"Operate Jacobin the NFL draft came off without a hitch last night and was a welcome relief in rounds two and three you'll be tonight but this week's event as certainly re energize the football fan commissioner Roger Goodell was a guest on CBS this morning is hoping the NFL can start on time but the draft continues tonight last night's first round didn't have any surprises up top but they came later in the evening the Packers at the biggest eye opening move trading up to take Utah state quarterback Jordan love Green Bay is coming off a conference championship game appearance but instead of adding a weapon for Aaron Rodgers of which there were several possible wants to add they didn't step decide to draft his successor GM Brian Goodwin said it came down to finding the top player on their board Rogers was drafted late in the first round fifteen years ago and sat behind Brett Farr for three years perhaps the Packers will follow that same plan with love certainly needing seasoning after a down year with the Aggies the Bengals let off the draft by taking Heisman Trophy winner Joe borrow as expected all the number one pick in tonight's second round as well some of the other winners from last night's first round include the Miami Dolphins went three picks in the opening round and still got to a talk by lower thought was the tank for two up but that seemingly went out the window when they won five of their last nine games but they still got their guy at number five the Alabama quarterback is downplayed concerns over his injury saying he's fully recovered from hip surgery they also drafted some protection selecting offense of tackle Austin Jackson out of U. "Five forty we've been talking get into GM. And. He said everything you want to hear. And that's fine. And my mother said actions speak louder than words. So we'll see what actions are in the next couple of months, the expect something to happen today. No. I'm just that come out about the three headed GM that's left behind and he said, he's gonna talk to sandy and all that and has to be taken care of and the Grammy probably win the Cy Young. So there's little things I think of pop up, but. Let's see what your are on the next couple of weeks months leading up to spring training. Let's go to Chuck in Richmond. Chuck you're on the fan. Hey, Tony how you doing? All right, man. How about that? My man. Yeah. I don't think bound bandwagon. Is that far off man Metzler? You know, they played over five hundred baseball in the second half of the season. You don't want some guy healthy McNamara going to cover off the ball Wheeler one of the best second half of any. You know, any starting pitcher in the league. And I I see reader for optimism with the Mets. I mean, of course, you know, we got a couple of holes, but you know, gonna have to that offense into the bullpen. I think the Mets and definitely a E next year. I mean, I would say obviously Machado Alonzo can get a packet started for maybe a real Muto. And then you know, you your bullpen arms. And then I think the Mets gonna be back on top. Far away. I I don't know about that far yet because I if everybody stays healthy, and I'm not even an forget about. I'm not even put him in the conversation. But if guys stay healthy, and they got a good chance if they like you said, but what he has to do in the next. Couple of months is he's got to plug a lot of holes. You got it. Yeah. Catch. I mean like you said is catcher and third though. I don't think we promise he's gonna be coming back centre Conforto in you know, you put somebody like I said Machado on thirty you get removed on. I think the Mets are team that can be really dangerous, especially with the way, you know, the ground Syndergaard and Wheeler look, you know, pitching wise some help in the bullpen. But I don't think we're that far away. And I think what you meant my comments is win. Now that you know, we got a team that came when now they can't learn on doing something, at least, I hope so forth change. I'll look backing up. Can you win can win the NFL these today with this group? No. I only played they played, you know, a little bit better in the second half. But no, it's not a championship team. They have to add some pieces. Rea- multo said today, he's not resigning is not going to sign a long term contract. Now, he's got a couple of years before the free agent. But. All star. That that might solve the problem. What what's it gonna take? Are you committed to Alonzo playing I? Was see a bargaining chip. Could they be a ninety one club? Yeah. If they make the right deals. This current club. Could you get the five hundred? Yeah, I guess. But you have you know, you've gotta gluttony outfield. You gotta Gladys first base. You don't have a third base. You don't have a catcher second short seemed to be fine. Austin Jackson, the new lagaras, you keep him. Will you go back to the and it'll be going to get hurt? Again. Let's go to Dimitrius in Hoboken Dimitrius. What's going on? Only how you doing. All right, man. What's up? Things I want to bring up with. I just want to tell about this whole GM. You know, it's it's you know, you could tell the message just, you know, trying to hybrid, you know. Against the players were not. So basically, you know, I feel like he kind of came in with his inside. You know, you, you know. The manager. And then you've got the other. Well, the other guys in the front office that have the experience with there's only so much you could do, but you know, the previous caller certain, you know, right now. Fan, but I'm also like to follow in baseball. But right now the analysis kinda like up for grabs. You got three teams or another rebuilding phases. You know, you've got the Marlins you got you see what's Washington though. They broke that down. Right. So this is pretty much like the the pretty much the perfect time to actually get ahead of the ball. Atlanta and Phillies up it'll come into. But you know, they don't have the starting rotation that too much have, you know, the to those workhorses that can, you know, carry game, you know, the