"Afternoon. From rather drizzly zurich the former senior british diplomat. Sir william patey has told this program that he fears a long civil war when foreign troops finally withdraw from afghanistan later this year. So william served as the uk's ambassador in sudan iraq and saudi arabia before his posting to kabul in twenty ten. Let's listen to what he had to say. Luke is if the taliban beginning to extend their influence over the country. i mean. it's been clear for some time that that strategy has been to negotiate a withdrawal of international troops leaving the afghan government. Afghan security forces fend for themselves and then tried force their rule over the whole country. So that's been a strategy of the doha agreement so it is quite concerning that since the precipitate withdrawal having a nose didn't september effectively already withdrawn the taliban beginning to extend their influence across the country. I think the taliban intent on establishing the rule of the whole of afghanistan they don't be able to do that is not the same situation when the russians withdrew and they've najibullah government was in place but it is gonna be very difficult for the afghan security forces. We're seeing a loss of morale and certainly in the remoter areas where the afghan troops are surrendering or fleeing rather than fighting the taliban. We are going to see. Increasing taliban influence. The question is whether the taliban prepared to negotiate with the government so far they haven't been willing to seriously negotiate with the government and whether they're intent on a military takeover. If that is the case i think we're women for a long civil war in in afghanistan which will be rather sad ten of events that was through william patey who was the. Uk's ambassador to kabul between ten and twenty twelve. Let's unpack this further with monocle. Security correspondent bennett's august. Here begnaud. just may. Maybe i just your reflections on what the ambassador Had to say. And really when you sort of i guess maybe also looking cross where this ends up right now. Unfortunately the ambassador isn't alone in his statement being a threat of looming civil war in afghanistan more of a civil war than it already is to be fair. So general austin miller the commander of the us forces who are just leaving afghanistan for goods probably Said the same. He's afraid that if various factions in afghanistan cannot unite in an anti-taliban coalition of sorts and that has military as well as political elements. Civil war is inevitable because already we see across the country in the south the former stronghold of the taliban traditional one as well as in the north that taliban overrunning district to district and city after city so it certainly looks very interesting that this very timing of western retreat of nato retreat led by the united states is now and is happening in a very hasty fashion there it made headlines that baghram airbase one of the largest military bases was left basically overnight and the afghan commander who is now in charge woke up to surprising surprise surprise that nato forces have left overnight so this does not bode well for the future of the afghan forces are such of the state and also of the situation across the country. Yet as if the hotel guests didn't even go to the front desk to check out or sort of alert housekeeping That they might want to go check on the rooms. It was incredible looking at those those images that this suddenly became a ghost town also as they said as well you. The power was even switched off when they left. Of course what you meant that. Looters could already come in. I mean right. There that starts to stabilize things. But if we rewind now almost you know decades at this point if we look at at the adventure of going into afghanistan. Could it have been managed. Any different i mean we can. We can go over the great game many many times. At of course going into many would have said well. This is never going to work at work out of no matter. What technology no matter what intelligence you have for centuries this has always been fraught with with similar problems. Certainly history appears to repeat itself in afghanistan. but it wouldn't say that everything is predetermined and there's no other way for afghanistan to be that would be to fall but if we look at close to twenty years ago after nine eleven attacks nato for the first time in its history and the only time since invoked article five which is mutual defense if one of the alliance members attacked and the alliance went in but it was first of all particularly when it comes to the other allies about showing solidarity with the us more so than about afghanistan itself and the goal was to defeat extremism and make sure that afghanistan can never be used as a base for terrorism as such and if we look at afghanistan today extremism levels are probably at their highest in decades and the taliban attacks strongest ever since their military feet at least Very very close after the invasion So in the long run if we look at these goals that were that were put forward back then about. Fostering democracy in afghanistan strengthening human rights women rights in particular Bring stability and economic development to a country and essentially this term of nation building building. A nation through such foreign intervention was probably a tricky goal in of itself and in research as well as in practice this goal is considered increasingly elusive particularly in a place like afghanistan. And what we see twenty years after. Is that what we should have known even early on that certainly groups like the taliban have more patients than a western invasion. It's their home. They in their own perception. They're defending their home right and religious rights and so on they will stay but the west will not have the patience to lose money manpower and certain loss of civilian lives over the course of decades. It's surprising that they've actually stayed for so long. Are we seeing really nation demobilization at this point. Of course you have the demobilization of course of of the the the forces who were there. But i was out of the region last week and was talking to someone from one of the the gulf governments and they were. They were discussing how they are bringing parts of industry. I mean it's hard to use the word industry with afghanistan but but let's say small manufacturers bringing them to potentially to that country to pursue their crafts because the taliban don't don't want these craftsman there So if we have that type of drain happening where does it go..

