"Got maybe the best release dragon release in the world over auston Matthews, you know, look at all this crazy stuff he's doing, but what they see is a 17 year old kid who's 5 foot ten and isn't a crazy elite skater and they're like, I bet you some defensemen are like, I'm gonna show this kid what's up. Welcome to the NHL. And if you don't have support around him, if you have to play him 20 minutes a night is a rookie night in night out, getting beaten down like that. That's not going to be good for his development either. Yeah, I was going to say just having guys who can ensure that he actually gets to play with the puck sometimes and isn't just like, no, it'll be good for him to develop his game off the puck more certainly and be put in those spots. You're not necessarily going to regardless of what you do, step in and just be like, all right, it's going to be, it's going to be fun and puck possession time for the entire game. There's going to be bumps along the way, but just making sure that you at least have guys who can go retrieve, who can win battles who can get him into some of those spots to succeed. I'm excited to watch him at this level, certainly. I think the shot is going to draw a lot of the attention I put out like a mixtape of some of my favorite goals he scored last year and the first like 20 of them are pretty much carbon copies of each other. I our colleague Mitch Brown put up a really interesting piece on EPA side right before the lottery sort of talking and highlighting about Bernard's progression this season. And I think that's kind of been a slightly under talked about part of this story for all the goals he's put up in

"Throwing it in deep and then line changing and then Tampa's just been able to tilt the ice and when I look at it, one thing the leafs have kind of slowly lost a little bit over the years is speed. I feel and when a team's playing you that tight you almost need to create races back to the old Pittsburgh days, so to speak of when they're back to back cups, what's it pit do a lot of teams jam them so that they created 50 50 races. They flip pucks and they won races and you know we're looking at guys like Connor sherri and Brian rust and so on and so forth, Carl haglin, Phil could still skate at that time, right? And you kind of almost look at it and say, okay, well either the leafs need to create races or they need to be way more strategic about how they're putting the puck into the lightning zone because Tampa at a high percentage has been able to kind of just go back there and get the puck right back out of their zone without the leafs being able to kind of and the man or create a turnover and the few times they've been able to do it. We've seen goals, right? The fourth line scored a goal or just puck in deep two men on at turnover and right away Zach Austin re scores auston Matthews at a really good four check on Darren radish leading to a goal. They've just not been able to consistently produce those opportunities. And I think part of that is just the way they're putting the puck in and not having speed off the puck when they do dump it in and nothing's in sync. It's more of just like survive and get off. So Tampa's done an excellent job of a neutral zone. They have to be thrilled with it. And conversely,

"Very unique window for them to take advantage of them while they still can. I want to say one thing really quickly about long retentions, okay? Because I can think of three of them in the last ten years since this rule came into being in 2013. Luongo two Florida Vancouver retained. I think that's still that deal still holds up considering the Vancouver got markstrom back in it. As probably the best rebuilding trade that the Canucks made. In dismantling the 2011 cup team, I know that's damning with faint praise, but nonetheless, I don't think there'd be a ton of regret about how that played out from Vancouver's perspective. The other would be Phil kessel to Pittsburgh from Toronto's perspective, Toronto, obviously, and was intentionally weakening their team there, resulted in them getting auston Matthews. I actually think other than the first year of that deal they've made the playoffs every season. I don't know if they've won a round or not, somewhat someone will have to let me know in the inbox, but I don't think there'd be a ton of regret about how that one played out, and then the last one coming back to Vancouver, of course, all over ekman Larsson from Arizona, to Vancouver. Do you think Bill Armstrong has lost a wink of sleep over retaining a billion for 6 years in that trade? Doubt it. Yeah. These long retention deals just don't seem to actually bite the teams that make them. You know, I'm not trying to downplay the impact, but I mean, in the deal, as you formulated it, like, well, I mean, what's the actual cap savings to a rebuilding team? Isn't it in the $38 million range? I mean, who cares? Cares about 1 million a year for four or 5 years, like when you're, I mean, I guess I can understand it from a team doing the third party thing, but they're getting free assets in the deal. Yeah, it's a Blackhawks. They don't care about they have a lot of money. They don't care about that. I think it's fine. Yeah. That's a need the money committed. They do. Yeah, I think the leaves are the closest to that anyone's come to regretting that kind of salary retention just 'cause they didn't expect to get competitive so quickly, but I think you're right, especially if you're a team that's like starting a rebuild, which obviously Chicago is. And presumably, I mean, San Jose is, I guess, who knows what they've been doing for several years now. I really don't think there's a lot to lose sleep over on that. Well, the one distinction I wanted to make as well here is like Tom you mentioned the power play and stuff and they're already like historically great in that regard.

Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent Gritty Gupta is with us this morning, creedy, what goes up apparently must come down led by big tech this morning. Led by big tech I mean, you'll hear a familiar name here Tesla is really your biggest mover to the downside to SLAs, your ticker down about 2% in the pre market, all seeing the most volume out of all the names in the S&P 500 right now. So right off the bat, kind of going with a not so great indicator for what you're coming ahead in the trading session you also have Apple, for example, we love that proxy for all of big tech, AAPL's your ticker, down 1.8%, but get this, Nathan. It's not just big tech that's weighing on the indexes. You want you're really seeing this very broad sell off and it's significant when you see the likes of Apple being your second highest volume mover in the pre market. Right next to accidental zero XY, the oil company down about, we'll just shy of 4%. That's your third biggest mover. So once again, both spectrums, even the cyclical kind of more economically sensitive stocks like oil companies, for example, or even cruise lines, carnival cruise lines is right up there down 2.7%. Also dropping in line with like I said, those big tech names, and of course, when we talk about those big tech games, we got to talk about the likes of the chip makers here, AMD's, your ticker down 1.7% Nvidia as well, NVDA down about 2.7%. And Nathan, I really highlight the chips makers because you have big tech that drops, but then you have chip makers that are a little bit more volatile than big tech and they tend to magnify the moves that you see in apple or Facebook now known as meta or Microsoft, for example. So if you see a downside move of X percent, then the chip makers tend to, like I said, magnified a little bit, just given the supply chain concerns and geopolitics that are there. So all in all, a little bit of a broad sell off even in the pre market. Yeah, with all those recession calls coming in, even more of them this morning. What's going on with crypto stocks, creating bitcoins down once again? Yeah, it really following that macro story and that's really where I think you have to look at the various different ways to be exposed to crypto so you start off with the miners here, riot blockchain, for example, are IoT down 1.6%. It's kind of in a move very similar to about that drop you're seeing in Bitcoin, which is down about 2%, about a 20,000 handle, which is significant there. You're also have to look at investors in Bitcoin as well that are extremely exposed to the cryptocurrency micro strategy, for example, taking it on the chin today. Down about 3.3%. And then while you're looking at it, also look at the exchanges, coinbase, for example, CO2 down 4.6% Nathan all in all, however you slice and dice it. You really are seeing that crypto exposure kind of become an Achilles heel for a lot of these companies. Yeah, certainly risk off as we wait a chairman Powell's testimony later today. Pretty Gupta Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent has always thanks for being with us and looking at stocks as a whole ahead of the open. It's a down day futures S&P futures are down 54 points

"It would be ridiculous. The problem with Arizona is that Arizona makes so much sense in terms of a team that you can also dump contracts on because they just need to hit the cap floor. And Clayton Keller is a great two C that could very well become a one seat down the road. He's a great young player. I don't think you have the assets to one acquire chicken and I don't think you have the S to acquire him and Keller, who's also locked down long-term on a contract. So Arizona would be an appealing trade target trade team just because one day desperately love to clear cap. I think intent on trying to sign auston Matthews and want to free up as much money as possible. Granted, if you then move chicken and Keller, I don't know why that makes him an appealing destination for them, but that's a team that would work in terms of if you need to move, you know, like John Moore's contract or even a guy like Mike Riley, who I think you might have to move if that's the situation. You