team on their backs if they really are firing all cylinders, but you know, like, I said. Any GM hiring? You're gonna you're gonna hear fan or journalists or whatever you gonna they're gonna tell you exactly what you want. If he came up and said, you know what I think we can win championship in the in the fifth year. Nobody wants to hear that. Nobody wants to you know, you know, action. They wanna see. Feel now. So we're real quick on this whole situation with. You know, pretty much adding more fuel to the fire. What's going on with the organization? You know, I'm from Hoboken. I know exactly what the situation, and this is this goes to show the character that he has, you know, it's pretty much something that probably getting drafted. They probably missed on it. You know? On his commitment on certain things. But you know, earlier there were talking about that he got summoned today before at the same location pretty much trapped them today. Yeah. Were saying that there's usually a bottleneck to get out of Hoboken. We all going get too far away to come toward, you know, what's going toward MetLife. So basically when you up the hill and whatnot usually, and the reason why I'm telling you this because I got some I gotta take a couple of years back for being patient and trying to get up get the hell out of the traffic. And usually when you go up there, the Cobb is pretty much. It's it's something tale. Are you trying to trying to make the right to go up the ramp to get onto the? This is what it is. When you come up. All can you pass the we all can police municipality at the light? There's a fork you make a left, right. There's a little light there. You gotta make a right all about an extra one ramp onto four ninety five. Okay. So when you go walk that little hill, and we all get the small town. So you know, they gotta details. Like, it's every day. There's two cops. There's the fork there at the first light Nikola, right? When you make a right to go onto four ninety five. So what I'm thinking he tried to go around everybody. You know, and that goes to show you that you were running late. You were running late. And that's not that today. But yesterday that they didn't catch you. But they issue a summons and said it through the mail. Okay. And then they got you because they think you're gonna go there, and it goes to show you like what are you thinking? If you know, you gotta be at MetLife. I say ten in the morning. What why are you win for the last there? Russian a mess there. Anyway with all. And if you don't that's the only way you gotta get outta there. The why you it goes to show you questions. The character has a person's like listen, everybody out here. Like who doesn't think you're getting paid to play a sport take it serious? It's like if you're not committed to Cleveland only to get there early. What goes to show you? What goes to tell? You about him is are you taking your job serious beam behind somebody? Everybody was crying. Well, you like this, and like, you know, early Mike set it on the radio like fifteen years you ever heard of anything off the field other than you know, with the whole memorabilia and stuff like that on Eli part. But you know, it's like you dropped it on the US pick on him. And I gotta deal with this year. You know, the repercussions to what's going to happen. Anybody that disobeys a coach time Montgomery or along with the law because what happens it's either you're gonna get the boot release. Now, you gotta think about another planet. It's like, well, we gotta go regardless. We to Jeff another quarterback, and it has other the way, but just you know, it goes to show you like the giants actually do their homework thoroughly prior to the fourth round draft pick. You know, people make mistakes, they get a second chance. The problem is on the verge of getting your first chance. You think you'll be activated? When they come back from the break. I mean, ideally, I just finished out the your the quarterback to try and figure out something next year because he's not going anywhere. Makes you wonder if they ever could fix the offensive line. What would happen to this team? Let's go to Anthony a queens. Tony what's up? Hi, tony. What's up? Oh, how you doing? Doing well doing well. I Tony you got to agree with this. I mean, what might be today was pretty bad. I didn't hear business. You can't what's the guy going to say. No what a loser. Take twenty five years to get better. Little conflict. You gotta look when he said we will win now. Well, will they I don't know. We'll see what looks like a couple of months. But if he said, you know, I think this team really stinks and. See now, you say that it might be maybe a one hundred percent honest. People paying money for tickets and see the season. They wanna give me some reason to buy tickets, you tell me stinks. Wait a minute. I don't need to buy tickets. Then. I mean, it's bad enough. We haven't heard from for GM owner in years. Alienate everybody really, it's just ridiculous. It's crazy, and Tony anyway, listen, we're gonna know next. Couple of months the question is this. And I said is this kind of puppet was he gonna stand up and punch in say listen enough of that nonsense. This be gotta do to win, you know, the nine unless they're gonna start releasing cheap. Bruce and Frazier. The Mexican a bunch of square pegs. So if you don't see them biting the bullet and the leasing a Jay, Bruce or releasing fridge and getting creative women's brand purgatory with them. Space. That was the most ridiculous thing to play first. They said Dominic Smith. You gotta Kim the minor leagues. It just makes no sense. What they do. It never makes any sense. That doesn't square peg round hole since cream Jeffrey, Kevin Mitchell, and once they're wealth. It's always fights back with the with the wolves. Do a my way. This is a. Fearless is what I'm curious about. He says, we're partners partners. Can you overrule the owners that you know, we're gonna do it my way that's what we're gonna find out back with some more Mets in football after this. This week..

