kind of the technology and are coming together rate. So that was the thing Sam because one of the ideas were said I. I don't think I would have pursued that if I just stuck with my research plans at the time but because this came out and offered a way to reach a at the time when I saw as potentially very broad audience I started putting effort into this then there was a fantastic team of students who worked on it. And then we are thrilled with the the idea that you could take a robot and you could put it into the hands essentially of potentially millions of people and then there were. There was a proof of concept the interface questions there it turned out that there were lots of interesting theoretical questions that came out of that so after that project we did a series of subsequent projects and then had an NSF grant to develop versions of this. We have a patent related to the south. Yeah it really grew into a whole new direction of research that that really started with our awesome awesome into tell us a little bit about your research interests nowadays more broadly. So we're still doing art and I can come back to that. There's a new contract. But the the the lab right now is been been very very focused on robot learning and especially as as I know your. Your listeners are very aware there's been huge revolution in the past decade. And so we've been. We're interested in this before the the advanced in deep learning started but now it really has become a huge focus for us so in particular. We have this been working robot grasping for many years and then went deep. Learning came out. We saw an opportunity to apply it. I can tell you that story if you if you like how we do it. Maybe start from the perspective of the grounding on the challenges associated with grasping like we see these pictures of whether they're rohbock robot hands or more industrial types of robots or prostheses. And you know a can grasp like we've seen we've all seen pictures of that but maybe it's harder than it looks or you know maybe the opportunities that have not figured out. Oh good okay so I can. I can answer that partly. I've realized only last few years that part of the reason I believe I went into this field was at myself as a kid was was incredibly clumsy. I still I still am. Anyone would throw me a ball I would drop it and so You know the last kid getting picked for any sports Games or anything like that and it was just Ed. I think that may unconsciously made me interested in in trying to figure this thing out like how. How do you grasp things and many years? Later when I was in Undergraduate I joined a laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania and they were studying various aspects of tactile sensing and I built a very simple hand with another student and we started really exploring this question. Of How do you grasp things? And it is fundamentally difficult for robots like to say that robots remain incredibly clumsy today. They're much better than they were but industrial arms. If you give them novel objects there will drop them with a fairly high frequency and this is a problem because we really want is want You WANNA be able to pick up anything that's put in front of you and the application the big application that's growing enormous right now is e commerce so you wanna be able to take objects every orders different so you wanna take things from bins and pack them. Lift them out of the band. Grasp and put them into boxes or bags for shipment and that turns out to be a bottleneck right now for robotics