have to free up other cap aside from Jake de brusque, then make sense. I just don't think they have the assets for it. That's one maybe down the road. They move Keller, which would not surprise me, but I think right now I'll go with bruins, I'm gonna say they give up, they're gonna leave this deadline without their first this year and next year, and it's in deals. Again, don't have the pieces, but I'll say they get goland, who I think is gonna be moved and lindholm. That's legit. That's legit. It's a big deadline. That would be like, again, I think they need it. You need it, and they're building. And I think that's not a bad deadline. To me, I see them going smaller. And I know people don't love this. I think it's going to be adding a depth defense with a Justin Braun or a Middleton or someone like that. I'll say Braun. I'll say Braun. And maybe even another defenseman. Maybe they go to depth defenses. I want to be a little different here. I'm going to say they go with bronn and Middleton because again, teams, teams get when teams have bad things happen, and they get very worried about those things happening again. And what happened in the islanders series, I think they can't really get a number one unless they went for chicken. So I think they're going to go with two depth defensemen, just stack both sides. Hope they put the right pieces out there. And up front feels like Conor Garland has been tossed around a lot. The other guy who was said was max domi. Elliott Friedman mentioned max domi in that. So maybe they go for him too. But I will say, I think they go for two depth defense. I think I can, that's my big prediction. I go for two depth defenseman. I don't see them doing big things this stuff deadline. I initially did, now is it's getting closer and closer and seems like Florida with more assets in New York and Minnesota and all these people get involved. It feels like it's going to be a smaller deadline, you know? But again, I don't think they should do that. I'm with you. I think they should do what you said. Not what I said. The original ones. That is what they should do. I just said that so if that in the .1% chance it happened, I can then just run this video and be like, this is what I said originally. It's like the people on Twitter who are verified. They toss out so many takes until one of them is right. And then you just flex on it. The Raiders are interested in Stefan Gilmore. Definitely one you look down the road because I think now that hurdles off the boards, unless a guy likes to sneak a pans out, which, or Harrison down the road, you're going to start identifying that next wave of talented centers that probably aren't going to be sticking with the team in the next two or three years because that's the only way I think here. Again, I don't know how exactly he fits into a top 6 role. So you have to look at a guy like Keller or these other guys on teams that are either rebuilding or in spots where you just know they're not going to be there in a year or two and start laying the groundwork there because you need some help down the middle. Yeah, they got to go big with that.

"Then this Don Cherry is like this old-school Canadian hockey commentator on CBC or was, he's recently misplaced from that role. He called them a bunch of jerks. He hated this like outward, fun. He like he hates hockey fun because he's a guy from a different time. When hockey hours one of those one of those baseball guys, we hate 100%. It's 100% what he is and he called him a bunch of jerks on like on you know live TV. So Carolina boxes hurricanes, themed hurricanes colored, bunch of jerks t-shirts completely event into it. It was awesome. So that's so Carolina kind of made their waves made their Mark, um, you know, prior to this. But this is kind of their real, for a, the real Ascent into being notable for their play in. Quite some time, they won the Stanley Cup and I believed For they they actually want it all and since then it's been kind of tough sledding for them. So I'm glad to see that. They're back in a good spot. They're making the postseason. I don't think they'll they'll they'll be postseason Mainstays for a while. I don't think they're necessarily going to win it all any time soon, but I think they're going to be around there, going to be a tough out there. Good team, there are fun team. I like them. And I'm wrong, because I have no reason not to. They're they're, they're good fun, team. So, Colorado will be back. The Avalanche have a young team, they have a bill through the draft if I remember correctly. Correct. Yep. Very much so and so they but the question is, as they, they're young guys age, they're going to have to be paid at some point. So I would imagine that the pressure is on Monday. You there? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yep. I'm here. So you capture is on. Well, I would say next year they have to win, right? Kind of, so I got their two best players. I think in Mikko rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon. Those are locked up. McKinnon expires, twenty-three, twenty-four and granted it expires twenty-five. Twenty-six thousand McKinnon specifically is on what I think is unequivocally the single best contract in the league and it's not close. He's making six point three million dollars which is a little bit. What does that have a little bit more than half of what guys, like auston Matthews and, do you ever making? Yeah, and he's like ninety-five 5% is good wildly. Underpaid wildly underpaid. And he's twenty-five years old. Wow, this contract. But he's going to get paid at some point. He will in twenty-three twenty-four. Yep. Think that's your I think that's your spot. They've got Brandon Saad who is a for for the hockey fans. It's crazy that he's only twenty years old because he's been on the league for a long time. He wants some cups in Chicago, he's on a pretty team from this year, but he expires after the season Gabriel landeskog, who's there? Captain other great player? He's only 28, he expires after this season on a pretty team-friendly deal as well. After that after those two guys suck. I actually don't hate their cap sheet. They're they're both our goaltenders Philipp grubauer who's played tremendously and Devan, dubnyk, who's a capable backup are both up for New Deals, but grew by his own life and change this year. So he's got room to get paid. I'm sure he will at 29 Bill tenders age late and the goal tenders. Don't really come into their Prime until their late 20s, whereas like, you know..

"Why why this game game seven? Why Toronto? Why that series instead of this other one? Yeah yeah. They're both pretty insane. I mean the north this year I think I touched on it. Last episode. It's kind of been crazy all year. People haven't been sure what's going to happen so I'd love to talk about that one after the series after but I think Toronto is really crazy just because the expectations were so high you know they won the North Division pretty handily. You know they had a lot of players. Look real good auston Matthews their star player, led the league in goals. He's going to win the Rocket Richard for scoring. The most goals in the NHL, and it just looked like it was their year. You know, they haven't won a Almost fifty years now or over 50 years, excuse me, almost sixty years now. So it's been a long time. Haven't won a series and more than fifteen years. So Toronto's been wage and it seemed like it was their time. They were up 3 to 1 and then they just fell apart so crazy stuff. So try to the Maple Leaves. All their fans. They're so happy. They're so excited. Have a 3 to 1 a.m. and then they blow it. I mean that reminds me of the NBA Finals when the I guess Cleveland beat the Golden State Warriors. LeBron beat Steph. Curry came back 321. It's a very similar situation where this fan-based waiting and hoping and it seemed that thinks they have it and it's stolen from them. I, that's amazing man. I mean, so why why do you think this happened? Why do they fall apart after a 3-1 lead in their Series in that? That's kind of the question right now. I mean, what went wrong? I think a big blame has to fall, you know, I hate, I hate to call out a player like this, but it has to fall on the the first, the first line like the top three guys suck. For for Toronto is auston, Matthews Mitch, Marner William nielander the three young guys.