"P oak plus over a hundred at least two hundred plate appearances in at least thirty percent of their games at center and a strikeout rate between twenty and thirty percent because baiter strikeout rate is low concerning to me. And here the the cops, I got back a Deuba Harare's in that in that range as is Austin Jackson jock Petersen. Danny Santana junior lake in Brian Peterson, since two thousand seven. So that's like, that's a really fascinating Senate calms to me well, I think that that lists certainly speaks to what you wrote in your article recently when you were comparing one. So to Ronald the kunia and mentioned that baiter leads. Is all rookies in war, both fan graphs and baseball reference, but I don't think anybody would be taking the rest of his career over a Kuna as sotos or even like labor Torres is, I think. Defensive metrics in general, have been sort of a question Mark for a lot of analysts this year, especially at the extremes, like I wrote a lot about Manny. Machado is concerning shortstop metrics and he's been a lot better with the dodgers. So I think there's a number of question marks about the public facing defensive metrics and how accurately they portray defense, but also exactly what they're measuring. Are they measuring defensive ability? Are they measuring position at cetera? I think with Bater I'm a little less concerned about those just because across all public facing metrics, he performs well. He leads the all major leaguers in UCR, which is fan graphs, defensive stat. He's second in outs above average, which is stat cast defensive metric for outfielders. So I think at the very least we know he's one of the best outfielders in the league. We don't necessarily know why that is whether it's because of something the cardinals do with positioning or if he just reads. Ball really well or is very faster has good instincts or what I think that gives him at the very least a pretty high floor going forward. I think in addition to maybe there is turmoil in the clubhouse with Tommy fam- the emergence of baiter allowed fam- to be expendable at the deadline when Saint Louis traded him to Tampa Bay. But I think like you the strikeout rate concerns me little and I'm not sure how much the bat will help him in the future. But if he keeps defending like this, like what gives him a floor of Kevin cure Meyer? And that's one of the most underrated valuable players in the majors. I think the Kevin care mar defensive comments still really, really aggressive just based on how because cure Myers. So good. Somebody like hammer, Jackie Bradley, you know, like I, I need more than more than how many innings is. He played in centerfield three hundred innings centerfield the season to really believe in that. I think I'll concede that the glove is good. I don't know how much more beyond that, but. I would almost go to in the opposite direction like the the amount of things that he does well really encourages me like he, you know, he's not Joey Votto, but he walks a fair amount. He hits for some power. He's, you know, he'll still some bases, and the ability to play center field is is huge. The big thing. There are two things not just the strike outweigh because the strikeout rate is livable, but he can't really afford for it to get much worse than that, which is a possibility you know, as as he gets more exposed to leak. The other thing that that really worries me is his three eighty Babb and as a guy knows a fast guy. If he's going to have a higher Babbitt. But Austin Jackson is on that. That listed calms for a reason. Baiter hits a lot of balls on the ground to which will, which will use his babble little bit by awesome Jackson being on that list of comps. Remember his his five win rookie season when his Bab was close to four hundred was one of the fluky is batted ball seasons in major league history and baiter can live with striking out twenty nine percent of the time if he's hitting two eighty. But if he's only hitting two eighty because every ball comes off as bad as falling in apply regardless of whether whether or not he hits it all that hard. Like that's that screams regression to me..