"Now here's what else matters today. The house of representatives voted today to create a select committee that will investigate the deadly january sixth attack on the capital leading up to the vote. It was expected that fewer than ten republicans would actually support the effort. Of course you immediately look to the ten republicans who voted to impeach donald trump and not even all ten of them are on board with this select committee that nancy pelosi is pushing forward with in the aftermath of the senate blocking the formation of a bipartisan commission. To investigate the insurrection in a dear colleague letter today ahead of the vote speaker pelosi wrote. It is clear that january six was not simply an attack on a building but an attack on our very democracy. It is with sadness in not having a bipartisan. Nine eleven type commission with allegiance to our oath to the constitution and with respect for the patriotism of house members that i request your vote for the select committee now speaker. Pelosi is going to have eight slots on the committee that she can appoint la veto power over the five people that house minority leader republican leader kevin mccarthy gets to pick in consultation with speaker. Pelosi speaker has not yet said who she would appoint as chair of the committee but homeland security chairman. Bennie thompson is certainly a possible candidate because his committee has already been investigating the january sixth attack and after a lot of speculation policy at the time we recorded this podcast still hadn't said if she's decided to appoint a republican to the select committee as part of her group of eight that she gets to a point today adam kissing a republican from illinois. One of the ten who voted to impeach trump and committed. Sort of non trump republican. These days if you will. He stated pretty clearly. He's going to vote for the formation of this committee even though it's not his preferred option and that if he was asked to serve on it by the speaker he would give that real consideration. Now the benefit for democrats politically is that. If a republican is appointed by pelosi. She will be able to always point to a bipartisan effort. And when the committee is to vote on things assuming that that republican would vote the democrats. She'll be able to point to a bipartisan decision. Even as the republicans are eager to this entire exercise as purely partisan and democrats effort to try and hammer away at republicans between now and the midterms over the january. Six insurrection and finally today as president biden gets ready to wind down america's involvement in the war in afghanistan the top. Us commander in the country. General austin miller said that civil war in the region is a real possibility and quote. That should be a concern for the world. Rather than rethinking his choice to withdraw troops president biden remains unchanged in his thinking that the time to end the war has come and that remaining there would actually put. Us troops at heightened risk yesterday aboard air force. One white house press secretary. Jen psaki told reporters that quote the decision. The president made to withdraw troops from. Afghanistan is consistent with his view over the last twenty years about war and while ending. This war is one of the very few things that actually unites some progressives and donald trump supporters. President biden is still short. A face questions about what happens. Next especially for the millions of afghans who thrived under its sponsorship of democracy and now face the very real prospect of living under a futile taliban. Those questions aside president biden in his posture could not be more clear. This is not a region of the world that the president wants to remain focused on even with the attendant risks that come with withdrawing the biden administration is much more keenly focused on china and russia and other geopolitical threats than they are in perpetuating.

So yesterday just before doing little yardwork, see the neighbor out there and call over and hey, how you doing? We start chatting, and he says, Hey, we started decorating out here, So I just You know, I don't know if he's apologizing. I don't know why, but anyway But these decorations look very nice and just a little trees on the front stoop with some lights on them and inside their front window. They've got a tree all decorated, illuminated, drove out this morning and saw that very festive. Great to see that just fantastic we started talking about, he said. Well, we got a couple other things we want to do, and So that kind of got me thinking so Maybe purchasing some more lights. Oh, yeah. Of not not doing in a competitive way. We have a fence a nice privacy fence that runs between us. And I thought, Wouldn't it be kind of cool? If we put lights? It ran across top of that fence all the way down. Just happy. Pretty. Yeah. So I thought they'd be kind of nice and Went yesterday and had to make a purchase of some other things that I want the hardware store and usually where I buy my lights, and they're almost out. People started decorating. Apparently, Obviously we saw the stuff in the stores two months ago. But apparently they bought all they could and they're not ordering more because they say they get stuck with it. So, yeah. You want to go get him? Yeah, I've been trying to think of how tow Make our front door a little more palatable looking, because well, we do have those No. Well, lights, which I which to make beautiful kind of those? No. Well, candles out is kind of a semi joke. Even though they're retro, And now our front door always looks like I don't know. It just looks a little tacky cause it's just like stuff all over the place with those No. Well, candles. And what if you have a pure besides well, Garland around the door? That's not why did but yeah, but it's the lights or Multi colored which is fine, but we'll switch about go with go with white this year. Well, I'm Yeah, but you know who I I'd like the color lights too. Here's what we did. A five year old, we compromised. I prefer colored lights on the Christmas tree, and we used to swap him every other year on the inside tree. So now that we have this nice porch out front, I put a tree outside and that's my tree. Okay, The colored lights outside and we do the white lights inside. That's sort of a trade off. But might I make a suggestion? Sure. Do you? Why don't you get like, really? You can get this. These wraps that you can put on the front door and then put a bow on the door. It looks like a big Christmas gay. Yes. You see that? It was like that I could. I could see yours with some nice, bright, shiny red paper, you know, with Well, we have a red door. So you've got to put the paper make it shining with a bow or whatever. Thanks, Bill. Just thanks. You're just feeding the just a thought. And you know, we had our main tree has red white green lights. And so I thought. Well, if I could just kind of transition those colors to the front door, you know, and those those colors that's more than just white light. So you get a little color in there, right. So anyhow, maybe we'll see but sometimes You know, my husband he liked puts stuff outside and I'm like, Wait a minute. I wasn't ready for that yet And then I'm like, Well, I guess it's his house too. Yeah. Come on B J light up the town. That's what we're supposed to do right. By the way, the.

I was with Army combat troops for about 45 years ago. And this was not a problem. Then I guess our young folks today are as a group in very poor shape. And our military needs troops in top shape. So this makes sense. The Taliban have once again agreed to suspend attacks in southern Afghanistan that have displaced thousands in recent weeks. But on ly after the Americans promised to hold all strikes and night raids in keeping with the peace agreement we signed with the insurgents in February. The United States has been conducting airstrikes in support of Afghan forces trying to repel weeklong Taliban assaults in southern Helmand province that threatened to derail efforts to end Afghanistan's 19 Year war. The Taliban pledge came after a meeting with US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad Odd and a general Austin Miller, commander of U. S troops in Afghanistan. The Taliban agreed to suspend their operations after we said we would end drone strikes on insurgent positions as well as night raids and air assaults. The negotiations, which have been taking place since the U. S, signed a deal with the insurgents on February 29th are seen as the country's best chance at achieving peace. The odds for peace are small, but these people deserve the opportunity to live in peace. Plan B is for us to stay there as the police force basically an endless war. I hope this plan works.