"Be assholes. They're they have this insane Insight sense of entitlement because they have these Superstars these Superstars. Don't perform straight up. Mitch Marner, I think that stat from Sports. It was 383, guys. Have scored a goal in the playoffs since the last time Mitch Marner scored which was in April of 2019, it's been two years. You're paying these kids. What do you have in these cross? Like, it's there all kinds of talent but they can't put it together. They just can't on the scoring in the regular season. It's something like that. Dude, he was way up. He was way up there and off tomorrow's, you know, it's not because they didn't have John Tomatoes. There, there is something emotionally wrong with that. That group. I don't know if it's going to take an exorcism of that organization, but I mean, I've just never seen anything like this in sports, not that I would expect auston Matthews body language and wage. Permanent to be upbeat after the game, but he, he was totally wrong after that game didn't want to say anything. And it's I think the only thing I'm disappointed with about them getting knocked out is I was pretty convinced in my mind that if we did get a chance to play them, that we would be able to beat this team because Canada's just beat up on Canada, all year. And I don't necessarily think a s teams are as good as what we saw in the East, the East was loaded, East was loaded and now look at the Avalanche. Boost is not the Avalanche right now on believable, if God, no matter who Toronto, played next after the Canadians, I think they were going to get smoked as it turns out, they got smoked by Montreal had no business even being there in the first place. First place. Yep. Yep. That's it. That's a phrase team. Yeah, a fringe team. Just knocked your ass out of the playoffs heartbreaking. I mean so I posted a five second job. Video on Twitter today about the the maple leaf situation and it was a Matthews in Martin or postseason highlights and then it just says thanks for watching with no other video in between jobs and Maple Leafs fans are having a time with me on Twitter right now and I don't regret it at all in his video. So do such the guy that runs down a friggin Holloway with a grenade and throws it in a Roman books at the yellow way. I mean it turns around and goes straight a spade because those same Maple Leafs fans who are so self-righteous. Right. And think, you know, the way up here and we're down here would be, would have done the same damn thing. They would have done the same damn thing. Oh yeah. I mean so I posted Toronto actually started game one with a how are you feeling? Toronto, Maple Leafs fans and I replied with the gift of them all in the Square put in their heads down. That's how I was feeling in game one. I mean, I've been at Maple Leafs fans this whole series and I don't regret it one bit off. But I guess honestly, like my real take on this is how can you be that bad? Like I'm sorry, just how can you be that bad that you get beat by a fringe team? A 3-1 lead like this isn't about Boston anymore. This isn't about your your emotional issues that you clearly have. This is about the fact that you're paying three players off, almost half your salary cap and still doing nothing..

"So james i have to. I was a little caught off guard last week when nhl ruled out the playoffs schedule. I was like week. The games are starting this weekend. What's the thinking behind the nhl jumping into the playoffs. So quickly here well. They're trying to move as fast as they possibly can. Because they've got some deadlines on the other end. The nhl had a number of shutdowns with the pandemic due to covid absences for different teams and that of structure schedule a longer than they wanted it to. And there's time pressure because nbc is obviously the rights holder in the us. They've got the olympics this summer. They really wanna get the nhl playoffs astounding out of the way before the olympic start. So there's this window where they got to cram as many games as they can so they didn't waste any time getting started. Well one of the outcomes of this relatively quick playoff start is at the vancouver canucks who had a bad covert outbreak earlier. This year are still playing regular season games even though the playoffs have already started their in what appears to be a completely meaningless. Three-game series against the calgary flames. So are you or is anyone planning to watch those games. I don't think the ratings will be very good. No it's this never happened before in. Nhl history one hundred and three years of history for the league and they never had anything like this happened before they have tv rights agreements. That are a lot of money advertising agreements that are a lot of money and they didn't want to get new situation where they were shortchanging those media partners. And we're going to have to pay some money back because sure you know it's been a tough situation for the league revenue wise. They're down three and a half billion dollars from where they normally would be as as an entity as a league. They're trying to make sure that they can play out the season. And we've had headlines on our site that are you know things like oh connects are still playing for some reason or like you know here. Here's an article about the game. If you still care you know it's it's you know to be fair to the nhl in a normal season. There's a lot of teams that are eliminated with month or two months left in the season and they're playing a lot of meaningless game so it just doesn't quite look this meaningless at the place already started. They're still going