"Now austin jackson will come up as a pinch hitter for watson chicken and the pitching coach why nevis out to the visit with kindly is jackson gets ready to back austin jackson there's never faced adam connolly before jackson who played last night and had a big rbi single that gave the giants the lead in the sixth inning of the game hitting two fifty four no homers thirteen batted in three twenty seven on base average you got a very fast runner at second base of base it to the outfield even with some good arms out there and you would figure that hanson should score now a fastball right down the middle for a called strike one one the cow jackson slightly open stance two on two out three two two giants the pitch swing and miss he threw the exactly the same specs that pitch to the same spot there and jackson swallow this one i didn't get it so it's only two now jackson two hits in twelve at bats as a pinch hitter now he takes high and just off the outside with a change up catcher holiday but the call was a ball in the strike zone said yes not a strike on the dirty it skips by holiday and the runners would advance the ball gets back behind him by twenty five or thirty feet hanson moves to third and side of all the second on a wild pitch so now a basic to the fuel could mean two more runs for the giants although pablo is not very fast the runner at second base to and to the counter jackson they've announced the paid attendance today at nine thousand seven hundred twenty six or do they announce it that way although i thought by rule baseball is supposed to announce the actual number of tickets sold but anyway they announced nine thousand seven hundred twenty six to do the count i did read something earlier this year the marlins they were gonna do it differently though just announced the actual number of people who attended now time has taken the catcher holiday out to the mound to talk to adam conley big spot here the modern still alive in this game three two two giants in the ninth inning but obey said sunday the giants would be much more comfortable.

"Here's austin jackson jackson has a hit and a walk in three trips positive night offensively hitting two fifty two's get the on base average up to three thirty one still not hitting for any real power but his texas native austin jackson back in his home state offensive numbers starting to look a little more normal for him run don't bounces a slider for ball one will not be easy tomorrow against ver landers got a one point zero five earned run average the only guy better in the american league in garrett cole who started tonight is the guy who's starting tomorrow here's a strike from rod dome had ninety eight to count there's one in one it's weird how the giants have been james play in probably the most pitcher friendly ballpark in the game here's a slider for a called strike average more than five runs a game at home this year and just over three runs a game on the road again tonight that's been a much better hitting team much better hitting team at home one to is high jackson to do thirty five thousand plus here tonight a lot of those folks have left balls strikes account and it is a little bit high three or two i'm thinking about round rendell and they're not often a lot of cricket bats john's romblon would you what he's just done here even ahead of the count full nibbles three to his hit follow back out of play that time he wasn't nibbling he just pumped one right down the middle had ninety seven which is a good strategy when the score is eleven to two rockies by the way of tied their game in la against the dodgers to to to giants fans might be torn on that one the rockies are in first place ahead of the giants in the standings but it's of course the dodgers here is strike three call through austin jackson and this game.

"Enormous and you you you're there you watch these games i realized philly had the pitchers who threw ninety five plus but what is it with the strike outs you know he's supposed to shorten up hit the ball somewhere what's going on well i don't think they're shortening up and then a few of them have admitted that evan longoria said he's not giving in with a to strike approach he wants to be able to hit a double or he wants to be able to make contact for the sake of doing damage they're not interested in making contact just to ground out measly those to the right side of the infield as opposed to striking out there up there to hack into get their swings in that can help move things along and i think when you see a few strikeout start to add up i it's become contagious because guys are pressing at the plate much like they were at the very beginning of the season and so they're willing to chase outside of the strike zone and it's just led to a very bad week and if the worst possible time when the pitcher's needed the lineup to step up neither has really been there for them but this is a veteran team you know this is austin jackson you know crawford you got belt you've got home leave for instance he's had a terrible trip you've got posey these are guys who should know they i mean that's my point with this offense these are guys who've been there before they didn't just come in yesterday and say gee throw fastballs in the big lakes and i can't help but wonder if it's you know how this group is adapting to the new school ideology where small ball is being minimized and you're being asked to take more uppercuts and lift the ball in the air and beat defenses and we saw a few times in philadelphia where the giants hit the ball hard and the phillies were just position perfectly defensively and last night brandon belt evan longoria both hit fly balls deep to left center field but that's where the pirate outfield is shaded and so the giants just haven't seemed to figure out how to make this new approach work and when you're not succeeding in that approach and you're not willing to go to small ball it's going to lead to.

"Gerrad just smoked it over the head of austin jackson so how about that two outs you get a little flair for a hit and then you get a double over the head of the center fielder and here's max more off six to pirates the vicks swinging line driving the babysitter right field it's got it his throw home it is online posey's coster slid across to try to take moran the pirates are going to obviously take a look at it the call out was made by chris segal and we'll see if the pirates are to want to take a look at it we don't know they're not telling us and they're going to look at it so now we're going to have to wait i guess the pirates feel like why not right the sixty billion you got nothing to lose touches throw was run online bustard got to it is reached towards the first base line rather than went back showing it on the board the angle that they're showing it that's going to be hard to tell whether plus tack reaction here because of the angle the next day go they're showing has got polanco the on or totally blocking out any shot the next day go there showing his from center field which you can't tell anything so hopefully those folks of new york will have a better view then we're getting here at the ballpark.

"Postgame show there's so many things you can talk about and they hit on a lot of them but the big hit by austin jackson tonight getting the bases clearing double and just crushed it down the left field line and and i thought the professor we'll have montemar morning at ten o'clock live at the public house tomorrow i thought the professor had a great game tonight as the third base coach i really did held up belt when he had to hold them up sent crawford when he had to send them held up posey the professor was all over it tonight making very good decisions and getting everyone in a screened in scoring position without any trouble tonight so i always said about the professor ron wo does you know i've said it when he's on the show he's like having a player on the field he he reads the plays like an infielder reads the place and that's the way he reacts so good game for him tonight longoria another nice game for him hit the ball hard when the giants needed another big hit but i think that game turned on johnny cueto and as i talk about the first game and fifteenth six and roberto gomez taken one for the team and getting optioned out derek law getting option out after this game today johnny cueto went out and boy that first inning give up a couple of hits a couple of runs and now all of a sudden it's to nothing and you're saying is this going to be one of those days where nothing goes right then he settles down and retires eighteen of the next twenty eighteen of the next twenty the only to guide on with walks and he controlled the game and there were big pitches that he had to make and i say it enough about cueto when he is on when he is pitching his game he's as good as anybody around and it may not be the power of max scherzer the great curveball of kershaw this and that but when he's on the mound ev every pitch has a meaning everything he does has a meaning and it was really nice to to see him working today and getting it into the sixth.

"Get the call for the opening day game against colorado and got the win in that one who's gonna be the opening day started back in two thousand fourteen when they opened up in australia but ended up having tommy john surgery before that happened now there goes jackson the pitches down the throat a second on a bounce it's off to the second day for march backed up in shallow shutter field but the shortstop ahmed and it's a steal for austin jackson that's his first stealing and he did that get a particularly good job either the corbin took a while to get rid of that pitch with a big leg kick and hurried throw bounced and was not catchable two and one the cow to andrew mccutchen catching facing corbin he's two for nine lifetime against him to singles buster posey on deck here's the pitch swing dribbled ever so slowly fouled up to three bayside two balls two strikes last year the giants did fairly well against the corbin he was all into with the five point zero six era against the giants last year in this ballpark in his career he's had one win and four losses with a four point six one earned run average yeah i feel is backed up former catching crabs the plate slightly open stance right handed hitter corbin ready here comes and a slider down in in three into that did not by much.

"The kind of stuff that just gets me katie and and makes me love this job over and over again we saw the austin jackson catch that was up over the bullpen wall at fenway park on tuesday night that he flips sideways and backwards over the wall and still hangs onto the ball and that was fantastic stick so baseball gives us many dramatic moment that tickle me pink and remind me why this job is so much fun and there was another one of those moments now i don't know if i put it in the austin jackson category just because jackson went up and over the wall and came down upside down in still managed to hang onto the ball but the end of the marlins game now this wasn't this wasn't a hits that would have changed the outcome of the game but it was still a game ending catch by a phenomenal athlete and giancarlo stanton a swing here and a high ball for stamping down the rightfield line ended a corner stamp and leaping but leaping two run home run away from bryant good would a big failed to big g makes so many people happy it was really impressive catch again the only thing that may be kept it out of the same category as austin jackson is that big g didn't go up at over the wall come now the other side but he accelerated he to cover a ton of terry a territory far more ground and then that what austin jackson did at fenway park and he races over into the rightfield quarter and and leaps great ups and catches this ball taking away a home run as you here there are the marlins radio network in this happened to be a game under so while it wouldn't have changed the outcome more than likely the marlins were up all the nash all seven nothing at the time it still was a pretty dramatic way to end the game so that was awesome he's not just a homerun hitter you know so those types of things i think they're secrets to happiness a little bit of happiness little little blitz on your radar that will make you smile is the sports fan it's after hours with amy lord's here on cbs sports radio and the cbs sports app things that don't make me happy things.