"He plays that way, but I'm glad you don't see him. You haven't seen him disappear even though maybe he's been shooting and it's not working out for him. And I mean, God, I mean no one goes over the crossbar, quite the way home. Well, you haven't passed an act as well as I wanted to touch on one thing I want to touch on was the shooting. You know. I think that the the hip may be hindering him a little bit said, one of my live stream. Yeah. Yeah. His hip just looks like his in the rotation of that one timer and so on. And and he shoots like a baseball hockey player and it's been well documented that that he he wants to, like, shoot a, my lack which is basically off of the freaking tow or of the month, the the chip. Yeah. So yeah. Same thing. Auston Matthews. Do they do that new, like, snapshot, where they curl it back, and they whip it at the net? Yes, yeah, yeah. So, I mean, hopefully, it's okay hip injuries a tough because I always use Wayne Simmonds as an example, but I know that Wayne Simmonds wasn't a one-time setup guy, dead. Like like pasternack's roll. The the thing with passing a package is more like that Ovechkin type like I'm in my office. This is where I'm shooting, good luck, stop it. But what we're seeing right now, I just think that it's going to take a little bit longer for past an active, or can heal. Because even though he might be playing at eighty, to ninety percent, which is allowable that he'll probably still not fully healed. Yeah. And so he I just looked it up real quick. He did so since the trade deadline and basically off the top six was formed, he had four goals and 12 assists and the seasons. So, sixteen points not terrible by any means, but none of them were power plate and none of his four goals were a power-play goal and that's in my eyes a little bit concerned because he's your goal scorer, especially on the power play and your threat. And I think dead If I'm looking at it, I'm looking at it quickly. He only had two power-play points since the trade deadline, and that's a little bit concerning. Obviously, the Bruins power-play hasn't been the best summer season and especially the first p p. Yeah, yeah..

"The top Bruins draft picks PawSox gotta be number one. I mean Bergeron's up there as well. Yeah Marshawn as well, but God, you know, sometimes those like U Marshalls a late-round pick some of those it's it's crap shoots. It really is obviously do their homework, but with those guys are expecting a lot out, but you know how to get a guy of pastas caliber where they did in the first round that might be enough to put him at number one in the past twenty years just on impact and everything else. That that he brings and you're seeing you're seeing the fruits of it. You're seeing just does he have 50 goals. Does he have 50 goals? I I'm skeptical of this if he was auston Matthews it was you know just going off is against bootleg defense is up in Toronto, maybe run out of high school. Yeah, probably not but I mean again, I want to see what happens when they suck saying some of these other teams. I want to see don't get a rematch against the devil's the ranges, you know, Buffalo like there's a whole bunch of teams that have some pretty you know, Shady defense Thursday and again for as much as you know, pasta seems like he's, you know storming out of the gate like still got some Rust to shake off while he's not he hasn't really been automatic from the the power play at which which shows you the expectation is, not right that you just expect him when he's winding up in the left Circle to get you know the puck through but I mean he could get Thirty like would it surprise you if he like challenging? 35 like I mean you gotta just look at seems like every year he's getting better and better I mean just the amount of shot volume he's taking the series yeah I mean it seems like I wrote a call on after you had that the Hatcher against the capitals where it's like what point do we stop putting like the the ceiling on his offensive Talent cuz every year so he's getting better and better he's God anger on the pockys you know finding the soft areas of the ice he can kind of shoot it from anywhere like never hear something new so it is starting to get it sent to get pointless to like a cap off you know as opposed once the guy becomes a perennial 50-goal guy you shouldn't put a ceiling on his talent anymore but just every year it seems like he's getting better and better it was a foul language against the capitals where the puck was going to want to play into the bench and he put his stick up and just kind of knocked it down it was sort of slick and that was in transition so again it's just it as you said there's no you should be a ceiling it just there's always something new with him and then again you just get as value the city and to the team it's incredible and I don't think it's it's not something that we're going to see on another Bruin wage Probably another fifteen years and I'm not diminishing Bergeron are Marshall. I'm just saying they kind of already. We've already had these discussions on these guys. But this this is a totally different thing and it's funny cuz line and post-rock. I remember between either career kind of get compared a little bit scoring right-wingers and you know people kind of that whole line a good of a goal-scorer areas, but I mean now it's like not even close its posture on fight. Oh, yeah off my invite and when you hadn't even strange offense to like wine, he's got a string together. He was great first, maybe two years in Winnipeg, but after that he set up set up becoming like more just like a power blade guy. So yeah, the Gap is gotten pretty big between those two..
